It had been a lovely morning, until Hawkmoth ruined it.
Well, mostly.
Marinette had actually woken up early, and was on time for once. This alone was enough to make it a good day, and not even Miss Bustier's look of surprise as she entered the room could ruin it. Alya and Nino waved at her as she entered, but unfortunately Adrien was not with them.
Marinette had just slid into her seat next to Alya when she heard whispers from behind her. She turned to find Lila talking to a small crowd, and when she heard Marinette listening she raised her voice subtly to allow her to overhear.
"... You'll never guess what Ladybug told me last night!" She told them enthusiastically.
Marinette thought that the only real answer to that would be to leave her alone, in a much less friendly way, but did not say it.
Alya, on the other hand, suddenly took an interest in what Lila was saying and leaned towards her.
"What did she say?"
Lila lowered her voice again, conspiratorially.
"She told me that we are connected."
Marinette's eyebrows shot up, but Alya was again faster.
"How?"
"Not only did she tell me that I'm her best friend, which we all already knew anyway, but she told me that we're related!"
"What?!" Marinette finally couldn't keep quiet.
"Oh yes," Lila ploughed on. "My last name comes from the red my ancestor wore as Ladybug."
"And how do you know that?" Alya challenged. "If this is true, the Ladyblog would just love to know!"
Her tone though was disbelieving. Alya had long ago learned the number one rule of dealing with Lila; if her mouth was moving, she was lying. Unfortunately, not everyone had learned this yet.
At least this time it's a relatively harmless lie, Marinette reasoned, deciding to ignore Lila for reasons of her own sanity. She had just turned around and opened her book when-
Crash!
The window to the classroom shattered as something, no, someone, hurtled through it. A shout of "Akuma!" Came from behind her as a blast of energy hit the teacher, causing her to vanish. The figure stopped moving where she had just been standing, and they got their first good look at him. Unfortunately, Marinette recognised him.
"Timetagger."
"What's up?" The akumatised victim shouted at them. "I'm here for Ladybug!"
As he said this, he almost casually zapped Chloe, and she yelped as she was sent into the past.
"Don't worry!" The Akuma sneered. "I only want her, so there is no reason for anyone else to get hurt!"
There was a dramatic pause. And then the Akuma gave a nasty grin.
"Of course, doesn't mean I won't do it anyway..."
"Are you trying to sound evil, or does it just come naturally?"
Chat Noir leaned against the doorway, eyeing the Akuma with some disdain.
The Akuma just snarled and tried to blast him, but Chat nimbly dodged out of the way.
"Doesn't matter," he shrugged. "You're all out of time."
"That's my line!" The Akuma shouted, taking aim again.
"You're evil, you don't get a line."
As Timetagger and Chat continued trading blows and quips, Marinette grabbed her bag and began edging her way towards the door. Ladybug's presence would soon be required but she had to escape first, and hopefully without being noticed.
True to form, Alya had her phone out already and was busy live-streaming the fight, giving a running commentary that was heavily biased in favour of Chat Noir.
All that went out of the window when she saw Chat react a fraction too slowly to a spray of Timetagger's paint. Not stopping to think, she leapt towards him, and collided with him. Chat went flying.
Marinette?" Chat scrambled to his feet and grabbed his weapon, desperately looking around. The shocked looks of his classmates told him enough. A wave of shock passed through him, giving way to anger. He rounded on the Akuma.
"Give. Her. Back," he snarled.
"You know the deal," Timetagger replied. "Your girlfriend for your miraculous."
Chat just snarled. "Alright, now you really are history."
He gave a yell and charged forward, all thoughts of tactics forgotten, intending to beat the Akuma until it gave Marinette back, but he only had time to see it point its spraycan at him and pull the trigger at point blank range before everything changed around him.
A wave of fresh air hit him and he felt grass under his feet. He looked around and all thoughts of the Akuma vanished.
He knew where he was, and vaguely when, which was the good news. Unfortunately, he had no way back and Paris still needed him.
"Chat?" A familiar voice came from behind him, and he spun around to find Marinette behind him. He was about to scold her for taking the hit for him when she spoke again.
"Chat... where are we?"
He looked around one more time, to make certain of his suspicions, and then replied.
"Tenochtitlan."
Author's note: I know this is a shorter chapter, but we'll get into the meat of the story in the next one. I've had the idea of a time travelling Miraculous story for a few days, and I've got it planned out.
