Author's Note:
Here it is, the third contest in Hoenn and the chance for May to redeem herself after her defeat to Harley. We also get to see a familiar rival and a new one. I'd like to take this time to say, one character I won't be bringing over from the anime is Robert. His team I've splintered into Lisia, but a master coordinator isn't a role I need fulfilling and he'll just be redundant. The rival introduced was a one-time opponent for Ash, but I always thought they worked better as a coordinator. They have a theme with music and so to all musicians out there, I'm sorry if I've used the terms wrong. I wanted to add to his character and emphasis this point (similar to photographers in the show like Todd or Viola). I've also tried to delve further into the effects of Harley in her previous contest, so hope you like it. I couldn't find a better place to put this little bit of trivia, so I'll do it here (because a side character from the episode I'll mention makes a cameo here) but when watching the advance series, I always thought Brock should've caught the heart break pattern Spinda in the episode, going for a Spinda. With how much he interacted with it, that seemed to be direction he was going. I wanted so badly to give him it in Hoenn but ultimately decided against it for three reasons, 1) his character arc has seen him overcome the flirtatious side of him in this series, 2) I also really wanted to use the Slaking line and he ended up being the recipient for it, 3) other than that Pokémon, the chapter would've been filler, for a gimmick Pokémon. In case you didn't notice, the only Pokémon I tend to give their own intro chapters to are those with prominent character arcs (at least as of late Johto), Delibird was a gimmick Mon but tagged into lake of rage. Mantyke and Poliwrath, Pokémon hero's and Celebi arc respectively. It was just a little detail I felt I should pass on. Not much else to say, don't forget to vote in the poll and with that, let's begin...
Chapter Thirty-Three: Fallarbor Contest: Musical Clarks
May sighed. Using a hand to cover her eyes, she looked up to the sky. Black pieces of ash floated down all around them. It was sort of like snow but black and not cold. Looking ahead she saw her little brother running through piles of the debris with Vigoroth.
"Why is this ash everywhere?" she asked.
"Pikapi!" the electric type pipped up from his trainer's shoulder.
"Not funny," Ash grumbled, crossing his arms in defiance. While Serena covered her lips, letting out a small giggle.
"What did he say?" she asked.
"He said that Ash is finally among his own kind," she explained, "but... you know. In his usual sarcastic delivery."
"Still doesn't explain why it's raining ash constantly," Ash grumbled.
"It's because we're right behind mount chimney," Brock explained, "it last erupted around three hundred years ago, according to the guidebook. And it left behind a creator full of ash within. Strong wind currents blow through the mountain, and this is where it spreads out."
Nodding in understanding, she shook her head and knocked the few bits of ash off her head. Turning forward, she saw Brock's pure normal type pick Max up with a fireman's lift and jump up a tree. Leaping upwards, he jumped off. Her little brother laughed loudly; his glasses were messed up on his face as he struggled to breath. Wheezing whilst being put back down, crippling over he leaned against his own legs.
Part of her wondered what would've happened had she taken her dad's off way back when she first started. Would he have evolved by this point? Would he be this close to her brother? Maybe she'd have another strong battler to keep Combusken in line? Who knows?
"It really seems like Vigoroth likes Max," Serena smiled, "it's kinda sweet."
"You mean like you and Beedrill?" Ash asked, "or Kabutops... or even Alakazam."
"Oh, is my big strong boyfriend jealous?" she teased, wrapping herself around one of his arms, "don't worry, you've got Meganium still."
Seeing the flirtatious banter between the couple, she sighed in defeat. Refocusing ahead she saw the two front runners stood on the top of the hill. As they reached them, she took in the site ahead. The orange cracked ground had a few weeds sticking out. While the town was... unimpressive. A few buildings scattered the area, but all were pretty bland in design. Not to mention, she could easily see the other route on the other side. By far the smallest town they've visited. Looking around, she noticed the others heading down the hill. Sighing, she followed suit.
"Why would they build a contest hall here?" she asked.
"Probably to help bring attention here," Serena suggested, "they don't just focus on big cities, ya know."
"Hey," Max called out, "it looks like some sort of battle is going on."
Turning towards the direction her little brother was pointing; she was surprised to see a large crowd. She was certain there were far more people here than what actually lived in the back-washed town.
"Now Plusle, move in!" a strangely familiar voice commanded.
"It's a rare enough thing. A coordinator who lives up to his reputation," another male voice commended, "but now's time for our final verse. Let's give our audience a taste of what's to come. Crescendo flame wheel, my dear Quilava."
Pushing her way through, she found a clear circle, lining out the battlefield. A small Pokémon similar to her Minun but with red instead of blue, ran forward.
Their opponent, a long slim dark blue flaming Pokémon. Leaped up into the air, a circle of flames engulfed them as it went rolling towards Plusle.
She glanced towards the first trainer. A young man dressed in a pure white tuxedo. He had a light indigo lining, along with a long scarf around his neck. His hair was medium length and dark blue, neatly combed to the side. While a small pair of glasses covered his eyes. His opponent... was Drew?!
As the fire type sped across the ground, a trail of flames stuck behind. They circled around the field, creating a wall of fire around the electric type.
Continuing to speed around the base, the fire stretched upwards. Some light sparks of electricity shot out of the top, along with the echoing cry of Plusle.
"Cadence with lava plume!" he instructed, waving a sort of stick with his hand.
Her eyes widened as she saw the orange-red flame spew out of the top. Creating a visual of a literal volcano erupting. A small object flew out of the overflowing flames as she stepped back with the crowd. Plusle landed flat on his back, charred, and covered in soot, head to toe.
The flaming display died down, revealing a scorched ground around them. While Quilava stood tall against them, disappearing in a red light.
Looking towards the other boy, he gave a small bow, sticking the small wand he had into his belt. Turning around, he walked away with a large portion of the crowd surrounding him. She stood still, turning her attention to her rival. He was kneeled over his fallen Pokémon, cradling him in his arms. She pulled out her Pokédex:
Plusle, The Cheering Pokémon. Plusle always acts as a cheerleader for its partners. Whenever a teammate puts out a good effort in battle, this Pokémon shorts out its body to create the crackling noises of sparks to show its joy. It's believed to have a genetic relation to Minun
Putting the device away, she walked over as Drew stood back up. A red light flashed off her belt and one of her team materialised by her side, "Minun?"
"Mi Minun," she nodded, scurrying up her body, perching on her shoulder.
She leaned over to look at her fellow cheering Pokémon. Rubbing her hands together, a bright outline covered her body as she vibrated with energy, although no electricity was present. Forming a white ball in her hands, she pushed it down into the collapsed Pokémon.
Plusle squirmed in Drew's arms, slowly blinking awake as he shook to remove some of the soot. The green haired boy smiled and turned towards her, "helping hand. Thank you."
"You're welcome," she smiled, reaching up to scratch Minun on the head, "but it's really Minun who deserves the thanks. Will Plusle be alright?"
"He should be," he nodded, "after a visit to nurse Joy, at least."
"That's good," she nodded, "who was that guy?"
"Clark the conductor," Drew sighed, turning to look at the ground, "he's one of the favourites to win this year's grand festival. He's the reason I'm even here in Fallarbor."
"You mean you're not here for the contest?" she asked.
"I am, but not to compete," he explained, "I've already made it up to four ribbons. I've got plenty of time to get my final one so for now I'm focusing on building my team and learning what I can about my competition."
"It says here that Clark is known as the conductor because of the way he commands his Pokémon is similar to a musical conductor," Serena explained, as she approached them, reading her Pokegear screen, "and last year he made it to the final of Hoenn's grand festival only to lose against Lisia."
"Right," Drew turned his head upwards, "Hoenn's superstar. It was one of the best matches in Hoenn contest history. Most viewed in the associations history."
May turned her head towards the small electric type on her shoulder. Narrowing slightly, her eyebrows pulled together, with a slight wetness building up in them. The corners of her lips flicked downwards, tensing up as she studied the wide, questioning eyes of her cheering Pokémon.
"What's the matter, May?" Serena asked.
"I... think we'll be best to skip this one and just keep going," she mumbled, "I doubt we could beat Clark."
"Your right," Drew mentioned, "the moment he decided to compete. The winner was already decided. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to get Plusle to the centre."
She watched the green haired boy walk away with his electric type still in his arms. Letting out a breath she didn't know she was holding, she slouched in place as a single tear escaped down her cheek. Reaching up, she wiped it away. A fuzzy feeling tickled her cheek, as her cheering Pokémon nuzzled her.
"I don't think Minun wants to skip," Serena smiled, "and I'm sure Mawile wouldn't want too either."
"But what hope do we have against someone like Clark?" she asked.
"Back in Johto, when I was competing, I ended up facing a strong coordinator named Solidad," she explained, "she ended up beating me in the final contest, but I still learnt a lot from the battle. You can't just compete if you think you'll win. You learn so much more in losses."
"And besides," Brock's voice echoed in as the boys approached, "no battle is set in stone. I'd bet money on that volcano display being a part of his plan."
"How does that help me?" May asked.
"Because it's similar to another display we've seen," Ash smiled, giving a small nod towards his girlfriend, "specifically, one which Serena used."
"Right!" Serena exclaimed, her eyes widening with her smile, "back with Delphox! Come on May!"
"Where are we going?" she asked.
"To the Pokémon centre," she smiled, "after registering and booking our rooms for the stay, we've got some special training to do."
Shaking her head, she couldn't stop the smile growing on her face. She watched the honey-blonde girl run ahead, filled with energy. It sorts of reminded her of Ash on his way to a gym. Hearing her electric type cheer from her shoulder, she took off after her, with the boys following in tow.
Serena pushed through the doors and ran up to the front desk where Nurse Joy stood, typing on her computer. Glancing around, she noticed the lobby filled with different people and Pokémon. No spare seats were left, as most of the visitors were stood around. She stopped just at the reception.
"Hello and welcome to the Fallarbor Pokémon centre," Nurse Joy smiled, "how can I help you today?"
"Hello Nurse Joy," she smiled, feeling the presence of her friends approaching from behind, "we'd like to book three rooms please."
"Oh, I'm sorry but we're completely out of rooms at the moment," she apologised with the ghost-town of a smile over her lips, "and I'm afraid even the local inn has been completely filled. A lot of the trainer's here are having to camp out around town."
"Does that mean I can't register for the contest either?" May asked.
"Actually, you can," she nodded, brightening her expression, "despite the large gathering, we've only got a handful competing. It was thought they might cancel it had our numbers not improved."
She smiled as the young coordinator handed over her contest pass, seeing the nurse enter her into the competition. After receiving the pass back, they thanked her and walked back towards the boys, who stood against the wall next to the doors. They stopped just close by to them.
"Sorry guys but we're going to need to keep camping," she explained, "there's no rooms left."
"That's alright," Ash shrugged, "we can still stock up on supplies. So, it's not a big deal. Why don't me and Max go and set up a site in an open space."
"And I'll go shopping," Brock smiled, "I'm sure one of the Pokémon can hold base when you come back to get us."
"May and I will stay here and practise for tomorrow," Serena added, "we can all meet back up here when its dinner time."
"Sounds like a plan," Ash smiled, "we'll catch you guys later."
Walking out of the building together, the chocolate-eyed boy pecked her cheek before heading off with the young boy, Vigoroth carrying Max. Whilst Brock set off in the other direction. Trapinch riding on his shoulder as Lombre materialised by his side. Taking a deep breath, she led the young girl around the back of the building where a battlefield sat. Surprisingly, there wasn't another person in sight despite the number of people inside.
"Alright May, so we're going to work on your battling," she explained, "and don't worry about experience. Contest battles are just as much about intuition and the situation in the moment. You've got every chance to win tomorrow."
"She is correct," a male voice appeared. Turning back towards the centre, she saw Clark from earlier leaning against the wall. Beside him stood a Numel, who looked up at her with half-closed eyes and a calm expression. The blue haired boy offered a kind smile as both walked towards them. Taking her hand in his, he gently lifted it up and place a quick kiss before releasing it. Glancing to the side, she saw May roll her eyes at the gesture, "it's an honour to meet you."
"Thank you," she nodded, "but if you don't mind, we were going to do some training."
"Of course," he smiled, turning to face May, "and if I may, dear, you should listen to her advice. I've seen your contests, even if not in person and I've seen potential. I plan and conduct my Pokémon but from what I've seen, you have a certain still for acting in the moment. Both styles, whilst opposite, have advantages and disadvantages. I look forward to facing you on the stage. Whether tomorrow or another day, but I believe it'll be a real vivace."
"Hehehe, thanks," she giggled with burning red cheeks. He lifted her hand and placed a peck on the knuckle, just like he had done to her. Bidding them goodbye once more, he set off with Numel walking beside him. She watched until he disappeared from sight, turning towards the young coordinator.
"See, I'm not the only one who thinks you could win this," she encouraged.
"He hardly said I could beat him," she rolled her eyes, the redness fading from sight, "and why does every guy have to be interested in you. Ash, Drew and now Clark. I guess it's true to what they say, blondes really do have all the fun."
"Firstly, I don't know who says that but eww," she shivered to emphasis her point, "and secondly, I doubt either of us were on his radar. He was just being polite."
"What do you mean?" she asked.
"That article that I read about him? Well, it might've revealed he has more interest in Brock or Ash," she replied, "but you need to stop worrying about finding someone. If it happens, it'll happen. It won't mean anything if you force it."
"Yeah, yeah, you've said," she rolled her eyes, her electric type jumping down to her feet, "so what sort of training did you have in mind?"
"Well, like Clark said, he plans ahead of time," Serena smiled, "I had a similar style. I even spent months studying contests before even competing in one. So, I'll be your opponent, well, me and Meditite."
"Why Meditite?" she asked, as Serena released the fighting psychic type.
"Two reasons. I don't have any fire types on me right now, which are Clark's speciality, but the long-range psychic moves would make a good substitute for the type," she explained, "and she also has more battle experience than Ralts. So, are we gonna do this or not?"
"We're in," she nodded, walking over to the opposing side of the battlefield. Minun followed suit but stopped closer to the centre-circle.
For the next few hours, they spent time battling and talking battle tactics. Minun became quite adept at using her cheering and agility to bounce around the field and away from attacks. Whilst May also became better at thinking on her feet, even catching both Meditite and herself off guard quite a few times.
They took a break to watch Mawile's appeals performance whilst Nurse Joy healed up both of their respective Pokémon. As the sun began to set, they met up with Ash and Brock, and was led back towards the campsite to the north of town. A small river ran past the top and it was apparently halfway between the centre and the contest hall. It was a nice little area although even from here, she could see a couple more tents scattered around them.
It didn't take them long to settle down for a dinner, curtsy of Brock and chef Trapinch... although she did wonder why he brought him one of those white chef hats. Being a bipedal Pokémon, surely, he couldn't have helped out that much with the cooking process.
Once finished, they packed everything away and got in a couple more hours training in. She sighed as she stood in front of the tent she shares with Ash, unzipping the entrance, she climbed in, landing on her hands and knees, protected by the spread-out sleeping bags. Her boyfriend was sat on the other side with a Pokéball in his hand. Head turned downward with the eyebrows pulled together. Crawling forward, she cleared her throat.
"Hey," she snapped him out of his little trace. Turning towards her, he smiled and placed the device on the ground next to their sleeping bags. Crawling over, she curled around, seating herself in his lap whilst pressing her lips into his, "whatcha thinking about?"
"Huh, I called Professor Oak before we returned to camp," he sighed, wrapping his arms around her. Nuzzling his head into the crook of her neck, feeling his breath on her skin sent swanna-bumps all over her body, "do you want me to leave so you can get changed for bed?"
"No," she replied, leaning her forehead against his so their eyes locked together. Her arms ekansing around his body, "I want you to talk to me."
"Well, I was checking in, seeing how stuff was going," he explained, "might've switched Houndoom for Croconaw to help team Corphish aqua jet."
"But-" she encouraged.
"It was Leaf who answered," he sighed, "apparently the others were busy sorting out some sort of commotion on the ranch. Taillow and Hitmontop ended up having a pretty vicious battle that Pidgeot and some others split up... Hitmontop came off worst."
"Is he-"
"He'll be fine but he's in the labs emergency room. Apparently, Professor Oak doesn't want him to leave just yet so he can keep an eye on him," he tightened his embrace around her, "he said if you wish too, call tomorrow. He'll have more of an idea of his condition then."
"Right," she sighed, relaxing back into the embrace, "I will."
"But I switched Houndoom with Taillow. Seeing as they just fought, I thought it'll be best to keep them apart for a while," he replied, "and I was just thinking about how to approach her about it. I mean, she's hardly the most talkative Pokémon we've met."
"Why not let her out," she suggested, "that seems like a good place to start with talking to her."
"You sure you're not angry?" he asked.
"Of course, I am," she sighed, "but I also know how Hitmontop can be... and besides, it would be hypocritical to not hear her out after how many times I lectured Misty early on about letting her anger take control."
"Don't remind me," he muttered, tightening her embrace around her. Nuzzling his head into her neck, he pecked her skin, "you're the best. You know that?"
"Hehehe, I know," she giggled. Loving his show of affection.
He released his grip on her and reached for the Pokéball. Staring at it for a moment, he pressed the middle button and a red light shot out. The small female bird landed on the ground. Her feathers looked a little ruffled up, but she stood straight, eyes locked into his.
"Miss me already?" she heard the mental voice along with her audible squawks.
"I heard you got into a fight," he replied.
"I battled several Pokémon at the lab," she declared, "you'll need to be more specific."
"Hitmontop," he grunted, "you put him in the emergency bay."
"He deserved it," she shrugged, "I would apologise but I'm not sorry."
"Will you tell us why?" Serena asked, "he is one of my team. I have a right to know what happened between."
"He found out I'm gay," she replied, matter-of-factly, "he didn't approve. He couldn't live up to all his talk. Simple as that."
"Your gay?" she asked, "you never told us that before."
"You never asked," Taillow shrugged, "but I didn't try to hide it. How many guys have I trapped myself over like you are with my trainer?"
"I erm-"
"I guess that explains why Drew's Roselia's attract didn't work," Ash shrugged, "but you can't just beat up someone you don't like."
"He challenged me. I don't hold back," she growled, "had he wanted it to stop, he should've yield."
She sighed as her eyes lingered on the tough bird Pokémon. She knew as well as anyone her fighting type can be stubborn and certainly isn't shy to share his beliefs on certain things. She also knows that those thoughts were beaten into him by his siblings before she met him... she's been trying to help him accept the differences, but could it be too late?
May sighed in relief as she stepped foot into the contest hall. A cool breeze from the aircon hit her skin. It wasn't anything special, with both of the previous halls being bigger... although that could be because this one is currently packed. Everywhere she looked, she saw people crowded around.
"So much for not having many competing," she mumbled.
"I actually think most of these people are just observing," Serena replied, "which means we should hurry to get our seats."
"It's lucky that competing coordinators can reserve spots for their friends to watch," Max added.
"And I should head backstage," she nodded, "by the time I make it through this lot, I might be on time for the closing ceremony."
"I know your joking but in case you're not," Serena paused, placing a hand on her shoulder, and forcing her to look at her, "don't worry. Winning is just one thing, even just competing can help you become better. Just have fun with it."
"I will," she nodded, "thanks."
They bid each other goodbye, and she tried to force her way towards the door to the backstage. Some large man dressed as a stagehand stood against the door with a clipboard. As she approached, she saw him shoo away some other people. She guessed they were viewers trying to sneak in. After showing him, her pass and he confirmed that she was competing, he allowed her through, and the difference was night and day. Hardly anyone was present in the corridor, as she made her way to the waiting room with help from the signs on the walls.
Reaching the room, she found a few more coordinators scattered around but no-where near what one might expect. Taking a seat, she took out her cherish ball and Pokéball which contained the two team members she planned on using. Turning towards the screen, she saw Vivian stood with a microphone, listening she caught the tail end of the introduction, "-now it's time for our first coordinator, Clark Klemperer from Goldenrod in the Johto region!"
The blue haired coordinator walked out with a baton stick in one hand and Pokéball in the other. The camera scanned the large audience with a loud cheer echoing through the entire building. Cutting back to him, his lips held a confident smile as he bowled towards them.
"I believe a nice adagio should get us all warmed up this morning," he smiled, holding his device out and his Numel materialised right in front of him, "let's start with andante, dear Numel."
Slowly walking forward, the fire ground type let out a long cry. High pressured white steam blew out of the top of the hump, with a high-pitched whistle.
The ground began to shake around the numb Pokémon. Despite the violent action, the fire ground type seemed un-affect.
"Let's turn this piano into a mezzo," he instructed, waving the wand around.
Cracks spread out from Clark's partner, a bright orange heat radiating out. Taking a deep breath, he shot out a strong wing from his mouth. Blowing over the boiling cracks, they became alight in fire balls. Soaring around the stage in a circular manner. Orbiting around the numb Pokémon.
Taking off from his position, he went running in the opposite direction of the embers. Smashing into his chest, a sort of flaming armor surrounded him.
"Forte!"
Leaping up, he slammed a foot down on the ground. A pillar of earth burst out in front of him. Stopping in front of it, the fire armor went flying off.
The flames engulfed the pillar, causing it to crumble back down into the gap it previous shot out off. A bubbling pit of lava covered the floor.
"Coda!"
Stopping in the middle of the stage, Numel started shaking violently. A Bright red colour overtook his body. The high-pitched whistle increased in pitch as bright orange-red lava erupted out of his back. Soaring high above the stage.
Turning his head upwards, a single stream of flames blew upwards. Hitting the previous lava plume, they exploded into a series of multicoloured fireworks.
As the embers rained down over the stage, the blue haired boy tucked the baton into his sleeve. Standing next to his partner, he bowed towards the audience as the crowd erupted in applause. The lights returned to normal as Vivian walked up beside him.
"A truly fiery display to start off our show this morning," she smiled as the audience quietened down, "now to see what our judges thought!"
"A masterful display of the element, both the destructive power and beauty which can be created," Mr Contesta explained.
"I thought it was remarkable," Mr Sukizo smiled.
"Numel was far more active and quicker to move than most of their species," Nurse Joy nodded, "a real testament to how well raised he's been."
She bite her lower lip as the screen switched back to a face shot of the female host. Down casting her gaze into the two devices in her lap, she thought about her own performance. Especially compared to her last two performances, this one is hardly eye catching... would it be enough with Clark as competition?
Serena sighed as she watched the next coordinator walk out onto the stage. Clark was certain skilled, and his execution seemed flawless. He hardly needed to tell his Pokémon which move, showing a deep level of trust with them, instead using his musical terminology to instruct intensity and pace.
"So, you guys made it," a male voice appeared. Turning towards the source, she found Drew walking towards them, he leaned against the railing since she was in the final seat in the row, "and I suppose that means May decided to compete after all."
"Of course," she nodded, "you can't only compete if your one-hundred percent sure you'll win. You should know after Slateport."
"Hmm," he scoffed, "had Roselia been at full capacity, the results would've been different. Besides, Clark may only have three badges currently, but he's also only entered three contests this season. I wouldn't be so confident about her capabilities when faced against someone like him."
"What do you want?" she asked.
"I came here for one reason, to study my competition," he replied, "I know Clark is the favourite to win this year. So, if I wish to overcome him in the grand festival, I need to start preparing sooner rather than later."
Sighing, she refocused on the stage. The eighth coordinator of the stage finished up and after the appraisal from the judges, made her way off. Vivian appeared to wait until she was out of sight before raising the microphone once more.
"And for our final contestant today, we have the upcoming star May Maple from Petalburg city," she announced.
Her friend ran out onto the stage and tossed a Pokéball up into the air. Bursting open the light shot down in front of her and Mawile appeared in front of her, both bowing towards the audience as a moderate applause followed.
May walked to the edge of the stage, grabbing a pile of throwing discs as Mawile walked to the centre stage. One by one, she tossed the toys to her.
Spinning around on the spot, a pink-tinted wind picked up around her. Grabbing the flying objects out of the air, they went orbiting around her.
Using the appendage on her head, the steel fairy type knocked the discs back. One by one, May caught the items placing them down on the ground.
Grabbing three baseballs from off the stage, she tossed one at her steel fairy type. Using her mouth appendage, she knocked it up into the air. Throwing the second one, Mawile followed suit. The duo went three for three and soon she was juggling for the audience.
"Let's move on to the final part," May instructed.
Opening the appendage, she caught the first ball inside, snapping shut. Her small arms caught the second ball. Jumping forward, her feet hit the ball.
Catching the one knocked back, she kneeled down and took the two remaining balls. Passing her Pokémon, a stick with a red ribbon flowing behind her.
"I-is Mawile performing a dance?" Drew stuttered, "this isn't some sort of showcase."
The fairy steel type went leaping around the stage. The ribbon trailing behind, in time with a single clapping beat curtsy of May herself.
"Maybe not but Mawile was intrigued by my Pokémon's performance training," she shot back, "and whilst not traditional for a contest, anything is permitted, provided it's entertaining to watch. As long as she shows off Mawile's personality and skills, whatever they may be, she has a chance."
Swirling around on the spot, the ribbon danced around her. Her entire body shone in a silver metal coating, sparkling under the stage light.
"Well other than Clark, the competition is hardly tight today," he shrugged, standing up and turning to leave, "and don't think that just because she's got you to guide her beforehand that it equates to the pressure of facing a true opponent on stage... you should know that, at the very least."
"And finished!" May declared, taking the ribbon stick off her dissever Pokémon. Both bowing with a growing applause. She cast a glance to the side and saw the green haired boy making his leave. Turning back to the stage, she saw Vivian walk out once more.
"Now what a simple but mesmerising performance to close off our appeals round," Vivian announced, "now before we take a short intermission for our judges to decide who'll go on to the final four battling for today's ribbon, we'll hear what they have to say about May's performance, Mr Contesta?"
"I felt like it was a nice, simple but effective display of Mawile's playful side," he explained, "the sort I'd expect to see from a new coordinator going for a first or second time."
"It was remarkable!" Mr Sukizo smiled.
"Mawile certainly seemed to have a fun time," Nurse Joy added. Giving a small nod to the trio, May made her way off stage with Mawile by her feet.
As the stage lights dimmed and the judges set off from their panel, Serena's brows pulled together. Chewing on her inner cheek, she clasped her two hands together. She was certain that May had done enough to pass on, especially considering the few coordinator's still competing but facing a coordinator like Clark, that would be another matter entirely. Her friends lingered in and out of conversation and before long Vivian returned with the judges.
"Sorry about the wait everyone but our judges have finally decided which of our coordinators will be moving onto the top four to battle it out for our elegant Fallarbor ribbon, and they are!" Vivian gesture up to the screen above her.
The first image to appear was Clark, not that she was surprised. Regardless of her gut feeling about him, he had done a great job in his performance. The second image appeared, and it appeared to be a boy older than even Clark, he might even be in his twenties. If she remembered correctly, he performed some sort of disco display with an Electrode. May ended up in the first spot and another girl took up the final spot, again in her early twenties. It was harder to remember her appeals performance, but she was certain she used some small blue bird Pokémon with cloud-like wings.
"And there you have it!" Vivian announced, "our final four are, Clark Klemperer, Jack Thompson, May Maple and Claire Lampent! Now let's see how our top four battles shall be facing each other!"
The images on the cards turned over to a simple Pokéball design. Piling on top of each other, two split off upwards to the top halve of the screen while the remaining two went downward. The top two turned over, revealing Clark and Jack facing each other in the first round, whilst May and Claire appeared in the bottom two cards. Sighing in relief, she slumped back into her seat.
Clark and Jack had a quick opening battle, barely reaching the three-minute mark. It was Clark's Quilava against an opposing Vigoroth. She already knew that Jack was planning on showcasing the skilful side of fighting over flash, similar to her Farfetch'd. Although with Clark's direct but coded instructions, the points were knocked out well within the time limit. After a brief intermission for them to return the field to neutral, Vivian walked back into the centre stage.
"This will be a one-on-one contest battle between May and Claire!" Vivian explained, "for those of you who don't already know, a contest battle is one where the aim is to show off your own Pokémon whilst battling! Our judges will be removing points as applicable until either side hits zero! Of course, they could also win through running out the five-minute time limit, in which case the coordinator with the most points remaining shall win! So, let's see who'll be battling! A quick reminder that each coordinator registered their selected Pokémon beforehand and are now unable to switch!"
Both coordinator's walked out onto the stage, each taking a place in one of the trainer. With the audience going silent, she could've sworn she heard a pin drop. They stood still, each holding a different Pokéball in their respective hands.
"Minun, take the stage!" May shouted, tossing her cherish ball into the air.
Her pure electric type materialised on the field with a summersault, landing right in front of the young coordinator. She narrowed her eyes to see that she was breathing heavily. While she was certain it was a little fright about being on stage the first time, once the battle started, she should be fine.
"Time to shine, Spinda!" Claire shouted, holding her device out.
In a flash of light, a bipedal Pokémon shaped like a teddy bear appeared. The eyes were made of two black spirals, which seemed to point in the opposite direction of each other. Similar swirling patterns were on the ears. It was pretty small but still taller than Minun herself. Having stumpy arms and legs, and the coat was primarily a cream colour. The arms were red, and it had a red stripe bordering along the bottom of its belly, as well as two small spots on the soles of it's feet. Four red spots covered the face, a heart shaped one over the left eye. She pulled out her Pokédex and scanned May's newest opponent:
Spinda, The Spot Panda Pokémon. No two Spinda are said to have identical spot patterns on their hides. This Pokémon moves in a curious manner as if it is stumbling in dizziness. Its lurching movements can cause the opponent to become confused
Stumbling side to side, Minun crouched low with legs spread. The lights from the audience went down, spotlights shooting down to illuminate the stage.
"May has gone with her Minun, while Claire has gone with Spinda. Neither side has a massive advantage in type or evolution," Vivian announced, "either side could take this round so only one way to find out! Let's get this battle on the way!"
May verses Claire: Top Four
Serena frowned as her attention focused on the stage and her friend. Minun ran forward, performing a few leaps and spins as she closed the gap. With one final jump, her body sparked with electricity. On a straight course for their opponent.
Spinda, however, swayed side to side. It seemed to be a last second dodge, but she spun to the side. Continuing her step-to-step sway.
Minun crashed into the ground, turning into a heel. The electricity depleting around her. Charging forward, the normal type dodged in the same way.
"It's sort of like how Slakoth moved... when he moved," Max mumbled, "before he evolved, at least."
She nodded but remained silent. Focusing back on the field, she saw a continued pursuit and miss from May's electric type, each dodge removing some points.
"Fall back Minun and start a routine!" May shouted, "we need to get control of this pace!"
The cheering Pokémon leaped forward but didn't try to hit Spinda. Landing on her heads, she performed a brief handstand, throwing herself forward and back onto the legs. Entering a short run, she performed a cartwheel and made their way around outer part of the stage.
"Psybeam!" Claire commanded.
Spinning on the spot, her swirled eyes glew with a multicolours. Two beams shot out straight towards the pure electric type.
She continued to leap around the field, almost effortless avoiding the blasts. Glancing back up to the screen, she saw her friend slowly even out the points with the same strategy used by their opponent.
"Spark to get in close!" May shouted.
Landing on all fours, she spun on a heel back towards the normal type. Charging straight towards the two incoming beams, electricity burst around her.
Shooting between the two beams, they seemed too unaffected her as she closed the gap. Narrowing her eyes, she saw the psychic moves stop and a bright light engulf the normal type a moment before impact. It was difficult to make out which move she switched to exactly.
The two Pokémon were engulfed with electricity. Swaying side to side, Spinda seemed unaffected as Minun jumped back towards May's side.
"Thunder wave!" her friend instructed.
Rubbing her hands against her cheeks, the hands burst with sparks. Throwing them forward, small bolts jumped towards the normal type. Spinda coated herself in a ball of electricity once more, absorbing the element into her shield, unharmed.
"And it seems Claire's Spinda has used copycat to learn spark," Vivian announced, "a clever strategy to neutralise their opponents typing."
She frowned as she studied the normal type. From this far, she could make a couple of assessments about May's opponent. They hardly seemed combat ready, but they at least had a few strategies ready to throw an opponent off... but if she can get past the shield, May should have a home run ready.
"Let's get in close!" May hollered, "quick attack!"
Shooting off across the ground, Minun smashed into the electrified normal type. Knocking her back, the two Pokémon went rolling across the ground, ending with May's cheering Pokémon landing next to her opponent.
"Body slam!" Claire shouted.
Standing up, the normal type walked over and fell down. The pure electric type rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding the body slam.
Swirling around into a crouching position, Minun pushed herself up. Performing a small cheer routine, a white light covered her body. Forming it into a ball, she pushed it into the normal type, as she struggled back onto her feet.
"Psybeam!"
Spinda swayed back and forth. She couldn't help but smirk as she saw the blank expression when no ESP beam shot out of her eyes.
Using the opening, Minun charged forward. Electricity jumped off her body, hitting the side where Spinda swayed to. Landing, she turned on a heel and smashed into the stunned opponent.
A field of electricity engulfed both of them, creating a dome around them. Massive bolts shot off in all directions. It was only a few seconds before fading.
The normal type fell flat onto her back as Minun stood over her. Striking a pose towards the audience, she let out a couple happy chirps.
"And Spinda has been deemed unable to battle!" Vivian announced as she ran out on stage, "meaning May and Minun will move onto the final round!"
May took a deep breath as she made it back to the waiting room. Releasing it, she relaxed against the wall. The slight stutter of footsteps caught her attention. Turning towards the corridor, she blinked in surprise. Clark stood in the hallway, a confident half smile on his face.
"Well done, dear," he nodded, "I just wanted to tell you that regardless of what happens, you've done yourself justice."
"The last coordinator I faced in a contest was kind and friendly," she crossed her arms, locking eyes on him, "he embarrassed me during the battle. Not just by beating me, that wouldn't have been so bad. He recorded my brother telling a family story and played it for the whole crowd to hear."
"I am aware," he nodded, "but I'm not here to trick or diseeve you."
"You'll forgive me if I don't believe you," she frowned.
"You have no reason too," he shrugged, turning back around, "but this is my truth. I love the arts of music and contests. Finding talent within either medium, regardless of where they come from, is what I love to do. And I see that potential within you, which is why I wanted to wish you luck. And offer some advice."
"Huh?" she looked up, her arms dropping to her side.
"Don't worry about your opponent," he replied, "in an orchestra. You may be performing with others, but you have no control over how they play their part. I suggest that you just ensure you perform to your best ability regardless of what the other players might do or not."
The blue-haired teen started to walk away, and she lingered on his back. Maybe she let her interaction with Harley cloud how she handled her opponents and interactions with the coordinator's this time around. Letting out a breath, she saw one of the stagehands approach him. Giving him a quick instruction, he set off towards the stage, as the assistant came over to her. Leading her over to the back of the stage, she watched Vivian run back into the spotlight.
"And now folks it's time we move onto our final match of the day!" Vivian's voice echoed, "despite the small collection of coordinator competing in today's event, we've definitely seen quality over quantity, and no-one embodies that more than our first competitor, Clark Klemperer from Goldenrod city."
She watched him smile and walk onto the stage from the opposite side with a single handwave to the crowd. He stopped in the trainers box and lowered his hand, extending his baton in one hand as the crowd continued to loudly cheer for him. It was possibly the loudest she's heard any contest be.
"And his opponent is an uprising coordinator and daughter of the Petalburg gym leader," Vivian continued, "it's May Maple!"
As she walked out onto the stage, the lights still blinded her. It didn't take her long to reach the trainers box as her eye glanced across the crowd, who were cheering but not nearly as loud or as enthusiastic as they were for her opponent. Locking eyes with him, she saw the Pokéball in his spare hand. Glancing back at his face, he smirked and held the device out, "da capo, Quilava!"
In a flash of light, the middle-staged fire type landed on the stage. Performing a backflip, he landed on the two legs as he faced the crowd, both his head and lower back bursting into flames. Encouraging the crowd to cheer once more. She pulled out her Pokédex and scanned her opponent:
Quilava, The Volcano Pokémon. The evolved form of Cyndaquil. Quilava keeps its foes at bay with the intensity of its flames and gusts of superheated air. This Pokémon applies its outstanding nimbleness to dodge attacks even while scorching the foes with flames
Vivian quickly walked forward on the stage, quickening the quieting of the crowd. Once she seemed to have the full attention of those in hall, she smiled and raised the microphone back up to her face.
"It seems one of our coordinators is already to go so let's get down to the rules for this battle," Vivian explained, drawing everyone's attention, "this will be a one-on-one contest battle between our two finalists. both trainers have already registered their Pokémon and its whichever one reduces their opponents points to zero first shall be declared the winner and rewarded with the Fallarbor ribbon!"
Releasing a breath, she reached to her belt and took of her own device. Holding it below her downturned head, she stared at it while her finger ran across the top part. The cool metal tingled with electricity... or at least she thought it did.
"Minun, take the stage!" May shouted, tossing her cherish ball into the air.
Her pure electric type spun through the air as she landed on her two legs, arms spread upwards in a star shape. She let out a couple quick cries as their opponent crouched low, narrowing his eyes. She looked towards Clark, who fixed his suit and pulled his sleeves slightly, pointing the baton out into the air.
"So, the final match will be between Quilava and Minun!" Vivian announced, "we've seen both of these Pokémon earlier today, each with specialised style, whether with music or cheerleading! So, the only question is, which shall come out on top?!"
With her eyes set forward, she saw a flicker of light to the side, where the screen was. Although she was completely focused on the impending battle.
Clark verses May: Final
Serena narrowed her eyes as the battle started, lingering on the conductor, he waved the baton around, "start with an ember, leggero."
Quilava crouched low and shot out a quick spew of small fire balls. Minun ran forward, leaping over the light and fast embers. Performing a frontal roll, she landed on her legs, arms spread out. The pure fire type tilted his head, redirecting the barrage after May's cheering Pokémon.
Running away from the attacks, Minun leaped forward. Her arms landed on the floor, as her legs went over top. Landing back on her feet, she jumped.
Curling up into a ball, she spun over the embers and landed right in front of their opponent. Clark flicked his baton around, "cadenza, Quilava, giocoso."
Shooting off from his position, he burst past Minun. The electric type stumbled backwards but spun on her heel, landing in a position one might start a race.
She took off after the volcano Pokémon, who zipped around the outer field. Launching out another barrage of embers.
"Counter with thunder wave and get close!" May shouted.
Engulfing her body in electricity, she took off after her opponent. Small bolts of electricity shout out, bursting through the fire balls, cancelling each other out.
Minun made a dive for the dark blue topped Pokémon, he rolled to the side. Both ended up crouched low whilst facing each other. A slim stream of flames shot out of his mouth and straight towards the cheering Pokémon. Whilst May's partner made a dive into the attack, disappearing from sight.
A sort of electrical explosion engulfed the flamethrower with smoke covering the collision. Narrowing her eyes, she smirked at the sight.
The pure electric type rolled under the stream and stopped on one knee right next to the volcano Pokémon. Rubbing her cheeks, she sparks flew off and she leaped forward. Nuzzling into her opponent, she rolled behind as sparks of electricity jumped off Quilava, who froze in place.
"Oh dear, it seems we need to re-approach this show," Clark sighed, "poco-a-poco with smoke and stars, my dear."
Taking a deep breath, the fire type turned in place. Blowing outward, a thick black cloud of smoke formed over the side of the field where Minun stood.
Ending the first move, he grunted with static bouncing off his body. Swinging his head, a barrage of golden stars shot out. Swirling around the cloud, it created a wind funnel, tightening the smoke screen trap, which contrast nicely with the accompanying swift base.
"Escape like we practised and go surfing!" May shouted.
Sparks of electricity bounced off the funnel as it jumped upwards. Whilst not traditionally glamorous, she had to admit, the unique combination was intriguing.
An electric pillar erupted within the smoke, causing it to disperse. As the bright yellow current disappeared, Minun was revealed on top of one of the swift stars. Her body completely covered as the spark protected her from the makeshift surfboard.
Leaning side to side, Minun quickly learnt how to influence her path forward. Shooting straight towards her target, who stood still on the field.
"Rhapsody!" he shouted.
A single ember shot out of the volcano Pokémon, static over taking his body. Leaning to one side in an attempt to avoid it, she ended up falling off the star.
She rolled in the ground, stopping just in front of their opponent. Pushing herself up, Minun locked eyes with Quilava.
"Rubato with the coda," Clark declared.
Running off, the pure fire type curled up into a ball. Flames bursting around his body. He circled around the cheering Pokémon, whilst she pushed herself up.
Sparks of electricity jumped out of the top of the building display. Shooting into the side, she knocked the volcano Pokémon sideways. The flames died down as he continued to roll around. Spinning on the spot, a light shimmered around May's cheering Pokémon.
The pure electric type went rolling around the floor, picking up speed as she charged after their opponent. Flames surrounded the middle-stage Pokémon.
He stumbled forward as sparks engulfed his body. Bringing him into a crashing stop. Minun continued to use her copied Rollout and smashed straight into his face. Using their opponent as a ramp, she ended up high above the papalised fire type.
Spinning around in a stylised cheer, sparks surrounded her body. Falling straight down, she crashed into his back as a loud buzzer sounded.
"With time up, we look to the scoreboard," Vivian declared, running back on stage. Her eyes turned towards the screen and a smile overtook her lips, "and our winners are May and her Minun!"
May took a deep breath as she stood at the edge of the stage. There was a brief break whilst they cleaned up the field from the aftermath of their battle. Soon the host ran out on stage from the opposite side, microphone in hand with a spotlight following her every movement.
"Welcome back to our closing ceremony for today's Fallarbor contest," she declared, "so first help me in welcoming our judges to the stage."
A series of cheers and claps could be heard as the three judges walked up from their seats. Mr Contesta was stood slightly in front with a pillow in his hands although she couldn't make out what was on it, she knew from the Slateport contest what it held. As both Nurse Joy and Mr Sukizo stood slightly behind.
"And now to welcome our winner and the other coordinators who made up our top four placements! As well as their Pokémon partners!"
Turning to her shoulder, she saw Minun smile at her. Down by her foot stood Mawile, who held her hand up for her to grab. Taking a deep breath, she turned back to the stage and found the other three coordinators. Clark had Quilava by his feet, Claire had Spinda and the fourth other coordinator, a boy named Robin had a Taillow perched on his should. Closing her eyes, she stepped forward, leading her two Pokémon along with her.
She stopped close by Vivian, with her fellow coordinators stood behind. Her breath stuck in her throat with the clapping crowd blinded by the stage lights, for a split second it sounded kind of quiet but soon a louder clap drew her attention. Glancing back, she saw Clark stood with a smile as he made no secret about his applause. This must've encouraged the crowd to follow suit, as they increased in volume. A small smile formed on her lips as the head judge walked forward. Holding the pillow, she was able to take in the sight of the prize. The ribbon was dark red with orange lining around the side, a black centre button holding it together. He gestured down to the prize, and she reached out, picking it up. He held a hand up, silencing the crowd.
"Well done, May, you certainly improved since your last performance," he praised, "we all look forward to see what you come up with next time."
"Thank you, sir," she whispered, taking the ribbon off the pillow. Holding it in her hand, she held it up for Minun to see. Who gave a happy chirp in her eye, smiling, she kneeled down and showed it too Mawile as well? If nothing else, this proves her first victory wasn't a fluke or anything of the sort.
"Well folks, that wraps up this week's Fallarbor contest! I've been your host Vivian and I look forward to seeing all of you," she announced, "and all of our wonderful coordinator's at the next contest!"
With the crowd erupting in cheers, May stood back up, clenching the prize in her hand. Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath, soaking in the loud applause, feeling a tingle spread across her entire body. Opening her eyes, the stage lights turned off. Realising the cue to clear the stage, she turned around and saw the three judges walking off to the left as the other coordinator's went down the right. Quickly running to catch up, she just made it behind the scenes as the lights around the audience turned out. The patter of feet echoing as she heard them clearing out the viewing area.
She made her way down the corridor and smiled as she let the victory sink in. Reaching the waiting room, she grabbed her backpack and pulled out her case, placing the new ribbon next to her first one. With a deep breath she thanks and recalled her two Pokémon. Standing back up, she turned to find Drew.
"Hey," he gave a slight nod.
"Hey," she quirked an eyebrow up.
"I wanted to catch you before you left," he shrugged, leaning against the wall, "maybe I was too quick to judge you. You did a good job out there."
"Heh, so you finally think I'm an actual coordinator," she smirked, crossing her arms across her chest.
"A coordinator is just a trainer whose competed in a contest," he closed her eyes, "by that definition, you've been one since Slateport."
Letting out an annoyed growl, she rolled her eyes and set off out of the room. As she passed by him, she couldn't help but glance to the side and noticed he opened his own. Stopping in her tracks, his lips flicked up in a smirk.
"But you did do good here. Better than I expected," he replied. Throwing his hand up, a red rose flew out of his sleeve, and he held it by the stem. Offering it out, she slowly reached and grabbed it. Staring down at the flower in her hand, "it's for Minun. Plusle enjoyed watching her battle."
Glancing up at him, he turned around and started walking down the corridor. Glancing back at the flower, she felt a small tingle hit her cheeks as she tightened her fist around it. Placing the rose in the top of her bag, she took a deep breath and glanced back towards him.
"See ya at the next contest," he added, raising a hand up as he disappeared around the corner of the hallway.
With a smile on her face, she took a deep breath. Pushing the red tingle out of her cheeks, she set off out of the hall. Meeting her friends within the lobby, they gathered in a small circle.
"Congrats May," Ash smiled, "your another step closer to the grand festival."
"Yeah May, that swift riding move was awesome!" Max added.
"You feeling alright, Max?" she asked, "you never praise me."
"It was more praise for Minun, actually," he smirked.
She sighed and rolled her eyes, but the smile never left her face. Refocusing on the others, both Serena and Brock added in their own praise before they went walking out of the building.
"So, since we're camping out anyway, we might as well just set off," Ash suggested, "I mean, we've still got half the day which we can use for travelling."
"I second that," Max added, "the sooner we set off, the sooner we get to see meteor falls!"
"And then it's off to Larvaridge for gym badge number four!" Ash added.
"Well since you two have so much energy," Serena smiled, "you can be in charge of packing up our camp site. I want to call the lab before we go so, I'll head off to the centre. We can meet up afterwards."
"I'd like to call my family too, check how Aron doing and maybe do a little switching around," Brock added.
"And I want to get Minun checked up before we go," May added.
The two boys nodded and set off in a quick run across the mostly barren ground. Following her two companions at a much slower pace, her mind flickered back towards the rose in her bag. While he said it was for Minun and from Plusle... something about the exchange certainly felt different.
"So, who are you planning on bringing over Brock?" Serena asked.
"I'm gonna exchange Aron with Lombre. I feel like he'll be better at dealing with my siblings and keeping them entertained," he smiled, "and I also want to exchange Rhyhorn with Shuckle. I've read about some herbs in the mountains near meteor falls and they should be able to be used in his juicing process."
"What about you, May?" Serena asked, "are you gonna call your parents? Switch Clamperl back in with your current team?"
"Sure, I'll call 'em," she replied, "but I don't think I'll switch any of them yet. I mean, mountain ranges aren't exactly a natural Clamperl home."
