The Smith family was well-known for their ties to Helga Hufflepuff. That got Zacharias Smith sorted into the badger sett. Any other Hufflepuff traits were conspicuously absent.
Nowhere was this more exemplified than the DA. Zacharias had attended the initial gathering only because he heard his housemates talking about it, only stayed at first to hear Harry explain how Cedric died. At subsequent meetings, a skeptically scoffing Smith openly criticized Potter. It endeared Zacharias to no-one.
After the group's dissolution, Zacharias continued his pestering of its members. Ginny bat-bogeyed him for it on the Express, and spread the word around.
