149. Slytherin's basilisk

It was dark and dank, so she slept.

Enough vermin (and few enough humans) encroached on her domain, so the basilisk remained content to stay in the Chamber. With no Heir to call on her services, she made herself comfortable in her hidden nest — sated, but not sane.

Then a flame-haired child came in and brightened the basilisk's world.

The girl was intrinsically bound up in her former master's dark aura. Riddle's voice wove sibilantly with hers as the basilisk responded to its first commands received in decades. Predatory instincts roared to life. She gloried in having purpose once more.
