Why Can't It Ever Be a Normal Year (Part 2): Chapter 26
Harsh summer turned into gentle autumn, as trees began to change their leaves and drop them off into the fields all around England. It always reminded Harry of the start of a new school year, that soon he'd be free from having to be locked up in Privet drive and he'd be able to escape for 6 hours a day. Of course, he hadn't lived in that closet under the stairs at Privet drive for just over 2 years now, instead the changing of seasons now signalled another year at Hogwarts. But before September 1st dawned on them all, Harry had a rather important mission to Diagon Alley to perform. After the incident in the Chamber of Secrets, Professor Dumbledore had recommended that Harry go back to Ollivanders and have his wand examined, as the circumstances of the shade of Tom Riddle dropping Harry's wand was too strange to conclude without an expert's opinion. Harry also had an ulterior motive for wanting to go to Ollivanders, namely to finally get Ginny the wand with the gift certificate he'd bought for her last Christmas. He had to remember that at the time of her outburst, she was being corrupted and controlled by the memory of Voldemort, so anything Ginny did during that time was not of her own doing.
Before Harry could simply waltz off to Diagon Alley though, he had to convince his Godfather to go with him. As much as he wanted to argue that he was old enough, he knew that Sirius wasn't likely to say yes. It even took some convincing to get Sirius to sign his permission slip to go on Hogsmeade weekends, as Sirius was concerned that Peter would use those weekends as opportunities to attack Harry. In the end, it took convincing from Alex that Harry would take the necessary precautions, for Sirius to finally sign the form. It didn't help that Rose was whispering in his ear how lonely she'd be at the castle and that Harry should be forced to stay behind to look after her. That earned her a glare from her brother, but Rose got off free by simply flashing her cherub like smile and puppydog eyes to Sirius.
So, on the morning of August 6th, Harry finally found himself heading to Diagon Alley with Sirius and Rose, meeting both Ron and Ginny at the Leaky Cauldron after taking the public floo grates. With Ginny's birthday less than a week away, Harry also had to try and sneakily buy a present for her, although Sirius had stated that he knew exactly what he should get her and that he'd take care of it for him. After a light breakfast, the group took the floo over to Diagon Alley, with Harry once more making a fool of himself by landing head first onto the pavements as he came flying out of the grate.
"Honestly Harry, you're going to give yourself a concussion one day." Rose shook her head as she helped dust her brother off.
"I don't mean to be so clumsy." Harry protested, "Floo's just don't agree with me. We don't get along."
"Clearly." Rose smirked, "Come on, Ron and Ginny are waiting for us."
The siblings quickly caught up to Sirius who had already made progress towards the Leaky Cauldron. "Come on you lot, we don't have all day!" Sirius called after them as they caught up.
"Sorry Uncle Siri, Harry just can't stick the landing, if you get my meaning." Rose tittered.
Sirius let out a laugh as he turned his head towards his Godson. "Don't worry pup, James couldn't land on his own two feet either. Always better on a broom than in the floo."
"Great, I suppose Mum didn't have any troubles?" Harry grumbled.
"Oh no, I remember plenty of times when your mother had trouble sticking the landing, especially when she first started using the floo. She got the hang of it though in the end. But she hated using brooms, so I suppose those two complimented their travelling styles equally."
"Sounds like someone else I know." Harry jostled his sister with his shoulder, earning himself a glare.
The trio made up for lost time by powerwalking through the busy side lanes of Diagon Alley, avoiding other shoppers and giving those that stared and whispered at Harry a wide berth. When they rounded the last corner, Harry spied two familiar shades of red standing by the entrance through to the Leaky Cauldron. Rose, ignoring her Godfathers shouts of concern, sprinted ahead to greet her best friend.
"Ginny!" Rose had made it a priority to show as much love and affection for Ginny as possible, in order to make up for the distant relationship they had through the last school year.
Harry took a much calmer course of action, staying by Sirius as they reached the Weasley siblings. He had to laugh when he saw the awkward look on Ron's face as Rose gave him a bone crushing hug as well.
"Gentle Rose, you're going to break his back if you're not careful." Harry teased.
Rose released Ron from her grip but not before shooting her brother a withering glare. "One of us has to show affection!"
"I show affection all the time you brat!" Harry countered.
"Alright you two, settle down, you're both equally affectionate." Sirius interrupted, "Now let's get going, we've got a lot to do today."
Ignoring his sisters' antics, Harry greeted his best mate with a slap on the back. "Let's see if we can sneak away to Quality Quidditch Supplies later." Harry grinned.
"Now that sounds like a rather devious plan, Potter." Ron grinned back.
Finally rounding the group up, Sirius shuffled them along the alley towards Ollivanders. Harry dragged his feet in order to sidle up next to Ginny, reaching out to take her hand. "Hey, did you get some sleep last night?"
Ginny smiled at Harrys concern but just shrugged. "A little. Sometimes the nightmares come and go through the night, so I can get a few hours of sleep."
Humming in understanding, Harry gave Ginny's hand another squeeze before letting go. "Almost time for your birthday, looking forward to it?"
Ginny gave a non-committal answer. "I guess. It'll be nice to see Charlie and Bill again. It's not the same in the house without them."
"Rose will have to agree with you there. She always complained that the house wasn't the same if I wasn't there." Harry said.
Ginny was quiet for a moment as she listened to Harry, before turning her head to face him. "Does she really forgive me for what I did?"
Looking a little taken back, Harry nodded firmly. "I don't think she ever really blamed you in the first place. You know you're like a sister to her. She cares about you a lot Gin."
"And…you don't blame me either?"
Smiling, Harry grabbed a hold of Ginny's hand once more. "Never. You're my Gin."
There was a genuine smile that crossed Ginny's face as she pulled herself closer to Harry, gripping onto his arm. "And you're my Harry."
The pair set themselves into a comfortable silence as they followed behind the other three. Ron at one
point looked back to see what his friend and sister were up to, giving them a funny look when he saw Ginny was once more attached to Harry's arm, but didn't bring it up. As they passed by the Quidditch store, more than one set of eyes were scanning the merchandise in the window, almost drooling over its contents. Finally, they reached Ollivanders, where Sirius pulled them aside to speak with them all privately.
"Now, we have no idea what he's going to say about Harry's wand, but let's just keep it a secret between us okay? And Ginny, your mother handed me this the other night. She wants you to use it."
Pulling out a slip of paper from his pocket and handing it to Ginny, the youngest Weasley examined it before going pale. It was the gift voucher that Harry had given her for Christmas. "Oh…"
"It'll be good for you to finally get your own wand, Ginny. As they say, each person needs their own wand." Sirius said.
Harry sensed the distress in Ginny, and sought to distract her from her thoughts by bumping her with his arm. "Come on, let's see if they have some pink wands. Maybe we'll replace Rose's with something frilly."
"Oi!"
The bickering between the Potter siblings was enough to distract Ginny, even making her laugh as she watched Rose stick her finger into her brother's face.
"Honestly you two. If I had a time machine, I would've broken Lily and James up, obviously their sass and temper were never meant to be combined." Sirius groaned.
"But then who would you dote on all the time hm?" Rose batted her eyelashes at him.
Rolling his eyes, Sirius just ruffled Rose's hair, even as she tried to bat him away. "Don't try the eye trick missy, I'm immune. Your father tried it all the time."
Rose huffed and pouted in annoyance. With the group settled, Sirius filed them into the wandmakers shop, where they were greeted with an empty front. "Mr Ollivander?" Sirius called out.
There was no reply for a few moments, until there was a crash somewhere deep within the store, followed by some terse swearing. Moments later, Ollivander himself came out looking rather frazzled but smiling nonetheless. "Ah, Mr Black! Come to bring your charges in?"
"Sort of. We've got a couple items of business first. Miss Weasley here has a wand voucher that she'd like to exchange for…well…a wand." Sirius explained.
"Is that so?" Ollivander smiled, "Come then Miss Weasley, let's get you measured up and then we can find you a proper wand."
Ginny was still rooted on the spot even as Ollivander beckoned her forward. It took a gentle nudge from Harry to get her moving towards the man. With precision and haste, Ollivander quickly measured up Ginny's height, wand arm length and wrist diameter before disappearing back into the shelves of the shop.
He returned several moments later with five wand boxes, setting them down on the front bench. "Alright Miss Weasley, let's start with this one. Maple, 7 inches, with a core of Dragonheart string."
Ginny took a hold of the wand and began to wave it around on Ollivanders insistence. A few of the boxes behind the front desk went flying out of their shelves and even a pot plant began to float before smashing down with a thump. Sirius quickly repaired it with his own wand to save Ginny from embarrassment.
"Nope, that will not do. Let's try this! Holly, 9 inches, with unicorn tail hair." Once again Ginny had very little success with the wand, causing several items around the store to fly around uncontrollably. It took another 3 goes until Ollivander finally found the perfect wand for Ginny. "Yew, 8'5" inches, with a core of Unicorn tail hair. It seems that once again, another Weasley has a Unicorn hair wand."
Sirius laughed at the comment. "You mean to tell me the Weasley's always get Unicorn hair?"
"Why yes. I've never met a single Weasley who hasn't had a Unicorn hair wand. Except for your mother, but then again, she is a Prewitt by birth."
"Okay, that is kinda spooky, you have to admit." Ron said, "Why Unicorn hair?"
Ollivander waved his hand around as he set about returning all the wands to their spots. "It symbolises a close bond between the user and the wand. Loyalty in a wand is not always so simple. For example, Dragon Heartstring can sometimes change allegiance. Even your own Phoenix feather core, Mr Potter, can change allegiance if it is hard earned. But Unicorn hair, it takes an immensely powerful force of determination to convert its allegiance to another owner."
Ginny and Ron looked at each other and smiled, knowing full well that the description of their cores described the Weasley personality to a tee.
"Now, is there anything else I can help you with?" Ollivander had an expectant look in his eyes as he peered down specifically at Harry.
With a nervous breath, Harry stepped forward with his wand and placed it on the counter. "My wand…there's something inside of it apart from my core, isn't there?"
Ollivander looked down at the eldest Potter, his face betraying not a single emotion. "What makes you think this?'
"There was an incident where my wand was grabbed by…by someone else. It burnt their hand, forcing them to drop it. Professor Dumbledore investigated and told me that such a thing has never happened before and that there was something in my wand that was causing the effect."
Picking the wand up, Ollivander studied it for a moment, although Harry swore that his attention was still fully on Harry. "There is indeed something in your wand Mr Potter. But I can only disclose that information with people that you trust."
"I trust everyone here with my life. They're my family." Harry stated simply.
Ginny and Ron blushed as Rose bumped them both. "Hear that, you're family now you two!"
Ignoring Rose, Ollivander nodded his head. "Inside your wand, is another piece of wood. Only a fragment of a larger piece but still, it is there."
"What kind of wood?" Sirius spoke up.
Ollivander considered his answer for a moment before continuing. "Almost 80 years ago, my father was brought a piece of white wood by your Great Grandfather, Henry Potter. He instructed me to put a sliver of it in 10 wands, and that these wands would all bond to future Potters. My father tried to tell him that the bonding of a wand cannot be determined so accurately, but he insisted. And so, my father made the first 5 wands, storing them away and forgetting about them. Several years later, your grandfather Fleamont came in for his wand with Henry. My father spent at least an hour with the young Potter, trying various wands until finally, he decided to bring out one of the wands that Henry had commissioned him to make. Immediately the first one bonded to Fleamont. It was truly a spectacle."
"So, what about the other five your father was supposed to make?" Sirius spoke up.
"I made them." Ollivander explained, "Your father was bonded with one that my father made, but yours I made myself. Your wand is special Mr Potter, not only because once again the white wood has chosen you as a Potter, but because your wands core has a brother core."
"I know, with Voldemort's wand." Harry said.
Ollivander shook his head. "Yes, but it is also the Phoenix itself that is special. I have a feeling that you have met him before."
"Wait…are you saying that Fawkes is the Phoenix that dropped the feathers?" Harry was truly surprised by this turn of events.
"He did indeed. Professor Dumbledore offered them to me one night, as Fawkes rarely dropped feathers. It was…an unknown curiosity that came over me when I created your wand Mr Potter. My father had just passed recently and I was filled with emotion, and so I created in anger a wand made of Holly and Phoenix feather, a hard wand to pair. In further spite, I inserted a sliver of the white tree in hopes that Henry Potter could be proven wrong. But it was I that was proven wrong, when you came and bonded with that powerful wand of yours."
Harry blushed as he reached out for his wand again, which Ollivander gave freely. "Just how powerful is my wand?"
"It is hard to say Mr Potter, but there is an old saying. Should Holly and Phoenix feather bond, best stay out of their path." Ollivander frowned for a moment, "Although I cannot say what the white wood adds to the wand. I do know that your father's wand was exceptionally powerful as well, very good at making long lasting transfigurations."
Nodding, Harry deposited his wand once more and made a move that signalled, he was ready to leave. Before they could though, Sirius interrupted once more. "Wait. Before we go, we need to know. Where did Henry get the white wood? What exactly is it?"
"I cannot tell you what it is, although it has a strong magical resonance within it. All that Henry told my father was that it was from a tree on the Potter property."
"But there's no white tree and Stag Run?" Rose spoke up.
Sirius nodded. "That's right. So where did it come from…"
"A mystery to us all. Now, if there's nothing more, I can do for you, I best get back to work." Ollivander gave them all a brief farewell before disappearing into the stacks of wands once more.
The group filed out of the wand makers shop, regrouping on the street and just staring at each other for a moment. "Mate, why does all the weird shit happen to you?" Ron said.
Harry just laughed but shrugged. "If I knew that I'd tell you."
"Alright you lot, I have something to do in Gringotts, so why don't you head over to Quality Quidditch Supplies and I'll meet you there later." Sirius said.
The boys readily agreed and quickly dragged their sisters away so they could browse the new line of brooms. Ginny was easy to convince since she was just as Quidditch mad as the rest of the Weasleys, but Rose made sure to dig her heels in and complain, begging to be allowed to visit Gladrags instead. But alas, Rose had to put up with three Quidditch loonies going mental over the newest and fastest brooms. Of particular note was the brand new Firebolt. It was developed by the son of Able Spudmore, Randolph, who was trying to resurrect his father and uncles broom manufacturing company. The company's previous brooms, the Tinderblast and Swiftstick, were commercial failure, despite their craftsmanship. What made the Firebolt special were its spectacular specifications, which the store hand was more than happy to spout on about.
"Yup, heard Randolph himself say dem Firebolts get up to 100 miles an hour! Can yeh believe that! Unbreakable braking charm as well, perfect for them chasers, eh?"
Harry smiled a little awkwardly as the store hand was starting to bug the group. Thankfully another customer came in, distracting the store hand. Harry, Ron and Ginny all read over the description while Rose was busy buffing her nails.
"Imagine riding that!" Ron whispered excitedly to Harry, "Malfoy wouldn't know what hit him!"
Harry rolled his eyes and shrugged. "I'm happy with my Nimbus. It hasn't failed me so far."
It was Ron's turn to roll his eyes. "But imagine it, Harry! You could go up and down the pitch several times before Malfoy even completes one!"
"I have to agree with my brother there Harry." Ginny interrupted, "I doubt anyone would be able to beat you if you had a Firebolt."
Harry blushed at the closeness he shared with Ginny, as she was pressed up against him to get a better look at the broom. "Honestly you lot, it's just a piece of wood that goes really fast! What's the big deal!" Rose whined.
"Just let us enjoy it Rose, you're not a keen flyer so you wouldn't understand." Harry responded.
Grumbling, Rose went off to another part of the store, leaving the others to drool over the broom. Eventually though they grew bored of just admiring it, especially since Harry wasn't going to even consider buying it while still have a perfectly good broom. So, instead they headed back outside, only to bump into Sirius. "What timing, done are you?" He asked.
"Yeah, no point staying in there, just makes us wish we could buy that new Firebolt." Harry said.
Sirius ruffled his Godson's hair as he chuckled. "When you're older you can do with your money as you like."
"But I don't want to buy it really, I love my Nimbus, it's a part of me."
"That's very mature of you Harry." Sirius smiled, "Come on, I'll treat you all to some Ice Cream at Fortescue's."
Absolutely nobody complained about that, following Sirius diligently to what was arguably the best food spot in all of Diagon Alley. Sirius treated them to whatever they fancied, resulting in Rose and Ginny sharing a massive Triple Decker Ice Cream Sunday, whilst Ron went for a slightly smaller yet still ludicrously large Fudge Brownie Sunday. Harry was more reserved, only getting a scoop and cone of treacle flavoured Ice Cream. Once everyone had stuffed themselves, Sirius rounded them back towards the public Floo grates, making sure Ron and Ginny got back home safely before escorting the Potter sibling's home.
Later that night, Sirius pulled Harry aside in private. Harry was curious as to what Sirius had planned. "What's going on Padfoot?"
"Well, you said you were struggling with what to get Ginny for her birthday, so I thought I'd give you a hand." Sirius smiled. Fishing around in his pocket, Sirius produced a small leather bag and handed it to Harry, "Open it up."
Doing as he was told, Harry opened the bag and pulled out what was inside. It was a piece of jewellery, with a teardrop on top that led to a cross. It was obviously made of gold but also had a deep red ruby set in the middle of the teardrop shape. "It's beautiful Sirius…but what is it?'
"It's called an Ankh, a very powerful symbol in magical circles. You've probably seen it before on the sarcophagi of Egyptian Mummies." Sirius explained, "It symbolises life and rebirth, but also signifies protection and are quite commonly charmed. This one has been in my family for some time. I do believe one of my great-great Uncles was an Egyptologist and was quite fascinated with the collection of these artifacts."
Harry soaked in the knowledge as he brushed his thumb over the ruby, causing it to slightly glow. "Woah…is this one charmed too?"
Sirius gave a small smile. "It is. This particular Ankh has a charmed placed on it that protects the wearers mind, specifically the will of self-control."
"Oh." Harry swallowed hard as he felt a tear come to his eye, "This is supposed to stop her getting possessed again…isn't it."
"Yes Harry." Sirius sighed, "I know how much she means to you, and I know that if your Mum and Dad were around, they'd be doing the exact same thing. We do all we can for those we care about."
Wiping his eyes clear of tears, Harry gave Sirius a determined nod. "I know. Will this…will this protect her completely?"
Sirius shook his head. "No, a strong caster of the Imperius curse has a chance to break through but it will certainly protect her from any other sort of dark possession items."
Harry nodded his understanding, before reaching out to hug Sirius. "Thank you. This means a lot to me, to be able to protect her."
"I know Harry, I see that look in your eye, the same look that James gave Lily." Pulling back, Sirius held Harry at arm's length, "What terrifies me though, is that it's the look he gave her when they were married and in love. The pair of you are too young for such thoughts."
Harry looked worried for a moment. "I don't know how to explain it Uncle Siri, but it just feels right. It feels like I've known her my entire life, or even before then."
"Before then? What do you mean?"
Swallowing Hard, Harry prepared himself with a few breaths. "It feels as though I know her from a past life."
Sirius' eyebrow rose up into his hairline. "Come again?"
"Sometimes I have to remind my brain that her name is Ginny, when my memory says that she's someone else…like Guinevere…or Isolde…or Juliet."
"Star-crossed lovers." Sirius whispered, "When did you start feeling this?"
"The first time I saw her, when Mrs Weasley, Ron and Gin came over just after Dumbledore rescued us."
Sirius looked concerned at the revelation, not sure what to make of it. "Well, I have no true idea what's going on, but perhaps another chat with Dumbledore would be required. Otherwise, I've never heard of what you're describing."
Harry nodded. "Um, Ginny feels the same thing as I do as well…just to let you know."
Sighing, Sirius shook his head and rubbed his temples. "James, Lily, Merlin, I wish you were here instead of me."
Giving an apologetic look, Harry ducked his head in embarrassment. "I'm sorry for being such a pain."
"You're not a pain Harry, you'll never be a pain. I'm your godfather and it's my responsibility to look after you and your sister. It's just a confusing situation that I have no idea about, and that scares me."
Harry nodded. "I know, I'm just as confused as you are."
Sirius snorted. "Let's just leave it for now, otherwise I feel like our heads are going to explode."
Laughing alongside his godfather, Harry agreed wholeheartedly. As they made a move to separate, Harry reached forward and wrapped his arms around Sirius. "Thank you, for everything Padfoot."
"Like I said Harry, it's my responsibility to look after you." Sirius ruffled his hair, "And I love both you and your sister as if you were my own."
"We love you too Sirius." Harry's voice warbled a little, "I love you too."
Hearing Harry say those words made a tear come to Sirius' eye as he tightened the hug around his godson. They stayed like that for several moments before they heard Rose calling for them, forcing them to separate. Just as they pulled apart, Rose vaulted up the stairs and found them in their hidey hole.
"What're you two up to?" She queried.
"None of your business Miss nosey." Sirius replied, "We were just having a bit of a manly chat, that's all."
Rose snorted. "Manly? Harry? Has he started growing hair on his face yet?"
Harry retaliated by flicking Rose's ear as he went past her. "Watch it brat."
"Yeah, yeah. Don't forget I know where you live."
"Surprising that." Harry laughed.
Rose hmphed but ignored her brothers retort, instead going over to her godfather. "You've been crying."
"Yeah, just having a tender moment with Harry, that's all my little Rose petal."
Rose smiled and wrapped her own arms around Sirius' sides, squeezing the life out of him. "See, sometimes he can show affection."
"I'm pretty sure you were the one you said otherwise." Sirius chuckled.
"Hush you, don't spoil this."
Sirius just rolled his eyes and ruffled Rose's hair, much like he previously did for Harry. As he stood there, wrapped in the arms of Rose Potter, Sirius thought to himself that all the troubles in the world would never compare to the feeling of love and satisfaction that he got from protecting the two youngest Potters.
OAPAAP OAPAAP OAPAAP OAPAAP OAPPAP
After the trip to Diagon Alley, the next major event for the Potters was Ginny's 12th birthday. Last year the young girl had been rather enthusiastic about her birthday, but with recent events dimming her personality, Ginny had taken a rather nonchalant approach to her birthday. She wasn't particularly looking forward to it, but then again, she wasn't against it either. To her, it felt like just another day, and probably another night where she would experience nightmares and wake up drenched in a cold sweat.
The morning of Ginny's birthday was an unusually warm day for Autumn, bringing plenty of sunshine with only a gentle breeze to cool the air, perfect conditions for flying. Ginny wasn't expecting much of a fanfare, after all, she'd become the black sheep of the family. She couldn't quite imagine how her classmates would treat her, the only saving grace being that she shared her classes with Rose and Luna, making it slightly more bearable. So, when Ginny came down to find all her brothers, even Charlie and Bill, she couldn't help but feel slightly relieved that maybe, just maybe, she wasn't a lost cause after all.
"Happy birthday Ginny!"
The early morning ruckus would've normally been too much for Ginny, but today she soaked it in and smiled brightly. "Thank you…" She said timidly, "Where's mum and dad?"
Bill surprised Ginny when he stepped forward and reached his arms around her middle and picked her up. "Come on sprout, your chariot awaits! Mum and dad are waiting!"
"My chariot?" Ginny was slightly confused, especially as Bill hadn't picked her up since before, he left the house.
Ginny was unceremoniously chucked up onto Bills shoulders, being escorted outside with all her brothers following. She had to duck her head underneath the doorframe to avoid whacking her head, and when she righted herself, she saw her mum and dad waiting by the Evans family Impala. "Wha…?"
"Alex let me borrow it for this morning, I thought you'd appreciate a ride in something more luxurious than the Anglia." Arthur smiled as he reached up to take Ginny's hand, "Happy birthday my princess."
"Thanks dad, but where are we going? I'm not even dressed!"
"There's a muggle café that's just opened in town, a breakfast spot that welcomes people in all states of dress." Bill explained.
Ginny felt a little giddy at the prospect of going into town and going to a muggle café. "Really? But there's not enough seats in there!"
"That's alright dear, Bill and Charlie will side Apparate there with the twins, so there's enough room for everyone." Molly explained, "And the Evans and Potters will meet us there as well."
"Harry's coming too?" Ginny's smile suddenly widened tenfold, causing her mother to chuckle.
"Yes, I'm assuming Harry will be there as well."
Hopping down from Bills shoulders, Ginny rushed over to the car, where Ron opened her door for her like a gentleman. "Your ride awaits M'lady." He cheekily greeted.
"Why thank you good sir!" Ginny smiled back.
Percy hopped in the car the other side, offering Ginny a cup of tea from a thermos as Molly and Arthur jumped in the front. At that moment, Ginny was feeling very pampered. As they set off down the road, the tell-tale signs of Apparation pops sounded off, signalling that her other brothers were already on their way. As they drove into town, Molly turned in her seat and pointed her wand at Ginny.
"Now, we can't have you going and meeting Harry with your hair looking like that can we." With a simple wave of her wand and a muttered spell, Molly fixed Ginny's hair into a French braid.
Blushing, Ginny felt behind her and pulled her hair in front, looking in wonder at the braid her mother had made her. "You haven't braided my hair in years mum…"
"Yes, well, I thought that you deserved to be spoiled on your birthday dear." Molly smiled.
The rest of the trip was spent in comfortable silence, as Percy kept offering Ginny tea and Ron talked to her about the latest scores from the Hollyhead Harpies VS Chudley Cannons game. Of course, it was a slaughter for the Cannons, who helped the Harpies secure their 5th victory for the season.
As they pulled into town, Ginny smiled at the sights of all the muggle shops and houses. It wasn't often that they went into Ottery Saint Catchpole, mostly it was her mother or her older siblings that were allowed to go in. Of course, since Harry and Rose had moved into town, she'd found herself venturing into town more and more often, much to her mother's displeasure.
Somewhere near the centre of town, Arthur pulled into a side alley and parked the car. Once again, Ron was ever the gentleman and helped Ginny out of the car, even holding out his hand for her to grab. Around the corner of the alley was the café that her parents had mentioned. It was a quaint Victorian style townhouse that had obviously been converted. Above the door read a sign saying 'The Roosting Nest B&B and Café'. Feeling giddy, Ginny rushed inside, hoping to find her other brothers and of course Harry and Rose. She wasn't disappointed, as in the far corner of the café, sat around a several tables put together, sat the combined Evans, Potter, Black and Lupin family, who were animatedly talking with her elder brothers.
"So, you're telling me, that some old Egyptian Pharaoh decided to put a charm on his tomb that would shrink thieves 'you know what's'?" Ginny overheard Sirius talking to her brother Bill.
"Oh, trust me, that wasn't the worst of it…no, the worst part was that it also shrunk your…oh, Ginny!"
Ginny gave a sweet smile towards Bill, ignoring the conversation. "Brother dearest. I hope I didn't interrupt the rather, 'enlightening' conversation you were having."
Bill had the decency to blush, as he pulled out a chair next to him. "I have no idea what you're talking about, we were just discussing some work tales."
"Ah yes, work tales." Rose used quotations marks to stress her sarcasm, "Please do tell us once more how you discovered a cursed tomb that shrunk the male anatomy?"
"William Arthur Weasley!" Molly huffed up to her eldest son, "How dare you talk about such uncivilized matters whilst in the presence of young ladies!"
Feeling as though her job was done, Ginny ignored the offered chair next to Bill and instead sat herself in between a now beaming Harry and a chuckling Ron. Turning to the former, Ginny was surprised at the expression on Harry's face. "Happy birthday Gin…"
Feeling herself smiling again, Ginny blushed and ducked her head as she replied. "Thanks Harry."
"So, what's good on the menu here? Probably nothing to rival mums cooking." Ron said as he perused the menu, "Oh, would you look at that! Eat a 2-dozen stack of pancakes and eat for free…"
"Ronald Weasley, you will not be gorging yourself on your sister's birthday." Molly chastised her youngest son.
"But mum! Free food if I eat it all! You know I finish off at least 2 dozen on the weekends, I could do it easily."
By this stage, Harry was about to burst with laughter at his best mates' actions. Indeed, everyone was highly amused by Ron's argument. "Ron, I doubt that anybody wants to see you stuff yourself full of pancakes, even on a normal day." Harry said.
"Come on mate, we could do it together I reckon!"
"That's probably not allowed." Ginny suggested, "Otherwise everyone would be getting it and sharing it amongst themselves."
Looking forlorn, Ron slumped in his seat and continued to search the menu for something that was more reasonable. With the argument of Ron's audacious order out the way, all the non-Weasley's were free to wish Ginny a happy birthday, especially Rose who came over and wrapped her arms around the older girls' shoulders. "Happy birthday Ginny! Now, you're not allowed to grow anymore until I catch up, okay?"
Ginny laughed as she petted Rose's arm. "I'll try not to. Perhaps you need to try eating like Ron sometime?"
"I'm afraid that I'd grow sideways if that's the case!" Rose giggled.
"Oi!" Ron's outburst caused another round of laughter from the girls, who giggled and tittered to themselves. It was a warming sight to see after seeing Ginny's morose mood for the last few weeks.
Once everyone was settled, the waitress came around to take everyone orders for hot drinks. Almost everyone stuck with tea, although Alex and Arthur both ordered black coffee, and Sirius surprised everyone with ordering a latte. Ginny thought she'd spoil herself and get a chocolate milkshake with extra whipped cream on top, even if she felt a little guilty about it. It took some coaxing from Ron that after all it was her birthday, and she deserved a treat.
It didn't take long for everyone's drinks to come out, in perfect order and condition. With everyone now happy and sedated with caffeine or sugar, the groups waitress once more came back to enquire about food, setting off a list of various different brunch and breakfast goodies that the group thought they'd try out. Ginny thought she'd stick to something she knew and decided to get a stack of sweet Belgian Waffles with ice cream and maple syrup. Ron almost got his way with the two dozen stack pancakes before Molly interrupted and ordered him a single half dozen stack. Harry joined Ron with the pancakes, although he did ask if he could have treacle instead of maple syrup. Rose went for an unorthodox choice and had a bowl of granola with mixed fruits and sweet strawberry yogurt.
The wait for the meals left the group plenty of time for the group to chat amongst themselves. Harry took plenty of time to ask Ginny about her birthday plans and what she wanted to do for the rest of the day, since besides the brunch and a dinner later on at night, nothing else had been properly planned.
"I'm happy with a simple game of Quidditch back at the Burrow. Luna should be coming a little later this afternoon so maybe we can conscript her into a match too." Ginny said.
Harry had a funny look on his face as he pictured Luna trying to fly. "Sure, can Luna actually fly?"
"No idea!" Ginny laughed, "But if anyone is up to the challenge it's Luna Lovegood."
Seeing Ginny smile and laugh like that made Harry feel giddy inside. It had been weeks, if not months, since he'd seen her like this, giving him hope that she was on the mend. "I wouldn't worry about Luna anyway, if we have to worry about anyone on a broom it'll be little miss princess Rose."
Hearing her brother being cheeky, Rose decided to bonk him on the head with her stirring spoon. "Watch it mister, I seem to remember getting you a very lovely birthday present not that long ago, perhaps I'd like to remind you that someone else's birthday is approaching soon…"
"Yeah, Ron's, I know. Thanks for reminding me though." Harry gave an innocent smile back.
Looking downright murderous, Rose levelled her spoon at her brother, threatening repercussions if he wasn't careful. Before Rose could inflict anymore damage on her brother, the waitress came with the first round of orders, placating Rose's anger for the moment. Once more the atmosphere turned jovial as everyone tucked into their savoury and sweet brunch treats. In that moment, surrounded by her friends and family, Ginny felt as though a weight had lifted in her heart. Better than any sweet breakfast dessert though, was the sensation of having her Harry next to her again, giving her plenty of opportunities to brush her hand against his, or press even closer to him as they had to squish together around the tables.
Once everyone was stuffed, and tables were cleared, there came the discussion of the bill. Arthur was about to reach for it when instead Sirius got there first and offered to pay it. There was a bit of an argument over who should pay, but Sirius managed to convince Arthur by calling it a Birthday gift for Ginny. It was probably for the best as well, as the Weasley's had underestimated how much muggle money they would need to pay for it all. Thankfully, Sirius always carried a large amount of muggle notes with him just in case of emergencies, although recently he'd also been talking to the Goblins at Gringotts about establishing a muggle bank account so he could access a 'credit card', something that baffled even Sirius.
With the bill sorted, the group split up to find their various ways to the Burrow. Most of the Weasley's chose to Apparate back home, taking multiple trips, mainly so that the Evans could have their family Impala back. Whilst town wasn't a far walk from the Evans residence, getting to the Burrow would be a much longer journey by foot, something the elder Evans weren't keen on.
Slowly everyone trickled into the Burrow, with the last to arrive being the Potters and Evans who took the family car. Remus had excused himself from the day affairs, claiming that he had some preparations to make for the following weeks, although it seemed only Sirius had any true idea what he was up to. Ginny didn't mind either of the two honorary Potter uncles, although she did find that Remus was a little mysterious at times, but very level-headed compared to the rambunctious Sirius Black.
As Ginny had said to Harry, she was more than happy to just play Quidditch all day long. Teams were drawn up, with Harry, Rose, Ginny, Fred and eventually Luna on one side, and Charlie, Bill, George, Percy, and Ron on the other. As the Weasley's didn't own a snitch, Harry and Charlie were forced to give up their seeker skills for being chasers instead. Whilst the teams waited for Luna to arrive, Ron practised using Harry's Nimbus, which he had been using for the rest of the holidays as was agreed on Harry's birthday. Watching from the sidelines, Harry had a wistful look on his face as he watched Ron with his broom.
"Well, at least he hasn't crashed yet." Rose said to her brother. She was floating next to her brother, trying to steady herself.
"I don't think he will, I just wish I was on it instead of these old brooms. Once you fly a fast broom, everything else is just ruined for you." Harry laughed.
Hearing Harry laugh, Ginny slowly floated over to where the Potter siblings were hovering. "How come Ron has your broom, Harry?"
"Oh, he won the right to use it for the rest of the summer when he beat me at the Go-kart race."
Ginny couldn't help but chuckle. "So that was the bet that you made with him. Very foolish Harry, you know he's going to pester you now to ride it all the time."
Shrugging, Harry watched as Ron made a fast flyby of their heads. "I don't mind. So long as I can still have to for practise and games. If Ron ever gets on the team, maybe I'll get him his own Nimbus."
"That's a lot of money Harry." Ginny frowned, "You shouldn't waste your money on us."
Both Rose and Harry looked at each other before chuckling. "Waste? How could we waste money on our favourite family?" Rose said.
"It's hardly wasting money when it's a gift." Harry added, "It makes us happy to see you lot happy."
Ginny blushed at the siblings' words. "Still, I just don't want to make it seem like we're leeching off you both."
"I do believe I made myself clear when Ron said the same thing. You lot are our family; you'll never be a leech." Harry said simply, "Face it, you're stuck with us."
Before Ginny could reply, Ron made a rather dangerous flyby of Harry's head, causing him to swear. "I take that back, I'm gonna murder him!"
Taking off after Ron as fast as he could, Harry started shouting and cursing at Ron, leaving Rose and Ginny alone. "You might be one brother down by the end of the day." Rose giggled.
Ginny giggled back. "Do you think he could take out another couple as well? That way I might get to have a shower in the morning before 10."
"Boys are the worst at that. They take forever in the shower and use up all the hot water, and then complain that we spend too long in there!"
The pair giggled at their brothers' antics before settling into a comfortable silence, watching their brothers chase each other. Rose broke the silence by turning to Ginny. "Ginny?"
"Mhm? What's up Rose?"
"How are you really feeling? I know Harry has been struggling with nightmares, but I've been a terrible friend and haven't checked on you."
Ginny smiled sadly and shrugged. "Harry and I are probably going through the same things. Lots of nightmares and mood swings."
"That sounds about right. You know you can always talk to me about anything, right?" Rose floated over and wrapped an arm around Ginny's middle.
Nodding her understanding, Ginny leaned into Rose. "I know. It's just hard to talk about. The things that Riddle made me see…what he made me do. I don't know if I'll ever really get over it, but I think I'll get stronger."
Rose smiled at her friend's mature response, squeezing her side a little harder. "Sometimes life doesn't let us grow up normally, sometimes we're forced to grow up quicker."
Ginny was silent for a moment as she thought about Rose's words. She understood that Rose and Harry had gone through their own terrors, that they hadn't really had the opportunity to be children at all. That was one thing that Ginny appreciated at least, that she had her loving family and a normal childhood.
Around midday, a lone blonde figure was seen skipping along the Weasley driveway, carrying a small basket. Ginny and Rose immediately spotted their other friend and used their brooms to quickly fly over to her.
"Luna! You're here!" Ginny launched herself off her broom and swept Luna up into a tight hug.
If Luna was surprised, she didn't show it, instead she just returned the hug equally. "Hello Ginny, happy birthday. You're looking better, happier even."
"I am happy Luna." Ginny smiled as she pulled back, "It's been a wonderful day so far. Come on, everyone's waiting for you."
Ginny guided Luna up the driveway, looking up as Rose slowly floated down to the ground, gripping onto her broom fiercely. "Oh, hello Rose. What're you doing up there?"
"I'm…trying…to get down!" Rose gritted through teeth as she slowly landed, "I hate brooms."
Dusting herself off, Rose went over and hugged Luna. "Perhaps you just need more practise, Rose." Luna said.
"No way, I'm only up there because it's Ginny's birthday. Otherwise, my feet need to stay on the ground."
The three girls walked back to the Burrow, opting to stay on the ground as Rose was afraid that she'd hit a tree on her way back. Spotting Luna from the air, the boys all greeted Luna with various waves and shouts as she looked up and smiled. "Is Harry chasing Ron for any reason in particular?" She asked.
"Let's just say that Ron's getting a little cocky on Harry's broom." Rose laughed.
Indeed, her observation was well made as a second later they heard a loud thump. Ron hadn't pulled up hard enough and smacked into one of the outlying trees. Thankfully the Nimbus floated back down to the ground safely, leaving Ron dazed and stuck in a tree, but unhurt.
"How's that Nimbus working out for you Ronnikins?" Charlie laughed as he helped his brother down from the tree.
"I um, I meant to do that. Just wanted to see if Harry would follow." Ron justified his actions.
"Sure, sure, little brother." Charlie just laughed.
Blushing in embarrassment, Ron looked up to see Harry circling overhead on one of the older Cleansweeps the Weasley's owned, laughing his head off. "Honestly Ron, you're lucky you didn't put a dent in your head!" Harry laughed.
"I think the only dent that he'd be causing…" Fred started.
"Would be a dent in the tree." George ended.
Nobody could stop themselves laughing at that point, causing an already red Ron to go even redder in embarrassment. Thankfully he was saved by the unlikeliest of sources, Luna.
"I don't think Ron meant to hit the tree; I think perhaps an earworm made him crash instead. You should make sure to see a healer, Ron."
"Um, yeah…thanks Luna."
Everybody chuckled at Luna's reasoning but didn't question it. Instead, they handed her a broom and told her the teams, instructing her what the rules for the scratch match was. Whilst she did seem to be largely nonplussed about the game, Luna certainly didn't let her team mates down. Where the other players, minus Rose, and Percy, all had training and their own favourite moves under their belt, Luna was a force of mystery, going completely off the book more than once to help her team.
Her moves were unknown to anybody on the field, which meant that whilst Bills team had Ron on the Nimbus, it couldn't be used to its full potential as Luna would simply go limp on her broom and drop several feet, causing Ron to fly straight over her. What surprised everyone, and no one at the same time, was the perfect synchronisation that Ginny and Harry had when working as a team. Not even the twins could work as well together as they did, it was almost like they had a sixth sense for when the other wanted to throw the ball to them or move one way or the other. This meant that Rose was happily at the back, guarding the makeshift goal, although more than once she had to cover her eyes and let a goal through as the Quaffle came soaring towards her. That move certainly earned her some chastising from her brother, although Rose was more than happy to respond with a raspberry.
The game went on for most of the afternoon, both teams rather even in skill, and Ron with the Nimbus matched up to Ginny and Harry's excellent teamwork. And whilst mostly everyone was focused on either scoring a goal or guarding it, the twins were engaged in their own version of aerial combat, hitting a bludger backwards and forwards towards each other until one of them succumbed to the others hits. It seemed though that their skills were a match for each other, something that surprised no one, and so most of the game for the twins was spent cracking jokes at each-others expense or making fun of their siblings and friends.
Finally, when the sun began to set on the horizon, it was decided that each team would go for sudden death, and that whoever scored first would be crowned the winner. Taking no prisoners in their ferocity, Bills team swooped in as Ron, Charlie and Bill all worked together to try and overwhelm the staunch defence of Harry and Ginny. What they didn't account for however was Luna's ability to throw the entire game on its head. Flying incredibly low to the ground, Luna was ready for when Ginny dropped the Quaffle, the former catching it in her hands and heading straight towards an awaiting Harry who happily zoomed off and scored the final goal on an unsuspecting Percy. With an almighty cheer, Ginny's team came together in a huddle in the air and celebrated as Bills team were left scratching their heads on how the slight little blonde managed to outsmart them all.
With the Quidditch match firmly won by Ginny's team, it was quickly decided to head back inside to enquire about the state of Ginny's birthday dinner, as more than one player was famished from the exercise they'd performed. As they walked through the Burrows door, the smells of a homemade roast dinner wafted up their noses, guiding them straight to the kitchen where Molly and Juni were hard at work making a spread that would feed everyone.
"Oh, done already, are you? Excellent, I can conscript some of you then." Molly smiled at her children, "Bill, Charlie, could you go and help your father help set up the outside pavilion?"
"Of course, mum, we'll get right on it!" Bill gave his mother a kiss on the cheek before going to find Arthur, dragging a moaning Charlie on the way.
Seeing as they had some time to themselves before dinner was ready, the Twins and Percy split off from the others, leaving Ginny and her friends to have free reign over the loungeroom. Ron was quick to grab a stack of cards in case they wanted to play exploding snap, although Harry put forward his own idea for what they should do.
"I brought this muggle game that you guys might like, it's called Monopoly." Harry brought out the game from a bag he'd brought along.
"Monopoly? That's that?" Ron asked.
"It's kinda like a property game, where you buy properties around London and charge people rent as they go past your building. Basically, if you run out of money you lose." Harry explained.
Harry explained the rules in a little more detail before everyone agreed that they'd like to play. Rose was a little dubious of the decision, only because Harry and herself had played with their family the other night, only for it to end with Sirius and Rose both having a fit at Harry and Remus who were naturally gifted with the game, or just lucky…or cheating as Rose accused her brother.
"Alright, so I'll be the banker since Rose and I have already played, and Rose hates numbers." Harry cheekily joked.
In retaliation, Rose flicked her brother behind the ear. "Watch it you."
Harry rolled his eyes as he began to dish out the right amount of cash for each player. The Purebloods found it quite amusing to play with the paper money, although Ron did end up accidentally ripping one in half, thankfully it was only a single pound note.
Once everyone was acquainted with the rules of the game, they began to play. Harry made sure to keep an eye on his sister, not believing her when she said she wouldn't cheat. Within the first few minutes of the game, he'd already had to slap her hand away from the bank multiple times.
Half way through, it seemed as though everyone had a firm understanding of the game, although Ron was grumbling a fair bit, mostly as he had to pay rent to Ginny just after passing Go. "Honestly, I get the 200 pounds and then you take half of it!"
Ginny just giggled as she counted up her money. "Well Ron, perhaps you should've invested in more property instead of aiming for Park Lane and Mayfair."
"But they have the highest rents!" Ron complained.
"But there's only two spots. You need equal coverage." Harry explained.
Grumbling to himself, Ron continued on through the game, getting cash flows very rarely and whittling down his money until eventually he was completely broke, having to mortgage his property. With Ron out the game, Rose picked up the blue property set and built-up hotels on both, making them especially deadly. Unfortunately, Luna fell for one of these traps and lost almost all her money, not that it bothered the blonde.
"Money is only an abstract construct anyway. I would much rather live in the forest than a flat on Regent Street."
Everyone had a chuckle at the very Luna comment. Rose did offer to bail Luna out but the blonde refused, happy to watch from the sidelines as Rose, Harry and Ginny battled it out in a game of attrition. The first one down was Rose, who swore and stamped her feet as she landed on Harrys Bond Street, loosing the majority of her money. After that she had to mortgage the blue set, losing it to Harry who nabbed it up. Now it was between Ginny and Harry, although the latter felt bad about wanting to win on Ginny's birthday…that was of course until Rose whispered in Harry's ear about how Ginny beat him at Go Karts.
Resolved at wanting to win, Harry committed a large sum of his money to invest in hotels on each of his properties. Ginny tried to do the same but couldn't quite afford enough. This turned out to be Ginny's downfall, as once she'd spent all her money, she ended up landing on one of Harry's properties. It spiralled out of control from there, a series of mortgages and selling off upgrades only briefly stemmed the haemorrhaging cashflow that landed Ginny broke. Within an hour of play, Harry had won, a large stash of cash now under his belt, and almost every single piece of property.
Raising his hands in victory, Harry let out a triumphal cheer, as Ginny pouted. "I suppose it's only fair that you beat me on my birthday after I did the same."
Harry offered a comforting smile as he reached out and squeezed Ginny's hand. "Sorry Gin, it had to be done. Couldn't let Rose think I was going soft."
Ginny returned the hand squeeze and smile. "It's alright Harry, I understand."
"You two are the worst." Rose snorted, "conspiring against your friend and sister."
"How do you think I feel Rose! I'm her closest brother and she ate up all my money like a damn tax collector!" Ron complained.
Rolling her eyes, Ginny helped Harry pack up the board as everyone, minus Luna, continued to argue with each other. "I wouldn't say you're my 'closest' brother Ron, you have to compete with Bill for that."
"Did someone say my name?" As if on cue, Bill popped his head into the loungeroom, "What're you lot up to then hey?"
"Harry introduced us to this Muggle game, Monopsmaly…" Ron tried to say.
"Monopoly Ron." Ginny corrected, "It seems like a good game to break apart a family."
Bill had to laugh at the observation from his youngest sibling. "I've heard of it, some of the Muggleborn Curse Breakers have mentioned it before and brought a copy. We played it with real Galleons once…that was a mistake."
"Better not tell mum about that, you know how she feels about gambling." Ron snickered.
"Indeed. Although I think I'm already in the doghouse from breakfast." Bill chucked, "Anyway you lot, dinner is ready in the garden if you're hungry."
"Like that even needs asking." Ron said, "I'm famished!"
Everyone laughed. "Of course, you are Ron." Ginny said.
Filling out to the garden, the various scents they smelled before were amplified tenfold by the finished products now laid out on the table. "Ginny dear, the head of the table is all set for you darling girl." Molly pulled out the seat where Arthur would normally sit as the family patriarch.
Blushing from all the attention she was getting, Ginny took a seat, and made sure that Harry sat next to her. Bill took the other side, having missed out at breakfast at sitting with his sister. Molly and Juniper helped serve everyone up a portion of the dinner, piling their plates high. With the unusually warm weather, Molly brought out a couple pitchers of homemade lemonade and lemon lime cordial with aromatic bitters. The meal was a joyous affair, made even more interesting with the arrival of Remus, who took a verbal beating from Sirius on his dishevelled appearance.
"Honestly Moony, you look like you've been at a brot…at a pub all day!" Sirius teased.
"I'm sorry, I got distracted and lost track of time, I ended up fudging my Apparition and landed in your well kempt rose bushes, Molly. Very…spikey."
Molly seemed unusually pleased. "Oh excellent! I was hoping they'd make a good safety guard from unwanted Apparitions."
"Are you saying Remus is unwanted, dear." Arthur teased his wife.
Spluttering, Molly threatened her husband with a wooden spoon, shutting him up to nothing but a small giggle shared by Sirius, Alex, and himself. Once the savoury delights were polished off, Molly brought out a triple layered chocolate cake with strawberry cream filling. Ginny's eyes lit up in delight as her mother laid a massive slab of cake on a plate and passed it off to her. Not even Ron dug into their dessert with as much gusto as Ginny. Sweet tastes of strawberry, chocolate and cream filling Ginny's mouth, a sensation that made all her problems seem insignificant compared to the delicious treat in front of her.
Hearing a giggle to the left of her, Ginny turned and blushed when she saw Harry was looking at her. "What?"
"Nothing, it's just that I thought Ron was the only messy eater in the Weasley family."
Ginny blushed brighter and took more deliberate attempts to contain her mess. "It's been a while since I've had anything so delicious."
"I know the feeling." Harry said, "Same thing happens to me when I have Treacle Tart." Just the thought of the sticky, sweet treat made Harry's mouth water.
"So, firecracker, has your birthday been up to scratch?" Bill interrupted the pair.
Nodding, Ginny waited till her mouth was clear to speak. "Absolutely. I think the only thing that could've made it better is if I won at Monopoly."
Even though Harry knew Ginny was teasing, he still blushed, feeling bad. "Sorry about that Gin."
"Don't apologise! It's just a game."
Bill looked over at Harry and grinned. "You breaking my sister's heart already Potter?"
"What?" Harry looked shocked and embarrassed, "N-no never! I didn't mean…"
"Relax Harry, it's a joke. I know firecracker can take a loss."
Ginny stared daggers at Bill. "Don't be mean to Harry, Bill. Or didn't you forget who scored the winning goal today."
Bill looked slightly annoyed at the reminder, having lost to someone a fraction of his age. "Yes, well, I'll chalk that up to luck. Next time we'll have to get a snitch and find out who's the better seeker between you and Charlie."
"I am!" Came Charlie's reply from halfway down the table.
Ron, who was closer to Charlie; let out a snort. "Good luck with that Charlie! Harry's the best seeker I've ever seen!"
"Going against the family there, little brother." Charlie warned.
Ron gave a snort again. "Just stating the facts. Besides, Harry's good as family anyway."
Feeling touched, Harry ducked his head in embarrassment, only to feel the light squeeze of a hand on his own. Looking up, he saw Ginny's bright smile directed at him, the embarrassment replaced with love. "Face it Harry, you and Rose are honorary Weasley's and there's nothing you can do about it."
"Not like I'd want too anyway." Harry joked, "At least Rose fits in with her hair, perhaps I need to consider dying mine."
"Absolutely not mister." Ginny gave Harry a staunch look.
Raising his hands in defeat, Harry smiled as he realised exactly why Ginny wanted his hair to stay unchanged. The interaction between the two caught Bills attention, eyeing the two with curiosity. He knew then that he'd have to have a chat with his parents about what exactly he's missed whilst away in Egypt.
Once dinner was finished and everyone had their fill, Molly and Arthur directed everyone towards the Burrow's parlour so Ginny could open her presents. Juni and Alex volunteered to help Molly clean up, making short work of the dishes whilst Bill, Percy and Charlie helped take down the outdoor dining set and pavilion. Walking into the parlour, Ginny's eyes almost burst out of her head as she saw the pile of presents waiting for her. She couldn't help but think that all the effort to make her feel special was a way to beg for forgiveness for their inaction through her ordeal. Once again, Ginny took a seat next to Harry, although this time Rose made sure to quickly get in on her other side, booting Ron out the way and causing him to land on his bum. Grumbling, Ron was going to make a complaint before Rose battered her eyelashes at him and begged forgiveness.
The first round of gifts for Ginny came from her family. Molly and Arthur chipped in and got her a brand-new school trunk with an expandable interior. Before then, Ginny had been using Bills old trunk, and whilst it was still in reasonable condition, it still had a bit of wear and tear.
Her eldest brother, Bill, got her a magical water canteen that always kept its contents chilled, perfect for hot summer days. It could even be shrunk and put into her book bag. Charlie meanwhile got her a set of Wizarding comics about a dragon tamer and his muggle companion. Percy gave a very usual 'Percy' gift, consisting of a set of new quills, scented parchment and a small handguide on how to achieve your goals during class.
The Twins gave a selection of joke products and Bertie Botts Every Flavoured Beans, and Ron got Ginny a large box of Honeydukes chocolate.
The Evans had gotten Ginny a few new articles of clothing, including a few sundresses that complemented Ginny's flaming red hair. Remus and Sirius had gotten her a book on useful self defence charms that every Witch should know to fend off inappropriate Wizards.
Last of all came Rose and Harry's presents. When Rose passed off her package to Ginny, the pair shared a smile as Ginny ripped it open. Inside was a burgundy dyed leatherbound journal, with a metal clasp on the side.
"It's a personal diary that you can charm to open to you only. You can also set yourself daily inspiring messages for when you first open it up." Rose explained.
A quiver came to Ginny's lips as she nodded her understanding. "Thank you Rose…"
Although her voice was only a whisper, Rose still heard her best friend, bringing her into a close hug. The gesture was important, as Rose had offered Ginny a piece of privacy that was taken from her by Riddle. All her private thoughts, dreams and wishes were written in that diary and the shade of Riddle had exploited that. Now, Ginny had the ability to hide those private thoughts and reflect on them in the safety of her own abode.
Finally, Harry passed a small package to Ginny once she'd broken away from Rose. At first, Ginny tried to refuse, saying that the wand she'd gotten from Ollivanders was more than enough.
"But that was for Christmas your wally, this is for your birthday!" Harry argued.
Ginny relented and took the package with a smile and a small thank you. Opening it up delicately, her eyes went wide as she looked at the Ankh shaped jewellery. "Oh Harry, it's wonderful…"
"It's more than just a piece of jewellery Gin." Harry said, "It's charmed to protect the wearers mind from attacks on their own self will. It means that dark objects can…can never possess you aga-."
Before Harry could even finish his explanation, Ginny had launched forward to wrap her arms around him, letting out an almighty sob. She wasn't the only one to sob, as Molly and Juniper too had their mouths covered as they saw the absolute heart felt, selfless action that Harry had just committed.
"H-Harry…" Ginny sobbed, "You…y-you don't know what this m-means to me."
Rubbing soft circles on her back, Harry cooed soothingly. "I just want to protect you Gin, for when I'm not there beside you."
Ginny stayed buried in Harry's shoulder for a few moments longer before withdrawing. "Could you help me put it on please?" She asked, turning her back to Harry.
Slipping his arms around her, Harry gently clasped the chain behind Ginny's neck, the temptation to kiss her freckled neck so very tempting to him. "There, it's on. It's got a self-cleaning charm as well. I should let you know that Sirius got it for me from his family vault. It belonged to one of his uncles."
Ginny looked up to Sirius and smiled broadly. "Thank you, Sirius, thank you both of you."
Sirius nodded and smiled in return, as Molly reached over and squeezed his hand in thanks. "You should know Ginny, that the Ankh won't protect a strong Imperious curse, but in that situation, Harry and I felt that you were more than capable of sending a well-placed curse back towards your attacker anyway."
Smiling and blushing once again, Ginny dipped her head to hide her embarrassment. Fiddling with the piece of jewellery now around her neck, Ginny couldn't help but feel safer. But in that moment, she also remembered that it wasn't the first piece of jewellery Harry had given her, and that the ring that use to hand around her neck was now gone…forever.
With presents now finished, Ginny's guests made a move to head home. Bill and Charlie were staying the night in their old room but would be heading off in the morning, as such they offered to Apparate and escort Luna home so she wouldn't have to walk back through the night. The Evans also made a move to round up Rose and Harry into the Impala, although Sirius and Remus would Apparate their own way home to Stag Run.
As Harry and Rose were leaving, Arthur pulled Harry aside for a private chat. "That was a very noble thing you did there Harry." The Weasley patriarch smiled.
"It was the right thing to do Mr Weasley. She deserves to be protected." Harry blushed, embarrassed to be talking to Arthur about this.
Arthur for his part just smiled and nodded. There was a silence for a moment before Arthur spoke up again. "I see the way you two look at each other lad, it's hard not to. I know she cares about you deeply, and you vice versa. After all, how could you not, the ordeals you have both gone through would be enough to bond two people for life."
Blushing deeply, Harry stood and listened to Arthur talk to him. "I just want you to know Harry, that whatever happens in the future, you have my blessing. I could think of no finer young man than yourself to think of as family…although if you heard Ron, then I do believe you and your sister are already seen as such."
"Thank you, Mr Weasley." Harry blushed, "Ginny…means a lot to me. She's one of my best friends and I would do anything for her, just as I would for Ron, or my own sister. I just hope I can protect her."
"She's a strong woman Harry, Ginny doesn't always need a protector. But it is welcome to know that she has her back covered by dear friends." Arthur smiled, "Now go on, you better head home, almost time to start packing for another year."
Harry laughed. "Make sure Ron packs everything the night before this time."
"I'm sure that even if Molly nailed a to-do list on his head, Ron would still forget something." Arthur laughed along.
Sharing one last goodbye, Harry walked back towards his awaiting family, but not before Arthur could call out one last time. "You're a good man, Harry Potter, don't ever forget that."
Harry gave a firm nod in response, seeing it more as a reminder than a compliment. He would have to strive to be the best he could possibly be, to protect not only his family and friends, but one day defeat the darkest wizard the world had ever seen.

As always, the school rush just after Ginny's birthday was chaotic. With Hogwarts letters now delivered and the book list released, the Potters and Weasley's made numerous trips to Diagon Alley to purchase supplies and new books. Harry was surprised to see that the defence books this year were some that he already owned, mostly gifts from Remus and Sirius, so he surmised that the teacher this year would actually be competent. Another cause of celebration was Percy receiving the position of Head Boy, alongside Penelope Clearwater. The twins constantly mocked their elder brother, even stealing the badge multiple times to change the wording to read 'Head Ponce'. Molly couldn't be prouder, as now the family had two Head Boys in the family, Bill being the first. Finally, the morning of September 1st rolled around, and whilst Harry and Rose had no doubt that the Weasley household would be up in arms, the situation at the Evans was relaxed in comparison. The siblings had finished packing the night before, getting all their clothes ready and school supplies. Sirius had even treated them a few sweet treats that they could enjoy when they got to Hogwarts.
What surprised Harry and Rose the most though, was the absence of Remus. Sirius chalked this up to saying he had an important job interview to go to and that he'd see them at Christmas time. This left them feeling slightly disappointed that their other favourite uncle wouldn't be there to see them off, although it was made better by the fact that Sirius would see them off at the station, wanting to make sure Harry and Rose were safe from any potential attacks by Pettigrew. As usual, the Potters got to the station with plenty of time to spare, and so they found a compartment and waited around for the Weasley's to show. Hermione was the first one they spotted, greeting the bushy haired witch with a quick hug. More interesting however was the cat carrying case that she was holding.
"Um, Hermione? What's in the cage?" Harry asked.
The question seemed to light up Hermione's face, as she sat her things down and pulled open the cage, pulling out a great big ball of orange fluff.
"Meet Crookshanks! I had some money left over from my birthday, so my parents let me get a pet. He was left all alone at the store and nobody wanted him, so I got him!"
Harry and Rose peered at the strange looking cat, who's squashed flat face contained very wise, yellow, looking eyes, almost inquisitive, as if it was investigating the pair. "So, you got a cat…"
"Yes! Isn't he gorgeous? He's so clever too! Managed to find out where I hid his food and then open the cupboard. But then again, he is half Kneazle." Hermione gushed.
"What's a Kneazle?" Rose asked.
"They're a very intelligent species of magical felines that are kept by Wizards. They often have dual tails and pointy ears, but Crookshanks doesn't have those features." Hermione explained. Instead, Crookshanks had a bottlebrush tail and face that looked as if he had ploughed straight into a wall.
"Are you sure he isn't half lion? He's bloody massive." Harry surmised, looking at how long the cat stretched out while Hermione held him.
Everyone had gathered around at this point, even Sirius, who upturned his nose at the creature. "Ugh, cats. Honestly, I'm surprised people still own them. Dogs are much better."
"I think you're biased Uncle Siri." Rose cheeked, "After all, you are a mutt."
"A mutt! I'm a purebred thank you very much!" Sirius pouted.
Harry and Rose both rolled their eyes. "Yeah? What purebred looks like a scraggy black pound dog then?" Harry teased.
Sirius scoffed and tried to think of a reply but ended up just waving his hand in defeat and ignoring the insults. Looking back at the cat, Sirius swore that he had seen it before, and the way that Crookshanks was staring at Sirius gave him the impression that he was being remembered.
Everyone, minus Sirius, had a hold of Crookshanks while the group waited for their other friends. Rose seemed to have the best affinity with the animal after Hermione, even eliciting a purr from the sour puss. When Harry held him, a sudden memory jogged in his mind of another Ginger cat that he used to chase, although he wasn't sure if this memory was real or just a long-forgotten dream. After everyone had a hold and cuddle, Hermione put him back in his carry box, after a bit of a struggle that saw him put his paws either side of the hole. A little while after that, the Henderson's showed their mugs, which meant that Sirius could have a deep discussion with Lennox about the continuing manhunt for Pettigrew.
"They couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery." Lennox spat bitterly, "The Auror's these days are mostly yesmen that the Minister helps through the training. Gone are the brilliant ones like Madeye, Theseus Scamander, the Longbottoms, and even Scrimgeour."
Sirius hummed in agreement. "Are there no good Auror's left?"
"A few. Shacklebolt is certainly a good bet for head Auror. Then there's Proudfoot and Savage, a pair of numpties but they're alright with a good command. And then there's Moody's protegee, Tonks. Clumsy but determined." Lennox said.
"I'm sorry, did you say Tonks?"
Lennox nodded. "I did, do you know her?"
Sirius let out a barking laugh. "Tonks is my cousin! Nymphy is my cousin Andromeda's daughter. Which reminds me, I should really go see them."
"You should Sirius, family is important. And who knows, maybe Tonk's can put a good word in for you for your application." Lennox laughed.
The group continued to stand around and wait for the Weasleys, even as more and more people began to arrive and board the train. Eventually Luna appeared as well, joyous and bubbly as ever as she skipped over to her friends. Rose was quick to welcome her with a hug and pulled her into their little circle.
"Ready for another year Luna?" Sirius enquired as he watched the young lady bounce on her heels.
"Oh yes, Daddy even spoiled me with a new book on lost magical species. Its by an obscure author, Attenborough or something like that." Luna replied.
Hermione raised an eyebrow at the name but didn't comment, learning previously that getting into arguments with Luna was just not worth the headache. "We'll have to let you know what elective subjects are suited for you then Luna."
"I already know what I'll be taking. Divination and Care for Magical creatures." Luna replied.
"But Luna, those are easy subjects!" Hermione protested, "Surely you'd be better off doing what Harry and I are doing, Ancient Runes and Arithmancy."
Luna just gave Hermione one of her dreamy smiles. "It's only easy if you don't apply yourself Hermione. I have always been fascinated with the art of Divination. Did you know my grandmother was a seer?"
Hermione shook her head. "No, I didn't. Did she actually 'predict' anything?"
"Oh yes, several droughts and even a volcanic eruption."
"But there aren't any volcanoes in Britain!" Hermione said.
Once again, Luna just smiled as if Hermione's argument was completely mental. "I didn't say it was an eruption here Hermione, it was in Italy."
Although Hermione wanted to continue arguing, she saw that there was plenty of logic in Luna's case, and so decided to simply give up and talk to Harry instead.
Finally, with only 10 minutes to spare, the Weasley's arrived onto the platform. There was a mad dash by everyone to get onto the train to find a spare compartment, although Ron and Ginny saw their friends and made the decision to see them first.
"Morning you lot, did you secure us a compartment?" Ron enquired.
"Hello to you too Ron, Harry and Rose have a compartment ready for us in the middle." Hermione replied.
Ron nodded, greeting his other friends before spotting the carry case by Hermione's feet. "'Mione…what on earth is that?"
Once again, Hermione's face lit up as she dragged a very annoyed looking Crookshanks out of his cage. Ron looked a little taken aback by the flat face of the cat, but tried to give it a pet anyway, only to earn a fang in return. "Bloody hell! Keep that thing away from me, it's mental!"
"Oh Ronald, honestly, he's just a little grumpy. He'll be happier once we're at the castle and he can roam and catch rats."
Ron rubbed the hand which Crookshanks cut into, not quite believing Hermione's words. "I'm glad I don't have scabbers anymore, I reckon that thing would be chasing him halfway through the castle."
"Sounds like a good thing to me, considering he did turn out to be a traitorous bastard." Harry spat.
Seemingly forgetting that detail, Ron had the decency to blush and duck his head. Whilst Ron and Hermione bickered about Crookshanks, Ginny had slowly made her way over to Harry after greeting Luna and Rose. "Hey…"
"Hey Gin, excited?" Harry smiled, grabbing Ginny's hand.
"A little…no, not really actually."
Frowning, Harry gave Ginny's hand a light squeeze as he pulled her closer so they could talk privately. "You're worried about what people will think, aren't you?"
Ginny nodded. "What if they all hate me? I hardly got to know any of my other dorm mates except for Rose and Luna."
"Well, if they don't like you, then that's their problem. But we don't know that. Anyway, Rose and Luna will always be there for you." Harry concluded.
Ginny didn't quite believe Harry's statement, but nodded in agreement anyway, just happy to be in his presence. "I've got the Ankh on."
"Good, I just wish it could do more." Harry said.
Ginny shook her head and chuckled. "It does more than enough Harry. Not only do I appreciate the protection, but I also appreciate the sentiment."
"And that is?"
Ginny smiled. "That you'll always be there to protect me, and if you're not then you'll find ways to make sure I am."
It was Harry's turn to smile, as he squeezed her hand. "I know you're more than capable Gin, but this is just an added layer of protection."
Ginny didn't argue, more than happy to take Harry's protection if he was freely handing it out. She was about to reply when the Hogwarts Express blew its whistle, signalling that it was soon to depart. This triggered a mad scramble as everyone began to say goodbye to their parents and guardians. Molly even managed to sneak a quick hug to her children's friends, giving an extra back breaking hug to Harry, squeezing the life out of him. Harry couldn't help but notice that Molly's hugs were always more emotional towards him than the others, perhaps it was the fact that she knew Harry cared deeply for her daughter. Nobody knew that Molly and Arthur had already begun discussions on when Harry and Ginny would publicly acknowledge their relationship.
The group found the compartment that the Potter siblings had reserved, squishing in as best they could with 8 people. Harry found himself pressed up against the entrance, with Ginny firmly pressed up against his side. There was no way that he was going to complain about his current situation. As the train pulled out, students stuck their heads out the windows to wave to their families left on the platform. Rose managed to squeeze underneath Luna, waving to Sirius as he ran along in his Animagus form.
As the train pulled out of the station and into London, the group sat in silent contemplation, readying themselves for another year at Hogwarts.
"So, another year another incident no doubt." Alec broke the silence that filled the compartment, "What are we placing bets on this time? Voldemort? Dragon? Maybe a Mummy?"
"You really shouldn't joke about that you know, Alec." Hermione chastised.
Alec just shrugged his shoulders. "No matter what we do Hermione, we always end up with some sort of trouble. Personally, I blame Harry."
The joke was good natured judging by Alec's smile, but Harry still scowled. "Yeah, well, when an evil mass murder kills your parents and then wants to do the same to you, you tend to attract danger."
"No offence was meant, Harry." Alec apologised, "Just stating the facts. Hogwarts has never been as dangerous before you arrived. Hell, even during the war there weren't as many incidents, and students were having full on combat in the hallways."
"Whilst it may be the obvious, there's no way you can blame Harry for any of it." Ginny snapped.
Throwing his hands up in defeat, Alec laughed awkwardly. "I know. Harry's a hero, we all get it. I'll stop making bad jokes now."
"Wise decision mate, you don't want to anger Ginny or Rose." Ron laughed, only earning him a glare from said women.
"Perhaps we should all just play a game instead of blaming others for our misfortune." Luna broke in, "Ron, you always have cards with you, perhaps some exploding snap to pass the time?"
Pulling out a deck of cards from his pocket, Ron began to distribute cards to those playing, as Alec and Hermione set up the tables. "Honestly Luna, probably one of the best ideas you've had." Ron quipped.
"Obviously you haven't heard enough of them then." Rose replied, "Luna's head is full of good ideas."
"Why thank you Rose, I'm sure though that there are plenty of people who'd disagree with you." Luna smiled.
Rose just waved her hand in dismission. "Who cares what others think, we all love you."
The last words seemed to give Luna a case of speechlessness, instead staring at Rose with an intense gaze, before she turned to face the window with a small smile on her lips and a few private whispered words to herself.
"Alright, lets do this shall we?" Harry started off the game going first.
Playing exploding snap was always an easy way to pass the time. There were various accusations against others of cheating, and laughter when someone lost and had the deck explode in their face. And as usual, they all stuffed themselves full of sweets once the trolley Witch had gone past. Harry was also enjoying the fact that he had Ginny basically leaning against him for the entire trip. He could practically feel her body heat radiating off her, not to mention the intoxicating scent of her shampoo drifting up his nose. All in all, it was a pleasant trip, and it led everyone to believe that perhaps this year wouldn't be so bad.
Of course, that came to a very sudden end after they crossed over the border into Scotland. Rain began to pelt down onto the Earth, causing a fog to appear over the countryside. Gone was the shining sun that was out earlier in the day. It was though an unknown force had caused the heavens to open up and begin soaking the Earth below. Suddenly, the train came to a stretching halt. Ron, Alec and Rose were thrown from their seats, landing on the floor or their siblings in the case of Rose, who flew straight into Harry's arms. Thankfully he caught her before she did herself some damage, unlike Alec who came back up with a bloodied nose.
"Fucking hell, I think I broke my nose!" He swore.
"What the bloody hell is going on, you'd think they were mental for stopping the train like that." Ron said in anger.
Harry, who was making sure his sister was alright, looked around the compartment. "Is anybody else hurt?"
"I'm okay." Rose said, sitting back on her own seat, "Thanks for the catch."
"Anytime sis." Harry smiled, "What do you think's going on?"
Hermione looked out the window to surmise their surroundings. "Well, we're obviously not at Hogwarts yet, we've only just crossed the border. Perhaps the tracks damaged?"
At that moment, the power to the carriages failed, plunging the compartment into darkness. "Bloody hell!" Ron swore.
"I'm going to go investigate…" Harry said. Just as he was about to get up though, the compartment door slammed shut, locking itself. Harry tried in vain to get it open, pulling and pushing as hard as he could, but it was no use.
"Harry, there's no use. It's probably magically locked and we can't use magic outside of Hogwarts." Ginny implored, tugging at Harry's shirt.
Complying, Harry sat back down at let out a sigh. "Guess that answers your question Alec, it's gonna be one of those type of years again."
Alec let out a chuckle but was silenced when the train carriage rocked. Everyone held on with bated breath, before they realised the temperature had plummeted significantly. Ron put his hand against the window to clear the condensation but found that it was rapidly icing up. Fear gripped them all and they found themselves without anything to say. Ginny was quick to grab a hold of Harry's arm, and Rose immediately climbed into her brother's lap. Even Hermione found comfort in holding onto Luna's hand. The ice rapidly spread throughout the cabin, until even the glass in the compartment door became impossible to see through.
There was a silence throughout the entire train, luring the group into a false sense of security. That's when it happened, a gruesome silhouette appeared at their door, standing on the outside for a few moments before reaching for the door. Everyone shied away from the entrance, as a bony, shrivelled hand parted the doors. Frozen in fear, nobody could say a word as a cloaked figure swept into the room. It seemed to examine everyone, its faceless head turning from side to side. It felt like a lifetime, but was only a few seconds in truth, as the figure investigated the group. Just as it appeared to be leaving, to zeroed in on Harry, moving closer. Harry was quick to shove Rose off his lap and towards Alec, who caught her and shoved her between Ron and himself.
The cloaked figure slowly drew back its hood, revealing a set of rotting, pale lips on a deathly white face. They seemed to part as it made a motion of drawing breath, even though Harry believed the creature to be dead already. It was as if the life was being sucked out of his body, a darkness began to overtake him as sound began to rush into his ears. He heard Rose screaming, Ron shouting for someone to do something and Hermione panicking. He felt the grip of Ginny around his chest, pulling him into her, trying to help him escape. And then he heard the scream…a scream he had not heard since the dreams of his childhood. It was a scream that he couldn't place a name too, but it was the last thing he heard before the darkness overtook him.
Rose watched in fear as the creature in front of her attacked her brother. She was about to draw her wand when a brilliant blue light filled the compartment. A silvery wolf charged into the back of the figure, sending it flying forwards. The wolf doubled down on its assault and charged the figure again, sending it crashing into the window, smashing it, and sending it flying down the ravine the train had stopped beside. It was as though a sudden weigh had been lifted, and the gloomy feeling of death was gone, as was the cold. The wolf was now long gone, dissolving into a brilliant show of blue light. In its place, was a figure Rose and everyone else was very familiar with.
"Uncle Remus?" Rose half shouted. She sprung forward and wrapped her arms around his middle, "What're you doing here?"
"I can explain that in a second my little Rose petal, first let's check your brother. Is anyone else hurt?" Alec raised his hand and pointed to his nose, the bleeding now stemmed with a handkerchief borrowed from Rose. Remus muttered a quick 'Episkey' with his wand over Alec's nose, eliciting a cry of pain from the boy as his nose set itself again with a crunch. Remus also quickly repaired the window in which the wolf had thrown the figure through, the compartment feeling warmer already. Satisfied that everyone was now okay and the compartment was safe, Remus bent down to examine the now unconscious Harry. He reached into his jacket and took out a large slab of Honeydukes finest chocolate, unwrapping it and waving it underneath Harry's nose. Everyone looked on in apprehension and confusion, before gasping as Harry's eyes flickered open.
He took a second to regain his surroundings, before his eyes fully opened in shock. "Moony? What…that happened? Where am I?"
"You're still on the train Harry…you just had a rather unfortunate run in with one of the Ministry's 'Dementors'. It's gone now, but you should have this chocolate, it'll make you feel better."
Nodding, Harry took the chocolate offered to him and put a sliver into his mouth. Immediately there was a warmth throughout his body and he felt himself lighten. As he regained his senses, he was acutely aware that there were a pair of arms wrapped around his chest, a pair that were steadily shaking. Turning around, Harry saw that the pair of shaking arms belonged to Ginny. Unwrapping himself, he was quick to pull her into his own arms, calming her down. Rose took advantage of the situation and quickly wrapped herself around Harry's other free arm, keeping him firmly trapped between the two Witches.
"So, what're you doing here Uncle Remus?" Harry asked the burning question.
The old marauder smiled as he took a seat opposite. "I suppose there's no use hiding it now. Sirius and I were trying so hard to keep it a secret. I'm going to be your new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher this year."
There was a moment of silence before the entire compartment erupted into a cacophony of sound. Questions began to fly and even more noises of excitement were made. Harry in particular looked incredibly excited, knowing exactly what Remus was capable of as he and Rose had tutored under him throughout the holidays. "That's brilliant Moony! You're easily the most qualified Defence Teacher we've had so far, I know you'll do brilliantly."
Remus blushed and ducked his head but smiled, nonetheless. "Thank you all for your words of encouragement. I'm certainly looking forward to teaching all of you. Now, if you excuse me, I best have a word with the conductor, see if we can keep moving. And Harry, keep eating that chocolate, okay?"
Harry nodded and happily took another bite of the creamy, sweet chocolate. As Remus turned to leave, he had to push through a crowd of spectators that had gathered around the entrance to the groups compartment. It seemed like everyone wanted to know what was going on, and had seen Harry's state. No doubt, the rumour mill of Hogwarts would be at full work already. Once Remus had left, Harry turned to his friends and began to question what had happened after he passed out.
"I think Professor Lupin used a Patronus Charm." Hermione concluded, "That's the only way to properly drive off a Dementor, or so I've read."
"Professor Lupin? Now that just sounds strange." Rose buttoned her nose as the name tasted odd on her tongue.
Harry laughed but agreed fully with his sister. "Um, funny question but…did anyone scream after I passed out?"
"I yelled out, but I didn't really scream." Rose said, "Why?"
Harry sighed as he confirmed his worst fears. "I think I heard mum…just as she died."
Rose gripped her brothers arm even tighter, as Ginny did the same. Everyone seemed to take on a morose look once more as they listened to Harry. "Oh mate…I'm so sorry." Ron extended his sympathies. Harry nodded, accepting the sympathy.
Turning to look at the very silent Ginny, Harry squeezed his hand against hers. "Are you okay Gin?"
Ginny shook her head but said nothing, instead refusing to leave the confines of Harry's arm. Ron looked rather uncomfortable with the scene but still didn't say anything in protest. In reality, Ginny's mind was awash with memories that the Dementors presence brought. Those memories weren't just her own though, there was an influx of memories that Tom Riddle had implanted in her mind throughout her possession. Worst of all though, was remembering the feeling of dread when she saw Harry slowly die in front of her. The nightmares that she had been suffering crashed down upon her like a wave, causing tears to stream down her face.
"I remembered…" She whispered softly, so softly that only Harry could hear her.
Ginny didn't need to say anything else to Harry, as he knew exactly what she meant when she says she remembers. Instead, he pulled her tighter against him and pressed a kiss to her temple. That caused a stir in Ron, who was about to argue before Hermione interrupted him with a withering glare.
"It's going to be alright Gin, you're safe." Harry whispered into Ginny's hair.
She didn't have the heart to tell him that she didn't believe that, instead just focusing on Harry's heartbeat that she could hear through his shirt. It was a reminder that he was still alive and that he hadn't died down in the Chamber. A few moments later, the train once more began to move. Instead of going at the leisurely pace it was before, the train sped up, moving through the countryside with a blur. Obviously, the conductor didn't particularly want to run into Dementors again, either that or Hogwarts had been informed and they were needed there promptly.
Soon after the train had begun to go again, Remus came to check on the group. "The conductor has sped the train up, hopefully to avoid another situation like that again."
"Why did they stop the train in the first place, Professor?" Hermione asked.
Remus looked at Hermione for a second, thinking about the title she just gave him before responding. "It's going to take a while to get use to being called that. I'm assuming that since Harry and Rose were onboard, they were more than likely predicting that Pettigrew would be on here too. Why they targeted Harry…well I don't really have an answer for that, except that Dementors are drawn to sorrow and suffering."
"Well, that's just great." Harry muttered, "Guess I'm like a prime cut of beef to them."
Ron couldn't help but snort, although he earned himself glares from the girls. Harry though, laughed at his reaction. "Hey mate, I wouldn't laugh too hard, you might end up as their side dish."
There was a smattering of awkward laughter from Harry's joke, lightening the mood in the compartment. For the rest of the trip, Remus stayed with the group, discussing what he had planned for the year, including some physical exercise that would hopefully aim to improve the fitness of the classes.
"It came to me while watching you lot play football one day. No offence is meant here, but Ginny and Ron were particularly slow and out of breath for most of the game, compared to Harry and Rose. I suspect that is because unlike muggle schools which have physical education and sport, the wizarding world really only has one sport, that being Qudditch."
"Well, I still feel exhausted after a game." Ron argued.
Remus nodded his understanding. "Quidditch is certainly good for exercising some muscles, but it hardly involves your entire body. You use a broom for most of it, relying on arm muscle to throw and leg muscle to keep your grip. Wizards and Witches lack the stamina of Muggles quite frankly. Some of them can run for miles without stopping."
Hermione at this point was completely latched onto the idea, nodding her head profusely. "That's a brilliant idea Professor, improving our stamina means we can dual longer."
"Exactly right Hermione. I'd give you points but I'm afraid we're not at Hogwarts yet." Remus replied.
The group continued to chatter about certain ideas that Remus had, getting ever more excited over the prospects of having a competent DADA teacher for once. Remus had also made mention of cooperating with Hagrid to secure some 'dark' creatures for them to work with, like Blast-Ended Skrewts, Firecrabs and a Bogart. Finally, the train pulled into the station at Hogsmeade. It was obviously earlier than expected as the sun was just beginning to set on the horizon, beaming through in a rainbow as rain continued to pelt down onto the platform. Students hurried out to find a carriage, sheltering themselves from the rain with any items they could find. In the thick of it all, Hagrid was still there to greet the first years, calling them over. It was difficult to see him through the thick sledge of rain, but Harry thought he could just barely make out an outline towards the end of the platform.
Running as quickly as they could to the carriages, everyone managed to stuff themselves into a carriage, which seemed to magically expand to fit the group inside. As rain continued to pelt down, Harry peered out of the window as they passed through the gates of Hogwarts, shivering as he spied to towering, floating figures of Dementors. Everyone seemed to contract a chill at that point, as they all huddled closer together as if they were deprived of warmth. Finally, as they pulled into the school grounds, a routine was organised by Filch, directing students to get out quickly and head inside before the next carriage pulled up. It took a moment, but Harry and his group managed to get inside, waiting behind the other students to slowly file into the Great Hall.
Unfortunately, the next carriage after there's held a rather mouthy and smarmy looking Malfoy and his cronies. "I heard you fainted on the train, Potter." Malfoy laughed, "From a Dementor!"
"Fuck off Malfoy." Ron cursed, earning himself a shove in the ribs from Hermione.
"Such a potty mouth Weasel, did you faint too?" Malfoy continued to mock the group, before a throw cleared itself behind the Malfoy heir.
"Is there a problem here?" Remus Lupin crossed his arms in front of his body as he examined the scene. Harry had already informed him of the trouble that Lucius Malfoy's spawn would be causing.
"And who exactly are you then hm?" Malfoy stared up at the older man, his nose upturned at the state of dress Remus was in.
Looking down at the student, Remus channelled all his fury into his eyes, the usually pale yellow turning into a bright golden hue. "My name is Professor Lupin, Mr Malfoy, and I suggest that in future you address your teachers in an appropriate manner. 10 points from Slytherin."
Malfoy opened and closed his mouth for several moments as he weighed his options, instead choosing to keep his mouth shut and retreat into his goons. As Remus passed Harry and his friends, he offered them a quick wink before turning to Hermione. "Oh, and Miss Granger, I mustn't forget your excellent answer on the train. 10 points to Gryffindor."
Hermione beamed. "Thank you, Professor Lupin!"
Having earnt 10 points and helped Slytherin lose 10, set the group into a rather good mood. That being said, Ginny was still shaking as she kept herself attached to Harry. There were a few stares and muttered whispers as students commented on the scene, but Harry ignored it completely. He didn't care what others thought at that moment, he was more focused on making sure Ginny was safe.
Just as the group were about to enter the Great Hall, Professor McGonagall came striding across to the group with a rather determined look on her face. "Miss Granger, Mister Potter, could you please join me in my office for a moment."
Harry and Hermione gave each other a concerned look for a moment before the Professor spoke up again. "You're not in any trouble, there are just some matters that need to be discussed."
Nodding, Harry extracted himself from Ginny, who looked rather frightened at the prospect, until Ron came and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. "Come on Ginny, let's find us a seat before the sorting."
Nodding, Ginny followed her brother, but continued to look back towards Harry, watching as he departed. She wasn't the only one either, as Rose was quick to question why her brother was being taken away, until Alec suggested that he's probably going to be checked out by Madam Pomfrey.
The two students followed McGonagall down a series of passages until they arrived outside a thick, oak door. Opening the door, the Professor stepped to the side to allow Harry and Hermione through. Inside, Madam Pomfrey was waiting with a bag of medical supplies.
"Alright, let's have a look at you then Mister Potter. Professor Lupin said you fainted on the train." Pomfrey quickly took Harry in hand and guided him to a seat by the fire, "Can you tell me what happened."
"He was attacked by a Dementor, Poppy." McGonagall said.
There was a noise at the back of Madam Pomfrey's throat as she searched around in her bag. "Honestly, stationing Dementors around a school, what will the ministry think of next? Barbed wire around the windows?"
Harry couldn't help but snort, earning himself a glare from the nurse. "Here, has some chocolate, Potter."
Taking it, Harry didn't refuse another piece of chocolate, but did mention that he'd already had some. "Remus…I mean, Professor Lupin already gave me a block Madam Pomfrey."
"Did he now? I was hoping he'd actually know his profession. He spent enough time in the infirmary with your father and Sirius Black to pick up a few medical practices."
Harry smirked as he realised just how much he ended up in the infirmary, just like his father. "Now, are you feeling better, Potter?" Pomfrey asked.
"Yes, much, thank you. Perhaps though you should check on my sister and Ginny Weasley as well, they were both rather affected by the Dementor." Harry replied.
Madam Pomfrey nodded her head as she packed up her bag. "I shall head down to the Great Hall now and dish out some well needed chocolate, but if they didn't faint, they should be in better condition than yourself."
With one last nod, Madam Pomfrey left McGonagall's office, heading in the direction of the Great Hall. Harry looked at Professor McGonagall expectantly, as if he was going to be dismissed. "One last thing Potter, the Headmaster would like a word with you after the feast, and share a lemon sherbet with you. Now, I just have to finish with Miss Granger here and then I will escort you both to the feast. Could you please wait outside?"
Harry nodded and left the office, leaving a very nervous looking Hermione. A few minutes passed and Hermione came out with Professor McGonagall, looking much happier than when he left her. "Everyone alright Hermione?"
"Absolutely Harry, never better." She replied.
The pair were escorted down to the feast by McGonagall, earning themselves some stares as they walked in. Professor Flitwick was just removing the three-legged stall and sorting hat from the front of the room, meaning they had missed the first year's sorting. Hermione looked rather upset at that, letting out a complaint. The pair hurried down the Gryffindor table where their friends were waiting for them. Rose had made a space next to herself, although moved over so that Harry could sit directly between herself and Ginny, the latter quickly wrapping an arm back around his own.
"So, when are you getting expelled?" Ron joked.
Harry rolled his eyes. "It wasn't anything like that, Madam Pomfrey just wanted to check me out, and I need to meet with Dumbledore after the feast."
The last part brought a round of gossip from everyone as they guessed what he wanted with Harry. Meanwhile, Alec was staring at a point just behind Harry, making a rather rude gesture with his hand that made Harry turn around to find Malfoy mocking him for fainting. "That prick is going to get it one day." Alec Muttered.
"Ignore him, he's just a petty little boy." Hermione said.
"Little boy certainly suits him well." Rose mocked.
The chatter around the table finally ceased as Dumbledore made his presence known, coming up to the podium and raising his hand, asking for silence. Once everyone had calmed down, the headmaster began.
"Thank you all for your attention, and welcome back to another year at Hogwarts! Now, before I begin with our normal notices, I wish to impart on you a serious note that many of you are now aware of."
There was some muttering amongst the houses as talk of the Dementors searching the train was brought up. "As you are well aware by now, Hogwarts are to play host to the Ministry of Magics Dementors, the guards of Azkaban. As many of you have seen, there is a convicted murderer on the loose, and the Ministry has expressed their desire to see the school protected."
Dumbledore let out a sigh and paused briefly as he scanned the room. "None of you are to leave the school grounds unattended or by yourselves. The Dementors will be stationed at every gate and around the school perimeter. I will be frank with you all, Dementors are soulless beings that care not for what petty excuses or pleads you make, they will attack you and drain you of your very soul if you cross foul of their path. So, for your sake, and the sake of your parents and guardians, do not give them a reason to attack you."
Fierce mutterings erupted throughout the hall as students discussed the seriousness of the latest development. Clearing his voice, Dumbledore brought the attention back to himself. "I hope I have made myself clear, that nobody, under any circumstances, should be leaving the castle. No charm, no spell, no tricks or even Invisibility cloaks will fool a Dementor." The last part was most certainly directed at Harry, who shrunk in his seat as Dumbledores gaze passed over him.
"Now, let us move onto other news. You may be aware that there is a new face up here behind me. Thus, I would like to welcome Professor Remus Lupin as our new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. Professor Lupin is an Alumni of the school, and thus has knowledge and understanding of the subject that should aid each and every one of you in your education." There was a rather loud smattering of applause throughout the hall, although Slytherin house was more reserved in their welcoming.
"I also bring a rather melancholy bit of news to you, as Professor Kettleburn is no longer our Care of Magical Creatures Professor. He has decided to retire early, to spend time with his remaining appendages. In his place, we welcome our dearly beloved Professor Rubeus Hagrid as the replacement for Care of Magical Creatures. Please, join me in welcoming him into our teaching staff." The Gryffindors and Hufflepuffs made their pleasure known as they clapped and welcomed Hagrid the hardest. The other two houses kept their applause stilted, but still polite.
"I would also like to remind you that Quidditch try outs are once more taking place for the relevant houses in the coming days, and Mister Filch would like to remind you that magic is not allowed in the corridors, and that a further 19 items have been added to the prohibited list. If you wish to see the full 281 items on said list, please visit Mister Filch in his office. Now, without further ado, please, stuff yourselves full!"
With a flap of his hands, Dumbledore revealed the feast that appeared in front of everyone face. Students and staff alike tucked into the delicious meal with gusto, piling their plates high and enjoying every single bite. It was also a good opportunity for students to catch up and swap holiday tales. Harry moved his gaze over to Remus, noticing that he had chosen to sit next to Snape. The two seemed to be in a discussion, although Snape looked as though he wished he was elsewhere. He recalled that Snape and his father's group, which Remus was part of, where never fond of each other. It puzzled him then, why the pair were sat next to each other. Harry was brought out of his thoughts by a hand on his thigh. Jumping from the movement, Harry calmed once he realised who it belonged to.
"Are you okay Gin?" Harry asked softly.
The youngest Weasley gave a shrug as she tried to eat some mashed potato. "I suppose. Madam Pomfrey gave Rose and I some chocolate, that seemed to help. But…the memories are still there, floating in my head. Nothing is going to stop that."
Harry thought for a moment before he rested his hand in Ginny's. "There must be a way to lock them away…or even remove them."
"Harry it's okay. I just have to live with my demons." Ginny said simply, "Besides, having you by myside helps."
Blushing, Harry squeezed Ginny's hand just that little bit extra. "Come on, lets eat before your brother scoffs it down."
Ginny smiled at the comment, but it didn't quite reach her eyes. For a good hour or so, the feast continued on, with students making room for dessert once the savoury goods were vanished away. Harry even helped himself to some more chocolate, which had been set out in great big platters, presumably for students to stave away the negative mood that Dementors brought.
Once everyone had stuffed themselves full, Dumbledore once more reminded everyone of the new rules before ushering the students to bed. Percy, as Head Boy, was rather pompously strutting about with his new badge, directing first years where to go with the other two Gryffindor Prefects. Just outside the Great Hall, Harry separated himself from his friends, making his way towards Dumbledores office. Once he arrived, he realised that the treat Professor McGonagall had mentioned was quite obviously the passcode.
"Lemon Sherbet." Harry spoke to the stone guardian, who moved aside to let him through. The moving staircase brought Harry to the office door promptly, where Harry found it slightly ajar. He suspected that Dumbledore was expecting him so left it open.
When Harry walked through though, he almost ran straight back out when he heard the headmaster almost yelling at the top of his lungs with a fury he had never heard before.
"Cornelius, I demand that you send those foul beasts away from Hogwarts at once! I shall not have my students being attacked at the very place they should feel safe!"
Peering around the corner, Harry saw that Dumbledore was on his hands and knees, staring into the fireplace where an ember head was speaking to him. "Come now Albus, it was a simple misunderstanding. The Dementors were just being thorough."
"THOROUGH! THEY ALMOST SUCKED THE SOUL OUT OF HARRY POTTER!" Dumbledore yelled, "Perhaps you would have enjoyed explaining that to the public, that the Boy-Who-Lived was now nothing more than a shell of a boy after the Ministers personal shades destroyed his soul."
Harry realised that Dumbledore must've been arguing with the Minister for Magic, Fudge. Harry had certainly never seen the headmaster this angry before, choosing to take a seat by the desk. Fawkes was the first to notice him, letting out a soft trill as he swooped down to take a seat on Harry's leg.
"Hello Fawkes, I've missed you too." Harry gave the Phoenix a soft scratch underneath his chin, "Just don't tell Hedwig about this, okay? She'd gut me."
The Phoenix nodded his head and focused his beady black eyes on Harry, as if to suggest that their secret was safe between them. As Harry scratched Fawkes, he continued to listen to the argument between Wizarding Britain's two most powerful men.
"Dumbledore, I implore you to have patience. Pettigrew will be captured again and then the Dementors can be sent away. They have no reason to attack the students."
"You seem to fail to understand when I tell you that they already have. I warn you now Minister, should there be another attack on a student, I will send the Dementors further out, away from the school boundaries."
Fudge stuttered. "Come now Headmaster, you couldn't possible manage that could you? It's impractical."
"The wards can be changed Cornelius; I suggest that you exercise whatever control you have over the beasts and make them understand that students shall not be harmed. Now, if you excuse me, I have a meeting to attend."
Fudge made to continue the argument but Dumbledore simply ended it by dousing the fire with a stream of water from his wand. Righting himself again, Dumbledore dusted himself off and let out a sigh, turning to face Harry. "I'm sorry you had to hear that Harry, it's not usual for me to express me anger."
"It's okay Professor, I'd be angry too if I was you. In fact, I am angry. They have no right sending those creatures here."
Dumbledore nodded and smiled in agreement as he took a seat in front of Harry, behind his desk. "I see Fawkes has wasted no time at all in extracting payment from you."
Harry gave the bird another scratch, eliciting a trill from him. "I think it's a very small price to pay sir, I don't mind it in the least."
"Excellent, then I shall have to pass him off to you in my will." Dumbledore joked, although Harry didn't quite find it that amusing, "Now, I'm sure you're wondering why I summoned you here."
Harry nodded. "Yes Sir, although I have an inkling of an idea."
"Do tell me then Harry, what do you think we should discuss."
"Is it about what we talked about at my birthday? About the training?" Harry asked.
Dumbledore nodded. "Indeed, you are right lad, I would like to work out times for which you would be happy to meet."
Harry was happy to comply, informing Dumbledore when he had Quidditch practise, and also Hogsmeade Weekends. Together, they worked out a timetable which saw Harry meeting Dumbledore almost every week, on Saturday or Sunday nights. Dumbledore also scheduled a few meetings with Professor McGonagall, including a preliminary meeting for the next night, so that the two may discuss their own schedule. It took about an hour, but finally both Harry and Dumbledore were satisfied with the arrangements, concluding their meeting. As Harry got up to leave, helping Fawkes back onto his perch, Dumbledore approached him with another topic.
"Sometime this school year Harry, we shall meet for another meeting, although in that meeting, we will discuss some more…serious matters."
Harry was intrigued now, looking at Dumbledore with inquisitive eyes. "Like what, Professor?"
"Namely Harry, why Tom Riddle is so fascinated with you."
There was an uneasy feeling in his stomach as Harry nodded his understanding. "I also wish to try and see if you can further communicate with this second voice you heard in the Sorting Hat. To date, no one has ever heard another voice besides the Sorting Hats own, so I would like to investigate."
"I can do that Professor, whenever you want. We could try right now even."
"I appreciate your enthusiasm Harry, but you must be very tired already from such a stressful day, that I believe it would be best you enjoy a pleasant night's sleep instead." Dumbledore smiled as he laid a hand on Harry's shoulder, "There will be plenty of time for us to try our investigation, don't you worry."
Harry nodded, smiling at his mentor. "I understand Sir. If there's nothing else then, I'm going to head back to the Common Room. No doubt everyone will want to hear what I have to say."
Dumbledore let out a chuckle before fishing himself a lemon sherbet out of a jar behind him. "Yes, I have no doubt that Miss Potter will be more than happy to extract the information out of you one way or another."
"Trust me professor, I try, I really do. But she can be fiercely scary sometimes."
"I daresay she gets that aspect from her mother. Lily was known for her anger, just as well known as her caring nature. That being said, most of that anger was directed at your father and Godfather on more than one occasion." Dumbledore chuckled.
Harry gave a sad smile. "It's nice to hear about their time here. It makes it feel real…that they actually existed."
"I do understand what you mean Harry, I too have lost friends and family, but I always remember that no matter what, they are always with you, in your memories and in your heart."
Harry nodded, although he didn't have the heart to tell Dumbledore that he could hardly remember his parents. "Thank you, Professor. I best be off now, shouldn't let the rumour mill wait for material."
"Indeed not, otherwise what else am I going to entertain myself with while I enjoy my morning tea."
Harry laughed at that comment, believing fully that the great Professor Dumbledore was more than happy to indulge in some Hogwarts gossip whilst enjoying tea.
As Harry left his office, Dumbledore sat back down with a heavy sigh, rubbing his temples and stroking his long heard. Fawkes sensed his distress, and swooped down to land on his knee. Looking up, Dumbledore gave his feathery companion a smile. "Oh Fawkes, how do I tell him that he is marked for death? That Voldemort will not stop until either Harry or himself is dead."
Fawkes trilled in response, sending a tingle down Dumbledore's spine. "You're right, Harry is a special boy, more than even I know. I believed it only because of the prophecy, but now I believe that there is something else that is guiding Harry's journey…something out of our control."
As Dumbledore sat in his office and discussed his emotions with Fawkes, unseen forces were pulling strings like marionette dolls, guiding the characters of this story to their goals. Fate had been busy these last few years, pushing and nudging Harry in the right direction, and sending him help when needed. Fate believed that now, on the eve of the great change, Harry would finally show his true potential. There was no doubt in Fate's mind, that the age old battle would come to a end in the coming years, and that Harry would be the centre of it all.
