A/N: Another A-B-C Challenge. I've been churning these quickly. (Jeez, why can't you be like this with an actual story?) Whatever, here's the A-B-C Challenge with Xan. Both the original take and the take from GbNF.
A-B-C Challenge: Xan (Original Version)

Initially, I paired him with Setsuka. At the time, I thought Setsuka was the best girl. Nowadays, I don't believe that anymore since the best girls are the Alexandra sisters then Xianghua. But Sophi is married in lore, so she's out. Cass or Xianghua are the best options, in all honesty. Out of SC, Kunimitsu is the gut pairing. (Either one; the original or her daughter) I can see Xan (This take, anyway) curing Shiki of worshiping Yuga. Iroha can be a comedic romantic pairing. Or he can crack Mina's stoic expression by being with her during her darkest moments.

Xan strikes me as a guy who doesn't necessarily need love but won't outright deny it either. It will take the right person to love him through his faults and scarred psyche. I agree that Setsuka would not help at all. Perhaps Xianghua can mend the tatters of his heart. The Kunimitsus are very interesting, knowing their occupations of being thieves.

This take is challenging since Xan's overall demeanor is much darker. Anyone soft and motherly will work since another person who acts similar to him will only relapse his depression. Unless you're Kim, cheery people annoy Xan. Sindel would be a fantastic pairing for this take of Xan. People who are persistent enough to break the walls down are also good pairings. Sareena ironically would be a good pairing since she has arguably the best redemption arc out of all the MK girls (I say arguably because NRS didn't capitalize on it)
Out of SC, Jun, Jun, Jun. It's almost perfect. Julia Chang's a solid pick too. Litchi from BB and Millia Rage from GG are dark horse picks, but they can be excellent pairings if things work out. (Litchi is an example of being persistent, continually breaking down Xan's emotional fortress. If Millia isn't too standoffish, the pair can get a kindred spirit vibe similar to Xan and Ivy that can erupt into a fiery romance)

I was not expecting to see Sindel's name for a possible romance with Xan. It could definitely work to a degree, as both are fighting inner demons. But Sareena was even more shocking until you explained it in the paragraph above. You're correct that NRS did not capitalize on her redemption arc. The other pairings mentioning Jun, Julia Chang, and Litchi are good choices for the reasons you stated. Yet, I'll lean more towards Jun because of her calming presence.
