Author's Note:

Here it is, the final part of our wish maker arc. I hope you enjoyed the action and focus on Max. This will be a turning point for the young boy, of course, he might still be a know it all, but we can't change him overnight. Glad to see so many enjoyed the evolution from last chapter, it was a tough one to decide upon but being a hero to protect those smaller, it seemed fitting. We have the ending sides of the battle, sorry I couldn't fit Ash in the last part but as you saw, it was already a high word count. We also have the long-awaited meeting between Duskull and everyone's favourite psychopath. Don't forget to vote in the poll and with that, let's begin.

Chapter Twenty-Six: Jirachi, Wish Maker P III

Ash ran across the grass, spotting the large muscular man from the Devon Corp siege with a swarm of grunts expanding out. Reaching for his belt, he pulled off three Pokéballs, releasing Donphan, Taillow, Treecko and Kirlia.

"You two," he gestured to the two female Pokémon, "handle the aqua grunts. Hit them hard and fast. You're out numbered, so don't let them build momentum."

With a swift nod of the head, the two took off. Taillow reached their target first, smashing her way through a series of small water types like Tentacool, Corphish and Wingull. While Kirlia followed shortly behind, attacking with a barrage of magical leaves in all directions.

"Donphan!" he grabbed the ground types attention, "double back and help with the magma grunts! You're a better match up with them!"

He gave a short nod and leaped up, curling into a ball. Rolling ahead, he took a wide berth and completely turned around, heading back to the carnival.

"And Treecko, go help protect Max," he instructed.

With a swift nod of the head, he turned on his heel. Zooming across the grassy terrain like a blur.

It didn't take him long to reach the edge of the lake with the Aqua commander stood. A bright smile spread on his face with his arms crossed, "well shrimp, I'll be. Having the same swashbucklers who interfered at Devon wasn't on the plan but how could I pass up this opportunity?!"

Tossing two Pokéballs into the air, he released two Pokémon out into the open. One was easy to recognize, a large Gyarados letting out an ear-bursting roar as it shot out of the water. Snarling nostrils and narrowed angry eyes. Much larger than most that he's seen... even than the one he lost back in Johto.

Whilst the second Pokémon wasn't familiar. It was a large but short Pokémon with a round green head, two large ears on either side, although they lacked any sort of detail. The eyes were black ovals with pure white pupils. With the green colour carrying down onto it's back, which sort of looked like a shell, but not developed. While the bottom of the face and underside was a sea-blue colour. With yellow ridges over the body. The bottom of this Pokémon appeared flat, but some sort of limbs stretched out. He took out his Pokédex to scan the opponent:

Gastrodon, The Sea Slug Pokémon. East-side variant. The final evolved form of Shellos. Unlike most regional variants, this Pokémon's differences seem mostly cosmetic and can appear within the same region. It's believed a change in the water it's hatched in causes these differences.

"Part ground type, huh," he put the device away, turning to the partner on his shoulder, "what do you say, Pikachu. Wanna start this thing?"

"Sure... I could use a challenge," he replied, hopping down. Running forward, he sparked his cheeks in a battle stance.

"So, you've chosen the mouse? I appreciate your guts, kid," the man boomed, "but this won't go like it did at Devon corp."

Pikachu wasted no time in charging forward towards the sea slug Pokémon. Brown bombs of mud fired towards him, exploding over the ground as he zigzagged out of the way, every second getting closer.

Once within reach, the water ground extended their neck out. Swiping at his electric starter, but to no-avail.

He leaped up and spun, coating his tail in metal. Smashing it down on the sea slug heads, he flew over the top.

Spinning forward over a head, a ball of electricity covered him. A massive bolt shot off and struck the water flying type.

Gyarados let out a massive battle cry, shaking his body to throw the thunderbolt off. Swinging his head, he shot out a dark blue flame of dragon type energy.

It struck his electric mouse head on, blasting him back into the ground. Rolling across the floor, he stopped on his back. A massive shadow covered him, and the sea slug Pokémon smashed down on him with a massive body slam.

"Well now that little one is dealt with-"

He stopped in his tracks. Two massive blades of grass sprouted out of the ground, wrapping around the water ground type.

Pulling down on him like some sort of restraints, the ground around surrounding the sea slug cracked. In a massive crash, it caved in.

Pikachu shot out of the ground next to the new hole. Landing right in front of the two Pokémon, with Gyarados looming overhead.

"Gastrodon, get out of that thing by filling it with water," the commander ordered, "Gyarados. Crush that rat."

With a mighty roar, the sea serpent dived down. Dark type energy foaming from his fangs.

Crouching low, his starter waved his tail side to side. It seemed to be the last second that he dodged to the side, leaving their opponent to face plant.

Turning on a heel, he leaped up and landed atop the sea-serpents head. With the water flying type quickly pushing himself straight up, using the momentum to launch his starter into the air. Holding his mouth wide open, ready for a pika-sized snack.

He received a thunderbolt direct into his mouth instead. Falling sideways, smoking, and unconscious.

As Pikachu began to fall, he curled up into a ball. Spinning around, his tail stuck out and glew a bright white.

Different colours flew throughout, tinting the appendage as Ash made a dive to the side. Peeking out, he saw the impact of his tail on Gastrodon's head.

A massive explosion engulfed the sea slug, as a white light blinded the raven-haired boy. Blinking, he heard the deafening silence as he tried to readjust to his senses. His starter landed on the ground in front of him, as the chaos cleared. Revealing Gastrodon in a shallow puddle, unconscious.

With two red light recalling the fallen Pokémon, he glanced to the side to see how the others were getting on. While Kirlia seemed to be alright, for the most part, he noticed Taillow assisting Dustox with a swarm of Wingull, but it was clear, even with Serena's team, they were heavily outnumbered.

"Hey Pikachu, can you go give them a hand?" he asked, "they could definitely use a little power boost."

"I charge by the hour," he muttered, taking off towards the large group of water types.

"I've been counting your Pokémon. Pikachu, Donphan, Taillow, Treecko and Kirlia... that makes five," he informed, "you might've miscounted."

"Or I just know he can handle any Pokémon you throw at us," he smirked.

"We'll see," he sneered, "Tentacruel! Crawdaunt! Get 'em!"

While he easily recognized the jellyfish Pokémon, the other one was new, but held a striking resemblance to his newest caught water type. It had a primarily red shell covering the body, but the underside was a more tanned beige colour. The upper and lower halves of the Pokémon were separated by a pattern of angular red shapes, and there were two blue stripes on the throat. It's forelimbs had two large pincers with spiked edges and tan lower halves. There were two sets of hind limbs, holding it up like legs. The foremost pair were simple claws with two spikes, while the rear pair are large and thick with two white claws on each foot. A yellow triangle marked the base of it's fin tail. While the head had a massive star shape sticking out. He pulled out his Pokédex to scan it:

Crawdaunt, The Rouge Pokémon. The final evolved form of Corphish. Loving to battle, this Pokémon pinches all Pokémon that enter its territory with its pincers and throws them out. Due to the rough and tough lifestyles, these Pokémon usually partner with criminals, such as pirates

"So that's what Corphish might evolve into one day," he mused to himself, switching the device with his final Pokéball, "I choose you, Snorlax!"

In a flash of light, his large normal type materialised in front of him. Thudding down on the ground, flat on his back, creating a small aftershock. While he might've been a little embarrassed by this in the past, it was all a part of his overarching strategy.

"This will be easier than I thought," Matt laughed in his booming voice, "charge in Crawdaunt!"

The water dark type scattered across the ground with his claws glowing black with a purple outline. Reaching his side, he began smacking into the side.

Crawdaunt went unrelenting with the assault on his large normal type. Despite each claw bouncing off, their opponent was undeterred.

Letting out a disgruntled snore, he shook in his sleep. Squirming around, he rolled over onto his side. As he rolled back, continuing his snooze like nothing had happened, the water dark type was revealed in a small creator in the ground... completely flattened.

"You can't even beat Snorlax in his sleep," Ash retorted, "so maybe it's you he miscounted."

The large man hmphed as he recalled the flattened Pokémon, "watch your mouth, kid. Tentacruel, get 'em... and you too Poliwrath!"

With the water poison type leaping up, using the tentacles to jump. He landed directly on his normal types face.

Whilst the tadpole Pokémon jumped onto his stomach. Glowing with fighting type energy, he went straight into some sort of submission attack.

Grunting out in pain, the large Pokémon cried out. Pushing himself up, Poliwrath simply rolled off his stomach, flat onto his own back.

Grabbing the jellyfish Pokémon by the back, he ripped him off his head, leaving red marks around where he was constricting. Despite it attempting to re-attach, he was able to grab the wiggly limbs. Swinging him around, he bashed him into the ground, one side to the other.

After a good half a minute, he held the dazed water poison type up to his eye line. Satisfied, he nodded and simply tossed him away.

Poliwrath wasted no time in charging forward for his own counter. One of his white fists glowing with an orange tint.

It went to deliver a square hit straight to his head, jumping to cover the height but Snorlax had other ideas. Grabbing the hand with his own, he clenched down hard on the tadpole Pokémon, who lost all concentration. Pushing him back down, he struggled to stand against the multi-ton Pokémon.

With a mighty battle cry, he easily lifted his opponent back into the air. Squirming around as he tried to break free from the one-handed trap.

Winding back his free hand, Snorlax delivered a powerful punch straight into his centre. Punching him into the ground, releasing his crushed hand.

Not being one to stop lightly, he continued to punch down on the water fighting type. Each hit planting him further in the tadpole-shaped crater.

After a few more punches, he stopped and smiled at the job. Standing back up, he turned around. His eyes widened and a bright smile overtook his face.

"Hi!" his jolly voice echoed, "did you find the chocolate factory yet?"

"No... No, we didn't Snorlax," he muttered, dropping his head.

"Aww," he groaned.

"Wait... you wake up to a Tentacruel in your face and your first thought is we're in a chocolate factory?" he asked.

"Your right, I was being silly," he nodded, a somewhat solemn look on his face, "so can I see the menu for this all you can eat sushi restaurant?"

Ash fell over.

"We're in a battle," he muttered, "not a sushi restaurant."

"And we're not done yet," Matt's booming voice echoed. He pushed himself up, to see a red light, materialising a Blastoise right in front of him. Part of him panicked, seeing the marble-gem held in a head band, "ah, so you know what that is, kid?"

"It's a mega stone," he sneered, standing back up.

"Clever, but today's your lucky day," he laughed, "we're still searching for the partner stone to make it work. So, we'll need to do this the old-fashioned way!"

"We're not gonna back down!" he declared, "right Snorlax!"

A loud snore followed his exclamation. Small aftershocks followed as he charged forward.

Blastoise wasted no time in aiming his two large cannons. The first one launched out a powerful blast of water.

It stuck his normal type head on but did little to stop his growing momentum. He continued to power through, the shakes increasing with every step.

Not being out done, the second cannon launched out another jet of water.

Connecting straight into his face, his feet scrapped against the ground as he was pushed back. Grunting in anger, he shook his body as the jets ended. He narrowed his eyes with a massive frown. Smashing his arms against his chest, a red outline radiated around him.

Two more jets of water squirted out. Blocking them with his arms, he took off across the ground, not being stopped in the slightest.

Reaching their opponent, he clenched both fists shut. One after another, he delivered powerful blows, knocking the water turtle back bit by bit.

Snorlax might not be the smartest Pokémon out there but his strength more than makes up for it. His strategy rarely goes beyond hit until he wins.

"Get in the water to regroup!" Matt shouted.

The pure water type withdrew into his shell, receiving another punch to the shell. Spinning with the momentum, it shot towards the water.

"You can't get away from Snorlax that easily," Ash smiled.

As if to emphasis the point, his normal type dived into the lake. Swinging his arms around, he took off over the water.

"I was hoping you'd say that," Matt laughed, "believe it or not, this isn't the first swimming Snorlax I've come across."

Looking across the lake, he saw the water slowly start to turn. A massive circle appeared in the water, quickly turning into a whirlpool, with Snorlax in the middle. With a brown shell at the heart. His normal type disappeared under the rapids.

Holding his breath, he continued to look for any sight of large Pokémon. His eyes refusing to blink as every second passed.

After what felt like an eternity, the blue blob leaped out of the water. Smashing directly on top of the brown shell.

Water crashed in from all sides, taking both Pokémon with it. With strong waves still visible on the surface.

Moments later, the two large Pokémon came up out of the water, right next to each other. Snorlax landed two punches in quick succession direct on the water types face. Grabbing the two cannons, he pulled him close and squarely headbutted him in the nose.

Blastoise appeared dazed, unable to stop the large sleeping Pokémon. Who had taken a deep breath, a bright light building in his mouth.

A bright beam of pure normal type energy shot out, striking the water turtle in the chest. Releasing his grip, the hyper beam sent their opponent soaring through the water. His back smashed in the edge of the ground but the beam continued to push him further.

Scrapping across the ground. He continued to roll further away. Only stopping when the shell smashed into one of the fairground rides. A trail of carnage and torn up earth creating the straight line he travelled down from his Snorlax.

Matt frowned, walking straight over to him with his large build adding to his intimidating stance. For the first time, he seemed actually angry, "Why you little-"

"Grw," a loud growl came from behind him.

The aqua command turned around to see Snorlax looming over him, soaking wet. He had swum back to shore whilst Blastoise came to his halt.

Clenching his fist, he delivered a direct punch to the muscular man's face. Knocking him out cold.

"You didn't need to do that, Snorlax," he shook his head at the normal type.

"He made me take a bath and I didn't want to," he stamped his foot with a pout, "I had one only four days ago."

"You did?" Ash asked.

"Venusaur makes me take one once a week," he explained, "he says it's so the other Pokémon don't pick on me."

Unable to comment, an explosion off in the distance drew his attention. It came from the area where Max was running towards, and flames could be seen.

"Well rest up, buddy. I might need your strength in-" he couldn't finish the sentiment as his normal type fell onto his back. Fast asleep.

Taking out his Pokéball, he recalled the sleeping Pokémon. Turning on a heel, he took off over the carnival grounds as fast as he could.

Max fell to his knees as he looked towards the three Pokémon who were quickly dismissed off. Even after the healing, guess they weren't brought back to peak condition. His eyes locked with Lotad as a massive shadow covered them once more.

"Now finish them with hyper beam!" she commanded.

A bright light formed between the ground psychic types arms. His mind went blank as he held his breath.

With a massive gust of wind blowing him back, he rolled along the ground. A tint of red within the blinding white. He scrambled his hands around, as he realised his glasses were no-longer on his face. Feeling the glasses arm, he grabbed them and scattered to put them back on.

As the smoke cleared, he saw a large looming normal type which he easily recognized. It was a particular Snorlax.

"Max! Get over here!" Ash's voice echoed.

Looking towards the source, he saw the raven-haired boy stood to the side. Clutching the wish maker in his arms, he took off towards him, skidding behind. While he took in the sight of the pure normal type. His eyes were bloodshot and narrowed with flaring fangs.

"Wh-what's up with him?" Max stuttered.

"That hyper beam just woke him up," Ash explained, "if there's one way to make a Snorlax angry, it's to wake them up in an abrupt manner."

"Snor!" he cried, slamming his fists against his chest.

A red outline surrounded his body. Charging towards the giant floating Pokémon, a quake followed each step.

The eyes on the ground psychic type glew. A wave of energy shot out, but it did little to stop the raging awoken beast.

Leaping up, he slashed his body onto the clay doll Pokémon. Using one hand to hold on by the black top spike, while repeatedly punching with the next.

"Ice Punch should work better!" Ash called out.

"You're not exactly trying to specific in winning this battle?!" Max cried.

"That's because of Snorlax. When this angry, he wouldn't be able to listen to multiple directions, let alone follow them through," Ash explained, "plus, he isn't exactly a strategic fighter either. I'm just giving him the most straight forward way to win this."

His mouth dropped slightly at the none-chalant response. Glancing back, he saw a cool, pale blue mist cover his fist as he smashed away.

"Hey, what's that in the sky?" Ash asked.

Turning his attention upwards, he saw a couple does stars shining against the clear blue sky... his eyes widened in realisation.

"Jirachi drained some energy from the comet to help heal. He said it would've pulled it off course and down to us," he explained, "it must've broken up as it entered the atmosphere! We're in for a rude awakening when they start landing!"

"I thought that Jirachi drained it of cosmic energy, taking out the danger," Ash replied.

"It's a piece of rock, falling out the sky!" Max cried, "the cosmic energy makes it explosive! But to think it's harmless is stupid!"

"Well, I don't know!" Ash replied.

"I... might not have taken all the energy," Jirachi's mental voice weakly added, "I can only absorb so much at a time. That's why I use a week or more."

"So, what should we do?" Ash asked.

"We need to find cover!" Max replied.

"Explosion!"

A bright light formed from the two large Pokémon. Complete darkness followed with a deafening silence.

Ash tried to blink awake as light returned to his eyes. A sharp pain filled his back as he tried to move into a sitting position. He found himself on a medical stretcher in what appeared to be the magic tent although most of the cover was burnt away.

"Oh, you're up," a voice came from behind. Turning to the side, a strong pain shot straight through his back and side. He realised his chest was on complete show and he had several bandages wrapped around his stomach. His head hurt as the room, started to spin, "whoa. Calm down Ash. You were caught in an explosion. It'll take some time for you to get your bearings."

"Who... who are you?" he asked.

"My name is Doctor Abby Ayane. I specialise in herbal and other natural medicines but came as part of the rescue medical team," she explained. As his vision returned to normal, he found her looking at him. She had medium length turquoise blue hair and a lab coat.

"What happened?" he groaned.

"There was some sort of attack by the criminal organisations known as Aqua and Magma and you were caught in the middle," she explained, "the international police tried to intervene but due to the widespread assault, couldn't contain it in time. But it was pretty brave of you."

"Wh-what was?" he asked.

"From where we found you, it was cleared you shielded the young boy, Max, from the blast," she explained, "his injuries could've been a lot worst otherwise."

"How is he?" he asked, "and our Pokémon?"

"Thanks to you, he only suffered a concussion," she explained, "but as for your Pokémon, the Nurse Joy's are checking them all over."

"So... erm, how long will I be like this?" he asked.

"You have two, possibly three broken ribs and a concussion," she replied, "we're arranging transport for you and your friends to Verdanturf, but you need to rest for the time being. The first couple of weeks are crucial but if you follow these instructions then it typically takes three to six weeks."

"Alright," he replied.

"Now are you feeling up to visitors?" Dr. Abby asked, "Serena, I believe, has been particularly worried about you."

"Y-yeah," he replied, "I'd like to see her."

"I'll go and find her," she smiled.

He wasn't left alone for long but whilst he was, he realised a few things didn't add up. Mainly, what happened to the meteorites? They were under the direct path of the fire rocks so how weren't they struck?

Soon the honey-blonde beauty entered the tent, dragging his attention away. Smiling at her, she made her way over, "how are you feeling?"

"I'm good, thanks," he chuckled lightly, grimacing as a sharp pain shot through his side, "just a little sore."

"Well, I'm glad you're alright," she replied, taking a seat on the stretcher next to him, "I was so worried when I found you and Max in the field."

"Everything after Claydol explosion is just a blank," he replied.

"Maybe I can fill in the gap," she smiled softly, "I just finished battling one of the aqua commanders and turned to see the meteorites in the sky. I tried to reach you and Max, but the explosion took place before I could. Luckily, you, Max and the Pokémon were close enough together that I could put up a psychic shield. That protected us from the meteorites and the G-Men showed up with the international police."

"The G-Men?" he asked, standing up. He almost instantly fell forward onto his knee as Serena followed down, "I-I need to see-"

"Yes... Lance is here, he's running the clear up," she confirmed, "but slow down. Your still injured. And you'll make it worst if not careful."

"But he might have Gyarados with him," he replied, "I need to-"

"He doesn't, Ash," she sighed, "he took my statement himself... and Brock's. I knew that would be your first question, but he said that bringing him into such a situation would be asking for trouble. Gyarados isn't here."

"H-he isn't..." he collapsed down onto his knees, "I-I'm sorry, Serena... I-its just-"

"I get it, Ash," she kneeled beside him. Placing one hand on his shoulder, "had it been Hunter J... then I would do all I could to find her... to know where Furret is. You don't need to apologise for wanting the same thing... but you still have some other Pokémon, remember."

"Yeah... of course," he replied, "can we go and see them?"

"Certainly," she smiled.

She helped him stand up and walk out of the tent. Slowly they made their way across the mostly cleared area, seeing multiple officers and medical staff walking around. He also noticed several grunts from both sides being led away into police vehicles. Soon they entered a small area mostly filled with multiple Chansey's and Nurse Joy's. Arriving by a stretcher where an unfamiliar green Pokémon laid.

Wait... no. He did reconsign it... from before the explosion.

Closing his eyes, he shook his head and reached towards his pocket. However, he realised that he still didn't have his shirt on. Sighing, he turned his head downward, to find a silky-smooth hand holding his Pokédex out.

"I thought you might want this, so I picked it up beforehand," she explained.

"Thank you," he replied, accepting the device. Flipping it open, he held it out over the resting Pokémon:

Grovyle, The Wood Gecko Pokémon. The evolved form of Treecko. This Pokémon adeptly flies from branch to branch in trees. In a forest, no Pokémon can ever hope to catch a fleeing Grovyle however fast they may be because of it's knowledge of the terrain

Type: Grass

Ability: Overgrow

Hidden Ability: Unburden (Note: This hidden ability is currently locked)

Gender: Male

Nature: Brave (Note: This could change when/if this Pokémon evolves)

Move(s): Pound, Leer, Leafage, Bullet Seed, Absorb, Quick Attack, Double Team, Fury Cutter, Mega Drain, Slam, Leaf Blade

"Treecko... evolved," he muttered, closing the device once more. Taking in the pure grass type, he noticed a small twig in his hand. Maybe that should've been the first give away, but he couldn't really .

"Oh, you must be Grovyle's trainer," a voice drew his attention. Turning to the source, he found a Nurse Joy stood with a Chansey beside her, "don't worry, he looks worse than he actually is. Chansey put him into a healing sleep, so he'll need to rest. Should you need to transport then use his Pokéball but try to let him out for as much time as possible."

"How come, Nurse Joy?" Ash asked.

"Because Pokéballs are designed to stabilise a condition. Perfect for safe travels but it's also stabilises the healing process," she explained, "in other words, it puts it on pause. So, by keeping him out, he's allowed to continue the healing process."

"What about my other Pokémon?" he asked, "Pikachu, Donphan, Snorlax, Taillow and Kirlia."

"Ah, yes. With the exception of one of those, they had relatively minor injuries," she explained, "they are currently resting in their Pokéballs. We needed the space... well, Pikachu isn't. He's with the different Pokéballs though. We just couldn't find his anywhere. We thought he might've been wild."

"He doesn't like his Pokéball," he replied, "but what about Snorlax."

"Being so close to the explosion was a cause for concern but, as you may know, his species are very adept at taking hits better than most," she explained, "he too is sleeping and in his Pokéball. I recommend at least eight hours of rest before trying to wake him. And I also say than neither he or Grovyle can partake in a battle or serious training until myself or another Nurse Joy has deemed them fit and ready."

"Would it be alright if I sent Snorlax back to the lab?" he asked, "m-my Pokémon stay at Professor Oak's lab in Pallet town when not with me. I-I just thought he'd get more rest there than on the road... I actually only called him over to help with the battling."

"That would be perfect for him," she smiled, "but Grovyle should stay. His condition is a lot more serious so observation will be needed."

"Of course," he nodded.

Following the normal type nurse over to the stand, he smiled as he found Pikachu, wrapped up in his hoodie with the collection of five Pokéballs with him. With the help from his girlfriend, he sat down and used his Pokédex to send the normal type back to the lab. Neither Duskull or Corphish were available to bring over but honestly, he couldn't think about that right now. Just enjoying the moment, he reached out and scratched his starter behind the ear.

"I sent Kabutops back as well," Serena explained, "exchanged him for Murkrow since his condition wasn't great either."

Silence fell over the couple as he stared down at his sleeping electric type and collection of Pokéballs. With his mind a thousand miles away, he failed to notice someone approaching until their shadow covered them. Looking up, he found none other than Lance stood. A notepad and pen in hand, with his cape blowing in the light breeze. An unreadable expression spread over his face. He squatted down to be closer to their level.

"Sorry to interrupt but I need a statement," he declared, his eyes glancing over to Serena, "and it needs to be done alone."

"Right," she nodded, standing up and walking a little bit away where she joined Brock, May, and Max.

"How are feeling?" he asked.

"I've been better," he replied, "but I'm still in one piece."

"Tell me what happened," he replied, "let's start at the beginning. What was you doing here?"

"Well," he paused, "we were hanging around the carnival. Enjoying the meteor passing. It was a nice break from journeying."

"And today?" he asked.

"After breakfast, I was out on the grass training with some of my team. Even if not travelling, we couldn't slack off," he explained, "Max, May and Brock were there too but I wasn't really paying attention to them. Then we felt a rumble across the ground. At first I thought it was Brock's Steelix or my Donphan."

"It wasn't?" he asked.

"No," he shook his head, "a group of metal trucks were driving down the side of the hill towards us. With the magma emblem on the side. Then Pikachu made a cry and pointed out to the water. Some sort of metal submarine was approaching through the water. This time with the Aqua symbol."

"And?" he encouraged.

"Well, it seemed like Aqua would reach us first. So I took off towards them," he explained, "I sent Donphan to help handle the magma team and sent Treecko to protect Max... but he evolved and is a Grovyle now."

"You sent a grass type towards team magma?" he asked, "rather than keeping him to help handle water type specialists in team Aqua?"

"Erm, well," he stuttered, "it was a split-second decision a-and Grovyle has a sort of hero-complex. He always prioritises protecting others over anything."

"Like trainer like Pokémon," he muttered, "so what happened next."

"Taillow and Kirlia ended up fighting a bunch of grunts as I took on one of the Aqua leaders. I think his name is Matt," he continued, "Pikachu and Snorlax did a good job of overpowering him. I don't think he has much battle experience."

"Go on," he replied.

"S-so Snorlax helped me restrain him," he explained, "and then we saw an explosion off in the distance. Recalling Snorlax because he isn't a very fast runner, I took off over and found Max trying to fight a magma commander."

"Who was this?" he asked.

"I don't know," he held his head down, "female. Twenty maybe. Purple hair. This bit is all a bit of a blur."

"Alright so what did you do?" he asked.

"She had some big... Pokémon. I didn't recognize it, but it was charging a hyper beam," he explained, "I threw Snorlax's Pokéball so he could take the blast and protect the others. It made him angrier than the damage it caused, and he let loose just beating on it... then it exploded."

"According to another witness, the Pokémon was a Claydol," he replied, "and the explosion was likely a cover. Both of the magma commanders made a getaway. Whatever they were after, I doubt they got it."

"How come?" he asked.

"Because the Jirachi your friend has is still here," he replied, "nice try leaving it out of your statement. Why did you do that?"

"If this ended up going to court, then wouldn't I look crazy, saying a super rare legendary was here?" he asked.

"Maybe," he shrugged, "but you shouldn't worry about that. We've got Matt on several jobs before this one and with all the other witnesses, and photos of the wish maker. No such doubt can be brought about it's presence. Leave the trials for me to worry about, alright?"

"Alright," he nodded. The dragon specialist nodded and stood back up, closing his notepad, he started to walk away, "wait Lance."

"Did you want to add to your statement?" he asked.

"N-no," he stuttered, "I just wanted to ask about Gyarados."

"He's doing fine. I don't bring him out onto the field as every move needs precise calculations," he explained, "but we've nearly got his rage under control. He hardly loses control when sparring with Dragonite or my other Pokémon."

"He's sparring?" he asked.

"Well... for my team it's sparring," Lance smiled, "but he is giving it everything."

"So... does that mean he could return soon?" Ash asked.

Lance sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. It seemed to take forever for any other movement, but he soon locked eyes with him and squatted down so they were at the same height again. A cold, pained, dullness covered the G-Man's eyes.

"Look Ash, I know how close you two were," he replied, "but Gyarados isn't the same as you remember him. I've had one of the top neurologists in Kanto examine him and the damage done to his head is irreversible. He'll never remember who you are and what happened before the incident."

"S-so what'll happen to him?" he asked.

"Once I believe his training is complete, I'll look for a suitable trainer to take him on," Lance explained, "I've got my eye on a few already. Water type specialists who either are an elite four position or top gym leaders that could hold those positions."

"Can I know who they are?" he asked.

"They don't even know who they are," he replied, "I haven't approached anyone about this specifically. I'm waiting until Gyarados is ready for the step before any final decisions. I'll also be looking to see how he reacts to each of them."

"So that's a no," he deflated, hanging his head low. The stinging wetness filling his eyes.

"I won't tell you everyone I'm considering but once the move is made," he paused, "and given the trainer, whoever it turns out to be, agrees, then yes, I'll give you, their information. Alright."

"Thank you, Lance," he replied, feeling a tear escape down his cheek, "I... I really miss him."

"I know you do," he smiled softly, standing up, "and if I could change what's happened then I would... but no-one can. I'm sorry."

Sighing in defeat, he could only watch the dragon type specialist stand back up and walk off towards some other officers. Grabbing his Pokéballs off the hoodie, he attached them to his belt. Subtly waking up the electric type up in the process. As his partner crawled out from the jacket, he picked it up, shaking off the loose grass. Grimacing, he stretched to put it on, hurting his sides and back once more. Struggling to his feet, he had to take one step at a time.

Making his way across the mostly barren land, he found Max sat on top of a rock. Absol was next to him with a strong stance, like some sort of guard. While his girlfriend sat between them. The wish maker resting in the young boys arms. As he approached, the dark type growled, showing his fangs.

Serena quickly stood up, stroking his fur, and leading him a little bit away. Allowing him to take a seat next to Max. Where he noticed river of tears streaming down the young boy's cheeks, "what's wrong, Max?"

"I-I... Jirachi said that he won't be able to go with us to Vurdenturf," he sniffled, "their meant to be getting a vehicle to take us soon."

"Jirachi is gonna be with you, your whole life," he replied, causing the young boy to turn towards him, "not just until we leave."

"You know that's not true, Ash," he cried. Using his free hand to try and clear his eyes, steaming up his glasses in the process.

"You see, sometimes friends have to go away but a part of them stays behind with you," he replied, turning his head to the sky. He couldn't help but notice a singular long cloud above, in the shape of a certain sea-serpent, "it's especially true when the friends are best, best, friends."

Peaking to the side, he saw the wish maker stir in their slumber. Slowly blinking awake as the legendries eyeline matched Max's.

"I lost a good friend a while back... before I know it, it'll be an entire year since that day," he continued, "and I miss him every day. But... but I know that regardless of what happened and where he is now... I know we'll always be friends forever."

The young boy couldn't say a word as a fresh wave of tears escaped down his cheeks. Holding the psychic steel type close to him in a tight hug. As he watched he felt a sting of pain in his heart, despite being annoyed from time to time with his friends show of affection... he'd give anything to experience it one more time. After a few moments, Max released his grip and completely dried his eyes.

He could only watch as the young psychic steel type went floating around. It was almost like a fairy dancing through the air, with the cool afternoon blue sky shining behind. The legendary stopped high above them and looked down with a frown.

"Thank you, Max, I really enjoyed playing with you!" Jirachi's voice echoed, "you're a real friend!"

"Wait, Jirachi!" he cried out, leaping up to his feet, "you can't go yet!"

"I must, Max," he replied, "I need to visit Rayquaza. Due to the interruption, the comet broke up with multiple points of impact. They'll want a full report on the incident. I wasn't meant to intervene unless outside forces steered it towards us."

"B-but you had too," Max stuttered, a fresh wave of tears escaping down his cheeks.

"I know Max, but I still need to explain it to them," he replied, "I'll never forget you!"

Without another word, the wish maker shone brightly and with a blinding light it disappeared. A sort of silent, mystic echo spread out over the surrounding area. His tears continued to stream down his cheeks. Taking a step towards him, he saw Brock approaching from another direction. Leaving his big brother figure to handle the delicate moment, he walked across the barren field.

Spotting his girlfriend, she was stood at the edge of the once fairground. By her side was the disaster Pokémon. Making his way towards them, he was surprised when the dark type took off away from them. Quickly leaping away, disappearing from sight. He stopped just beside her.

"Part of me thought you was going to catch Absol," Ash mused.

"I asked if he wanted to," Serena admitted, "but he declined. I guess he's off to protect others from impending disasters."

"Do you know why he seemed to hate me?" he asked, "I mean... he'd become tense and get ready to attack whenever I'd get close."

"I don't know for sure," she replied, lightly resting her arms on his shoulders, "but if I had to guess. Maybe it's something to do with you being a danger magnet. It doesn't really matter one way or another."

"I guess not," he sighed, "but who knows. We might run into Absol later down the road."

"Anything is possible," she smiled, "but come on. The transport is almost ready. We should make sure we've got everything."

Nodding in agreement, he followed her lead back towards the camp.

Misty stood behind one of the tents as she saw the police vehicle pull off. She knew it held her friends, taking them off towards Vurdenturf town. Sighing, she relaxed in place. The chances that they'd reconsign and blow her cover finally over.

Smiling. She had to admit the danger of being discovered during the operation was kind of exciting.

"If you're trying to remain hidden, then you need to find better cover," a male voice appeared behind her. Feeling the hair on the back of her neck stand up, she turned to find her handler for this mission, with his Dragonite beside him, "update?"

"For the grunts which got away from the siege, we were given coordinates to regroup at," she explained, "I believe some sort of extraction is planned for us."

"Neither of the commanders have said anything, or even asked for their phone call," he sighed, "I need you to take a more active role from here."

"What do you mean?" she asked.

"With both the leader's left and right hand out of commission, he'll be looking for the next gen to step up," he explained, "use this opportunity to raise your rank. Take control of the evac from your end and show leadership qualities. It's part of why I picked you for this mission."

"How do you know I have these qualities?" she asked.

"Because it's the same qualities that we look for in gym leaders," he replied, "strong, tough. Able to delicate among a team and take control regardless of the situation, whilst remaining calm. But I do have some concerns about what happened today."

"We were forced to move earlier because of magma," she explained, "I tried to send a warning, but it was too late."

"I understand that," he assured, "but I was more referring to what happened with the girl travelling with your old companions. I'm struggling to find another word other than jealousy."

"I wasn't jealous," she replied, "I was trying to keep her safe."

"That's a weird way of showing it," he replied.

"I couldn't blow my cover, but I knew if I was battling her then the grunts on both sides would leave us," she replied, "that's why I challenged her."

"And the damage caused to her team?" he asked.

"It looked worst than it was, and I needed it too look good," she shrugged, "had I taken it easy then my cover could've been blown."

"How so?" he asked.

"At Devon Corp, I easily gave up to the little kid and Ash's grass type remember," she explained, "had I thrown the fight to May, and she told them then they'd know there's a female aqua member. Who uses water types. And has orange hair. And is kind... how long would it take them to figure it out."

"No need to be over dramatic," he replied, sighed, he turned his back, "do you know why I picked you for this task?"

"I could make a million and one guesses but no," she replied, "care to share?"

"Well... I needed someone good with water types, whose age is close to yours due to the recruitment tactics Aqua has been using. I normally don't even consider undercover operations but with two of these teams running about, I needed information quickly," he explained, "but I picked you because not only did you fulfil these requirements and with a gym promised to you, I knew you could be trusted to protect yourself, but-"

"But what?" she asked.

"But it was your relationship with Ash that convinced me," he continued, "you see, I knew his father. We were trainers together and rivals throughout. He always had a habit of running into trouble. Never seeking it out but when he found it, he'd charge in like a herd of Tauros. No plan or information. It would be admirable if it wasn't so stupid... and one look at Ash, I know he's exactly the same. So, you can imagine my thoughts when I learnt he was in Hoenn."

"What does this have to do with-"

"So, I picked you because, if he charges in and gets stuck then I'll have someone on the inside ready to help pull him out," he cut her off, "I owe Red Ketchum many things, my own life on more than one occasion. Taking Gyarados from him was my lowest point in my career with the G-Men because I knew he wouldn't hurt his Pokémon like some. I've seen trainers that I know are guilty walk free but... that is why I picked you. I knew it would have to be someone that he trusts."

She could only stare at the dragon type specialist. Never would she had guessed he harboured such hard feelings over the lake of rage incident. While she knew he was respectable due to both his role in the league and the international police but... he looks like the definition of honour right now.

"I-I should get back before I'm missed," she muttered.

"Do," he replied, "and keep safe. This opportunity with two commanders behind bars could be your chance to get closer to the main target but it'll also be a lot harder to remain hidden. Remember your own safety must come first."

With a swift nod of the head, she took off over the field. Aiming for the forest to disappear into.

Ash sighed as he stood outside on an empty battlefield. The cool night sky blew past him. The fuzzy little yellow partner resting on his shoulder. They arrived at Vurdenturf a few hours back, with Grovyle going straight into the recovery ward. They booked rooms for the next few nights and really just tried to recover from this whole event. The town is pretty small, but peaceful... almost reminiscent of Pallet Town.

A buzzing in his hand drew his attention. Looking down, he saw the screen of his Pokegear with his dad's image popping up. Sighing, he hit the accept button and the screen turned to the image of his father, "hey dad."

"Hey," he replied, "wanna tell me what's going on over there?"

"... how do you always know?" he asked.

"He sensed a great disturbance in the force," Pikachu quipped.

"Not now buddy," he shook his head.

"Actually, Pikachu isn't far off," Red interjected, "aura is the thing that connects all living things. When you or your brother are in danger, I'm able to sense it through your aura's reactions. That's how I always seem to know when you're distressed."

"So, you can tell whenever anyone is having a bad day?" he asked.

"Not quiet," he shook his head, "that sort of burden would drive even the strongest of person mad. So, no aura guardian can feel everyone's feelings at the same time. I can home in on an individual at a particular moment if I know where they are. The closer I am, physically, the stronger the feelings I'll be able to sense but because you're my son. Regardless of how far apart we are, I'll always be able to feel when something is wrong. So wanna tell me about it?"

"We were visiting a carnival... and met a legendary..." he explained, "Jirachi."

"Ah, the young wish maker," Red smiled, "that is actually one of the few Pokémon I've yet to meet myself."

"Well... there's two groups in Hoenn. Just like Team Rocket," he continued, "Aqua and magma. And they came for the wish maker."

"I've heard about them, but I wouldn't be so quick to judge," he replied, "Team rocket were criminal thugs, motivated by money and power. With an egotistical narcissist leading the way. Neither of the teams, from what I've heard resemble that sort of profile."

"What difference does it make?" he asked, "they're all criminals."

"It makes all the difference. I know you're going to continue encountering them and fighting them regardless of what I say," his dad replied, "but you need to remember this, how can you hope to stop, what you don't understand?"

"You think I should try to understand them?" he asked.

"It was once said," Red continued, "a wise man gets more use from his enemies than a fool from his friends."

"When did you get so philosophical?" he asked.

"I may not be the smartest when it comes to most subject matters," he replied, "but profiling and finding criminals is kind of my speciality. So, tell me what else is up with you."

"I... erm, got caught in an explosion. A move by some Pokémon, not a weapon," he explained, "but it cracked a couple ribs. It really kills."

"Consider yourself lucky. Pokémon explosions don't use shrapnel," Red smiled, "had it been a weapon then your injuries would be much worst. But if you want to heal those ribs quicker than you need to stop fighting your aura."

"What?" his eyes burst open, "I-I can't. Every time I use it, bad things happen."

"I know your scared, but you need to understand. It won't be long before your teacher Riolu shows up," he replied, "the harder you fight it now, the longer it'll take you to master it when the time comes. If you stop resisting, the aura shall heal your injuries. In the morning, you'll be as good as new."

"I thought I'd need training to use it's medical practises," he mumbled.

"To use it to heal others, you would but as it's primary directive is to keep you safe," Red explained, "if you embrace it's power, it'll work whilst you sleep."

"But-"

"I can't make you embrace the power Ash," he cut him off, "but know I know why you're scared. My aura woke up long before yours did and... it did a lot worst as well. You're really thinking what might happen, won't change anything. Only action will."

"I'll think about it, dad," he muttered, quickly hitting the cancel button. Sighing, he stared at the blank scene, seeing his own reflection.

Ash put the phone away and made his way back into centre. Making his way through the building, he didn't really pay attention to the few people scattered around as he made his way towards his room. Stopping at the door, he reached for the handle. Pausing, he used his free hand to knock. He waited a couple more seconds before pushing his way in.

After a close call, when she walked in whilst he was changing. Luckily, he still had certain clothing items on at the time. They made a special knock so if not decent, they have chance to make it into the attached bathroom. Pushing his way in, he watched Pikachu run forward, onto a chair when Sylveon lay.

He made his way towards the bed and sat down. Serena was already in her nightwear, lying on her stomach looking ahead. He followed her gaze and found the television was on. It appeared to be a rerun of the showcase. A line of three girls stood with different Pokémon accompanying them. One of them had a Golduck but the other two he could reconsign. One was Lisia, who had the Altaria with her again. A light shot down over the turquoise haired teen.

"And ze winner of today's Verdanturf town Pokémon showcase is... the superstar from the contest circuit! Lisia Lutia from Sootopolis City!" the host declared.

"Hey Serena, isn't that girl on the left the one we met in the orange islands?" he asked.

"Yeah, Shauna is competing in showcases as well," she replied, "I wonder if we'll run into her at any point."

"I wonder if she still travels with those other guys," he mused, "erm... what were their names again?"

"Trevor and Tierno, silly," she giggled, pushing herself up. He leaned in and pecked her lips a couple times, "so what's got into your head."

"How did-" he paused, "never mind. Stupid question."

"I didn't use my ESP to read your mind," she pointed out, "but I wouldn't be a good girlfriend if I couldn't see something was bothering you. And I know it wasn't anything from earlier because you weren't this... brooding on the ride here."

"I spoke to my dad," he sighed, "and he wants me to use my aura. Let it heal my ribs."

"Maybe he has a point," she reached over and slowly massaged his shoulder. Feeling him tense up, she made sure to be gentle, "I mean... we won't be able to cuddle whilst your sore... and starting slow could make you more comfortable using them."

"Why are you taking his side?" he asked.

She held her hand out towards the desk where a couple clean glasses sat. A light outline of psychic energy surrounded the object and it floated across the room. The bathroom door opened, and the glass floated inside. With the tap turning on, it filled up with water. As it made its way back into the main room, both the tap turned off and the door closed behind it. Landing directly in Serena's hand.

"Because it's very convenient and could make things so much easier," she replied, pecking his cheek, "like healing up quicker."

Looking down at the floor, he realised that she might be right. At least it's better to try and get use to these abilities whilst in the safe enviorment and without any sort of threat for it to lock onto... taking a deep breath, he felt a familiar tingle run through his veins.

Corphish scattered across the ground looking at the expansive ranch ahead. Taking a deep breath of the fresh hillside air. It wasn't nearly as warm as he likes it but it's a pleasant day. It was too late last night when Ash exchanged him, so he never really got to check out the place... but he has heard of this place.

As he reached the top of a small hill, he took in the sight. A large forest was near the back. With a singular hill between his position and there, as some sort of small brown Pokémon was slashing the rock. While to the right side was some sort of large dirt field, several large Pokémon were present, all locked in some sort of combat. While to the left side were two lakes, one much larger than the other with several water Pokémon scattered around.

Making his way towards the water source, his mind filled with thoughts of the different babes he could meet. He remembered hearing Serena had a Kingdra and Dewgong here... he'll be sure to introduce himself and-

"Boo!"

He stopped in place as Duskull materialised in front of him. A stupid wide grin under his mask.

"Hahahaha, you should've seen your face," he laughed, "ooh. Anyway, what are you doing here?"

"Ash sent me because Serena convinced him to bring one of the big guns," he replied, "I think he said it was Snorlax or whoever."

"Cool," he replied, "cool, cool, cool, cool. So..."

"So what?" he asked.

"Are you excited about the thing?" Duskull asked.

"What thing?" he asked

"Mister Venusaur said that roughly once a week, Gengar puts on a big musical show performance thing," he replied, "and todays the day!"

"So, you like musicals, aye?" he asked, with a suggestive smirk, "to each their own. I can't say I'm against the concept."

"Well, I'm more excited to meet mistress Gengar!" he exclaimed, "she's the only other ghost type between Ash and Serena!"

"Ah, so you hoping she'll take you to the shadow realm. If you know what I'm saying," Corphish replied.

"N-no-"

The sound of some sort of drums cut the young, blushing ghost off. Turning towards the source, they found a small group of Pokémon leading a march towards them. The first being that Venusaur guy who appeared to be using his vines against some sort of big blue turtle Pokémon, creating the music.

While leading the charge was a purple plum ghost. With Granbull and some blue Pokémon close by. All three spinning big combat sticks.

"Let's get down to grinding," she sang, swinging her large stick around in an admittedly cool style, "to defeat... our foes."

Pulling two more sticks out of no-where, she tossed them over towards them. Each of them caught the weapon with ease. As he inspected his, he shrugged not sure what use he'd have. Didn't stop him from bonking the pure ghost type on the head with it, though.

"Did they send me Taillow? When I need, Ho-oh's!"

He couldn't help but inwardly smirk at the joke. Had the flock leader been here, she'd put this show-mon in her place for sure.

"You're the weakest team I've levelled up!" she spun through the air, landing right in front of them, "and since I haven't caught Mewtwo... Mister I'll, make a mon, Outta you!"

With a click of her fingers, their entire location changed to the middle of some woods. Although the beat of the music could still be heard.

"Granbull's in the forest! EXP, we crave!"

A series of red eyes surrounded them. Without a moment's notice, a series of giant yellow and black bugs shot out. With another click of her fingers, the location changed once more. This time in front of a traditional Pokémon centre, although they were all covered in bandages and plasters.

"Once we find the centre, we'll be sure to save!"

Granbull fell over, with excellent comedic timing. With another click, they appeared on the edge of a cliff. Well, Gengar was, stood with a bucket on her head and the stick, spinning it around, giving the gesture for us to go to her. Looking around, he found a bucket of Pokéballs. Picking them up, he tossed the devices towards her. She somehow spun the stick, deflecting each Pokémon, whilst balancing the bucket.

"We could use candies, so we'd stand a chance, but we've only got a few."

Duskull somehow ended up in Gengar's spot, bucket, and all. Shrugged, he wasted no time in throwing the Pokéballs once more. Despite trying, the ghost type missed all but one, with the bucket covering his head. The one he did hit came back and hit the blue guy, recalling him inside.

"Somehow, I'll, Make a mon, Outta You!"

They appeared in front of a large, yellow, Pokémon. Who seemed perplexed at their arrival?

"How does she learn Dragon pulse?" Corphish found himself asking, reading a lyric sheet on the ground.

"She's just Amphy!" the previously recalled blue guy replied.

"Boy that Tentacool's whirlpool is sure to win!" Granbull sang, who was tied up by one of the jellyfish. Being dragged over the floor like a weird dance.

They appeared in some sort of gym, right on the battlefield with a pinked haired women across from them. A large pink round Pokémon with udders charging forward. Duskull was the actual one on the field, and it looked like some sort of cartoon as he tried to outrun the opponent.

"We're gonna get rolled out to death!" Duskull more screamed than sang, "hope she won't sweep right through me!"

A bright flash blinded him for a split second and found himself in some sort of dojo. With the blue guy middle of the floor, surrounded by rocks and spikes.

"Now I really wish that I knew Rapid Spin!" he sang.

Gengar appeared once more. Microphone in hand with a weird assortment of Pokémon on a choir stand.

(Pokémon)

"You must use swift on a double teamer!" Cue the scene of them throwing stars at trees.

(Pokémon)

"With all the force of the great Suicune!" Cue a chalk board with some sort of large beast drawing and Gengar pointing with

(Pokémon)

"With all the strength of Electivire!" Cue an old video recording on a portable small screen of a certain Pikachu being drained by a large yellow Pokémon, being frown across the field, "mysterious like the dark caves of mount moon!"

After another flash, they found themselves in some sort of weird room with arrows on the floor. Stepping on one, he went spinning in that direction.

"Rocket hideout puzzles, That we need, To solve!" Gengar continued, seeming to focus on Duskull, "heed my every order, And you might, Evolve!"

He came to a stop as he crashed into the blue guy. Dazed, he shook his head to find the purple ghost floating over him.

"Your unsuited for, HM-O Four, So pack up, Go in box two!" she pointed to the left, where a cardboard box sat, "how could I, Make a mon, Outta you?!"

"(Pokémon)

"You must use swift on a double teamer!" Cue the same scene but with more of the fake stars landing.

(Pokémon)

"With all the force of the great Suicune!" Cue the same classroom chalk board.

(Pokémon)

"With all the strength of Electivire! Mysterious like the dark caves of mount moon!" Cue the same videoed battle.

(Pokémon)

"We must use swift on a double teamer!" This time he was able to shoot stars out of his actual claws.

(Pokémon)

"With all the force of the great Suicune!"

(Pokémon)

"With all the strength of Electivire! Mysterious like the dark caves of mount moon!"

The music faded and slowly all the other Pokémon involved walked off. He looked around and found himself on top of the same hill that they started on with the same ghost floating next to him.

"How come Ash's training sessions are never like that?" Duskull asked.

"I tried to teach the young boy my ways but alas, he couldn't hack it," Gengar declared, popping up between them, "oh and, I know you aren't supposed to learn swift before you evolved Sebastian... I mean Corphish, but I break the fourth wall all the time. The readers won't get mad if I break a few game mechanics too... they love me. Any who, hoped you like the musical number. No movie arc is complete without one."

He blinked... twice... unsure what to say.
