Once I got the news about my voice, I didn't think to speak. The sound of it was grating against the ears. I asked my brother for a couple weeks of leave. He seemed worried but granted it nonetheless. A trip to see my father would hopefully bring my spirits up. Well that was my thoughts days ago. Father's home was grand but small on New Vulcan. The same scarf mother gave me was wrapped around my neck to protect it. Since she passed on, I rather see the scarf as a comfort item. A pair of footsteps caught my attention as they stepped up the steps to my location. I stayed staring out of the window seeing buildings being erected to create Vulcan.
"T'Saraphina. They moved his sentence to tomorrow at noon."
I tore my sight from the window to stare at my father. His looming figure dressed in his Vulcan council robes gave me a sense of familiarity. Sarek placed a hand on his daughter's shoulder. He spoke up, "When Spock mentioned you have not spoken since you've gotten news about your voice not returning to normal, I did not expect you to keep quiet during your stay."
I placed a hand ontop of my father's lingering hand. I gave it a light squeeze. Sarek returned the squeeze to my shoulder. He asked, "Would you like to join me on a walk?"
I nodded lifting myself from my window seat. Sarek held out his elbow and his daughter looped her arm through. His free hand rested on top of my hanging hand. Father ushered me forward lightly.
I watched as builders pulled up pilings up. Some councilmen and women were walking through the sooner or later finished city. I didn't realize we were coming up on a small home just outside of the city till we stopped at the door. Sarek felt my questioning gaze and answered, "We are going to visiting a friend."
The door slowly opened and a familiar voice piped up, "Ah, you're here. Come in, come in."
Sarek released his daughter's arm, "Actually, I must be going. I have an arrangement to go to."
Spock Prime nodded, "Very well. T'Saraphina, come in. I just brewed some spice tea."
A soft smile graced my lips giving a light nod. Sarek looked between the two, "I'll take my farewell. See you at home, T'Saraphina."
Sarek left the two of us alone. Spock Prime glanced over at his alternate sister and moved to the side, "I'll pour you a cup and we can talk."
I entered the older Spock's home. I took in the different but yet similar style to my current brother's apartment. Spock Prime disappeared into his kitchen to pour two cups of spice tea. I took this moment to sit on Spock Prime's couch. The older Vulcan came back with two tea cups. Gently, he handed me the cup and I blew the hot steam away. He sat down on the other side of the couch. Spock Prime nursed his cup before he started to speak, "Your father told me of your situation..."
He gestured to his throat. He continued knowing the woman next to him wouldn't try to speak, "Do you remember my sister from the memory I showed you?"
I nodded. I took a sip of my tea. A breath of happiness from drinking Vulcan tea again escaped from my lips. Spock Prime explained, "She was self conscious of her voice. That T'Saraphina went to the length of learning Vulcan sign language. Unfortunately it hurt her Star Fleet career. They didn't demote her or promoted her. She was assigned to heavy clerical work that is only for lower ranks. It ragged on her for having those orders when she was Captain."
He took a moment to sip on his tea. I stayed silent to listen to his words. Spock Prime placed his cup on the coffee table in the middle of his living room. His wise eyes studied my form as I took another sip of my tea. He continued on, "Her significant other and her had a strained relationship. He tried to encourage her to speak to at least him but she physically showed him through several hand motions on why she couldn't. I was torn between the two as each were at their wits end."
My lips turned into a frown. Spock Prime could see the emotions run through his alternate sister's face. He scooted closer, "I feel it might be better to show you. Do you mind?"
I shook my head and I felt his large hands position themselves on the sides of my face. Immediately, I was tossed into his memory.
A middle aged Spock crossed his arms. His sister stood off to the side with her arms crossed. A familiar looking man was facing her back. A concerned but frustrated look was on his face. Spock spoke, "T'Saraphina. We both, even mother and father, would like you to speak again. It is only logical for your voice to result the way it is due to Serock's violence."
The sandy haired man huffed, "That's not helping, Spock. As Spock was trying to say T'Saraphina, I don't care what your voice sounds like. It's still you. You hate the position you are in right now."
The man moved closer to Spock's sister. He lightly placed his hands on her shoulders. Luckily for Vulcan hearing, Spock was able to hear the light voice coming from his best friend.
"I miss hearing you. I don't know how I am going to go through with this if I cannot hear your voice. I would like to hear it for this."
T'Saraphina turned around. Her angled brows were knitted together. Her brother's matched hers as he was confused on where his friend was going. Spock's brows raised when he saw his friend go on one knee and dug out a velvet box. Spock's brown eyes flickered back and forth between the two people. He started to ask, "Jim what are you-."
A raspy voice stopped him in his tracks. It was quiet but both men heard it, "Really? Even with this voice?"
It was out of sheer surprise when she decided to speak. Jim's signature tilted smile appeared on his face, "Of course. I told you I love you and that means everything about you even with your new voice. Will you?"
Spock took a step forward, "When were you going to-."
Once again, the older Vulcan was interrupted by his sister's sudden tears streaming from her face as she nodded. The two people were ignoring the older Vulcan and he felt out of place.
Spock Prime removed his fingers from my face. The remaining emotions flowed through me. It was happiness but with a hint of pouting. I reached up to touch my throat. I could still feel like the man's grip was still on it. I swallowed. I tried, "Why that memory?"
I winced at the sound of my voice. Spock Prime clasped his hands around mine. He never looked away. He explained, "That was the thing to get her to speak. I felt not only the proposal helped but Jim loved her. He wanted to show her despite her voice he still loved her and he wanted to see her succeed. According to your father, he spoke with Spock and both showed concern when you suddenly turned mute. Spock addressed to our father he felt your voice was fine and the senior starship team did not care for the sudden change of voice."
My lips turned into a firm line. He gave a light squeeze to my hands before pulling them away. I winced, "Is that Jim..."
My voice trailed off. Spock Prime nodded, "The very same."
I started slowly, "I do not want to be placed in the same position at your sister with Star Fleet."
Spock Prime's eyebrows raised. The raspiness of my voice made me close my eyes. My brows furrowed together. I continued, "I do not like my voice but I would try to work on it."
A smile graced Spock Prime's face. I sipped on my tea. Spock Prime piped up, "I think your brother, father and crew would be glad to hear you are willing to talk again. Would you like to walk with me into the city? I need to pick up some groceries."
I nodded. Spock Prime stood up to gather his key card for his home. I stood up to follow him out. Spock Prime held out his elbow for me to take just like my father did earlier. Spock Prime commented, "I'm glad you decided to speak up and not keep quiet."
