a Brightburn/Dragon Ball crossover fanfic inspired by What If…?

There are times when one can expect a happy ending. But in this universe, there is no such thing as a happy ending.

Chapter 1 - Turning Point

"I want to do good, Mom," Brandon Breyer broke down emotionally in front of his mother Tori. "I do."

Recently, he discovered that he was not like ordinary people. He learned that he had superpowers, and that he was an alien who crash landed on Earth when he was a baby. However, he did not use them for the good of humanity. Instead, he used them to terrorize and murder people, starting with his girlfriend Caitlyn Connor's mother Erika, who called him an animal for breaking her right hand. He then murdered his Uncle Noah, making it look like a car accident, and then his father Kyle, by blowing up his head with his heat vision. He then brutally murdered two police officers at his house. Tori found the spaceship he crashed to Earth in and took a broken glass shard from it, realizing that it would end him.

"And you will," Tori calmly replied.

Brandon came to her, embracing her, weeping, burying his face in her shoulder. Tori also cried as she held him, stroking the back of his head.

"You will always be my baby boy," she whispered.

Tori secretly took the broken shard from her side, lifting it, about to plunge it into Brandon's neck when he caught her wrist. He glared at her in a mixture of rage and wounded pain. He squeezed her wrist. A terrified Tori dropped the shard.

"Oh, Brandon, I'm sorry," she pleaded.

Brandon gripped her tighter.

"Oh, Brandon," Tori continued as he surged upward.

Brandon smashed through floor after floor of the barn, snapping his mother's bones. He flew higher and higher into the night sky, over the farmland below. His mother's helpless and broken body in his arms. She looked up at her son, who looked at her one last time before he dropped her.

As Tori fell from the sky, he spotted a passenger plane coming toward him. As he was about to crash into it, the plane suddenly stopped in midair. The pilots inside were unable to control it. Then, it flew higher and higher into space before—BOOM! The plane exploded into pieces. Everyone on board—pilots and passengers—were all killed in front of Brandon's now shocked and horrified eyes.

A humanoid figure descended in front of him. He wore what appeared to be violet armor with gold shoulder and torso plates, white wrist and ankle bands with a violet sphere on each, and a horned helmet with a violet skull. The figure's arms, legs and tail were pink, while his head and neck were lilac. The figure applauded him.

"Bravo, young man," he said. "Murder and patricide, and you have performed both with flying colors. I see a bright future in the Frieza Force for you, boy."

"Who…" Brandon gulped. "Who are you?"

"I am he who is called Frieza," the figure introduced, presenting himself. "And I have come from afar after sensing your high power levels. Why, I believe they surpass even the Saiyans on Planet Vegeta."

Well, this seems unexpected. In another universe, by this time, Frieza, the self-proclaimed Emperor of the Universe, had already destroyed Planet Vegeta, attempted to make a wish for immortality on Planet Namek, fought the strongest fighter on Earth and lost to him, met his end at the hands of the Prince of Saiyans' son, was wished back to life with the help of Earth's Dragon Balls, reached a shimmering new form while enacting revenge, and met his second end, this time, at the hands of said strongest fighter on Earth. However, in this universe, he had yet to do any of that, and had already conquered many planets before sensing Brandon's power. It was Frieza's choice that created a new universe.

But in Brandon's universe, he destroyed the plane himself, as well as crash land it on the Breyer farm to destroy any evidence of the ship he was brought to Earth in, making it look like an accident.

"But why did you destroy the plane and not me?" Brandon asked.

Frieza chuckled. "Because, my boy," he replied, "you are not quite ready to begin taking the world. Perhaps after a few years of training with me, then maybe you will be." He then held out his hand. "Come, Brandon. Your future in the Frieza Force begins here. What do you say?"

After thinking considerately, Brandon took the offer. With that, Frieza brought him to his domed ship, where the new story of his life began.

And this is where our story begins…

The next day, Tori's broken and lifeless body was found inside the remains of the Breyer family farm, by her sister, Merilee McNichol, who worked at Brandon's school as counselor.

Reports all over Brightburn, Kansas, deduce that Brandon had perished when the farm was destroyed. The surviving local authorities were unable to find him to prove or disprove whether Brandon was still alive or not.

The police were also able to find Kyle's headless body inside the forest. They believed that a bear might have attacked him and ripped his head before mutilating it and breaking his skull to pieces.

Caitlyn, who was distraught after the police were able to find her mother's mutilated corpse, believed that Tori had killed her, then herself, in a murder-suicide as revenge for her calling Brandon a menace. She then decided to have the metal from Brandon's ship be reforged into a prosthetic right hand for her, after Brandon broke her organic one.

Ms. Espenschied, the school teacher, was able to buy the belief that Brandon had died, and informed her class about it. Many of the kids who bullied him, including Fauxhawk and Royce, had to share their condolences to Merilee, and regretted ever bullying him.

Little did anyone in Brightburn know that Brandon was still alive, out in space, as a member of the Frieza Force.
