Chapter 20: Celebration & Honeymoon

Julia & David are the first ones to arrive at Finlaystone House and to David's big surprise, there is a bagpipe group awaiting them. They start to play as from the moment their car reaches the entrance portal.

"Julia, how did you…?"

"Well, David, I am the Prime Minister of the UK, I can have your favorite bagpipe group playing at our wedding"

"Thank you, love. This is a very nice & thoughtful surprise. I am very touched" he kisses her passionately.

The other invitees arrive and they start the aperitif. Julia & David are trying to talk to everybody, they stay together and hold hands all the time.

There are a lot of activities for the kids: bouncy castle, croquet, lawn bowling, a giant Tic-Tac-Toe, hopscotch, a giant Connect Four, Tin Can Ball Toss Game, a coloring station, a Lego corner and children costumes corner. All under the supervision of 2 animators looking after the kids and playing with them to allow their parents to enjoy the celebrations without having to worry about their little ones.

There is also a photo booth, several darts boards & a magician.

On top of an open bar with all types of soft drinks & alcohols, there is also a massive Candy Bar for both adults & kids.

Suddenly, Charlie & Ella are running towards David & Julia.

"Daddy, Julia, J. K. Rowling is there! Look, she gave us both a stuffed Hedwig!

Julia smiles and says: "I invited her, I have met her several times whilst I was Home Secretary and even if we are not sharing the same political views, we became friends. She lives in Edinburgh, a bit more than one hour drive away. This is my surprise to your dad and to you both". David is really touched to meet her in person and Ella & Charlie are ecstatic! David also receive a signed copy of his favorite book "the Deadly Hallows". She has written on the first page: "To David who has found the way & the key to Julia's heart. I wish you both all the happiness in the world. Love. J. K. Rowling".

After 2 hours of bagpipe, champagne, canapés, verrines & lots of laugh, they all sit down in the main room decorated in white, silver and light pink.

They start with the cold starter: the smoked salmon from Argyll Smokery Julia liked so much and which is made nearby.

Then they have the warm starter: shrimp raviolis with truffle sauce.

After all the plates are removed, Frances stands up and taps the edge of her wine glass to get attention from everybody in the room.

"Hello everyone. Normally, Julia's father should have done this speech but unfortunately, he can't. But I know for sure that he would have been very happy for our daughter to have found David. Julia, you look so beautiful today and most importantly you are so happy. You started beaming since the moment you woke up this morning. I have never seen you so happy actually, even on the day you were elected Prime Minister which was a long-time life goal. I am very proud of you, you are wonderful, you are really helping people and I can only approve your choice of husband"

Everybody laugh.

"David, welcome into the family! I have met you in very difficult circumstances but since the moment I met you, I understood that you loved my Julia with all you heart and that you truly wanted to make her happy, with no ulterior motive. Marriage for you both was only a question of "when" and never a question of "if". This is the symbol of the commitment you both have strongly for each other and the love you feel for each other. You have already faced a lot of obstacles together, overcame them and so now I only wish you the best part of a fulfilling life together, full of love & laugh. I want to thank all the guests for coming, especially Aunt Prudence who came especially from Australia & Cousin Geoffrey who came especially from South Africa. Finally, I wish everyone to enjoy their night. Let's have a toast to Julia & David"

Julia & David stand, hug Frances tightly and warmly thank her.

Then Julia sits down again and it's David's turn to speak: "Thank you very much Frances. I am happy to be part of a bigger family now. I also thank my parents for raising my sister & I with all their love, for instilling their values in us: honesty, trust, respect, kindness and hard work. My wife is more used to give speeches than I do"

Everybody laugh. David goes on: " but we thank you for coming today and share these exceptional moments with us. We also thank you for your gifts and your donations in favor of the victims of the St Matthews's bombing.

Julia, a year ago I would never have imagined to stand here today, as your husband, in front of our family and friends. The day I met you, I realized you were special and that there was much more to discover about you than the sexy Home Secretary everybody can see on TV. I am glad you let me discover the "real Julia" and all your facets. You are making me very happy and I am thrilled to be able to call you "my wife".

To finish, I would like to thank my best man Robb, Julia's bridesmaids Helen, Trish and of course Ella & Charlie. Let's toast in their honor now. Cheers!"

David sits down whilst everybody are clapping hands cheerfully and toast.

"Nice speech, my husband"

"Thank you, my wife. I can't get enough of calling you that"

It's Robb's turn to stand up for the best man's wedding speech.

"Thank you David for the toast and for having chosen me as your best man. It was an honor. I deeply congratulate you both and I am so happy to witness your love and commitment today.

Julia, I need you an apology" he pauses and Julia looks at him surprised

Robb continues

"When David told me he was dating you, my first reaction was to laugh and make fun of him. I didn't believe the then Home Secretary (and a Tory on top of that) could really be seriously in love with my childhood friend, ex-military who votes Labor"

Julia and David smile and look at each other lovingly, they know their differences can surprise people.

"Then I saw how happy you were making my dear friend, I listened to him speaking about you for hours at the pub, which amazed me as David has never been very talkative"

Everybody laugh.

"Then I met you and I saw the strong bond and love you two share. So Julia, I apologize for having judged you, without knowing you and I am very happy David found you and that you make each other so happy"

Robb grabs his glass of wine, raises it "Cheers to the happy couple"

Julia stands up now, she can't help it..

"Thank you Robb. Your apologies are accepted and honestly I can't blame you. I fully understand where you are coming from. I think my bridesmaids Helen & Trish could say something similar about David. I understand our differences can surprise people but we cherish and nurture them. They say opposites attract and we can't agree more. We are drawn like magnets.

Today, I miss my dad terribly but I know for certain that he would have approved my choice and that he would have loved David.

Anyway, my husband said I was off-speech duty today so I will stop here, but not before thanking everybody to share this perfect day with us. It means a lot to us. Cheers and let's eat the main course now"

They eat slow cooked lamb (David's favorite meat) with season's vegetables & Yorkshire Pudding (one of Julia's favorites).

After the main course, Julia and David's friends show a film they have prepared all together with the help of Frances, David's parents & sister and Vicky retracing their life since their birth and then with the help of their PPO's for the more recent pictures together.

Julia & David are very touched, it's a very nice surprise!

After the main course, there is a break and Julia & David go around the tables to chat with all their guests. Before they reach the last table, as they are walking holding hands, all smiles, Julia leans onto David and murmurs in his ears:

"David, can you, please come with me for a minute, we need to check the cake"

David rises his eyebrows but replies seriously: "Of course, Mrs Budd, I know the cake made by your aunt & cousin in their bakery in Cheltenham is very important for you"

When they have finished their tour, their wedding cake is served: a 4 layers cake with lavender frosting and white sugar icing on top with flowers of lavender and rose falling like a cascade on the cake.

They cut it together and they feed each other with the first portion they manage to cut together.

Tea & coffee are served with the cake and lots of small Belgian chocolates that Julia loves so much.

Julia and David are getting ready for their wedding opening dance and Julia notices there is a massive curtain on the side of the dancefloor which was not there when they visited the place the day before..

"David, what are you up to?"

"Nothing Love, nothing"

"Mmm" answers an unconvinced Julia

Everybody is gathering around them and the first notes of "Somebody" start but Julia realizes straight away that the sound is live.

Then they chat with Julia & David for a while, offer them a signed version of Violator LP as they know one of their wedding gift is a record player.

The DJ takes over and everybody hit the dancefloor, including Dave, Martin & Andrew, after they paused for several pictures with the newlywed couple and the guests.

For the evening snacks, there are several food trucks with hamburgers, fish & chips, hot dogs, pancakes & waffels. There is a massive chocolate fountain with a lot of fruits and marshmallows and an ice creams truck.

The party is a success and everybody are enjoying themselves a lot, dancing, laughing, eating and drinking.

Julia & David have drunk a lot but are not pissed when finally the last guests are leaving the party.

David propels himself close to her, so close that she can feel his warm breathing on her skin. They chose the picture for the newspapers and they finalize the Press Release with Downing Street PR team. As from the moment they are married, Julia changes her name to take her husband last name juxtaposed to hers and she becomes Julia Montague-Budd. She is proud of wearing David's name and she is happy to be called Mrs Budd in day-to-day life but she decided to juxtapose it to her maiden name for her political public name. They chose a picture of their first kiss as husband & wife in front of the beautiful Paisley Abbey with the sun shining and putting a very nice natural light on the picture.

The press release says: "Prime Minister Julia Montague married her partner David Budd this Saturday in a private civil and religious ceremony in Scotland. She has decided to juxtapose her husband's name to hers and will then be named Julia Montague-Budd as from now. The newlywed couple thank you for all your wishes and affection marks and for respecting their privacy in this very happy moment of their life"

On Monday 6th May, they return the signed schedule to the registration office before flying from Glasgow to Washington in the VIP RAF Voyager "Vespina" used by senior UK Government Ministers and Members of the Royal Family for their first 4 days State Visit abroad as a married couple. They will meet the US president, Donald Trump and the first lady, Melania Trump.

Julia has to discuss some trades and military operations with Donald Trump.

They christen the bed in the main bedroom of the plane, trying to be less vocal than usual as the stewards, their protection team and the members of Julia's team coming with them for the commercial & military meetings are in the bedrooms nearby.

They land at Andrews Air Force Base and are welcomed by a military band and guard of honor, along with a color guard carrying both national flags.

Julia exits the plan holding hands with David to meet President Trump & The First Lady at the bottom of the boarding stairs. Julia is wearing a blue pantsuit with an ivory white silk blouse with a bow in front. David is wearing a navy blue suit with a light blue shirt and a navy blue silk tie.

President Trump is wearing a dark blue suit, a white shirt and his usual red tie. The First Lady is wearing a red skirt suit.

President Trump is welcoming Julia first: "Welcome to the United States of America, Prime Minister Montague-Budd" they shake hands, then Julia introduces David: "this is my husband, Sergeant David Budd", President Trump and David shake hands and President Trump says: "you look older than on the pictures", David laughs shyly as the whole situation is frankly a bit intimidating for him. President Trump introduces Melania who shake hands warmly with Julia and then Melania pauses her eyes on David.. They shake hands and Melania says with an approving tone: "you are even better looking than on the pictures". David freezes on the spot and doesn't flinch. He quickly goes back beside Julia and holds her hand firmly, he hopes the message is clear for both Julia & Melania.

They go straight to the White House and in the car David wants to address the issue with Julia straight away but they are not alone - there is her special advisor, her PPO and her driver. So he texts her: "Sorry about MT's comment Love. I love YOU and I am not interested in anybody else"

Julia picks her phone when she hears the "ding" as she suspects it's from him, having seen him typing a text.

She smiles softly when she reads it and replies back straight away: "I know. I love you"

When they arrive at the White House, Julia presents President Trump with a golf putter from Bristol based UK brand "Scott Readman Concepts" engraved with his name, a putter cover with the British flag as well as a St Andrews links Tartan Jacquard weave towel and a St Andrews – The Old course classic cap. He seems very happy and thanks her warmly.

David presents the First Lady with a "Links of London" bracelet with stylized letters charms: D for her husband Donald, B for their son Barron and M for Melania with diamonds inserted. She seems very touched and she spontaneously kisses him on the cheek to thank him, lingering on his cheek a bit more than what would be appropriate. David feels very embarrassed and he knows Julia can be very jealous. Melania is a former model and is very beautiful. Not that David would be near tempted but he doesn't want to be on the receiving end of her wife's bad temper nor cause any diplomatic issue, knowing President Trump reputation.

President Trump presents Julia with a Tiffany & Co sterling silver frame with a picture of her & David's wedding inside. Julia is very moved and she shows it to David straight away: "Look Love, this is so lovely". David nods but he is surprised as Julia never called him "love" before.

The First Lady presents David with a Glock 42 (the smallest Glock possible with ultra-compact dimensions and easy-to-shoot characteristics) engraved with his name, from Glock Inc. manufactured in Georgia with the carrying case, 3 magazines and all needed to clean it. David really likes the gift as well, he thanks her warmly but doesn't kiss her, of course, to avoid Julia's ire to grow even more. It's not his fault if Melania finds him attractive after all.

Julia and her team are meeting President Trump & his team over the commercial trades straight after that, which leaves David & Melania to visit the Lincoln memorial, the Jefferson memorial and Arlington Cemetery where they lay a wreath in homage to fallen soldiers during the World Wars. They clearly have taken David's career in the Army into account when they have prepared the visit.

During the travel, Melania and David are discussing about his time in the army, about his kids, about Barron and about their respective spouse. Melania is particularly curious about how David met Julia. They get on very well but David is very careful to maintain a good distance between them all the time.

When David joins Julia later at their hotel: the Washington D.C. – the Wharf Intercontinental Hotel, Julia is having a bath before getting ready for the State Dinner at the White House later that evening.

It's a lot to take on for a Scotsman born in a small town, from a middle-class family, not able to pursue the career he wanted as a doctor, due to a lack of money, a Veteran wound by the war (physically & psychologically) and a father of 2 great & happy kids, on his way to become a Detective Inspector, madly in love & married with one of the most powerful women in the World.

They arrive at the White House hands in hands and looking very lovingly at each other. President Trump & The First Lady welcome them and they enter in the State Dining Room. Julia is wearing a dark blue A-Line off-the-shoulder floor-length velvet Evening Dress with a split at the front starting at mid-thigh. Melania is wearing a crimson red strapless floor-length crepe dress. President Trump & David both wears a classic black Tuxedo with a white shirt & black bow tie. Fortunately, David sits to Julia's right, beside the wife of the Vice-President and Melania sits to President Trump's left, far from David.

The dinner goes smoothly and then they start to dance.. and things get a lot more complicated for David as President Trump is dancing with Julia for the opening dance and David has to dance with Melania who literally sticks to him.. David makes several attempts at standing back and putting some distance between them but fails miserably and because he doesn't want to cause a scene or look uncomfortable on the pictures, he continues to flash bright white smiles. And then his eyes fall on Julia's.. and his smile almost drops immediately.. he tries to send her an apologetic look but he only sees thunder and anger in her eyes..

The song finally ends and David stands back from Melania straight away, gives her a light bow and almost runs to grab Julia in his arms and start to swirl with her on the dancefloor.

"Love, I promise I tried very hard to put as much distance as possible between her & me but she kept pulling harder and I did not want to cause a scene.

Silence.

"Love, please, don't be jealous, we got married this weekend, you are the love of my life and I will never cheat on you"

Silence.

David bursts out laughing and Julia follows him only 2 seconds later.

The next day, as President Trump and Julia walk through the White House, he takes her hand and patted it, an unexpected gesture that only lasted a few seconds. He basically holds her hand as they pass through the colonnades, taking everybody by surprise, starting with Julia who can't really get her hand back, so she is stuck. The first thing she says [afterwards] is' I have to call David just to let him know that I have held the hand of another man, before it appeared in the media ", abounds the counselor. David laughs nervously.

"The press is going to have another field day, love"

"Wait until they start with a pregnant Prime Minister in function"

"We will cross that bridge when we get there"

"I am not worried, David. We will get through all this together, as usual"

"How is the Garden Party organization going?"

"It's driving me to the wall, to be honest. I can't wait to be alone with you for 10 days on Necker Island"

The Garden party is definitely a success and the next day they are finally on their way to Necker Island for the real start of their Honeymoon.

They have requested the island to be really deserted, no staff present on site, except on their request to practice water sports or if they want to order special food, the fridges and freezers are packed with lots of fresh local food, Julia's favorite white wine, champagne and David's favorite beer (Wadworth 6X). David is going to cook and he actually plans to teach Julia some basics during their Honeymoon and they also have some homemade ready meals to reheat. Their protection team is patrolling around the island 24/7 but at reasonable distance and their PPOs are not visible from the beach. It's really only them on that beautiful island for 10 days.

On their first evening on the island, they have a nice pic-nic on the beach, they watch the sunset eating, sipping champagne and kissing in the arms of each other.

On their fourth day on the island, Julia is dozing in bed whilst David is taking a shower when suddenly, Julia ears some muffled steps outside on the patio.

"Sergeant, please, reinforce the patrols around the island and add some additional diving patrols as well"

They spend their days between swimming, snorkeling, playing in the water, collecting seashells, taking the boat to other deserted small island close by, swimming with dolphins and making passionate love again and again everywhere: in bed, in the shower, on the beach, in the swimming pools, in the jaccuzzi, in the white macramé hammock, in the private cabin on the yacht which is decorated with a massive mirror on the ceiling.
