Unmei Force Shattered Heroes: Dark Day Tactics
Chapter 10: The End Of The NRA
"Good news, everyone!" Doctor Morris entered the war room, where the allied officers were gathered to discuss future plans. "The cure formula is truly effective! It doesn't even slow the virus down, it completely eradicates the traces of it in the body! Not to mention, that creating a vaccine is possible by adding only a few more common materials into the mix. We have the vaccine in the making."
"That's great news, Doctor!" Will exclaimed with joy.
"When will we be able to mass-produce the vaccine?" Weiss asked back.
"Unfortunately, we are running low on materials to create more of it. The nearby medical facilities have all been looted, most likely by raiders." Dr Morris answered back, shaking his head.
"Greyfield…" Lin seethed, as everyone in the room turned to her.
"Hmmm? What do you mean?" Morris asked.
"Admiral Greyfield's number-one priority is his own safety and well-being. I'm sure he is behind the looting of those facilities you mentioned. And I have no doubt he possesses huge quantities of the vaccine." Lin answered back. "...Damn bastard must been using the bribe of a vaccine to make people fold to him…"
"First Captain Brenner, and now this…!? I'LL KILL HIM!" Will exclaimed with roaring anger, slamming his fists on the table, jostling it.
"Remember how I said emotion had a time, a place, Will? This isn't it." Lin shook her head.
"I agree with Lin, you shouldn't let your emotions get the better of you." Reisen responded back. "We'll get back those materials to create the vaccine, and if they really made their own, we can take back what was rightfully everyone's, and deal with Greyfield. Two birds, one stone."
"Sorry! Sorry. You're right. Let's just track down Greyfield and finish this once and for all." Will answered back, before he left the war room. "I'm going to take a walk to clear my head for a moment."
The group watched Will leave, before they continued their conversation.
"What is the situation with the infected?" Lin asked back.
"We managed to cure the majority of them, with clean bills of health." Reisen answered back. "That still doesn't mean that they are out of quarantine yet. The risk of being a carrier of the disease is too high to risk. There are also casualties to be expected, due to the lethality of the virus. However, the cure can work even at the critical stages of the disease, as long it does not move into terminal infection. Lieutenant, we'll have your cure in the next batch."
"...I'll take the cure when Greyfield is brought down for everything." Lin answered back. "Do not worry about me, I will do my best not to pass my infection to you all. This nagging pain is a reminder of what Greyfield has done to us."
"Constant pain… That's not good…" Reisen muttered to herself
Suddenly, one of the scouts reported through the allied channels, as Reisen picked up the signal.
"Major Inaba, the Lazurian scouts has relayed information to us that there is another NRA battalion closing on us!" The scout reported. "We need all units on alert!"
"Affirmative on that." Reisen responded back, before she turned back to the officers. "We're going to need to prepare for the battle to come."
Lin then went outside to get Will, as Weiss and Reisen began to piece together the initial situation from the scout reports, as there were a majority of aerial units, which evidently hinted who led the forces.
"...There's little doubt about it… It might be Waylon." Reisen stated.
"The bastard… he has the gall to fight us after what he had done to the good Captain…" Weiss stated. "...We're not going to let him walk out of this fight without a bullet to his head, or his corpse in flaming wreckage."
Eventually, Will entered the room with Lin, as Will scrambled to get the situation from Reisen and Weiss.
"We got enemy forces attacking our rear." Reisen stated. "There is an abundance of enemy air units, which can easily tell you who is the one leading the attack on us."
"...It's Waylon, isn't it?" Will answered back with a low voice and a serious expression.
"Very likely." Weiss stated.
"We're not going to let him beat us." Will stated, before he then patched into the allied comms. "Let's go! All units, move out! And show no mercy!"
"General Forsythe, you will have our flank covered, right?" Reisen asked General Forsythe through the allied comms.
"Do not worry about me, Major, I did not earn my title as a war legend for nothing." Forsythe responded back. "We already have our anti-airs and missiles at the ready. Keep the enemy busy, and we'll have that air fleet down in no time."
"Thank you for your assistance." Reisen responded back. "I've also noticed that there are unused factories and airports nearby. Would you mind if we were to-"
"Do what is needed, you'll need some anti-airs of your own and your own air-force." Forsythe stated.
"Got it. All infantry squads traverse west and capture the factories and airports. We will produce fighters to combat the air fleet, and missiles to help clear the enemy air-force as well." Reisen ordered her men.
The allied infantry then moved to the west, traversing through the mountains, as the AA units under Weiss's and Reisen's command moved back to move in safe range to intercept the enemies.
"Look sharp, we're going to have a target-rich environment very soon!" One of the AA operators warned the other members in his squad.
"Same goes for the other side…." Another operator winced. "...We better not miss our targets, because even a small number of them is enough to cause a lot of trouble."
"HERE THEY COME!" One of the operators exclaimed, as the NRA air-force moved into view, as the units began to fire back with all of their weaponry.
The NRA vanguard was hit by the concentrated fire of the AA vehicles, although some of them slipped through the line, as several battle-copters lined up shots on the missiles and AA vehicles, taking out a fair number of them. However, the units refused to retreat, as they kept on firing on the enemy fleet, until the Lazurian units arrived as reinforcements.
"Don't worry, we got this taken care of!" One of the Lazurian drivers informed the allied force. "Pull back and get yourselves fixed up, we can take care of this right here."
The allied units complied with the request, as they retreated behind the allied Lazurian forces, and headed for the nearby cities, where engineers quickly worked to repair what was still standing of the anti-air force.
Meanwhile, the infantry squads managed to take control of every unoccupied production facility to the west, as they were already pumping out missile and anti airs from the factories, while fighters were being produced for pilots to make use of, as Reisen commandeered one of them herself, as she took to the air, as her large wing of fighters, with several squads, followed behind her.
"The enemy air-force is likely to be dealt with. Switch all production tasks to producing ground vehicles to assault the enemy base. Will, I suggest you get your war tank ready, we need to crush the enemy swiftly, before they cause more trouble." Reisen advised her allies.
"I got it." Will respond back in affirmation, as he immediately boarded onto his war-tank, driving to the front-lines with an escort of rockets and medium tank squads, setting up position at the center of the battlefield, while Reisen and Weiss's forces defended the area from both ground and air, as the NRA force was repelled over and over again.
Before Will could make the order to advance, Waylon decided to make himself known through the channel.
"Well, I'll be dipped in nacho cheese… Someone put the damn kid in charge!" Waylon hooted. "You think you got a chance against me, brother man? Think again! I'm gonna get you like I got Brenner! Whoooooo!"
"Keep talking, Waylon! It'll be the last thing you ever do!" Will retorted back, as his hand clenched tightly around the driving wheel of the tank.
"Aw, don't sound so hostile, kid! I know you missed me! You gotta live my life, brother man! Food, drink, girls... I got it all! I'm living the high life while you're out there eatin' bugs and whatnot. So how about it?" Waylon responded back with a mocking tone. "Make things easy on your old selves... Just hand over the Lazurians, and I'll see that Greyfield rewards you. What do you say, brother man?"
"I can bet you that the 'bugs' we have been eating are far more healthy than the luxurious goods Greyfield feeds you!" Will taunted back. "You can take your 'high life' and shove it elsewhere! I'm not going to give up against you. We're going to fight and we're going to win!"
"Aw, hell! You're as bad as ol' Brenner! All ready to die just to defend a buncha damn Lazurians. Well, nothing for it! Looks like I'm gonna have to teach you a lesson!" Waylon scoffed.
"I don't need your biased lessons, Waylon." Will stated. "Whatever 'wisdom' you have to impart to me, I'm not listening. I'd sooner die at the barrel of a war-tank than hand the Lazurians, and then let you hand the rest of our people to Greyfield. If he's going to have us dead either way, then at least we'll die fighting our best!"
"Stuff it junior! You and your little toy soldiers make me sick! All self-righteous... Struttin' around like you own the damn joint... You ain't helpin' people because you care! You do it to feel important! You're a hypocrite, and you ain't better than me! Least I'm honest! Least ol' Waylon's honest about who and what I am." Waylon sneered.
Will was about to scream out in rage, before he then realized something, which made his rage melt away smoothly.
"...Maybe you're right." Will admitted, as his grip over the wheel loosened.
"Praise Greyfield! The boy sees the truth!" Waylon whooped.
"Maybe we are the same. You do what you want to do, and so do I. You fly around and act like a total jerk because it's what you want to do." Will stated. "And I help people because it's what I want to do, and I don't care what you have to say otherwise."
"...Why, you little sack of crap." Waylon threatened, his tone turning deadly.
"Does that make me a hypocrite? If I do nothing, people will suffer. People will die. You say I do this to feel important, and maybe you're right. But if that saves even one life, then it's worth it. Understand?" Will continued with a cold tone. "And what's more, don't pull the wool over my eyes with your 'honesty'. After fighting so long, I finally understand what kind of person you are. You're a leech who has no loyalty to anyone else. You said it yourself before, you get to do what you like, and no-one has the power to stop you. You could turn your back on Greyfield and you'd never lose a wink of sleep about it. You cheat and lie for only yourself, Waylon, and that's why, if I'm a little sack of crap, then you're basically the waste plant."
"Aw, nuts! I heard enough! Folks like you never live very long, anyway." Waylon growled. "I'm gonna bury you, kid! Send your regards to all of the fools down under!"
"You can try, Waylon. By the way, the leader of the raiders who caused the NRA much trouble before we even met? I was the one who killed him myself. My first kill actually." Will threatened back. "...I may not have been proud of being able to kill, but his death saved many more people. It was from that day I knew that I'm going to be more like Brenner. I will protect everyone… even if means if I have to bury people like you six feet under, Waylon. So if you want to kill me so badly… then know that the feeling's mutual… 'brother man'."
Before Waylon could even retort, Will shut down the connection to Waylon, as he gripped the driving wheel of his tank, before opening a channel to everyone. "Let's finish this. Everyone, stay alive and don't get yourself taken out." He ordered everyone.
"Roger that." Reisen nodded back, as she began to move forward towards the enemy air-force, while the other allied forces began to advance.
Reisen's squad began to encounter a large force of NRA fighters and dusters, as they began to attack the allied fighter squad, as they broke off to avoid the incoming missiles, popping flares in order to shake off the missiles, as the numerical advantage caused the NRA fighters to swarm the allied fighters.
However, the skill of the allied pilots proved to be the equalizing factor, as they managed to out-maneuver the NRA fighters, picking them off one by one, by engaging in dog-fights with vulnerable fighters, as their missiles and vulcans rarely missed their targets, causing their targets to be mercilessly shot down. Even though the allied fighters accumulated damage, they refused to let their chase of their prey down, performing both offensive and defensive maneuvers with agility and speed.
"Took a major hit to the left wing, close to the ammo compartment, gotta bug out!" One of the fighter pilots remarked, after taking an unlucky hit from an enemy missile to the wing, as the fighter retreated from the engagement zone.
Another allied fighter was being pursued by a trio of NRA fighters, as his hull was being pelted by the enemy vulcans, as he tried to shake them off, although his latest few attempts were not working. With little choice left, he immediately began to accelerate his fighter in preparation for a risky maneuver, as pushing the craft led it into a stream of stray bullets that barely missed the cockpit, and thankfully didn't hit the thrusters.
With a sudden motion, he then executed the cobra maneuver, as his body was pressed against the seat of his cockpit, as he struggled to keep the craft steady, while the NRA fighters shot past him, before he then righted the fighter, and pursued the enemy fighters.
WIthout another moment's hesitation, holding onto adrenaline, he immediately locked onto the enemy fighters, before firing missiles right into the enemy fighters, shaking them, as one of his squad-mates finished them off from above with their vulcan guns. With a sigh, the fighter pilot quickly turned around to engage the remaining enemies, while recovering himself from the high g-forces he suffered pulling the flight maneuver off.
Reisen herself was in a far more serious situation, as fighters all around began to pursue her, in an attempt to shot her down, as she was forced to evade oncoming vulcan fire that tapped along the hull of her fighter, and repeatedly jerking away to avoid missiles that she couldn't dispatch with her flares. However, her skill was enough to ensure that the enemy were far too dedicated to being on the offensive against her, as her diversion allowed her squad-mates to pick her enemies off, even though Reisen was beginning to become more and more at risk with each shot getting closer to hitting something critical.
She noticed another NRA fighter going for a pass on her, before she heard the shrill lock of a missile. Noticing the attacks coming from opposing sides, she quickly pulled the accelerator, as the fighter roared into action, as she throttled towards the oncoming fighter in a barrel roll to avoid the vulcan fire, before she then pulled a split-S maneuver just when the missiles were about to close-in on her, as the fighters were barely centimeters from each other, causing the missiles to cause friendly-fire, as the oncoming NRA fighter was turned into a flaming wreck thanks to a direct missile to the cock-pit.
Reisen then began climbing back up to altitude, as she targeted her pursuer, and fired missiles of her own in close-range, causing the NRA fighter to have no chance to deploy flares before it was torn by the explosive payload hitting its underbelly.
"...The enemy air force is mostly neutralised." Reisen stated, watching as NRA signatures fall off her radar, indicating the effectiveness of her fellow pilots. "How are you doing down on the ground, Commander Will?"
"We're closing on the enemy base!" Will shouted, as he directed the war-tank to fire on an anti-tank squad, taking a large number of them out, although his tank got pelted in return, while rockets rained everywhere, causing major casualties on the NRA ground forces.
"Now you see the tanks…" One of the anti-tank squad leaders remarked, before his squad fired on a majorly-damaged medium tank squad, eradicating them "...And now you don't! This baby got some real AP power to it, that's for sure!"
"Look, we got our air support!" One of the recon drivers remarked, pointing at the sky, as allied bombers and battle-copters reached the front-lines, raining destruction on the already-damaged NRA forces, as their defense lines were left broken, as Weiss watched from one of the transport copters, carrying a squad of snipers to secure the enemy base.
"It seems that for all of his talk, that wretch, Waylon doesn't fold his hand when he's at a loss here.' Weiss remarked. "All infantry squads move and secure the enemy head-quarters. Find Captain Waylon, and either terminate or capture him. Whatever choice you make, it is of no consequence to me."
"Affirmative." One of the mech squads responded back, as they landed right the enemy base, as they began to engage the defense forces allocated to it, the allied soldiers fighting back with high morale at the enemy's impending defeat, and well-trained technique that gave them an edge on the battle.
One by one, they breached the lines towards the enemy HQ, with minor casualties, and thanks to the aerial support of nearby battle-copters, the near-complete annihilation of all protecting forces, as they stormed the head-quarters, taking the non-combat personnel under control, as soldiers flooded into the HQ to find Waylon, only to find that Waylon wasn't there.
"Lieutenant Colonel, we have a no-go on the HVT. It seems that he has fled-" One of the squad-leaders remarked, before seeing the feed of Waylon's squad of fighters leaving the nearby air-port. "Wait, positive ID! The target is heading for a bearing escaping the battlefield!"
"Stop him!" Weiss shouted, as the nearby soldiers tried their best to shoot down Waylon, although they only managed to succeed in taking out all but one of his wingmen, as the two fighters took to the air,
Will saw the NRA fighters leave, as his war-tank was right near the NRA head-quarters.
"Where do you think you're going, Waylon!? Come back and finish this!" Will roared.
"Ah, to hell with you, I'm bailing out of here!" Waylon remarked. "I just don't get it! I just don't get people like you! The world's gone, brother! Ain't nothing out there worth fighting for! And yet here you are with your friends and your...hope! I don't get it! You oughta worry about YOU! Just like me!"
"You're right about one thing, Waylon… You should be concerned about where you're going." Weiss remarked, as she pulled out one of the weapon cases mounted on the transport copter, as it contained a guided missile launcher, as Weiss switched it on. "...You should be very concerned about yourself, now that you're right where I want you."
"What the hell are you blathering about!? You think you can shoot me down!? I'm the king of the skies, ain't nobody going to bring me down!" Waylon mocked. "You just sit back and watch me burn out of here!"
"Oh, you'll burn alright…." Weiss smirked darkly, as her launcher locked right onto Waylon's fighter, with a shrill signal. "...Consider this as the moment that I tore the wings off an unruly pigeon like you. When the underworld greets you, let's see where that swagger of yours will get you with the demonic ladies below."
Weiss then fired the launcher, as it launched a high-speed missile that began to follow after Waylon's fighter, even after the flares were deployed, as it was locked-right onto the electronic signature of Waylon's fighter.
"What the-" Waylon tried to finish, before the missile impacted the fighter, creating a massive blast that turned the fighter and the surrounding air into a blossom of fire, as what very little remained of the fighter rained down onto the ground, smoldering into slag.
"Good riddance to rubbish." Weiss scoffed, before she then lowered her launcher. "...This is Lieutenant Colonel Schnee, Captain Waylon of the NRA Is confirmed KIA. I repeat, Waylon is KIA."
"Copy that. Looks like Greyfield's only relevant supporter is out of the picture… we can finish this once and for all soon enough." Lin answered back. "Now then, what's your order, Commander?"
"We're pulling back. There's already enough wounded from this battle." Will answered back.
"It's time we prepare for taking down Greyfield. We're not going to let him have his way any longer."
The allied forces began to pull back, as the wounded were escorted off the battlefield, where they would be cared for back to health, as the officers helped to facilitate the process.
"So Waylon is down for good." Keiji remarked, as he was beside Ydine, as the both of them came out of the battle fairly unscathed. "...At least that self-centered and honorless wretch died a fiery painful death for his crimes."
"Do you think that the time to strike back on the NRA will be soon?" Ydine asked. "...The more we let that bastard Greyfield go rampant… the more we risk our infected. I already seen a fair few of my sisters infected and it's… it's not a pleasant sight."
"We'll pull through." Reisen answered back. "It will only be a matter of time before we will be able to finish the cure. And once we take down Greyfield, we will use what he pilfered from the people to ensure the infected will no longer have to fear their condition."
"How goes everything go, Lin? Tell us, how many casualties did we take from that fight?" Weiss asked Lin.
"We are down several units from the ground and air forces, due to the wounded being too high to sustain their operations currently." Lin responded back. "Fortunately for us, our fatalities are minimal, and thanks to the medical expertise of your medical personnel, I have hope that we will not suffer further deaths."
"Um… Will?" Isabella asked Will, coming out to greet Will.
"What is it?" Will asked back.
"Over there... There's someone in that building…" Isabella stated, pointing towards one of the buildings in the distance, which was near the allied base camp.
"OK. Let's check it out." Will nodded back.
"Not so fast, we can't be sure if the battlefield is safe yet." Weiss responded back. "Let me come with you, Will and Isabella, you need someone to protect you."
"...Alright." Will accepted Weiss's request.
They began to search the area, as Will and Isabella kept close to Weiss, who had her side-arm at the ready, and her comms at the ready, in case there was an ambush on them. Eventually, they entered the ruined building that Isabella was pointing towards, searching the entire one-storey building before they found nothing.
"...Sorry, Isabella, but I just don't see anybody." Will told Isabella. "And I can't imagine anyone would be here during a battle-"
"Someone's there. Behind me." Weiss answered back, when she heard the sound of approaching foot-steps, as she raised her side-arm. Will and Isabella did so quickly, as the sounds got closer and closer.
From around the corner, Mars appeared with his father, as the latter seemed to be fairly amused at the situation.
"Good day. Please, don't mind me. I'm just conducting a little research." The father greeted the trio.
"Um… Hi there." Will responded back, stepping out to show himself.
"Ah, Will. It is so very good to finally meet you. I believe you are the new commander of Brenner's Wolves. Congratulations are in order." The man responded back, before facing Weiss. "And I do believe that makes you Lieutenant Colonel Schnee of the 'Emerian' Army then."
"What in the… How do you know that? Who are you!?" Will exclaimed, unsettled by the man knowing his name and position.
"What's more… I sincerely doubt that you're just simply here for research." Weiss responded back, as his grip on the side-arm tightened. "...Don't think that I don't recognise that voice of yours. You have a lot of questions to answer for."
"Indeed you do, just as I have for you. But where are my manners?" The man smiled back with an eerie look on his face. "My name is Dr. Caulder. And as for my copious note taking... Well, I am researching the effects of warfare of the human spirit."
"You're doing what now?" Will stated.
"Ever since the meteors, I have traveled this world observing and recording. Those falling stars were a true boon for men of science like myself!" Caulder responded back.
"You're...researching us?" Will asked with shock, as Weiss's expression creased significantly.
"I have been able to witness and document the true nature of humankind! I have watched people fight among themselves as their food supplies ran dry... I have seen villages panic at mere rumors of disease and famine… I have observed it all. And I have found it to be…" Caulder responded back with an animated look of madness in his eyes, before throwing his arms out with maniacal glee. "FASCINATING!"
"You're-" Will was about to shout, before the sound of Weiss's safety being disengaged was heard.
"...Now I get it, you're the one responsible for destroying the crop factory back then… That was only a taste of your depravity." Weiss spoke with a frigid tone. "And then you were involved with the Lazurian Army to stir up war in this place… And then you somehow managed to spread the Creeper to the people of the last city we came across. You despicable bastard… I knew from the beginning that you were immoral and vile!"
"No! Merely curious. At first, I allied myself with the Lazurian Army. I wanted to see how war would be conducted in a world without law. But that Forsythe had a misplaced chivalrous spirit and was of little use to me. I offered him all manner of terrible new weapons, but he denied me at every turn. Little men such as he have always stood in the way of human progress." Caulder responded back, as Weiss's rage peaked.
"Don't mock a man such as him. He is a man who doesn't need to rely on such underhanded means to earn his victories. He has won his battles against his more wretched foe, and his only loss came at the hands of more talented leaders like me and Inaba." Weiss scowled. "A man who fights for the people, and respects the honor of war has no right being spoken like garbage by the likes of you."
"Qualities that I hope will no longer be respected in this new world of ours! At any rate, I had no use for him." Caulder scoffed. "So I turned instead to one devoid of all morality… Admiral Greyfield. He embraced my weapons! Even now, he prepares to use my masterpiece!"
"Masterpiece… what kind of-" Weiss demanded before the pieces clicked inside her head. "...It was you… you were the ones who handed those ICBMs right to Greyfield… If we didn't destroy them… then it would have-"
"Isn't it beautiful? The Caulder Missiles are powerful enough to wipe an entire city with a single warhead-" Caulder remarked.
"I'LL KILL YOU!" Weiss snapped, as she pulled the trigger, although Mars moved swiftly and directed Weiss's arm away, causing her shot to go wide.
"Sorry, but you lost your privilege to live when you tried to attack Father." Mars remarked, before Weiss grappled him and threw him away.
Mars landed against a wall, as he twisted himself to hit it feet-first, before he then bounced right off it, and tackled Weiss to the ground, while knocking her side-arm away, as it skidded right before Will's feet, as Mars and Weiss began to wrestle with each other, as the two of them were in a dead-lock, as they were constantly switching positions every moment or so.
"It seems that I made a smart choice to bring Mars here." Caulder remarked, the smile not leaving his face. "I never thought that I have come so close to making a mistake in showing myself. But again, a better mind prevails."
"You... You're evil!" Will exclaimed, as he made no move to pick up the gun at his feet, worried that Caulder might have set another trap.
"Eh?" Caulder muttered in response.
"Dr. Morris once asked me if I believed in evil. In people who felt glad the world was destroyed." Will continued with a glare. "Now I know they exist. I'm looking at one."
"Were I a more emotional man, I might be hurt by such words! I have done nothing wrong, Will." Caulder answered back. "I am the very model of an objective, scientific observer! Like all men of science, I have merely followed my heart and studied what interested me. But I see you will never understand that. A pity!"
"I don't need to understand you! No matter how much proof you have, nothing justifies what you have done!" Will shouted back in defiance.
Caulder merely scowled, before he then turned to leave, as Weiss managed to get the advantage, as she attempted to choke Mars out with both hands to his neck, and knees pressing him down.
"Will! Get the gun! You have to kill him!" Weiss exclaimed to Will. "That bastard can't be allowed to live if he can do all of this!"
Will looked down at the gun, before he then picked it up, as he tried to fire it, only to find that it was emptied, as the magazine wasn't even in the gun. Weiss noticed this, as he looked back at Mars, who was holding the gun magazine, before he then rose and head-butt Weiss hard enough to knock her back, and slam her against the back of the wall enough to give Weiss a concussion, causing her to slump against the wall in a daze.
"Sorry, but in the end, you aren't a match against me." Mars stated, before he then turned to Will and Isabella, as shock went through his face. "Wait… That's…!"
"Oh, before I forget... I must recognize all the hard work my daughters have been putting in…" Caulder remarked, giving Isabella a simple look. "We are making steady progress. Do carry on."
"What the hell, father, what are you doing, can't you see that's-" Mars exclaimed with a flustered expression with an outraged tone, gesturing at Isabella. "You've been looking for all this time, and you're just going to let her be!?"
"And?' Caulder remarked with a bland tone. "It doesn't matter where she is. In the end, she fulfilled her purpose."
"Wait, why do I-" Isabella was about to say, before she was struck with a head-splitting pain, as she clutched her head, screaming in pure agony.
"Isabella! What did you do to her?" Will demanded, as he was about to rush for the dropped magazine to load the gun in his hands.
"I suggest you speak to her instead of me. She doesn't have much time left." Caulder responded back, as Mars raised a gun of his own, pointing it back at Will, forcing Will to remain still.
"You!" Will growled.
"Greyfield is on his way with my masterpiece in his hands. Whatever will happen...? Hmmm... I think I will need more notepads." Caulder mused, before he then walked away, as Mars remained behind to keep Will still.
After Caulder was out of ear-shot, Mars lowered his gun and turned away.
"...Take good care of her, Will." Mars remarked, before he then leapt over a window, and ran out of sight.
"Hey, wait!" Will shouted, although Mars was long gone by then. He then turned to Isabella, who just recovered from the sudden bout of pain to her head. "Isabella! Can you hear me! Are you OK?"
"Y-yes... I'm s-sorry, Will." Isabella stuttered slightly, straightening herself up.
"I was so worried." Will stated with relief. "I thought you were-"
"That man... I've seen him before." Isabella responded back.
"Where?" Will asked.
"I don't know. I don't know who he is or where I met him. But I know him. He is a very, very frightening man…" Isabella stated. "But that's not what hurt me the most… That boy who called himself Mars… I feel like we were so close. Despite his threatening appearance… His presence comforted me slightly… And he looked so sad just then."
"I wonder…" Will responded back, as Weiss finally recovered, groaning while clutching the back of her head.
"...Damnit, I didn't think that this guard of Caulder's would have been this good. No wonder he has the appearance and physique of Richard…" Weiss answered back. "He has to be what we were looking for."
"Weiss…?' Will asked back, as Weiss turned back to her.
"We can only cut our losses right now. Be fortunate that none of the nearby forces have detected any of his forces. Or we would have been in deep trouble." Weiss answered back. "Come on, we need to report this."
It did not take long for the trio to return, as Lin, Weiss, Reisen, Isabella, Will and Morris were present to discuss their latest findings.
"Good heavens! Dr Caulder is still alive!?" Morris exclaimed with horror.
"You know him?" Will asked back.
"I know of him! And more than I'd like... Caulder is an infamous figure in the medical world. A mad genius despised by all his contemporaries." Morris explained with concern. "He was thrown out of the medical academy for conducting bizarre, unethical experiments. A year later, he sustained terrible injuries in a suspicious plane crash. But this has only emboldened him to continue his horrible research. This world is a much more dangerous place with him in it."
"And I can see the motives behind it all…" Reisen commented. "I should have known that Mars did not tell the full truth before… And now that we know that he has some relation to Isabella… there might be a clue to her past there."
"Wait. Are we talking about the same Caulder? The one in charge of IDS?" Lin asked.
"IDS!? The same thing that Isabella ended up getting overwhelmed by speaking of!?" Weiss exclaimed.
"IDS stands for Intelligent Defense Systems." Lin explained. "Before the meteors, they were the world's largest military contractor. They had connections at the highest levels of Rubinelle government, with contracts in everything from weapons to medicine to food. The war between Rubinelle and Lazuria was especially profitable for them."
"Why, he's nothing more than a common war profiteer!" Morris added.
"I think it will get worse from there." Reisen piped in. "I do believe that he might have some responsibility in the mutation of the Creeper strain, if his words are to be believed, with how insane they sound. If he did this, he must be doing this to wipe humanity out, but what purpose does that serve, if he needs the race for his experiments?"
"Let's not dwell upon that. Right now, we have worse. The 'Caulder Missiles' that were sent to kill Brenner were the masterpieces that Caulder gave to Admiral Greyfield." Weiss said, before turning to Isabella. "Isabella, tell me, what are those missiles!?"
"They are equipped with a hyper-reactive explosive payload. When he said that a single one can destroy an entire city, it means complete annihilation, 100% destruction and casualties." Isabella stated. "Both nations possessed enough missiles to destroy the other nation tenfold, and they were developed by the IDS and located within Rubinelle and Lazuria. They were designed to launch at the same time, all of them."
"So if Greyfield takes control of the missiles…" Will theorized. "...Greyfield, you madman…!"
"The world barely survived an apocalypse, Will." Reisen bluntly stated. "The missiles will bring upon another, one that the world will definitely not survive. We are looking at the end of humanity as we know it. Even if there are survivors, Caulder will just simply swoop in and achieve his long-standing goal. Survival or death, humanity is done for if Greyfield uses the missiles."
"That leaves no choice but to confront him." Weiss scowled. "...Like it or not, no matter how bad the odds might be, considering that Caulder would have definitely given him no less aid than he gave Lazuria when we were still with the NRA, if not far more… We have to finish the NRA off. It's victory or death now, with the fate of the world at stake here."
"I know. We'll stop him, we have to…! Everyone, get the forces prepared. We're going to strike the NRA head-quarters, and we're not going to stop." Will agreed.
The officers acknowledged Will's orders, as they left the room, as Reisen followed Lin.
"Lieutenant… Lin. Before you go, I have something to give you." Reisen told Lin, who turned around to face her, as Reisen produced a medical syringe containing a green solution inside of it. "I know that you're nearing the end of the prodromal period, the phase before the Creeper truly hits. Morris at least cooperated with me on that aspect. So I want you to take this, before you head to the next mission."
"What is it?" Lin asked back.
"The cure. I saved a dose of it myself, just in case that you would have refused to use it under the standards that you wouldn't let yourself be cured until you fulfilled your role." Reisen stated. "...I know how much Brenner's state affected you. And despite the fact that he is set to awaken soon… you feel that until Greyfield's head is on a figurative pike, you don't have the right to see him."
"That's…" Lin stated.
"Please, Lieutenant, do not let your pride in your duty cloud your judgment. There are people who are also counting on you. You might not be well-liked among the civilian population, but you are well-respected by your men for your excelling qualities in leading them with Will." Reisen responded back. "You cannot simply choose to risk death because you believe that it's the only way that you feel like would be the proper way to end things. Promise me that if you are coming down badly with the Creeper, that you'll take it. Brenner will not take your death lightly, especially if you died pushing yourself. Believe me… this is not the kind of death someone of your position deserves."
"...Alright, I'll keep it at hand." Lin nodded back, taking the syringe from Reisen.
"There is also one more thing that I must request of you. I know that you will be leading the charge against the NRA… because it's your personal feud. So I must ask you…" Reisen stated, before she then leaned into Lin's ear, and whispered her request, as the wording surprised Lin slightly.
"...This is what you want?" Lin responded back.
"Believe me, I have personal reasons for this, and medical reasons as well." Reisen responded back. "...I'm sure that my request does not conflict with your desires, am I right?"
"...No, I'm just simply… surprised that you would do such a thing. Will and Brenner would definitely not approve of such a cruel action." Lin answered back with a frown.
"And that is why we will be the only ones who know of this." Reisen answered back, before she then turned to leave. "...Take care, Lin. Please take what I have said to you under consideration."
Reisen then walked away, as Lin looked at the syringe with a pondering expression, before she stowed it on her person.
It did not take long for the allied army to reach the NRA headquarters, as the NRA were too scattered outside of the headquarters to actually make any notable force to stop their advance, as all of the units set up a perimeter south of the NRA head-quarters, where scouts reported the enemy numbers.
"The reports came in." Weiss responded back. "Greyfield expected us to come to him and finish this fight once and for all. I can see that his numbers are no less than our own, and he has a sizable force at the ready. We will not win this fight easily, I'm afraid."
"That force is huge. Maybe we should retreat and plan a strategy." Will answered back.
"That's not an option anymore." Reisen responded back. "One of our infiltration cells managed to find out that Greyfield is already starting to make use of the Caulder missiles. They are closing on the activation of the missile silos, with 72 hours until safety protocols are removed. The NRA must be dismantled by then, or else the world ends."
"Alright, if that's the case, then I'll take the troops and-"
"No, I'll do it." Lin answered back. " I mean... Permission to lead the troops, Commander?"
"Why?" Will asked back with disbelief.
" I know you and Brenner were close, but he was my...my captain. I failed him." Lin responded back. "I owe him this. Plus, I have the virus and you don't. ...I have nothing to lose… but my own life. If the virus makes me succumb before Brenner wakes… you're his new second-in-command."
"Lin…" Will exclaimed. "Alright, all units, I defer the command of the battle to Lieutenant Lin. Please, Lin. Let me at least help you on the field with the war-tank. You'll need as much help as you can get."
"I couldn't expect any less." Lin answered back. "All units, scout the area out. We need to be precisely aware of the enemy locations. Admiral Greyfield, however incompentent he is, is a master of naval warfare. His navy will tear through any units that are in their path. We need to effectively neutralize his navy before we can close in on the headquarters."
"We have a navy of our own." Weiss answered back. "All fleet units advance near the islands, and remain in position to ambush enemy forces."
"Understood." One of the battleship captains answered back, as the cruisers and battleships moved into formation, as they remained in range of the bridges leading towards the headquarters, and the islands, where there were production facilities to produce more units to fight the enemy off with.
The infantry divisions began to hop on any vehicle that was within their reach, as rigs transported them through to the connected islands, while gunboats and landers provided a sea route for capture units to ride upon, as the islands were already invaded by allied units, as they began to capture whatever they could lie their eyes upon.
As for the armored divisions, they began to gather around the eastern front of the battlefield, as they slowly crossed the bridges, with the war-tanks and medium tanks leading the charge, with rockets and artillerys falling behind to provide supporting fire. They were among the first to encounter enemy resistance, as they found that there was a NRA anti-tank squadron advancing towards them.
"Hook, line and sinker!" One of the artillery spotters remarked, lowering his binoculars. "Give them some gifts for our little visit!"
The mobile artillery began to adjust their cannons to aim for the enemy, as did the rockets, as they began to shower shells and rockets right into the mobile anti-tank squadron, destroying them quickly, as the allied tanks began to slowly advance down the bridges.
"Will, hold position on the bridge, I don't think that it is a wise tactic to charge the enemy, when their navy could have battleships that could blow your ground force to pieces." Lin contacted Will. "Let me see what we can do on the naval front. Hunker down and get your rockets and artillery in position."
"Got it." Will responded back, as the forces began to fortify themselves near the south end of the bridge.
Meanwhile, the allied navy began to move towards the enemy navy, before they saw that there was an entire fleet of battleships, with several escorts in the form of cruisers and submarines.
"Enemy fleet spotted, sir!" One of the battleship crew members reported to his captain. "It seems that the battleships are preparing to move towards our position. What are our orders!?"
"Full steam ahead! All crew to battle-stations!" The captain declared. "Send a message to our fellow battleships and cruisers, we are going to initiate the battle against the enemy fleet!"
The allied fleet moved into motion, as the battleships moved in front of the cruisers and gun-boats, as they began to fire off their main cannons towards the enemy fleet, as the concentrated attack managed to take out several of the enemy battleships, although the return fire punished the allied fleet considerably, as the falling shells managed to take out several cruisers, and cripple one of the battleships.
"Sir, several ships are confirmed sunk! OAN Asagi, OAN Kunishima, OAN Yasoshi, EAN Sulker, EAN Rushwall are the casualties from the last barrage! The Freewitch also lost 50% combat efficiency, with most of its secondaries destroyed from the direct hits!"
"Order the Freewitch to retreat back for quick repairs." The captain remarked, before contacting Lin. "Lieutenant, I must request that you have one of the rigs prepare a temporary port to serve as a repair and resupply point. We will need all of the aid in order to win the naval front."
"Your request has been acknowledged. We will have the temporary port set on the central island. Do note that we will have a proper naval port captured for our use imminently, so take that into consideration." Lin responded back.
The captain then turned back to the front, as both UGF and UUF subs began to move forward, as they encountered the NRA subs under the water surface, as both sides began to trade torpedoes with each other, although the assistance of the allied cruisers with their depth charges managed to turn the odds, as the allied subs managed to push through with their enemy destroyed, as they took aim at the enemy battleships.
"Alright, pinpointing weak spots." One of the sub operators remarked. "We got people counting on us for taking that fleet of battleships down. The sooner we take this down, the sooner we can have our carriers deploy sea-planes to assault the enemy forces with death from above."
The subs then fired off their torpedoes into the enemy fleet, as the explosions managed to severely damage the battleships, if not sink them outright, as the enemy fleet was crippled heavily by the attack, leaving them sitting ducks to the advancing allied naval forces.
"It seems that we've effectively won the naval front." Lin sighed with relief. "Alright, all carriers, proceed with the deployment of sea-planes, to scout and bombard the enemy ground forces. Will, you have the all-clear to advance-"
"Treacherous swine! Inglorious, backstabbing vermin!" Greyfield spat through the public channels, as the insults were pointed at Lin, who turned her attention to him.
"You are one charming fellow, Greyfield." Lin remarked with a dry tone, filled with sarcasm.
"You pathetic traitors understand nothing! You can't see that war is caused by the fact that other nations exist. I shall be the man to unite all the world into one nation! I will be the man to end all war forever!" Greyfield ranted without any restraint.
"And humble too. I like it." Lin scoffed.
"Save the sarcastic asides for your tombstone, dog! That meteor strike and all that followed was a test! The situation demands that a natural leader unite the survivors below him. And I, King Greyfield, shall be that leader!" Greyfield roared.
"That is a great plan. Let me ask you something." Lin remarked, before her tone turned heated. "Once everyone is below you, will you stop being such a coward?"
"Wh-what...?! You dare to-" Greyfield fumed.
"I've seen your records. I know you were a subpar commander at best. And you know it too. That's why you strut around like a playground bully. You hid your shame by faking results and taking credit for the work of-'' Lin seethed with a frigid tone to her voice.
"Silence! Enough of your loathsome falsehoods, you treasonous hound!" Greyfield shouted.
"NO! That's enough out of YOU, you lying, sniveling, fat man! You're a coward and a liar and I have had enough out of it!" Lin snapped. "For what you have done to the Captain, for what you have done to all of the people who had to suffer under your command… I will end your pathetic reign myself. You started this fight, and now I'm going to be the one to finish it. You aren't going to walk away from this, Greyfield. Nothing will stop me from taking you down!"
The ground forces began to make their way forward, as the allied tanks began to assault the enemy forces on the landmass around the head-quarters, as one of the NRA war-tanks was blown to pieces by a combined barrage from several medium tanks, as the attack managed to hit several critical weak-points that contributed to the large vehicle's demise.
"We got them on the run!" Will shouted, as the allied forces were making a quick advance on the enemy headquarters.
The carriers began to produce air-planes, as they shot towards the enemy headquarters, as the enemy forces stationed around it were being decimated, as buildings were blasted apart, and entire units were lost.
"Looks like they're really squeezing themselves dry to try for a chance to beat us." One of the sea-plane pilots remarked. "...I'm beginning to feel bad for these bastards, working for a total nut-case of an admiral who gives no shit about their lives."
Will's force managed to reach the headquarters, as he blasted the gates to it open with a single shot of his cannon, as the other ground force units swarmed over the entire area, as they engaged in a fire-fight in favor of the allies, as the NRA forces were being neutralized left and right, either by surrender or being shot down, with the former more common with how shattered the morale of the NRA army was.
Eventually, the allied forces managed to take the headquarters under control, as the men took the NRA command captive, although none of the units could find Greyfield anywhere.
"So Greyfield fled the coop…" Lin remarked. "It doesn't matter. I'm sure that my scouts must have tracked him down. Now, it's time I finish the job… and keep my side of the deal with Reisen."
Lin then immediately boarded a transport copter, as she commanded the pilot to head towards where she last suspected Greyfield to have fled to, as she managed to track him down fleeing on a jeep.
"Retreat! Retreat! All units, retreat!" Greyfield bellowed, as he was alone on the jeep, as if he distrusted any of his men to escape. "When I find out who is responsible, I will have them executed immediately! I am the supreme leader of the world! I am the strongest of all men! Defeat is only for the weak!"
"You're right." Lin remarked, as she picked up a sniper rifle loaded on the transport copter, as she sniped the left wheels of the jeep, as it send the entire vehicle careening across the ground.
Lin then let the transport copter lower itself where the wreck of the jeep was, as Greyfield managed to come out lightly wounded by fortune, although he barely was able to free himself, before he came face to face with Lin, letting out a mighty shriek of fear as he scooted away.
"Defeat is for the weak. You were defeated because you were weak." Lin declared, walking slowly towards Greyfield, as he tried to get away. "And now you're going to die."
"Y-you wouldn't dare!" Greyfield exclaimed.
"Actually, I would. Will wouldn't. Will would try to put you on trial or something. But Will isn't here. Is he?" Lin coldly declared, as she raised her side-arm, pointing it at Greyfield.
"You wouldn't dare...! Y-you can't...! You can't do this!" Greyfield exclaimed.
"You think that position gives me the right to pull the trigger? You're sorely mistaken, Greyfield." Lin declared, shaking her head slowly. "You are responsible for ordering the deaths of the 12th Rubinelle Battalion and their allies for unjustifiable reasons, and the deaths of thousands of civilians and non-combatants from both Lazuria and Rubinelle. Will and the Captain will not like it, but it's what needs to be done."
"Stop! I... I... I surrender! I surrender my forces to you! Th-there! You can't hurt me now! I am a prisoner of war! C-C-Captain Brenner would never hurt a prisoner! It's murder!" Greyfield pleaded. "If you kill me, you're as bad as me! You'll be just the same as me!"
"...Huh. I guess you're right. It's funny that you use that excuse to try and spare your measly life." Lin remarked with a faint smirk of irony on her face, before she then pulled the trigger, as the gun went right through both of Greyfield's knees, causing him to scream in pain. "You're right, I won't kill you right now, because someone suggested to me a better way for you to die. I can tell you this, Greyfield, you're going to suffer long before you expire, in an ironic fate. No-one will even know what happened, no matter how they look. For all they know, you fled away to unknown places. But the Major and I… we know how your life ends… rotting away by the same disease you have been so afraid of."
Lin then pistol-whipped Greyfield hard enough to give him a concussion, as she gestured at the personnel aboard the transport copter. "Take him to the allied base. We will deal with him there." She ordered them, as the crew moved the unconscious Greyfield onto a transport copter, as they headed back to the camp, where they were greeted by Reisen, who had a group of soldiers standing by.
"...Did you do it?" Reisen asked back, before Lin showed Greyfield, who had a bag over his head to hide his face from the other troops.
Reisen then gestured for her men to take Greyfield into one of the isolation cells inside the medical area, far away from even Dr Morris's view.
"It's done… He'll never see the light of day again, as long as I can help it." Reisen told.. "He will enjoy his last meals with only myself as his potential company. And when he inevitably perishes from the virus… his body will be used as autopsy to study the virus further, and will be buried in an unmarked grave, to represent how meaningless and unwanted his life was."
"You sound like you wish a cruel fate upon him." Lin answered back. "Even I believe this is crossing the line."
"I know. And I'm sorry you feel that way. But killing him would be a mercy he doesn't get to have." Reisen answered back, clenching his fists. "Taking an iron fist over a scarred land like this, and intending to destroy the world for his insane megalomania… his fate will not be pleasant."
Lin and Reisen remained silent for a moment, before Reisen sighed.
"Let us not dwell on such dark things." Reisen answered back, before smiling. "Cheer up a little, Lin. We managed to win, and stop Greyfield from destroying what remained of the world. Also, with what we might have… we might even have the vaccine ready to ensure that you are well… Did you use the cure that I gave you?"
"...No. But I don't feel that things are getting worse for me." Lin responded back. "...I think I can hold out until that vaccine has been made for me."
"That's good to hear." Reisen nodded.
After all of the units have returned, the entire army began to throw a celebration at their major victory, as civilians and military alike were cheering for the fall of Greyfield and the NRA, and the beginning of a peaceful future.
"We did it! We won!" One of Brenner Wolves soldiers exclaimed with glee.
"The war is over! You did it! Hurrah for Brenner's Wolves!" One of the elder civilians exclaimed. "Hip hip! Hooray!"
"Will! Everyone! Listen up!" Morris exclaimed, standing atop one of the podiums to make his announcement. "I just discovered huge stocks of the vaccine we need in Greyfield's headquarters! I think we can keep the infected alive long enough for me to find a cure. We did it! We did it! Oh ho ho ho!"
"Yeah, we... We did." Will answered back with a dejected tone.
"Oh ho! This is no time for frowns. It's over! We won!" Morris stated. "It's time for the biggest celebration this world has ever seen!"
"Dr. Morris? I don't think Will…" Isabella was about to say, before Weiss stepped up.
"...Will, you're not thinking about what we have lost in our battle?" Weiss asked back.
"We... We lost so many. So many people." Will admitted. "A better commander could have prevented such losses. I'm just...not in the mood for a party. I'm sorry."
"Typical." Lin scoffed. "If you were bigger and had better hair, I'd swear you were actually Brenner."
"Lin, I…" Will started.
"We all love ya, Will, but please... Stop feeling sorry for yourself." Lin stated. "You're the cadet who defeated an admiral. I think that's good enough."
"But without you and everyone-" Will tried to argue, as Reisen stepped up.
"Will, listen to me. You have taken my teachings well, and you led us well up to now. What happened on the battlefield is not entirely your fault. Some men die because of bad situations which you had little control over. You have the heart and charisma to lead your men into a fight with blazing hearts." Reisen answered back. "Even when the odds were bad, your words inspired them to fight on regardless. If you never stepped up, we would have lost more men than we would with you leading. You should be more proud of what you have accomplished. Brenner would say the same."
"So let's have a party." Ydine remarked with a smug expression on her face, holding a beer bottle in one hand, and wrapping the other arm around Keiji. "You really deserve one, kid."
"...Yeah, alright." Will nodded back.
"Oh ho ho ho! Now THAT'S the spirit! Although there is one more piece of good news that I should show you." Morris stated. "Please, if you all would come with me."
The officers followed Morris right into the medical wing, as they headed for Brenner's ward. Much to everyone's shock, Brenner was up on his feet, as he was sporting a few bandages, although he looked like he was as healthy as he was before the escape from the NRA.
"...Captain Brenner?" Will exclaimed with shock.
"You're…" Lin started with wide eyes.
"At ease, everyone. I suppose that things got a bit bad back then." Brenner remarked with a smile on his face. "I'm merely relieved that none of you have gotten into something terrible while I was down."
Lin then walked over and seized Brenner in a hug, as she cried softly. "You stupid idiot, look what you have done to yourself. Are you proud of what you have done?" Lin remarked. "But thank you… thank you for staying alive."
"Always glad to be." Brenner answered back, patting Lin's back, before turning to Reisen and Weiss. "I assume that the battles have ended right now?"
"It's good to have you back, Captain Brenner." Reisen answered back with a crisp salute. "While you were unconscious from your wounds, we have managed to ensure the loyalty of both the civilian populace, and the Lazurian military. Over the days, we even managed to find General Forsythe who was alive… and we put an end to the NRA and Admiral Greyfield. He won't ever bother us again."
"By the way, Captain, I should tell you a little surprise. While you were out of command… we had to decide on someone who would lead Brenner's Wolves in your stead." Weiss added. "It took us a bit of time to decide it, but I'm sure that you would be proud of our choice, and how it paid off."
"...Who was it?" Brenner asked back, before Reisen and Weiss pointed towards Will. "...Will?"
"Yeah, sorry, Captain… It was Lin's, Reisen's and Weiss's choice. They said that they needed me to rally the people together. I managed to get us through several battles against the NRA, and IDS, who have been attacking us under the orders of Dr Caulder." Will admitted. "Don't worry, we managed to get through with most of us intact."
"I see… In that case…" Brenner remarked, before he then walked forward, and placed a hand on Will's shoulder with a proud expression. "...I'm proud of you, Will. I always thought that you would have been a great commander, with how you acted. Thank you for taking good care of my men, and making sure that as many of them came back in one piece."
"It's… It's always my pleasure… Sir." Will smiled back.
"Now then, I've got a few classic jokes that I save for special occasions…" Morris remarked, as he headed back to the celebration.
"...Oh, that reminds me." Weiss stated. "We should have you at the party. I'm sure your men would literally cry at your return to the field, out of pure gratitude and relief."
"Come on, Captain… you deserve a celebration to help lift your spirits up." Reisen convinced Brenner.
"...Lead the way, sir." Brenner nodded back, as he leaned against Lin as support.
The officers then left the medical wing, as they headed towards the celebration, as a reprieve from the terrible world they have fought against for so long.
Term of the Chapter: Transport Copters
Both UGF and the UUF make use of transport copters as a means to get their units on the field. The Shouji-class transport copters of the UGF are known for being versatile in both air and space with variable engine modes to assist in both environments. The Steelbeaks of the UUF are known for being able to transport entire squads of armor to and from the field, with high weight capacities and good stability.
