A/N - So here's another story. I'm kinda burned out on my other story "Wings of Freedom" so I'm hoping doing this little sort series will help get my creative juices flowing again.
And this will be a short series by the way. This is not some long drawn out project. Expect lots of time jumps or for Sora to just wreck the cannon pacing of the story.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy, and Happy Reading.
[UPDATE] - I do not own Destiny, Kingdom Hearts or any Disney titles. This is a work of fanfiction.
King of the Sky
Chapter I
The Day Destiny Changed
All was calm and peaceful as wind blew in a vast and endless void of water and sky.
A Beautiful and relaxing landscape that stood in stark contrast to the horrifying hollows of the Hive, that this world's newest occupant had just narrowly escaped.
Said new occupant, now gazed around at his new environment with a glowing blue, diamond shaped eye, as he floated up from the waters and spun the back end of his white shell.
The Ghost took all of thirty seconds to take in his surroundings. An eternity for an artificial being such as a Ghost, before giving a hum "welp" he said with a young voice while popping the P "I guess I'll just take a look around" he said and proceeded to hum a happy tune as he started floating along and scanning the waters.
Any other Ghost, Guardian-less or otherwise, would probably be freaking out or brimming with questions right about now, having somehow survived their hair brained idea to search for their Guardian in the middle of a battle between the Hive and the Vex, only to get sucked through a messed up rift caused by a Hive and Vex portal, forming over one another.
But not this Ghost.
No, it would seam that nothing could keep this childish little light down, even after three hundred years of searching. It all just seamed to bounce right off the nameless Ghost who just fallowed his heart.
But outside appearances weren't always truthful, and even this happy-go-lucky Ghost, was starting to feel the strain of his three centuries of searching. Surviving through the Dark Age, watching so many other Ghosts find their chosen one. But he had marched through it all with a metaphorical smile on his face, or at least what passed for one on a Ghost, and this world would be no different if he had anything to say about it.
A little unease still wormed it's way under his shall though as he turned his attention from his scanning to the world around him "I've never felt more far away from the Traveler then here in whatever world this is, and yet…I have never felt so close to the Light" he thought aloud, and indeed, in spite of being so far from the Traveler as to almost be cut off, he felt light permeating this entire world, with only a few broken specks of Darkness, far off in the distance. Subdued by the unrelenting Light.
The Ghost brushed that thought aside though, as he resumed his humming and moved on.
The beautiful scenery, began to feel a little monotonous though, as the Ghost continued to search for what was starting to feel like hours.
As beautiful as this world was, the Ghost was not keen on being trapped here with nothing to do for, who knows how long.
His curiosity spiked though, as he spotted something glittering out in the distance and decided to take a look "ooh" he droned in fascination at the collection a glowing particles, pulsing in and out of the shape of a star "what are you?" he thought aloud.
"I could ask you the same thing" the star suddenly responded with a feminine voice and the Ghost gave a digitized yelp as he "hopped" back "your…alive?" the Ghost asked innocently. His voice cracking with digital noise.
The star hummed in though for a second "not really…as far as I know, everyone here is long dead" she answered, much to the Ghost's confusion "what do you mean? You don't sound dead" the childish Ghost asked and the star chuckled a little at him "you poor thing. You don't know where we are do you?" she said with sympathy and the Ghost simply shook his shell in the negative "little one, this is the Final World" she said.
The Ghost just tilted his shell to the side in innocent confusion "Final World? What does that mean?" he asked "this is the place where people's Hearts go, when they die but aren't yet ready to move on. I guess you could think of it like limbo. It's the last stop before Kingdom Hearts" the star explained and the Ghost's shell briefly expanded, like someone's eye widening "so, everyone here is dead?" he asked before scanning the star out of habit, but finding she wasn't his Guardian.
The star hummed thoughtfully again "most everyone, but about a year ago, or what to me felt like a year, someone came here who hadn't quite died yet. He had visited this place a few times before in his sleep, since the realm of dreams is connected to this place, but he hadn't come all the way over yet, until last year" she started "it's a little hard to tell. Time doesn't always move the same in here. But he was the first person I'd ever seen come here with a physical body. Well until you" she finished.
The Ghost hummed as he took in the information "what happened to him?" he asked and the star seamed to become sad "he…well I think he broke the world's rules. I'm not sure what he did but he was punished for it and trapped here" she said sadly and the Ghost mirrored her feelings "hay, maybe you could go talk to him. He's been alone for so long. Probably longer given how time works here. I would, but the world just pushes us all away from him. I guess as part of his punishment…but you're still alive though, so maybe it could work" she asked.
The Ghost didn't even hesitate before answering "ok!" in such a chipper tone that his digital voice chimed like a high pitched bell.
The Ghost began floating away to find this person, but stopped suddenly and quickly flew back "oh, um…you wouldn't happen to know which way he is would you. Oh! And I never caught your name" he said and the star laughed a little "it's ok, just turn around and go straight. You can't miss him. As for my name, I forgot it long ago" she answered and the Ghost's sides sagged in sadness a little "oh, I'm sorry about that…but hay, I don't have a name yet ether" he said, finishing with a chipper note.
The star just laughed some more "it's alright, and thanks for spending some time with me. It was nice to talk with someone" she replied and the Ghost nodded "ok, thanks for the directions, and good luck with whatever unfinished business you have" he called back jovially as he flew off.
The star laughed a little more as the Ghost left "what a nice little…whatever he was. He's just like that boy. Hopefully they'll hit it off" she said to herself.
Meanwhile, the Ghost was speeding along happily, with little concerns that he might run in to anything. After all, what was there to run into.
An invisible wall apparently, as he learned all to painfully, when he saw his objective in the distance and picked up speed, only to be stopped abruptly with a resounding clang!
"Ow" the Ghost moaned as he slid down the barrier, but quickly righted himself.
The Ghost gave a hum as he tapped against the barrier a few times before scanning it. This was defiantly a powerful barrier. Likely impossible for any mortal being to breach.
But fortunately, Ghosts were paracausal, meaning his Traveler given authority, overruled whatever the world decreed.
And so, the Ghost pulsed his Light, letting it rewrite the laws of the universe and letting him Transmat through the barrier.
One would think the ability to rewrite the universe would weigh heavily on one's conscience, but not this Ghost.
Well really any Ghost for that matter, but this one in particular was content to simply fallow his heart, regardless of where it lead him. And so he continued on, as he approached what he now identified as a teenaged boy, with very spiky hair, wearing a crown and chain necklace, large yellow shoes, and a black and red hoodie.
"Hi! It's nice to meet you!" he called out as he got closer.
No response came.
"Um, hello!?" he called out again, but the boy didn't so much as flinch and the Ghost slowed in his approach until he got a good look at the boy "oh no" he said sadly as he watched the boy walking aimlessly, with listless eyes that seamed almost devoid off any and all light.
It may not look it, with the way he acts, but the Ghost had seen this kind of trauma before. He had seen it too many time during the Dark Age.
This poor boy had been isolated from all contact for far too long, and judging from the rips and tears in his clothing, had been beaten to a pulp and only survived by shear force of will.
Now he was broken. The only semblance of life left was the tight grip he held, on the charm in his right hand.
The Ghost's shell sagged a little as he trailed behind the slowly walking boy, who seamed oblivious to all of his attempts to get his attention, even when he bumped into the boy's face.
"Oh, there has to be something I can do!" the Ghost said with determination as he refused to give up. Eventually it occurred to the Ghost to try scanning him to see if there was anything he could do that way.
And he was shocked to find out there was.
"It can't be…" he trailed off in disbelief as he hung there for a moment in shock. He quickly shook it off though and caught back up with the boy "how?…you're not dead. How are you my Guardian?" he asked no one in particular, as he floated behind the unresponsive boy.
By all accounts the boy was still very much alive, but the Ghost's sensors didn't lie. The boy was somehow alive and dead at the same time. Perhaps that was part of whatever punishment he had been given. The world considered him dead but refused to let him move on or go back, and now, for the first time in centuries, the Ghost was left with a moral dilemma he couldn't just decide on a whim.
Normally these kinds of decisions seamed trivial to the Ghost. He knew his moral compass enough to make these decisions ease, even if he didn't actually have to make them that often.
Now he had a choice though "I could resurrect you and free you from this place…but that will take away your memories" the Ghost thought aloud as he followed behind his chosen.
The Ghost pondered this for a good long while, until he finally floated in front of the boy's face and forced him to stop walking.
The Ghost looked into the boy's blue, lifeless eyes for a moment before finally making his decision "life like this isn't living…I'm sorry about your memories, but I can't leave you like this" he said.
The Ghost then expanded his shell and shined his Light upon the boy, before slamming himself back together again and there was a bright flash as the Ghost felt the world rage against the Boy's resurrection, before being forced to concede to the Light.
When the light died down, the Ghost watched nervously as the boy just stood there with his eyes closed, as if asleep.
The boy then opened his mouth and yawned as his lazy eyes cracked open and he stretched his limbs and he looked around with tied eyes before they landed on the Ghost "oh, hi there" he said before giving a wide smile that radiated innocence and joy.
The Ghost felt relief and joy fill him upon seeing that smile "hi, I'm so glad you're ok!" he replied with an equally jovial attitude.
The boy gave a confused look though "well, thanks, but was there something wrong with me?" he asked and the Ghost grew a little sheepish as guilt also filled him "well, yah…you see, you've been kind, sorta dead but also somehow not dead, for a long time. I don't really get all the details though" he reapplied.
The boy jumped back a little in shock "DEAD!? I was dead!?" he asked in distress and the Ghost cringed a little "well, yah, but you're ok now! I resurrected you" He quickly added and the boy sighed in relief before looking back to the Ghost "well thanks for saving me. My name is…" he trailed off and his eyes slowly widened as he realized he couldn't remember.
The Ghost looked down sadly at that "you can't remember can you? That my fault. I couldn't res you without taking your memories…I'm sorry about that" he admitted while looking down. Unable to look his guardian in the eye.
The boy just stood there as he pondered that for a moment and the Ghost was sure he was about to be rejected or something for taking his's Guardian's memories. So many worst cases scenarios ran through his processor as, for the first time in years he was having trouble staying positive, now that his ultimate goal was standing less then two feet in front of him.
Just as the Ghost began to spiral, a finger suddenly flicked the top of his face "ow, what was that fo-" the Ghost stopped mid sentence as he looked up, only to see his Guardian giving him the goofiest face he'd ever seen.
The Ghost couldn't help it. The next thing he knew, he was laughing at his Guardian's goofy face, which quickly turned into a real smile "that's much better. No sad faces if you run with me" he said while leaning in closer to the Ghost.
The Ghost got his laughter under control again as he looked to his Guardian "so wait, your not mad about your memories?" he asked and the boy hummed as he leaned back and put his his hands behind his head "honestly, no. I mean, you did it to save me, and also…" he trailed off as he looked up to the sky "…I get the feeling this isn't the first time something like this has happened to me" he said.
The Ghost was relieved by that answer. His Guardian suddenly hummed in curiosity though, and pulled his hand back to look at the charm he had been holding the whole time "what's this…" he tailed off as he studied the seashell charm and traced a finger over it.
The boy suddenly gasped though "Kairi!" he suddenly blurted out as memories of a red haired girl flashed though his mind and tears came to his eyes "what's wrong?" the Ghost asked with worry but the boy just smiled down at the charm before holding it to his heart and looking to the sky again "I remembered something. Not all of it, but I remember her" he said and the Ghost looked to the boy with astonishment. To his knowledge, only EXOs could remember any of their past lives, but that was ultimately irrelevant on account of them BEING EXOs, meaning their memories were scrambled anyway.
Then again, his Guardian's resurrection wasn't exactly normal to begin with.
The boy then looked contemplative for a moment as he watched the clouds move by "also, I think my name had something to do with the sky…Cloud?…No, that's not it…Sora…yah, that's it! My name is Sora!" he said happily as he looked back to the Ghost.
Sora's face then scrunched up though "oh I forgot to ask your name and…" he trailed of as he look at the Ghost from different angles "what are you anyway?" he asked and the Ghost chirped happily "I'm a Ghost! And it's my job to help you fight the Darkness!" he proclaimed like a kid imitating a superhero.
The Ghost got a little caught up in it though as he glossed over the finer details and missed the concerned look that passed over Sora's face at the word Darkness and he held a hand to his heart. The boy quickly shook himself free from those feelings though as the Ghost refocused on him "as for my name, I don't…actually have have one yet" he said, sounding almost embarrassed "some of us pick our own names, but most like me wait for our Guardians to pick one for us" he explained.
Sora frowned at that and crosses his arms "well it doesn't seam right not having a name…" he said before humming in thought and looking up with closed eyes as he racked his brain for whatever memories he could grasp, but the few names he came up with, he felt were already attach to others.
Something sparked in the recesses of his fractured mind though as he thought on the little Ghost and what he felt from him. The warmth. The Light. The feeling of companionship.
Sora looked to his Ghost, who was practically vibrating with anticipation "how about…Chirithy" he said with a smile.
The Ghost ceased his vibrating and pondered the name "Chirithy" he echoed the unfamiliar word and Sora began to feel a bit nervous "I don't know what it means but it just came to me…i-if you don't like it-"
"I love it!" The Ghost cut him off without thinking, and the now named Chirithy spun in place while his Guardian smiled.
But the boy then looked around at the endless waters surrounding them "ok, so what now?" he asked and the Ghost seamed to freeze up for a moment and take in his surroundings too "I…don't know" he admitted quickly and Sora looked to him with a raised eyebrow "ok I may have been a little lost when I ended up in this place and I have no idea how to get back out" he admitted.
Sora just stared at Chirithy for a moment before shrugging with a smile "ok" he said and started walking and the Ghost quickly moved to fallow "wait, where are you going?" he asked but Sora just shrugged "fallowing my heart. It's never lead me wrong before…or at least I don't think it has" he said as he walked a few more paces before stopping and placing a hand to his heat again as another memory came back to him "may your heart be your guiding key" he repeated the old line, though he couldn't remember where he'd heard it.
He then looked to the lucky charm in his hand again and smiled before stowing it away and looking back to his Ghost "besides, it's better then just standing around here" he said with a smile.
Chirithy felt a number of emotions run through him, chief among them being joy. He felt a sense of fulfillment at having found his chosen one, and incredible relief at how alike they were, unlike all of the warlords and mismatched partners that had been destined to fall, that he'd seen pop up in the Dark Age.
"Right, let's go" Chirithy replied happily as he fallowed Sora. Yes, he and his Guardian were going to get along swimmingly, and unbeknownst to them, they were also about to shatter a lot of people's perception on the Light and the Darkness.
Ancient houses would fall and be reborn and redeemed in their light.
Unbeatable armies would be brought to heel before their furry.
Cold and unbeatable logic would be made faulty by their shear willpower and optimism.
Even dark gods would be brought low by their blade.
Yes, legends were moments away from being born in they're wake, Oh Reader Mine.
