Author's Note:

Here it is, and before I begin, I want to give a trigger warning. This chapter explicitly shows gaslighting. I know this can be upsetting so if you don't want to read it, I'll understand. Next author's note I'll do a TL:DR for this chapter to catch up without the triggering subject manner. Onto the actual chapter and this is the long-awaited romantic chapter and a little go between to flesh out the Lilycove arc. It's also Serena's birthday! Now I've mostly skipped over the presents bit because it's repetitive and difficult to come up with unique and meaningful gifts every time. You might be wondering about the title (I did change it to better suit the chapter). Along with the romantic-antics of our main couple, we will explore two other blossoming relationships... as you can probably guess by the title, not all of them are happy. Remember in the first author's notes for the Hoenn arc, I said one storyline I planned on exploring was cheating and I remember so many people trying to guess who, with many thinking it was an already established relationship. We get to see which couple it involves. This chapter is also partly based on the episode Party Dancecapades from the XY anime. We also get to give Max's Shuppet a nickname, this one was suggested by T.V. 2000. Don't forget to vote in the poll and with that, let's begin

Chapter Sixty-Two: Love, Loss, and Friendship

Ash smiled as he glanced down at his girlfriend. Her head resting nicely on his peck and arms were loosely wrapped around him. He glanced down to notice her night-shirt was riled up revealing her midriff with one leg stretched out over his. Reaching up he carefully tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, carefully supporting her head, he slide out from her embrace and rested her down on the bed.

Moving out of the bed, he stood up and scattered around the room grabbing his clothes and her present. Moving them to her side, he crouched at the side of the bed and watched her resting. Light breaths inhaled and exhaled through her nose in a comforting manner.

A strand of her hair fell down over her cheek and he smiled. Even with the smallest imperfection, she still looked beautiful. Shaking his head, he couldn't stop the low chuckle from escaping his lips. He ran a hand down his face.

"Kiss me," Serena's mental voice echoed in his head. Looking back at her, he noticed her lips puckered up and her eyebrows were raised with expectation.

Smirking at her, he stood up and leaned over. Lightly placing a hand on the bed, he leaned down and pressed his lips against her. Smiling as her head lifted up to push back and deepen their embrace. Her arms ekansed their way around his neck and he lowered himself down. Allowing his hands to move around her back. Closing his eyes, he continued to just lose himself in their affection.

He couldn't be sure how long they occupied each other's lips, but he knew it wasn't long enough... alas, the need for air forced them to part and he lightly rested his forehead against her's. Her shiny blue eyes opened and looked directly into his.

"Happy birthday," he whispered.

Smiling up at him, she released a psychic wave and flipped him onto his back with her rolling on top. Pushing her lips back onto him, he closed his eyes and tried to just enjoy the more enthusiastic show of affection. After a couple moments if pure bliss, he felt her pull back. Opening his eyes once more, he found her straddling him, stretching her arms up and arching her back. The shirt revealing her belly button to him.

Inwardly smirking, he pushed himself up and blew a razz-berry onto her stomach. She fell forward and practically trapped his head against her midriff. Rolling to the side, he reached up and added in some tickle-fingers as he blew a second razz-berry. Loosening her grip, her joyous laughter echoed in his ear.

Grinning like a madman, he pushed himself up into a kneeling position. Diving down onto her neck, he blew a third and continued his relentless tickling. He had to stop just to catch his breath, but he leaned over the birthday girl as she settled down with rosy, pink cheeks.

"Hehehe, sorry, I couldn't resist." He lightly chuckled, leaning to the side to grab the present. Presenting it in front of her she extended her hands, and it was engulfed by psychic energy. With precise movements of her fingers, the power ripped the paper off and she turned it to see it head on. "It's a make-your-own jewellery kit. You already have some knowledge on making clothing so I thought this would be the next step."

"I love it." She smiled. Using her hands to move it over to the desk in the room, she sat herself up and kissed him a couple more times. He gladly returned the gesture as his eyes instinctively closed... until her tongue ran over his top lip.

"Erm-"

"Hehehe, that's getting you back for the tickling." She giggled, her arms loosely resting on his shoulders. "I can't wait to start using it, but you know what we're doing today, right?"

"Of course," he winked, "it's that showcase ball thingy."

"Thingy?" She crossed her arms. "You're not interested in it."

"Of course, I am," he replied, "I'm happy to do anything with you..." He pulled her into a longer, more meaningful kiss. Slowly parting and looking straight into her big blue eyes. "But you know me... I'm not great at these formal things."

"Have you got your suit ready?" she asked.

He glanced across the room and nodded towards the suit hung up in the wardrobe. Yesterday the two of them went shopping and picked out outfits ready for the formal dance. While not a fan of the smarter, stiffer clothing, he's willing to put up with it for a few hours to enjoy this event.

"Yeah," he replied, "and your dress?"

"It's ready but remember we'll get to change when we get there," she replied, "it would be a little awkward walking around in the streets during the middle of the day."

"We should get going then," he replied.

"It doesn't start till ten." She reached up and wrapped her arms around his neck. Shuffling forward to slightly straddle him.

"Maybe." He leaned in and pecked her lips. "But I'm sure the others want to see you first." Another peck. "And I'm sure they'll have plenty to say if we just spend the whole morning in the room before we leave... not that I would complain."

"Your right." She smirked.

He remained still as she got off the bed and walked over to the bathroom. Once the door shut, he fell to the side and laid on the bed. Running his hand down his face, the stupidly wide grin was stuck on his face. He never realised just how great being able to show and receive affection feels, even just getting to hug the person he loves is everything... and since it's her birthday, he'll be sure to give her the best day possible!

Max smiled as he watched the birthday girl put her last present to the side. They already ate before the presents part of the morning and he couldn't help but feel the joy from the honey-blonde girl, who radiated off her. While he's over those feelings from when he first saw her in a showcase, he couldn't deny that she's been a massive role model on the journey. Sometimes even more than Ash. He's helped him understand Pokémon more, but she's helped him understand himself so much more. As he relaxed back into his seat, his eyes glanced over to his three Pokémon beside them.

"So, what's everyone planning today?" Brock asked, drawing his attention, "I know you've got that showcase gathering Serena."

"Yeah," she smiled.

"And I might have another surprise planned for when it's finished," Ash added, "for your birthday."

"Do I get a clue?" She asked with wide eyes, hugging his arm close.

"Nope." He smiled.

"Spoilsport." She pouted, sitting back down, and crossing her arms. Her facade quickly faded to her usual happy expression. "What about you, May?"

"Drew's dad is holding some event for the business so he's off there... presenting a strong family unit." She used air quotes for the last part. "So, I'm just gonna hang out here and train for the contest some more. Getting everyone ready. What about you Brock?"

"Nurse Joy is gonna give Electrike a full physical and one of her Chansey will be allowing Chimecho to accompany her on the rounds." He smiled. "So, while we'll be here, we won't be around much. How about you, Max?"

"Gonna hang out with Walley and explore the city some more." He smiled, looking down to his three Pokémon. "And hang out with you three as well, right?"

His team cheered in response. Some light chatter continued until the couple made the first exit so they could put the presents in their room and collect their outfits for the event. With May using the exit as a reason for her own, heading out back with her team of six. Bidding Brock goodbye, he watched the breeder head off to the main desk with both Electrike and Chimecho out. Recalling his team, he set off to the front of the centre.

Upon exiting the centre, he found Walley sat on a grass field with his own team of three. Walking over, he took a seat next to them and when their eyes met, both their faces lit up. Exchanging quick pleasantries with each, they stood up and started making their way across the street.

"You don't have your Pokémon out?" he asked.

"I didn't want to cause chaos or-" He glanced around and realised most of the people around had their own Pokémon out as well. Realising how silly it sounded, he took a moment and let out the three members of his team.

The journey continued with light chatter between the two friends, soon making it to the walk-way overseeing the beach. His eyes widened at the sight of the numerous water types visible on the ocean front. It took all his self-control to stop himself running down to try and add one to his team, but not only would it be rude to his friend but if they were in this point of the water out of the whole ocean, then they are probably with trainer's already.

As they continued on along the path overlooking the beach, he smiled at the sight of Ozone floating around in her fire form, relishing in the perfect weather with Geico and Ralts playing a game of tag... although it seemed that teleport gave the psychic fairy type a slight advantage.

Some commotion on the beach drew his attention and running over to the rail, he smiled at the sight of a double. One side had a tall female with long blue hair and he reconsigned one of her Pokémon, Scizor, from the time Ash caught his Torkoal but the other one was only slightly recognisable.

Floating over the ground was a purple Pokémon who had a round head with elaborated tufts which resembled a witch's hat atop. The tips of the tufts were paler than most of the body. She had a thin, red mouth that resembled the letter 'w'. Below her head, she had a short, thorax-like lump which connected the head to the body. Three elliptical red spheres surrounded the upper portion of her body. With extensions on the sides of her body with the foremost ones being tattered when compared to the rear ones, which gave it the impression of a cloak. He held out his Pokédex to scan the Pokémon:

Mismagius, The Magical Pokémon. The evolved form of Misdreavus. Mismagius have been known to cast spells to make people fall in love, so some people search for this Pokémon as if their life depended on it. There is no evidence that this really worked however

Glancing across to the other side of the makeshift field, he saw none other than Phoebe who had both her Banette out and another Pokémon he couldn't even remember seeing in a textbook. The Pokémon seemed to be made up of an anchor and ship wheel, held together by a mass of green seaweed. The anchor was rusty-brown mottled with blackish spots. The seaweed partially envelops the thick, curved bottom of the anchor in a zigzag fashion, leaving empty spaces which resembled sharp teeth. While the seaweed continued upward to cover the anchor's thick shank and the spindle of the wheel. Five individual strands of seaweed trail off the small hub in a star-shape. He used his Pokédex once more:

Dhelmise, The Sea Creeper Pokémon. The soul of seaweed adrift in the waves became reborn as this Pokémon. It maintains itself with new infusions of seabed detritus and seaweed. Legends have it they were born within sunken ships on the ocean floor from the souls lost on the vessel

Taking out his Pokéballs, he let out the three members of his team. Shuppet and Ozone floated over each shoulder as Geico climbed up to stand on his shoulders, looking over his head. A glance to the side showed Walley leaning over the rail to watch, with Ralts in his arms.

Scizor charged forward with his claws shimmering silver. Rapidly punching his arms into the sea creeper Pokémon with great speed.

Banette shot up from behind the bug steel type. A series of blue fireballs surrounding him, a mischievous grin plastered on his face.

Mismagius shot out a bolt of electricity. It shot through the will-o-wisps and burst them, trapping the fellow ghost type in an electrical field. With glowing red eyes, the magical Pokémon let out a wave of ESP. It surrounded the trapped ghost type, lifting him up into the air.

"Switch it up Scizor!" the female opponent instructed.

His claws glew with more of a green tint as his punches slowed down. Turning into more open slashed as he knocked the grass ghost type around.

Unsure which of the two duels to follow, his eyes flicked between the two. As his eyes went up to the ghost duel, he noticed more of a teddy in the cage.

A black blur over Scizor drew his attention as Banette shot out. The pincer Pokémon looked petrified and collapsed down onto one knee.

Dhelmise shot out several vines of seaweed. Each one tying up one of the bug steel types limbs as he was lifted up into the air. Ghost type energy radiated off the sea creeper Pokémon and Scizor cried out in pain. Despite trying to escape on his own strength, it was useless.

"Mismagius!" the female trainer commanded.

Banette turned on a whim and shot out two zigzagged black beams which had a purple outline. Striking the opposing pure ghost type as she tried to charge.

Rings of fire surrounded the magical Pokémon. Blowing out in waves, Banette dived out of the way.

With a flick of the seaweed vines, Scizor was sent flying. Blocking the mystic fire with his body, the bug steel type collapsed down on the beach-field. A red light engulfed the fallen partner, and he was quickly withdrawn back into his Pokéball.

"How about we call it there," Phoebe said, with several people in the crowd groaning, "we've got the... thing, remember."

"Yeah," the trainer sighed, "if we can pick it up again later."

"Course." She smiled. "I'd never turn down the opportunity for a good battle. But we really gotta go, they'll be so mad if we're late."

Recalling the remaining Pokémon, the two trainers made their way out from the crowd. While several of the audience groaned, they quickly dispersed, and he watched them walk away until out of sight. With a sigh, he relaxed and glanced over to the boy stood next to him.

"That was better than I thought." Walley smiled. "What do you say, Max, wanna have a battle?"

"You mean right now?" he asked.

"Of course." He smiled. "I might not be big on battles, but it certainly looked fun, and I think Ralts would like the opportunity."

"Ralts!" His psychic fairy type cheered.

"Sure!" He beamed, jumping back as he ran over to a small grass patch which could work for a field. As he reached one edge, he turned to see his opponent walking over to the other side, his three Pokémon surrounding him. Shuppet would be the best option to face Ralts but he's had the least training so his best bet would be one of his more experienced Pokémon, "alright Geico, I choose you!"

Ash smiled at the sight of the large hotel which housed the showcase ball. Giving the hand in his a light squeeze, he turned to see Serena lightly holding onto his arm. Looking up to him with wide eyes, "you sure you still want to do this?"

Leaning down, he gave a small kiss onto her forehead, but it only lasted a second or two, "anything for you."

The two of them just stared into each other's eyes for a moment until a female voice called out to them. Turning to the source, he smiled at the sight of Shauna running up to them with... Trevor, yeah Trevor, slugma-ing behind. Soon the brunette stopped just in front of them.

"Hey Shauna." Serena let go of his hand to engulf the feel friend in a hug. Passing him the covered outfit to hold. "How are you?"

"Super excited for the ball." She smiled as the hug ended. "And you birthday girl?"

"Great," she replied, "have you seen Lisia anywhere?"

"Probably got here earlier. You know how she likes to be involved with everything," she shrugged, "but I spoke to her after the showcase. She was able to find a date, so she'll definitely be here."

"Speaking off, we should get going inside to change," Serena suggested.

All four of them nodded in agreement and headed into the hotel. Making their way to the hall, they were escorted into the two makeshift changing rooms with Serena and Shauna heading into one, while he and Trevor went into the other. He couldn't help but notice how out of breath Trevor seemed to be from the run, obviously he couldn't be sure how far they ran but from his reaction, he'd guess all the way from Rustboro without a single rest.

Looking into one of the mirrors after changing, he smiled at the smart, dark blue button shirt with a black blazar. He had the top button undone and the collar slightly flicked out, mainly for breathing purposes. With smart black trousers and formal black shoes making up the rest of his outfit. Seeing Trevor ready at nearly the same time, they made their way back into the corridor to wait for their dates.

"So, Trevor." He started. "I heard you wasn't competing in the Hoenn league."

"Nah." He shook his head. "After the orange league, I decided to retire from professional battling. I never really enjoyed it, and just did it because Tierno did, so I've been focusing on my photography." He made note of the camera bag slung over the smaller boy's shoulder.

Their conversation was cut short as the sight of the two girls exiting the opposite changing rooms. His eyes fixated on the honey-blonde girl, who wore a sleeveless dark-blue-dress which nicely hugged her and had the bottom skirt part covered in white stars. Black leggings covering her legs with high-heel dark blue shoes. Her lips were bright red with lipstick and other makeup on her face. While he'd never say she needs to wear the stuff, he also knows she enjoys it.

As they closed the gap, the first thing she did was button up his collar and fold it down. Inwardly chuckling that she wouldn't let him get away with it, he was at least thankful he didn't have a tie. It was one of the compromises they made when picking out the outfits.

Interlocking their hands, they made their way inside slightly behind the other couple. Upon entering the room, he blinked in surprise. It was easily the size of a league field with a large staircase to the north of the room. While tables and chairs scattered around the edge of the room, the centre was fully open with several couples dancing. Even some Pokémon were dancing together.

With a brief glance to the side, he noticed Serena taking out a Pokéball and he followed suite, with them releasing Swellow and Murkrow, respectively. While they had several options for Pokémon partners, Serena and himself agreed to help the dark flying type out with expanding their relationship from beyond pure mentorship. Swellow glanced around the dancing humans and Pokémon. "I thought you said they'd be battles?"

"There is a battle thing... but at the end and they pick random guests to partake," he explained, "right Serena?"

"Yeah," she nodded.

His female bird rolled her eyes before taking off to land on a wall-ledge overlooking the room. He noticed Murkrow following shortly behind to land next to her. Smiling at the sight of them, he couldn't deny that he's also looking forward to-

"Huh?" He turned to the side as he felt a tightening in the hand which was holding Serena's. "What wrong babe?"

Instead of receiving an answer, his attention was turned to one of the far entrances where he saw Lisia enter the room, but the truly surprising part was her date. With her arm looped around a familiar green haired boy in a more traditional tuxedo. His mind instantly flashed with the image of May, whose probably training for the Pokémon contest later this week. Although that image disappeared as he felt Serena drag him across the room.

With each step he felt more forceful movements from his girlfriend. He could practically see her using her abilities to rip him limb from limb. Sure, they might not always agree with May, no two people always get on, but they are still friends and if she saw this then-

"Hey guys, it's great to see you here," Lisia greeted but his eyes remained locked on Drew who stared back with defiant eyes. The corners of lips fought the urge to flick up into a smirk, "I want to introduce you to my date for this event, Drew Shū."

"We've met," he replied, in a low voice.

"Well Drew here was such a darling," she gushed, "just when I thought I'd need to cancel, he swooped in and saved the day."

"Really?" she grunted, clearly holding back her rage. Reaching up to place a relaxing hand on her shoulder, he whispered the deep breaths instructs into her ear. Last thing anyone wants is to cause a massive scene and ruin the event for everyone.

"Is something the matter?" Lisia asked.

"Not yet," she growled.

"Serena?" Lisia asked.

Instead of answering, she turned and pulled him back out across the room. Chancing a glance back, he noticed Drew leading Lisia across the room in the other direction. They respectively brought out Masquerain and Altaria as their partner Pokémon.

Reaching the far side of the room, Serena took a moment to calm down and discuss the situation. Agreeing to just enjoy the day and avoid them so they couldn't ruin it for everyone, they'd also sit May down later. While part of him felt like they should go now, it's still Serena's birthday and she's been very excited for this ball. He can't let Drew ruin this for her just like how he'll hurt May when she finds out about this.

Mingling with Shauna and Trevor, they got some food from the buffet spread out across one side of the room before joining the dancing couples on the floor. A smile found its way onto his face as he saw Swellow and Murkrow flying around together in some sort of dance.

"Now it is my great pleasure to welcome our special guests for today's event." Monsieur Pierre announced with the lights turning off. Several spotlights turned to the staircase leading into the hall at the head of the room. Down stepped the ghost type specialist who wore a green flower dress which mixed all different shades together along with the colour white and a little yellow. One of her legs exposed because of a slit in the side up to her thigh. Next to her stood a tall women with long blue hair which was tied up in a ponyta-tail with a dark green formal vest with a puffy white centre and long dark green trousers. "Hoenn's acting showcase queen Phoebe Fuyou and her date Katie Kaede."

Seeing them walk down onto the dance floor, everyone moved to the side with them being no exception. Taking a seat at the same table as Shauna and Trevor, they watched the couple enter a slow dance in time with the music. One spotlight followed them around the floor.

Chancing a glance around the floor, he noticed Lisia and Drew on the opposite side of the room. While the green-haired boy seemed less interested in the proceedings, he noticed the superstar staring straight at Serena with pinched lips and narrowed eyes, clearly thinking over their previous encounter.

Not wanting to indulge the arrogant coordinator anymore, he focused on the dancing duo. He particularly focused on the blue haired girl as he remembered the brief encounter at Roxanne's gym in Rustboro. He's heard a lot about her, where from the Winstrate family or even just looking her up but it's clear she'll be a major threat in the league. Even the idea she's friends with elite four members puts her on the next level. Could Phoebe of personally trained her?

"Now we shall créer deux cercles for a dance rotation," Monsieur Pierre announced, "may la madams be on the inside and le gentlemen on the outside. Start next to your respective dates and when I declare monnaie, the inner circle shall move around one spot to the left. Comprenda?"

As the music started, he followed Serena over to the circle. Placing one hand on her waist and intertwining the other hand with one of hers, she rested her free hand on his shoulder. Following her lead, they entered a slow sway back and forth. While enjoyable, he could feel her preoccupation about the previous revelation with Lisia and her date. Swallowing hard, he chanced a glance around them. Nervousness creeping in about the first-

"Monnaie!"

A cold sweat sent shivers over his body as he reluctantly released his hold on his girlfriend. He has nothing against them dancing with others given the event but he's never slow-danced with anyone other than Serena... and she always lead the flow. How is he meant to handle it?

The inner circle moved, and his eyes lingered on Serena as she started a dance with the guy next to him. Seeing how naturally they entered a similar pace; he felt a hand land on his shoulder. Unable to look his next partner in the eye, he interlocked one of their hands while placing his free hand on her lower back. To his relief, she seemed to instinctively enter a steady pace which he just followed. His teeth sinking into his lower lip as he avoided looking to his dance partner.

With another call, they ended up switching partners again. He couldn't be sure how many times it went by as he just let the awkwardness of the situation wash over him. Every so often he'd glance around until he found where Serena was. Somehow just looking at her was able to calm his nerves.

"Monnaie!"

Hearing the command once more, he bowed to his previous dance partner and the inner circle moved once more. To his surprise, he found the next dance partner to be Phoebe of all people. Swallowing hard, he noticed the pairs to either side of him starting the dance. Reaching out it hold the ghost type specialist in the correct form, he waited... nothing happen.

"Something wrong?" she asked.

"Erm... Well-" He chuckled nervously, "I'm not too sure what to do."

"What?" she asked, a tint of disbelief in her tone.

"You see, Serena taught me to dance so I was used to her leading a-and everyone today has kinda just gone with the flow, so I followed again," he explained.

Seeing the elite four-member chuckle, closing her eyes, and shaking her head, she started to sway back and forth. Following her lead, he just let the music wash over them after the embarrassing start. Glancing around the large room, his eyes soon found Serena within the circle and the sight put a frown on his face. Given the event, he didn't mind her dancing with others in this situation but right now she's dancing with Drew.

Although far from eloquent movements, they both seemed stiff. If he were to guess, both of them were trying to lead it and looking closely he noticed lips moves so they were clearly talking but he couldn't say what exactly.

"Monnaie!"

Releasing his previous partner, he bowed to the ghost type specialist and the circle moved once more. Luckily, none of his future partners seemed to wait for his lead and they were able to finish up the entire event. As the circles dispersed over the dance floor, he struggled through the crowd to try and find Serena, slightly concerned she might try to knock Drew through a wall with her powers.

Seeing her storm over to the table where they left their stuff, he followed. Catching sight of Drew as he made his way out of the dance hall. Frowning in that direction, he made his way over to the table and took a seat next to his girlfriend, knowing she needed him right now. Rubbing Serena's back, he could feel her anger radiating off her. While he couldn't be sure what exactly was said, he could make a decent guess. His hand rested on top of her's, rubbing his thumb over the back of her hand, "deep breaths. In and out, in and out."

"What's going on?" He turned to see Lisia stood in front of them with her Altaria by her side. Kneeling down, she looked his girlfriend dead in the eye, "well?"

"Why did you bring Drew to this event?" she asked.

"I needed a date and we got talking," she replied, "you know that-"

"He's meant to be dating our friend, May," he informed, "they've been... whatever they've been for a while."

"Oh my."

Her eyes widened. Even through her face of make-up, he could see facial tics as her eyes fluttered rapidly. It seemed like she was fighting the urge to cry right now with the moisture in her eyes. Closing her eyes completely, she took a few deep breaths as her fists tightened.

"I'm so sorry... If I had known, I just thought he was a regular guy," she replied, "I never would've accepted his offer if-"

"His offer?" Serena emphasised the first word, quirking her eyebrow up.

"I hit a few dead ends and was down when I met him, we spoke and I explained the situation," she replied, "that's when he offered to accompany me. I never would've taken it further. I'm too busy for that sort of relationship but it just felt like he was doing me a favour."

"Doing himself a favour by the sounds of it," he grumbled.

Closing his eyes, he took a deep breath himself. Part of him tried to feel what he would feel if he found out Serena did this with some guy but the rushing of aura through his veins quickly put him in check. Calming himself down, he let it wash out of his system.

"Well, what are we doing here still?" Lisia asked as he opened his eyes once more. Looking to Serena, she cocked her head to the side with a flurried brow.

"What're you saying?" he asked for them both.

"Drew may have been the cheater but I'm partly responsible," she replied, "it's only right I own up. It's the least I should do."

"But... don't you want to enjoy the rest of the ball?" Serena asked.

"I feel bad enough about this without adding on a delay," she replied, "my mama use to say don't put off today just because it can wait until tomorrow."

Glancing to see his girlfriend, he knew she didn't want to ruin the event for everyone else but seeing the fire in her eyes, he knew what was coming. She jumped to her feet and with a swipe of her things she started leading the way out of the hotel. Realising they won't be taking time to change out of their fancy formal wear, he scurried to grab his stuff before following the two performers out into the city. Taking a moment to unbutton the top button of his shirt.

"Wait your leaving already?" Swellow asked, flying alongside him. Murkrow taking off to catch up to Serena. "But we'll miss the chance to battle... there's an elite four member in there remember... I wanna battle her. Why not do this other stuff after the battle? Please."

He smiled as he watched his starters Bullet seed smash into Ralts. He's been teleporting around but after a while they got use to his pattern and were able to predict his re-emergence. Feeling his heart pump at the sight of the psychic fairy type attempting to block by crossing his arms over his face.

"Now quick attack into pound!" He hollered.

Geico shot forward and overtook the last few golden seeds he spat out. Running up to the side of their opponent, he swung his tail around.

The combined momentum sent the feelings Pokémon flying. Rolling across the ground, the pure grass type stood in an offensive stance waiting for the result.

Walley's starter slowly pushed himself up and seemed to smirk under the green head piece. His body flashed and several copies ended up surrounding his starter in a complete circle. While he knew which was the original, double team allows them to effortlessly replace themselves which makes it more difficult.

"We've got more tricks up our sleeve then just teleport, Max," Walley informed, smiling widely.

"So do we!" He beamed. "Now Geico use-"

A loud ruckus drew all their attention. Turning to the beach, he found his pure ghost type floating over towards them in a seeming hurry, as a large crowd of beach goers charging behind. Blinking in surprise, he could've sworn he heard some sort of adventure theme softly playing in the background, getting closer as his ghost type decided to move over the water. Stopping to face his rioting mob.

"Alas, my children," Shuppet announced with Walley's Ralts offering psychic translations, "this is the day that you'll always remember as the day that you almost caught captain-" A wave of water splashed up in that moment and drowned him out. Soaking wet, the ghost floated in the same place. "-Shup-Pet."

"We should go before the crowd realises that Shuppet is one of your Pokémon," Walley whispered in his ear.

Nodding in agreement, they turned and set off down the path and into the city. With a quickened pace, the sound of the crowd disappeared behind. Chancing a glance back, they realised no-one was following them... Shuppet materialised right in front of them with a cheesy smile on his face.

"What did you do?" he asked.

"Pet," the ghost type shrugged.

"There's the Shuppet!" A random voice shouted.

Not wasting a single moment, they took off down the street, not wanting to get caught by the mad mob. His glasses threatened to fall off his face as he refused to look back at the presumed crowd stampeding towards them. Pushing them back up, he noticed the ghost type pointing down an alley way.

Without a better option, he dived down the alley and pulled Walley with him. Placing their backs against the wall, both were panting heavily as the mop stormed past, not even bothering to stop or look around. Slouching from relief, he tried to recompose himself. Glancing to his side, he noticed his friend in a similar state with burning red cheeks... their eyes locked and the two of them burst out laughing.

"Is your Shuppet just a part of a cartoon or something?" he asked.

"I think so," he replied, "Ash and Serena tried to warn me about ghost types but it really is something else."

"How come you haven't nicknamed him?" he asked.

"Well, he hasn't been around that long," he shrugged, "so just been brainstorming ideas. Right Shuppet?"

"Pet," he nodded.

"How about Casper?" Walley asked, "it's from a cartoon I-"

"Casper the friendly ghost!" His eyes widened. "But wait, wasn't that a Gastly in the show?"

"I don't think it matters all that much," he shrugged.

"I like it." he turned to his newest team member. "But what do you think?"

"Shup-pet." He shook his head. "Shuppet."

"He says he's wants to go by Shade," Ralts mentally translated.

"Shade?" he asked. "Why Shade?"

"Shup-pupet."

"Because Shadow is a little too on the nose." Ralts translated.

"Great, then Shade it is!" He smiled. "Sorry Walley."

"It's fine, as long as Shuppet likes it," he smiled. The corners of his lips soon dropped though as he turned to the side. "But... well, I guess I should've told you sooner Max but today's our last day in Lilycove. I'm gonna need to get back soon so I can pack."

"Aww man," he sighed, "but I guess it's to be expected. It's been fun hanging out with you though Walley."

"Same," he muttered.

"Maybe next time we meet... we could finish our battle?" he asked.

"I'd like that." The green-haired boy started walking away. He barely made it three steps before stopping. "One more thing."

"Huh?" he mumbled with an eyebrow flicking up. The green-haired boy turned and seemingly skipped back, leaning down his lips touched Max's cheek and his body froze. Rapidly blinking, he tried to process what happened as the boy and his Pokémon disappeared around the corner of the street.

"I'll be looking forward to our next meeting Max!" His voice echoed as he stood still. A tingling numbness travelling over his entire body.

"Wha-" he mumbled.

"Tree."

"Shup."

"Cast Castform," the weather Pokémon floated in front of him in her sunny form. Flickering a fireball in front of his eyes, he gasped and stumbled backwards, hitting the wall as he tried to calm his breathing.

"What was-" He paused, realising she did it to snap him back into reality. "Don't do that! You could've set something on fire."

"Cko," his starter nodded to the man-made Pokémon. Gesturing to his tail, he made a pound motion and pointed up to his face.

"Don't hit me either!" He yelled.

"Shup-pup-pup-pet," the ghost type chuckled.

"Let's just get back to the centre," he grumbled.

Setting out from the alley, he decided it was best to just return his Pokémon. Last thing he'd want is one of the mob to see Shade and reignite the chase or for him to even cause more trouble. Plus... he couldn't deal with their antics right now, his mind focused on the last thing Walley did.

Part of him felt like he should be furious or angry or something, but he wasn't... he thought back to early on in their adventure, after watching Serena's first showcase and how he felt after that. She helped him understand it and even move past it, but his realisation brought so many more thoughts up. He long since accepted he had a crush on the honey-blonde girl but moved past it but if he really feels the same sort tingle now... it can't be.

Almost too quickly he walked up to the back battlefield at the local centre. He found Ash stood off with Swellow perched on his shoulder as Serena, May and... possibly Lisia was closer to the actual building. Frowning at the sight, he noticed his sister stand up and set off inside the centre with the two performers leaving her behind. Pinching his lips together, he closed in on the raven-haired boy first.

"Hey Max." Ash smiled. "Where's Walley?"

Shade stiffed a snorting laugh.

"Erm, I-I mean he had to go," he stuttered, feeling the heat in his cheeks.

"Alright," he grumbled, frowning, "are you feeling alright? The sun might've caught you, your face is all red."

"I-I'm fine." He shook his head to try and force the embarrassment away. "What's going on over there."

"Nothing good, Max," he sighed, "Serena & I will tell you and Brock later. But I think your sister will need some space for now."

"That's fine with me," he mumbled, wanting the exact same. "Hey Ash, did you end up doing that other thing with Serena?"

"No," he replied, "this was more important."

"What was it?" he asked, hoping to change the conversation.

"A star-light boat ride around the dock. I got a small two-person boat rented but this is more important." He pinched his lips together.

Feeling the weight of his romantic plans being trampled and his own emotion turmoil right now, he really didn't want to continue this talk. Without missing a beat, he walked past the boy and kept his distance from the girls as he made his way into the building. His mind flashing back to Walley and the kiss.

May stood on the battlefield outside the Pokémon centre with Bulbasaur in her arms. Watching her other Pokémon hard at work.

Combusken was locked in a one-on-one battle against Mightyena, but it was difficult to say who was winning or not, both getting hits off, respectively. Spoink was bouncing in front of a tree, practising his shadow ball. While greatly improved, it was hardly an easy process for him. Beautifly and Mawile were off to the side, practising a performance. A smile spread over her face as she watched them each hard at work.

"So Bulbasaur, what'cha thinking?" she asked her newest team member. "How would you feel about part-taking in a contest now you've seen the others practising?"

"Saur Bulba."

"You wanna watch one in full first?" she asked, to which the grass poison type nodded. She gave a wide smile, "that's easy enough to do."

"Saur," she purred.

"Then I'll ask Serena if you can sit with them to watch the whole thing," she smiled.

"Hey."

Turning to the side, she found her boyfriend walking towards her with his hands in his pockets. She frowned slightly seeing him in a tux but let her newest team member down so she could continue observing whilst she made her way over to the boy, engulfing him in a hug which he returned.

"I thought you said you was busy today?" she asked, unable to stop the smile from spreading over her face, "and what's with the suit?"

"It was an event my dad hosted for the business, but I slipped out early." He winked. "I'd much rather spend the time with you."

Giggling nervously, she covered her lips as her cheeks burned. He instinctively took her free hand and gave it a gentle squeeze they went on a stroll around the battlefields, just giving off simple chatter and mostly enjoying each other's company. Soon the sight of Serena, Ash and... Lisia? running towards them. A part of her wondered what her friend's showcase rival was doing here or what the hurry was. They soon stopped right in front of them.

"May, we need to talk," Serena explained, "alone."

"What's up?" she asked.

"It sounds like they're trying to cause trouble," Drew muttered, mostly under his breath.

"I wouldn't start if I was you," Lisia loomed over him.

"Leave him alone," she interjected.

"Please May, this is really important," Serena practically begged with a quiver in her voice.

"Alright fine." She rolled her eyes. Leaning forward, she placed a small peck on Drew's cheek. "I'll catch up with ya later."

His nose wrinkled and pointed up slightly with a frown but before she could question it, he replaced it with a typical smirk. Inwardly smirking, she guessed she just caught him off guard as he set off away from the ground. She couldn't help but notice Ash standing off in the direction Drew left, as if ensuring he didn't return as the two girls lead her over to the benches. Crossing her arms, she turned back to the two females to see what was so important to talk to her about.

"Take a seat." Serena gestured to the bench. Rolling her eyes, she walked over and sat herself down. The honey-blonde girl squatted right in front of her with Lisia just off to the side. "May... there's no easy way to tell you this."

"What's going on?" she asked, "did someone get hurt?"

"Not yet," Lisia muttered.

"May..." Serena paused, making sure their eyes were locked together. Her hands covered her own, gently massaging them in a soothing manner. "Ash and I went to the showcase ball earlier and every performer that took part needed to take a date with them."

"Yeah," she shrugged, "what's that got to do with me."

"I also needed a date," Lisia interjected, "but unlike Serena, I don't have someone ready on the whim for such an event. So, in my exploration to find someone to accompany me, I ran into Drew. We got talking and-"

"I'm not listening to this." She went to stand up, but Serena blocked her exit.

"Please May, you need to hear this," she pleaded, "it's just like with Sakura back in Rustboro."

"We already agreed to leave that." She forcefully stamped her foot.

"Because we only had her word against Drew's but now, I can show you the truth," she replied.

"How can you show her?" the turquoise haired girl asked.

"Erm, well, you see Lisia, I have some psychic capabilities." She chuckled nervously. "Will you let me show you, May, please."

Narrowing her eyes as they studied the honey-blonde girls face, she tried to find the deception but couldn't. Chewing on her trembling bottom lip, part of her wanted to just leave the conversation and continue on like nothing happened. As the corners of her lips dropped slightly, she sighed and sat back down. The older girl's eyes burned with psychic powers, and she reached up. Poking the centre of her forehead, everything went black.

A grey outline became the surroundings as she found herself stood next to Ash in some sort of fancy big hall. It didn't take a genius to guess this was the place the showcase ball was being held. She seemed to be holding Ash's hand as the moved across the room. Glancing ahead she noticed the older girl's rival entering the room, with her arm looped around none-other than Drew's.

"Hey guys, it's great to see you here," Lisia greeted with a wide smile on her face but her eyes focused on Drew instead. His brows were slightly narrowed, and a seemingly hidden smirk fought to stay off his lips. "I want to introduce you to my date for this event, Drew Shū."

"We've met," Ash growled.

"Well Drew here was such a darling," she gushed, "just when I thought I'd need to cancel, he swooped in and saved the day."

She hated to say it, but the way Lisia spoke sound much like herself. He had a way to just make her feel special, like out of everyone he could be with, he chose her. Tears stung her eyes as she tried to turn away but couldn't.

"Really?" Serena grinded her teeth.

"Is something the matter?" Lisia asked.

"Not yet," she growled.

"Serena?" Lisia asked.

Everything went black once more and the background changed. It remerged as a still grey memory of the same hall, and they seemed to be dancing around the floor in a massive group. She saw some guy who she didn't reconsign and she bowed towards. Rotating around in the circle, she found herself in front of the green-haired boy, who wore a cocky smirk, holding his hand out for her.

She could feel the disgust sizzling in the pit of her stomach which she guessed was Serena's feelings but also the reluctance with the nagging at the back of her mind to keep calm and not cause a scene which would ruin it for everyone. Her hand landed in his and she tightened her grip in a more aggressive manner. The two of them entered a dance as his hand went to her waist but the tingle of ESP prevented him from completing the loop.

"Is something wrong here?" he asked.

"You know exactly what the matter is," Serena hissed, "how would May feel if she knew you was here?"

"What she doesn't know won't hurt her." He dismissed. "Did you expect me to pass up the chance date Hoenn's superstar? Or dance with Johto's top coordinator for that matter."

"If we weren't in a public setting then I'd show you exactly what you deserve for treating someone like that," she replied, "she'll be heartbroken to see this."

"She isn't getting in here," he shrugged, "so unless you decide to cause her pain then I have nothing to worry about."

"You expect me to keep your sordid dirty secret for you?" she growled.

"No but I do expect you to understand your as responsible for her hurt, if not more so," he smirked.

"Monnaie!"

As she pulled away and moved around in the circle, the world once again faded to black. Blinking rapidly, she found herself back in the real world with Serena's shimmering blue eyes staring back. Her brows pulled together with a frown on her lips

"I am so sorry, May," Serena sighed as she took a seat next to her, embracing her in a hug.

The real world faded back as the pit in her stomach rumbled. Blinking, her vision became blurred as her mouth dried. She tried to say something, anything, but nothing could make its way out. Each thump of her heart echoed through her body as it ached in every direction. As the tear trickled down her cheek, her bottom lip trembled as her voice came out in a meke, pained squeeze. Crumbling down, she caught sight of the honey-blonde girl taking the seat next to her.

Serena's hand rubbed her back as a hand engulfed her two which collapsed together, which she assumed was Lisia. Letting the pain wash over her as the sobs escaped through her body. She couldn't be sure how long they sat there. Something softly landed on her head, and she turned to see Beautifly.

Offering a small smile to her first caught Pokémon, she glanced back down and found Spoink, Mawile and Bulbasaur all by her feet. The dark-furred paws were also there, and she looked up to see Mightyena in front of her, with a sad smile and wide eyes direct on her with both brows pulled together. Combusken was off to the side but once she locked eyes with him, he turned to the side.

"I-I just wanna go for a walk," she whispered, standing up. One by one she recalled her team until just Mightyena remained. Seeing his expression, she sighed and let him accompany her as she set out into the centre, leaving the two females. Her hand stroking his fur for comfort.

A silence between them was more than enough, she couldn't bring herself to speak and was glad she didn't have the ability to do so with her own Pokémon right now. Every so often, Mightyena would glance to her but just his presence helped keep her calm. They continued until entering the centre's lobby.

"May-kins!"

She spun to the sound of her voice and blinked rapidly. Swaying his hips as he walked over was none other than her rival in the Verdanturf with a Zangoose of all Pokémon by his side. The flamboyant teen stood over her with his hands clasped together.

"I'm so glad I finally found you again, May-kins." He grasped his two hands over her's. "I'm so sorry for the Verdanturf contest. I behaved horribly and never should've won. Could you ever find it in your heart to forgive me?"

"Yeah, whatever." She shook her head. Not really having the energy to deal with this right now.

"You can really forgive me?!" He exclaimed, engulfing her in a hug. The low growl from her dark type caused him to let go and she stumbled slightly, using the bite Pokémon to steady herself. "I'm so thankful! Your just the best!"

"Right," she mumbled.

"And let me introduce you to my little sweetie-pie, Zangoose!" He reached over and brought the normal type over in a side hug. She couldn't help but notice how much shorter this one is compared to Serena's, along with not having the dried-blood-eye-scar.

"You might want to be careful; Ash has a Seviper, and I know they don't get on," she replied.

"Thanks for the tip, hun." He winked. "Now since I still feel so bad about this whole thing, let me give you a little info."

"No, no, you don't need to do anything." She grumbled stepping back behind her dark type.

"It's just about little sweetie-pie here, he's very much a defensive battler," he explained, "if you ever face one then get right up close and deliver a series of hits. It's the best way to get one over and just keep moving since they are super slow."

Giving a small nod, she tightened her fist into Mightyena's fur. Following his lead, they set off towards her room. As she disappeared out of the out of the lobby, she frowned and grinded her teeth. Harley might be acting forgiveful but after seeing Serena's Zangoose battle, she knows exactly how they fight... and it's the complete opposite to how he just described... given how Drew's acted, she isn't about to just blindly believe this guy... not in the slightest.
