Chapter 3: First Time

Melody made her way down the long hallways of True Cross Academy, running over her father's words in her mind.
"How am I supposed to get close to the Okumura brothers?" She thought to herself as she turned a corner, but she hit something hard.
Stumbling backwards she fell on her butt and groaned as the impact left the body part stinging.
"Watch where you're going next time would'ya?" She asked looking up to see who she'd run into.
Rin Okumura was likewise sitting on the ground from their collision a few feet away. "The same could be said to you," he replied hotly.
"Wait, you're Rin Okumura right?" She asked, realizing who it was.
"Yeah… you're Melody… uh…"
"Faust,"
"Right, like the headmaster,"
"Yeah, I'm his daughter," she stood up and brushed herself off.
"That's cool, but uh… what are you still doing here?" he asked her as he leapt to his feet.
"I had to speak with my father after class… wait… what are you still doing here?"
"Oh, Yukio and I were going to go get ice cream after he was finished for today, but he's running late so I came to see what was going on," Rin explained.
"Ok then… want some company?" She asked awkwardly.
Rin grinned "Sure, the more the merrier," He said as he led the way back to their classroom. As they arrived they found it to be empty, save for a note on the desk addressed to Rin.
Rin,
I'm sorry, but I'm gonna have to cancel getting ice cream today, something's come up and I need to be there to help address the situation. I'll make it up to you later, I promise.
Yukio
"Ah man… I wonder what's going on?"
Melody frowned as she read the note, she knew what it was… it had to be Kuro.
"Should I tell him?" She asked herself looking at Rin who was currently debating what to do now.
"I think I know what's going on," She said.
"Really?"
"Yeah, I heard my dad talking to someone about it when I walked into his office, something about a guardian at the south gate,"
"Well then let's go!" Rin exclaimed as he grabbed her wrist and led her out of the room and down the hall.
She followed, barely keeping up with his gait as he practically dragged her along. The pair arrived at the south gate to True Cross Academy, and immediately noticed the quarantine tape. A higher-level Exorcist was standing guard at the tape.
"Excuse me sir, what's going on here?" Melody asked, feigning ignorance.
"Nothing that concerns you kids, don't worry about. We've got things here," The exorcist replied.
Melody frowned but Rin wasn't so dissuaded.
"Is Yukio Okumura in there?" He asked.
"Yes, Okumura arrived some time ago… why?"
"I'm his brother, Exwire Rin Okumura. I need access,"
"Oh, uh…"
"I'm also going to need access, Melody Faust, Exwire," Melody added.
"The headmaster's daughter? Yes, please, go on in," He said as he lifted the tape to allow them in. The pair made their way toward the center of the action and immediately Rin spotted Yukio.
"Yukio!" he called out as they approached.
"Rin! What are you doing here?" He asked in surprise.
"Melody told me what was going on, there's some guardian going on a rampage?"
"Yes, Kuro," Yukio said sadly as he looked down the bridge that led to the south gate. A large, twin-tailed cat creature was fighting off a small squad of exorcists.
"No! He can't be dead!" A voice echoed in Rin's mind.
"What?"
"We don't know, the guards who normally work this gate said that he's been acting different lately, more remote and distant. He just suddenly went berserk when one of the guards mentioned dad's death. We think he's been in denial up until now, well, that he still is in denial," Yukio explained.
"Kuro was related to dad?"
"Yes, Kuro was dad's familiar," Yukio turned to Rin.
"So… what's gonna happen to him?" Melody asked.
"Well, if things continue on like this… we'll need to put him down," Yukio replied morbidly.
"What? You can't! He's one of dad's friends, we can't kill him!" Rin immediately shouted his response.
"We don't have a choice, it doesn't matter who's familiar he was, he's a rogue demon who's fighting against the organization and the academy Rin,"
Rin backed down with a grunt of restraint, clenching his fists tightly. "So then, how are you going to do it?"
"Well, we've tried tranquilizer darts, but they seem to be having no effect, at this rate we'll have to break out a secret weapon dad left behind,"
"What secret weapon?"
"This," Yukio reached down to the ground by his feet and pulled up a silver case.
"What's in it?"
Yukio unscrewed the lid and produced the contents: A grenade with the symbol for holy water on the front.
"You're gonna blow him up!?"
"That seems a little extreme doesn't it?" Melody asked.
"If this keeps going we won't have a choice," Yukio answered, "Now you two stand back, get behind the tape line so we know you're safe,"
"Screw that," Rin shouted. "If Kuro really was dad's familiar, we need to do everything in our power to make sure he's ok and that he stops rampaging,"
"Don't you think we've tried that?" Yukio snapped back.
"Obviously you haven't tried hard enough," Rin said before taking off toward Kuro.
"Rin!"
Melody followed right behind him, she drew her gun and pulled out the clip, she spotted an abandoned clip of tranquilizer darts and swept her hand down to pick it up and load it. As she clicked the clip back into place she looked at Rin.
"I'm gonna try and distract him using the tranq darts, you do what you need to do,"
"Thanks," Rin said as he nodded.
Melody turned her attention toward Kuro and as they closed the distance she leapt onto the front end of a truck and leapt high into the air, clasping the pistol with both hands she took aim and fired a trio of darts into Kuro's back. She landed with a roll and as she came out of it she saw Kuro's paw headed right toward her. She closed her eyes and braced herself for the hit, but it never came. Opening her eyes she saw Rin was struggling against the massive beast.
"Get moving, I'll hold him off," Rin shouted at her.
She nodded and stood before leaping back.
"This is gonna be harder than I thought," Melody said to herself as Kuro's paw knocked Rin aside.
