The Farland Chronicles
The Ruins of Thaine
Its funny how in the blink of an eye, your whole life can change. How that simple blink can ruin the life of another, how it breaks the ties and bonds of friendship, and how it destroys the trusting heart. All this sorrow and pain...
Kyanna reflected this as she sat upon her makeshift bed of an old blanket wrapped around moldy straw. Her body ached and every muscle seemed to scream in agony, her wrists chaffed under the weight of her chains. The small cut on her forehead, just above her left eyebrow, had ceased to bleed and itched terribly. Her leg had to be broken, or at least close to it. Besides the pain she felt running the length of it, her foot was at such an angle that no normal human could imagine. Her life had hit an all time low.
Life. She laughed, straining. The word held no meaning for her anymore. There was nothing more than anything she wanted than to die. But she knew death would be hard to come by. Her captor, Lord Mavis, would be sure to give her the slow, painful death he felt she deserved, which she also knew she didn't. She knew what he wanted, but was completely blind as to why he did. She laughed…such a feeble thought…Why had she not seen? Why had she not known?
As best she could, she curled her small, aching form into a ball and closed her eyes, suddenly tired. The sun had long ago set in shades of blue and orange and a chill wind had begun to blow. Dead trees in the courtyard swayed and a wolf bayed to a rising half moon. Guards marched along the castle walls in pairs of two and two, their metal boots clinking like hoof beats…hoof beats, like her dream…
