Author's Note:

Here it is, a nice chill chapter in Larvaridge. We get to explore a few arcs, get some new information and just see how everyone is getting on but nothing major plot wise. This chapter is more about character arc development. We also get to experience the couple's third year anniversary. We'll still get the major date in Lilycove but that doesn't mean they can't do something here. I also want to make one thing clear, in this world I feel like trainer's mature quicker than in the real world, given the whole travelling / responsibility aspect of being a trainer. I've tried to show this through the main relationship in the story but don't worry, I've never tried to take them too far and they won't reach certain steps. We'll see one such time in this chapter where they learn of the unreadiness for certain steps. This is also the last chapter before our Hoenn arc hits one-year old. I'll explain why the break in the next chapter (which'll be posted on the one-year anniversary, March 1st 2022). Forty chapters and 404,277 words is a new record for me. Like in Johto, expect upload speed to slow as I start writing the league battles. I do this because writing so many battles in short period can be draining, leading to dull and boring matches. So, I spread it out over the later course of the arc. It also means when we get to the arc, I have a chance to recharge and not break in uploads before we start the next arc but I'm getting ahead of myself. Oh, and finally, happy single awareness day. Seemed fitting a semi-romantic chapter is uploaded on this day. Don't forget to vote in the poll, which will change with the next chapter and with that, let's begin...

Chapter Forty: Everything Changes

Ash panted as he came to a stop on the path. The view of the small mountainous town filled his view. With a smile spreading on his face, he wiped his forehead from the light layer of sweat. Turning back, he saw his three friends dragging quite a bit behind.

May had her new Spoink out, bouncing along side with the sparkling pearl under the strong sunlight. While her Clamperl rested in her arms, the trio seeming having a silent conversation, with her head bopping back and forth. She smiled and glanced between the two. If he had to guess, she was taking advantage of the psychic types ability for a mental conversation.

Max was off to the side with Brock's Mudkip resting on top of his head. With Brock slightly behind the others reading through some sort of book.

Tapping his foot against the ground, he glanced back to the town for a brief moment. Letting out a sigh, his mind filled with the image of his girlfriend sat in a centre waiting room all by herself. Arms crossed and a frown as she focused on the bright emergency symbol above the door. Closing his eyes to bring himself back to the real world, he spun back to see the trio still silently bobbing along without a care in the world.

"Come on guys, we're almost there!" He shouted.

"We're coming Ash," Brock replied with a shake of the head, putting his book away. Revealing a smirk on his face, "keep your hat on."

"The gyms not going anywhere," Max added.

"I don't think it's the gym he's so excited to see," Brock mused to the young boy. Seeing a splash of confusion over the oxford-haired boy, he smiled, "you'll understand when you're older."

Rolling his eyes at the light chatter, he turned back to the town. Bouncing on the spot, he reached up and scratched his electric partner on the top of his head and chewed on his inner cheek. It felt like forever, but they soon caught up and he shot off again back down the path. As he zoomed towards Larvaridge, a loud bang drew his attention. Turning to the source, he saw multiple fiery rocks erupt into the air, raining down over the nearby area.

Glancing at the partner on his shoulder, he sighed. Without a second thought, he took off towards the source.

"Can't Team Magma give it a break?" Pikachu asked. Leaping off his shoulder, he took off and led the way, "five minutes? That's all I ask."

He soon came to a stop as a battlefield came into view. As the fire-rocks rained down over one half of the field, he took in the clear side of the field.

A young women, probably in her late teens to early twenties, stood on one of the trainer's box. She had large red-fiery hair spread out in all directions while she was dressed in a black cropped top with a fiery orange shirt covering her eye-catching chest. Her slim flat stomach was on show with turquoise jeans.

Blinking. The image of his girlfriend appeared over her. He felt his cheeks burn. While her Hoenn outfit had her stomach on show, it wasn't as present as this women's, but he couldn't help but imagine her with that physique. Shaking his head, he turned to look on the other side of the field. A Camerupt stood in front of her facing the fiery rain, clearly having caused the attack. He sighed, releasing it was just a regular battle in process.

Standing up as the last fire rock scattered around their opponent, he took in the opposing Pokémon's appearance. A large, bulky, primate-like Pokémon stood on two legs. Most of the fur was shaggy and brown, along with the semi-circle patterning under the eyes. While their face, chest, hands, and feet were a lighter cream colour. With thick and jutting brows narrowing their eyes, with a large, flaring pink nose. Around the neck was a collar of fur that extended over the top of their head before ending in a small tuft. The large hands and feet had five-finger's and two-toes, respectively. Slamming the closed fists against their chest, let out a loud battle cry... stood behind in the opposing trainer's box was none-other than Norman.

Charging forward with closed fists on all four large limbs, he delivered a swift punch direct into Camerupt's face. A glow emitted out of the humps.

Lifting both arms up, he brought them down on the back. The fire ground type collapsed down onto the ground.

Grabbing either side, he pulled the eruption Pokémon overhead. Flinging it behind. The ape Pokémon jumped and smashed an elbow into their opponent.

Standing up over the fire ground type, he made out swirls in their eyes. The large powerful Pokémon slammed his fists into his chest with a super loud cry, stamping his feet in a frenzy. Somewhat reminding the raven-haired boy of his Primeape, who would work himself up in a similar manner. Swallowing hard at the sight, a lump of fear and excitement formed. He brought out his Pokédex and scanned it:

Slaking, The lazy Pokémon. The final evolved form of Slakoth. Wherever Slaking live, rings of over a yard in diameter appear in grassy fields. They are made by the Pokémon as it eats all the grass within reach while lying prone on the ground

Putting the device back into his pocket, he watched his friend's father walk up to his fully evolved Pokémon. Scratching him on the stomach, he blinked in amazement as the energised beast calmed down. Relaxing onto his side, while not asleep... he wouldn't be surprised to see that happen with his half-closed eyes. Heh, it was pretty similar to his Snorlax in that regard. Incredibly powerful but quick to relax.

"Thank you, Slaking," the gym leader praised, holding his Pokéball out, "you fought well like always. Now take a good rest."

"Hey! It's dad!" Max's voice echoed from beside him.

The pure normal type disappeared in a red light as the Petalburg gym leader turned towards them. Max wasted no time in charging past him, straight into his dad's arms, being lifted up into the air. He couldn't help but smile at the sight... the image of his own dad flashed in front of his eyes. Casting his eyes downward, he shuffled his feet in place and rolled his lips inside his mouth. Chewing on his inner cheek.

"Is it just me or have you gotten taller?" Norman asked.

Turning his glance upward he watched the young boy laugh joyously as his dad held him over his head, "hehehe, it's because you're lifting me dad."

"Is it? Silly me," he chuckled, putting the boy in green back down. With a warm smile on his face, he turned towards them, "Ash, Brock... good to see you again. And May, how are you?"

"I'm good dad," she mumbled from behind him.

"Where's the other girl from your group?" he asked, "Serena?"

"She flew ahead on my Pidgeot," he explained, "one of her Pokémon got sick and-"

"I get it," he nodded. With a smile resting on his face, he rustled the hair on Max's head, "well I wasn't expecting to meet you all here but I'm never one to look a gift Rapidash in the mouth. How would you feel about my accompanying you too the centre?"

"Yeah! It'll be awesome to show you what I've learnt! Brock's Slakoth even evolved" Max cheered, pausing he turned to look at the raven-haired boy, "but Ash, I thought you was going to swing by the gym first to schedule your battle."

"Right," he slapped his face, "I totally forgot."

"You forgot about the gym?" Brock asked with faked-surprise, "either the sun is getting too you or you really are missing Serena."

"Well, you won't have to go far to book in a battle," the normal type specialist explained, with a slight incline of his head to the side, "you'll find the Larvaridge gym leader right behind us."

"And here I thought ya'll forgot about me," the female trainer smirked, walking up to them. She stopped in front of him, due to her tall height he had to look up too her. Feeling his throat dry up, he attempted to swallow as she held out her hand, "Flannery."

"Newest gym leader in Hoenn," Norman added.

Inwardly frowning, he let that little tip sink in. He knew every gym leader started somewhere but this would be the first time, at least that he was aware off where the leader wouldn't be super experienced. An idea mused within his head as he watched the two interact.

"You don't need to tell 'em that," she whined, turning to face him, "your what... second newest anyway."

"Maybe but I was working in gyms back when you was learning how to crawl," he laughed, "and I've still been a leader a lot longer."

"What'cha mean?" he found himself asking.

"Dad was a gym leader back in Unova as well!" Max exclaimed, "he ran the Nacrene gym from before I was even born!"

"Why did you move to Petalburg then?" Brock asked, "if you don't mind my asking. I was just under the impression you moved to Hoenn because of a promotion to gym leader."

"No," he shook his head, "we moved because of those Plasma protests. Being a gym leader was becoming more dangerous. Luckily, President Goodshow found another gym in need of a leader but even if he hadn't... I'd have put these two before any job or gym."

He turned his head downward once more, sinking his teeth into his lower lip. With a lump in his throat, he tried to swallow. Blinking. His vision blurred with tears, but he quickly wiped them away. The thought of his brother in Unova, chasing Plasma, flooding his mind. He knew they were dangerous but to even have people around the world talking about them... maybe even more so than Rocket. He had tried to contact his brother on several occasions but at most only got a short text saying he was good but couldn't talk.

"So, Ash, you wanna book a match?" Flannery asked. Looking up, he forced his mind to focus back on the situation at hand, "tell me, how many badges do you currently have."

"Oh erm," he stuttered, mentally running numbers through his head. Extending his fingers, he went through counting each one, "twenty-three?"

"Glad to see those counting lessons are paying off," Pikachu quipped from his shoulder.

"Twenty-three?" the gym leader asked, with a quirked eye.

"I've travelled through Kanto and Johto before Hoenn," he shrugged, "as well as competing in the Orange league."

"So, your experienced?" she mused, "unfortunately, my a-team just took a nasty blow against Norman so earliest I could do is tomorrow. Say midday."

"Erm, well, actually," he stuttered, "could we do the day after that?"

"Sure," she pinched her lips together, "if you tell me why."

"Well... tomorrow is the third-year anniversary with my girlfriend and-"

"Say no more," she held her hands up, "I've got a challenger scheduled for the afternoon that day so any time in the morning will be fine. And it'll be three on three, so come prepared."

"What?!" Max cried out, "but why put off your gym battle?! You can celebrate your anniversary any time."

"Spoken like a true boy," May sighed, "like Brock said, you'll understand when your older... or on second thought maybe not."

"Come on scamp, you'll get to see the battle either way," Norman ruffled Max's hair, "and this way I'll get longer to spend with you two."

"You're staying?" May asked.

"Like I said, I'm not about to look a gift-Rapidash in the mouth," he smiled, hugging his two kids in one big hug, "and Ash, Flannery. I'd like to watch your match too. Scratch that, I would like to referee your match."

"I'm happy with that," Flannery smiled, "means I can give Hodge the morning off. I'm sure he'd like that."

"Um sure, fine with me," he replied, "but why?"

"It'll be a chance for me to see what sort of challenge I should provide," he explained, "you know, when it's my turn on the field with ya."

"The harder the better," he smiled.

"Don't take him lightly," Flannery interjected, "he might look like an old timer, but he's got some skill."

"Oh, big talk coming from the newbie," he smirked, "should we tell 'em what the final call was for our match. How you only took out two of my team."

"Only because of that dam Slaking," she replied, turning to face him, "and don't think the results between our match means anything for your match, Ash."

"Course," he smirked, "but erm, we should really get going. See you the day after tomorrow."

Leading the way off from the battle ground. All the previous thoughts slipped to the back of his head; his heart thumped harder against his rib-cage with every step. The image of a certain honey-blonde girl filling the front of his mind. Although he could hear the light chatter of his companions behind.

"So why did you come here to battle Flannery, dad?" May asked.

"I thought gym leader's only battled each other for exhibition matches to hype up the leagues," Max added.

"Those are our public matches, but nothing restricts us having fun battles," Norman explained, "we regularly challenge each other to see who's the toughest leader in the region and we even hold a yearly tourney between us all. Along with other scenario's which have us battle each other."

Shaking his head, he doubled down his pace. A stupidly wide smile taking over his lips. The image of a certain cerulean-eyed girl front of his mind.

"-I'll tell you both but for now let's just get to the centre."

Pikachu rolled his eyes as he listened to the ongoing conversation between the normal type gym leader and his kids. He'd never show it but these last few days since the confrontation atop mount chimney and learning his honey's illness have been difficult. Normally, shock make everything good, but he knew he couldn't really shock away her problems this time but without anything to do... he just felt powerless. The worst-case scenarios at the front of his head.

Entering the Pokémon centre, he chewed against his inner cheek.

"Excuse me, Nurse Joy-" his trainer panted, trying to regain his breath.

"Yes, how can I help you today?" the pink haired women asked with a friendly smile.

"Hi, I'm-erm, no. My girlfriend came her a couple days ago with her Sylveon," he stuttered, "Serena Yvonne. I was hoping-"

"You must be Ash Ketchum," she smiled, "of course, I can show you too her. She's off in a side room in the recovery bay. If I could just check your trainer's license, I'll take you around to see her."

"Oh, of course," he replied.

Reaching into his pocket he pulled out his wallet and opened it up. Pulling it out, he handed over the small plastic card. She inspected it for a moment before sliding it through a device on her counter. Typing a couple things into the desktop she handed it back with a smile.

"There. Sorry but after the announcement Lance made all of Hoenn has been put on high alert," she replied, standing up. Turning around, "Chansey. I'm just showing this trainer around to recovery. Can you handle things until I get back?"

"Rodger," the normal type nodded with a cheerful smile.

"Actually, his name is Ash. Not Rodger," Pikachu quipped as his trainer followed the nurse around the desk. He couldn't help but notice the very dirty look that the Pokémon-Nurse gave him as they passed. Despite returning with a cheesy smile, it did little to change his current thoughts.

"Do you need to make jokes about everything you hear?" his trainer whispered.

"It's part of my charm," he replied, "see. Your offensive ability is super low now."

He couldn't really follow the precise directions, other than directly behind the pink-haired human-nurse. She soon held one door open and instructed them on where to go but it didn't really matter. Glancing down the corridor, he found his trainer's girlfriend leaning on a windsil, looking into a window.

Jumping down from the shoulder, he stood on the cool, crystal-clear floor, watching his young trainer run up to the honey-blonde girl. Placing his hands on her cheeks, he pulled her into a deep kiss before she could even speak... although she was hardly pushing him off. Kicking his feet on the ground, he let out a long sigh, glancing at his wrist, he rolled his eyes before turning back to his trainer and his girlfriend's trainer. Coughing into his paw to clear his throat.

"Alright, enough is enough," he called out, "I know we're at a centre but that is not what they mean by mouth to mouth."

His trainer finally parted from the show of affection, wrapping his arms around her. They both turned to face him with dopey grins on their face... if he didn't know any better, he'd of guest they modelled them off Snorlax when watching that chocolate factory movie.

"Come on," his trainer replied, "can't you just let us be?"

"Yes, yes, you can get back to turning this place into a day care in no time-" he quipped.

"Look who's talking," he replied.

"-but in case you forgot, Sylveon is the reason she flew here in the first place," he continued, purposely ignoring his attempted jab, "so if ya'll don't mind."

"Pikachu's right-" Serena started.

"I usually am."

"-we should tell you what Nurse Joy said," she replied, "don't worry... it's nothing bad but... we should go into her side room so we can all explain."

"Why does she have a side room if it's nothing bad?" Ash asked.

"For observation. I said it wasn't bad, but it is serious," she replied, "oh and to make it easier, I'll set up a mind-link so we can all converse together."

Nodding, he followed the honey-blonde girl as she led them down the corridor to one of the side-rooms. As he stepped inside, he found a large clean medical room with a small pinned to the far wall. Light green walls and shiny sparkling floors. With a hospital bed middle of the opposing wall, sticking out. His beloved fairy type eeveelution lying down with half closed eyes. The corners of her lips flicking up for a small, weak smile.

scuttering over to the bed, he found two of her feelers reaching down. Lovingly wrapping around his body, he felt her lift him up and soon place him on the bed just next to her. Without wasting another second, he wrapped his arms around and planted a series of kisses on top of her head.

"Alright Ash, Pikachu," Serena's voice echoed in his head, "I know Sylveon wanted to be the one to say it so-"

"We're having some babies," Sylveon announced.

Blinking. He stood on the bed staring down at his beloved. His mouth went dry despite his tongue flapping around. A cold sweat slowly forming on his forehead as her words sunk in. As he stared around, he felt like he was put in a different reality.

"Some?" Ash blinked.

"Well Nurse Joy can't be certain of the number," Serena explained, "she found two eggs growing. So that's a minimum of one each. But each egg could have two or three little ones in so we can't be certain at this point of the exact number. We need to wait until the eggs are laid too figure that out."

"I thought it was one egg per Pokémon," Ash muttered.

"For some species it is, but for Eevee and especially Pikachu, large litters are more common," Serena replied, "unfortunately, due to them not being pure-bred, we can't be entirely certain of the time frame we're working with."

"What do you mean by pure bred?" his trainer asked.

"It's the term used for eggs where both parents are off the same species... or where one of them is a ditto," Sylveon sighed, "they've got the time scales for both Pichu eggs and Eevee eggs but since they're combined, it could be anywhere between with some compromise."

"Nurse Joy said she'll carry them for two to three months," Serena continued, "taking the two averages for each species for reference. Then it'll be four to five months before they hatch. And Sylveon's already made one decision regarding the birth."

"I'm having them with our little group," she declared, "you two are as much their family as myself and Pikachu. It wouldn't be right otherwise."

"W-well if you're sure," Ash stuttered, "I mean... neither of us know much about taking care off a pregnant Pokémon o-or-"

"Actually, that is another point," Serena interjected, "Nurse Joy suggested she have a stable, singular location to carry the eggs to term. We both thought the lab would be the best place for this... at least until she's ready to deliver."

"What'cha thinking?" he asked, "I mean, we don't know what adventures await on the road. Hardly stable or suitable. And I can only imagine battles and performances are a no-go as well."

"The lab," she replied, "it's everything she needs. Top end equipment and Professor Oak has experience helping Pokémon carry to term."

"I mean... it makes sense," his trainer shrugged, "but two months... even as a minimum, that's a long time."

"I know but it's for the safety of the eggs," she replied, "it's a no-brainer and we've already spoken to Professor Oak. I'm sending her over before we leave Larvaridge. It gives us a couple days to say bye to her and let them get the stuff ready back in Pallet... Heh, I think Leaf's the most excited."

"Why am I not surprised," his trainer sighed. Tightening his grip on the honey blonde girl, he rested his head on her shoulder, pecking her cheek, "it's a lot to take in... ya know. I never thought this would happen whilst we were on our travels."

"After what these two started back in the Silver conference, I knew it was just a matter of time," Serena replied, reaching her arms behind to return the weird-positioned hug, "doesn't make it any less surprising somehow."

"I almost forgot your clairvoyant," he replied.

"Well, I'm looking forward to what I've seen for our recent future and-"

"If two are going to continue like this, do you mind finding your own room," Sylveon's voice interjected, "and be careful. We're adding in who knows how many little ones too our little family. Now's not the time for you two, to do the same."

"Sylveon!" Serena exclaimed, her cheeks bursting bright red.

"She's just teasing us," Ash whispered, rubbing a hand up and down her arm, "but erm... Pikachu, you've not really said much. What'cha make of this?"

With a hard swallow, he felt a lump in his throat. All eyes turned towards him as a layer of sweat formed on his forehead. Spots appeared floating around as he fell softly onto his behind. Blinking. He stretched out each finger on his two front paws, a tingle shivering down through his body. Despite his tongue flapping around his mouth was dry. Glancing between Sylveon, Serena and his trainer. One thought stuck in his head.

"I'm gonna be a dad?"

Max beamed as he tossed the ball as hard as he could. Once they made it back to the centre, Ash had already ran off and his dad handed over most of his team to Nurse Joy. Heading out back, he released the family Linoone and they started playing fetch.

"So, kids," he smiled, "I've got something to tell you."

"What's up dad?" May asked. She moved beside him, her Beautifly sat on top of her head, Swablu on one shoulder and Minun on the other. Spoink bounced by their feet as Skitty ran around with Linoone. Clamperl sat calmly in her hands as their dad crouched in front of them.

"Firstly, I need you two to promise me something," he replied, "what I'm about to say is top secret. Hardly anyone knows about it. And it needs to stay that way for the time being."

"Is this about you and mum?" May asked, "is that why you're all the way out here?"

"No, it's not to do with us... not directly, at least," he smiled, holding his hand out with his pinkie wiggling, "but I do need you both to promise me."

He felt himself and locked his finger with him. The two shared a hard stare. As their little gesture ended, their dad turned to look at his sister. She rolled her eyes but smiled, "you two are such dorks. But yeah, I promise. So come on, tell us already."

"Alright," he smiled, a light chuckle in his voice, "a member of the elite four is retiring. Don't ask who, I don't know, and the league association want to leave it secret."

"I bet it's Drake," he smirked, "he's been in the league forever. "

"Not quite but he is the second oldest so it's a good guess," he smiled, "but with one of them going, they need to get a replacement lined up."

"You're in the running for an elite four position?!" he exclaimed, a wide smile erupting over his face.

"Whoa, whoa, calm down scamp," he replied, ruffling his hair, "what happened to keeping it secret."

"Wouldn't the league winner be the one to replace them?" May asked.

"No way," he interjected, jumping up.

His sister looked down for the briefest of seconds before rolling her eyes, crossing her arms. With a deep breath she turned back towards their dad, "so how did you get into the running for the position?"

Their dad smiled, turning to stare at the sky, "a league winner has the right to challenge the champions league but it's not the same process. After all, their matches are heavily favoured in the challenger's favour being five against six without subs on one side. Hardly a fair challenge to find someone on the elite four level."

"If you say so," his sister rolled her eyes.

"How could you be so nonchalant about this?" Max asked, "it's been a secret to the general public how the league fill their spots in the elite four."

"Because I've never been that interested in your little dorks club," she replied, "but still. It would be nice if you got the spot, dad."

"So, what do you need to do, dad?" he asked.

"Firstly, anyone competing for the spot needs an endorsement by a current members of the regions champions league. Sydney did me the honour," he explained, "that limits it to six potentials but not everyone nominated takes up the chance. Along with possible repeats, since they don't discuss their nominations prior, it's very uncommon for six different trainers to all compete."

"Why six?" his sister asked, "the elite four and champion only make five nominations."

"There's also President Goodshow, he can pick one regardless of the region," he smiled, "as long as they're apart of the P.L.A, of course."

"So, who are you competing against?" he asked.

"Theirs currently only three members competing," he replied, "both others are gym leaders. One being the Foretree gym leader, and the other is from Kalos but is a gym leader in Sinnoh. Although I'm not too worried about her, if I'm honest."

"Why not," May asked.

"Because she specialises in ghost types and-"

"And we already have a ghost type elite four member in Phoebe," Max interjected, "and they'd never put two type specialists of the same type in the same champions league. So, unless Phoebe is the one retiring-"

"Know it all," May mumbled.

"Calm down, Max," their dad insisted, "but he's right. It has happened before but it's far from common."

"So, what happens?" May asked, "how do you actually become a member of the elite four?"

"I've got to beat the gym's champion league," he replied. Quirking an eyebrow up, he pinched his lips together, "it's the code for each gym leader's strongest line up. In theory, they should all be on the level of an elite four member, with gym leader's getting far more chances to battle. With some newer gym leader's like Flannery today, they just aren't quite that level while others are far surpassed it. Overall, it evens out."

"What about the Foretree gym leader?" May asked, "I guess when you face them, it'll decide which of ya'll will win."

"Not quite," he shook his head, "other competing gym leaders are the acceptation to who we need to battle. Once we've each completed the gym leader's champion teams, those remaining will battle it out with the current elite four, make sure they're up to it. They each need to be able to beat at least one member in a fair battle. Should that not narrow it down, then the remaining members battle it out."

"And the winner of that gets the job?" he asked.

"No," he sighed, "a panel of judges, usually the president, current champion and trusted trainer outside of champion's league. Basing it not only off the battling ability but overall experience and demeanour. As well as how well they mesh with the other elite four. They don't want four carbon copy trainer's."

"Sounds like tough completion," his sister mumbled, "but I guess the best of luck. How many other gym leader's do you need to face?"

"I've gotta face Mauville, Mossdeep and Sootopolis but I'm saving that one until last," he nodded, "that leader was the favourite to win."

"But no one picked him?" Max asked.

"No, two people did," he smiled, "but he decided not to compete. Something about being happy in his role as gym leader."

"Heh, in that case, it could be only one person gets nominated," May mused, "they'd have a pretty easy ride with it."

"It's possible, I guess," he mused, "but I've never heard of such a situation. It's why they like a diverse squad in the champion's league. Everyone picks a different nominee that way. Along with other reasons, of course."

"So, who else knows about it?" he asked.

"Members of the league and the other gym leaders, of course," he smiled, "I can't be certain who Winona has told but I've only told your mother and you two now. Brock sort of knows but I haven't confirmed it, plausible deniability, and all that. But enough about that, why don't ya'll show me what you've both learnt on your journey so far?"

"Thanks Dad but I've got some training to do," she replied, "after Larvaridge we're heading back to Petalburg but passing through both Verdanturf and Rustboro, so both Serena and myself can compete. We need to be ready for that contest."

"Then maybe I could be your sparring partner," their dad suggested, "I might not be a coordinator, but I've learnt a thing or two from your uncle Ruby."

"How is Uncle Ruby?" he asked, "it feels like forever since we last saw him, or Aunt Sapphire for that matter."

"They're good, working in the contest circuit up in Kalos," he smiled, "maybe they'll be able to visit for either the league or grand festival."

"Sure, I could always use a training partner," she smiled, "I'm planning on using Skitty for the battle. And since, ya know, normal is your speciality-"

"Of course, anything for my little girl," he smiled, "and Max, think you could keep Slaking entertained? I doubt he blew off enough steam with that last battle. And also keep an eye on Linoone, ya know how he can be."

"Awesome!"

He blinked awake as he rolled over. His arm was pinned and so couldn't move fully. With his eyes adjusting to the light, he found Serena lying down on his side. A stupid wide smile formed on his face as he leaned over. Slowly rolling her over underneath him, he nuzzled his head into the crook of the neck.

"Wakie, wakie," he whispered. A joyous giggle tickled his ear. Fresh pair of lips pecking his neck, "happy anniversary."

"I've missed this sort of wake up the last few days," she mumbled, ekansing her arms around his bare chest. Moving one leg over, she held the quilt up to make it easy. Straddling her, he leaned down and pecked her lips a couple times, "happy anniversary."

He leaned down and entered a deeper kiss with eyes closed. Her hand travelled down his chest, landing on his original scar from Sandslash. Peaking one eye open, he glanced to the bed-side table which had his backpack leaning against it. Carefully reaching over, he snuck his hand inside and pulled out a wrapped rectangle shaped present. Sliding it between them, he delivered a couple more kisses before pulling back. Their eyes locked together as she fell into the bed.

"I know we've already agreed to properly celebrate when we get to Lilycove but-"

"I think we're on the same page," she whispered, "after I dropped Sylveon off with Nurse Joy when I first arrived, I wondered around the town and found something we could do. I thought today could be our more... intimate, day. While we have the more big day event stuff when we get to Lilycove."

"Hmm," he leaned down, pecking her lips a couple more times, "I think I could live with that. I get more time with you; how wouldn't I be happy with it?"

"If it was up to you, we'd spend the entire day in this bed," she giggled.

"Would that really be such a bad thing?" he asked, leaning his forehead against her. Rubbing his nose against her's.

"-but before you see where I've booked for us. I get to open this," she smiled, holding the rectangular box.

She carefully picked up the book with her ESP. Not wanting to wiggle around too much whilst trying to undo it. Hovering it to the side, she used her powers to effortlessly rip off the paper. It was a small handbook as it floated back into her hands. The paper flew over to the bin on the far side of the room.

"Y-you know about the training manual, TM," he stuttered, "the book series dedicated to helping trainers teach their Pokémon new moves."

"This is the book on miracle eye," she replied, "where did you get this?"

"Well... I know you've been worried about when Pupitar or Cacnea evolve and become dark type," he replied, "and I know not being able to communicate with Murkrow has been tough on both of you."

"Alakazam-"

"I know," he replied, "he's been trying to learn it since before we traded just to teach you... but this way, you might be able to teach him instead. I know the actual technical machines don't work on people, so this felt like the next best thing."

"Thank you," she replied. Using her ESP to put it on top of the bed side table. She raised her arms and wrapped them around his neck. Locking her lips around his, she pulled him into a deep kiss. Return in kind, he wrapped his own arms around her waist. He wasn't sure how long it was until the need for air took over, but he knew it was too soon, "now if you don't mind, I need a shower, but I've got a full day planned for us. Oh, and pack your swimming trunks."

"It's still early," he mumbled, rolling to the side as she sat up.

He blushed as he realised the black night shirt was riled up slightly, revealing her lower back. He felt his cheeks heat up at the sight and felt his heart thump harder against his chest. While she was always slim, he couldn't help but appreciate the curves forming on her lower body.

"It is but we've got a big day together," she smiled, standing up and walking over to the "I won't be long. Just make sure you're ready to go. And remember, swimming trunks."

"Huh?" he blinked with a slight dazed expression, pushing himself up, "but we're no-where near the beach or anything."

"You'll see," she smirked, with a sing-songy tone. Disappearing into the adjacent bathroom.

Running his hand over his face, he blinked a few times. With controlled breaths, he felt the heat drop from his cheeks. Shaking his head, he stood up and began putting together his things for the day. When getting dressed, he decided to just wear his swimming shorts and put his dry, clean clothes into his backpack. Sitting back on his bed, he took out his five Pokéballs, deciding on the team best to use against Flannery.

While one of his choices was easy. He had an idea he wanted to test, given what he learnt about Flannery from their brief interaction. The question was if his given team could pull it off convincingly. Obviously, he only had one option for type advantage, so he'd need something else.

The sound of the door opening drew his attention. Serena walked out in black leggings and a white tank top. He swallowed hard, taking in her appearance fully as she slung her own backpack onto one shoulder. Rolling his Pokéballs into his bag, he stood up and grabbed his own bag. Walking over to her, she quickly engulfed his hand with her's. She quickly pulled him along and they left the room, locking up behind.

"So, we can grab a light breakfast from the canteen, but I want to get Sylveon something to eat before we set off," she explained, "then we'll be off for the main event for today. Maybe go for a nice walk around the outskirts of town before going to this nice little cafe I saw for tea."

"Sounds great," he smiled, leaning into whisper, "but aren't you forgetting something?"

"I don't think so," she replied.

"You made a big deal about me remembering my swimming gear," he whispered, "but I didn't see you pack yours."

"It's because I'm wearing my bikini underneath my clothes," she whispered back. He presumed his cheeks burned bright red as a sweat poured down his forehead and his throat dried up. Her giggling voice not helping as she tightened her grip on his arm, "get those sorts of thoughts out of your mind mister. We are not going into the gutter for our anniversary."

Shaking his head, he did his best to shake off his embarrassment. Why does she tease him like this?

Pikachu walked up and down the corridor, next to the door which led into the room Sylveon waited in. He might've spent the night in there with her, but he woke up first. Scurrying along to the sink, he washed his face and paws. When he noticed her stir in sleep, he quickly exited through the door. Collecting a bowl of her favourite fruit which currently sat within his hands. He learnt Serena was planning on getting her morning meal, but he beat her too it.

With a hard swallow, he glanced outside to the sunny skies shining through the window. Closing his eyes, he pictured his little brother, back when he was still a Pichu. The night he tried to lead their father away and ended up running over to Kanto storming through his head. Serena stepped out of the door.

"There you go, Pikachu," she smiled, "we'll be back to check on you both later. But I've got plans for Ash for most of the day. Brock might come to visit but I think both May and Max are spending the day with their dad. Keep her safe for me, alright?"

He nodded and gave a thumbs-up as she quickly skipped down the corridor. Shaking his head, he turned and pushed himself through the door. His beauty laid peacefully on the bed with half-closed eyes. A small smile covered her lips as the feelers lowered down. One took the bowl from his hands as two more wrapped around his body. Gently being lifted up back onto the bed.

"You could've waited until I actually woke up to get breakfast, ya know," she glanced up to him, "if Serena wasn't here, I might've gone walk abouts to see where you went."

"You need to rest, and I didn't leave until I saw Serena arrived," he insisted, "I just needed to get some air."

"Just because I need light duties doesn't mean I'm bound to this bed," she replied, "I would've liked to go for a walk too. Maybe smell the flowers."

"Yeah, we can do that later today. For sure," he smiled, picking up a slice of leppa berry. She gladly took it in her mouth and began to chew, "but eat first. You'll need your strength."

"You worry too much," she replied, "did you get something to eat as well?"

"I will later," he dismissed, "but it's more important you eat... for yourself and them."

"As long as they don't get your obsession for ketchup, I think they'll be fine," she replied.

"Hey!" he whined, "it's a completely normal, healthy-"

"Addiction."

"I wouldn't call it that," he replied, feeding her another piece of leppa berry, "but you do need to keep your strength up. The same will go at the lab."

"And I'll have Oak and his little squad of assistances," she replied, "not to mention, Kangashkan and the other sister's."

"Sisters?" he blinked.

"It's the girls of Serena's squad," she smiled, "Ampharos, Quilava, Tangrowth, Delphox. A bunch of us consider ourselves sisters. I'll be in good hands, or paws or even flippers... and you're not even convinced, are you?"

"I'm sure they're good and will take care of you but-" he cut her off.

"Here we go," she rolled her eyes.

"Just consider it, you've got me, Ash, Serena and even Brock here," he reassured, "we're just as good-"

"Without the right equipment and being miles from civilisation on a regular basis," she replied, "it's just for two months. Until I'm ready to pop."

"But-"

"I've already made my decision, and this is my best option," she replied, "I know you want us to stick together like a family but-"

"We might not agree but I'm not going to argue," he sighed, "I'm not going to put up any more stress on you. It's just a tough decision to make."

"It's not a tough decision, it's the one that's best for our kids," she replied, "too me, that makes it the simplest decision in the world."

"I suppose your right," he let out a small smile, "just erm, don't tell the kid alright. He's got the gym battle tomorrow and I don't want him distracted."

"What are you talking about?" she asked, as he feed her the next piece of leppa berry.

"Nothing, just ignore me," he shook his head. Placing the bowl down, he moved down, closer to her stomach, "may I?"

Receiving a small nod from his girlfriend as she picked up an oran berry with a feeler. He smiled as she popped the blue berry into her mouth. He took a deep breath and placed an ear next to her stomach. With his paw also being placed on her slightly swelled belly.

"You won't feel anything," she replied, "they don't start kicking until the eggs are close to hatching. And I need to lay them before that."

He didn't really care about that. Even if science said otherwise, he could feel the life of his children within her stomach. Closing his eyes, he leaned in closer, taking a deep breath. Feeling his heart swell, he made a silent promise to his unborn children. To always be there for them, no matter what.

He closed his eyes as the strong fighting type hands rubbed into his back. With a relaxed sigh, he looked up at the massage spa that Serena booked for their anniversary. She was on an opposing bed, a Machoke performing the same karate chop technique on her back. Beside them he saw a black-barbeque with a Slugma slivering across the top. He knew the hot rocks were on option, but he opted not to join in. He couldn't imagine them being relaxing on his back.

Vibrations echoed across his body and the fellow fighting type delivered a swift series of karate chops across his back. Sighing in relief, his voice scuttered with the actions. They already tried out the sandbathe which was a pretty weird experience considering everything.

Time passed as he zoned in on nothing else. The expect Pokémon hands relaxing every muscle in his back. What he wasn't expecting was the sudden weight on his back. Opening his eyes once more and looking back, he found Serena straddling him. She was still in the same outfit from before and he was glad he was lying down. With her attractive outfit and current position, things could become very awkward if he laid on his back.

"How do you like this place?" she asked.

"It's great," he smiled, pushing the prior thought out of his head, "the sandbathe with nearby Numel was weird but the massage-"

"Well, it's funny you mention the massage," she smiled, "it's part of our anniversary gift. Something to share."

"What is?" he asked. With a silent command, she lifted herself slightly. Knowing what she wanted him to do, he spun and ended up lying on his back and she returned to the straddling position. Their hands locking together.

"When I booked our visit today, I picked up their self-published book," she smiled, "it's back in our room. I didn't want to show you and spoil this place."

"So, what's this book about?" he asked

Instead of answering, she jumped off the bed and dragged him along with one hand. Following the signs on the wall, he didn't need to guess where they were going next. She booked a three-hour trip with one for the sandbathes, one for massage and the last one for the hot tubs. From what he saw, there were also extensive gyms and swimming pools, but she picked three activities that were more personal.

It didn't take long for them to find their way into the hot-tub room. Rows of small circular hot-tubs were spread out. Some had people already in but not nearly all of them. Walking over to the desk, the assistant scanned their pass and pointed out the changing cubicles, along with which tub would be their's.

Going inside the cubicle, it didn't take him long to change into his swimming-shorts since he already had them under his jogging bottoms. Stepping out of the cubicle, he found Serena already in her jet-black two-piece bikini. He swallowed hard as he took in her full appearance. Soon she dragged him over to the hot tub and they climbed inside. She wrapped his over her shoulder and cuddled up within the warm water.

"This place is amazing," he mumbled.

She reached behind and played with the dial pad. The water warmed up with jets of water blowing up through the water, creating bubbles around them. He couldn't stop the smile from growing on his face as she connected their lips, which he was more than happy to return the gesture.

"Today just keeps getting better," he mumbled, leaning his forehead against hers. He pecked her lips a couple more times, "so what's that book about?"

"Mostly about how the different stuff works and it's benefits," she explained, "but I was more interested in the things about how to do proper massages."

"Uh huh?" he hummed, closing his eyes, and leaning back. The warm water enveloping his body as he felt his girlfriend rest up against him.

"I know from time to time we try to give each other a relaxing time but this way we can learn how to do it properly," she replied, ekansing her arms around his chest and back, leaving a trail of kisses from his shoulder up to his lips, "but I've also got something else to try out for our anniversary... the next step in our relationship."

"Okay, what are you thinking?" he asked, as she pecked his lips some more.

He turned to look at her with rosy, pink cheeks. Part of him felt like it could've been the hot spring water, but he also wasn't that dense anymore. She giggled and leaned in close, whispering, "just follow my lead, 'kay."

She didn't wait for his answer as she connected their lips once more. He tried to keep up with her enthusiasm, but she was far more aggressive, as her arm snuck up around his neck. He wasn't surprised by her deepening the affectionate make-out. With his lips following her's, he soon found both of them wide open as she continued to lean in. His eyes opened and glanced around at her face with closed eyes. Darkening red cheeks colouring her face.

He was ready to pull back but froze as he felt her tongue poke against his. His heart stopped and a cold sweat formed on his forehead. Her eyes slowly opened, and she pulled back. Wiping the small trail of saliva away as his lips trembled, closing up. With a hard swallow. His heart thumped against his ribs.

"Th-that was, erm, something," he stuttered.

"You didn't enjoy it," she replied, the corners of her lips dipping into a frown for only a brief second.

"No, I erm-"

"It's okay," she cut him off. Placing both hands on either side of his face, "I know it's a big step. I'd be more surprised if you were ready."

"So why did you try it?" he asked, "I erm... didn't mean for it too sound that way. I-it's just-"

"Weeeeell," she rolled her eyes to the side with a cheeky grin over taking her lips. Placing a finger over his, which caused the voice to die in his throat, "it's a staple of romance books and I wanted to try it for a while. I also wanted to let you know what the next step would be sooooo-"

"When I'm ready to try it again, I could surprise you?" he guessed.

"Maybe," she winked, cuddling up closer to him, "but for now, let's just enjoy the rest of today. Tell me, how's Pikachu?"

"What'cha mean?" he asked, "just in general or after the news yesterday?"

"After yesterday," she replied, "I checked on Sylveon before we left, and she said he's been silent... real silent. I didn't know if he's said anything to you."

"No, not really," he sighed, "I think it's just taking a while to process. Ya know. The babies on the way, the months Sylveon will be at the lab. It's a big change up in a short amount of time."

"I know we made a lot of decisions before you guys arrived but-"

He cut her off with a quick peck on the lips, "hey, hey, hey. You both made the best choices and most logical. Neither of us would blame you but like I said, it is a lot to take in. I'd be surprised if neither you or Sylveon needed time to process it after finding out."

"I did," she nodded, "but Sylveon was surprisingly calm about it. I think she might've guessed before Nurse Joy's assessment."

"She didn't tell you?" he asked.

"I said guessed, not completely certain," she replied, "and she wouldn't have put the thought in my head in case she was wrong."

"True," he sighed, "but these next few months are gonna be weird. First, the time without Sylveon. Then helping deliver the eggs-"

"Well, you've cared for Togetic's and Donphan's eggs so that won't be new," she replied, "I'm more excited to see what their children will be. Pichu or Eevee, or some combination. Boys or girls. There's so many combinations, I just can't wait."

"We've got a while to go until we get those answers," he replied, "but now I think we should just enjoy the rest of our time here."

"I like the way you think," she mumbled, rolling her head into the crook of his neck.
