Author's Note:

Here it is, a smaller chapter which is tying up some loose ends and propelling certain characters into the next stage of their arcs. I could see some of you being surprised by some of the revelations in this chapter but remember, this is middle of an arc, not end. A lot more stuff can happen. Likewise, we get to see some familiar faces again. We also get hinted at a new rival for someone, who some of you might remember from as a name drop reference in a previous chapter. And we get a focus on May who kinda gets a new Pokémon, think back to chapter forty-two, this is like the follow up to that. Obviously, you might think I'm rushing a certain relationship, but everything shall make sense once we're further in. Don't forget to vote in the poll and with that, let's begin!

Chapter Forty-Five: Resurrection & Rejection

Misty cautiously ran her hand over Spheal's fur. The newest team member sat neatly on her lap as she felt a comforting hum come from her. While they were riding in one of the aqua jeeps with Matt. She wasn't sure why but both of them had been summoned to the main base. After taking a boat around the northside of the region, they docked just outside of Lilycove where this transport was waiting.

Of course, she informed Lance of the turn of events. He ensured that they'd be tracking her, ready to act if needed but he claimed there was no reason her cover should've been blown. Matt certainly was acting differently. Gone was his joyous friendly demeaner and out came a stern, ridged one instead.

Glancing ahead, she noticed a large mountain which sat on the water's edge with a path inside. It didn't take her long to figure out that this must be the hideout he was talking about. Zooming inside, she noticed lights quickly passing which were placed up on the rocky walls. While a pathway made of water followed them all the way down. Soon a metal platform came into view. They parked in front of the staircase and climbed out. Following the large man, he tossed the keys towards one of the scattered around, giving them a brief instruction to 'fill it up'.

It was weird... the big guy is normally joyous and talkative, but he's hardly said anything on the ride up. If she had to guess, it was because they were heading to see Shelly. She didn't know why but these two hardly seemed to get on. Even if neither of them are particularly bad, they are just clashing personalities.

Walking through the military-style base, she noticed different people dressed in lab coats with the aqua emblem underneath. She knew this place was more of the scientific base. As she followed the large man, she tightened her grip on the water ice type. Soon they came up to a large metal table with a glass board behind. Shelly stood with her arms crossed. Her finger tapping one elbow as they approached. She made sure to stand slightly behind Matt.

"Nice for you both to join us," she commented, turning around to the glass board. Grabbing a marker, she began writing down some things but focused on her instead of the new information.

"Always down to business," he commented, "don't we even get a hello? How you been? Where is Ole Archie anyway. He was meant to be here."

"He's overseeing the escalation project," she explained, her eyes flicking down to her, "this is the one you trust?"

"Righty-o," he laughed, slapping her on the back, "Serena here has saved our skin on more than one occasion. You want a field leader, she's the one for you."

"One for what?" she asked.

"We need to discuss this quickly, time is off the essence," Shelly replied, turning back to Matt, "your dismissed. You'll find a speed boat at the second exit to join the captain. He's expecting you."

"The old sea-dog best be expecting me!" he laughed, "it's been too long since the bothers have spoken face to face."

She watched Shelly roll her eyes and exhale as the large man walked away. The stern women turned back and continued to write down some names. Her own was at top with one name underneath. With Serena written off to the side, and three more names underneath.

"So," she declared, spinning back round, "we're breaking into the weather institute. You're going to lead a small tactical team to accompany myself and my assistant. We'll be tasked with gathering the objective, while it's your teams job to ensure we get out with it."

"Can I ask what it is we're getting?" she asked.

"And why do you need to know?" she asked.

"Well..." she swallowed, "it would be nice to know what I'm working with. Is it some paperwork or do we need to carry a giant generator out?"

"It'll be a data stick," she instructed. Pulling out a rectangle drive, no bigger than a pen, "nothing too big to worry about."

"So why do you need me?" she asked.

"Thanks to magma's idiocy on top of mount chimney, the authorities have raised the threat level," she explained, "the moment we enter the premises, they'll be alerted, and they'll have tactical teams deployed. We need to ensure at least one of us, with the data stick makes it out."

"Well... you should give it to me, or well, one of my team," she suggested, "after downloading the-"

"It doesn't matter what we're downloading," she insisted, "but why should we give it to you."

"Is there some sort of problem?" Serena asked.

"Matt picked you for this operation because he trusts you," she replied, "but I don't. I don't know you and given his lax judgement in the past... well let's just say if you think you've proven yourself with him, then you need to work twice as hard to prove yourself to me. So, I'll ask again, why?"

"If you and your assistant are the techy guys, it won't take 'em long to figure out your mostly likely the ones to have it," she explained, "slip it in my pocket and if worst comes to the worst. I can have my Surskit run it out or-"

"Alright, we can discuss that later, but you do make a good point," she replied, "for now, I need to know what I'm working with. What's your team?"

"Tentacruel, Carvanha, Surskit and Spheal," she replied.

"Carvanha won't be any use without water to fight in," she mused, "the mission is scheduled for a few week's time so I might suggest you explore the outskirts of Lilycove. I'm sure you'll be able to find a suitable addition to your line up."

"But what about planning?" she asked.

"I've got it covered, and we'll discuss your teams movements closer to the mission," she replied, "for now, however, like I said. You need to improve your squad if you want to stand a chance at this."

Nodding she turned to walk away. She barely made it three steps when the female commander called out.

"And don't go parading around in your field uniform, the last thing we want is attention because aqua grunts were spotted by the beach. You'll find the changing rooms on the left side of the base, and we have plenty of scivies for agents to change into. Also grab yourself a bunk."

She quickly made her way through the base and found the wardrobe of different outfits. Searching through the clothes, she couldn't help but chuckle to herself that the real Serena would enjoy this. Putting together an outfit of a white, sleeveless tank top, and orange undershirt. Along with denim jean shorts and trainers. She decided to pick a bunk later and make the most of the day.

Heading out the way they entered, she reached the small car park. Realising she couldn't drive the jeep even if she wanted too, she took out a Pokéball and pressed the centre button. Her large water poison type materialised in the water. With a leap, she jumped onto her back, and they went swimming away.

It didn't take her long to make it out of the cave. Not wanting to draw attention to herself, she had her fully evolved Pokémon swim out as they passed by the populated beach. Taking out the device Lance gave her, she went through the contacts and hit the one labelled dad. Holding it to her ear, it didn't take long for the dragon type specialist to answer, "hello. Can you talk?"

"Yeah," she replied, as her partner slowed down, "we arrived in Lilycove. Their base is in the mountain side by the ocean-"

"I'm already aware," he replied, "but without their leader present. We can't reveal our hand."

"Well, he's out in the ocean, on some sort of boat on something called the escalation project," she explained.

"I'll get air support to scan the area, but the Hoenn-ocean is massive," he replied, "anything to help narrow it down?"

"No," she replied, "sorry."

"That's alright," he replied, "it's a start at least. Did you find out why you were summoned?"

"They need someone to lead a theft at a place called the weather institute," she explained, "Matt suggested I do it."

"Why not himself?" he asked.

"Shelly's coming instead but leading the tech side and given the risen terror level they don't want multiple heads at risk," she explained.

"Makes sense," he mused.

"But I think we can use this too bring out the leader," she replied, "Matt's gone off to join him. If Shelly were to be arrested, and I got away with the data then I'd need to deliver it specifically. It could be our chance to find Archie."

"It could be dangerous," he replied.

"I knew that when you approached me months ago," she replied, "this is our best chance to find him."

"Fine," he sighed, "we'll go with that and keep me posted on the process. I want a squad ready to intercept you on the day.

"Of course," she smiled.

"Anything else?" he asked.

"Just she suggested I get a couple more team members," she replied, "Carvanha's hardly suited for this mission and-"

"Right," he nodded, "if I could make a suggestion. I'll bring one of your older Pokémon in a day or two. We'll act like you caught them nearby, but a familiar face would probably help more."

"Who?" she asked.

"Your Marill," he replied, "families of them are known to inhabit the ponds between Lilycove and Foretree. It'll be easy to play off like one wondered over and since she isn't exactly one of your stronger Pokémon, less questions would be asked."

"Hehehe, yeah, I can't imagine what they'd think if I showed up with Vaporeon or Starmie," she chuckled, "but I'll also look for another Hoenn native Pokémon whilst we wait. It'll seem less suspicious, I think."

"Right," he replied, "don't hesitate to check in when you get chance again. I also have a tactical team ready to storm that base should things take a turn for the worst."

"But that could throw away all our progress," she replied.

"Your safety is my first priority," he replied, "and there's nothing you could say to change that."

The line went dead, and she placed the device back into her pocket. Feeling the warm sun on her skin, she smiled. The fresh salt air filling her nostrils. Closing her eyes, she remembered the times when she was travelling, and they'd stop on the beach. Even the night where her and Rudy became official. Opening them once more, she sighed. He's been handling the gym duties whilst she's been away but every time, she feels like they can get close... something happens.

She'll be glad when this whole thing is over... while she never admitted it, that was one thing she felt jealous with Ash and Serena. Even in the toughest situations, they were by each other's sides. Shaking her head, she scanned the shoreline for an abandoned bit of beach.

"Over there, Tentacruel," she instructed.

As her water poison type changed direction. She squeezed her eyes together; she saw a weird oblong blue shell resting on a rock pillar. It burst open, revealing a pink pearl inside with a face. A sphere of water formed and shot towards them.

Stabbing the projectile with one of her tentacles. It imploded upon itself as they closed.

She tinted her tentacle with purple poison and threw it at the Pokémon. As it moved towards the pearl, the shell slammed shut.

"Tenta!" her partner cried out.

A purple liquid oozed out of the sides as the shell opened up. A sick looking face with a purple mark revealed.

Wrapping a different tentacle around the outside, she lifted the Pokémon high into the air. Throwing it across the water and onto the sandy beach.

Speeding after it, they reached the shore and Misty jumped off. Running over to the wild Pokémon, she took out a spare Pokéball and tossed it. Striking their opponent, they were sucked inside. Landing on the ground, it wobbled back and forth. After the fourth shake, it stopped and dinged.

A smile formed on her face as she walked over. She just caught a new Pokémon and given how it attacked Tentacruel, one with a lot of guts.

Turning to the side, she saw her jellyfish Pokémon approaching. Thanking her for the ride, she quickly returned her. Right now, she should get this one looked after, and maybe Nurse Joy could give her some insight into which Pokémon she just caught. Then they might as well spend the day training.

With the mission upon the horizon, she has to be ready for anything. This might be the toughest part of her undercover yet.

May smiled as her finger tickled under the beak of her little blue bird. She cooed in and chirped a word of thanks, extending her wings as she stood on her shoulder. Chuckling at her, she glanced around at the others.

They were currently walking through a small cave tunnel which is meant to connect Verdanturf back to Rustboro. She could already see the exit, as she glanced around the others. Serena had Zangoose walking beside her with Ash. They were all having a silent conversation with each other. Her brother was riding on top of Lairon just in front of Brock, who had his Solrock floating beside him.

Soon they exited out into the luscious green forest. She couldn't help but smile and take in a deep breath. Living on this side of Hoenn for the last couple of years, she never realised how much she grew to love the sight. It was pretty similar to Petalburg forest, even if not as thick.

As her normal flying type took off from her shoulder, spreading her wings. She smiled. Even if not going higher than the treeline, just the fact she was willing to fly filled her with hope. Letting out a sigh, she relaxed. Her eyebrow lowering into a scowl as the outline of the city came into view. Her mind rushed back to the fossil centre and the events which played out back there-

"Like I said, I need time to think," she replied.

"Of course," he replied, holding his hands up and stepping back, "tell you what. I plan on stopping by Rustboro on my way back to Petalburg. Ya know, to get my fossil restored and I assume you'll be doing the same?"

"That is the plan," she agreed.

"So how about we agree to bring this up then," he replied, "even if you need more time. That's fine. I don't want to rush you or anything."

"Sounds like a date."

The image of Brendan already at the Pokémon centre, dressed in a tuxedo and holding a box of chocolates and flowers entered her mind. Her cheeks burst into flames as she shook her head. Waving her hand to cool down slightly.

"She has really come far."

"Huh?" she blinked, turning to the source. Brock had fell back slightly and now walked beside her.

"Swablu, I mean," he nodded up towards her bird, "thanks to Beautifly, she's really risen up to the challenge. She's the one you're using in the appeal round. Right?"

"Yeah," she nodded, glancing back up to her small bird. Closing her eyes.

"Wanna talk about it?" he asked.

"About what?" she hummed, not chancing a look in his direction.

"About what's on your mind. I'm guessing it's a boy," he pushed, "the way your cheeks just burst into flames-"

"Shut it," she snapped.

"Okay," he held his hands up, "I just meant... it reminded me of Serena."

"What do you mean?" she asked.

"Back before they became... that," he gestured ahead towards the couple. Serena was laughing as she swung on Ash's arm, her head resting on his shoulder, looking closely, she spotted the intertwined hands. Zangoose wore a smirk on his face, with a pink-cheeked boy in the middle, "Serena would have this day dreams. Their friend, Leaf, called them Ash-anticies. And she'd zone out with a smile on her face... then blush madly as she came back to reality."

"Does this have a point?" She sighed.

"Just that if you need someone to talk too, I'm here," he offered, "but I bet your excited about getting your Lileep revived."

"Yeah," she nodded, "it's a weird feeling though... knowing I'm going to be getting a new team member."

"Just remember that it doesn't matter how you meet them," he smiled, "every Pokémon you meet will be special in their own right."

"I know," she rolled her eyes. The cotton-winged bird landing back on her shoulder. She smiled and reached up to stroke her head, "and we're going to win our third ribbon. Right Swablu?"

"Blu, Swablu!"

"I'm sure you'll do great," he smiled softly, "and I think having this to work towards has only motivated Swablu for getting better. When a goal is in sight, it can help one achieve things once thought impossible. And what about Skitty? She's your battle round partner, right?"

"Yeah, hehehe," she chuckled nervously, "we've tried working on a routine but she's so energetic, she couldn't focus on anything for longer than a few minutes. But she's made for some great battles."

"I'm not surprised," he mused, "sometimes an endless ball of energy can be even more effective than a well-placed strategy. The continuous attack and movement allows you to control the flow of the battle which in many cases can decide the outcome before any moves are used."

She nodded and him he moved back towards her little brother and his rock steel type. Letting out a breath, she reached to her belt and unclipped her normal types Pokéball. Staring at the device, she let out a small smile. The image of her little pink Pokémon running circles around her future opponent really did fill her with energy. She never felt more confident going into a contest.

Letting out a breath, she dropped the hand back to her belt. The image of her childhood friend entered her mind. An aching feeling pulled on her heart as she clenched her fist over the top. Her tongue lightly licked her lips, and she closed her eyes.

She had to admit. The idea of dating the boy was intriguing to say the least... but her fears about ruining the friendship still held strong. What should she do?

She stepped inside the Pokémon centre and quickly made her way over to the counter. Nurse Joy stood with a smile on her face and after a quick exchange of pleasantries, she handed over her Swablu's and Skitty's Pokéballs. Grabbing three room keys and registraring for the contest, she made her way back to her friends. Giving one key to Brock and the other to Serena.

"I'm gonna head over to Roxanne's gym," Ash mentioned, "I know I already have the badge but if she's free, then she'd make a perfect training partner ready for my battle with Norman."

"I'm heading over to the Devon Corp," she chimed in.

"I'll come too," Max cheered, "I'd love to see Mr Stone again. And maybe show him Lairon or-"

"Sure, you can Lairon for the day," Brock chuckled, "but I'm going shopping. We need supplies and it'll save doing it after the contest."

"I suppose you can tag along then," she rolled her eyes. Crossing her arms with a playful undertone.

"I'm gonna go to the north of the city," Serena added, "there's a small inlet beach and I think it'll be nice for Feebas to have a swim. She's still not very talkative since the showcase."

"Should we say that we'll meet up back here for six," Brock added, "then we can grab some dinner together."

"Sounds good to me," Ash nodded.

"So, we're all agreed on the plan," Brock smiled.

With a nod from each one, they set off in the different directions. She couldn't help but chuckle at her brother riding on the rock steel type's back. It's weird how comfortable he is around literally every Pokémon they've encountered, even the more intimidating members that the couple have brought over.

Setting off towards the Devon corporation, she took in the sights of the high-class city. Memories of the early days of their journey when she'd sneak off to Ms Roxanne's classes. As they crossed one of the roads, she looked into one of the city parks. Her lips pinched together as she saw a crowd of people surrounding an ongoing battle. Glancing at her brother, she could see a desire to watch, and she had to admit, she was inclined to agree.

Heading through the crowd, she saw a familiar bug flying type shoot up above the crowd. A series of razor-sharp leaves following after.

A familiar voice called out the next instruction as they came in view of the battle. It was a Roselia paired with the Masquerain flying above, facing off against a Nuzleaf and another Pokémon she didn't quiet reconsigned. A bright-blue, pinniped Pokémon. The throat and chest were beige with speckling around the edge, looking like bubbles almost. There were two short tusks protruding from the upper jaw, and two dark-brown oval eyes on the face. Two flippers laid in front of the Pokémon. With a short, flipper-like tail behind. On the sides of the blunt muzzle were thick, white whiskers. She used her Pokédex to scan:

Sealeo, The Ball Roll Pokémon. The evolved form of Spheal. Its white whiskers are very sensitive. Sealeo will balance Spheal on the tip of its nose, checking its scent and its feel to be sure the Spheal is healthy

"Now Roselia, Masquerain," the first trainer shouted. Watching him in the flesh, she gasped, "time for the finisher!"

"Blizzard Sealeo," his opponent instructed, "and Nuzleaf, get Masquerain back down too!"

A smirk flickered on Drew's face. His Plusle stood on his shoulder with his hands in his pocket. His eyes locked on the battle ahead.

With a deep breath, the water ice type breathed out a massive icy wind. A cold shiver tingled down her spin as she rubbed her arms. A cover of snow forming over the battlefield with Roselia in the centre. Nuzleaf jumped above, heading straight for the bug flying type.

Having the antenna stand straight, looking like some sort of eye. They vibrated with a semi-transparent wave echoing out.

Striking the grass dark type, he went flying back down straight into the blizzard. Squinting through the rushing frozen wind, she gasped.

Roselia was twirling on her pointed feet. Pink petals swirled around, like some sort of shield, creating a sort of crystal ball image at the centre.

The flower-hands pointed upwards with balls of white energy slowly gathering within. Coming to a stop, the grass poison type pointed them towards the source of the blizzard. A bright beam of solar energy shot through, striking the second opponent.

Sealeo blew backwards, landing right in front of his trainer as Roselia stopped among the frozen field. One leg in front of the other. Masquerain floated back down, hovering just over the small Pokémon as both bowed. Red lights recalling both Nuzleaf and Sealeo. The crowd erupting in cheers.

"Thank you all for allowing us to entertain you today," he smiled, "but I must now take my leave. I hope many of you plan on competing tomorrow."

The crowd continued to roar in applause as he recalled his two Pokémon. Slowly the people started to disperse and quieten down. Standing back up, he started to walk in their direction as his eyes widened. The pure electric type on his shoulder climbed onto his head and gave an energetic wave. She couldn't stop the smile from controlling her lips as he walked towards her.

"May... long time no see," he smiled, "I suppose you was watching?"

"Only the last bit," she replied, glancing down to her feet. Kicking the back of her ankle, "it was a pretty good combination."

"Well, the contest committee confirmed this year's grand festival shall be double-format," he replied, "so my training's recently been focused on such."

"Your already ready for the grand festival?" she asked.

"Hardly," he replied, "I've got four ribbons but it's never too early to get down to business."

"So, you're going for ribbon number five tomorrow?" she asked. Struggling to swallow due to a lump in her throat.

"No, I'm just here to observe this contest," he replied, "between finalising my team and prepping for double performances and battles, we've hardly been able to get ready. We're just here to observe the competition and possible future opponents."

"Just like in Fallarbor?" she replied.

"Yes... and no," he replied, "and thanks to you, actually."

"Me?" she blinked.

"Yeah," he nodded. Flicking his wrist out, a red rose flew out and he held it out.

"This for Beautifly?" she asked.

"Not just her," he replied, a sort of shimmer within his eyes causing her breath to stick in her throat, "Plusle here has missed your Minun, as well."

"Oh erm, right," she stuttered, quickly reaching down to her belt. Pulling out the electric types Pokéball, she released her cheering Pokémon onto her shoulder and quickly dropped it back into her bag. Grabbing the flower, she held it for her partner to sniff.

"Nun Minun."

"Plusle." Drew's electric type smiled towards her. Winking as she climbed up onto her head.

"Thank you," she muttered, her voice quiet, barely above a whisper. Unsure what else to say. She felt her cheeks heat up as she starred down at the flower in her hand as her heart thumped against her chest.

"Well, you all did very well back in Fallarbor." He offered a smile. "That's the main reason I'm back to viewing."

"Huh?" She blinked.

"Before I was just focused on Clark, expecting him to be my competition," he explained, "but with your victory, it opened my eyes. Any coordinator can be a threat and I can't relax just because I'm prepared for one individual. So, thank you."

"I erm," she looked around but unable think of something to say, "yeah-"

"How about I thank you properly," he smirked, "tomorrow night. After the contest, which I presume is your reason for visiting. We should go out for a meal; the city has some of the best restraunts in the region. What'cha say, my treat?"

"I erm, yeah," she blinked, unable to properly process what was happening, "sure. Why not."

He smirked, "I'll be looking forward to it. But for now, I must bid you farewell. Both Masquerain and Roselia need a visit to Nurse Joy, after the battle, I mean. And I'll make the reservation whilst I'm at it."

She was unable to say anything as he set off in the direction they just approached from. Her eyes darted down to the flower as the entire world seemed to disappear. The cute boy might've seemed jerkish back when they met in Slateport but really, he just has high standards. Now she's been proving herself in the contest circuit... A wide smile broke free into her face as she started marching down the path towards Devon corp.

Her Minun took the flower in her mouth and ran head. Darting around in front of her.

"Hey sis!" Max's voice broke through, "wait up!"

She stopped in her tracks and turned to see her brother, still on the rock steel types back, running up behind her. They stopped just by her side, and they all continued at a steadier pace. Her cheering Pokémon even returned and climbed up her body.

"What was that about?" he asked.

"It doesn't matter," she dismissed, "your too young. You wouldn't understand."

"Quit that," he replied, "the only thing I don't understand is why would you agree to go out with someone like Drew?"

"It's none of your business, that's why!"

"But he's a jerk, don't you remember how he acted when you first met him?" he asked, "and what about Brendan?"

"What about him?" she shrugged; eyes closed.

Although the image of her friend flashed in front of her mind. Her heart clenched and ached at the thought of their next encounter. She knew he was in the city and sooner or later they'd run into each other... but it doesn't matter now. The decision is made and surely, it's for the best. Not only does Drew clearly like her but now she won't need to ruin their friendship.

"You're making a mistake," her brother declared, "even if you don't like Brendan... which I wouldn't buy for a second. I remember how you acted whenever he came around to help you study even if you don't. Then dating someone like Drew is a mistake."

"What do you mean, someone like Drew?" she asked.

"I mean a rival," he replied, "if he needed to compete in this contest. He wouldn't think twice about defeating you. What sort of partner would do that?"

"It doesn't matter," she declared, "he's not competing so-"

"Could still happen, especially at the grand festival," he replied, "and what do you think Serena, or the others would say."

"It's none of their business either," she replied, "they certainly didn't ask me about their relationship or even something like taking on a criminal gang on top of a volcano. Now were almost at the Devon Corp so just leave it or you can go back to the centre. I don't want my first meeting with Lileep to be ruined."

Without another word, they set off back towards the Devon corp. As they left the park, she noticed the skyscraper stand tall above most everything else.

Ash smiled as he walked into the Rustboro gym. As he looked around the familiar reception area, he found a girl. Probably a couple years older than himself with long turquoise hair which reached down her back. She turned and he saw she was dressed in a red sports jumper with short sleeves and white stripes down the outside. With a long black skirt. Her eyes flickered down in a scowl with the corner of her lips flicking up in a smirk.

"Hey," he smiled, approaching with an open hand, "are you here to challenge Roxanne? I'm Ash."

"Katie," she replied. Her eyes unmoving with her arms crossed. After a couple of seconds, he lowered his hand seeing as she wouldn't return the gesture, "I'm guessing that's why your here?"

"Well actually," he nervously chuckled, scratching behind his head, "I already have the badge from this gym. But we're passing back through on the way to Petalburg, and I thought Roxanne could help with some training. Gym leaders are-"

"A benchmark," she interjected, "once you've proven ability to pass them. Why should you fall back upon yourself?"

"I was going to say a professional trainer and skilled battler," he replied, "so I could still learn stuff from them."

"You believe that knowledge can be gained from everywhere?" She pinched her lips together. "I assume this means your battle style comes from a combination of everything you've experienced?"

Despite believing what was just stated, he had to pause for a moment. His mind filled with images of different opportunities he could've used for improving his battle style, most notably with things like showcases and contests. The image of his greatest rival, Paul, flashed in front of his head. He truly did take in every experience and plan accordingly. After all, the reason he lost in the Silver conference was because his rival used his entire experience with him and planned for his team. Getting right inside his head. If he truly wanted to win the Hoenn league now... he should truly try to incorporate that part.

"I erm, yeah," he replied, flicking his eyebrow up, "I guess."

The automatic doors slid open and in walked the head teacher from Rustboro's trainer's school. She smiled as she placed a box of papers down on the reception desk before turning towards them.

"Oh, hello Ash. This is a surprise," she greeted, "and welcome too Katie. I presume you're ready for your gym challenge."

"I am," she nodded.

"So, Ash, can I ask what I owe this visit?" she asked, "did you lose or damage your badge or-"

"N-no, nothing like that," he stuttered, "we were passing through. May's competing in the contest tomorrow and I thought what better place to get in some training then the local gym?"

"Well, I'd be more than happy to battle you, Katie does have a scheduled battle so I must honour that first," she explained, "but afterwards, I look forward to seeing how your team has progressed."

"That would be awesome," he cheered, "so does that mean I can watch the gym battle?"

"It's fine with me," Roxanne explained, "but it's not my decision. Katie, this is your gym challenge."

"So, I get to decide?" she asked, "in that case, no. You can't."

"Wha-"

"I'll respect your decision, my apologises Ash," the rock specialist replied, "but can I ask why, Katie?"

"It's simple really," she explained, her eye flickering over to Ash himself, "we're rivals, both competing in the Hoenn league. I believe it would be a strategic flounder to allow my competition to see my skills first hand when I wouldn't benefit from the same condition."

"Well like I said, Ash, I have to respect my challengers choice," the gym leader nodded, "but if you return later this afternoon. Katie is my own scheduled challenger today."

The two females headed into the gym, and he let out a breath, slouching in his stance. Turning around, he headed out of the building and across the town. It would be silly to wait around for them to finish when he could get in some training. They're in a highly populated city, with a contest upon the horizon. Of course, there'd be trainers everywhere to battle.

As he made his way across the city, he stopped by one of the parks. Inside, on the public battle fields stood a familiar face. Sakura stood with her team in some sort of discussion. He smiled and approached her, "hey Sakura!"

"Huh?" she blinked, turning to face him, "oh hey Ash. What're you doing here?"

"Ya know, May's competing tomorrow so I thought I'd get some training in," he smiled, "I bet your here to compete too."

"Sure am," she smiled, "so how would you feel about a battle? It's Loudred's first time in a contest so I want to make sure he's ready."

His eye lit up at the opportunity. Not only for the chance to battle but he could certainly use the opportunity to start expanding his battle style. He lost the silver conference because he couldn't incorporate every experience and it's clear Katie is taking full advantage of it. The chance to truly take a step in adapting like that isn't something he could pass up. He already has four badges so before long; he'll be getting ready to compete... so he needs to be ready.

"I would love too," he smiled, "but can we set up the others in training first?"

"Of course," she smiled, and he quickly released his team.

Torkoal moved onto one side of the field, opposite Loudred. Both ready for the approaching battle. Espeon and Kirlia got work, with the former teaching the later the move shadow ball. He had tried to get Duskull to teach her, but Kirlia wasn't fond of taking instructions from someone like her little brother.

"Don't worry, Espeon is a real good teacher," Sakura explained, "I bet by the time we part ways she'll have the basics down. But you'll still need to expand upon the training for a bit."

"I know she already knows destiny bond but-"

"That's not a good representation for her progress," Sakura explained, "destiny bond in manifesting the ghost energy within and linking it up with her psychic abilities. Connecting her to her opponent. Moves likes Shadow ball require exhaling said energy which can be just as difficult as learning from scratch."

"Right," he nodded. Turning his attention to the side, where his grass type was working with Sakura's.

Torkoal had already started teaching the wood gecko on learning the move solar beam, but Roselia was expanding upon the teaching. It made sense since being a fellow grass type, she could better relate to the internal changes he'd need master to learn the move. The pure grass type turned towards him, and approached, "sorry for the bad timing but I do have a request."

"Sure Grovyle, what'cha need?" he asked.

"I know were passing through the forest on the way back to Petalburg," he explained, "so I ask if we could stop by my old home... please."

"Of course," he replied. With a single nod, he walked back over to Sakura grass poison type.

Smiling at the sight, he glanced upwards towards Duskull and Taillow. He already guessed Grovyle would want to pay his respects, but he briefly wondered if Taillow would like to revisit her old flock. She was always more guarded than Grovyle but surely, she'd enjoy meeting up with her old friends too.

Duskull was like a sitting psyduck in the air as the female bird delivered an onslaught of attacks. Despite being tough natured, since learning of her secret, she seems to have mellowed out slightly. Even being more considerate for the less experienced team members. A singing voice entered his ears,

Work all night on a drink of rum
(Daylight come and we want go home)
Stack banana 'til the morning come
(Daylight come and we want go home)

He turned to see Corphish shooting two beams of bubbles up towards Beautifly. The bug flying type swooped around in the air, avoiding his onslaught of attacks. The rouge Pokémon singing whilst keeping his sparring partner at bay. Dancing around the attempted counter attacks.

Come Mister tally man, tally me banana
(Daylight come and we want go home)
Come Mister tally man, tally me banana
(Daylight come and we want go home)

Beautifly appeared to be getting frustrated as her attempted string shots hit the ground. The pure water type continued his performance as he dominated the battle. If anything, it just proved to him that incorporating performance and contest styles might be how he improves as a trainer. Glancing to the other side, he noticed Sakura's Sableye and Azumarill locked in a battle of defence and offence.

"You ready?" Sakura asked, as she walked behind her Loudred, into the trainer's box.

With a smirk on his face, he moved into his trainer's box, locking eyes with his pure fire type. The bright sun burned down over the field, which is presumed had something to do with his partner, "we're more than ready!"

She took in a deep breath as she stepped inside the Devon corporation. It wasn't anything special, just a usual office receptionist environment with many adults and Pokémon walking around. Some dressed in suits and others in lab coats. The cool air-conditioning washing over her.

"Man, it's sooo cool to be back here," her brother gleamed. He was still perched on the back of Brock's rock steel type. She couldn't help but roll her eyes at his excitement. She's the one here to get a new Pokémon but he's just as excited about a business building, "hey! It's President Stone!"

She looked over to where her brother was pointing. A man dressed in a purple suit was leaning over a desk, speaking with the receptionist on the opposite side. As she followed her brother across the lobby. As they approached, he stood up and turned towards them, a warm smile on his face.

"Well, if it isn't the young man who helped protect our building during the aqua siege," he smiled, arms wide open, "tell me young Max, what do I owe this visit? And who might this young lady be? My sorry dear but I'm usually good with faces and I don't recall yours."

"Oh erm, it's alright," she replied, "we've haven't met before. I'm May, Max is my little brother."

"Well then, welcome to the Devon corporation," he smiled, "I must ask, Max, what about your other friends who accompanied you last time?"

"They're in the city but we all had different things to do," he explained, "we came here because May has a fossil that needs restoring!"

"Say no more," he smiled, "you can all follow me, and we'll get that sorted out for you. Normally we require verification for suitable trainer's but if you're all traveling together with the hero's from our siege. Along with your father being who he is, I'm sure we can skip that formality today."

"You know our dad?!" she asked.

"After the last visit, and hearing about him being the Petalburg gym leader, I felt like it was only right," he smiled, leading them down a corridor, "we quickly hit it off, actually. Although given the working relationship between himself and my son, that's not surprising."

"It's sooo cool that you and our dad are friends," her brother gleamed, "but... I wonder why he didn't tell us when we met in Larvaridge."

"He has his reasons, Max," the president smiled, winking towards her brother, "and I'm sure you'll like the reasons when you find out."

"Huh?" she mused, narrowing her eyes. Studying the older man.

"Whoops," he replied, covering his mouth, "I might've already said too much. Never mind me."

"Weird," she muttered.

"Anyway May," he gestured towards a door, "you'll find our resurrection lab just through here. They already have another trainer waiting through the process, it takes about half an hour."

"What am I meant to do for half an hour," she muttered, "I erm, mean. Thank you."

"No worries, May, but you should be happy with the short time," he explained, "just a few years back, it would've taken a full day, if not longer. As our technology improved, the time frame has shortened."

"That's sooo cool!" Max beamed.

"Hey Max," the president spoke up, "whilst your sister gets her new Pokémon, how about I show you to our Anorith park. It's an inside forest which we've designed to learn how the prehistoric Pokémon acted during their time."

"That would be so awesome!" He cheered.

Seeing them travel down the corridor and enter another room further down, she sighed. It's so embarrassing, having her nerdy brother geek out over everything in this place certainly isn't how she imagined meeting her new team member. Shaking her head, she stepped inside the lab.

A female lab assistant dressed in a white coat approached and she quickly handed over her fossil. She took it over to a dome like device and placed it inside, typing on the adjacent panel the dome closed up. Lighting up like a firework display. She felt her heart thump harder against her chest, excited for the prospect of the new team member joining soon. It reminded her of the hunt for Wurmple way back at the start of her journey.

"H-hey May."

She froze. Blinking once, twice. She slowly turned to the source of the new voice. Her ears didn't diseeve her, stood beside her was none other than Brendan... which really shouldn't be a surprise. She knew he was coming here to revive his fossil and he'd likely be around for her contest. Her mouth went dry, and a cold trail of sweat slid down her forehead.

During the moment with Drew, everything seemed right... but now, she couldn't be certain. With a deep breath, she forced a smile onto her face and turned to face him full on, "hey Brendan. How you been?"

"Good," he whispered, "and you?"

"Good," she nodded, "hey erm. So, they said something about getting verification for checking a trainer's suitable and I was wondering who you got?"

"My dad. Being the regional professor's son has it's perks, ya know," he smiled, a light chuckle. Taking a deep breath, he narrowed his eyes, "hey erm, I-I don't want to rush you b-but-"

"You're wondering if I've got an answer?" she asked.

Biting his lower lip, he slowly nodded. His eyes squinted, almost completely closed as his cheeks turned a dark red colour. A lump formed in her throat as she tried to force the words out. A slight cough escaped inside. Sighing, she closed her eyes and hung her head.

"Yeah, Brendan," she whispered, "and... no. I'm not interested in you in that way. Sorry but it's never going to happen."

"Okay." His voice was weak and meek. She peaked a look and found a tear trickling down his cheek. He was quick to wipe it on his sleeve though and turn to face the machines.

She wanted to reach out or say something, but she couldn't. Her mind couldn't think of anything to say even if she did. It felt like hours but soon one of the lab workers walked over, standing just in front of him.

"Brendan, your Anorith is ready," he explained, "if you'd like to follow me."

His eyes darted down to the floor, and he slowly followed the worker. She couldn't help but keep an eye on him as he walked over to the device. He greeted the small bug Pokémon with a smile and allowed him to climb up onto his shoulder. He didn't even officially capture him in a Pokéball before walking out, thanking the lab worker on his way. She frowned when she saw him purposely divert his gaze from her's.

If she truly wants to be with Drew over Brendan... then why did that hurt so much?

That though remained on her thoughts as she stood next to a window. Glancing up to the sky, she noticed some Wingull's and Pelipper's flying over but other than that, it was a pretty clear day. Her heart slowed to what felt like one beat every minute or two. She barely registrared someone else approaching.

"Alright May, your Lileep is ready," the assistant mentioned, "if you'd like to follow me."

Following her across the lab, she stood in front of the dome machine. It took a couple more minutes but the lights on the device turned off. A dinging noise went off and the door opened. Grey-white smoke exhaled from the pod as a shilluette slowly slivered forward. Soon the Pokémon sat in the light.

A somewhat plant-like Pokémon with eight dark-tipped, pink petal-like tentacles protruding from an opening on top of the head. Inside the pitch-black opening were two glowing, yellow eyes. The remainder of the head was purple with yellow eyespots resembling targets. The head was connected to the body through a yellow stem. The body itself was purple and semi-spherical. Stepping forward, she kneeled next to the small Pokémon, "hello Lileep. I'm May."

Holding her hand out, the grass rock type slivered closer. Extending the head closer, her purple tentacles wiggled against her hand. Giggling at the ticklish feeling, she saw the eye spots turn into upside down semicircles. She couldn't help but find the friendly expression to be pretty cute.

"How would you feel about coming along with me, Lileep?" she asked, pulling out a Pokéball.

Blinking. She looked back with some confusion.

"Sorry, you must not be familiar with this. See, it's called a Pokéball," she explained, "it would make for easy travelling and moving around a lot easier. We would also get to work together and become friends."

"Eeep! Lileep!"

Smiling, she took that as a yes. Reaching out, she lightly tapped the device against the newly revived Pokémon. A red light engulfed her, and she disappeared into the device. It shook back and forth in her hand a few times before stopping. A ding ringing out to signal a successful capture. Reaching with her other hand, she pulled out her Pokédex and scanned the device:

Lileep, The Sea Lily Pokémon. In ancient times, it lived in warm seas. It disguised itself as seaweed to ambush its prey and devoured them whole when they got close. It sticks to rocks with its powerful suckers and can't be washed away no matter how rough the surf gets

Type: Grass / Rock

Ability: Suction Cups

Hidden Ability: Storm Drain (Note: This hidden ability is currently locked)

Gender: Female

Nature: Gentle (Note: This could change when this Pokémon evolves)

Move(s): Wrap, Astonish, Acid, Confuse Ray, Ingrain, Ancient Power, Mega Drain, Brine, Rock Blast, Seed Bomb

May's Pokédex switched screens to a list of her current on hand team, although all the images were silhouettes, "please select which Pokémon you wish to send back."

She skimmed over the top, knowing who she was using in tomorrow's contest. Along with not wanting to send Lileep away, she narrowed it down to three. It took a minute, but she made her decision. Closing her eye, her thumb hovered over the image. She'll see them when they make it back home for Ash's gym battle but that didn't make the decision any easier. With a long exhale, she tapped the image and felt the Pokéball teleport off her belt.

"See you soon, Beautifly."

Standing up, she quietly made her way out of the lab and went to find her brother. He was having a mock battle between Lairon and an Armaldo which President Stone instructed. With Brock's Pokémon to keep him safe, she bid them goodbye, heading out of the building and going towards the gym.

Brodie inwardly smirked as he hid behind a tree, following a large man through the jagged pass forest. A cave sat in the rocky-mountain, leading into the volcano. Seeing the man disappear into the cave, he silently followed him.

As he ventured further into the cave, he noticed a single security camera planted in the ceiling. Inwardly rolling his eyes, he couldn't help but think about how poor the security in this place is. Had he wanted to remain hidden, it would be easier than originally thought. Standing right in front of the device, he put on a smile and gave a small wave. His Ditto mimicking from his shoulder.

An alarm went off and he soon found himself surrounded by eight magma grunts. The large man he followed her stood behind them, now in the proper uniform with arms crossed, "todays not your day."

"Maybe, maybe not, Tabitha," he replied, "but I guess that'll be up for your boss to decide."

"Wha-what? How do you know my name?" he commanded an answer, stomping forward.

"Easy, I was looking for potential employers," he explained, "and given the recent... exposure, for certain activities from your organisation. I thought magma could use the extra help. So, I familiarised myself with the public faces... their kinda my thing."

"What makes you think I'd give you the chance to speak with the boss?" he asked, "and not just end you here."

"You could but this isn't my first rodeo. Given my past activities, there's this detective that's been on my tail for years," he explained, "you might know him. He wears a cape, red hair. Big head. Likes to think he's something because he's apart of Kanto's elite four."

"What's this got to do with me?" he asked.

"Just I've got an auto email set up straight to him. Should I not leave safely, then he's contacted and informed of my last known location... here," he smirked, stepping forward into the large man's face, "but I should have plenty of time to come to some arrangement with your boss on a job and get back in time to shut it off. So, we all win. Now how would it look to the big boss man, if you cost him another base. Especially with such attention from authorities currently."

"What do you want?" he asked.

"To get paid," he replied, "I'm a mercenary. Specialising in stealth and disguise. I want to see if my skillset could help out your bosses plans."

"Why?" he asked.

"I heard he pays well," he replied, "what other reason do I need?"

The large man grunted, and nostrils flared. Inwardly sighing, he knew exactly what this dudes issue was. He might be working for magma but just like himself, he's a mercenary. Won't do anything unless it directly benefits him.

"And ya know," he shrugged, "if I was to take on a job or two. It would save you having to stick your neck out for the same mission. We both know that any time magma so much as sneezes in public since mount chimney, they'll be there with a literal army to take you in."

"Hmph," he scoffed, glancing between the grunts surrounding him, "alright lackies, back to work. I'll handle him."

Tabitha turned around and started walking further into the cave. He noticed the hesitation as each grunt slowly turned and returned to what they were doing before. Following the field commander, he walked into a large open creator which was filled with high end equipment and computers. Several more grunts and Pokémon walking around performing several tasks... had he just wanted one admin, he'd have called in a strike... but who he wants is the big boss.

He followed him into a separate room behind a door fixed into the cave wall. The rocky room wasn't anything spectacular, just a single desk, with a portable computer on and large chair which the magma admin took up. Snacks and energy drink cans also littering the room. Tabitha typed away on the laptop.

"Tabitha?" a stern voice echoed from the device, "you're not due a progress report until tomorrow morning. Is everything on track?"

"Yeah, yeah," he dismissed, "they're getting it done. But I got someone here who you might be interested in."

"What?" he asked, as the large man turned the screen around. Brodie watched with an unflinching stare at the screen, as he saw his main target. An elderly man with glasses and red hair took up the screen, "who are you? How did you find our base?"

"Name's Brodie. I'm a merc, you might've heard of me," he replied, "and I found this place when your donphan over there went rolling through the local Pokémart. Faces are kinda my thing, so I'd reconsign one that's been planted over the television the last week."

"Tabitha, you what?!"

"Hey, boss, I wasn't in full get up or anything," the large man replied, shooting out of his chair.

"I'll deal with you later," he dismissed the large man, turning his unflinching eyes back to himself, "so what exactly are you offering?"

"Like I said, I'm a thief and a good one," he explained.

"Yes... your reputation does proceed you," he nodded.

"So, I'm offering my services too you... you know my reputation and what I am good at," he shrugged, "I just expect... suitable, monetary gain for my trouble. I heard you pay better than the competition, like aqua, which is why I came here first."

"Perhaps your skillset could be useful," the man mused, "tell me, Brodie... that was your name, correct."

"For now," he nodded, "after all. I can't stay on the run without switching it up every now and then."

"No, no, of course not," he replied, "so tell me, what do you know of the weather institute?"

They spent nearly an hour detailing the exact job that he'd perform for them and a date to complete it by. Despite Tabitha's hostility towards him, he was set up with a time frame to complete his mission by and a price... of course, once they receive payment, they'll have a team ready to catch him too. Making it out of the cave, he made some distance, ensuring he wasn't being followed before calling up the big boss man.

"Agent Brodie reporting," he spoke, "operation omega is underway."

"What did they ask you to get a hold off?" Lance asked.

"Some data from the weather institute," he replied, "but I'm not completely convinced it's for them."

"How come?" the boss asked.

"Because it's weather patterns," he explained, "specifically, historic drizzles in Hoenn's past? That's the opposite of what they're after."

"But it's also what Misty has been told her next assignment is," Lance sighed.

"So, you think magma are having me do this to keep aqua from furthering their goals?" he asked.

"I hope not," he replied, "because that means magma is in a position that they just need to delay the competition."

"But it could also be useful for catching both higher ups," he smirked, "imagine... I make a copy of the data. Maxie pays me. He either does it in person and we take him down then and there, or he wires it, and we catch him with the paper trail. Then I offer the data to lure Archie out. Two Pidgey's, one rock throw."

"It would mean Misty would have to fail her mission," he replied, "which could be seen as betrayal on her end-"

"Unless she failed because of some outside factor unprepared for," he replied, "like a devilishly handsome thief with a knack for disguise."

"You want to pull off a heist, in the middle of a siege... by yourself?" Lance clarified.

"Wouldn't be the first time," he replied, "remember who got you the Rocket data base from the Silph co siege."

"I'd need to warn Misty," he sighed, "and we'll still have the task force ready to intervene. I'm not risking her for the mission."

"I know you wouldn't," he replied, "but you shouldn't tell her. She'll be safe, play along. And her reaction will be more believable if she didn't know ahead of time."

"You know what you're asking me to do," Lance replied.

"I do," he nodded, "but it would be the best way to keep her safe."
