Though he fervently believed in their ideals, Orion Black was not a Death Eater. For that, he credited his mother's influence.
Melania Black (née Macmillan) had generations of traceable lineage as a member of one of the Sacred Twenty-Eight families. Yet for all her aristocratic trappings, she was a moderating presence. In politics, this played out as mediating debates between factions. At home, Melania too played arbiter, refuting Arcturus' hardline dogma to set an example for their son.
None of it helped, in the end. Orion married his second cousin Walburga, buying fully into the dark, degenerate Black family traditions.
