For someone hoping to become an Auror, not recognizing a hairdryer was a worrying sign of Fay Dunbar's lacklustre deductive skills.
Additionally, Hermione's roommate wasn't in her NEWT Potions class. It was poor planning on Fay's part if she aspired to a career in law enforcement. It galled Hermione that Fay, the only Gryffindor aside from her to receive an Outstanding OWL in Potions, let Snape scare her off continuing a necessary class.
Apart from their scholastic talents, Fay and Hermione shared little aside from a dorm. The muggle vs. magically raised gap, sometimes, was just too far to bridge.
