A.N. — Today's installment is a woebegone Auror, as a counterpoint to yesterday's Death Eater. It also starts three days in a row of following book 5's timeline.

167. John Dawlish

Auror John Dawlish previously tried (and failed) to take Albus Dumbledore into custody; what made his superiors think he'd be able to handle arresting Rubeus Hagrid?

Either way, the outcome was the same: the target fled, leaving Dawlish unconscious. Against Dumbledore, it was no great surprise to be thwarted. But in botching Hagrid's capture, Dawlish had also been responsible for sending an innocent party (McGonagall) to St. Mungo's.

Dawlish's reputation in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement had been on shaky ground, but this would see it stained forever. John would care deeply about this, but was still out cold.

A.N. 2 — I had a second scenario in mind for this drabble: Dawlish being tasked with rescuing Umbridge from the centaurs, and weighing the pros and cons of doing so. The herd will be touched on tomorrow.
