As an Unspeakable, Broderick Bode was supposed to be above and beyond: an unnoticeable shadow answering to no-one, capable of functioning as a one-man army, impervious to coercion.
His lying in hospital, mind addled, would beg otherwise.
Bode had no inkling his chance run-in with Harry Potter had sealed his fate. Lucius Malfoy found out about their interaction and chose to Imperius Bode to obtain a prophecy. Broderick resisted but still ran afoul of the orbs' protections.
In his moments of lucidity, Bode suspected the ugly plant at his bedside was his boss' way of telling him he was fired.
