Jordan- 13

Intelligence had gotten another case, only this one hit hard for Hank. They had been investigating a doctor who was purposely misdiagnosing patients with cancer and dosing them with chemo they hadn't needed. Jordan was never one to get involved with her father's cases, she stayed out of the way. When she saw how badly her father was hurting, she never saw him this way.

Jordan had always known her father was married before he met her mother, she heard of Camille. Her father and brother told her stories. But never once did they talk about her death. It still hurts too much. It was as if someone added salt in an open wound. The pain would never fully go away.

Hank had been having a private moment in his office trying to clear his head, Jordan came up in the squad. They made sure to turn the white boards so she wouldn't see anything. Seeing her father's door open she walked in, Jordan had been the only one ever allowed to walk straight into his office. Putting her backpack on the chair she went to hug her father. Hank had been so lost and deep in thought what broke him from it was arms wrapping around him.

Looking down he saw his little girl hugging him tight, for the first time that day a small smile formed on his lips. At that moment his little girl was one of the main reasons he refused to go over that edge and kill that doctor. It had taken all his physical strength not to do it.

"Daddy, are you ok?"Jordan asked softly, her fingers twirling with his shirt. A habit she had done when she was nervous.

One thing the older man knew, he could tell when his children were nervous, scared or upset. Jordan was definitely nervous and scared. And for good reason. Taking a breath he gently unwrapped her from him and bent down. He saw the nervousness in her eyes. Between this case and seeing that in his daughter, he didn't know how much he could take. Putting on a fake smile he brushed some hair behind her ear.

"I'm just fine sweetheart" He lied. He was lying not only to her but himself. He was far from fine.

"I know how this case has been getting to you because of.. Ya know. Camille. I don't want you doing anything crazy. I don't wanna lose you again. Promise me you won't do anything crazy or reckless. Like before"

Hank wouldn't think twice about ending the worthless bastard who killed his wife, since the start of it hearing his name. He wanted nothing more than to do it. To get justice for his wife and now the current victims. But one thing Hank swore, he would never do anything to get him sent to prison and taken away from his little girl ever again. The first time around was hard and painful enough. Neither of them would handle it for a second time.

"I promise sweetheart. I won't do anything crazy or reckless. He's going to jail for what he's done"

"He should. I've been really worried about you since the start. That you may do something crazy or reckless"

She threw her arms around his neck holding him tightly, tears burned heavily in her chocolate brown eyes. Hank wrapped his daughter in a protective hold, burying his face in her brown hair. A scent hit his nose. Strawberries and vanilla. Just holding her, it gave him some peace. He felt tears prick in his own eyes, he blinked them away as fast as he could.

He was broken out of his thoughts by his phone, holding his daughter with one arm he used his free hand to answer his phone. "Voight...What?!"

When Jordan had heard that tone she knew it wasn't gonna be pretty. After the call it hadn't taken her long to figure out her father was leaving. She looked at him with the same worried look.

"You have to go"

"Yeah. I'll be back in a bit"

"I wanna go with you"

Jordan knew whenever her father was with her, he would always more so stay calm and not on a dangerous or deadly war path. This one was a very dangerous path. Hank knew he'd rather have his daughter stay behind, he didn't want her seeing him lose his cool if things went south.

"I'd rather you stay here sweetie"

"But dad"

"Jordan" He gave a slight warning tone, he hadn't meant to do it. This whole case had him on edge.

He felt as if he was about to snap. He didn't want to snap on his daughter, he would never forgive himself for that. At that tone the young teen knew not to argue or press the issue further. This case had already been getting to him, she didn't wanna be the reason he snapped.

"Fine," She grumbled, looking down.

He bent down to her level again. "Hey, I just don't want you caught up in anything. I don't wanna involve you. Just stay here with Mouse and the others for the time being. I shouldn't be gone long"

"Be careful, be safe"

"Always"

He kissed her head and she kissed his cheek in return, she watched him leave the squad. Taking her backpack she went behind his desk and started her homework. Alvin had walked by going to the lounge, instead of seeing his friend he had seen his young goddaughter. If he had to guess, this was affecting her. He went in and sat across from her.

"Hey sweetheart" He says softly, with his signature smile.

The teen looked to see her godfather. "Hey Uncle Alvin"

"Whatcha working on?"

"Just a book report. Dad had to go somewhere" Something clicked in her head. "Uncle Alvin, can I ask you something"

"Anything honey"

"I don't ever remember dad or Justin talking about Camille's death. I've heard some stories but none about her dying. Why do you think dad and Justin never talk about it? Is it like with my mom? Is it just too hard to talk about?"

"From what I remember, your dad had a hard time opening up about anything. But more so when it came to Camille's death and your mother's. He just could never fully bring himself to it, not without opening the old wound and bringing up all the memories, the depression. He couldn't bear it. Talking about someone, anyone's death especially a loved one. It's very hard, it's difficult and very emotional. A lot of old memories get brought up along with all the pain. It took your dad a while to recover from Camille. Between you and I, it took him a little while to ask your mother out"

"Really? I don't think he's ever mentioned it"

"That's a story for him to tell you. But once he finally healed he had been able to move on with your mom. After her, he could never find himself to move on. He cared more about you, your brother, and his career. But I do know, you and Justin are everything to him. He wouldn't trade you two for anything"

A small smile appeared on her face. "How do I help him through this?"

"You already are"

"I am?"

"You're being there for him. That's the best help he has from you right now"

"Thanks Uncle Alvin"

"Anytime sweetheart"

He stood up and ruffled her hair and she laughed and fixed it. It had been getting late, Jordan fell asleep on her father's couch he had in his office. When the others had gone in to check on her they saw she was asleep, they closed the door so they wouldn't disturb her.

Hank finally came back after meeting with the attorney dealing with the case and clearing his head. He never felt this emotionally drained in a long time. The older man felt he could go home and sleep for days, without a word he went straight to his office. As soon as he entered he slightly panicked not seeing his daughter then calmed down when he saw her asleep on the couch.

He sat in his chair just watching his little girl sleeping peacefully. A smile crept across his face as he leaned back kicking his feet up, he remembers how he'd watch Anna rock their daughter in her nursery all them years ago. After Anna died, he spent nights in his little girl's nursery just watching her sleep. It was one of the many things that gave him peace during a rough time.

This hell he had been going through with this case, just being with his little girl had given him some light at the end of the tunnel. If she hadn't been there, who knows if he'd survive going over that ledge. He went to get his little girl, he bent down and looked at her. She looked like a sleeping angel.

He shook her awake, blindly the young teen woke up and saw her father. "Daddy, what's wrong?"

"Nothing baby. Let's go home, you need some real sleep in your own bed"

She got up and stretched out and rubbed her eyes. Hank had grabbed her backpack soon after and the father and daughter left. Not in the mood to cook Hank stopped and got his daughter some food so she could have some dinner. Jordan ate what she could before she got drowsy again.

Once at home, Jordan went to change for bed. Hank took a big inhale and let it out. He needed a drink or two. Maybe ten. Something to stop this unbearable pain. His stomach was in knots the whole time. Shaking his head briefly he went to check on his daughter.

Jordan was changed for bed and sat there picking her nail, Hank went in the room sitting on the bed. He could tell something had been bugging her, more than this case.

"What's wrong sweetheart?"

She glanced up and then back down. "Is it..is it hard for you to talk about mom and Camille's deaths?"

He sighed and opened his arms without hesitation, Jordan went into her father's embrace. Her small hands took a hold of his large ones.

"It's very hard for me to talk about their deaths, yes. It's hard because I loved them and cared about them very much. I'd have done anything for them. I wish I could have taken Camille's cancer and be there for your mom when she was killed in action. I think that's why it's hard for anyone to talk about death. They wished they could do something, anything to prevent it. Some things honey, you can't always prevent. As much as I would I can't do it all. We can't predict what will happen. All we do is wait and see what life throws at us next. It's all any of us can do"

"Do you think if Camille knew about me, do you think she would have liked me?"

Jordan didn't know a lot about her father's late wife, she didn't know how she'd have felt about Hank moving on and having another child with a different woman.

"I'm pretty sure she would have loved you"

"I know something about Camille"

"Oh yeah, what's that?"

"She'd want you to move on and be happy. Mom would want the same for you. They'd want you to be happy and to move on. They both know you loved and cared about them very much. You have reminders of them every day. You have Justin from Camille. You have me from mom. They'll always be with you no matter what, they're watching over you. They're watching over me, Justin, Olive, Daniel, all of us. Making sure we're healthy, safe and protected. They'll be with you right here" She pointed to his heart. "I like to think it's where mom is for me. I know she's always looking out for me and watching over me"

Freely Hank felt tears falling, his little girl had a way with words. Just like Anna did. Somehow she always knew what to say. Hank held his daughter close, letting the tears fall and kissing her head. Jordan held her father, trying to block her own tears.

Eventually Jordan had fallen asleep in her father's hold, carefully he laid his daughter down and tucked her in. He kissed her head, he stayed there watching her as she slept like he did when she was a baby. After a few more minutes he left her room and went downstairs.

He went and grabbed a box and then a second one. The first box he had opened was pictures of him and his late wife Camille. When they had gotten married, when Justin was a baby. He had gone through all the pictures. Tossing the small stack in the box he picked up a video tape and held it briefly. Putting all the stuff back he closed the box taking a deep breath as the old wounds that were once closed were reopening.

This entire thing had been adding salt into those wounds and Hank didn't know how much more he could take before he cracked and lost it. What the older man hadn't known was that his daughter hadn't been sleeping. She woke up and went to check on him, the teen stayed at the steps watching him before disappearing back to her room for the night.

The case had continued for a couple more days, one night Erin and Hank stayed late going over any kind of information they could get. Jordan begged her father to let her stay with him. Hank didn't argue. He wasn't in the mood, he didn't want to go to someone else for the night and they wouldn't be able to get sleep. And just having her around lightened his mood.

Hank brought Erin a cup of coffee and sat it on the desk, she looked. "Thanks"

"No problem" He softly kissed her head.

"Jordy asleep?"

"Either that or playing on that laptop of hers"

Erin chuckled a bit. "Hank, I miss Camille"

"I know the feeling"

Jordan came out listening to them talk, without turning Hank had known his daughter was there.

"Jordan, what have I told you about eavesdropping?" Hank asked.

"Sorry. I got bored after my movie finished" Jordan replies, rubbing her eyes.

"Honey go lay down if you're tired"

"I can't sleep"

She had gone and sat in his lap like she had always done, leaning into him her head rested against his shoulder. Her arms loosely around his neck. Without hesitation he wrapped his arms around her and started gently rocking her. Erin smiled.

"You're an amazing father Hank" She whispered.

"I try"

Once Jordan had been completely out like a light, he took her to his office laying her down, covering her with a light blanket and tucked his jacket under her head as a pillow. The attorney, Dana, had gone back to Erin and Hank informing them they might have a homicide case.

After getting everything they needed they had gone to court. Secretly Jordan had ridden with one of the others and not her father, she wanted to be there for him every step of the way. She had wanted to be there for him the way he was for her. When Hank had finally noticed her he took her hand and pulled her to the side.

"Jordan, what are you doing here? You're not supposed to be here, you're supposed to be at school" Hank said, his voice was firm and sharp.

"School can wait, you can't. My dad comes before anything. I'm going to be there for you just like you're always there for me and Justin. You need someone to help you through this and that someone is me" Her voice was strong and bold.

Normally nobody ever challenged Hank, they were all too scared. Jordan challenged him to a point. When Hank saw the look in her eye, he was looking at Anna. He heard Anna from her voice. So strong and bold. He didn't have time to argue about this; he pinched the bridge of his nose.

"We're going to talk about this later, you're to stay by me and Erin. Understand?"

"Yes sir"

Everyone went in and sat down, Jordan stayed between Erin and her father. Her small hand slid and grabbed his, giving it a gentle squeeze, not being able to resist Hank gently squeezed back. This was going to be a long day.

Hank couldn't stop himself from staring at Reybold, it had been taking all of his strength not to jump over and beat him. Jordan leaned in and hugged her father's side. Feeling his daughter he looked down and held her.

"You're doing good dad. Don't pay attention to him. He'll get what's coming to him" Jordan whispered.

He didn't respond, just ran his hand down her hair, smoothing it out. The court session was called for a short recess, Dana was screwed. Her case was going south quickly. Adam had taken Jordan for a quick snack. After what seems like forever Dana had finally agreed to put Hank on the stand.

When the court went back into session, Jordan went back to sit between her father and Erin. Hank was called to the stand confusing Jordan, before he went he gave her a look and she backed down. Erin wrapped an arm around her.

"He'll be alright Jordy," Erin told her sister.

"I hope you're right" Was all the teen could say.

On the stand Hank was giving his testimony. "All three victims were in contact with each other, comparing notes. We know this from their phone records. After their December 10th meeting with Dr. Reybold, they agreed to an experimental treatment which in actuality which was twice the usual dosage of chemo. The following week he upped it to three times the amount by the time they wound up in the hospital it was seven times"

"Because of what he did they confronted him about what he did and he was afraid of being exposed" Dana spoke.

"Objection!" The defense lawyer called. "Counsel is testifying"

Jordan made sure to keep her eyes locked on her father, hoping he'd keep his cool. She often found herself glancing at the older doctor on the left side. She felt a squeeze as she felt Erin squeezing her shoulder.

"Could the amounts the patients received have been lab mistakes?" Dana asked.

"No, Dr. Reybold's signature was on every order"

"What about a dosing error?"

"His staffer testified that Dr. Reybold personally administered those doses"

"But the staffer cut a deal"

"It doesn't mean it wasn't the truth"

"Objection. Improper opinion" The defense counsel says.

Just as Dana was going to speak again the defense counsel called another objection, Dana and the judge were going at it for a moment. Hank cut them all off.

"Someone else did. Me. I saw Dr. Reybold diagnosed a patient. My wife, Camille. I saw diagnosis my wife Camille who died under his care"

Jordan had felt her throat tighten, her father was getting that look in his eye and she knew he was back to restraining himself from jumping over the stand and losing it. Dana had no more questions.

The defense counsel went to question Hank, Jordan made sure to keep eyes on her father. She had felt her own temper rise when her father was questioned by this woman. Now she understood why her father couldn't stand defense attorneys. After the defense was finished, Dana went back to ask about the other victims.

After what seemed like a long day and trail, they recessed. Hank walked straight out; he needed some air. Jordan ran after her father, Hank was in a private room. He had taken slow deep breaths trying to calm his nerves. Before he knew it he was hit with a force, he knew who it was.

"I'm so proud of you daddy," Jordan says, hugging him.

He hugged her close and kissed her head. "Thank you sweetheart. I'm letting you off the hook just this one time"

"She'd be very proud of you. Camille. She and mom would be very proud of you"

He choked up slightly. "Your mother would be very proud of you honey"

Hank leaned against the table and held his daughter close with one arm, Erin had walked in the room.

"They got a verdict," Erin says, her voice shook slightly.

"After an hour that was quick"

"Camille would be proud of you"

"You too kiddo"

They went back to the courtroom, Reybold had been found guilty on his charges. Everyone breathed in relief. The older doctor looked back at Hank.

"Hank you've gotta believe me. I didn't mean to harm Camille. The cancer did come back" He told Hank.

Erin grabbed his hand and squeezed. He took it back squeezing. Jordan leaned into his side, hugging him. The older man just hugged his baby girl close to him, ignoring the tears prickling in his eyes.

After that Hank and Jordan went home, the older man went to the living room and turned the tv on watching the home movies he had made with Camille. Jordan came down changed and saw what had been on the tv slowly she had made her way over to him.

"You want some company?" She asked.

"I could always use my favorite girl's company," He replied, patting the couch.

Plopping down on the couch and leaning into his side she watched the movie, Hank just wrapped an arm around her.

"She was really pretty dad"

"She was, wasn't she?"

"You wore glasses?"

He chuckled slightly. "Only when I needed to, I did"

When she saw the small baby boy they were with, her eyes went wide a bit. "Is that Justin?"

"That was your brother"

"He's so different compared to now"

"He grew up"

Her lip wobbled as she looked down hearing a sniff the older father looked down. "What's wrong honey?"

"I miss my mom"

"I do too, baby. I miss them every day"

The father and daughter continued watching the movies as they both had silent tears running down their faces.
