Author's Note:

Here it is, the action-packed part of the mount chimney arc. This is very much the meat of this three-parter so not much else to say. It's also where they meet the leaders of both teams, and we get an evolution. Hope you enjoy it. Also, some of you thought that Taillow was getting too arrogant in her ability... well keep an eye out for her battle here. Also, Braviary-eyed readers might notice that the chapter titles on the profile for this chapter is switched around with chapter thirty-eight. It's just because when writing it, I felt they fitted better this way. We also get to see the start of an arc I've been looking forward too... keep an eye out for Sylveon. Oh, and we're in a new year. Here's to a better one than the last two. Don't forget to vote in the poll & with that, let's begin.

Chapter Thirty-Seven: Clash atop Mount Chimney

Brock glanced back up to the volcano... it's been nearly ten minutes since his oldest travelling companions took off on the back of Pidgeot. Stood still with his arms crossed, he let out a small sigh. With a downward cast, he scanned the rest of the group.

The elder left to see to Zinnia shortly after the departure. May was pacing back and forth whilst chewing on her lower lip. Her eyes were cast downward with a low hanging head, arms wrapping themselves around her body. Sakura sat on the floor with her Espeon out, with closed eyes, she seemed to be in some sort of meditative stance, stroking her pure psychic type. Max also sat on the floor. The usually loud and energetic Vigoroth sat behind him in a strong, protective hug. His eyes were drawn back up to the top of the volcano when the faint sound of syrones echoed through the mountain.

Turning towards the path they entered through, he saw a police car zooming towards them with flashing lights. Dropping his arms to the side, he watched it come to a skidding stop nearby. Walking over, he watched Officer Jenny climb out.

"Is one of you Brock Harrison?" she asked, "we received a call claiming information on the criminal gangs aqua and magma."

"I am," he replied, stopping the other side of her vehicle, "I overheard them. A group of aqua people were battling magma. Interrogating them for information and my Solrock may have read their thoughts. Explaining that whatever magma is up to, is on top of mount chimney right now! A couple friends of ours flew off on a Pidgeot to try and help. "

"We've got a squad heading north from Rustboro to intercept them," she informed, "those grunts you saw won't get away. We've also had numerous sighting of magma around the base of the volcano but with no solid leads on their actions or motives."

"What could they be doing up there?" May asked.

"Nothing good, I'm afraid," Officer Jenny replied. Dropping back into her car, she pulled out some sort of phone device, "this is Officer Jenny of the Larvaridge side police department. Put me through to the G-Men call line, case-name omega."

She went silent for a moment. Clearly listening to the automated options on the other end of the call.

"I have information on current plans involving the target of case omega," she replied, "I need to speak to an officer now."

Pulling the phone away, a hologram image shot out with the picture of a man forming. He had long, spikey hair and some sort of mark under his left eye, but due to the type of hologram, he couldn't be certain of any colour.

"Special agent Brodie on attachment to case alpha and omega," he informed.

"Special agent, I've got some witnesses claiming magma are currently on top of mount chimney-"

"Yes, yes, we're aware," he dismissed, "we've already got a field team moving in on their location. Is that all?"

"A couple trainers have moved off in try and deal," she grunted with a flurrying browl, "they're travelling on a Pidgeot."

"Hold on-" he replied, pausing the hologram.

Brock locked his eyes on the frozen image of the special agent. Opening his hand, he stretched his fingers, rolling them around with a warm sweat on the palm. The silence only amplifying the thumping of his heart against his chest. It felt too long but eventually the hologram resumed.

"-alright. Bring in your witnesses to our makeshift base near Larvaridge," he informed, "I'll send over the coordinates. Make is asap."

"I'm not a chauffeur-"

"Not my idea and you really don't want to argue with the guy in charge," he commanded, his browl flurrying up with burning eyes, "now if you'll excuse me, I have my own assignment. The shot caller will want to debrief you as well, I suggest you don't keep him waiting."

Without a moment to hear a response, the hologram disappeared. Officer Jenny tossed the device back into the glove box and sighed, leaning against the top of her vehicle. Pushing herself up she stared at the group, clearly running options through her head. Closing her eyes, she climbed into the car.

"You heard him," she grunted, "ya'll better climb in."

Without missing a beat, he pulled the back door open, letting both Max and May climb in first. Climbing their way over the seats, he took the closest one in the back as Sakura took the front seat. He quickly grabbed Vigoroth's Pokéball and recalled his normal type through the down window. The car quickly started up and zoomed back down the road out of the mountain.

He glanced out of the window as the dark cave walls became his only view. The flashing lights providing limited illumination.

While his mind flashed towards the top of the mount chimney. What were magma up too? How many of them were there? Just what were his friends thinking... well that's easy. Ash wasn't. He knew better than most how hurt he was from what happened to Gyarados. If he could stop that happening to someone else, he wouldn't hesitate.

Serena also would do everything within her power to protect others, but he knew her main motivation was protecting Ash. When in an emotional rage, he hardly thinks logically, not that he does much of that normally. So, knowing she'll keep him focused and help formulate some plan, even if limited, could make the world of difference.

He might have full faith in both of their abilities to pull this off, it doesn't mean he won't worry... what else would an older brother do when stuck, unable to follow them straight into the fight?

He narrowed his eyes as the mountain closed in. The wind rushed past him as he felt Serena tighten her grip around his stomach. Pikachu tucked nicely on his lap as he held onto his large bird. The sight of golden locks blowing around drew his attention through the corner of his eye.

"Who did you swap Pidgeot with?" she asked.

"Grovyle," he replied, "I figured a grass type would be at more danger near a volcano. What about you with Bagon?"

"Zangoose. I thought that maybe giving Seviper some space would be best," she sighed, "I kinda wish I had his experience though."

"Well, you can still use your Pokédex for a switch when needed," he offered.

"Right. But right now, we need a plan of attack," she explained, "we can't just charge in. No doubt they've got guards which could keep us busy."

"What about my plan... attack," Pikachu pipped up, "and yes... that was a movie reference."

"Not the time," he grumbled down to his starter. Sighing, he glanced at the head resting on his shoulder, "your right... but I can't think of anything. We're not even sure what they are up to. You got any plans?"

"One," she replied, "Pidgeot, when we get closer, get low. I'll use my ESP to jump off and you can handle the battle. Keep 'em busy and I'll go forward to try and find out what's the plan."

"Wait, wait, wait," he stuttered, "why don't you battle, and I do the sneaky sneak?!"

"Because I have the ability to get off Pidgeot without her stopping," she explained, "and you're the one who decided to make an entrance on a giant bird."

"She has a point," Pikachu added.

"And we're out of time," Pidgeot squawked, "so without another plan, we'll go with the above."

Tightening his grip, his vision became blurred as his bird descended. His breath stuck in his throat as the wind threatened to throw them off. It lasted a matter of seconds but soon he found them at a steep climb adjacent to the rocky mountain ground. The black smoke head thumping out of the summit.

"Goodluck," his girlfriend's mental voice echoed in his head. Her lips pressed lightly against his cheek before the weight behind him disappeared.

He barely caught sight of her disappearing among the rocky ground as they cleared the top of the mountain. A large creator with boiling red lava was the first thing he saw as Pidgeot stopped mid-air, spreading her wings with an enormous cry.

"Subtly is key," Pikachu muttered.

As she came into a landing, he saw some sort of machine off in the distance. While many people dressed in red hoodies with the magma emblem on charged towards their landing. A large man tailed behind the grunts.

"Pidgeot... hang back for a bit," he whispered, "we know they've got some Pokémon who can fly. I want you ready to lead them away and handle them."

"What about me?" Pikachu asked.

"You're up first," he muttered, feeling the jolt of her landing.

Sliding off her back, he felt the electric type jump onto his shoulder. Walking around, he found a series of Houndour leading the charge with a swarm of Zubat from the sky. He glanced at his starter who smirked, cheeks sparking.

With a turn of his shoulder, the mouse Pokémon went flying. A ball of electricity surrounded his body and a large bolt struck out.

Spraying across the array of Pokémon, a series of cries and howls sounded. Landing down on the ground, the element faded with their opponents falling.

"Guess you're just gonna need to call me Cruella Devilla because I turned those pups-"

"Pikachu!" he cut the starter off.

"Spoil sport," he mumbled.

A large Mightyena smashed through the crowd and landed over his electric type. With mouth open, he attempted to bite his starter, but he jumped back.

"Seviper!" he shouted, tossing a Pokéball forward, "I choose you!"

His pure poison type flew forward with open mouth. Her fangs glew with a bright purple colour. Slamming them down on the ground, the pure dark type paced to the side, avoiding her opening attack. While her tail followed suit with it's own purple glow. Jabbing into the upper chest.

With her opponent down, she pounced. Wrapping her body around the canine, she constricted and restricted the movements.

Standing up on wobbling feet. He tried to thrash around and knock his snake off but due to her strong grip, his efforts were futile.

Opening her mouth, she stabbed her fangs down on his back. Seeing him stop in place, she released her grip and knocked him sideways with a poison tail.

He landed on his side and her tail came down with a bright white glow. He cried out in pain and collapsed onto the floor with a red light engulfing him.

"Heh, not bad kid," the large man scoffed, "now try this one on for size!"

In a flash of light, a large Machamp appeared, flexing all four arms. He reached down to grab his pure poison type.

Dodging to the side, she avoided the slow-moving fighting type. Wrapping her tail around the closed fist, she was lifted up into the air.

She quickly slide her body around the upper torso, locking the second top arm in place. With her head slivering around his back and biting down on one of his lower arms. Her eyes narrowed and nose wrinkled at clearly being stretched to max capacity.

The large superpower Pokémon stumbled around, using his one free arm to try and rip Seviper off... but to no-avail. He pulled out his Pokédex:

Machamp, The Superpower Pokémon. The final evolved form of Machop. Machamp is known as the Pokémon that has mastered every kind of martial arts. If it grabs hold of the foe with its four arms, the battle is all but over. The hapless foe is thrown far over the horizon

"I hope this doesn't awaken anything in me," Pikachu mused from his feet, "although I think Sylveon's feelers would be able to do it. Or something similar-"

She flexed her body, causing his two upper arms to jolt back and forth. Smashing into his own face.

"Just stop... please," he shook his head at his starter. Taking out two Pokéballs, he held them both out, "Seviper return. Kirlia use Psybeam!"

Two red lights shot out. One hit the pure poison type and sucked her inside. With the sudden loss of his restraint, the superpower Pokémon stumbled back, almost tripping over his own feet.

His psychic fairy type materialised in front of him. Pushing her arms forward, a multicoloured beam shot out. Striking the chest, he was knocked down.

Grunting in anger, the fighting type pushed himself up. Using all four of his arms, he picked up a giant rock.

Hurdling it at her, Kirlia's eye's glew bright blue. Sending out a wave of psychic type energy, she strained to deflect the projectile. Her feet scrapped across the rocky ground as she lifted the boulder by a couple of inches.

Diving to the floor, he watched it sail overhead. With a hard swallow, he turned towards their opponent, with the large man laughing heartily.

Locking eyes with the psychic fairy type, she frowned. Her nose twitched with anger.

Charging forward, she formed a bright ball with a tint of pink. With a leap, she landed on one knee and sent her newly learnt moon blast flying.

It struck the pure fighting type. Sending him flying, he landed directly on his trainer. With the two of them stumbling backwards, they landed in a pile.

The man growled in anger. Recalling his pure fighting type, he pushed himself up and switched devices, "you'll pay for that, brat."

He grabbed Kirlia's Pokéball with one hand and held his free hand hovering over the rest of his belt. Quickly, recalling his psychic fairy type, he attached her device to his side as he pulled out his Pokédex, just as their next opponent materialised in front of them.

A red light flashed and a mostly blue, rock-like Pokémon. With small round eyes, a red nose, which seemed much too large for its actual body size, and a bushy black moustache. As he looked closer, he saw it was made out of some sort of loose iron shavings. Three small objects were located around its base, which appeared to be shaped like some sort of bird heads with large beaks. It had a big red hat-like object atop it's head. He scanned the opponent:

Probopass, The Compass Pokémon. The final evolved form of Nosepass. The main body controls three mobile units called Mini-Noses, which it manuvers to catch prey. When first discovered, it was believed to be an electric type due to the magnetic field it produces but scientists dismissed it

"I'll choose Corphish!" he shouted, snatching the device off his belt. Whilst slipping the red block back into his pocket.

His pure water type went flying out with his two claws spewing water. Spinning them around, he smashed into the compass Pokémon, knocking him back.

Hovering over the ground, the rock steel type shook off the blow, his pure water type landed on the ground. The three rock-heads flew off the body.

"Shoot 'em down!" he instructed.

Opening his two claws, he shot out dual streams of high-powered bubbles. Quickly shooting down two out of the three projectiles. He readjusted his two claws to try and get the third one, it floated around with far more agility and sharp turns. The singular focus allows for more precise control.

It swooped and swayed, weaving in and out of the dual beams. Diving straight down, it smashed into the pure water type.

Corphish was knocked back landing on his back. Wiggling back and forth, he flipped back onto his legs as the rock went flying past him.

"Swift then destroy!" he shouted.

Using one claw, he shot out a barrage of golden, sparkling stars. They homed around and quickly caught up to the projectile.

Slowing it down enough, he opened his second claw and launched out another burst of bubble beams. It struck and knocked out the final rock-head.

A wave of electricity shot out and crashed into him. With a cry of pain, his body became stiff.

Serena used her powers to slow her decent, landing softly on a single bush on the rocky path. Watching closely, she saw her boyfriend's bird rocket over the top of the volcano and spread her wings with a loud cry.

Crouching low, she ran across the rocky ground. Taking a wide berth to avoid her boyfriend's battle, she started to climb up the side. Using her abilities to make it much easier than it would've been otherwise. She quickly reached the summit, hiding behind a large rock. Ash had his Seviper out, who seemed to be tied around a Machamp. Causing it to whack itself with his own arms.

It's a shame he never took part in contests, he always seemed to have a flashy sort of style perfectly suited to the format. No surprise May takes so much influence off him, even if she's been more training her personally. Shaking her head, she turned to scan the summit of the volcano.

There was a mostly flat surface but a large creator in the centre bubbled with lava. Up on a slight incline was a couple of people dressed in magma colours with some sort of device. Everyone else appeared to be surrounding Ash so she shouldn't have to much trouble. Location the next large boulder on the incline, she used her psychic powers to leap at it. Quickly cowering behind, peaking to keep an eye on the two remaining obstacles.

Seeing a rock right next to them, she took a deep breath. Using her ability once more, she leaped behind it. Hugging the natural part of the volcano, she took in the sight of the two humans. The first was an older man dressed in some sort of red lab coat over a profession suit of some sort, despite the colours of the gang. The main point of interest were his glasses which seemed to have some sort gem implanted in the top corner. A Camerupt stood beside him.

While the other was a young female, barely sixteen if she had to guess. Dressed in a large hoodie which hid most of her appearance, but a few strands of light indigo coloured hair blew out. She stood stiff behind the man as he fiddled about with the machine.

"Professor," the female addressed. Her voice sounding robotic and stoic, "it appears Tabitha is having trouble with that trainer on the Pidgeot."

"Well, you better go assist him," the man instructed with a wave of the hand, "I might not care for the barbaric games such as battle, but we can't risk interference at this stage."

"B-but-"

"Look Courtney," the older man turned around. Standing over her, he placed a hand on her cheek and tilted her gaze upwards. The half-closed eyes during the look made the honey-blonde girl feel sick in her stomach, "you collected the meteorite which has progressed our dreams this far. We can't stop now when everything we've worked towards is within our grasp. Within in a few minutes we'll be progressing mankind into the next stage of evolution."

"Right," she nodded. Turning on a heel, she marched down the path. Hugging the boulder, she slide around to remain out of her field of view.

Watching the young girl march down to the battle her boyfriend was fighting, she bite her inner cheek. With a frown, she turned back towards the professor, as the one identified as Courtney joined the battle. This man, whatever his name is, reminds her of one person... her father.

He is certainly a scientist... and he appeared to be manipulative, at the very least. Narrowing her gaze, she grabbed two devices off her belt.

"Stop!" she shouted, jumping out behind the man.

He turned to look at her with a mere shrug, turning back to the machine, "Camerupt, handle the child."

Tossing her Pokéball forward, her newly caught dragon type burst out. Leaping onto the long face of the fire ground type, she furiously scratched away as her claws burned with a dark blue flame. Despite their opponents attempts, to shake her off. Bagon appeared to be tightly stuck with her grip.

Seeing the smoke plummet out of the humps on the back, an idea popped in her head. The image of Ash facing one when they met the Winstrate's flashed in her head. A coy smile formed over her lips; this machine seems important to whatever they're planning.

Blinking, her eyes burst with psychic type energy. Spreading her hands, she focused on the eruption Pokémon.

Clenching her fingers opposite each other. Two bubbles of ESP formed within the humps, blocking the only exit.

A bright red colour formed over his entire body. Stumbling back and forth, he doubled down on throwing her dragon off. A low growl sounded from the man.

"Stop this madness!" he commanded, slamming his fist down on the machine.

"Gladly," she smiled, releasing her psychic hold.

Waves of lava and burning rocks erupted out of his back. Raining down over their battlefield and the machine.

Running back, she activated her powers to grab a hold of the man and her newest team member. Pulling them along, they fell onto the ground as the shakes from the eruptions knocked her off balance. She pushed herself up to see her dragon shaking her head just meters away as the man laid still.

Smoking rocks covered the ground they just ran across. The Camerupt lying down in the middle with swirls in his eyes.

Her focus shifted to the machine, which seemed battered and damaged. Sighing in relief, even if not stopped, that surely slowed them down.

"Impudent child," the man growled, pushing himself up, " do you have any idea what you could've done!"

"Saved the day. Stopped your... whatever you were doing," she replied, standing back up. He too returned to his feet as he recalled his Camerupt.

"You've merely sealed our plan but took away our means of control," he replied, "you could've sealed the fate of everyone on the mainland."

"What?" she asked.

"We came here to advance human progression. To create new land for development," he explained, "with further space, the sciencentific discoveries we could make are endless. New places to build state of the art labs, without destroying the natural beauty the commoners are devoted on protecting. Everyone wins."

"But if you erupt the volcano, anyone within the path would be killed!" she shouted.

"A minor sacrifice, I admit," he dismissed, "we've got explosives placed on the backside. We'll force the lava down to the north, being the closest to the ocean. Minimising any casualties there might be but maximising the expansion. Once it was believed moulding the earth was a job for just gods and legends."

"Your insane!" she shouted, "that path would lead the lava straight through Fallarbor town! All those people and the Pokémon in the surrounding area!"

"They're not important!" he slammed his foot down, "do you think anyone from that backwash town would discover the cure to one of the diseases which plague this world? Create the next invention to leap us forward into the future? On their ruins, magnificent scientific discoveries will be made!"

"At what cost?!" she shouted,

"A mere child could never understand," he shook his head. Taking out a Pokéball, "but we can't allow your further interference."

Holding his device out, a red light shot out. In front of him materialised a Dugtrio.

She quickly grabbed a Pokéball and threw it forward. In a flash of light, her pure grass type materialised. He landed and turned on a heel, leaping at her with open arms. She quickly raised her hand and created a weak psychic wall for him to hug, turning him around and returning him to the battle position.

"A psychic, fascinating. Research into the humans of your kind is limited," the man mused, "it's a shame we've met under these circumstances."

She narrowed her eyes as the power burst out of them. Connecting her inner mind with Cacnea's. The image of her father flashing in her head.

Her pure grass type pointed both of his arms forward, with his spikes glowing white. A barrage of white stinging pins shot out straight towards the opponent.

Dodging to the side, Dugtrio zoomed across the ground. The speed massively impressive as he closed in on her first caught Hoenn Pokémon.

His entire arms glew white and he spun around. Smacking the needle arms straight into the oncoming ground type, knocking him back.

The mole Pokémon spun out as her cactus Pokémon launched out several small seeds. They struck the top of the dazed ground type, expanding out in roots, with a red light engulfing him, zapping the energy. A mystic white healing shimmer shone over her happy-go-lucky partner.

Feeling the power tingle through her fingers, she held her hands together. With Cacnea following suit, a dark green ball of grass type energy formed.

It shot off and smashed into their opponent. Knocking Dugtrio back to his trainer's feet, swirls replacing his eyes.

"Cacnea... when did you learn energy ball?" she asked through the mental connection.

"I didn't... I don't think," he stuttered, "I felt your presence... and I think you manipulated the energy I produced. It was pretty exhausting."

"Sorry, I didn't even know I could do that," she apologised, "why not take a rest for now."

As her first caught Hoenn Pokémon disappeared back into his Pokéball, she turned to see the man with his next Pokémon already out. A Houndoom stood tall in front of him, with flaring fangs and threatening growl. His tail waving back and forth in a threatening manner.

She took out her own Pokéball and released Meditite. The psychic fighting type landed in front of her, with a strong opening stance.

The dark Pokémon leaped forward. His fangs burning with flames as he prepared to land on her.

Her partner rolled forward, under their opponent. Spinning on the heel, she was right behind him. With a glowing open hand, she smacked right into the back of the canine. Causing him to collapse down as she leaped upwards.

With a glowing knee, she brought it down straight into his back. A howl of pain echoed as she jumped in between Houndoom and Serena herself.

Swiping his paw forward, she performed a backflip to avoid it. A vortex of purple beams surrounded by darkness shot out of his mouth.

Meditite dropped into a meditative stance, floating to the side of the dark pulse. Serena used her own abilities to raise a rock and deflect it from striking herself. While the meditate Pokémon moved around the side, swiping her foot underneath.

It knocked out the front paw. As their opponent fell once more, she brought a second high jump kick up straight into his jaw. The dark fire type collapsed flat on his stomach with a red light quickly returning him.

"You're channelling your own abilities through your Pokémon, giving them a near omnipotent sense over the proceedings," the man explained, "intriguing."

He quickly recalled the fallen dark Pokémon with his second hand holding a new device. With a red light flashing and revealing a turtle Pokémon stood on four legs. A large, black, rock-like shell with several red holes around the side. An extra hole on top which was black. While the skin on the legs and head was a orangey-reddish brown colour. A long neck stuck out of the shell and held the small head. With eyes similar to Brock's, she pulled out her Pokédex:

Torkoal, The Coal Pokémon. Torkoal generates energy by burning coal. It grows weaker as the fire dies down. When it is preparing for battle, this Pokémon burns more coal. You find abandoned coal mines full of them. They dig tirelessly in search of coal

She put the device away and frowned, going through her team she tried to think of her best option. By her feet, she saw her newest team member thrashing around. Pinching her lips together, she melded their inner thoughts.

"You want to battle again, Bagon?" she asked, "you sure you can handle it?"

Turning upwards, the scrappy young dragon stared with wide eyes. She answered with a small nod.

May looked out of the window at the passing scenery. Not that she could really make anything out. Her lips pinched together, and she chewed lightly on her inner cheek. Feeling the car rock back and forth, she tightened her fist in anticipation.

While they've certainly dealt with situations like this before, Devon, Oceanic Museum and the millennium carnival come to mind... all of those, they were caught up in without any choice. Why would they just up and leave without a second's consideration? Do they even have a plan?

"Hold on tight!" Officer Jenny shouted.

The car flew to the side and screeched. She reached up and grabbed the handle from the ceiling as she was frown over to the middle seat where her brother was sat. He too was sent flying into Brock, who took up the final seat in the back. Grinding her teeth and squeezing her eyes shut, she refused to make a noise during the entire ordeal. With an ear-bursting screech the car came to a stop.

"Everyone alright?" Brock asked.

"Erm, yeah, I think," her brother mumbled, sitting back up.

"Did someone get the license plate?" she asked, rubbing her head.

"It wasn't another car," the female officer grunted. She glanced to the driver in front of her and saw the female officer holding her arm.

Glancing out of the window, she saw three people dressed in the magma outfits. In front of them stood a Houndoom, with a low stance and a threatening growl. A Golbat flapped overhead with a menacing glare. While a Numel stood off to the side.

"Why aren't they attacking?" Max asked.

"They're just buying time," Brock muttered, taking out a Pokéball, he handed it to the young boy in the seat next to him, "no doubt they'll want whatever is happening up top to remain secret."

"What's this for?" the young boy asked.

"It's Vigoroth," he muttered, "being the smallest, you'll be the most likely to get past them. He'll keep you safe."

"Now hold on," Officer Jenny winced, "I don't know what you're planning but-"

"You've hurt your arm, right?" he asked the officer, to which she nodded, "then you won't be able to properly concentrate. It's clear they want a battle and we're trainers so let us battle on your behalf. If we don't respond soon, they might just attack regardless."

While the officer didn't reply, she did let out a long sigh. Narrowing his gaze, he looked between May and Sakura, who sat in the passenger front seat.

"I'll take Numel," he explained, "I think Golbat will be the toughest. Being aerial will make them battle in another dimension."

"I can take that one!" Sakura explained.

Inwardly sighing, she gave another glance out of the window. While she briefly met Ash's Houndoom, that hardly fills her with confidence. He was stern and focused. A true leader, ready to face any opponent. While this one... seems less regimen... with flaring fangs and a stance ready to pounce.

"What a time to send Combusken to my parents," she mumbled, "I guess that means Houndoom is mine."

The doctor-in-training threw the door open with a Pokéball in hand. Shouting his command, he threw the Pokéball as he climbed out, her little brother following suit. As she scooted across to the open door, she saw Sakura also out of the vehicle. Glancing towards the field, she saw Mudkip spraying a jet of water straight into the Numel's face. It struck the fire ground type in the face as she climbed out of the car.

She caught sight of Sakura, who had her Beautifly out. The two duel flying types taking off into the sky, with their respective trainer's running behind.

Her eye glanced down to see the dark Pokémon staring daggers straight into her, with the spade tail waving behind. With a hard swallow her hand fell to her belt. Beautifly and Mawile are out for typing. After seeing how Seviper acted, she isn't ready to send Swablu, Minun or Skitty straight after another predator.

"Poochyena, take the stage!"

May's second caught Pokémon landed on the ground and crouched low. Flaring his own fangs with a series of loud barks.

Their opponent took a deep breath. A stream of flames blew past and engulfed her dark type, making him disappear from sight.

Diving to the side, she looked on as the flamethrower died down. Her attention turned to the small hole now under where her canine stood.

He shot up out of the ground and right into Houndoom's side. Knocking him sideways. Landing on all fours, he turned around and kicked up a heap of dirt into the larger Pokémon's face. Without missing a beat, he took off, creating distance from the stunned opponent.

"Odour Sleuth and track," the grunt commanded.

The larger Pokémon stood up with eyes squeezed shut. Shaking his body, he started sniffing the ground.

She turned to where her pup was once stood... only to discover she couldn't see him. Focusing on her opponent, the canine was sniffing the same spot.

Cracks appeared to the side and a black blur shot out. It took a moment, but she soon recognized the blur as Poochyena.

Houndoom jumped back, avoiding the second underground attack. With another deep breath, a thick purple smoke oozed out and engulfed her dark type.

Landing on the floor, he was coughing hard and wobbling back and forth. A single flicker of a flame blipped. The entire smog cloud turned into a raging inferno, with Poochyena behind sent backwards from the blast. Scrapping his back against the rocky floor, he landed on his side.

From within the flames, their opponent leaped at him. Smacking down on her downed Pokémon, he picked him up by the scruff of the neck.

Thrashing his head back and forth. Howling cries of pain sounded from her partner as her mind raced to try and find an out.

A bright light took over her pup's entire body. The opposing canine dropping him as his body began to change. Returning to a standing position, it finished.

Stood in his place was a quadrupedal Pokémon. Most of his fur was short and grey, but there was shaggy black fur on his lower legs, tail, and in two thick strips starting behind his eye, running down the length of his body. He had dark, triangular streak patterns below his eyes, which were red with yellow sclerae, and sharp fangs visible as he growled threateningly, now a good bit taller than their opponent. His ears were rhombus-shaped with dark, insides, and his nose was red. She pulled out her Pokédex and scanned her newly evolved dark type:

Mightyena, The Bite Pokémon. The final evolved form Poochyena. Mightyena travel and act as a pack in the wild. The memory of its life in the wild compels the Pokémon to obey only those Trainers that it recognizes to possess superior skill

Type: Dark

The opposing canine leaped at her newly evolved Pokémon. With an open mouth, his jaw latched onto his neck as he swung sideways. Dragging her pure dark type with the momentum, the two ended up in a scruff. Rolling across the ground.

Flames burst out of the closed mouth of the fire dark type but her own dark type forced it closed with his power. His own fangs foamed with dark type energy.

Biting down on scruff of his opponent's neck. He strengthened his stance and sent the hell hound flying into a nearby rock.

Leaping up, he dived down into a new hole in the ground. She turned her attention to their opponent.

Houndoom's legs wobbled violently as he struggled back onto his feet. The ground beneath him cracked and her pure dark type shot out. Sending their opponent flying, he scrapped against the rocky ground. Landing sideways with swirls in his eyes. A red light engulfed the dark Pokémon.

A series of syrones sounded but she barely got a glimpse. Being hit by a massive weight, she landed on her back. While her newly evolved canine Pokémon stood over her, with his tongue hanging down. His ticklish tongue running across her face in a show of affection. She couldn't help but laugh at his antics, while always affectionate and playful, being so much bigger is like another level.

After whom knows how long, he got off her. She coughed slightly from all the laughing, she pushed herself up into a sitting position.

She looked around and found a couple squad cars behind the gang of grunts with officers dressed in black uniforms putting them in cuffs. The Pokéballs being placed in some sort of special, see-through case. Continuing to glance around, she saw Brock talking with officer Jenny, as a nurse Joy tended to her arm. A man in a similar black uniform, with a large cape and fiery red hair stood with them.

As she stood back up, her brother and Sakura joined her side, "you guys know who that is?"

"It's Lance," her brother sighed, "he's one of Kanto's elite four and a member of the G-Men. He even showed up at the millennium carnival."

"Alright, no-it-all," she rolled her eyes.

"He's the one leading the case against aqua and magma," Sakura replied, "I'm surprised you haven't seen him on the news coverage."

"I try not to get sucked into the politics," she dismissed.

Watching the trio continue to converse, she couldn't help but feel her cheeks heat up a little. Being in both the elite four and G-Men police force really shows off a commanding presence. Shaking her head, she flicked her eyebrow up in confusion.

Lance turned around in a rush, his cape billowing in the wind. With a red light, a giant orange, winged Pokémon materialised. He ran up and leaped onto it's back with them shooting off into the sky. She might've thought Pidgeot was quick before, but a sonic boom blew past her as the powerful trainer disappeared among the clear sky.

She blinked... not quite believing what she just witnesses. A little star-stricken if she's being completely honest.

Ash dived as he held Corphish close to his body. A bolt of electricity flew past him and scorched the ground where they once stood.

Without missing a beat, he recalled the pure water type to his Pokéball and attached the device back to his belt. Looking up, he saw the Probopass from before and a new Pokémon. It sort of resembled Wattson's Rotom but also different... but now wasn't the time to dwell.

"Pikachu!" he shouted.

His electric starter dived up behind, swinging his tail down on top of the new opponents head. It glew white with an orange tint.

Leaping over the downed opponent, he curled up into a ball. Electricity surrounded him, with a massive bolt shooting off. It struck the rock steel type.

Landing right in front of the compass Pokémon. The electricity stopped and the original opponent fell back.

"Behind you!"

Turning on his heel, he fell to the ground. Shooting off like a bullet, he smashed straight into the Rotom's gut. Sending the part electric type flying back. He turned to see it disappear in a red light. A young girl walked up, holding the Pokéball that it disappeared into.

"The professor... sent me to ensure our project goes ahead as planned," she informed, the cut-up speech and monotone giving off a robotic impression. She turned towards the large man with a small smile flicking on her lips, but only for a second, "your welcome, Tabitha."

"I don't need your help," the man scoffed, switching devices, "go back to your test tubes and Mr Grey."

"You haven't even eliminated the bird yet," she deadpanned, flicking her wrist and a large, tall, bipedal Pokémon with flaming hands appeared, "Blaziken, track an exterminate."

The large fire type took off in a sprint. With impressive speed, Pikachu launched a thunderbolt, but it effortlessly dodged to the side, leaping over them.

"Pidgeot!" he called out, "looks like you've got company. Keep it busy please!"

He turned around to see his female bird taking off. Performing an aerial roll to the side, narrowly avoiding the flaming opponent.

"Now to deal with the intruder," she instructed. With a flick of the wrist, a red light flashed out.

Casting a shadow over him a large, black Pokémon which resembled a mud statue with two stubby legs. It had a wide, spherical head with a rounded protrusion on top. Around it's head were many large, pink eyes with yellow, beak-like protrusions between each. A wavy, white rim runs along the upper edge of the eyes. Their torso had white ring markings, each with a downward extension and yellow dot in the middle. With spherical arms with rounded protrusions pointing down. They weren't attached to the body but were floating close by. He quickly flicked out his Pokédex to scan it:

Claydol, The Clay Doll Pokémon. The final evolved form of Baltoy. Claydol is an enigma that appeared from a clay statue made by an ancient civilization dating back twenty-thousand years. This Pokémon shoots beams from both its hands

"Dibs!" Taillow declared, shooting out of her own Pokéball. He stared at her as his normal flying charged at their opponent.

While hardly an ideal match up, she certainly has a knack for dealing with bigger Pokémon... and she's his only Pokémon who hasn't battled yet.

Several rocks levitated around the ground psychic type. Orbiting around their opponent, his female bird skilfully swooped around the boulders.

As she skimmed the top of the clay doll Pokémon, her wings glew with a metal coating. Slicing the top of the protrusion on top.

Circling back around, she went around the front. The floating arms slowly raised and flashed. A beam shot out of each of them, and the fully evolved Pokémon spun in place. With one of the beams quickly engulfing his blue-feathered bird.

It came to a stop... Taillow flopped down on the ground, covered in burn marks. Swirls replacing her eyes.

"I expected much better to be honest," Pikachu muttered, as he recalled her, "a little anti-climactic really."

A thick black smoke surrounded the back of the large Pokémon. Floating beside him, a Weezing appeared with Tabitha behind, a smug-sinister grin on his face. With a heavy sigh, he turned towards his starter.

"Mind keeping them busy?" he asked.

"Fine... but it'll go on your tab," he snarked, "and a little heads up... I don't know how much grass knot will do to this thing."

Charging off from his position, he ran up a rock sticking out of the ground. With a leap, he spun and coated his tail in metal.

"I've got an idea to stop it," he explained, "but we need to get things in place!"

His starter struck the top of the pure poison type. Using it as a launching pad, he went flying towards the clay doll Pokémon.

The two arm attachments raised up. A bright flash appeared at their tips.

He curled up and launched a thunderbolt off at one of the arms. Striking the hyper beam as it shot out of the limb, it caused a fiery explosion. Blowing the ground psychic type back, he dived straight down, disappearing into a hole in the ground.

"Crush it with earthquake already!" Tabitha shouted.

"We can't," Courtney countered, "it would cause a chain reaction. Possibly cause a pre-mature eruption or disrupt the path to expansion."

"You're trying to erupt a volcano!" he cried out. Slowly walking back-sideways as he took out a Pokéball in hand.

"Of course," the purple-haired girl blinked, "we need to expand into the future."

"Your insane!"

Cracks appeared under the pure poison type. His starter shot up underneath but dived to the side. A pillar of red-lava spewed out behind him.

Covering the poison gas Pokémon, he began to glow bright white within the eruption. Seeing the chance, he held the device out.

"Psybeam!"

In a flash of light, his psychic fairy type reappeared on the field. She landed on one bent knee; arms thrusted out. A multicoloured beam shot out, striking the exploding Pokémon. Blowing him into the clay doll Pokémon as the two were engulfed by the explosion.

"Who da mon!" Pikachu struck a pose with widespread arms.

"Pretty sure I made the killing blow... for Claydol at least," Kirlia retorted.

"I about burnt my tail off," he mumbled, "just give me this one."

A few flashes of lights followed through. While the two defensive battlers were gone once more, two more Pokémon appeared. One being a Camelrupt, and the other was a large, vaguely humanoid, red-and-yellow-striped Pokémon with an egg-shaped body. It had pink lips on it's dark face. With yellow, tubular arms, a black band on both and three small claws on the black part of each hand. Its legs were surprisingly small in proportion to its body with pink thighs, red feet, and black shackles around the ankles. It had one large yellow flame on its head, as well as large red flames on its shoulder's and tail. Additionally, it had four pink spikes on its back. He pulled out his Pokédex to scan it:

Magmortar, The Blast Pokémon. The final evolved form of Magby. Living in the crater of a volcano has caused this Pokémon's body to resemble its environment, it has an organ similar to a magma chamber. Its internal flame is believed to burn over three-thousand-six-hundred-degrees.

"Oh, come on!" Pikachu cried out, "another ground type!"

"So much for being the starter and our superior," Kirlia smirked, arms crossed, with a snide tone.

"I'm just tired of all the ground types," Pikachu sighed, "don't we have a white flag we can wave or something?"

"Pikachu! We can't just give up and let erupt this volcano!" Ash cried.

"Fine," he sighed, standing back up. Walking up to the two new opponents, "alright listen up you two. The original Superman films called; they want Lex Luthor's evil plans back."

Pidgeot spun to the side, spreading her wings. Flapping them to gain some height, she watched the fire type jump right beside her. Feet burning bright red with flames. Watching her opponent run across the ground, she had to admit he had some speed.

Slowing her speed, she saw him jump at a rock pillar. He turned and leaped off, flying straight up to her.

Flapping her wings, she pushed herself back. A wind blew past as her opponent shot straight up past her.

Turning around, she used her wings to remain airborne, whilst still in place. She watched as the fire fighting type reached his apex.

His feet burst into flames. Thrusting them down, a series of fire balls shot down over her.

Ducking out of the way, she entered a steep fall. Stretching her wings, she used gravity to pick up speed as one of the fireballs struck her back.

Spinning around, she used the wind to extinguish the flames. Glancing back, she saw Blaziken falling down headfirst. Fire balls racing against him.

Looking back, she saw the ground closer than she expected. Flapping down to avoid a crash landing, she came to a stop a foot from impact.

Swirls of flames surrounded her. Landing on the ground, she flapped her limbs, sending a powerful wind out. Blowing an opening within her heat-prison, she saw a fiery foot come down. Raising her wings up, she intercepted the blaze kicks as her opponent bounced off, landing right in front of her.

Flexing his wrists, flames bursts round them. Charging forward, he went straight in to punch her.

Using one wing to block, she jabbed her second one forward. It struck his gut, causing him to stumble backwards.

With an opening, she slammed her first wing down. Throwing a heap of sand up into his face. He covered his face to try and clear his vison.

Knocking him sideways, he fell into the ground. With a leap, she trapped his leg in her talons. Flapping her wings, she took off from the ground.

Gaining as much altitude as possible with speed, she glanced back. A stream of flames shot out and forced her forward without control.

Putting as much strength behind her flaps, she struggled to keep control of their flight. A fiery fist struck her leg, causing her to let go.

Her opponent quickly grabbed her leg as she entered a more streamlined path. Swinging around, he used the momentum to flip onto her back. Entering a barrel roll, she felt him grasp onto her feathers and skin. Clearly, he wouldn't be able to get frown off so easily.

Entering a steep dive, she spun around. Her vison became obscured by a vortex of flames. Despite breathing them in front, gravity had it backtrack over her.

Although they were transparent. Seeing the ground, she felt him shift weight. Opening her wings, she spun and knocked him off balance.

Crushing her opponent into the ground as she landed directly on her back. The flames dispersing from around them.

Rolling off, she weakly pushed herself. Catching the sight of him flat out on his back. Smirking to herself, she rolled her wings around.

His eyes burst open, and he weakly stood up. Locking eyes with him, the two of them stood opposite each other. While they're on opposite sides of this conflict, she had to admire his proess. This has been the most fun she's had battling in a long time. Those at the lab are pretty boring if she's honest.

Seeing him smirk. He took a deep breath, leaning forward with a series of flames shooting out of his mouth. Striking her chest.

While certainly hot, fire types seem to make up the majority of her opponents recently. Whether testing the ace of Ash's Johto roaster. An aerial lesson for either her teammate Charizard or the one apart of her trainer's brother team or even a race against Rapidash. Flames hardly bother her now.

Energising from the heat, he threw herself forward. Smacking her wings together, they glew white. Direct on his head from both sides.

The flames stopped with a dazed expression on his face. Smirking, she performed a rolling kick straight into his gut. Knocking him onto his back.

Seeing her opponent down, she dropped her posture. Using her wings to support herself, she breathed heavily, glancing back up the mountain... Ash and the others would be alright if she took a minute or two, right?

As her eyes battled to close, she saw some sort of explosion at the summit. A loud bang echoing down... with a heavy sigh, she tried to will herself back up.

"It's always something with these boys," she muttered to herself... although being honest, she wouldn't have them any other way.

Serena clutched the Ultra Ball in her hand as the blue dragon came flying backwards. A fire ball skidded across the ground, stopping beside her. Revealing the newest team member in her roster. Lying flat on her back, swirls filled her eyes with burn marks and flame surrounding her body.

With a heavy sigh, she quickly recalled her. Clipping the device back to her belt, she glanced over to the turtle Pokémon.

Believing him to be similar to a Wartortle, just fire instead of water. She ran through her remaining team members. While none of her team are particularly good here, she still has experience on her side. Swiping her eldest partner's device, she held it out. Sylveon materialised right in front of her.

Instantly, she saw something wrong. Her pure fairy type had drooped eyes and her feelers dragged against the floor. With heavy pants emphasising her uneven breaths. Her front paws stumbled forward as she almost fell over.

"Sylveon," she mentally connected to her partner, "are you feeling alright?"

"I'm-"

A stream of flames shot passed her. Throwing her hands forward, she blocked the incoming attack. Two separate streams blew to either side of them.

Swinging her head, the fairy type eeveelution formed a white ball with pink tints. Launching it down, it blew through the flames.

Their opponent dived back into his shell. The moonblast struck the top and knocked them back, spinning around.

Speeding up the spin, the pure fire type shot towards her. Sylveon's feelers moved into intercept. Knocking the coal Pokémon into the air.

Torkoal emerged from his shell. Using his body weight, he redirected his path downward. Slamming into the ground where her partner stood.

Sylveon leaped to the side, narrowly avoiding the body slam. She landed on her side, quickly being engulfed by a stream of flames.

Without missing a beat, she held the device up and recalled the burning fairy type. Whatever is wrong with her, she is clearly in no condition to fight... not that it makes her current situation any easier. Seeing the defensive mon take all attacks she's frown so far, maybe a strategic approach is needed.

She quickly switched her Pokéballs on her belt, "go Dustox!"

Her bug poison type appeared mid-air. A stream of flames shot passed her. Spinning to the side, she swooped underneath and shot out a multicoloured beam from her antenna's. Knocking their opponent back, cancelling out the flamethrower.

Following after the pure fire type. She released a thick purple cloud powder over him. Flying up, she turned her attention to their opponent.

Torkoal stumbled forward with a purple mark over his face. Her poison moth Pokémon looped back around, shooting out another psybeam.

Countering with a flamethrower, the two moves clashed together. A ball of energy built up within the clash.

Exploding outwards, both Pokémon went flying. With the smoke clearing, she saw both Pokémon down as a red light recalled the pure fire type. As she followed suit, returning her fully evolved poison moth Pokémon, a flash of light caught her attention. A Crobat materialised flying beside the mad scientist.

She quickly switched over her own devices and held her Pokéball out. In a flash of light, her Murkrow materialised flying straight towards them.

Clenching her fist, she felt the power seep through her veins... but she knew that unlike before, she couldn't give the bird a boost with her own ESP.

Her female bird's wings glew black with a purple outline. Just as she collided with the poison flying type, their opponent dived.

Zooming towards and away from her dark flying type, she threw her hands up. A psychic field formed around her as the bat hit the top. Bouncing up, their opponent shot straight into the sky, only picking up speed. Disappearing from sight with the sun in the sky.

"Set up a feather dance!" she instructed.

Stopping mid-air, the darkness Pokémon spun in place. A series of feathers coated her as a blur shot down. Tackling her into the ground, Crobat appeared.

With purple fangs shooting out of his mouth, he slammed them down on her. His wings glew white and he double slapped her. Knocking her into a rock.

She pulled out her Pokéball and recalled her dark flying type. The poison-bat shot back by his trainer with a menacing glare.

Switching the devices, she quickly realised how many options she was down too. None of her three remaining Pokémon have a proper advantage over Crobat and have all battled already. Realising she still has an option left, she pulled out her Pokédex to scan through her lab actions.

"Enough with these games," the magma scientist scoffed, "immobilise her, Crobat."

She dropped the device and raised her hands, the poison flying type charging at her. She saw the dark foaming fangs as the impact on her psychic shield hit.

Biting down on the force-field, he forced a hole. Entering, she dropped down with an ear-piecing screech echoing around them.

Turning around, she tried to run but stumbled over her own feet. As she rolled onto her side, she saw the winged-opponent swipe the big wings around.

Air slashes swooped around. Sending out a wave of ESP, she felt her powers grab onto the loose bits of gravel. Raising it up, it blocked the incoming air cutters and shot towards the poison flying type. Although swooping overhead, he charged straight towards her.

Raising her arms in a cross above her head, she prepared for the impact. A white blur shot overhead.

Lowering the defensive stance, she saw a quadrupedal, mammalian Pokémon with dark blue skin and white fur covering his body in front of her. He had ruffs of fur around both the neck and chest area. A small, dark blue oval shape on the forehead, matched the horn which stuck out, which was shaped liked a crescent-moon. The face had a feline face with an almond-shape, with red eyes and pointed small nose. A scythe like tail stock out to the back, shaped like a rigid knife. his broad feet are equipped with three claws each, and a fourth dewclaw-like spike protruded from the heel of each hind leg, and the back of the knees from the front legs. It was a Pokémon she recognized from back at the Millennium carnival,

"A-Absol-"
