He and Hermione were perfect together. They couldn't have been more perfect than that. It was his silver lining for the school year. Hermione excused herself to the loo after the briefing on the train and told Ron she'd catch up with him. Draco managed to get rid of Pansy and met Hermione in the loo
"I missed you" He said after they'd kissed
"I missed you too…" She whispered… "I have to go, otherwise they might come looking…"
"Okay… but, I have good news, I bribed the head boy to give us rounds with each other… So I'll see you tomorrow night.." Draco whispered back
They kissed again and Hermione fixed herself before heading towards her friends.
Malfoy stopped by with Crabbe and Goyel to antagonise Harry and steal glances at Hermione. However the rest of the train ride was quite and peaceful as they were introduced to Luna Lovegood
Harry saw the thestrals and Hermione who had read about them in one of the tomes reassured Harry that he was not going nuts.

The sorting Hat's song held a warning and both Draco and Hermione shared a look. They knew what it meant but both of them knew that this was much bigger than just Hogwarts. Umbridge's speech had Hermione glancing at Draco multiple times. He nodded discreetly. It seemed like just the two of them and a handful of other students even cared about what was happening. Once they had gotten the first years together Hermione actually implemented some of what Draco had told her happens with the Slytherin first years without any help from Ron (that was unsurprising)
The next morning Hermione, Ron and Harry were upset that some of their housemates thought harry was lying about the Dark Lord rising. Hermione was trying to talk sense into the boys but they were too busy being… well, themselves
"The point" Hermione explained irritated "is that this sort of thing is exactly what Dumbledore was talking about. You-know-who's only been back for a couple of months and we've already started fighting among ourselves. And the Sorting hat's warning was the same; Stand together, be united…"
"And Harry go it right last night!" Retorted Ron " if that means we're supposed to get matey with the Slytherins - fat chance!" He finished
"Well, I think it's a pity we're not trying for a bit of inter house unity," said Hermione crossly
The rest of the day the classes went on as usual. Almost all the teachers spoke about the OWLs and their opportunities as well as the expected grade to continue taking their subject for the NEWTs. Before lunch they had double potions and Draco and Hermione sat in places where they could see each other without being suspected. Harry was focuses first to leave the class. Ron followed while Hermione made a show of taking time to fill her flask. Draco also took his time. The two of them were the last one's there. The class was empty and Snape was looking at some papers on his desk but he didn't fail to notice that two of his most unlikely students were making eyes and giving secret smiles to each other. Hermione kept her flask first and left the room. She was at the door when she heard "Ms. Granger, shut the door behind you. I'd like to have a word with Mr. Malfoy" She turned nodded and gave Draco a look before shutting the door. She wanted to go down to lunch but her stomach was churning. She hid in an alcove and waited
It seemed like forever when the Draco opened the door to the classroom and said "Thank you Professor Snape" Cheekily as he walked out. He had barely taken two steps when she pulled him into the alcove she had been waiting in. He was surprised and then smiled when he saw her. He told her to stay quiet by putting a finger on the lips and pulled her further down the corridor of the dungeons. He opened and old unused room and pulled her in then locked the door behind her and muttered a charm at the door
"Worried about me Granger" He asked
"Obviously!" She snapped "What did he want?"
"Well for one he thinks we work well together in potions and that it might be a great idea to make us partners again…" Draco smiled
"What? You're joking…"
"No, I am not… He said and I quote - the antidote that you and Ms. Granger made was worthy of an O. If you'd both would like to take my subject for the NEWTs, then talk to her and partner up again…"
"You're joking… an O!"
"Really 'mione, that's all you took away from that?"
"Oh hush!" She said leaning over and kissing him. He held on to her and deepen the kiss.
"By the way, do you still have the password to the Head's bathroom?" He asked
"Don't need it, we're prefects remember… our bathrooms are just as nice…" She winked "Okay I have to go…"
He pulled her back and gave her a quick peck before letting her go…
As he saw those soft curls head up the stairs he thought "This woman is going to be the death of me…"
After lunch Hermione met the boys again in Umbrige's class. It was the worst class of the day and harry got detention.
That night Hermione ranted her heart out about Umbridge to Malfoy and while he told her he sympathised that he would have to keep up appearances. She understood but hated that there was this chasm they couldn't seem to cross.
The only solace was the patrols they did together. They would often end up on the seventh floor corridor in replicas of their rooms. It was the best way they could share things with each other. One night while they were sitting in Hermione's bedroom Draco said
"You need to take Occlumency lessons… I don't know how you'll do that, but you should. Maybe ask Snape.."
"Snape really? He may love you but in case you haven't noticed Gryffindors are his least favourite students…"
"It's true but, Snape doesn't just love me, he's also my Godfather…"
"What?"
"Yeah… He's pretty cool too, he took me out for ice cream, got me all sorts of books to read… He and dad even taught me how to ride a broom… "
"It's weird… "
"What is?"
"Imagining Snape outdoors" Hermione said with a shudder
Draco chuckled "yes, it's almost as painful as it is to watch Crabbe, Goyle or the Weasel study…"
Hermione swatted him and went back to one of the books the room had provided them with to research Malfoy's lineage…
Malfoy was reading over her shoulder, holding her from behind…
"Draco…"
"Hmmm"
"You could pick up another book and read it you know…"
"No…"
"Why not? It'll be faster" Hermione whined
"I don't care if it's faster, I'm worried if I let go you'll just disappear…"
Hermione turned to him and between kissed she said "I'm. Not. Going. Anywhere." She extracted herself from his arms and picked up another book from the shelf and flung it at him. "Here, read this…"
"Fine…" After a moment of silence he said "Hermione…"
"Hmm"
"I really like your room, but mine is bigger…"
Suddenly the room shifted to from his room and the bed they were sitting on disappeared dropping both of them to the floor. Draco caught himself and Hermione using his seeker reflexes….
"oof… Draco… let me go…" She huffed
"No…" He said defiantly adjusting her in his lap to make himself comfortable
