Relationships between bosses and subordinates just wasn't a done thing in the conservative British Ministry of Magic. So Elphinstone Urquart and Minerva McGonagall's interactions remained cordial while employed with the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.
Elphinstone was enamored with the sharpness in Minerva's eyes, sucked into hidden depths denoting a mind being stifled by a job that wasn't truly her passion. It warmed his heart that those gorgeous eyes lit up when she saw him. But it was always tinged with an undercurrent of internalized guilt. Elphinstone would do anything to make Minerva see that she was worthy of love.
