"Favorite movie?"
"Shawshank Redemption. Yours?"
"Sleepless in Seattle… I know, I know, but I'm a sucker for the 90's romcoms. Favorite color?"
"Now see, you'd think it would be red or blue, but I'm pretty partial to gold."
"I can see that, just because I wear a blue suit and red cape, doesn't mean either are my favorite color."
"Which would be…?"
"White."
"White?"
Kara smiled and leaned back on the palms of her hands as she stared up at the night sky. Her heels had been kicked off and placed carefully in the sand just behind her so she could wiggle her toes in the soft grains. The gentle rush of water as it crashed and rescinded along the shore offered an ambient background noise to the otherwise silent beach. After finishing dinner, neither was ready to call it an evening. So they had decided to take a walk, talking softly amongst themselves and eventually made their way to this bit of beach where they took up residence for the better part of an hour as they made the usual first date small talk.
"Well, it's kind of a cheat." Kara admitted. "White is technically not a color, but the amalgamation of all colors within the light spectrum." Kara bit her lip to repress a giggle at the face Diana made.
"If I have to choose a flavor of ice cream, then you, dear Kara, are obligated to choose a color." Diana intoned.
"Well, I mean it is a color?" Kara answered in question. "Maybe not necessarily in definition, but perceptively it is a color…I see it as a color, so it must be so."
"Hmmm… I suppose… though it seems like you are winning that argument based on descartian logic." Diana resigned. Upon seeing the look of confusion on Kara's face she explained. "Descartes philosophical proof of existence; cogito, ergo sum, 'I think, therefore I am.' You are basing your argument on white being a color because you perceive it exists as such, despite definitive proof."
Kara gaped at Diana in awe silently for a minute. "Um, what now? Did you just quote and then proceed to explain that I unknowingly used philosophy to argue in favor of what my favorite color is? And won?"
Diana turned her head slightly to eye Kara, shrugging dismissively, "I'd argue you lost, but I'm feeling generous tonight so I'll let it slide..."
Kara sat back as she absorbed that. "Huh. I mean I feel the need to debate this, but this is a first date and I'm trying to make a good impression."
Diana laughed. "You're doing fine so far."
Kara smiled and kicked up a bit of sand with her big toes contemplating as she continued, "I think if I were to accept the win and unashamedly pat myself on the back it would just come off as obscenely conceited…" Kara glanced over at Diana and smirked. "and that would be counterproductive to how I saw this date going."
"Oh?"
"Mhmm. See I have this whole idea in my head about how I'd thank you for the lovely evening, you'd tell me that I was charming and sweet and oh so very pretty…" Kara smiled cheesily and batted her eyes as Diana scoffed and shoved her playfully. Kara giggled, "Then you'd take me home, and I'd ask you if you'd be up for another date similar to this one." Kara lifted a hand gesturing to Diana, "to which you'd reply…"
Diana sighed and looked down, bunching her lips up into a tight smile as she tried to look perplexed at having to answer.
"Diana! You aren't going to leave me hanging are you?" Kara asked in consternation.
"I don't know, I very much enjoy making you squirm. And that technically wasn't asking me out."
"I may be Kryptonian, but my heart feels about ready to leap out of my chest in anxiety so…"
"So…" Diana leaned in slightly towards Kara, their shoulders brushing as Diana nudged her slightly to continue.
Kara rolled her eyes and gave out a huff of a laugh as she asked "Would you like to go out with me again?" Feeling very much like a braces wearing teenager and not at all like a flying, laser shooting, alien punching superhero.
"See, now was that so hard?" Diana asked and Kara could hear the enjoyment at the situation in her voice. It made her accent stand out more prominently and Kara was struck suddenly by how stunning she was.
"Still not an answer." Kara pouted.
"Yes."
"Yeah?"
"Now you're not sure?"
"No, no. Sorry, of course I'm sure. Why wouldn't I be? Great, you said - and I - yeah, that's great. So great. Great, great, great." Kara groaned with embarrassment when Diana couldn't help the snicker that came out, the dimple in her cheek prominently on display as she watched Kara digress into her adorable ramble.. "I'm such a mess. How do you bear it?"
Diana shook her head in disagreement. "You aren't a mess." She paused and smirked before acquiescing "Well maybe a little bit, but it's endearing and not at all off putting. I like you, Kara. You make me laugh. Do you know how rarely I laugh these days? Plus we've been talking for a few hours now and I still am not bored or tired. If anything I feel more energized. You're a beautiful person and I find you captivating."
"Well…" Kara looked down and dusted sand off the front of her dress. "Thank you. Aside from my sister and Lena, you are about the only person who thinks so."
Diana looked away, suddenly interested in the waves. "Lena is a good friend of yours?"
Kara smiled wistfully and nodded. "Yes, very…Well, was." She amended. She looked at Diana and gave a failed attempt at a half smile before explaining. "We hit a bit of a rough patch about a year and a half ago, but we've come a long way since then."
"She seems very fond of you." Diana acknowledged.
"I was her only friend when she first came to National City. And believe me it wasn't easy getting close to her. She was extremely guarded and had walls to protect her walls." Kara thought about those first few meetings and the trust that was gained during that time. "She still does around most people but she's learned how to let people into them over time… Sam and her daughter Ruby are like an extension of her now. Family, where hers failed her."
"You sound almost jealous."
Kara laughed humorlessly. "I was once a part of that at one time before my secret was exposed. I lied to her and broke her trust." Remorse overcame her features. "The walls are back up for me… and I don't deserve that status of family anymore. We both made mistakes, big ones, but in the end our relationship fractured because of me."
Diana placed her hand over Kara's and lightly squeezed it to offer comfort. "I'm sorry. Relationships are never easy no matter what form they come in. If I may though, as a third party observer and someone who has had her fair share of relationships throughout my many years here," She paused briefly allowing Kara a chance to meet her gaze and see the authenticity within her words. "It can be very difficult to fix a broken thing, but difficult doesn't mean impossible." Kara watched as Diana licked her lips and took in a slow methodical breath as she contemplated what she said next.
"You know I'm an art restorationist, yes?"
Kara nodded her head but her brow furrowed in confusion at the change of subject. Diana sat up straighter and faced Kara, still holding onto Kara's hand. She looked down at it, drawing it closer and lightly touched Kara's hand with her free one.
"Are you familiar with Japanese vases or the term Kintsugi?"
Kara shook her head silently.
Diana smiled softly. "Kintsugi, is the japanese art form of putting broken pieces of pottery back together again with gold." She traced a line where her finger and Kara's met and Kara felt a shiver erupt from her shoulders that she was quick to hide. "You see, they fill the cracks with a mixture of lacquer and gold dust to bind the broken pieces back together. This mixture is difficult to get right and takes years of training to master."
"It's built on the idea that with patience, and the right ingredients, you can embrace one's flaws and imperfections, and in the end create an even stronger, and more beautiful bond. The process, when it is complete, often results in the piece becoming exceedingly more valuable than it was before."
Kara sat silently as she listened, mesmerized both by the story and the feeling of gentle fingers caressing hers. "Relationships can be similar to Kintsugi. When broken they can take a while to mend, but if the work is put into it, the end result always turns out stronger and more beautiful than before. You are currently putting your pieces back together, so don't be too discouraged that right now you feel on the outside looking in."
Kara was overwhelmed, Diana spoke into her fears and alleviated them in a way no one had been able to since everything with Lena had transpired. She spoke with such compassion and understanding that Kara felt a deep swell of affection and tears welled up in appreciation and she had a sudden urge to lean in and kiss the woman.
"That was beautifully said, Diana, thank you." Kara whispered. "I hope you're right."
"It'll all work out, Kara, of that I'm certain. I've only briefly seen the result of the work you both have already put into it and it's easy to see. Friendships like that last. You're lucky to have each other."
"I'm lucky to have you too." Kara said and winced at how cheesy it sounded, but she meant it. Diana smiled tenderly at Kara and lifted her hand to sweep away a strand of Kara's hair. It was a natural instinct for Kara to lean forward with a tentative brush of lips that was delicate and tender in a way that left her breathless. It didn't last long and they parted far too quickly, but it confirmed for her that this thing between them wasn't fleeting.
Lena was a ball of energy, buzzing around her apartment excitedly as she added pillows to her couch and put the popcorn bowl on the coffee table along with an assortment of bite sized chocolates she knew Kara couldn't resist. She bit her thumb nail as she looked at the scene she had set up and bonked her head before grabbing a couple of blankets from her linen closet to throw on the couch.
She checked her watch for the fifth time in about as many minutes, the pizza had just arrived and Kara should be there any second now. Her apartment was cool, the temperature set low, but all the running around had left her feeling flushed so she freshened up quickly in her bathroom. The doorbell rang shortly after and she briskly made her way over to open it.
Then time and all the fussing and everything that seemed relevant only a few moments ago was suddenly forgotten when Kara's smiling face was revealed on the other side. She had come dressed comfortably with a loose fitting sweater draped over a V-neck T and leggings. Her hair was pulled up in a loose bun and she wasn't wearing her glasses, which still took some getting used to if Lena was honest with herself. She was the most powerful person in the world and yet looked so soft and vulnerable. Lena instantly felt a rush of giddy excitement that she had to tamp down upon seeing her.
"I, uh, brought wine for you and some aldebaran rum for myself." Kara said happily as she held out both bottles in front of her and after a brief hesitation she pulled Lena into a hug, the two bottles clinking together behind Lena's back. "I'm really glad we are doing this." She mumbled softly into Lena's shoulder. It lit Lena's skin on fire, feeling Kara's warm breath on her skin and goosebumps erupted in a wave from her neck down to her finger tips.
"Me too." Lena breathed out as she wrapped her own arms around Kara's waist, enjoying the brief embrace. After a lingering moment she reluctantly stepped back and took the wine from Kara as she gestured for her to come inside. She wanted to say something more but words failed her. The only thing that she desperately wanted to know was how the date had gone but that seemed like jumping the gun too soon. Eat pizza first, maybe get the movie started, before she dives into that landmine of a topic. Food seemed like a safe enough segway, so that was where she decided to start.
"So, I uh, ordered three pizzas, a veggie one for myself." She smiled at the grimace Kara gave. "And for you, a meat lovers and a supreme with extra mushrooms and olives."
Kara took off her flats by the door and walked further into the kitchen where the three boxes of pizza sat on the counter and slipped out of her sweater placing it over one of the barstools along with her other things.
"Mmm, perfect and I don't know about you, but I am starving!"
Lena tilted the bottle of wine along with her head as a way of pointing towards where the glasses were stashed away. "I'm going to get us something to pour these into, make yourself at home." Kara happily obliged, walking straight to a cabinet and opening it up, pulling out two plates. She quickly made a plate for Lena adding two slices of the vegetable monstrosity, then grabbed some ranch out of the fridge and added it to the side, knowing how much Lena enjoyed it with her pizza. She grabbed a napkin as well and set the dish down near Lena, before going about preparing her own.
"Ok so I have movie options, ranging from terrible graphics, to terrible writing, to a combination of both. Which would you prefer?" Kara asked as she began picking off the olives from her pizza. She ate one before adding the rest to Lena's plate.
Lena smiled as she watched Kara maneuver around her kitchen and was quietly charmed at seeing how she seemed to anticipate what Lena liked or wanted without having to ask. She handed Kara her glass of alien alcohol and took a sip of her own red cabernet as she leaned her hip into the counter and thought about it. "You aren't going to tell me the titles?" She picked an olive off her plate and plucked it into her mouth.
Kara shook her head and scrunched up her eyes in answer. It was cute and adorable and she was doomed if this was only the start of their evening together. "Nope. That's all the information I'm giving away. Choose your poison Luthor."
"Well since we are going to suffer no matter which way I go, might as well go all the way... both."
"Excellent choice! Now for the reveal." Kara waved her hands over her face flipping her palms out and in to show that they were in fact empty. Kara pretended to have a confused face and Lena chuckled into her glass of wine at the display of goofiness and then Kara's hands blurred before revealing suddenly a DVD and a mock look of shock swept across the blonde's features. Lena pretended to be surprised and patted her palm with her hand lightly in applause, cautious of spilling the wine.
"You missed your true calling as a magician."
"Eh, I get by alright." Kara smirked. She handed the DVD to Lena to inspect.
"Attack of the 50ft Woman?" Lena asked as she took in the cover photo.
"Yep, it's so bad it's good and I can't wait to poke fun at how a 50ft woman can fit into a regular sized house with no explanation. Or the fact that she somehow becomes transparent when she is giant sized." Kara said excitedly. "But that's all I'm saying." She pretends to zip her lips. "Mmmph mmhmm mmphh." Lena rolled her eyes and laughed. Kara's eyes crinkled with amusement and she moved her fingers back across her mouth as she unzipped her lips. "You'll have to see it to know the rest." Kara finished.
Lena laughed again and grabbed her plate. "You're such an idiot." She said affectionately.
Kara followed her to the couch and shrugged happily. "I know, but you love me for it."
Lena felt her stomach swoop and she looked at Kara with comically wide eyes and her lips curled into a tight lipped smile, as she tried to play off her internal reaction before humming a breathy. "Mmmhm." It came out in a slightly higher octave than she planned and she quickly set her plate and wine down and walked over to her dusty media player, berating herself on the way to get a grip.
"You know I'm sure we could find a service that streams this…" She said in an attempt to drive the conversation forward. She pulled the DVD out of its case and slipped it into the player.
"Nah, this just adds to the experience. If VHS was still easily accessible I would have gone completely old school."
"Well you're lucky I still have a player."
"I knew you would." Kara stated. She was already through half her first slice and getting settled on the couch. She tucked one pillow under her arm and another across her lap as a makeshift table, then realized she forgot to grab the blanket and grumbled to herself as she started over, chomping forcefully into another bite of pizza in protest as she did so.
Lena made herself comfortable as well, sitting a safe distance away with a cushion between them. She grabbed the bowl of popcorn to fill that space and once they were both settled she started the movie.
"Ok so rough summary; An abused socialite has a run in with an alien and becomes a giant, then proceeds to exact revenge on her abusive husband and anyone who gets in her way." Kara reaches for some popcorn while the beginning credits roll.
"Sounds like a typical Saturday for you…" Lena mumbled. She didn't realize she had spoken the words aloud until she heard the snort from Kara's side of the couch as she choked lightly on her drink. Lena glanced at the blonde who was dabbing her shirt off where a couple drops had landed and she laughed.
"You made me ruin my shirt." Kara grumbled.
"I think you have a spare in my dresser if you need to change."
"No, it's alright, it's like three drops, I'll live." Kara put the napkin back down and took another bite out of her pizza. Lena shrugged and put her attention back on the screen, silently relieved she didn't have to part with Kara's sweatshirt. It's held a longer residence there than anything else in her ever changing wardrobe and she wasn't ready to let go of it just yet.
They sat silently after that as they watched the beginning of the movie. Kara had set her plate down next to the bowl of popcorn and Lena kept picking mushrooms and olives off it, while Kara snacked on some of the chocolate she had collected on the blanket in her lap. It was comforting to share in these quiet moments. She often didn't watch movies or tv alone, because it was never that enjoyable when she didn't have someone to bounce commentary off of.
Lena adjusted on the couch slightly as she tucked her feet under her and propped her head on her hand across the back of it so she could easily reach the popcorn. The fact that it put her slightly closer to the blonde...well that was just a bonus. "This is nice. I can't remember the last time I sat down to eat a bunch of junk food while watching a movie." Lena grabbed a handful of popcorn and popped a kernel into her mouth.
"Yeah?"
"It wasn't something I ever really did before." Lena said lightly referencing her past before she had met Kara. "It wasn't until a rather lively blonde haired nerd invaded my life that I really took the time to netflix and chill?"
Kara whipped her head around and stared at Lena for a second before her face broke into a wide humorous smile.
"What?" Lena asked.
Kara very dramatically pulled the pillow off her lap and turned slowly to face Lena with a very serious, if it weren't for the shit eating grin, look. "Lena, what do you think it means when you say 'Netflix and chill'?
Lena stared at Kara blankly, clearly confused at what she thought was a pretty obvious answer. "To watch a movie while relaxing on a couch?" She lazily waved her hand at the said couch and scrunched her eyebrows up as she tried to catch what clearly was a joke hidden somewhere within the question.
Kara gave her a quick pitying laugh and put her hand on Lena's which was still resting between them on the back of the sofa. "Oh honey. No." Another laugh trilled lightly out of her mouth as the humor seemed to have hit her in a second wave. Lena found herself fighting off her own grin just watching the blonde take clear amusement out of whatever this was.
"Can you clue me in here?" Lena asked helplessly, feeling slightly foolish but not understanding why.
"Lena. Netflix and chill means having sex." Kara said through her laughter.
"You aren't serious." Lena said but her hand was already pulling away from Kara's as she tried to hide her face, her own laughter bubbling up from deep within her chest. "Oh no! Suddenly that night a few months ago with Andrea makes so much more sense."
Upon Kara's sudden and abrupt silence and clear confusion Lena elaborated. "I had called her one night, saying something to the effect of "Hey want to come over? We can 'Netflix and chill' and maybe after we can get a bite to eat." Lena smacked her head lightly with her hand and heard the snort that Kara tried to muffle with her own hand. Lena sat silently as she thought back to that night and to her horrific realization gasped and looked up at Kara suddenly, as understanding swept through her memory with the new lens she was suddenly seeing this memory from. "Oh god! She was clearly interested, when she arrived she was dressed in the most revealing dress and she greeted me with a kiss. She kept brushing up against me on the couch and was so handsy. Obviously nothing happened because I was completely and now mortifyingly clueless."
Kara wiped away a tear that had escaped from laughing so much. "If you had known would it have made a difference?"
"Have you seen Andrea?" Lena asked. "It would have been unforgettable. A huge mistake, but one I'd probably look back on and have to take cold showers to keep from making again."
Kara swallowed and her eyes lidded as a blush creeped up her neck and she quickly looked away and reached for her drink to busy her hands. "I didn't realize Andrea was your type."
"Strong, powerful, sexy as hell… yeah who'd be attracted to that?" Lena deadpanned.
Kara seemed to have sobered up significantly from her previous jovial state and was suddenly very interested in the movie again. Lena sensed the change but was unsure what the cause of it was.
"You ok?" Lena couldn't help but ask. Suddenly feeling like she said too much.
"Yeah, fine." Kara said softly and she smiled up at Lena to reassure her which helped calm Lena's nerves but still left her wondering.
"Was it something I said?" Lena asked. This sinking feeling in her gut made her think so, but she needed confirmation.
Kara took in a bated breath and let it out slowly and shook her head. "Not really." She didn't want to lie, but she wasn't sure how to process the conflicting emotions that were suddenly invading her gut. The most confusing of which was envy and that was just… it wasn't possible, and didn't make sense. She wasn't sure why she had asked in the first place, what did it matter if Lena would have or not. Though based on her answer she clearly would've and that sent her gut rolling in nervous energy again and she couldn't understand why. She took a large gulp of her alderbaran rum and let the liquid warm and numb her insides, she must be more inebriated than she realized and that had to be why she was suddenly feeling so untethered. With that in mind she felt the tension ease a bit and she relaxed a bit more. Her leg vibrated lightly and she was pulled from her thoughts. She checked her phone to see a short message from Diana.
Thinking of you.
Kara smiled down at her phone, feeling significantly more calm and that rolling feeling within her gut dissipated completely. There was always this weird back and forth tension between Lena and her now, but with Diana things were simpler and much easier to understand. She typed a quick reply back and set her phone down.
"Was that Diana? Your date must've gone really well." Lena said as she watched Kara visibly relax after receiving that text.
Kara smiled and was silently grateful for the new change of subject. "What makes you say that?"
"That goofy grin on your face." Lena said.
"Yeah it did." Kara said softly.
"I'm happy for you Kara." Lena grabbed another handful of popcorn before retreating back to her side of the couch, nestling into her covers. They watched the rest of the movie in silence. All in all the night went rather well. Lena said her farewells to Kara soon after the movie ended and they hugged again which was a welcome change to their new dynamic, but she couldn't help but feel like the topic about Andrea stifled the evening somehow and she sighed heavily as she lay in bed wondering why. It was just as she was drifting off to sleep when a text lit up her screen throwing her dark room into a gentle glow. Lena lifted the phone up and smiled at the text before setting it down again leaving it unanswered as she let herself succumb to sleep, the words lingering in her dreams.
I'm really grateful to have you back in my life again Lena.
"Kara, if you don't put that alien down in the next 30 seconds we are going to have bigger problems here." Alex's voice boomed in her ear.
"Thank you for the assessment, Sis." Kara shot back quickly, dodging a fist in the process and blasting said alien in the chest with a short but direct hit to the chest with her heat vision. The blast sent the creature reeling back, but didn't do much damage. "J'onn a little help here!"
J'onn shapeshifted, his arm and fist growing and expanding three times in size as he sent it crashing down on the alien. To Kara's horror the alien caught it and a deep and menacing growl erupted from deep within its chest before it twisted around and swung violently at J'onn sending him careening to the pavement below. Kara blasted through the air in warp speed catching J'onn moments before he hit the ground. "J'onn! J'onn!" She yelled and willed herself to not shake his body to wake him. Distantly she heard the alien and her mind screamed to turn and face the creature, but her limbs seemed completely frozen in shock as she stared down at J'onn's sleeping face.
"Supergirl!" A voice shouted in warning to her left, but she knew it was too late. The alien was right upon her and she could only hunch over J'onn protectively before the inevitable blow rendered both of them unconscious. She tensed her muscles and clenched her jaw, preparing herself, only the blow never came. She opened her eyes and turned around to find Diana standing behind her, the alien's fist held firm, mid strike, in her own hand. Her sword and lasso still sheathed and tethered to her side as her left hand held her shield. She brought the alien's striking arm down slightly while raising her shield up before crashing it down at the joint connecting the limb. The crack of bone reverberated through the air and an ear piercing yowl followed quickly behind it. Diana wasted no time unsheathing her sword, severing the creature's head clean off in one swift, precise motion. Then silence. The creature's body stood for a brief second before slumping lifelessly to the ground.
Kara watched, stunned and in awe as Wonder Woman, with a flick of her wrist, shook remnants of blood and bits of alien off her sword before sheathing it once more. Diana turned around slowly assessing Kara and with a twinkle in her eye and a small quirk of her lips she knelt and gently pushed Kara's chin back up effectively closing her gaping mouth. A quiet and low chuckle sounded from Diana's throat and the seductiveness of it sent electricity through Kara's body in a way she had only on one other occasion ever experienced. "Close your mouth, Dear."
"Wow." Kara breathed, still staring at the olive toned beauty. She had seen pictures of Diana as Wonder Woman, but to see her in person, and witness the sheer power she possessed was overwhelming. Diana's worried eyes drifted from Kara's to J'onn. "Is he alright?" Kara's attention instantly averted back to her friend.
"He's knocked out. I should take him to the infirmary though and make sure he doesn't have a concussion." Kara said. Diana stood from her crouched position and nodded. "Yes, I think that's wise." Kara gathered J'onn up into her arms and floated up with ease slowly ascending into the sky. Diana followed just as easily leaving the murmuring crowd and dead alien below in favor of following the blonde.
"You can come if you like." Kara offered.
"I was in a meeting with Lena when we saw the news. I have to get back, but we can meet up after." Diana said. She raised her hand and lightly touched Kara's jaw. The gentle gesture made Kara smile affectionately and her head naturally leaned into the touch. "I'm glad you are alright, I'm very sorry I couldn't get here sooner." She said as she looked sorrowfully at J'onn.
"He's more resilient than you think. I'm sure he's fine, just got hit a little too hard, that's all." Kara assured her. "I should probably get going though, just to be sure."
"Of course, please keep me updated."
"Will do. Thank you."
"National City is my home now too, Kara. I think it's time the world knows it." She leaned forward and kissed Kara gently on the cheek before taking off back towards LCorp.
"Kara. Bring J'onn to me. I'm already prepping the infirmary." Alex said through her comms.
"On my way now." Kara said before taking off.
"Oh and FYI, Wonder Woman just kissed you on national television." Alex said.
Kara's face flushed red instantly. "Oh Rao."
"Yeah. I think we are overdue for a sister's night don't you?" Alex asked, her voice laced with sisterly judgment.
"You might be right." Kara said. She landed and carried J'onn to her waiting sister. Alex turned and pulled out her pen light and gestured to the prepared bed. "I'm always right." She said smugly. Kara rolled her eyes and after gently depositing J'onn onto the bed crossed her arms.
"Tonight?" Kara asked, trying and failing to hide the amusement in her tone.
"I'll bring the potstickers."
