*Takes place after Alvin's death*
Jordan- 16
16 year old Jordan sighed as she read the paper in her hands, she was once again suspended this time 3 days for a fight and on top of it they needed her father to come in for a conference to discuss her behavior.
She couldn't show her father. Not now at least. They were still mourning the loss of Alvin. He had been murdered while in prison, Jordan watched how badly it tore her father apart. Her father had always been her rock, now she had to be her father's rock.
Her father had been on suspension after shooting and killing the guy who had put out a hit on her godfather. The sixteen-year-old didn't know why. The son of a bitch was pretty much responsible for the death of her godfather. If anything he deserved to die.
Jordan couldn't go home, she couldn't tell her father. Instead she had gone to the district. Lately she'd end up playing referee between Antonio and Adam. She knew Antonio had to tell Internal Affairs about the shooting that her father had done. If she lost her father again because of Antonio, she may not be so forgiving this time.
Walking into the district, Trudy had seen her godmother and the teen had gone to her. "Hey Aunt Trudy"
Looking over the desk Sergeant had seen her goddaughter she rounded the desk hugging her. "Hey sweetheart, I thought you were in school"
"I got suspended. I left before they could call my dad. 3 days this time. They need him to come in for a conference to discuss my behavior"
"You realize you can't hide this from your dad forever right"
"One can try. He doesn't need to deal with this right now he has enough to deal with"
"What was it for this time?"
"Fighting. And between us, I won. Again"
Trudy chuckled and hugged her. "Going upstairs?"
"Mind buzzing me up?"
"Of course"
Jordan had gone to the gate and Trudy buzzed her up, as she was going up the stairs she had heard arguing once again. It was all anyone heard these days. Antonio and Adam were in a heated argument again and Adam was in the senior detective's face.
Lately Jordan was having just about enough of this. She was trying to help her father through this difficult time, she herself had been struggling with her own sobriety and now this. She didn't know how much more she could take before she snapped.
Storming over she pulled Adam back. "Hey! ENOUGH!"
Everyone had looked at the teen, it wasn't often the teen screamed but when she did she was a miniversion of her father. She glared at them.
"Aren't you supposed to be at school?" Antonio asked.
"Aren't you two supposed to be acting like adults instead of children? Every time I come here it's a screaming match between the two of you. It stops and it stops now" Jordan told them sharply.
"Jo-" Adam started but was cut off.
"I said it stops now Adam" She gave him a pointed look. "My dad may not be here to keep you in line right now but dammit I will. Someone needs to keep you two from killing each other. Adam, whatever Antonio said to internal Affairs was said. Leave it for the higher ups to investigate. What's done is done" She then turned to Antonio. "Don't think I haven't forgotten about you. You're supposed to be the senior detective, start acting like it and stop the bickering with Adam. You're the senior detective, act like it. And between us, if I lose my dad again because of you, don't ever bother showing your face again"
After that she went to her father's office and slammed the door. They all had looked at each other.
"Has anyone checked on her or Voight since we buried Al?" Adam asked softly.
"She always said she was fine," Hailey answered.
"I'll go check on her" Jay spoke.
Since Erin was gone, Jay and Jordan grew a bond that was almost unbreakable. He had always swore he'd be the one to look out for her. He went to the office and opened the door.
Jordan had a piece of paper she was forging her father's name, Jay looked with a raised eyebrow and crossed his arms across his chest. "Ya know for a cop's kid you should know forgery is a crime"
The teen looked up to him. "My dad has a lot to deal with Jay, dealing with his delinquent teenage daughter isn't one of them"
"You're not a delinquent"
"Have you seen my track record? Delinquent"
"What are you signing his name to anyway"
She sighed and put her pen down. "I got suspended. Again"
"Fourth time this month"
She gave him a look. "Thanks for keeping count, Count von Count"
"What was it for this time?"
"Same as always. Fighting. Some guys were talking shit about my dad and how the shooting went down. Bastard got what he deserved he killed Uncle Alvin"
She started scratching her arms again feeling the urges come back, she had fought them since the night Alvin had died. The detective had gone over and gently grabbed her hands.
"How are you doing kiddo?"
"Don't you guys ever take I'm fine for an answer?"
"With your track record? Not really"
She gave a small chuckle. "I...I'm being more focused on helping my dad. He's always been there for me. It's time I'm there for him"
"What about your mental health Jo? I know you've been helping you dad but have you been helping yourself? We don't want you going down a rabbit hole again"
"I know. I've been to a couple meetings, I go to Med and see Dr. Charles when I can"
"That's good. As long as you're getting help. Don't ever be afraid to ask for help"
"I won't. You should get back out there"
"I'm here for you sweetheart, never forget that"
She gave him a smile. "Thanks Jay"
He stood up and gave her a brotherly kiss on her head. He left. Jordan signed the paper and slipped it in her bag, seeing the time she left going home.
When Jordan got home Hank was in the kitchen cooking, he peeked out seeing his daughter.
"Hey sweetheart, how was school?" Hank asked.
"It was fine. Nothing new" Jordan answered with a smile.
"Where were you?"
"Stopped by the district. Wanted to see everyone"
"How are they?"
"Antonio and Adam acting like children but otherwise they're ok"
"Why are they acting like children?"
"The consist bickering about what happened. Adam thinks Antonio ratted you out. Antonio is trying to end it. They end up fighting each and every time. I don't know how you put up with it"
The older man sighed sadly he went back and cut the food off. Jordan went and hugged her father. Hank held his daughter. He couldn't believe that slowly he lost everyone he's ever loved and cared for. Camille. His unborn daughter that was Justin's twin. Anna. Justin. Olive and Daniel. Erin. And now his best friend, Alvin. The only thing that kept him from falling apart was his little girl. She was still here. She was healthy, sober, clean, nothing would take her away from him. Nothing.
Jordan had held her father tightly, he was always there for her. She had to be there for him. He endured enough pain and heartache. She pulled away.
"Go rest daddy, I got this"
"I got it sweet girl"
"Dad, go get some rest. I got this"
"Only if you're sure"
"I'm sure"
Hank went to his room to rest, the sixteen year old had finished up dinner. She made herself a plate and brought a plate to her father. She had gone to his room. Hank had been on his bed softly sobbing. The teen had heard, it was very very rare if she had ever heard her father cry.
The only times she remembers him crying, when Justin died and they buried him, when Olive took Daniel and left, when Erin left, and after they caught the guy who put the hit on Alvin. She'd never seen her father so broken before. It was as if the roles were reversed now. Hank was the broken one and she was taking care of him.
Jordan knew how she was gonna handle her 3 day suspension. She'd take care of her father and check in on the team while he couldn't. When she'd leave in the morning she'd go to the district and stay there till school lets out and go home. She could keep it up and hopefully not get caught.
Going in the room she sat on the bed setting the plate down. "Dad, I brought you're dinner"
She was met by soft snoring looking down she had seen he had fallen asleep. She kissed his cheek and moved the plate she covered him up. "Sleep easy pop"
As she took the plate downstairs there was a knock on the door. The teen raised her eye and went to the kitchen, grabbing the bat she had gone to answer it. She held it in a ready to swing motion.
"Who is it?" Jordan called through the door.
"It's Adam, you can put the bat down kid" Adam replied.
Putting the bat down she opened the door. "What's wrong Adam?"
"Nothing I came to check on you"
She opened the door all the way for him to walk in. "You guys should really take, I'm fine for an answer again"
"I don't think we will for a while"
"Almost 2 years has been a long while Ruz"
"Where's your dad?"
"Resting. Adam, I got too much to deal with right now. I can't keep playing referee between you and Antonio"
"Nobody's asking you too"
"When my dad's senior detective and one of his officers keep having yelling and screaming matches and they get into a brawl after a bust. Someone needs to keep you guys in line. If my dad can't do it then I will. You guys forget I was raised by him for 16 years. I know him better than any of you"
Adam had raised his eye. "How'd you know about the fight after the bust?"
"Please Adam, I find out everything. I'm my father's kid"
"Jo, you know your dad did the right thing though. He killed the bastard who put the hit on Al"
"Don't you think I know that? I'm on my dad's side" She turned as she felt herself shaking. "Between losing Uncle Al and the shooting...I'm barely holding myself together. You don't know how badly I want to drink. How badly I wanna pop a pill. Anything to end this pain for a little bit. But I won't do it. My dad is suffering enough"
It was the first time since Alvin's death Jordan admitted how she felt. Adam had looked at her with a saddened look and pulled her in for a hug. Jordan hugged him and sniffed back tears.
"I'm trying so hard Adam, but I don't know how long i can be strong for"
How the hell could they be so blind? He and Antonio were bickering so much and everyone played referee they had forgotten all about Hank and Jordan. Hank was being investigated for murder and if they found out he'd end up back in jail and Jordan will once again be alone. If that happened she just may hit rock bottom again and she may not come back.
Adam had given her a brotherly kiss on the top of her head. "I'm so sorry kiddo. We've been so wrapped up we forgot"
She sniffed and chuckled. "I see why you guys don't take, I'm fine for an answer from me"
He chuckled a bit as well. "I see why too"
"I didn't really wanna tell anyone. You guys were busy. I had to take care of my dad"
"Jo, you know you can always come to us if were busy or not"
"I didn't know how with you guys constantly bickering at each other"
"I'm sorry kiddo"
"Just no more or I'll kick your asses myself"
"I don't doubt it," He chuckled. "So why were you at the district so early today?"
"Suspended. Again"
"Let me guess fighting?"
"Pretty much. I won"
"Jo"
"The asshole was talking shit about my dad how the shooting went down. How he was gonna end up back in jail and all that. I lost my cool and beat him up"
"You know you're not gonna lose you're dad right"
"We don't know that Adam. He could get taken at any time and I'm alone. For good"
He pulled her close. "You honestly think we'll let that happen? Kid you will never be alone. Not with us around"
"Thanks Adam"
"Should we be expecting you for a few days?"
"Yup"
"We will see you tomorrow then"
"And no fighting with Antonio either"
"Yes ma'am mini Sergeant"
She chuckled. "You got that right"
Adam soon left, Jordan had straightened up the kitchen and the house a bit. She had gone to bed for the night.
The next morning Jordan had gotten up, showered and dressed. She had grabbed her backpack, before she left she went to check on her father. Hank was still in bed quietly she went in. Looking at his nightstand she sighed sadly, he had a couple bottles of liquor there. He must have gotten them after she went to bed.
Throwing the blanket over him she kissed his cheek. "See you later dad"
The sixteen-year-old took the bottles with her, staring at them with some liquid in them. She was highly tempted to open them and chug the rest of them. Biting her lip she fought it. Going downstairs she dumped them out, she didn't wanna do what she was about to do. When she was going through her rough patch, her father had hid all the booze in the house.
That's what she was doing, hiding it all from her father. It had felt strange as if the roles had been reversed. Once it was all hidden and locked away she made some coffee and heated up a breakfast sandwich she left locking up the house.
Jordan had set off for the district, it was gonna be her new set up place for the next few days. It was a warm but breezy warming so she had decided to walk, she had her earbuds in but had kept her guard up. When she saw people, she'd see the looks some people gave her. She knew by a young age to ignore it all. All she did was keep walking and ignoring them.
A short time later she had arrived just as Antonio was coming in. He gave his niece a small smile. "Hey sweetie"
"Tonio" She replied with a smile herself.
"Jo-" He was cut off by her.
"No fighting today Antonio. You're the senior detective. Act like it. I don't want anymore fighting"
"As long as you're not fighting"
"Who told you?"
"That's my job as a detective. I find things out"
"Was it Adam or Jay?"
"Jay"
"In my defense the little shit was talking about my dad and uncle Alvin"
"No more fighting"
"No promises"
"Jordan"
"Antonio. Now that we know each other's names"
"Do you have any school work?"
"Nope and Antonio, for what I said yesterday. About me losing my dad again and not showing your face. I'm sorry. I was riled up from the fight, dealin with you and Adam. I wasn't thinking"
"It's ok kiddo. I forgive you"
They went in and headed upstairs, the others were coming in for the day. Jordan had snuck up behind Jay and pounced on his back.
"What the.." Jay says glancing behind him.
"You should know from Adam what happens to people who snitch on me" Jordan replies.
The young detective looked to Antonio. "Really Tony?"
"Sorry kid"
"Alright hop down"
Jordan had hopped off Jay's back. "No more telling people"
"I promise"
"So what's the plan for today"
"We work. You stay out of trouble" Antonio told her.
The teen smiled. "Don't I always"
"Nice try kiddo"
"One could try. No fighting, that means you too Adam" She glanced to Adam.
"We promise," They said in union.
The team had gotten to work with their latest case, Jordan had gone to her father's office closing the door.
In her father's office she had opened her backpack and seen the bottle she put in the night before. It was a bottle of whiskey. She was still highly tempted to take one drink. One shouldn't hurt, right? No. She was two years clean and sober, she couldn't risk her sobriety.
Would it be worth losing two years for one drink? She wanted it to go away. The pain. She was tired and stressed. She needed something to let loose. To end it. She was lost in her thoughts when Adam came in. Adam had seen her holding the bottle he froze.
"Jo" He spoke.
Looking over the sixteen-year-old saw him. "Adam, it's not what you think. I swear"
He went in and went to her. "What is it?"
"Since Uncle Al died, I've been fighting my urges. I put this in my bag last night. I haven't opened it. I just imagine what Justin, my mom, Lexie, and Uncle Al would say. Here" She passed him the bottle.
He took it away from her, she turned away from him feeling her eyes burning with tears. Adam put his hand on her chin and moved her face towards him. Since Alvin's death, Jordan hadn't grieved. She wouldn't let herself, she was afraid if she did she'd end up back down the rabbit hole.
"Talk to me kiddo" Adam's voice was gentle.
"I never grieved Uncle Alvin. I can't"
"Oh sweetheart, why" He put some hair behind her ear.
"You guys saw how I was after Justin. I was a wreck. With Lexie, I just about relapsed. I can't"
"Jo, sweetie, you can allow yourself to grieve. Holding it inside it isn't good"
She sniffed. "I know but, my dad needs me to be strong for him. I can't be weak"
"Hey you're never weak. You could never be weak, no matter what you do"
"You think so?"
"I know so"
"Please don't tell"
"I won't"
"Thank you"
"I'm just glad you didn't do anything"
"I am too. Thanks for helping me Adam"
"Anytime kiddo"
She held him tightly in a hug. "It's so hard"
"Trust me I know"
"I want it to stop"
"We'll find a better outlet for you"
"Like what?"
"We'll figure it out"
"Thanks Ruz"
"You're welcome squirt"
She then slid something down his shirt and ran to the door as he started shaking, the teen laughed. "Still way too easy"
"You little" He chased after her.
Jordan ran out and bumped into Jay, he caught her before she fell. Adam had come out after getting the rubber lizard from his shirt. A short blonde woman, Kate Brennan watched on with an unamused look.
"And what is this?" Brennan spoke.
"This is Sergeant Voight's daughter. We're keeping an eye on her for him" Antonio says.
Jordan had rolled her eyes. "Antonio if you wanna lie at least put some effort into it. I'm here because I wanna be here. I've been coming here since I was 11 almost 12. I'll be here if I wanna be here. What's it to blondie here"
"I'm Superintendent Brennan" Kate spoke with a raised eyebrow.
That caused the teen to chuckle dryly. "You're the one who suspended my dad"
"He's under investigation for murder"
"That bastard deserved what he got! He put the hit out on my uncle and now he's dead! I'm putting my dad back together right now not you"
"I suggest you watch who you're talking to"
"Or what? You gonna put me in lock up? Been there, done that. I bet there's nothing you can throw at me that I haven't been through"
"Say Jo why don't we go for a walk" Hailey said, reaching a hand out to the girl's shoulder.
"Hailey, don't touch me right now. I don't wanna hurt you" The teen didn't even look at her.
The blonde detective pulled her hand back. Jordan felt her blood boiling, she was ready for a fight her fist balled by her side ready to take a swing. A fiery look in her eyes, a look she only got while protecting her loved ones, especially her father. She lost him once, she almost lost him after losing Justin, and again now.
"You ain't the first person who tried to take my dad from me, probably won't be the last. But if I do lose him because of this. You will have made an enemy out of me and you don't want me for an enemy. You don't know me, but I know you and people like you. One thing you should know about me, I'm my father's child. I can easily match his temper. The bastard my dad killed, he put the hit on a Chicago police officer, he was reaching for a gun when he was with my father. All you higher ups need to grow some goddamn balls and understand the fact that the bastard got what he deserved"
"Jo come on kiddo" Adam tried this time.
"Back off Adam"
"Like I suggest, kid, I suggest you watch who you're talking to," Brennan told Jordan.
"Or what? You're not my father and you're sure as hell not my mother. I ain't afraid of people like you. Never have been, never will be"
"Jordan Lynn!" Came a strong gruff voice.
Everyone looked to see Hank, no matter how pissed Jordan was she knew to back off when her father had the look in his eye. She went to his office knowing she was about to be in for it. Hank followed his daughter and closed the door.
"I thought you were home resting" Jordan says, glancing at him.
"Funny, I thought you were supposed to be at school. Oh wait you're on suspension for 3 days" Hank replied a bit angrily.
The teen looked to her father. "How did.."
"I just came from a conference at your school to discuss your recent behavior. You thought you could hide this from me?"
"I tried and failed. How did you find out?"
"I'm your father, I find out everything"
"I should have so checked you're voicemails"
"Jordan"
"In my defense that little shit deserved what he got. He was talking about you and how you'd go back to jail after killing the bastard who put the hit on Uncle Al. He was saying Uncle Al got what was coming to him" She looked down.
The older man sighed sadly and pulled her into a hug. "Al didn't deserve it, he shouldn't have been in there. He was in there because of me. I told him not to let him take the fall for me"
"Dad this isn't on you"
"It feels like it is"
"You didn't do this"
"It's gonna take me some time to believe that"
"It's gonna take time Pop"
"I still can't believe you thought you'd try and hide a suspension from me"
"How'd you find out? I never gave you the note"
"They called me this morning"
"Dammit"
"Jo the fighting has to stop"
"It has. To a point"
"If you want Antonio and Adam to stop fighting then that applies to you too"
"They're grown adults fighting during cases and stuff. I'm different"
"You're not different. It stops now Jo or you're grounded for a month"
"Dad!"
"Don't dad me"
"Fine, no more fighting"
"By the way you're grounded"
"For what?"
"Well one for getting suspended again, two for the fighting, and three, trying to forge my name on that slip"
"How the.."
"I know and find out everything"
"Are you ever gonna tell me you're secret to that?"
"Nope. Word of advice, never leave your backpack around to where I can see it"
"You went through my backpack?"
"You left it out. And forging my name could get you into a heap load of trouble. What were you thinking?"
"You had a lot to deal with and didn't need this added on"
"I'm never to busy to deal with you"
"I just didn't wanna add more to you're plate"
"Honey you can always come to me about anything"
"I'm sorry"
"You're going to be. Grounded, a week"
"Fair enough. Dad, you're gonna be ok aren't you?"
He put some hair behind her ear. "For you, I'll always be ok. I promise you'll never ever lose me"
The sixteen-year-old buried herself in his chest. "I love you daddy"
He wrapped his arms around her protectively. "I love you too sweet girl".
As the teen was wrapped in her father's arms she knew she was safe and protected. Hank knew his daughter still needed him and will always need him. He remembered very well about the rabbit hole she went down, he wouldn't do that to her. One thing for sure, the father and daughter would always have each other.
