Regarding this chapter:
I split this chapter into 2 parts otherwise it would have been really long.

Inukimi's Story
Part One

Inukimi stood in the gardens, feeling the soft breeze upon her face. Lifting her face up towards the sun, she took a deep inhale and allowed the warmth of the sun to fill her being.

Everything was right in her little world today.

It was only moments ago that a guard had come to give her the news that her mate and son had just left the palace to find their son's mate.

Sesshomaru's mate would finally join their family, her son would finally have his mate at his side and hopefully soon in the future they would have pups.

Inukimi was ecstatic to have this happy news delivered to her. With the future of the youkai being precarious, this one bit of news would be something she could enjoy.

Walking the path of the gardens, Inukimi pondered on what the future held for her son. She knew Sesshomaru would be a just ruler. She and Toga had both done their part in raising him to be a smart but calculating ruler. He kept himself poised but also stoic so no enemy would be able to read him or know what he was planning. Sesshomaru was taught to always be two steps ahead of his enemies.

Sesshomaru would be a fine king one day with a beautiful mate by his side.

Inukimi watched as a small butterfly crossed her path and fly off into the distance. The lady of the west turned and headed back into the palace.

Checking on the servants and seeing to the morning palace routines, Inukimi realized it was soon past mid-day. She was just heading towards the north side of the palace when she sensed Toga's youkai come roaring back.

Inukimi could tell something was off. He never returned in full youkai nature.

Rushing towards the front doors of the palace, Inukimi rushed out to find Toga gathering his men and heading towards the stables.

"I heard that you and our son had gone out to find his mate, did something happen?" Inukimi asked with a concerned expression once she had reached Toga.

Inukimi listened as Toga explained the scene that he and Sesshomaru came upon.

Upon hearing the news of her son's deceased mate, Inukimi clutched her chest, a grimace crossing her beautiful face.

"Sesshomaru…" Inukimi whispered out.

Inukimi felt Toga's arm wrap her, her mate taking a deep inhale of her scent.

"He is too young to be without a mate….what we will do?" Inukimi asked looking her mate in the eye.

"I do not know…." Toga sighed out.

"I came back to gather men to return to her village and see a proper burial be performed. She deserves that much."

Inukimi nodded and then asked, "Where is Sesshomaru?"

Toga shook his head, "He has left. I did not stop him. There is nothing to say to comfort his vexed heart."

"I shall accompany you and your men to her village. I wish to see who our son's mate would had been."

Toga nodded and turned to see that his men were near complete in loading the wagons with supplies.

"My lord, we are ready to leave whenever you are." One of Toga's men stated, bowing low.

Toga nodded and called his men to attention.

After explaining where to find the village, Toga then stated, "Lady Inukimi and I will go on ahead to safeguard the village while we await your arrival. Considering where the sun is, I would expect you all to make it by early dawn tomorrow. I expect you all to push through the night, no rest until you reach the village. Is that understood?"

"Yes, my lord!" Toga's men answered.

Inukimi watched as Toga turned towards her, "Are you ready?"

Inukimi shook her head confirming and they both transformed into their true nature and set off.

Both youkai raced towards the decaying village to find it still undisturbed as when Toga left it. Returning to their humanoid form, Inukimi followed her mate as he led her to the deceased body of Sesshomaru's mate.

Inukimi knelt next to the human woman and softly sighed, "She was beautiful."

"She was," Toga stated while looking towards the rest of the village.

Inukimi looking towards her husband and seeing that he was not looking her way, quietly reached out a hand to touch the human woman's forehead. Inukimi was merely curious to see if anything would happen. What did happen, she was not expecting:

"Rin! It's almost time to leave, are you ready?" A petite woman with long chestnut color hair called out, looking down a long hall. A young girl, who could be no older than eight years of age then suddenly appeared.

"Yes, mommy!" The small human child answered as she came running down the hall wearing strange clothing, her hair matching the same chestnut color as the older woman.

Inukimi found herself in a strange place. She didn't recognize any of her surroundings. She was in some sort of home. She looked towards the two humans, the mother bending down and helping her daughter put on a strange-looking kimono.

"Now Rin, be careful. It's raining out, stay close to me."

"Yes, mommy!" The small child known as Rin said, looking up and beaming at her mother.

"Are both my favorite girls ready?" A human male suddenly asked appearing from outside, also wearing a strange-looking kimono. His kimono extended over his head and appeared to be dripping water.

"Yes dear, are you sure it's ok to be driving in this weather? It looks bad outside." The human woman asked looking outside at the pouring rain.

"Megumi it's perfectly fine. We'll take our time driving, that's all. We don't have to check into 6 p.m. tonight, so we have plenty of time to get there."

Megumi looked outside and then looked towards her husband, "Itsuki, you promise you will take your time in this weather?"

"Yes, yes, now come. The sooner we leave, the sooner we arrive." Itsuki said as he picked up the human child and pulling the kimono over her head.

"Is my little Jewel ready to go to the beach and build sandcastles?" Itsuki said, lifting his daughter high in the air, spinning her.

"Yes, daddy!" Rin answered while giggling at her father.

Itsuki then tucked Rin to his chest and turned and grabbed his wife's hand and led them out the strange-looking house into the pouring rain.

Inukimi watched as the family faded away, everything turning into darkness, hearing Itsuki voice saying before fading away into nothingness, "Now remember the first we do when we get to the beach is….."

Inukimi then suddenly felt a strong pulling sensation in her chest, the pulling so strong it caused the youkai woman to bend over in pain and cry out. Then the pain was gone just as it had come. Inukimi looked up from her crouched position and saw herself in another strange setting. This time everything was bright white and smelled strongly of something unearthly. Inukimi put her hand over her nose to mask the smell.

Turning around, she found herself looking down at the small human child known as Rin. She had bandages wrapped around her head, odd-looking contraptions coming out of her body leading to an odd-looking pole next to where she laid. Inukimi noted the bruises on the small human child's face and that one of her eyes appeared to be swollen shut.

Inukimi's heart broke at seeing how pitiful the small child looked.

'Where are her parents?' Inukimi thought to herself, reaching out a hand wanting to soothe the child but found her hand simply passed through her.

Hearing voices, Inukimi's head snapped up.

"Both her parents died, her father was already dead by the time help arrived and her mother died here during surgery." A man said in a white long looking kimono holding onto some sort of ledger.

"She had no other family either." Another man said all in black with an odd-looking black hat on as well.

"The poor girl…." The man in black said, sighing.

"What will happen to her?" The man in white said, walking to Rin and softly touching her forehead.

"Well with no family, she will be placed in foster care. Hopefully, she will find a family that will adopt her. She's cute, that should help her."

Inukimi then suddenly found herself engulfed in darkness as both men and Rin disappeared from her vision.

Floating in the void of blackness, Inukimi focused her thoughts on the little human child. She knew she was important and needed to get back to her.

Inukimi felt herself dropped harshly onto solid ground falling on her hands and knees. She shook her head to regain her equilibrium, looking around she now found herself in a forest.

Standing up and dusting herself off, Inukimi looked around and saw no one. She could hear faint voices in the distance, with nowhere else to go, she followed until she came upon a scene that caused her to clench her hands in anger.

"You're a freak!"

"Yeah, no one likes you!"

"Your parents are better off dead than being with you!"

Inukimi found a group of two boys and two girls standing over a crying Rin, who had been knocked down. Rin appeared older, maybe no older than 10 now.

"Are you sure she won't tell on us?" A dark-haired girl asked.

"No, she's mute. She hasn't talked since her parents died. Isn't that right Rin?" One of the kids asked bending down and pulling on Rin's hair. Rin only grimaced in pain, pushing the boy away from her.

Inukimi knowing what the young human child had already gone through and to now see her being abused by children her own age, found herself growling and subconsciously gathering her youki around her. To her astonishment, she felt the ground shake and the children suddenly looked around in fear.

"Sakura, I told you I didn't like this forest! It's creepy!" The boy cried out.

Sakura turned and with fear in her eyes, "Toji, shut up! Aoi, Minako, come on, let's go!"

Inukimi watched as the children ran away, mentally remembering the children's name. She then turned back to see Rin looking up in her direction, almost as if the human child was looking at her.

Turning so her body was fully facing the human child, Inukimi bent over and hesitantly reached out a hand towards the child. Inukimi gasped when she made contact with the child's tear-streaked cheek.

"Oh, my sweet child," The youkai demoness said softly cupping Rin's face.

"Come now, up up," Inukimi said, helping the child stand.

Using her demon hearing, Inukimi picked up a nearby stream. Taking Rin's hand, she quietly led the child over to the stream.

"Clean your face child, do not let linger the memories of what the others did to you."

Inukimi watched as Rin looked at her and then squatted down and scooped water into her hands and splashed her face. The human child did this a few times until the redness faded away from her eyes.

The child turned and looked at Inukimi with inquisitive eyes.

Inukimi gracefully lowered herself, so she was eye-level with the small child. This being the first time to truly look upon the small child's face, Inukimi studied Rin's face. After a few moments of nothing but silence Inukimi had a hunch of who this child was.

"Your name is Rin?" Inukimi gently asked.

Rin nodded yes.

"Your parents are no longer among the living are they, sweet child?"

Rin merely looked down and sniffled.

Inukimi wrapped her arms around the small child, whispering loving words into her ears.

The great demoness pulled back from Rin and gently wiped away the fresh tears that were falling down her face.

"Did you know that tears are your heart's way of healing?" Inukimi said, gently pulling Rin to sit against her on the soft earth.

Rin looked up and nodded no.

"Well, it is, do not be ashamed of your tears. It's only natural to miss the ones we loved. Your parents loved you very much and I'm sure they miss you every day."

Inukimi gently stroked the small child's head, everything around her started to fade to darkness.

Inukimi realizing her time was short, quickly turned Rin to face her.

"Rin, you are stronger than you will ever know. Be the jewel that your father said you are."

Rin's eyes widened her mouth opening and then blackness.

Inukimi felt the pulling sensation again, this time it yanked her through the void of darkness, pulling her so hard that Inukimi closed her eyes at the pressure. She felt her entire body being squeezed by an invisible force. Just when she thought her body would pop and she couldn't breathe, she was slammed into a wall and fall onto a hard cold surface.

Inukimi gasped for air, her lungs forcing oxygen in and out of her body. Opening her eyes, Inukimi blinked a few times to clear her vision. Rolling to her side, she pushed her hands under herself and sat back.

She was in another strange setting.

Looking around, she stood up and found herself alone in what appeared to be a large suite. A white bed laid nearby and what appeared to be bags filled with clothes. It reminded her of the place where she had seen Rin laying after her parents died.

"It's time to start pushing Rin! You can do it!"

Inukimi's head abruptly turned to the sound of the voice. Still disoriented from being pulled and falling, Inukimi struggled to the next room. Using the wall as an anchor, she found herself staring at her son and an adult-looking Rin. Rin was submerged in a pool of water and appeared to be in pain.

Sesshomaru was sitting outside the pool of water and rubbing Rin's back, "It's time mate. You can do this."

Inukimi watched as Rin drenched in sweat, looked towards Sesshomaru, and nodded, "Yes, it's time we meet our girls."

With newfound strength, Rin started pushing.

Inukimi felt her eyes burning, reaching a hand up to touch her face, she found herself crying. Then everything started to fade to black.

"NO!" Inukimi screamed out, not wanting to leave the scene. Her scream so loud that Sesshomaru's head snapped up and if Inukimi didn't know any better, she would have sworn that her son's eyes widen in shock at her appearance.

"INUKIMI!"

The youkai demoness sat up, gasping for air, her head wildly looking around.

She suddenly felt her face being griped and met concerned amber eyes looking at her.

Find her bearings, Inukimi sputtered out, "Toga!? What happened?"

"I would ask the same of you, my mate." Toga said pulling his mate towards his chest and rubbing her back.

"What did you see?" Inukimi asked, inhaling her mate's scent, finding herself calming down.

"I had turned away for a moment and the next thing I knew, I heard you scream. I looked back and your eyes were bright white and then you collapsed. I've been calling your name for the past minute or so."

Inukimi pushed away from her mate's chest, "It's only been a moment?!"

"Yes, my mate." Toga said stroking her warm cheek.

Inukimi knew that she had spent at least an hour or so in her vision but only a moment had passed... Inukimi was aware that visions rarely came to her and when they did, time moved differently.

It had been so long since Inukimi had a vision. She had absolutely no idea if something would happen when she touched the young human woman.

Inukimi's family had kept her visions a secret. No one knew of her ability to see into the future. Her family had worried that if word reached across the lands that a Inu princess had abilities to see the future, a war would break out between the clans. There was also the fear that someone would try to kidnap her or ask for her hand in marriage and she would be abused.

Inukimi's visions were not consistent though. Her visions were also not full visions. All she would catch is small glimpses into the future. It was never enough to know what exactly was going on. Sometimes her visions came once a month. Sometimes they came every few years. There was a period where she no visions for 10 years.

Then one day, she was walking with one of her servants when she was suddenly pulled into the void of blackness. Finding herself floating in nothingness, Inukimi suddenly heard screaming. It was the kind of screaming that cut through your soul. Screams that haunt you at night during the darkest hours. Then Inukimi eyes was filled with intense orange light.

Inukimi then realized she was seeing fire. She watched as the lands that belonged to her people were burned down by humans. She saw hundreds of her kind laid dead across the field along with other youkai. She saw nothing but hordes of humans consuming the lands.

Inukimi sobbed out as she realized she had witnessed the death of her clan and all youkai across Japan. She realized they were all going to die.

She then woke in her chambers with Toga pacing the room.

"Toga?" Inukimi choked out, her voice hoarse.

Toga spun around at the sound of his name, seeing his mate conscious, he raced forward and grasped her hand. Turning to one of the servants, he barked out that someone bring water for the lady of the west immediately.

"You had me worried, my mate." Toga said pressing her hand to his cheek.

A cup was soon presented to Inukimi and with Toga's help, she greedily swallowed it down.

"How long have I been asleep?" Inukimi asked once her voice had return.

"Almost a full day."

Inukimi grimaced.

"What did you see?" Toga asked.

When Inukimi had met Toga on their wedding day, she knew the moment she met him that she could trust him with her secret. All she had told Toga was that sometimes she would see small fragments of the future but never enough to understand what exactly was happening in her visions. Toga also never asked. He gave her privacy and let her come to him with her visions if and when she wanted to.

Inukimi struggled to sit up, Toga reached out and guided her up, and then propped a pillow behind her once she was comfortable.

"Send everyone away, what I need to say can only be heard by you." Inukimi sighed out.

Once Toga has cleared all the servants out, he sat across from his mate on the bed.

"Speak, what troubles your heart."

Inukimi knew she wasn't supposed to share her visions. She was supposed to keep her visions to herself. She was told that she was never to repeat what she would see. Her visions never cause enough to change destiny.

But this vision…

She simply couldn't sit by and let her clan die. She couldn't imagine a world without youkai.

She couldn't imagine a world without her son Sesshomaru.

She would do anything for her son…

She would see her son grow and rule the western lands once Toga stepped down.

It was her son's birthright.

She would do what was necessary to see to her son's future.

She knew she had the power to change this vision….

Suddenly a memory she had long forgotten flooded her mind:

"Inukimi, come here child."

Inukimi stood facing her grandmother, she was no more than 13 years of age. They were standing in the family gardens with her parents a few feet away. She made her way to grandmother and stood before her.

Her grandmother studied her and finally spoke," Your visions child….."

Inukimi watched as her grandmother simply paused, turning, and staring into nothing.

Inukimi looked to where her grandmother was staring and saw nothing. The young princess looked back to her grandmother and noticed the old woman looked surprised and then suddenly the look was gone from her face. Her grandmother looked back down at her, a look passing on her face. A look Inukimi couldn't place.

"Grandmother?" The young Inu princess asked.

"My child, your visions. You must never speak of them to anyone. You cannot change what is to come. You would do well to keep your visions to yourself, do you understand?"

Inukimi did not fully understand what her grandmother meant but simply nodded yes.

"Good, no matter what, you cannot change what is to come."

'I'm sorry grandmother but this one time….I will do what I have to do to keep my family alive.' Inukimi thought to herself.

Inukimi looked up at her mate, seeing his concerned eyes upon her. She squared her shoulders and did the one thing, the only thing she swore she would never do, and revealed what the future held for their kind.

"Toga, one day our clan will die. All of the youkai will die. We have to stop this from happening."

Author's Notes:

Hmmm...putting the pieces together of how Toga knew the age of the youkai was coming to an end...Inukimi basically altered the future by telling Toga what she saw when she shouldn't have...
