Chapter 1-First Day
As I walk into the hospital, I see people getting rushed to trauma rooms and OR's, feeling the excitement to jump in, I hurriedly get to the intern's lounge. There I found an empty locker, and empty my bookbag in it. Getting changed into my scrubs, a handsome man comes next to me, startled, I inch away feeling insecure and alone, as everyone talks to their peers quickly making friends. "Hey, im Derek." says the handsome man next to me. "Hope" I replied. "Hope for what…" he says, confused. "That's my name. "Hope" I exclaimed. "Oh, my bad. That's a very unique name." he quickly said. "Listen, I don't really have anyone to stick with, to survive my internship. Do you wanna maybe hangout sometime?" he said with caution. "You know what? Sure." I replied, happy I finally had someone to talk to. "Come one people, you have rounds." says a harsh voice. Everyone hurries out of the room and to their assigned residents, who are with their assigned attendings until we are shipped off to another. Coincidentally, Derek and I are assigned the same resident. "Hello people, I'm Dr. Mindy Adkin, I am your resident for your internship. I have five rules. Memorize them. Rule number one: Don't bother sucking up. I hate you. That's not gonna change. Trauma protocol, phone list, pagers, nurses will page you. You will answer every page at a run. A run! That's rule number two. Your first shift starts now and lasts 48 hours. You're interns, grunts, nobodies, bottom of the surgical food chain. You run labs, write orders, work every second night until you drop, and don't complain. On-call rooms. Attendings hog them. Sleep when you can where you can, which brings me to rule number three. If I'm sleeping, don't wake me unless your patient is dying. Rule four: The dying patient better not be dead when I get there. Not only will you have killed someone, you woke me for no reason. Are we clear?" I raise my hand, "what?" "You said five rules. That was only four." "Rule number five: When I move, you move." As Dr. Adkins finishes her sentence, she gets a page, and runs out of the room, leaving us interns behind. She turns around, "Are you coming or are you just gonna sit there like a sack of potatoes?" She exclaims. We dash after her, worried how this is gonna go.
