Despite Harry saving him, Dudley is sure the dementors still managed to suck out a bit of his soul. How else to explain the absence of aggression toward his cousin in the aftermath of his unseen, yet still traumatizing, experience?
Being confronted with a literal spectre of death made Dudley see things he'd rather not examine. All of his transgressions were thrust to the fore, and it painted a picture of prolonged bullying that he'd thoroughly enjoyed. Harry was his main target, and now the zeal of focusing on him had faded.
Now, only if his parents would follow suit...
