"Welcome to Beanie's Burgers And Bean Barn, can I take your order?" The girl behind the counter wore a tired smile and a hat covered in beans.
"Yeah, uh, can I get a number 6 with large bean fries?"
"Would you like bean fries with that?" She asked.
"… yes."
"And would you like an apple pie for 2 dollars more?"
"Does it have beans in it?"
She blinked "I genuinely do not know."
"No just the meal."
"And the fries?"
"And the fries."
"That's 12.58 please."
The next time we saw the girl was when she was walking home from her shift. Her headphones were in her ears blasting Billie Eilish and she lugged around a huge backpack.
She stopped from her walk only when she heard a female voice:
"Find Marc Spector."
She took the ear bud out of her ear "Hello?"
"Find Marc Spector."
"Is anyone there?"
Silence. She shrugged and placed the headphone back on. "Weird."
At home, she collapsed on the couch in full view of her plump father in his laze-boy.
"Tough day at work, love?" He asked.
"It's always a tough day." She answered.
"Aye. Mum's made chili if you'd like supper."
The girl turned over on the couch "I really can't eat beans right now. Besides, it won't hurt to skip a meal. Might actually be good."
"Now look here, just because you got our genes don't mean you can go skipping food to lose weight." Her father told her.
"Well I don't want chili so—"
"Kathy!" Her dad began to yell.
"No, Dad don't call for Mom."
"Kathy!"
"What?" The call came from the kitchen.
"Lena is talking poorly about her body again!"
"Oh, great." The girl sighed.
A round woman covered in sauce came into the living room. "Paulena Dawn Peters, did you call yourself fat?"
"No, Mom."
"Because that's a lie."
"I know, Mom."
Actually, it wasn't a complete lie. Everyone in the family was chubbier, that's true. Lena herself was a US size 22. Which isn't skinny but isn't necessarily terrible either.
"You are pretty!" Her mom smiled.
"I know, Mom."
"Alright. Now that we've got that settled, Lena, if you don't want any chili you can make yourself a grilled cheese."
"Okay. I will. Thanks, Mom."
