A.N. — As I mentioned yesterday, today's character was incarcerated on yesterday's testimony. I planned for this drabble to be the comeuppance to compliment the previous chapter, but the focus wound up not being squarely enough on the right person. This chapter still wound up being a split-focus revenge piece, though.

302. Augustus Rookwood

Augustus Rookwood would argue that his information network, fostered through his spy position within the Department of Mysteries, was more valuable to the cause than Lucius Malfoy's piles of gold. Yet it was Rookwood who spent 15 years wasting away in Azkaban. Unlike Malfoy's fortune, his insider knowledge didn't buy his freedom.

Lucius feasted on the finest foods while Augustus was feasted upon by the Dementors. Rookwood used his bitterness to keep his mind sharp as he awaited his release. And when freedom was finally granted, Lucius had gone soft, while Augustus remained a deadly tool for his Lord's use.
