Chapter 1: Second Chances
Noah Puckerman was sitting alone in the office of John Jones, the lawyer for Blaine Anderson. When a woman comes in holding a baby girl. Noah knew the baby was Liza Marie Anderson, the baby that Rachel St James was the surrogate mother for. Then he asked, "What happened to her mother? Why did I get her?"
She replied, "Hasn't anyone told you, son? Her family is all dead." Noah asked, "How?" Before his in-laws entered the room. In response, Mr. Fabray says, "Puck, Quinn was killed too." Then he looks at baby Liza Marie and says, "Quinn was planning to tell you about the baby when you got back."
Soon Noah was sobbing before he felt a tiny hand on his cheek. As he looked into Liza Marie's eyes, it was as if the world had stopped. It was as if they were the only two in the world. Which was something he hadn't felt since Beth was born.
Soon, Burt Hummel comes in while in a wheelchair and says, "Your buddy Z crashed Dave's wedding and killed everybody but me and Mercedes. I was shot in the back before he set off a bomb at the wedding. Liza Marie was staying with Shelby because Beth wanted to see her. Beth and Shelby will be here soon. They're meeting Jesse at the airport and have to tell him about what happened."
Then Noah asks Burt, while still looking at Liza Marie, "Did Quinn show you my gun closet before she died, Mr. H?" Burt chuckled a little before saying, "That's the only good thing I remember about that day, Puck." Before Noah can respond, Jesse walks in and says, "Puck, Beth was the reason you got Liza Marie. Rachel and Kurt both felt guilty about you not getting to raise her."
Noah never takes his eyes off Liza Marie as he says, "Mr. H, how would you like to move in with me. I bought your old house and was handed the keys today. It was Quinn's idea after she saw it was up for sale again. Everybody joked for years that I was turning into you. Now it looks like I am you." As Beth and Shelby walk in Liza Marie starts to cry and Noah caresses Liza Marie's cheek before he starts to sing My Little Girl.

Soon Beth was the one crying and Liza Marie was asleep. Then Noah says to Beth, "I never wanted to give you up, Beth. That was Quinn's idea, and when Shelby finally got you. Quinn wanted you back, and I thought you were better off with Shelby. I have regretted giving you up every day since, but I knew you would be happier without me. Kurt and Blaine were taken from Liza Marie. I will be the only dad she knows. You are not being replaced, and Liza Marie will still be your niece." Beth doesn't say a word and just walks out. But not before looking at Burt as she leaves.
Then Burt says, "I would be honored to live with you and can't wait til Liza Marie starts dating." This makes Shelby laugh, and she says, "Me neither, Burt. I heard a lot of stories about you from Kurt. I just hope I'm still a part of her life." Noah looks up and says, "You will be. I just hope you two don't start to date anytime soon." Burt and Shelby just laugh before Burt says, "Kurt would have loved to be Rachel's brother, but I don't know how Carole or Finn would feel about that." Then Burt lightly hits Shelby as Noah raises an eyebrow.
Soon, Noah was helping Burt in his truck after he put his wheelchair in the back and fastened Liza Marie's car seat in the center of the seat. As they head to his house, Burt says, "My stuff is already at your house, Puck. Sam helped me move in. He couldn't make it today because he went to see Mercedes. She was shot trying to save me. Sam felt guilty that he was late to the wedding and hasn't talked to anyone else since what happened." Noah didn't say a word, and Burt noticed they were headed to William McKinley High School, where Sam worked.
Sam was headed to his car when Noah started chasing him in his truck. When Burt says, "Puck, stop! Killing Sam is not going to bring Quinn or your son back!" Noah stops the truck and stares blankly ahead as he rolls down the window. Then Sam approaches the truck and says, "I'm sorry, Man, if it makes you feel any better, Mercedes won't see me either because I didn't save Kurt or Rachel." Noah doesn't respond and runs over Sam's feet as he leaves the school parking lot.
Then he heads to Lima Memorial and sees Mercedes' sister Chandra standing out front with Norah, Noah's mother, who was a nurse there. Norah got Burt's wheelchair out as soon as Noah put his truck in park, and Noah got Burt out. Then Chandra says, "Puck, thank God you are here. Maybe you can get through to Mercedes. She keeps saying something about your buddy Z lying to her and saying that what happened was her fault." Noah hugs Chandra but says nothing.
When Noah entered Mercedes' hospital room holding Liza Marie's car seat, he sat by her bedside and she says, "Z called me wanting to know when Dave's wedding was and if I was going. He told me he had a transgender daughter and wanted to make amends with Dave. If I knew what he was planning to do, I would never have told him. I'm really sorry, Puck."
Noah picks up Liza Marie and says in a normal tone, "Don't tell me you're fucking sorry, Mercedes. Tell her, she lost almost her entire family because of what Z did. Yea, I lost my son and Quinn, but she lost the chance to get to know Kurt or Blaine. Look, I understand you didn't know that that would happen, but you knew how Kurt felt growing up without a mom. I will be the only dad she will ever have, Mr. H and Shelby will be her only grandparents. I can't yell at Z because he is dead and I realize this was not your fault, Mercedes. But I can't forgive you right now, and I'm not sure if I want to." Then he puts Liza Marie back in her car seat and wheels Burt out of the room.
Noah didn't talk to Burt until after they got back into his truck and drove to the cemetery. Noah carried Burt to Elizabeth's gravestone and says, "I know she didn't die of cancer, Mr. H. Now, you tell me what really happen. Why did it take you so long to accept me as Kurt's friend? And don't give me that crap about accepting me when you married Carole. It's bullshit."
Burt looks at the gravestone and says, "Elizabeth was shot trying to help Norah leave Nick. Nick shot her with my rifle twice. Okay, Puck? I didn't get over her death until I was dating Carole, and you being Kurt's worse bully before Dave or Z didn't help. I mean, it just took me a while to see you weren't like Nick at all. I bet that was why Quinn was conflicted about giving up Beth. I'm sorry you lost another baby, Puck, and I know what you are going through." Noah falls to his knees, holding tight to Burt and Liza Marie's car seat as he starts to cry.
When Noah calmed down, he took Burt and Liza Marie back to his truck and went home. Then he takes them inside and asks, "Is your stuff in Kurt's old room or in one of the rooms upstairs, Burt?" Burt points to the basement door and says, "Quinn had a ramp put in while you were overseas, and Artie tested it out after bugging me about why I never did that for him. Quinn had it built in case you needed it and was planning to put a wheelchair lift on the other staircase. Ha, Kurt thought the house was going to look like the one in Psycho for some reason." Noah almost makes Burt crash into his bed as he laughs, following Burt down the ramp.
Then Noah says, "Every boy that wants to date Liza Marie will sure be scared of this house in twelve years. What did Carole say when she saw your old bedroom was now my gun closet?" Burt chuckles and says, "Her and Quinn started hitting me after I said Good thing I'm not with Norah right now." Noah just laughs more and says, "Good thing Kurt wasn't there to hear you say that, or he might have joined in on hitting you."
Soon Noah was taking Burt upstairs to a nursery where Liza Marie was sleeping. As Burt looked at the nursery, he says, "This was Kurt's old nursery. Where did you find all this? I thought I threw it out years ago."
Noah looks at Liza Marie and says, "It's not the same stuff, Burt. Quinn found it all online after she found a picture of you holding Kurt as a baby. Jesse's coming with clothes Rachel saved for Liza Marie's first birthday. He told me if he didn't have a meeting that same day. He might have been killed too. I asked him why he didn't get Liza Marie. He told me that everybody felt guilty that I never got to raise Beth. I asked what did he mean by everybody, but got no reply."
Burt clears his throat and says, "After you and Quinn got back together following your second break up. Everybody noticed you were much more different. Kurt was the first to notice it and decided to make you Liza Marie's godfather even though he already chose Jesse to be the godfather. I never told them that you were raped overseas or that Quinn married you because the Navy wanted her to. Sorry, I didn't tell you that until now, Quinn promised me she would tell you, Puck."
Noah doesn't respond and carries Burt back to his room before slamming the door shut. Soon, Burt hears Noah weeping for two hours before he says, "I am a better man goddamn it! I changed my whole life for Quinn! I will prove to everybody Kurt made the right decision! Z, you son of a bitch. You and Kurt just gave me a second chance to be the dad I always wanted to be for Beth. I am going to be the best daddy Liza Marie ever had." Then Burt chuckles, and whispers, "And the worst nightmare for any boy she likes."
