The funeral preparations took longer than anticipated. Before he knew it, five days had passed. Mostly because his father couldn't decide whether to have his wife buried on the farm or in Carvahall where she was born.

In the end, she was buried on the farm. People from the village paid their respects to their family. Although his father wasn't all that liked, the same couldn't be said about his mother. All the while Garrow kept him close to his side. The man had become more clingy than he would have liked. While he understood, Roran was impatient to find Eragon.

He hadn't seen the boy since chasing him out the farmhouse. Roran could only hope that he was nearby. Roran didn't like venturing into the Spine without Eragon, but he would if he wanted to find the boy and apologize.

At first, Roran had been opposed to the idea. Why should he be the one to apologize first? After leaving the farmhouse and getting (barely) some sleep, he had time to think. He hadn't done anything wrong! So, truthfully, it wasn't only the preparations that held him back.

But he also knew Eragon. And he knew Eragon enough to know that if he didn't say anything first, then neither of them would.

Roran liked to think of himself as the more mature between the two. As much as he would like to wait for Eragon to break first, he not only had the responsibility of looking after the farm and father but after his brother as well. And, well, it gave him the opportunity to get away from the house for a while.

Roran couldn't stand how empty the house felt now that his mother was gone. The lack of singing. The lack of familiar smells. His father wandered around with a haunted look to his face.

Roran had barely been able to stay at her funeral. It was unfair how she had been taken from them, and he found himself actually looking forward to being in the Spine rather than being home. So the next time his father took a nap, he took the opportunity to sneak out of the house.

Before Garrow awoke, he was out the door.
