She never questioned his right to be here, in her house. Just stood in the doorway and let him brush past her into the long hallway beyond. She knew where he was headed without asking. He was running on autopilot much like he had that first night nearly two months ago to the day. He came every week, always after midnight and left before she woke in the morning. She suspects it's his way of telling himself that he's not in love with her. Just as she tells herself that she doesn't love him. Maybe she's right, maybe not. But for now she won't fret over it because tonight it's about them. Tonight is about finding an escape from the world in each other. And in the morning they'll see each other at work and speak like none of this happened. And she'll rebuild herself and tell herself that next time she'll be stronger and next time he'll stay. And she realises now that she has come to depend on these times together as much as he has, the two of them behind the closed door of her home, of her bedroom, and she couldn't bear for them to end.
