Okay, here we go with chapter 14! Ahhh, we made it! As always, I don't own Rising of the Shield Hero only my OCs and various plot divergent shenanigans, mwa ha ha ha-! We finally get a couple of answers this chapter~!
Please review and comment, I really appreciate it.
Also, shout out to those that corrected a misunderstanding I had concerning Heroes and their level up oddities- it really helped!
Now, are we ready to indulge in some good feels and chaos? Yes? Good!
Recap of last chapter…
"Hi there, you want some dinner?" She offers.
The violet-eyed Filolial Queen blinks at Hazel, surprise flickering across her face.
"Aren't you going to ask me who I am?"
"Why would I be stereotypical like that?" Hazel counters playfully.
"Most would." The stranger points out.
"I'm not most people." She shrugs.
"… I can see that."
"But, in answer to your earlier question, heavy discussions that alter our view of the world are strictly conducted outside of mealtimes." Hazel says decisively.
"Is that so?"
Hazel nods firmly.
"Mealtime is mealtime." She says seriously.
"… I can respect that." Their surprise guest decides, seating herself elegantly.
"Stew?" Hazel offers.
"Please."
…
Hazel yawns as the warm feeling from eating your fill makes her sleepier than she probably should be in front of someone she doesn't know, but eh. Their surprise guest had been polite, though a bit sad by the smaller portions. But when there's a Dragon, Filolial, four growing Demi-human kids, Hazel and Rong to feed, there simply isn't going to be a lot of left overs. Despite the food shortage, everyone had a good time teasing each other and talking about the journey so far. Their guest sets her spoon down with a final sounding 'clink', drawing the attention of the Belladonnas.
"The meal was satisfactory, Hero."
Hazel raises her eyebrows but nods in thanks.
"Good to hear! So, I'm guessing we should introduce ourselves now… As you guessed, I'm a Hero. Specifically, the Gauntlet Hero, Hazel Ilmatar. Nice to meet you..?" She trails off expectantly.
"Fitoria, Queen of Filolials."
A series of gasps from the Demi-humans and Rong clue in Hazel, Kai and Meili that Fitoria is probably a big deal. Hazel smiles and holds out her hand to Fitoria.
"Nice to meet you, Fitoria-san!"
Fitoria stills then her expression softens as she carefully shakes Hazel's hand.
"The pleasure is mine." The Filolial Queen tells Hazel.
Hazel shrugs and grins.
"So, Fitoria-san, why'd you come and see us?" She asks lightly.
Fitoria considers her for a long moment before speaking.
"… it has been nearly a thousand years since your predecessor walked this world, Hazel. The reappearance of the Gauntlet Hero is a notable event, especially considering the Waves and summoning of the four Cardinal Heroes."
Hazel nods thoughtfully.
"Okay, I'll give you that one. But are you here to spectate or something else..?"
Fitoria tilts her head, bird-like, as she observes Hazel.
"I wished to meet you and see what manner of person you are. The other heroes… have not been inspiring much hope nor working together. One is an idiotic womanizer, another a loner, one a criminal and the last a blind child who thinks himself a just hero. And yet… you have worked with them all and ended a battle between the Shield and Spear Heroes. You quelled the Wave in Siltvelt without aid aside from your party only to go assist Melromarc with their own Wave despite how they posted a bounty on your head."
Hazel blinks as she leans back on her log.
"Well, I can be angry about something I can't change or I can look past it and do my job. It's not like every person in Melromarc wants me clapped in irons, so why waste my energy on something unimportant?" Hazel shrugs.
Many members of the Belladonnas along with Fitoria are disconcerted by the Gauntlet Hero's pragmatic take on her situation.
"Master, you're weird." Gale states.
The rest of the Belladonnas nod in agreement aside from Meili and Kai. Hazel sweat drops.
"Oi, I'm not that weird… And don't call me master! Hazel will do!" She protests, pointing at Gale sternly.
Gale snorts, his striped tail lashing.
"No, you're weird- who else wouldn't want revenge?!" He snaps, gold eyes glaring daggers.
Hazel rolls her eyes.
"Revenge is A, not something I want to waste my energy on. B, not productive long term. C, dubious payout. And D, an unhealthy mindset not conductive for staying alive. I might be odd, but I would rather be odd than vengeance obsessed. Not to mention I believe in karma."
Hazel bares her teeth in a ferocious smirk.
"What comes around goes around. Do a good deed? You get a good deed in return. Do a bad deed? You get bad luck and backstabbing."
Gale gapes at her while Abelia, Kassia and Sher stare at her in confusion. Rong frowns thoughtfully at the unusual philosophy and Fitoria nods slowly in comprehension, not finding it that farfetched. Kai and Meili don't really care considering they're licking the bottom of the soup pot for the last dregs of the stew.
"Hazel. What do you intend to do now?" Fitoria asks her.
Hazel raises her eyebrows.
"Well, I know I don't exactly have the option to opt out of the Waves, so I'll be dealing with those as they happen. Probably travel more and try to find more Hourglasses." She shrugs.
Fitoria hums before speaking.
"I see. If I may make a suggestion- avoid Faubrey."
Rong stiffens while Hazel frowns in confusion.
"Uh, why..?"
"You are not ready." Fitoria tells her simply.
Hazel sweat drops at Fitoria's matter-of-fact tone.
"Ouch, Fitoria-san. Then where would you suggest going?" Hazel inquires, tilting her head.
Fitoria considers the question carefully before speaking.
"South-east of here there is a mountain range that acts as a natural barrier between Melromarc and Shieldfreeden. There are many monsters there that you will find beneficial, assuming you survive the trip."
"Ooh, I've heard of that place! Don't they have hot springs?!" Kassia interrupts, tails twitching in excitement.
Hazel's eyes take on a happy gleam.
"Hot springs?! Oh, heck yes!" She whoops.
Fitoria blinks at the growing enthusiasm. Rong sighs while Sher leans towards Abelia and Gale.
"What are hot springs?" She mutters to them.
They shrug, clueless. Fitoria stands to depart, smoothing her dress of wrinkles.
"I must leave now." She informs the Belladonnas.
Hazel snaps out of her hot springs daydreams as Fitoria turns to go.
"AH! Fitoria-san, I have two questions before you leave!" She calls out.
Fitoria pauses, quirking her eyebrows.
"… Ask."
Hazel takes a deep breathe to steady herself.
"Do you know how to remove the 'you must teleport away from the other Heroes outside of the Waves' gimmick the Knokene and Rysty have? Because they've flung us to other countries and it's a bit irritating to not be able to talk to the other Heroes. Or being spontaneously teleported because I happen to run into one of them at a market."
Fitoria blinks slowly as she processes Hazel's rant before walking over and grabbing Hazel's right arm and narrows her eyes at Rysty. Abruptly Fitoria releases Hazel's arm and stares at Hazel with an odd expression.
"…"
"What? Is it bad? Are they cursed-?" Hazel starts to panic but falls silent when Fitoria holds up an imperious hand.
"I understand the situation and the… circumstances behind this 'gimmick' as you called it. Unfortunately, it is not easily fixed due to the intent governing it."
Rong quirks her eyebrow.
"Intent, Fitoria-sama?"
Fitoria nods, hands clasped before her.
"The gimmick is, for lack of better words, a protection protocol until the current wielder fulfills certain requirements. The purpose behind it was to ensure the Gauntlet Hero would not die at the hands of the Cardinal Heroes. Again."
Dead silence fills the clearing as the last part of Fitoria's explanation processes; then bedlam ensues.
"No one's killing Mommy!" Kai wails, tears glistening in his eyes.
"I'll eat them and use their bones as toothpicks!" Meili seethes, smoke slipping out of her mouth.
"Like hell they are!" Sher snarls.
"Master pummeled Motoyasu- she can take them!" Kassia declares, folding her arms.
"B-But th-there are f-four of them..!" Abelia stutters.
"Naofumi won't work with them. He doesn't trust the other three Heroes." Rong muses.
"I doubt they can take her…" Gale mutters under his breathe.
"Oi! I'm not dying that easily!" Hazel squawks, pouting.
The rest of the Belladonnas settle down reluctantly, with Fitoria looking on. Hazel groans before looking at the Filolial Queen.
"What are the requirements for getting rid of the gimmick?" Hazel asks.
Fitoria huffs softly before answering.
"You must fight in five Waves, gain a 'Blessed' series and master it before they will remove the fail-safe."
Hazel blinks in surprise.
"Waves? Okay, nothing new with that, we've already done two… But what is a Blessed series?"
Fitoria smiles at Hazel and it almost looks impish.
"You will have to discover that for yourself. Thank you for the stew." The Filolial Queen informs her.
Hazel's eyes widen in surprise.
"Oi-!" She starts to protest but Fitoria already vanished into the night.
Hazel moans, pulling on her hair.
"What the hell is a Blessed series?!" She yells at the sky.
…
After much grumbling (mostly from Hazel), the Belladonnas set out again, this time with a destination in mind.
"I've heard their hot springs are amazing for skin and treating injuries!" Kassia hums, her tail lashing back and forth.
"But what's a hot spring?" Gale demands, glaring at Kassia.
"A hot spring is a pool of water that is heated by lava near the Earth's surface." Rong explains.
"They're really nice, especially in the winter!" Hazel adds.
"You can watch the snow fall and have a nice soak in the open air." She reminisces.
"Y-You're really e-excited about th-them…" Abelia stammers.
Hazel nods, beaming.
"Yup! I've haven't seen one in about a year- there are some in my home country too, as a matter of fact!"
"Hopefully the passes are open for travel." Sher comments from the front of the wagon.
"Why, are they snowed in this time of year?" Hazel asks.
Sher shakes her head.
"No… monsters are a bigger concern." She replies.
"Spring is when the monsters spawned in the last six months start becoming a menace- it takes time for them to level up enough to be a threat." Rong adds.
"Hmph! Then we shall roast them on a spit and devour their bones!" Meili proclaims.
"Oooh! I hope they taste good!" Kai cheers, waving his wings.
"Kai! Careful!" Sher barks, dodging.
"Oops!" Kai laughs.
Hazel chuckles, reaching out and patting Kai's head.
"Just be more careful, yeah?"
"Okay Mommy!" Kai chirps, trotting along at a rapid pace.
Hazel shares a fond eyeroll with Sher as she settles back on the bench.
"So, what kinds of monsters do we have to worry about?" She asks.
"For lower-level monsters, balloons, swelshi, slimes, mushes and pixies are the norm. Higher level monsters to keep an eye out for are griffins, trolls, alicorns and steam imps." Rong answers.
Hazel frowns.
"Swelshi? Alicorns? Trolls? Pixies? Steam imps? What the heck are those?"
"Swelshi are water monsters that look similar to salamanders but have a blue appearance- they prefer cold temperatures and like mountain streams." Sher replies, steering Kai around a group of merchants.
"They also drown people and eat them." Gale adds.
Hazel sweat drops.
"Ooooookay, gruesome."
"Alicorns are an evolution of unicorns that fly and are a step away from a Kirin. They're territorial but generally will leave you alone so long as you stay out of their stomping grounds. Magicians love getting materials from them since they can boost your magic to crazy levels!" Kassia continues, starry-eyed at the idea.
"Someone sounds like a fan!" Hazel teases the younger girl.
Kassia huffs, folding her arms.
"Of course! Magic users dream of accessories boosted with alicorn hair, horn or feathers! It's a godsend!"
"Wait, how?" Sher cocks her head.
Kassia looks at the lion-demi human and smiles.
"Well, for one thing the most common boost is 'Mana-consumption lessened' meaning it takes less magic to cast spells! And by extension that leaves more magic to cast more spells and be more efficient!"
"Oooh, nice!" Hazel comments.
Kassia beams.
"Right?! But that's only the most common effect! Alicorn artifacts naturally boost Healing, Support, Light and Wind magics, but usually only two of the four can be picked. And, and, higher level spells in those schools of magic are easier to master while wearing those artifacts since you can 'tune in' to the correct amount of magic more quickly!"
"Sounds versatile and effective." Rong murmurs, considering.
"Un!" Kassia nods, grinning widely.
"T-That s-sounds he-helpful." Abelia offers softly.
"Hmph! Feathery horses should know their place!" Meili scoffs.
"Meili…" Sher groans, exasperated.
"I'm a dragon! Obviously, I'm better than those feather dusters with hooves!" Meili grumbles.
"Dragons are awesome," Gale comments.
Meili beams at him, puffing up with superiority.
"See? Gale understands!"
Hazel rolls her eyes and pats Meili's head.
"We get it, Meili. Dragons are cool- but so are other monsters." She reminds the dragoness.
Meili grumbles, pouting as Hazel glances at Rong.
"So, what the heck are pixies and steam imps? I have a general idea of what a troll is but the rest is confusing."
Rong sighs before speaking.
"Pixies are troublemakers- small, swift and capable of flight, they are considered pests. It's only when they are in swarms that Pixies are a true threat. They pick a single target before attacking and overwhelm them with sheer numbers and hexes."
Abelia nods.
"Th-they're very c-curious a-and like s-sweet th-things…"
Hazel hums, considering the new information with a small frown.
"So, to sum up. They like sweet things and pranking people but aren't really a problem unless there is a lot of them?"
Rong and Abelia affirm Hazel's conclusion with nods or 'uh huhs'. Hazel sighs with relief.
"Well, if we need to distract them then I guess we can throw a bunch of sweets at them." She muses aloud.
"What a waste!" Meili whines.
"Our sweets!" Kai echoes.
Hazel deadpans.
"I would rather give up sweets then lose any of you." She tells the glutinous pair.
They grumble but settle down as Hazel continues the interrogation.
"And steam imps?"
Rong winces, catching the group's attention.
"They are very dangerous and difficult to counter. Steam imps gather around hot springs and geysers- some magicians speculate they spawn from them. Physically they are about a foot tall with pale white skin and small horns. Their hair is actually thick steam and they wear blue shorts. If you see one imp, there will always be at least three more nearby."
"Steam imps live in tribes of twenty to thirty and 'claim' a hot spring as theirs. You have to pay to use a hot spring that steam imps are guarding and if you don't- well, they boil you alive." Sher adds grimly.
Hazel, Gale, Abelia and Kassia wince while Meili yawns with boredom. Rong nods, continuing where Sher left off.
"What makes them truly dangerous is they use a unique combination of Water and Fire magic in tandem to create steam to scald their enemies."
"Ouch." Kassia winces.
"Yikes." Mutters Hazel.
"W-We don't h-have to f-fight th-them r-right?" Abelia stammers.
The group looks at Hazel, who frowns.
"We'll avoid it if we can but no promises beyond that." She tells Abelia.
Abelia droops but nods sadly. They settle back into their normal routine of chatting and sharing stories as they travel further and further, slowly ascending into the mountain range. It takes three days before Kai spots the first true mountains, to the group's delight. Another day of travel brings them to the pass- and the monsters that inhabit the area.
"Gah!" Kai squawks, barely turning the wagon enough to avoid a boulder.
"Shit! Troll!" Sher yells.
A lumbering humanoid form stomps towards them, eight feet tall and stony skin giving an imposing look. Hazel leaps out of the carriage, Gale and Rong quickly following suit while Sher gets Kai out of the harness. Meili folds her arms, standing between the troll and Abelia and Kassia behind her.
"So, just a thought, I hold it still and the kiddos get a chance to practice attacking it?" Hazel calls to Rong as Rysty transforms.
Rong nods, humming, as she distracts the monster with a lightning blast.
"They do need experience- very well, we shall use your plan."
Hazel grins widely.
"Listen up, kiddos! I'm gonna restrain it, you all take turns attacking the troll! Got it?!" She bellows, dodging a slow punch.
"HAI!" They all chorus together.
"Get ready!" Hazel warns before starting her assault.
The chains lash out, grappling the arms of the troll and Hazel quickly races around a broad oak as she tightens the bindings. Grunting angrily, the troll heaves but Hazel is ready, bracing herself against the trunk and resisting the pull with a growl of her own.
"NOW!" She bellows.
Gale moves in, shield up and hacks at the troll's side with his sword. Kassia lifts her wand muttering a spell and a fireball condenses on the tip of the wand.
"Gale, move!" Sher yells, darting in to yank him to the side.
"Wah-?!" He starts to snarl only to balk as Kassia's fireball blasts the troll.
"Communicate, kiddos!" Hazel yells, wrenching the troll off balance.
"F-First Guard!" Abelia chants, directing the magic at Sher and Gale.
Gale scowls at the boost but hoists his shield into position. Sher nods when she sees he is ready before calling to Kassia and Abelia.
"Abelia! When Kassia is ready give a signal! Gale and I will get out of the way then put pressure on the troll between spells!" Sher orders.
"Hai!" The budding mages yell.
"Let's go!" Sher yells.
She steps in first, laying a vicious strike to the troll's leg. Bellowing, the troll tries to kick them but Gale deflects the blow with his shield, grunting with effort. Sher takes the opportunity to stab at the troll's face but misses. Gale quickly swipes at the nearest leg of the troll, cutting the tendons near the knee.
"S-Spell!" Abelia yells.
Moving quickly, Gale and Sher break off, leaving the troll an open target. Kassia grins darkly at the troll as she finishes creating another fireball.
"Faust Fireball!" She barks.
The fireball strikes the troll's face, making it stumble back. Hazel capitalizes on the loss of balance to yank it onto it's back. Gale charges in first this time, stabbing the troll with a fierce yell. Sher follows up with a strike to the troll's chest. Snarling, the troll thrashes but Abelia quickly points at the troll and yells a spell.
"Faust Speed Down!"
The troll's movements slow suddenly and Sher wastes no time hacking away at the troll's thick hide. Gale learns quickly to let Sher do most of the damage first before hacking at the new weak spots. Kassia quickly approaches and aims at the troll's head again.
"Faust Fireball!"
The third time is the charm as the fireball blasts the troll's head off, making the older Belladonna's sigh in relief.

The notifications of everyone leveling up perks the mood of the group and the younger members all grin at each other. Hazel smiles as she retracts the chains, rolling her shoulders.
"Good job everyone! You did well and worked together! Still need to work on coordinating but it's a solid start. Now, let's get this ugly lump butchered then move on." Hazel orders.
It doesn't take long for the Belladonnas to cut the troll apart and sort out what they can sell or just dispose of. Hazel gets a bit of the troll's teeth, bones, skin and muscles for Rysty and Knokene. The gauntlets happily chow down, processing the new materials.
[Stone Troll Bone Gauntlets: +15 Defense, +7 Magical Defense]
[Stone Troll Fang Gauntlets: +5 Attack, Skill: Stone to Dust (Locked)]
[Stone Troll Meat Gauntlets: +3 Cooking, Damage Reduction (Medium)]
[Stone Troll Leather Gauntlets: +10 Defense, Earth Resistance (High), Bonus Skill- Tremor Sense]
Hazel quirks her eyebrows, specifically at Damage Reduction and the Earth Resistance skills.
Those will be useful… She muses.
While Hazel ponders, Rong stands next to Abelia who fidgets awkwardly. The older woman is imposing and the shy Deer demi-human isn't certain of how to act around her. Eventually Rong breaks the silence.
"You did not use your bow."
Abelia flinches, ducking her head.
"I'm sorry-!" She whispers, tremors showing in her hands.
Rong is taken aback by Abelia's behavior, concealing a concerned frown. She coughs slightly before speaking.
"No- you made a good tactical decision, Abelia." Rong clarifies.
Abelia's ears perk up and she shyly looks up at Rong, confused.
"I-I d-did?" She stammers.
Rong nods.
"Yes. An arrow could have hit Sher or Gale since they were so close to the troll. But since you chose to use magic you were more precise and did not miss." She explains.
Abelia's face flushes at the praise, drawing Kassia's attention.
"Abelia? Are you alright?! You look like you're burning up!" The older girl asks worriedly.
"I-I-I'm f-fi-fine! Gr-great!" Abelia squeaks, quickly turning away from both Rong and Kassia.
Kassia frowns, unconvinced.
"Are you sure?"
Abelia nods frantically, face still hot.
"Let us get ready to go- everyone seems to have finished with the troll." Rong intercedes, distracting the pair.
Abelia gratefully seizes the excuse, muttering an 'excuse me' before fleeing to the wagon. Kassia narrows her eyes at Rong, tail bristling.
"Why was Abelia so nervous?! Did you say something-!" Kassia starts hotly.
Rong holds in a sigh.
"I told her she did well and made admirable use of her spells." She explains patiently.
Kassia blinks, off kilter by the admission.
'Wha- really? Why would you-?"
"Because she needs reassurance more than you or Gale. She is timid and unsure. Confidence is not something that comes easily to her." Rong tells Kassia.
Kassia frowns but not as severely as before.
"… Fine. I'll believe you- for now." She says begrudgingly.
"What's the hold up, slowpokes?!" Hazel yells, poking her head out of the wagon.
Kassia turns and smiles at Hazel, waving.
"Sorry, we'll be right over!" She calls.
"Well, come on then! If we're lucky it's hot springs tonight!" Hazel informs them, grinning widely.
Rong cannot help but snort, meandering slowly towards the wagon. Kassia keeps pace with the older woman, tension not completely dissipated between them. As they make their way over to the Belladonnas, Rong lets a small smile form on her face.
What a chaotic bunch we are.
…
The smell of sulfur fills the air, making most of the party gag on the scent. Hazel beams, bouncing agitatedly in her seat as Kai labors up the (according to their map) final incline to their destination.
"Yup, we're close! Finally! Man have I been itching to do this for ages-!" Hazel chatters.
Gale and Kassia are sickly green, covering their noses with their hands in a vague attempt to ward off the smell. Abelia, Rong and Sher all use cloth masks to shield their poor noses. Meili shares Hazel's excitement, jittering impatiently in her seat as the scent grows stronger.
"I hope these 'hot springs' live up to their reputation!" Meili comments, peeking past Sher's back.
"They should!" Sher calls back as Kai hauls them happily around the last bend.
"Kurakakura Hot Springs are renowned as the best onsen in both Melromarc and Shieldfreeden -!"
"Uh, Sissy? Why is it burned?" Kai asks, interrupting Sher's sales pitch.
Sher pauses and stares. And stares. She blinks, rubs her eyes and pinches herself before giving up on denying reality.
Kurakakura Hot Springs, their long-awaited peaceful retreat, is a sooty ruin of its former glory. Anime tears stream from Sher's eyes at the travesty.
"Gods, whyyyyyyyyyyyy!" Sher moans.
""cause gods are assholes." Hazel responds, deadpanning at the scene before them.
"… so, do we turn around..?" Kassia asks, flinching at the madness.
Hazel snorts.
"Nope! We came too far to leave now!" She declares, jumping out of the wagon.
"Now let's see who ruined our hot springs retreat before it even started!"
Hazel bares her teeth menacingly as she stalks towards the desecrated hot springs. The rest of the Belladonna's quickly follow Hazel into this newest mess, hoping it won't be horrible.
And that's a wrap!
Holy moly this one was really hard to get onto the page- it took forever to figure out what angle to take with this arc because Hazel and the Belladonnas won't be anywhere near the other heroes for a WHILE. So- we get monster mayhem! Mwa hahahahahahahaha! I get to make up monsters~!
To my loyal readers, new and old, I do not give up on stories- it may take me ages but I do continue! Please be patient with me, my muse likes to run off at horrible times. That said, do review and comment! It motivates me to keep writing and continue onwards.
And, without a further ado, an omake!
Naofumi stares at Filo, who looks like a giant fuzzball. A familiar fuzzball. Except white and pink instead of gold. And female. He shares a glance with Raphtalia and pinches the bridge of his nose.
"What the actual hell?! I'm not Hazel! What's next, you transform into a naked little kid?!" He rants.
Filo tilts her head cutely at him, cooing.
Naofumi scowls but can admit to himself that if Filo has even half the combat potential Kai showed, then he can maybe endure the insanity of raising a royal Filolial. Maybe.
… The fluffiness factor has nothing to do with it at all. Nope. None.
Filo belches and Naofumi glowers before going to bed.
Not two days later in the Beloukas' tent, Naofumi indulges in slamming his head against the wall when Filo transforms into a blond girl with wings, completely naked.
"The gods-!" *Slam*
[Blunt Force Damage negated.]
"Fucking-!" *Slam*
[Blunt Force Damage negated.]
"Hate me!" *SLAM*
[Blunt Force Damage negated.]
"You shut up!"
And that's a wrap and a funny scene that popped into my head! Let me know what you think- should I do more like these or more along the lines of the Duel omake? Make your voice heard!
Until next time, please be safe and peace out!
