Marvolo Gaunt was an intensely proud man, but his egotism blinded him to the numerous faults rife in his life.
Morfin was held up as an example to follow, for his mistrust and mistreatment of muggles. Merope was lambasted for her weak magic and wandering eyes. Marvolo took all the credit for the former and none of the blame for the latter.
