Author's Note:
Here it is, the second showcase. I really wish I could've put one in sooner than this but there just wasn't room. We also get to see a couple familiar faces. Expect them to show up more often as Hoenn moves along. Along with more insight to the newest addition to the traveling family. I hope you enjoy the song choice; it might not fit the character arc quite as well as the previous one but that's because this arc is still ongoing. I also went back and forth over three different songs for this performance, and I went with the one which was a combination of best suited for the main Pokémon's arc and easiest to write a performance in time with. We also get a little insight into a possible side-hobby for Serena whilst she's competing in showcases. It'll mainly be for fun when she does them, for the time being but I felt it was appropriate to introduce now. It's also my chance to give my own spin on the world of influencer's. Oh, and some more info from the newest dragon in the team. Don't forget to vote in the poll and with that, let's begin.
Chapter Forty-Four: Verdanturf Showcase: Titanium
Serena smiled as she stood on top of the diving board. A tune playing in the background. In the pool below, her Kingdra and Dewgong were swimming around whilst performing their routine. After arriving in Verdanturf, she brought together her team so they could put the finishing touches on the routine.
Hearing her cue in the song, she gave a small bounce. Spinning in the air, she dived straight down submerging into the water.
After the initial impact, she opened her eyes and saw Dewgong swimming away from her. Performing a roll, she floated back up to the surface.
Emerging, she entered a circular spin, opposing the dragon water type. Continuing on with the routine, she waited for the second cue. As it passed, she expected her newest water type to enter... but nothing. Glancing around, she found the two fully evolved Pokémon looking at her expectantly. With a deep breath, she dived under the water. Swimming deeper, she found her pure water type cowering by the floor. Closing her eyes, she sent out a weak pulse of ESP.
"What's wrong Feebas?" she asked.
"I-I-" she stuttered.
Feeling the need for air, she swam back up to the surface. Re-emerging from the water, she took a deep breath. Moving her hair out of her face, she cleared her eyes and saw the three water types floating in front of her. Dewgong and Kingdra looming over Feebas.
"Sorry," she meekly whispered.
A loud buzzer sounded, and she let out a low sigh. Knowing her time in the pool for training was up, she made her way to the edge. Climbing out, she made her way over to her things and quickly recalled her three Pokémon. Wrapping a towel around herself, she made her way into the adjacent changing rooms.
Quickly changing back into her normal outfit, she mused over the performance. It's too late to switch up the trio performing, outside of a serious medical emergency, once they are registrared, her options are locked in. She felt that the confidence issues would've passed over Feebas once they got into the real performance. When it was just the two of them, she really got her part down... so what could be happening with her now.
With her hair tied up in a ponyta-tail, she grabbed her things and made her way out of the performance hall. Being the last day before the contest, she knew she had to ensure everyone was ready. She continued down the lobby towards the exit, a voice drew her out of her thoughts.
"Oh my gosh, it's you."
"Huh?" she mumbled, turning towards the source.
She found a girl around her age dressed in a pink top with three black ribbons down the centre. Short denim blue shorts which showed off her long legs made up her outfit. Her hair was up in two ponyta-tails as she ran up with a radiant smile on her face.
"It's sooo good to see you again, Serena."
"Shauna!" she returned the bright gesture. The two embraced each other in a wide hug, "I haven't seen you since the Orange Island's grand festival. How are you."
"I'm great, Ms top coordinator," she smiled, "you really did a number in the Johto circuit."
"Thanks," she smiled, "I didn't know you kept an eye on me."
"Well after I won the Kanto circuit, I figured it wouldn't hurt to see who else joined the club," she smirked, "then I met Palermo, like the real Palermo, head of the showcase committee who suggested I give them a try. I figured after losing to her in the Orange grand festival, I'd come to Hoenn to face Lisia again."
"That was pretty similar too me actually," she replied, "Palermo was a surprise judge in the Johto grand festival and after the final... she convinced me to give them a shot, but we more so just decided on Hoenn by chance."
"I guess that means we're rivals," she replied, a specific glint in her eye, holding her hand up, "I can't wait to see what you've got to offer, Serena."
"Neither can I, Shauna, but I'd watch out," she replied, smashing her hand into hers, the two locked eyes as they tightened the embrace. Everything seemed to disappear as a roaring fire burned around them, each daring the other to blink first, "I've already got a princess key on my chain."
"That makes two of us then," she replied, as they ended their handshake. While the two certainly have competition, it's nothing like her previous rivals, "why don't you accompany back to the centre? I'm planning on making a Pokévison video for tonight before the competition.
"Sure," she smiled, and the duo started walking out of the performance hall, "but what's Pokévison?"
"There short thirty second videos performers make to build their following," she explained, "post them on to all the social media sites. Ya know, MewTube, Chatotitter and Porygram. You build a following on the sites because it's the best way to get your name out there in the showcase circuit. You're telling me you've never made one before?"
"No," she replied, "I don't really have accounts on any of those sites either. Being on the road doesn't allow for much chance to keep updated. Ya know."
"Do you really think you could win a title like showcase queen without a following?" she asked.
"Well, I did already win a princess key and against Lisia," she replied, holding her head higher slightly.
"One showcase... ever heard of beginner's luck?" she asked, "a lot of people support an underdog story but when you enter the big leagues. The Master class. That stuff just doesn't hit the mark. The battle for Hoenn queen is decided mostly before anyone steps onto the stage. It's why Lisia is the biggest name in the running for Hoenn showcase queen. You're in for a rough ride if you don't start an online persona too."
"I never needed one before," she retorted.
"And you've never competed in showcases before," she shot back, "contests... chateau's, even leagues are competitions based solely on skill. Showcases are a different thing altogether."
"I'm not-"
"Tell you what, Serena," Shauna cut her off, "how about tonight you help me record my new vid and you check out what it's about. At least get to see what I'm talking about before dismissing it completely."
"Sure Shauna," she offered a small smile.
"After all, if you're my rival then I want to be the one to knock you down in the master class rather than some behind the scenes mechanics," she smirked.
"Good luck with that," she smirked back.
The two of them locked eyes for a few seconds before bursting out laughing. Even if things could get intense when competing, they'll always be friends first and wouldn't let the end results interfere with that. As they calmed down, Serena noticed a large crowd surrounding the back battlefield of the Pokémon centre, from the direction they approached from. Glancing at her friend, they made a silent agreement and walked over to see what was going on.
"This will be a two-on-two double battle between our two trainers!" Brock's voice echoed above the crowd, "both sides have already selected their Pokémon so we won't have a time limit and the battle will be over when one side has no Pokémon able to continue... without further ado, begin!"
Making her way through the crowd, she found her boyfriend on one end of the centre's battlefield. His Duskull and Torkoal stood off next to each other as she glanced at their opponents. One being a Pokémon she recognized as a Lombre and the other being vaguely familiar to one May faced in Fallarbor.
A bipedal Pokémon shaped like a teddy bear appeared. The eyes were made of two black spirals, which seemed to point in the opposite direction of each other. Similar swirling patterns were on the ears. It was pretty small, shorter than her partner Lombre. Having stumpy arms and legs, and the coat was primarily a cream colour. The arms were red, and it had a red stripe bordering along the bottom of its belly, as well as two small spots on the soles of it's feet. Four red spots covered the face, looking like paint splodges. She pulled out her Pokédex for a quick reminder of the normal type:
Spinda, The Spot Panda Pokémon. No two Spinda are said to have identical spot patterns on their hides. This Pokémon moves in a curious manner as if it is stumbling in dizziness. Its lurching movements can cause the opponent to become confused
As she put the device away, she caught a glimpse of the trainer facing her boyfriend. He was a tall, big lad in a black shirt with brown cargo shorts. One of the same trainer's who accompanied Shauna back in her travels through the Orange islands and even competed against Ash in the Orange league.
"Why am I not surprised Tierno and Ash are battling?" Shauna asked, "although their choices are a little surprising. I would've thought it would be more of a rematch from the orange league."
"I think this is more about testing out some of the new guys," Serena shrugged, "Ash only caught Torkoal the day before last."
Turning towards the field, she saw the fire type launch out a flamethrower. It was kept at bay by a water gun curtsy of Lombre, although it was slowly pushing towards the grass water type. Duskull floated around the beams, will-o-wisps orbiting him as he charged for the normal type.
Spinda flopped around side to side, in some sort of dance. The fire balls avoided the spot panda Pokémon as the ghost continued the assault.
Swirling to the side, Lombre ended his assault. The flames spread over where he once stood as he danced around the edge of the field.
"Tor-koal!" the fire type shouted.
A dark rain cloud formed over the field. Light drizzle rained down over them as Duskull dived into the ground, creating a large dark shadow.
Zooming back, he shot up underneath the coal Pokémon. Erupting underneath, he sent Torkoal flying up through the cloud line.
Floating back over to the pure normal type, he seemed to match the spot panda move for move. Although neither side seemed focused on attacking.
A blur broke through the cloud line and Torkoal smashed through the two Pokémon. He passed through the pure ghost type harmlessly, an orange-tint around his body as he smashed into the normal type, completely flattening her.
The pure ghost type moved up out of the way. A bright white beam shot out of Torkoal's mouth. Blasting into Lombre and sending him flying.
Tierno's Jolly Pokémon smashed into a tree, with the solar beam fading. Slumping down to the base with swirls in his eyes. The fire type walked off, revealing their second opponent down as well. The two defensive battler's walking over to Ash.
"You sure he only just caught Torkoal?" Shauna asked, "he seems pretty experienced."
"Sure did," she smiled, "but he might've had a long history before we met him."
Both girls made their way over as the two boys shook hands on a good battle. The crowd slowly dispersed leaving Brock, Ash, Max and Tierno who stood around in a circle, with Ash's two Pokémon stood beside him.
"Koal Torkoal."
"It's alright Torkoal," Ash scratched him on the head, "I guess I just underestimated your experience. At least I know you can handle yourself."
"If I had known he was that tough, I would've brought Blastoise to handle him," Tierno taunted.
"We're ready for a rematch whenever," Ash replied.
"While I'd like to see more of you guys," Shauna spoke up, announcing their presence to the boys, "but can we do it inside. Maybe over lunch. We're both starved and this rain is like... ruining our hair. We've got a showcase tomorrow, remember."
"Huh?" the boys seemed to reply in unison.
"Serena!" Tierno exclaimed, leaping at her. Landing on one knee, he grasped her hand, "you're as beautiful as the day we last met."
A flash of light shot down by her feet. She blinked in surprise at the sight of her pure dragon type, who looked up to the large boy. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a glint. Moments later she shot up and smashed into Tierno's stomach. Causing him to stumble back and land on his behind.
"Erm," she uttered, not quite sure what to say. The way she acted, Bagon reminded her off Brock's Rhyhorn back before the brother figure got himself under control. She glanced around at the others for some sort of answer, but none came. Her eyes locked onto Shauna, who gave a small nod.
"Glad to see there's no objection," she smiled, pulling her male friend back up to his feet. Dragging him towards the centre, "what're you guys waiting for?"
Glancing between the others. They quickly made their ways after them. As she walked, she noticed her newest capture climbing up and resting on her shoulder. She wasn't sure what gave her the idea, but she wasn't about to tell her off. It was certainly one way to put off unwanted attention. Reaching up, she offered her a small smile, scratching her on the top of her head. Her mind thinking back to her conversation with her old friend-turned-rival.
"Hey guys, it's ya girl Shauna! Just wanna check in and see how ya'll are doing tonight! Be sure to catch me and the gang in the showcase tomorrow in Verdanturf! Ten o'clock sharp! See ya there, peace!"
Serena raised an eyebrow at the video on the screen. She had been the one to hold her phone and film but that's hardly to say she understood the appeal of this sort of thing. How many people would click on a simple, twenty second video just because a certain performer posted it. Part of her could sort of see the theory behind a sneak peek at a performance their working on or even one showing off a new team member but... this is something else entirely.
"So what'cha thinking?" she asked. Taking control of the mouse, she set the video to upload to her main social media profiles. Letting the device go, she relaxed back into her seat before turning to face her. A radiant smile embracing her entire face.
"I get the idea behind Pokévison, or at least certain types of videos," she replied, "but this... I'm sorry, it just seems silly to me."
"It did too me, at first, too, Serena," she replied, "but after I started doing it, I won my first key. I even started receiving emails from fans saying they didn't know what they wanted to do but watching me compete and following me through the showcase circuit has inspired them."
"Really?" she blinked in surprise.
"As far as I am concerned, if I can inspire or even just brighten someone's day with one of these videos then it's worth it," she replied.
Rolling her lips inside, she began to chew on her inner cheek. Her eyes darted around the girl's face for any sign of dishonesty but found none. Glancing back at the screen, they scrolled through a few more videos, seeing the comments left. Things like watching them practise has inspired them to take training seriously or even following Shauna's career has inspired them the take on the showcase circuit or contest circuit in their own region.
While she couldn't fully understand the appeal... she couldn't argue with the end results. Maybe there is something to these Pokévison videos.
"If you don't feel comfortable speaking to everyone at first, neither was I," Shauna explained, "for the first few months, all my videos were just performance practise or even little funny videos of the guys. I have one of Skitty just after I caught her, getting stuck in Venusaur's plant."
Covering her lips, she let out a small giggle. While she hasn't met that particular Pokémon of her's, she could imagine May's normal type in that situation.
"Alright Shauna... I'll consider it," she replied.
"We could film your first one tonight," she offered, "no time like the present."
"Thanks, but no thanks, if I'm gonna do it then I'll start it with me and my team," she replied, "no offence but I feel like it would feel more... meaningful."
"I totally get it," she smiled, "you do you and I'm sure it'll turn out great!"
"Thank you," she smiled, taking a deep breath of relaxation, "hey... can I speak to you about something?"
"Sure," she smiled, "what's on your mind, girl?"
"It's Tierno," she replied, "I thought we dealt with it back in the orange archipelago but-"
"If this is about his flirting then don't worry," Shauna replied, placing a hand on her shoulder, "he's like it with everyone. Heh, I remember once we we're shopping for supplies and the elderly women in front of the cue had some alcohol and he mentioned she's clearly too young."
"How are you alright with that?" she asked.
"Because he doesn't mean anything by it, it's just a way to be friends with everyone," she replied, "it's not like he's misogynistic or sexist, he does it to put a smile on someone's face. And he wouldn't try anything to cause trouble between you and Ash. It's all in good faith."
"I still don't like it," she replied, "and given what was said when we originally met..."
"If you ask him then I'm sure he won't have an issue with dialling it down," she replied, "like I said. He's a good guy."
"Sounds like you might-"
"Erm, no," she replied, "I mean. He's funny, silly and been a huge help with choreographing my dance routines but... we're both full energy. I think I need someone to chill out with, remind me to stop and smell the roses. Ya know, opposites attract and all that."
"Heh, I think that's part of the reason Ash and I work so well together," she laughed, "he was always running off and getting into trouble. I remember once before we became trainer's. Something happened between his brother and dad and ran off. I found him in a large, hallowed out tree. We just sat and talked, and we walked back to his house... he's also helped me take bigger risks and be more adventurous whilst we've been on the road."
"I bet more than just on the road," she smirked, "don't think I didn't notice the tighter tank-top on him. I bet you like peeling-"
"Shauna!" she yelped, feeling her cheeks burst into flames. Taking some deep breaths, she tried to regain some composure. As she did, her mind flashed back to their orange-archipelago journey and their previous encounters, "so what about Trevor then?"
"He's in Hoenn but he's not competing in the league anymore," she replied, "he realised battling just wasn't his thing. He's trying to photographer one of every Pokémon. He actually helped with my performer portfolio and the Pokévison stuff when I started."
"Where is he then?" she asked.
"He's in Fallarbor," she explained, "a tourist magazine has asked him to get some shots of Hoenn's major landmarks. Meteor falls, sky pillar, Mossdeep space centre, even Dewford's beaches. Since he doesn't have the participation payment, he's been taking on jobs like that to fund his journey."
"Heh, I never really thought about that," she mused, "I mean. My mum made sure I had enough money on my first journey through Kanto but from the chateau to the grand festival, I haven't really got to worry about that stuff. Plus, Ash got quite a bit for the orange league and Silver conference."
"Guess some are just lucky," Shauna shrugged.
"So, I guess your gonna take him on a pretty expensive date after the master class," she smirked, crossing her arms as she watched her friend.
"What?!" Shauna squealed, her own cheeks burning bright red, "we... he... no!"
"He seemed pretty down to earth, and he'll need patience if he's gonna photograph every Pokémon," she smirked, "based on what you said before-"
"I, like, don't need the complication of a relationship," she replied, fanning herself with her hands.
Mulling over what she said, she supposed it could be taken that way. After seeing how Brock was before the change, it's what put her on edge with his behaviour but on the other hand, she could certainly see a charm in it. She enjoys when Ash acts that way towards her, and she could imagine it brightening someone's day even if just a brief interaction.
Serena looked at herself in the mirror. She was dressed in her black wet-suit with her hair hanging down. Turning her top as she held her hips, she had to admit that she liked it. Her original concern when planning a water-based performance came with the thought of performing in front of everyone in a bikini.
Sure, she's worn one to the beach, but everyone does. Performing in front of hundreds, possibly thousands of people was completely different.
"It suits you," her boyfriend whispered as he approached. Wrapping his arms around her waist and turning her to face him. The two shared a couple kisses as they relaxed into each other, "but I'm surprised you've got it on already. Don't you have the prelim round."
"Yeah," she nodded, "but I was too excited. It's been so long since the last showcase and... this made it feel like it was finally happening."
"You're going to do great," he encouraged, "by tonight, you'll have your second princess key on that chain and ready to make it three."
"I wish I could take that confidence," she mused, a light smile flicking on her lips, "if for no-one else than Feebas... she's still nervous."
"It's natural," he shrugged, "I mean. All my Pokémon were nervous before a gym battle or even a league battle... it's just because she hasn't competed yet, you'll see. Once the music starts and the lights are going, everything will fall into place."
"I hope so," she replied, leaning in to peck his lips before pulling back, "it's actually why we've saved her entrance until about halfway through. So, she joins all three of us rather than being out on her own."
"I look forward to watching," he smirked. His lips fell for a brief second as he exhaled a breath, "and I don't think I'm the only one."
"Tierno."
"Yeah," he replied, "I mean, I thought we sorted this back in the orange archipelago but-"
"Don't worry, Ash," she replied, placing a hand on his shoulder, "I'll speak to him... after the showcase."
"Thanks," he relaxed his stance, a toothy smile resting upon his face.
"But like I said, you've got nothing to worry about," she replied, "just because he says a couple sweet thing, I'm not going to fall for him."
The couple shared a longer kiss before splitting up to get ready for the day. Joining their friends in the canteen for breakfast, neither of the friends met yesterday could be seen. Soon they made their way out towards the performance hall.
While her friends made their way towards the audience area, Serena set back where she was led to a changing room. Quickly changing into the performance outfit from the first showcase, she took a seat and pulled out a Pokéball. Tapping the centre button, her pure dragon type materialised in front of her, looking up expectantly. With a soft smile resting on her lips, she leaned down to pick her Pokémon up.
"You ready for this, Bagon?" she asked.
The dragon nodded.
"Good and remember what you have to do?" she asked.
She again nodded.
"Bagon... can I ask you something?" she mentally connected their thoughts.
"Sure," she replied.
"Why did you challenge me?" she asked, "back when we first met. From what I know of your evolution line-"
"Because you see the beauty in the world," she replied, "it's hard to explain but dragons... we have like a sixth sense. We're good at reading people so when I saw you... it was like I knew we were meant to be partners. Why do you want to know?"
She knew from her experience with Dragonite that they did have some sort of sixth sense. She never understood much about it except it was her highnesses justification for trusting Ash back when they first met. Although it does make her wonder if all dragons share it or just a select few species.
"Oh, it's just... the elder," she replied, "she had some... estranged views. And I didn't want to think you picked me over say Ash, or Brock because I'm a girl."
"No... I know her views but never put much thought into them myself," she replied, "and what she said... it had no bearing on my decision to challenge you."
"Will you tell me what you saw in me?" she asked.
"When the time is right," she nodded, "and do you know when that'll be?"
"When?" she asked.
"When you no longer need to ask the question," Bagon replied.
Smiling down at her newest team member, she jumped down to the floor. As if on cue, one of the stage-hands popped her head into the door, "I'm here to take you to the stage for the first preliminary round, Ms Yvonne."
With a small nod, she set off with Bagon by her side. As they reached the platform, a second worker handed her a blue gown and graduation hat. Seeing the other two girls with the same attire, she quickly slipped it on over her outfit and fixed the hat on her head. She noticed one of the girls had a Teddiursa by their side and the other had a Farfetch'd.
"Oh my god, your Serena," the second girl squealed, "like, I can't believe I'm competing with you of all people. I'm such a big fan!"
"Erm, t-thank you," she stuttered, taken aback by her outburst.
"I'm Nini," she smiled widely, holding her hand out, "I've been following you since your days in contests! I knew you'd win that grand festival!"
"Hehehe," she returned the handshake. Never did she imagine meeting such an... energetic, fan, in this place of everywhere.
Luckily for her, the stagehands quickly got them into position on the raising platform. Each of their Pokémon stood by their side as the floor raised up. Bright lights from the stage blinded her as they appeared on the stage in front of everyone. A roaring applause echoed around them.
Serena took a deep breath as the platform stopped, in front of her was a wooden stand usually seen in front of officials when making public statements. She glanced either side, seeing each girl with a similar stand. While a single spotlight appeared to the far side of the stage, the same keyring shaped Pokémon from before flew out, followed by the host of the showcases, dressed in the traditional blue, black, and white suit.
"Bonjour residence of Verdanturf, and all our lovely viewers at home," he announced, "je suis host Monsieur Pierre and here we have our first group of lovely performer's too try and make this prestigious princess key their own. From Slateport city, we have Nini Nene. From Pallet town, we have Serena Yvonne. And finally, we have Jessica Bonnie from Mauville city!"
A part of the stage to the far side opened up and a giant rock sculpture rose from the ground. It stood high over them, like some sort of mount. With their host clearing his throat to draw the attention back to himself.
"Our preliminary round today shall test our performers knowledge," he continued, "any showcase queen needs to be well educated and able to support the young minds which they seek to inspire. They'll be asked a series of questions and the first to get three correct answers will pass through to our freestyle performances. Likewise, get any more than one incorrect answer and they'll be disqualified."
"Self-elimination of their competition doesn't mean a free pass for the remaining performer. They will still be required for three correct answers. As for the order in which they'll be allowed to answer, is based upon our mountain. Their Pokémon partner will need to race to smash open a rock and return with an elemental gem. First to receive one will be allowed to answer. The Pokémon can move after the question is finished being asked. Once they have the gem, they have fifteen seconds to provide an answer. Failure to do so shall be classed as a wrong answer. Do our lovely performers understand?"
She glanced between her two rivals and saw them nod in agreement. She locked eyes with her dragon type. Not only does she need the right answers, but they need to act quick. At least she doesn't need to send Bagon straight away if she doesn't know the answer. Turning back to the host, she gave a nod.
"Il est temps pour nous first question," he continued, "for trainers competing in a regional Pokémon league. How many gym badges are needed to enter?"
Giving her dragon type a quick nod, she shot off from the platform. Running across the ground, she noticed her pulling far ahead. With a shimmer over her head, she leaped and smashed into the rock. A sparkling red gem shone within the rubble, the other two Pokémon coming up behind her.
She quick shook her body, picking up the gem as she stood back up. Charging across the floor, she noticed Farfetch'd soaring overhead. Despite making a leap for her, the wild duck landed on Nini's arm, dropping the gem into her hand as her pure dragon type rolled to her feet.
"Nini a la chance de répondre," Monsieur Pierre continued, "so the question was, for trainers competing in a regional Pokémon league. How many gym badges are needed to enter?"
"Seven," she smiled, with a nod of the head, "seven gym badges are needed."
"Apologies madam mais la réponse est eight badges," he replied, "so onto the second question. What location in Hoenn hosts the yearly league conference?"
Locking eyes with her dragon, she gave a small shake of her head. They never really concern themselves with learning locations until planning out the next steps of their journey. With Ash only having four badges, they didn't need to know where the league was held.
"Jessica a la chance de répondre," he announced, as she glanced towards the other competitor, "so the question was, what location in Hoenn hosts the yearly league conference?"
"The answer is," she took a deep breath, "Ever Grande city!"
"Vous avez raison," he announced, "so Jessica rockets ahead with one point. Now our next question, in the contest circuit. How many ribbons are needed for a coordinator to enter the regional grand festival?"
She looked down to her partner and gave a small nod. Spinning on a heel, she took off across the floor. Teddiursa was already climbing up the rock pillar as she leaped. Smashing her head into the rock sculpture, the normal type fell down as she swiped up one of the gems. A bright purple one. With all her might, the pure dragon type ran across the stage and leaped into her arms. Dropping the gem into her open hand.
"Serena a la chance de répondre," he announced, "but because of the influence on her opponent's retrieval, should she get the answer wrong. Madam Jessica will have the chance to answer instead. So, the question was, how many ribbons are needed for a coordinator to enter the grand festival?"
"Five," she answered.
"Vous avez raison!" he announced, "now we have a tie for first place between Madam Serena and Jessica. Our next question, Alder Adeku is the regional champion of which region?"
She quickly began running through her head. The PLA are aligned with six regions currently, so it must be one of them. Blue and Ethan cover both Kanto and Johto and Hoenn is covered by Steven. She can remember a women called Diantha being champion of Kalos, so she doubts it's that one. Now Sinnoh is meant to have the strongest champion but was their name Alder? Shaking her head, she is pretty sure they were female meaning-
"Jessica a la chance de répondre," he announced.
"Unova?" she asked. With the tone of voice, it was clearly a guess but that's the same answer she came too.
"Vous avez raison!" he announced, "and being only one point away, Jessica could be the performer moving on. She'll also have the chance to steal any incorrect answers from here on out and won't need to send her partner after the gems. Our next question, due to the small size of this region. There league is unlike any other. Requiring an invite from said league to participate. Which league is being described?"
Her eyes widened as she looked at the dragon. Giving her a nod, she shot across the stage. Neither opponent seemed to move as she collected a darkish blue gem. Running back, she handed the item over to her.
"Serena a la chance de répondre," he announced, "the question was, due to the small size of this region. There league is unlike any other. Requiring an invite from said league to participate. Which league is being described?"
"It's the orange league," she replied, "which is held in the orange Archipelago."
"Vous avez raison!" he announced, "and due to the time, we're entering a sudden knockout round. This is a multiple-choice answer, and both of our leading performers shall give one answer. The correct one shall pass on to our free-style round. And due to the earlier intrusion from Serena's Bagon, Jessica shall have the right to pick her answer first."
She felt a single drop of sweat trickle down her forehead. A lump formed in her throat. This is an all or nothing situation and she's on the back foot. She glanced to the side as the spotlight over Nini turned off. She felt bad for the young girl but that's just how it goes some time.
"Our final question for this group," Monsieur Pierre declared, "which of the following Pokémon evolves with the use of a Thunderstone. Emolga, Pikachu or Helioptile? Jessica... your answer please."
With a deep breath, her eyes opened. Glancing at the opponent, she saw her smirk, "easy. It's Helioptile."
"And Serena?" he asked.
She released the breath. While she didn't know much about the other two Pokémon, this one she happened to know regardless, "Pikachu."
"I can reveal that Helioptile evolves into Heliolisk... with the use of a sun stone," he noticed. Jessica's mouth dropped open and her eyes widened, if she had to guess, that mix up is what happened with her, "while Pikachu evolves into Raichu... when exposed to a thunderstone. Meaning performer Serena shall move onto the next round. Now I must ask all three lovely ladies to leave the stage."
She stepped off and walked to the side with Bagon by her side. The platform they arose on disappearing back under the stage. Making it through to a corridor, she quickly made her way towards the changing room from before.
Now that they've passed the first round, she has to get ready. Her heart raced by thumping hard against her chest. A stupidly wide smile taking over her lips.
Torkoal smiled as he glanced down to the stage. Sat in the seat next to his trainer. That female human that they met yesterday was now in the quiz round with a couple other humans. He mused with interest as he saw her answer the second correct question.
"So how are you finding this showcase?" his trainer asked.
"It's certainly interesting... I'm glad to see they value one's mind over other qualities," he replied, "after all, true knowledge is when one knows the limitations of one's knowledge. Of course, knowledge is the true treasure of any kingdom."
"Do you just have a wise quote set for every situation?"
"I have lived a long life, Ashton, and in such a life you learn a great deal," he replied, "and it is my responsibility to ensure that knowledge is passed on. For a man grows most tired when standing still."
"And in this situation, the man is knowledge?" he asked.
"See," he smiled, "had this been the day we met, I doubt you would've connected the metaphor."
"Is that why you picked me as your trainer then?" he asked.
"Well after seeing you all in action, I believe my teachings would've been wasted on your mate or the doctor," he nodded, "which is how I made my decision, along with reassurance from young Primeape. I believe my lessons will be just as useful for him and the others back at this lab as they are for you."
"It's not nice to say that about Brock and Serena ya know," he grumbled.
"I believe you've misinterpreted me," he chuckled, "I didn't mean my knowledge would be wasted on them in a negative way. But they're already quite mature themselves so there's less I could influence them."
"Hey-"
"Fear not," he chuckled, "for a thousand-mile journey must start with a single step."
A loud buzzer went off, drawing both of their attentions back to the stage. The female that they met yesterday was stood next to the male present, who held the microphone in hand and stepped forward, "please help me in congratulating our final finalist, Shauna Sana from Aquacorde town in the Kalos region! She'll be heading backstage as we take a short intermission before we return to watch our lovely performer's compete in the free-style performances!"
Watching closely, he saw the stage move slightly behind the dark cover. With glimpses of light from the audience, he noticed the floor of the stage open up, revealing a large pool covering the entire stage. Some sort of diving board moving in behind the back of the stage.
"So, I take it you'll be taking into account these performances for your own battle?" Torkoal asked.
"Huh?" his trainer blinked, "I erm, not really. They aren't exactly the same thing."
"Exactly," he nodded, "It is important to draw wisdom from many different places. If we take it from only one place, it becomes rigid and stale."
"Do you really think it'll help us in training?" he asked.
"I believe it won't harm any of us," he replied.
A single spotlight shone onto the ground in front of the water-stage. The smartly dressed man and his floating Pokémon walked out to a melding applause.
"Thank you for your patience, now please help me welcome our first performer back to the stage," he announced, "from Pallet town in the Kanto region, we have Serena Yvonne with a magical water-based performance!"
The lights dimmed with a single spotlight onto of water's surface. A light beat of some sort of piano started playing, only the same keys in a steady tempo but it was clearly building. A white head popped through the surface of the water, swimming around with the spotlight following her.
'You shout it out! But I can't hear a word you say! I'm talking loud, Not saying much'
Leaping out of the water, the sea lion Pokémon performed a mid-air summersault. A multicoloured glow shimmered over her body as suspected ice crystals flicked off, sparkling under the stage light. Land back in the water, she continued on with a swirling spin.
'I'm criticized, But all your bullet's ricochet! Shoot me down, but I get up'
From the other side of the stage, a scaley blue Pokémon shot out. Shooting a flaming dark blue ball of dragon type energy at the original performer. Dewgong spun and charged in. Leaping out of the water, her horn glew and extended. Spinning around, she pierced the compressed dragon pulse.
Spinning upon the impact, the fiery explosion swirled around her. Shinning of her furry white coat. As her partner swam underneath, syncing up their movements. The ice water type landed back in the pool, with both taking a wide berth around the stage to face each other.
'I'm bulletproof, Nothing to lose, Fire away, Fire away! Ricochet, You take your aim, Fire away, Fire away'
Firing out an ice beam and signal beam respectively, the two attacks collided. The ice pieced inside, creating a sort of disco ball, redirecting the bug move in several directions. Illuminating more of the stage and the audience. Allowing for the shadow of a human high upon the diving board.
'You shoot me down, But I won't fall! I am Titanium! You shoot me down, But I won't fall! I am Titanium'
Dewgong dived underwater before shooting out, coated in water. Rocketing into the sky with the increased tempo, she spun near the ceiling, ending her aqua jet. Falling back down, the human figure bounced off the diving board, falling right next to the sea lion Pokémon in a similar pose.
Kingdra looked up at the due, taking shots into the sky. Puffs of black smoke erupted around the duo as they dived into the stage-pool. With a brief second pause in the beat, it returned to the original slower tempo with all three emerging near the centre-stage.
'Cut me down, But it's you who'll have further to fall! Ghost town, And haunted love'
The trio paused... they seemed to be looking around. If Torkoal was to hazard a guess, then he suspected something else was supposed to happen.
'Raise your voice! Sticks and stones may break my bones! I'm talking loud, Not saying much'
Each member of the squad entered their own swim in a different direction. Dewgong went left, Kingdra went right, and Serena went back. Making a right turn, they entered a circular swim around the centre of the stage. With the water ice type speeding up and leaping over the honey-blonde girl.
In her swimming motion, her arm raised in time to follow the pure white Pokémon as she cleared her. Landing a head and continuing the circle.
'I'm bulletproof, Nothing to lose, Fire away, Fire away! Ricochet, You take your aim, Fire away, Fire away'
Kingdra shot up behind her and she grabbed on. The duo sped through the water. She somehow managed to climb onto the dragon's back and push herself up as they soared around the stage. The water spewed either side, sparkling under the stage lights.
'You shoot me down, But I won't fall! I am Titanium! You shoot me down, But I won't fall! I am Titanium'
Raising one arm high into the air as the other held onto one of the head branches. Dewgong shot up out of the water, coated in water once more. Flying over the duo, her hand broke the water and if you looked closely, you'd see her touch the fin.
'I am Titanium!'
Pulling herself up, she joined the water ice type in the aqua jet and the duo turned upwards. Shooting high into the air, Kingdra stopped and faced them, shooting another compressed dragon pulse after them. The dark blue flames, surrounded by the swirling water trail created a lovely display of fire and water.
'I am Titanium!"
An explosion engulfed the two performers in the air and both sides dived down from the self-made firework. Splashing down either side of Kingdra, they popped up with the music fading out. Each performing a bowl towards the crowd which erupted in applause.
With the lights turning on, she swam towards the edge of the pool. Climbing out she was greeted by the Kalossian presenter from before, who handed her a towel. He stepped forward towards the audience as the honey-blonde girl recalled her two performing Pokémon... although he could've sworn, he saw her use three separate Pokéballs. She quickly made her way next to Monsieur Pierre as he gestured towards her.
"Joignez-vous à moi pour féliciter Serena Yvonne on a wonderful water ballet for opening our freestyle performances today!" he announced as the crowd cheered once more. She gave a quick bow before running off the side of the stage, "now please reframe from casting your votes until the other lovely ladies have had a chance to dazzle you with their performances too! À côté de la scène se trouve Shauna Sana!"
The lights on the stage faded once more, a new song playing in the background.
Serena sighed as she walked down the corridor towards the changing rooms. While it was a bit of a panic when Feebas missed her cue, luckily, she was able to mentally communicate with the others and salvage the ending. She'll be sure to speak to her pure water type afterwards but right now she needs to get prepared for the final results. She might have time whilst the other four girl's perform but she can't waste that time.
Reaching her changing room, she pushed the handle down and stepped inside. As she closed the door, she froze in place. Stood in the centre of the room was none-other than Palermo. Her arms were crossed with a frown on her lips. Despite being the one who encouraged her to compete originally... she still intimidated the young girl. With a hard swallow, she cautiously stepped closer into the room, her eyes unwilling to move of the head of the showcase circuit.
"Are you proud of that performance?" she asked. Her voice monotone but she couldn't help but think there was a judgement behind it.
"I erm, well," she stuttered, "there's always room for improvement but-"
"This isn't some public interview, and I don't expect those tauros-it responses," she cut her off, "I asked a question. Answer it."
"Did..." she paused, "did I do something wrong?"
"You registrared three Pokémon in your performance, Kingdra, Dewgong and Feebas," she replied, "I noticed the former two, but Feebas was no-where to be seen. Why?"
"Well..." she swallowed, "I-I think she was suffering from stage fright a-and-"
"And you thought it was suitable to register a Pokémon not prepared for today's festivities?" she asked.
"I-"
"Doesn't matter," she cut her off, "fact is, you lied and failed to deliver on your promise. As such, I have disqualified you from today's competition. You won't join the other performers for the judging process. You won't take home the princess key from today. Now I suggest you get change and leave."
"But I didn't know Feebas would-"
"Don't you dare finish that sentence," she cut her off, "your Feebas' trainer. If you don't know what's going through their head, who does? You can try and use any excuse, but it doesn't change the end result. As the performer, the buck stops with you and that goes triple if you reach the role of showcase queen."
"I-I-"
"This isn't up for debate," she declared, "a showcase queen needs to be honest and able to live up to what is expected off them. You didn't today. It doesn't matter the reasons why. A showcase queen is a role model for everyone. If they can't stick to the rules, then they aren't suited for the position."
Her head hung as she glanced at the floor. Rolling her lips into her mouth, she chewed on her cheek. With her eyes closing.
"When I saw you compete in contests, I saw potential and your original performance as well as the one today proved that I was right," she continued, "which is why I'm not disqualifying you from the entire circuit. But I expect much more from you at the next showcase."
The light patter of footsteps echoed as the door creaked open. With it shutting, she glanced around once more. Time seemed to stand still. A pit formed in her stomach, which made her want to heave. Slowly walking over to her things, she changed back into her regular travelling clothes.
As she scurried across the town, unable to look at anyone or thing other than the path ahead. She soon made her way into the Pokémon centre. Handing over the Pokéballs for her Kingdra and Dewgong to a Chansey, she quickly took her leave. Heading north-west to the edge of the town where a river flowed freely.
Hitting the bank, she fell down onto the grass. Her tears finally breaking down her cheek. Her legs curled up as she hugged them with her arms, resting her head on her knees. Sobs escaped from her lips as Palermo's words echoed in her head.
She knew there was always a chance to lose and had she lost in the voting... it would just be that but... the way she was called out for not understanding how her Feebas felt. Maybe she should've just registrared Kingdra and Dewgong... or at least wait until nearer the day to ensure no second thoughts formed. She couldn't be mad at the fish, after all, everyone can freeze up. Performing in front of a crowd for the first time can be terrifying.
Unsure how long she sat there. She glanced up to look into the crystal blue water... the bright sun reflecting within it. Moving forward, so she could stare at her own reflection, she dried her eyes and cleared the marks down her cheeks. Narrowing her gaze, she stood up.
Unclipping a device from her belt. She brought out Feebas' Pokéball. Holding it in one hand, she trembled and frowned slightly.
Torkoal walked across the dirt path, his human right by his side. The scent of blooming flowers filling his nose as the sun warmed his orange skin. Glancing around in all directions, he noticed the further they travelled, the less people were around.
Upon the voting section for the showcase, they learnt about a disqualification. While not going into details about why, they quickly realised the missing performer was none other than Ash's mate. Reaching the centre, they discovered from Nurse Joy that she had left her two performing Pokémon for a check-up and left. Knowing she'd likely want to talk with her third performer, they decided to check the lake which'll allow a face to face with Feebas already.
Soon the sight of the honey-blonde girl came into view. She was lying on her back, staring up at the sky. His human ran ahead, calling out her name. Kneeling beside her, he overhead the panic in the young boy's voice, "-after they announced your disqualification, we came to find you. First, we tried the centre-"
"You didn't need to come all this way for me," she reassured, running a hand up and down his arm, "I'm fine."
"Are you sure?" he asked.
"I've lost stuff before, like you have," she shrugged, "and I have no-doubt I'll lose more stuff in the future. No reason this should get me down."
"So, what're you doing out here?" he asked.
"I wanted the chance to talk it through with Feebas but..." she sighed, "she's been quiet. Like more so than usual. So, I thought I'd let her swim, gather her thoughts and then when ready... we could talk."
Taking a deep breath, he turned his attention towards the lake. Slowly approaching, he stopped at the edge. Leaning in, he took a small sip of water. Glancing around, he noticed the brown-scale fish floating near the other edge. She seemed to notice him, so he made a gesture with his head, to encourage her to approach. A warm smile formed over his lips as she closed in.
"What?" she asked.
"I don't believe we've had the pleasure. Or not officially, at least," he replied, "I'm Torkoal-"
"Yeah, yeah," she dismissed, "your Ash's newest capture... but I don't want to talk with you right now."
"Don't worry, I understand," he nodded, "you sulk when you are upset."
"Upset?" she blinked, "I-I'm not upset. Why would you think I'm u-upset?"
"So why are you upset?" Torkoal asked.
She sighed, dropping the facade, "I probably sucked more today than anyone in the history of showcases... in the history of Hoenn... in the history of sucking."
"Probably," he nodded, closing his eyes, and glancing up to the sky.
"And the girls... you should see them," she added, "they totally hate me."
"Totally," he added.
"How is Serena ever gonna turn me into a performer?" she asked, "I've not got shiny fur like Delphox or Sylveon. I don't have prestige scales like Kingdra. Even Kabutops and Beedrill have their battling strength... maybe I should just quit and swim away in this lake."
"Quit, don't quit. Swim, don't swim," he sighed, "your too concerned with what was and what will be. There is a saying. Yesterday, is history. Tomorrow is a mystery but today is a gift. That is why it is called the present."
"You think I should stay?" she asked.
"It is not for me to say," he shook his head, "but... if you're going to make a decision like that. Surely, you should talk to others who'll be affected by your choice to get their thoughts on the matter?"
"Serena?" she asked.
"Her," he nodded, "but what about the other members of her team? Quagsire, I believe, you became quite close to him and Croconaw as well."
"B-but you've never met them," she replied, "how-"
"Because I listen. We have two ears and one mouth. That is a good indicator for the ratio between the two," he smiled, "and when putting yourself down, you never compared yourself to either. I may not have met either yet, but I have inquired about my fellow team members from my human. It is as clear as the water, that you hold them dearly."
"Well yeah," she muttered, "when I first visited the lab... those two were the only ones to really make me feel welcome. They were kind."
"Do either of them have shiny fur or prestige scales?" he asked, "because they seem just fine on the respective teams without... so why not you?"
"They didn't screw up today?"
"Tell me," he replied, "why do you think we fall?" he waited but no response came, "it is so, we can learn to pick ourselves up."
"Why are you helping me?" she asked.
"Why do I need a reason to help anyone who needs it?" he asked.
"But I never asked you too," she muttered.
"And that is why you need it more than most," he let a soft smile rest upon his face, "now why don't we see if our trainer's are in need of assistance."
