Chapter 17
It's Wednesday morning and the boys are eating cereal for breakfast. Alvin is having trouble keeping his eyes open after the sleepless night. He is about ready to fall asleep at the table when a knock on the door startles him.
"Alvin, could you answer that?", Dave asks his oldest.
"Okay," Alvin responds tiredly.
Alvin goes and answers the door. When he opens the door, he sees his old enemy, Dr. Frankenstein.
"What do you want, you nutcase?", Alvin asks with disdain.
"I saw you in my dream last night. My lab was destroyed and I know you had to have something to do with it you lousy chipmunk!", the doctor responds.
"Why would I destroy your lab? Me and my brothers haven't been back there in years. I would have no reason to go back there after what you did to me," Alvin says.
Dave, Simon, and Theodore come to the door after hearing the commotion.
"It's you, what are you here for?," Simon says to Dr. Frankenstein.
"I had a dream last night in my lab that I had your brother, but he turned into some burned monster that set my lab at that park on fire and cut me. When I woke up, my lab was actually on fire and I had to run quickly before it exploded. Since I saw Alvin first, I thought he had something to do with it since he would have a reason to do something like that to me," Dr. Frankenstein responded.
Alvin notices the cuts on the doctor and is overcome with dread. He then asks, "Did this monster have knives on his right hand, wear a red and green sweater, and a dirty brown fedora?"
"Yes, he did," Dr. Frankenstein answers. He then asks, "How could you know?"
Alvin answers, "My brothers, Dave, and I have seen him in our dreams too. His name is Freddy Krueger."
"Prove that you're telling the truth," the doctor said accusingly.
"Fine, I will," Alvin says. He then removes the bandages from his right arm and shows the healing cuts he got from a previous attack.
"How's this? You think I would do this to myself?", Alvin asked.
Dr. Frankenstein realizes that Alvin is telling the truth when he sees that the cuts on Alvin's arm are identical to his own cuts.
"Okay, so you're telling the truth," the doctor admitted. He then says, "What am I going to do? Where will I go? My lab is gone."
Dave then says, "There is an empty house a couple of blocks from here. We still have plenty of money leftover from the boys' last tour, so I can get it for you."
"Thank you very much," Dr. Frankenstein says gratefully.
"Dave, why would you help this creep after what he did to me and tried to do to Simon and Theodore?", Alvin asked.
"I know about what he has done, but we are a family that helps people when they are in need, and he is in need," Dave says.
Alvin sighs and scowls at the doctor.
Dave then says to Dr. Frankenstein, "However, if you try any of your tricks with me or my boys, I'll see to it you are kicked out of there."
"Okay fine. I promise I won't experiment on Alvin or his brothers," the doctor says.
"Good, then it's settled," Dave says. He then adds, "Now remember what I said: if you try anything with the boys or me, you're out of there."
"I'll remember," Dr. Frankenstein says as he and Alvin exchange scowls.
The boys are later dropped off at the school where they meet up with the Chipettes.
"Apparently Krueger has gone after yet another potential victim," Alvin says to the girls.
"Why do you say that?", Brittany asks.
"This potential victim is moving into an empty house a couple of blocks away from our house and he was attacked last night by Freddy, as was I," Alvin responds.
"Who is this person?", asks Jeanette.
"Dr. Frankenstein," Alvin bitterly answers.
Jeanette says, "We can see why you would be upset at this considering you told us what he did to you years before, but he was still attacked by Freddy."
"I know. The crazy doctor thought that it was me at first in his dream since he said Krueger disguised himself as me before his lab was destroyed," Alvin says.
"Where would he get the money to buy that house?", Eleanor asks.
"Dave is giving some leftover money from our last tour to him so he can buy the house, under the condition that he doesn't try any of his antics on me, Simon, or Theodore," Alvin answers.
"You know how Dave wants to help people in need," Simon adds.
"We know. But it still doesn't quite sit right with us that Dave would help a creep like Dr. Frankenstein," Brittany responds.
Simon looks at the clock and says, "It's almost time for class, we'll talk more at lunch."
"Okay, we'll see you later," Eleanor replies.
At the abandoned house, Dr. Frankenstein has fallen asleep at a table after he and Dave went to purchase the house. The doctor is still tired after his sleepless night.
"Hi Doc. Let's play," a raspy voice says in the doctor's ear. Dr. Frankenstein opens his eyes and sees Freddy smiling evilly at him. Freddy then stabs the table with his knives and says, "You're in my playhouse now and I'll make this fun...for me," before laughing evilly.
Dr. Frankenstein gasps and wakes up. He quickly looks around and says to himself, "That monster is probably never going to let me sleep."
Later on back at the school, it's lunchtime. Nathan is talking with the Chipmunks and Chipettes.
"So Freddy came after you disguised as some weird doctor that you dealt with years ago?", Nathan asked Alvin.
"Yes and Freddy also went after the actual doctor and that doctor thought it was me because Freddy was disguised as me," Alvin answers.
Alvin also adds, "I have also had trouble staying awake because after Krueger came after me last night, I was too scared to go back to sleep."
"We all can understand that since we have all dealt with Freddy Krueger," Nathan says.
"I find it weird that Freddy is seemingly targeting my drama class since 2 of his victims were in my drama class," Brittany speaks up.
Alvin responds, "I think it's a coincidence that Mark and Caroline were in your class because Freddy seemingly doesn't care who he kills. He just kills whoever he feels like killing."
"Definitely true since it's clear anyone could be next," Simon adds.
"I just hope it's not one of us," Jeanette says.
Nathan adds, "Even with as tough as I am, Freddy still scares the living daylights out of me."
"He especially has that effect on Theodore," Alvin says.
"Alvin, don't embarrass him like that, he can't help that he is the way he is," Simon says defensively.
"It's true, I am afraid of a number of things, especially Freddy Krueger," Theodore then says.
"Theo I wasn't trying to embarrass you, I was just pointing that out," Alvin says.
"I know you weren't because you've seen for yourself how much Freddy frightens me," Theodore responds.
"He definitely has that effect on all of us," Brittany says.
Later on in the study hall period in the library, Alvin, still struggling to stay awake as he is doing some homework, begins nodding off. He startles himself back up and looks at his textbook. The text begins moving around strangely and starts forming into the shape of a hand.
Alvin quickly realizes he is actually asleep and starts trying to wake up. "Wake up! Wake up!", Alvin exclaims to himself. The now formed hand in the book reaches out and grabs Alvin by the throat.
Freddy then partially comes out of the book with his left hand still firmly around Alvin's throat.
With an evil smile, Freddy rasps, "You flunk...at living!", before letting out a raspy evil laugh and goes to slash Alvin with his knives.
Alvin wakes up with a scream and everyone else looks his way.
"Are you okay?", the librarian asked.
"Yes, I just got startled," Alvin answers.
"Okay good, you seemed scared by something," the librarian responds.
Alvin says, "I just nodded off and had a little dream, that's all."
"Okay that's good," the librarian responds.
The rest of the school day goes by smoothly for the Chipmunks and Chipettes.
Later at the Seville house, Alvin is talking with Simon and Theodore.
"I fell asleep in the library and Freddy came after me again. We have to stop him because we can't keep living like this," Alvin says.
Simon responds, "Unfortunately I figured that's what happened when I heard you scream in the library. He could be trying to get you extremely tired to where you'll go into a really deep sleep."
"If that happens to any of us, we'll basically be free victims for Freddy," Theodore puts in.
"Anyone that happens to will definitely be a free victim," Alvin replies.
Overhearing the conversation, Dave asks, "So Alvin, Freddy came after you in study hall?"
Alvin answered, "Yes he did. I fell asleep due to not being able to go back to sleep last night after Freddy came after me."
Dave says, "This is a predicament since if someone goes to sleep, Freddy Krueger can come after them."
"I know. That's why sometimes we're afraid to go to sleep," Theodore says.
"Obviously this is really on your mind today. Maybe try doing what homework you have and get some studying done to take your minds off of Freddy," Dave says.
"I can't believe I'm saying this but that's actually a good idea," Alvin replies.
The boys spend a lot of time studying and doing what homework they have left.
Later on at the Miller house, the girls are finishing what homework they had as well as getting some studying done when Ms. Miller calls out, "Girls, dinner's ready!"
At the table, Jeanette says, "We know Alvin fell asleep in study hall period and Freddy came after him."
"Is he okay?", Ms. Miller asks with concern.
Eleanor answers, "Thankfully he's okay. Freaked out but okay."
"That's good to hear," Ms. Miller says.
"I don't know what we're going to do. Freddy Krueger keeps coming after us and we can't sleep," Brittany says.
"Trust me, I know how you feel. There have been times where I'm afraid to go to sleep after Freddy came after me," Ms. Miller explains.
"We know, and we hope you don't become his next victim," Jeanette says.
"I'm hoping this creep doesn't kill anyone else, period," Ms. Miller says.
Later at the Seville house, after the boys have dinner and watch some TV to further try to take their minds off Freddy, it is bedtime.
"I know you're scared, but at least try to get some sleep tonight," Dave says to the boys.
"I don't know how successful we'll be Dave," Alvin responds.
"Hopefully successful enough to be ready for school tomorrow. Goodnight fellas," Dave says.
"Goodnight Dave," the boys respond. Dave then goes to bed himself.
After fighting the urge to sleep, the Chipmunks give in and are able to go to sleep.
At the Miller house, Ms. Miller has just tucked the girls in for the night before she too goes to bed.
Later on, Brittany is woken up by an awful smell. As she is looking for the source of the smell, she comes across a horrifying sight: a girl bleeding from her chest and neck standing over her.
Brittany screams and then quickly realizes who the girl is.
"Caroline?", Brittany murmurs.
Caroline then tries to grab Brittany. Brittany quickly darts out of her bed and screams out, "You're dead! You can't be here!"
Caroline moans, "I can do better than that." She then starts coming toward Brittany.
Brittany, struck with intense fear, backs up as Caroline staggers her way. Caroline then sings, "One, two Freddy's coming for you."
Brittany opens the bedroom door and runs out and then down the stairs. Caroline, at the top of the stairs sings, "Three, four better lock your door."
Brittany then starts saying to herself, "I'm dreaming, I need to wake up! I'm dreaming, I need to wake up!" She then hears another set of footsteps and sees Ruth staggering towards her from the living room. Brittany screams at the fact that Ruth is bleeding from her chest and her eyes are missing.
"Five, six grab your crucifix," Ruth sings as she comes toward Brittany. Brittany tries to open the front door, but the knob burns her hand and, with Ruth blocking her way to the living room, runs into the kitchen.
Brittany is met in the kitchen by the slashed and burned figure of Mark, who also starts staggering towards her.
"Seven, eight gonna stay up late," Mark sings as he walks toward Brittany. She again screams and tries to open the back door, only to get grabbed from behind. She looks up and sees that Freddy has grabbed her.
"Nine, ten never sleep again," Freddy snarls with a demented smile.
"No! No! No!", Brittany yells.
As Caroline, Ruth, and Mark stagger towards Brittany, Freddy, who has a firm hold of her, says, "Looks like they're dying to get to know you better. Let me help them out by having you join them."
Freddy raises his right hand and laughs a raspy evil laugh and goes to slash Brittany as she screams.
Brittany wakes up in her bed screaming and quickly looks around. Ms. Miller, hearing the scream, runs into the bedroom and sees Brittany shaking with fear and tears in her eyes.
"My goodness! Brittany what happened?", Ms. Miller asked with great concern.
Brittany runs over to her mother figure and firmly hugs her.
"It was awful! Freddy Krueger came after me again and he even had his victims come for me too!", Brittany sobs. Ms. Miller then bends down to hug Brittany back and soothingly says, "It's okay now. They didn't get you."
Jeanette and Eleanor come to their older sister and join in the comforting hug.
"Was it Caroline, Ruth, and Mark that joined Freddy?", Eleanor asks.
"Yes, it was. They were cut, rotting, bleeding, and in Mark's case burned. They sang that rhyme as they came after me," Brittany stammers.
"You mean the 'one, two Freddy's coming for you' thing?", Eleanor asked.
"Yes, that song," Brittany answers.
"Well it's over now, you're okay dear," Ms. Miller says comfortingly. She then says, "I know you're terribly frightened, but you have school tomorrow so you need some sleep."
"I know," Brittany replies.
"If you're scared, you can come sleep with me," Ms. Miller offers.
"Thanks, but I'll try to sleep here," Brittany responds.
"Okay, but if you change your mind, you can come to my bed. Goodnight again girls," Ms. Miller says.
The girls get back in their beds and say, "Goodnight again Ms. Miller."
Ms. Miller heads back to bed, still concerned about Brittany.
In the bedroom, Jeanette and Eleanor, concerned about their older sister, are able to go back to sleep while Brittany is too scared to sleep for the rest of the night.
