A/n: Ok folks I will keep this short since this will be the last chapter in the Eddard Stark segment before we change to a new area. As you can tell I am going around different areas and different people. Since this story covers a lot of world building and a lot of changes to characters which is a major OCC's going on. So without further a do and without sounding too stupid while trying not to fall asleep I bring you the next chapter of….
THE WARRIORS OF WINTERFELL
Chapter 25: Departing for King's Landing.
WINTERFELL
"I assure you Lord Stark I will do everything in my power to see the accusations against Lord Baelish are carried out. I will inform your daughters of the situation as well as keep my birds singing. Until then I bid you a good journey here," said Lord Varys as he ended the call on the mirror.
Lord Stark had used the mirror to get in touch with Lord Varys at the time specified by raven. The time spent getting there and back was around several days as the raven can travel faster then the horse and the ship. So with good wind it should not take long to travel at top speed to the capital and back. The only thing that would delay it is of course the need to eat and the weather. But from what he saw the weather was good...at least in Winterfell.
Which brought another good question. He had just received a message from Lord Manderly about the roads to White Harbor. It seems as if bandits are on the roads there as well so Lord Stark will have to deal with them since they are not on Manderly Lands. As he read the reports his face grew more concerned for the people of that area since White Harbor is a major trading hub in the North. It was also the largest city in the North because of said trading hub. Now that he thought about it he had also heard of recent raids on Northern ships. Even though those ships don't carry Northern colors due to the secrecy of their standing. They still carried Northern cargo such as wood, ice, furs, wool, horses, fish, and crafts made in the North. Essos likes the quality of the items sent to them and the ships are disguised to hide their true origin. It was a long standing trade deal with the Good Masters in slave areas such as Volantis and Slaver's Bay.
But in all Lord Stark knows of the trades between cities as well, and had his ship's disguised as Essosian vessels to protect them from tariffs in certain areas. The differences is in the materials used to make the ships and the insides of the ships.
But as he read the reports on the ships and remembering them he also read the reports of the roads. It seems as if Lord Manderly was trying to repair the roads when the first raiders hit. So now he, Lord Poole and Lord Cerwyn are in together trying to figure out a way to deal with the raids and protect the people repairing the roads. He is to meet with them when he departs Winterfell for White Harbor and meet up with Lord Manderly once they got there at the Merman's Court.
He stood up then from his seat behind his desk and placed the mirror back in his drawer. He can't take it with him in case something happens, but he has other means to communicate with home and with his other scouts. It was late when he stood up. The meeting with Lord Varys taking time as the man was accounting for things that concern him in the North and the happenings going on in King's Landing.
It is rare for him to ask the Master of Whispers this, but he needed to know more about the assassination attempt on his wife and son. The man was more the capable to find out who did it and why. Slowly making his way out of his rooms he made his way towards the family wing, and to his bath that awaits him before bed. Beside him was his sword and his armor as he had shed them before slipping into the steaming waters of the naturally heated hot springs. On the bed Catelyn was already asleep as her even breathing and calm demeanor had indicated. Lord Stark sighed as he leaned into the bath.
The water felt good after a long day of working in the fields and then doing his lordly duties. Soon Catelyn and Bran will have to step up in his absence but he felt that this will help her learn how to be the lady she was meant to be. As his muscles relax and the incense took over he felt his mind begin to clear as he waited till he was cleaned. Washing himself he made sure that all the dirt and grime from the day before are gone before getting up and getting ready for bed.
Putting himself under the furs he was greeted by his wife who leaned into him as he curled up around her. Enjoying the time he got to spend with her. Slowly as his eyes shut he felt himself drift off into the darkness of sleep.
THE NEXT MORNING
Lord Stark began to prepare for his journey to White Harbor. Putting Ice into its scabbard he took a deep breath before looking at the assembly before him.
"I must journey to King's Landing to give my allegiance to a boy who might be a false king. Mark my words even if I must bend the knee to him to keep the North's secrets safe I will do so. I will also look for Sansa and Arya my lost kin as well as find out who dared to enter the North to murder our brothers and sisters. The night approaches and winter is coming." he said it and the others in the courtyard repeat it.
"Lady Catelyn will be in charge until my return her words are my words got that," he told the guards who nodded in agreement as Lord Stark got on his horse. He was being accompanied by several men who are all loyal to House Stark as well as Shifu and Robb. Lord Stark was no fool to trick others into thinking about his status he only took a few good men with him. Unlike most lords he wants to make sure the capital thinks he is poor and can't afford more troops. Let them think the wolf is savage and weak. They will find out the hard way if pushed too far.
Turning to his right was Lady Catelyn who stood there in full battle gear with her own sword by her side. Their children or what's left of them stood side by side with her Bran on the back of his wolf. Rickon following suit on Shaggy dog with their wolves in full battle gear.
"May the winds of Winter never reach your home," he said to her.
"May the dream of spring forever fill your thoughts my love," she said and gave him one final kiss before allowing him to leave. He walked over to his horse and got up onto the saddle. The horse made a noise but soon settled as they turned towards the gates. Shifu was also saddled with her own horse her clothes resembled those of a traveler. Robb too was dressed but in armor not in traveling clothes.
Robb and the boys put their fists to their hearts and bowed low to each other before the party departed. As Lord Stark rode out of the gates with his men behind him Catelyn watched him go. Beside her Bran and Rickon along with Robyn Arryn stood there wishing them farewell. The banners of House Stark rode high as they left the gates of Wintertown. They watched them disappear into the moors with the wolves howling behind them.
MEANWHILE
They rode hard and fast across the moors following the road that would lead them to Castle Cerwyn where they would meet with the lord before going to Riverpoole to meet with the Steward there. As they rode hard and fast many people rose up to greet Lord Stark as they went past. Some even were among the Freefolk who moved there and gave him the proper greeting of the True North.
It would take them six hours to reach Castle Cerwyn, but it was enough time for them to get a view of the scenery from here. They rested their horses often and rode hard till at last they came upon the wooden castle not far from Wintertown.
On a hill it stood beside the same river that flowed through Winterfell. Like Winterfell the river is too shallow for any boats to travel to. So instead he had to wait till he gotten to Castle Riverpoole before making his way by boat to White Harbor. In the meantime he would stay at Castle Cerwyn to settle his horses and to get fresh ones. He rode hard with this bunch and another would be for Riverpoole. He would wait here till then and rest up. It had taken half a day and it would take the other half of the day to discuss things with Lord Cerwyn.
Just as he was getting to the gates Lord Cerwyn was seen standing at the door with his wife and sons. Lord Stark dismounted along with his party and gave him a proper greeting. This involves a handshake on the upper arm instead of just in the hands.
"Lord Cerwyn," Lord Stark said in greeting.
"Lord Stark, Lord Stark" Lord Cerwyn said to him and Robb with a smile.
"Come we have much to discuss and much to do," Lord Stark said to him and the man nodded as he led him inside his keep and his town. Robb was left to deal with the men and the horses.
HOURS LATER
Lord Stark stood dumbfounded as he looked at the map of the roads around the North. The many areas that were marked were areas that were targeted by bandits and thieves.
"These men had taken stations here and here along the roads. Every time we go out in force we just miss them as they escape before we can get to them. Either they know our ways and are Northmen themselves, or Wildlings looking to see if they can steal the livelihoods of our people," Lord Cerwyn said to Lord Stark his frustrations growing.
"I don't think so," Lord Stark said as he looked at the map more closely.
"You live along the riverbanks and so does Lord Poole. I think someone is trying to use the river as an escape route. See here where the robberies take place," he said pointing to areas along the road.
"Lord Manderly has told me that there had been raids just outside of Manderly lands so that means that someone is using the river to travel. They must have a base alongside the river. If they do then it must be somewhere no one can see. So I bet if we search along the canyon here and here we might be able to spot them with some Wargs," he said.
Lord Cerwyn nodded, "I don't have any wargs among us, but I can ask any among my population of freefolk. If not we need a good tracker. You daughter was here a while back, Sansa I believe. She helped stop a rogue captain from stealing from Freefolk and accusing them of being Wildlings. The man she helped is now my best tanner and leather maker. I had never had such fine leather," he said to Lord Stark.
"So, Sansa helped this man?" Lord Stark said to Lord Cerwyn. The man nodded and was more then happy to tell the tale. When he was done Lord Stark had never held so much pride for his daughter then he did now. Sansa will one day be a fine example of what a Warrior of Winterfell should be.
"Yes, m'lord she fought bravely with words for him. I sat there and listened to it with my sons. The captain was taken away, but I think some of his men are still out there. If what you are telling me is true then we will need a warg. If not a warg then a tracker." said Lord Cerwyn.
"Do you have one?" asked Lord Stark.
"In fact I do, Cley call in Hammond please," he said to him. The boy nodded and went to get the person. When he returned Lord Stark was not surprised to see someone from the Freefolk walk in. He was a man in his early thirties with a strong physique. It was typical of his people to carry such a physique, but his red hair and blue eyes make him a stand out. He was also covered in stains from the tanning he had to do all day. So as he entered he bowed to show his respect to Lord Cerwyn.
"You summoned me m'lord?" the man asked.
"Hammond this is Lord Stark, Warden of the North, and the ruler of the Northern Kingdom. He needs to ask you a few questions about the man who attacked you," Lord Cerwyn said to Hammond.
"It's about your daughter isn't it Sansa? She saved me and my infant son from that fucken son of a bitch that was called a captain. He...he tried to beat me to death while I was holding my baby boy! She save me, and for that you have my loyal thanks," he said bowing low which Lord Stark stopped by grabbing his shoulders.
"Hammond we need to know if you have any tracking skills. If not, do you know someone who does?" Lord Stark asked politely as the man looked up and nodded, "I do, I can track, I've been hunting when I was caught by that captain and his men. I know how to hunt down deer by their tracks. What is it that you need my tracking skills for?" Hammond asked.
"I need your skills to track down some bandits that have been plaguing these lands." Lord Stark said to him.
"What kind of bandits?" asked Hammond.
"Possibly the same ones that have been attacking other parts of the North. They had been here since the slaver's attack a few months ago. We had tried to find out where they are but so far my men are unable to find them," said Lord Cerwyn.
"Maybe because they are not actually there," said Hammond.
"Care to explain?" asked Lord Stark curiously.
"Well I remembered a man back at the Wall near the Eastwatch area who came from the Shadowlands. He said that there are people who use ancient teleportation spells to disappear and reappear in different areas. I think these bandits might have used such spells," said Hammond stating a fact.
"I think I know someone who might be familiar with such magic. Shifu do you know of some of this?" he asked the woman who remained silent beside him. As she came more towards the light Lord Cerwyn was stunned by such a beauty. Yet her features hide an ancient strength and an even more ancient wisdom. His eyes became large when he saw the long flowing hair and the robes she wore. Similar to those of the southern Septa's except the design and the wear is wrong. It was not worn as a way of worship but a way of defense.
She must be the legendary Shifu of Winterfell. The ancient nameless teacher of Northern Women who has taught many women in the North how to fight. She is also one of the greatest swordsmen and warrior to exist in the known world. And the world's only known true immortal. Bowing low as a sign of respect he allowed the woman to approach. Her slanted eyes bore no ill will to him as she came closer and stood up next to her Lord.
"You speak about the teleportation spell created by a talisman of eastern design. Made by the long lost masters beyond Yi-Ti it was used as a way to instantly teleport from one place to another. However the consequence was that one uses a lot of spiritual energy. Their souls put themselves at risk from using such dangerous magic. If these men are using such talismans then they are not actually here in the North!" Shifu said to them.
"What?" said both Lord Cerwyn and Lord Stark.
"If such talismans are still in existence they have to have a source of power. A person of powerful magic or an area that contains powerful magic to support such talismans. If these are what I think they are, then these men are not from the North at all," said Shifu as she looked at the map.
"Where did you say that the attacks happen?" she asked Lord Cerwyn.
"Here near the river pass. There is a canyon there that divides the road as you go down it towards White Harbor. You have to pass through here to get to Riverpoole and then further down towards White Harbor. The only other route is the King's road here and then take an off pass near Moat Cailin but that would take longer then getting to Riverpoole and taking a boat there." said Lord Cerwyn.
"So the bandits are stationed here then along the river near the road. They must have a transport ring here to take them to their destination. The only way they could have created this is with a very powerful magical source a person or an object. But I don't know of anything that has that much magic in the area. Maybe you can tell me if there are any weirwood trees or any sort of shrines to the old gods here?" asked Shifu.
"Not that I know of; maybe there is one on the Poole's lands? You could ask them?" Lord Cerwyn said.
"I don't think so these lands are mostly marsh and rocky craigs, no weirwoods would grow here," said Robb pointing to the area around the river.
They indeed looked at the map and saw for themselves the patch of marshland that surrounds the river in the canyon.
"Maybe there is a hidden patch somewhere," said Hammond. He looked at the map more closely as if studying it. He then pointed to a spot right on the border where the road collides.
"Here! There is a crossroad that goes to White Harbor to the south, Moat Cailin to the East and the borders between the Cerwyn and the Poole lands to the North," he said and sure enough it was not a well known road, but there was indeed a crossroad that led to it.
"I bet there is where we would find where the thieves are coming from!" said Lord Cerwyn and Lord Stark agreed. It was along the route to White Harbor. If they were able to find it it would be here.
"Hammond do you know anyone who can be a warg?" he asked the man and the Freefolk man nodded before running off to find someone. It was not long till he reappeared with woman in tow. She was older then Hammond with gray hair and a round face. But her features showed a warrior bred probably a former shield sister.
"M'lord's this is Lori she can find the men for you," Hammond said to them.
"Are you a warg?" asked Lord Stark and the woman nodded nervously.
"I need you to see if there are any animals near this crossroad. If there are I need you to see if you can spot some bandits for me. Tell me where they go and how they got here to the North," he said. Shifu then pulled out something from her pocket.
It was a mirror.
"We will be able to see what you see with this. Can you use the animal you shift to, to take this with them?" Shifu asked.
"I can do better, I am not just a warg I am a shifter too," the woman said and demonstrated by becoming a cat. When she returned to her human form the men were surprised.
"Shifters are rare, Shifu didn't you say that you encountered a few in your travels?" Robb asked her. The woman nodded, "They are rare, but they are useful at times. Shifters unlike normal Wargs can change their forms after acquiring an animal's mind. It takes years of training and discipline to acquire the skill. Tell me did you study with master Bloodraven?" she asked her.
"No, my family was unable to make the journey at the time so I studied under a different master. This one I don't know her name, but she was a hunter from the Thenn tribe. She taught me instead since I accidentally stumbled upon the ability while practicing my warging," she said.
Both Shifu and Lord Stark looked at each other in awe. Such a skill at her age was an asset indeed. They will have to use it while she is here. Turning towards them Lori shifted her form to that of a white falcon. Lord Stark passed the mirror to her allowing her to hold it in her talons. The mirror was facing her body, but the back where the jewel was hidden was facing down towards the ground. Releasing her into the air she flew off in the direction that was indicated on the map.
"We best head off to eat supper it has been a long journey and she will take some time before she reaches the area. Hopefully by nightfall we can have our answers," said Shifu as they returned towards the area of rest.
It was around midday when the call came that the Warg has returned. Shifu was meditating in the Gods wood with Lord Stark and Robb when the call came. She rose from her sitting position to see what was going on. Upon her arrival she was surprised the woman looked out of breath. In her hand she clutched something that she had obviously taken from one of the men. She presented it to Lord Stark who carefully took it out of her hand. When he opened it he saw a sigil on it that he recognized from Essos.
"Golden Company?" he asked her.
"Either that or flaming crows who also uses a similar sigil. But I doubt it is either of them. The crown has no money to pay them and even if they did they have the Gold Cloaks so why bother?" asked Lord Cerwyn who had arrived behind Lori.
"The Gold Cloaks will be too obvious if it was them. We need to find out more did you see where they went?" Lord Stark asked Lori. The Freefolk woman nodded as she described the area she saw.
"The seal you told me about is here near the river pass just south of the crossroads. It is hard to see since it is under the cover of the forests there but once found it is hard to miss." Lori replied.
"Did you see how many men come through that seal?" asked Shifu looking determined when she said it.
"About three dozen men at the most. The seal is quite large and they have horses and carriages with them that carry the loot away. Though I heard one of the men speak in a funny accent?" Lori replied.
"Do you still have the mirror with you?" Shifu asked her and she nodded before she presented the mirror. Shifu quickly swiped her hand across the mirror causing it to glow a strange light as she hit a few strange symbols. When the image changed to smaller images she hit one near the top. It instantly showed the images that Lori took as she flew over the mountains. When she noticed the symbols on the ground she stopped the moving image and zoomed in by spreading her fingers. What they saw made them curse.
"We need to break that circle," said Lord Stark.
"We need to find the source first. From this circle I can tell it is not anywhere near the source. But we can find it by tracing the energy that it leaves behind," said Shifu as she looked closer at the image.
"There! See these two wagons that just appeared?" she said pointing. Lord Stark nodded.
"Send Lord Cerwyn here to deal with them. I think I know where they are coming from." she said to him and at her Lord's questioning gaze she pointed to a single spot on the map.
King's Landing.
HOURS LATER
Lord Stark's party had left Castle Cerwyn with a group of Cerwyn men to accompany him. Since the road they are traveling on will take them to both the bandit's hiding spot and the Poole's keep he was not too worried. Since he now knows where to avoid the bandits. The plan was simple and pretty far fetched. He had laid orders to all the surrounding lands to avoid this particular type of road and to have an expert tracker with them. Have the tracker find the circles around the roads and take alternate routes to avoid the bandits. Then Lord Stark will get to King's Landing by the way of the sea. From there he will find the source of the transportation circles and deal with them.
"I want men posted in certain areas surrounding the areas the bandits are known to frequent. When you see caravans I want you to inform them of the bandits and lead them to alternate routes. Choose different ones at random to confuse the bandits. When we find the source of power in King's Landing and shut the gates permanently we will send you a signal to kill them," Lord Stark said.
Lord Cerwyn nodded in agreement he and Lord Poole needed to do this to clear their lands. "I will also see to it that there are no more of these portals throughout the North. Bad enough we have to deal with slavers and pirates. Now this crap, I will not have it here!" he said and Lord Cerwyn also agreed with a slamming of his fist to his chest. The others in their party agreed as well.
Since they can't destroy the seal or steal any sort of talismans from the bandits without alerting the people on the other side. The best choice is to foil their hunting. The act of it requires Lord Poole and Lord Cerwyn to lead these caravans away to alternate roads that the bandits don't know about. These roads go around the main roads and are well hidden to those not knowing where to look. When the bandits do come hunting the Northmen will be waiting for them.
"Thank you Lord Stark for helping us find a solution to our problem," said Lord Cerwyn and Lord Stark nodded in gratitude, "I wish I could stay to carry out the plans but I am needed in the capital at all haste. From what I understand King Joffrey is not a very patient ruler," Lord Stark replied.
Lord Cerwyn spat on the ground cursing the boy's name, "That boy should be exposed for what he is," he said.
"Now, now you know as well as I that if we are straight forward with this it would expose us. Not only that, but King's Landing is not a place to be honest. It is a nest of vipers and rats. We best tread carefully when we are there," said Shifu as she rode beside Lord Stark and Lord Cerwyn.
"Understood Shifu, Well Lord Cerwyn we better be off now until the sun rises my friend," he said and grasped his wrist.
"Until the sun rises my Lord," Lord Cerwyn replied as he saw them towards the border of their lands. Lord Stark watched as the Cerwyn men separated from their party leaving them alone to travel towards the Poole's keep which is about several leagues away.
It took most of the day to get there and even then they had to camp out for the night. My midday the next day they finally see the small keep just over the horizon on the cliff of a small ravine which leads to the river below. The name Riverpoole suits this place well as the waterfall that flows through the keep gave it a spectacular view. It was not overly large like Winterfell or Castle Cerwyn, but Riverpoole was still a sizable keep for a small noble family. When they neared the castle walls they could hear the gates opening when they arrived. The keep itself has a small village that it oversees which is not as large as Wintertown. The keep itself is rather warm on the inside just like Winterfell. But unlike Winterfell it does not have any hot springs to keep it warm. Instead it relies on the waterfall to turn a wheel which then turns a furnace to warm the water that flows through the Keep to keep it warm.
When they entered the gates of the keep the Poole family was there to greet them...minus Lord Poole himself who is at Winterfell serving as steward. Instead his oldest son who is around the same age as Catelyn stood at attention. He introduced the rest of his household and it was at this time that the Stark Party was briefed on the thieves.
"We just gotten the raven from Lord Cerwyn of your solution to the problem Lord Stark." Lord Poole replied as he sat at the main table.
"Aye, it is a temporary solution for now until we find the power source for those transportation seals. Once we find them we can deal with the bandits for they can't escape once we do." Lord Stark replied.
"Why couldn't we just attack them now and take one of their talismans?" asked one of Lord Poole's sons who looked to be around Robb's age. Lord Poole glared at his son for speaking out of turn before apologizing to Lord Stark.
"Forgive me m'lord but my son does not know the term discretion," Lord Poole replied as once again glared at his son who shrank down in shame. It was this time that Shifu approached, "Any normal time a person can be there to do the deed. But this is a long distance transportation seal. It is keyed to a power source, and if I am right it will be heavily guarded. If we were to say take a few men kill some bandits and take their talismans to the seal. We don't even know the password that they used to get to King's Landing and even then, how do we fight off the men on the other side. We don't know how many there are. So caution and discretion is absolutely important here."
Lord Poole nodded in reply, "House Poole will aid House Cerwyn in the security of the caravans. I just hope Lord Stark for our sake that you know what you are doing," said Lord Poole. Lord Stark nodded before retiring for the night.
They did not stay very long at Riverpoole. For two days of rest they remained till the third day led them to the docks alongside the river that would take them to White Harbor. As they traveled along the river from there it was smooth sailing for a three hour long ride. The fast moving river helped with the speed and only when they neared the port that the river slowed allowing the to see White Harbor in all its glory.
Contrary to popular belief White Harbor is not a creaky old harbor in the North. The Manderly family had kept up a standard which still persists to this day. Being adopted from the Reach the Manderly's have used the same trading routes as everyone else. The only exception was the weapons and the ships they used. Manderly ships as they are called are heavily armed ships with strong Ironwood planks topped with metal layers underneath for protection. Though it looks as if the ship would be heavier. It in fact does not change the weight of the ship.
The ship's design is to hold the weaponry there. And so when someone attacks the ships they get a very nasty surprise. That is why the Ironborn forego attacking Manderly ships. The ships and the crew are more then formidable when it comes to protecting their cargo. It also paved the way for the Ironborn to go into talks with the North. And with that a trade agreement was made with the Ironborn which benefited both. It was due to this that the Manderly's are one of the wealthiest families in the North next to the Starks.
As Lord Stark and his party see the gates to White Harbor a horn was sounded. As if on cue the river gate which are grated opened for them. Their horses stored along the ships hold for them were eager to get to shore. As they crossed into the city of White Harbor the sounds of sea gulls and ships were present. The scent of the ocean filled Lord Stark's nose as he looked at all the buildings that were erected around the harbor. It was when they neared the center of this water town that a statue of a merman sat in the center of the watery intersections. People made their way through the bustling streets and the sounds of carts could be heard. Yelling and screaming of sailors as they either docked or un-docked from the harbor was also heard. It was when they neared the area where their own ships were to be stationed that Lord Stark could clearly see the Manderly's ready to greet him.
"Quite the welcoming party eh m'lord?" said Shifu from her stance beside him.
"Aye, the Manderly's are well known to be very welcoming of guests. Have the men ready to depart in five minutes," Shifu saluted before going below deck to gather the men.
Upon getting their orders the Stark men were ready for departure from their ship. Lord Stark had them stationed and ready to leave when the plank was dropped and the ropes were tied. So it was no surprise that Lord Manderly's son was there to greet them.
"Lord Wylis it is good to see you again," said Lord Stark as he exchanged pleasantries with the eldest son of Lord Manderly.
"Aye, A pleasure Lord Stark, father had received your message and is waiting for you in the Merman's Court," said Wylis and Lord Stark gave a nod as they then waited for the horses to be led down before making their way towards the New Castle Keep just off in the distance.
As they rode through the streets he noticed that the traffic is well organized as it should be. Arrows point in the direction traffic should flow and trade was up as vendors shouted their products from the many stalls alongside the streets. The group made their way through the streets and Lord Stark paid extra attention to detail as they made their way towards New Castle home to the Merman's court and the seat of House Manderly.
When they approached the keep the Manderly sigil was strong along the walls. Ocean themes were everywhere here as they entered the gates of the keep. Even here people were busy working with traders and sailors to produce a profit. The Stark party were led to an area where they could dismount their steeds and make their way towards the main area where the Lord is surely waiting.
"Lord Stark I am glad you could make it!" said Lord Manderly who sat there behind his chair. Unlike his sons who are physically fit Lord Manderly's poor health has forced him to sit on a wheeled chair. He has a horrible case of gout which made him unable to get up from his chair and caused his body to swell up due to complications with his diet.
"Lord Manderly," said Lord Stark as he bowed with his two hands crossed to show his respects. The other man merely lifted his hands and gave a slight bow. When the pleasantries were over Lord Manderly ushered them towards his solar, but not before telling the Stark men where they can rest.
"You must be tired after a long journey and the situation with the Pooles and the Cerwyns," Lord Manderly said to him as they were given their bread and salt.
"Yes, I am tired Lord Manderly but this situation can't wait. His highness King Joffrey demands I be in King's Landing within a moon. But because of the speed of your ships I am willing to stay here to discuss some things concerning the raids on the Western Coast," Lord Stark replied.
"Ah yes, I heard about that and have sent ships to help the Ironborn both in the Iron Islands and along the Northern Coast. I've also sent ships to Bear Island and all the towns along the coast to offer supplies since winter is nearly upon us," Lord Manderly said as he showed Lord Stark the reports that he had not gotten yet of the recent happenings.
"This report details the ships and their destinations and cargo. It also gives details of the recent activities that has been going on this side of the continent." Lord Manderly stated which Lord Stark thanked him for. As he looked through the reports Lord Manderly was going over his travel details since he knows the seas best.
"The best time to leave would be about two to three days time. There is a storm coming from the south so we have to wait till it passes before you are cleared to leave. From there it would take about three days nonstop travel to get to King's Landing. There is a current that goes south that the ship will catch to help with speed," said Lord Manderly.
"Thank you Lord Manderly for your vast knowledge," Said Lord Stark as the other man beamed.
As they walked towards their rooms Lord Stark turned to address Shifu who was walking beside him. The entire short meeting they had with Lord Manderly was brief but it was only a formality. The real meeting starts later in the night when all the servants are asleep. The solar that Lord Manderly presides in is kept near his bed chambers, but far enough away so that he can't disturb his wife. It also helps with his ailing health and heal issues that he currently has.
Lord Stark's room is located on the opposite side of Lord Manderly's family wing in the guest quarter. It was of course marked with the Merman sigil to show whose house you are in and decorated in ocean themes. The green and aqua colored tapestries gives the room a feeling of being underwater. Lord Stark had been here often enough in his youth that he knows which is his chambers. He bid Shifu farewell as he walked into his rooms and saw how it still is after all these years. The same ocean themed furniture is here with sea shells as decorations along with various corals and fish sculptures. Even though it was supposed to help with relaxation Lord Stark misses his home in Winterfell. He saw the bathing area and went to clean himself up before taking a nap.
MEANWHILE
Shifu looked around her room checking for spies or any sort of listening holes or peep holes. Since she is on the level that no one has deemed. The immortal felt satisfied before going for her own bath. But instead of taking a nap she instead decided to meditate for a few hours. As she sat cross legged she let her mind drift into nothingness. Extending her senses to hear, smell, and touch things that she would not notice.
She expanded her senses across the ways into the town below her. As she listens and feels her way around she expands her mind to touch those around her. As she does so she could feel the many people around her as she passes shoppers going to the stalls to get last minute things. She could hear the birds squawking overhead. The ships rocking on the docks and the waters below them. As she expanded her senses she could feel the storm as it approached from the south just like Lord Manderly said. She even spotted the lighthouse at the end of the harbor.
As she had done so she felt along the storm to feel its power. It was a strong storm and she knew that Lord Manderly was wise to delay their travel to avoid unnecessary death. As she felt the storm she could also feel and hear everything around her from the waves to the wind. It was these moments that Shifu cherishes as she meditated. The inner peace of the world feels cold to her as she pulls herself back again. As she opens her eyes she finds herself once again in her room with the sound of the ocean in the distance. The smells of the ocean also flow into her room. It was a different smell to Winterfell with the smell of the forest and the sounds of the song birds and the wolves.
Here it is the sounds of the sea that attracts people here. Shifu has missed such sights since it has been nearly thirty years since she has last visited White Harbor.
Just as she was about to rise there was a knock at the door. She slowly rose so as not to tear any muscles and walked slowly towards it. The sun had already set if she was guessing right by the light outside her window. Opening the door she was greeted by the sight of Lord Stark as he waited for her. Nodding silently she made him wait outside while she straps on her weapons. Walking out they met in silence as they walked towards Lord Manderly's solar. One of the guards stood at the door along with one of Lord Stark's men.
"Lords Manderly are waiting for you Lord Stark," said the Manderly guard.
"Very well," Lord Stark said and the man went in to announce them. When he returned a few seconds later he held the door opened for them and allowed them entrance. When they entered the door was quickly shut and the locks in place. Lord Manderly gestured for them to have a seat and poured them some tea instead of ale. This night they need to be sober.
"There is a storm brewing in the capital and not outside our windows," Lord Manderly said and to emphasize that the distant sounds of thunder could be heard in the distance.
"I am aware of what is brewing in King's Landing," said Lord Stark as he sat down.
"Aye, but you don't know all of it," said Lord Manderly as he slipped in a piece of parchment. Lord Stark looked at it and saw something he thought he'd never see in a long time.
"Is this the queen's writing?" he asked Lord Manderly.
"No, it came directly from someone who wishes to start a war with us. Just after we heard about the assassination attempt on your family m'lord I've sent spies to speak to every sailor on this side of the Narrow Sea. News spreads fast these days on the water. And from what I hear things are getting rather interesting in the capital." he said.
"Define, 'interesting,'" said Lord Stark.
"As you know the queen suspects that the North is being, 'disobedient,' but I think that is a false claim. You see the queen herself is busy spoiling her son, our new king, with praises and gifts. But in reality she is borrowing money from the Iron Bank and they are beginning to take a toll," he said to Lord Stark.
Now he had heard about the kingdom's bankruptcy but this is news, "What kind of tow?" he asked Lord Manderly.
"The queen has rejected meeting with the Iron Bank due to a mishandling of the funds. Now if I understand it correctly the Master of Coin is normally in charge of such claims but she wanted to control the money herself. And thus had a man named Petyr Baelish the Master of Coin take out loans from the Iron Bank to keep up with pretenses. She also owes Tywin Lannister her own father three million dragons. The Tyrells, the Faith of the Seven and others who make the crown sink deeper and deeper into the hole. As much as I despised the Mad King. The man knew how to keep the treasury full. He was good at that I can tell you. But now we have fools and incompetents in charge I have a feeling that the old lion will not sit on the throne in Casterly Rock for long," said Lord Manderly.
"Do you know if Tywin is on the move to the capital yet?" asked Lord Stark.
"Last I heard he had just taken a ship out of Lannisport and is making his way to the reach right now to pick up Lord Tyrell and his party," replied Lord Manderly.
"If Lord Tywin is on the move by sea it probably means the old lion will most likely want to take his position as hand Lord Stark," said Shifu from her seat next to him.
"If he is to be Hand of the King at least I will rest in peace to know that someone has the balls to keep our new King in line," Lord Stark said to Lord Manderly. The other man nodded in agreement since they both know that no one, not even King Joffrey can compete with Tywin Lannister.
"So does that also mean that the Martells are going to King's Landing?" asked Lord Manderly.
"Most likely not, Prince Doran's health does not let him travel much and his brother Prince Oberyn would rather slay them all then come to King's Landing. But I would not be surprised if they do. After all Prince Oberyn is known to frequent brothels quite often," said Lord Stark smirking remembering the bright and energetic prince when he made his visit to Winterfell many years ago.
"Ah I see, so you've met with the Martells before m'lord?" asked Lord Manderly.
"I have, Prince Doran came to Winterfell to study at the library. He was interested in several topics which is normal for someone from Dorne. He wanted to see if there were better ways to improve the water extractions there as well as learn a bit more about politics. His brother Oberyn had wanted to learn more about the types of poison that the citadel refuses to give him. Which is typical of him. We are still on good terms seeing as I was outspoken about punishing both Gregor Clegane and Tywin Lannister for their crimes against the Targaryens. I may have been with Robert at the time but I will not stoop so low as to punish children and innocents for the sake of wiping out a whole house," Lord Stark replied to him and the other man nodded in agreement.
"Do you think they will be forced to attend?" asked Shifu to Lord Stark but the other man shook his head.
"I don't think so, after all to do that would be an act of war with Dorne. I don't think the crown could even afford to pay off its army with the money they have now," he said.
"So that would explain the bandits in the North. Steal from Northmen because we are supposedly the easiest to target," said Lord Stark putting his hand into a fist. The amount of anger that pulsed from it was enough to unsettle Lord Manderly. But Shifu's softer hands made up for it as she gently comforted her lord.
"Lord Stark I know right now you want to slaughter every one of them but now is not the time," she corrected him and he started to take deep breaths to relax. When he was done he looked up at Lord Manderly again.
"Has their been any pirates in your area other then the Ironborn?" Lord Stark asked.
"Yes, since the Iron Islands has been hit by that wave of slavers and are still recovering. There has been in increase in slaver activities lately. So it was no surprise that we had to up our security to ensure that our goods and our crews are safe," Lord Manderly stated to him.
"Are all the coastal cities doing what I asked them to do?" Lord Stark asked him and Lord Manderly nodded, "All borders from the south east have increased their security in case of an attack from the Veil. All eastern coastal cities have also increased their defenses. All ships from the North have asked for extra weaponry and defenses. We are ready m'lord," said Lord Manderly.
Lord Stark nodded and just as he was about to say more the wind started to rattle the windows and the sound of thunder became very loud. He saw Lord Manderly walk up and close the windows one by one. Then lightning crashed outside lighting up the sky behind him but it was enough to know that the storm had finally arrived.
"The crown owes a lot of money to the families involved. I would not be surprised if Tywin Lannister is also going to collect his due from his grandson," said Lord Stark as he sat back in his chair. Lord Manderly had to agree with in about the Lannisters. Tywin was no fool and to do so would be to call him an outright liar.
"Is he involved with the bandits?" asked Lord Manderly.
"No, that I am sure of, who ever is doing this and placing transportation seals must be doing so across Westeros not just the North. Lord Tywin does not tolerate thieves of the sort. He also does not tolerate any sort of descent among his lords. So he is also going not only to pay homage as Warden of the West, but to do the same thing I am doing. Perhaps if I linked up with him and Lord Tyrion who is at the capital right now we can come up with a solution to the problem," Lord Stark said.
"Good idea m'lord if we can get Lord Tywin on our side then perhaps we can squash the descent before it gets out of hand," Lord Manderly said.
"It would be wise to tread carefully as Lord Tywin is known to be a cunning man," said Lord Manderly's son Wylis for the first time since they have arrived. Lord Stark had forgotten that Lord Wylis was sitting in the shadows always at his father's side. Not only was he the man who would one day run White Harbor and all the main shipping lanes in the Eastern half of the North. But he was one of the richest men in Westeros. Lord Manderly and his son were close that much was certain.
Lord Stark smirked as he turned to look at the door and the guard standing out there with the Manderly man. "Yes, Lord Tywin is a clever man, so clever that he allowed his son to escape and become the Librarian of Winter and his other son to become a Kingsguard. But it goes to show how much the man cares for his own children. His daughter was absolutely horrible in Winterfell when she made demands that we know we can't show her. So if she so happens to be this way in King's Landing I would not be surprised that Tywin would put her in her place," a voice said.
Both Manderlys jumped by the outspoken guard as he entered the room. Lord Stark and Shifu smirked when the guard removed his helmet to reveal Robb Stark standing there.
"Young Lord Stark how long were you standing near the door?" asked Lord Manderly surprised.
"Long enough," he said smirking.
FLASHBACK
RIVERPOOLE THREE DAYS PRIOR
"Father you wanted to see me?" said Robb as he entered the solar.
"Yes son, I wanted to see you," Lord Stark said to him as Robb closed the door behind him. He sat down in the chair offered to him by his father. Lord Stark had a smirk on his face as he leaned back into the chair.
"Father you are making me nervous what do you want from me?" Robb asked him. Lord Stark smirked as he looked at his son. "Son how good is your acting skills?" Lord Stark said to him.
"I've been pretty good so far with pretending to be monsters with the children," Robb replied but Lord Stark's smirk grew and that made Robb look down at his feet in anticipation.
"Son I need you to pretend to be someone. I need you to pretend to be a guard for me," Lord Stark said to him. This surprised Robb, A Guard? He thought.
"A guard father?" Robb replied and Lord Stark nodded, "Yes, a guard so that way no one can notice you. Can you do that for me?" Lord Stark said to him.
Robb nodded with the honor and with confusion, "I thought I was supposed to present myself to his highness?" Robb asked.
"That is why I brought Shifu with me. She is a master of disguise and she has a few tricks up her sleeves. You two will switch places when we are in King's Landing whenever we are around his majesty in official parties. Other then that you will be dressed as a guard which will allow you to move freely and unnoticeable. Shifu will then be able to take your place in case someone does check up on you. She knows you best after all," Lord Stark replied smirking.
Robb finally understood, his father is well known in the seven kingdoms so it would not be in his favor to go looking for trouble. Robb on the other hand is not known and he looks more like Lady Catelyn then Lord Stark. Shifu is the same height as Robb so she can easily disguise herself as him with the help of a wig, some makeup and talismans. Though she does not have his build that can easily be hidden with some special padding in his clothes. His father is indeed clever.
"So father do I have to be in disguise when we leave Riverpoole?" he asked Lord Stark and the other man nodded which in turn made Robb smile. His acting skills would come in handy here.
"What about Greywind?" Robb asked.
"Greywind will have to stay at Winterfell. He would bring too much attention if he were to follow. However your warging skills will allow you to communicate with him should you need him." Lord Stark replied and Robb finally understood the full disguise. But one question remained.
"Father what if Shifu and I have to be in the room at the same time?" he asked. Lord Stark smirked as he looked towards the door. Robb turned his head and saw Shifu standing there in full dress, "We have it all worked out young lord. If both of us has to be in the room at the same time we will both go at the same time. I have one of my girls pose as me when I am you and vice versa." Shifu replied and Robb smirked enjoying this plan more and more.
END FLASHBACK
Robb stood in front of them with a smirk on his face which was followed by equal smirks from the other two men in the room, "Lord Stark is cleaver in disguising his son as a guard. So I take it the plan is to allow your son to freely move about in the Red Keep posed as a guard while the rest of your party remains for appearances," said Lord Manderly. Lord Stark smirked, "Yes, and in the meantime Robb here will be able to access many places within the keep to find out the whereabouts of Sansa and Arya. When he makes contact will will be able to fortify a network with Lord Varys. So that way we can make a secure spy network to put ears to the ground against the ones responsible for raiding our shores." Lord Stark replied.
"What about the Ironborn?" Lord Manderly said to him.
"I will get in contact with Asha and see if we can secure an ocean line to you. And from there we can have both land an ocean covered. Anyone who dares threaten the North at this time will be dealt with swiftly," Lord Stark replied.
"I will work with any Ironborn who is willing to do some privateer work with me. As I stated in the letter I have had an increase in pirates and slavers. So with their help they not only be able to pay the iron price to their god they can help us as well," stated Lord Manderly. Lord Stark nodded with Lord Manderly finally understanding what is at stake.
"Now we shall also deal with the ones responsible for the magic seals around the North." said Shifu as she straightened up in her chair.
"Yes, the other thing I was meaning to ask you is that the bandits that have been raiding your shores. Have they been going in and out of certain locations lately?" Lord Stark asked.
"Yes, my maester has been able to identify at least three travel seals on our lands. Two out at sea. Whoever planted those seals knew what they were doing when it came to magic. I would not be surprised if the power sources are from Essos. Magic brews strongest there," said Lord Manderly.
"It also brews quite strongly in the capital due to the dragon bones that are there," said Shifu from her seat. Robb then put his input in, "If that is true then won't they be detected by the Maesters there?"
"No, the Maesters in the south are not as educated as the ones in the North. Northern Maesters go through extra training when here so they can identify any sort of magic. They also are sworn to secrecy by the Brotherhood of Northern Maesters." Shifu replied.
"Brotherhood of Northern Maesters?" Robb asked and then he remembered his lessons.
The Brotherhood of Northern Maesters are an organization of Maesters from the North who work alongside the Library of Winter. They answer directly to the Librarian and swear a sacred vow of secrecy. Any new Maester that comes from the Citadel must swear fealty to the brotherhood and accept additional training. Or else they will be sent back with their tails between their legs. This ensures that the secrets of the North remain secrets. Only those who pass the tests of the Brotherhood are allowed to be trained to be Maesters in Northern keeps. Since the secrets of the North are kept that way and with tight security no one knows south of the Neck what the Maesters are truly capable of,
Robb shuttered at the thought but he kept his focus on the discussion. When his understanding returned he looked to his father who nodded alongside him. Robb also sensed that this is where the real thoughts come in handy.
"So they wouldn't know of this sort of magic if it was in their face?" Robb said to them. Shifu was the one who spoke.
"Yes, if that were the case then the crown might have sent others. Either we have a strong sorcerer in our midst or we have a traitor. Both of which will not bode well for any of us," Shifu's eyes were cold and calculating.
"So if it were the case then what shall we do?" Robb asked our of curiosity.
"If there is a sorcerer there then we must deal with him or her immediately. Such attacks are bound to spark wars if one were to discover their motives. We can't afford that," Lord Stark said.
"But m'lord there is already a war brewing in the south with talks of King Joffrey being a bastard along with his siblings. Lords Renly and Stannis Baratheon have been seen gathering their armies as we speak. Both of which want to fight for the throne. If that were the case then war is sure to brew among them," said Lord Manderly.
"If that were the case the North, the Iron Islands, and Dorne are not going to participate. That much I am certain," said Robb from the side.
"That is true, both the North and the Iron Islands have been hit hard by the slaver attacks. Dorne does not want to deal with politics from the Northern kingdoms especially King's Landing. Lord Stark what is your intake on this?" Lord Manderly asked. As if to demand answers as well thunder boomed outside along with another round of lighting strikes.
"My take on it is that the middle kingdoms, the Riverlands, the Vale, the Westerlands and the Reach will all take sides with either the Crownlands or the Stormlands. As far as succession goes if Robert's children were bastards then Stannis was supposed to be king. But as I found out Robert has two children that are legitimate. He had them disguised to look more like their mother then him. But Prince Tommen and Princess Marcella are both his rightful children. Joffrey is the son of both Queen Cersei and the Kingslayer." he said and as he said it anger grew in him at what they did to Bran. But he had to take a few breaths to calm his inner wolf lest he do something stupid.
"I've heard what he did to your son. Don't worry m'lord he will get his due," said Lord Manderly.
"No, I will give him his due alongside my own children. But I will not be the one to punish him. I will leave that to Lord Tywin himself. If there is one thing he does not tolerate it is the stupidity of his own children. Or so Lord Tyrion has told me," Lord Stark replied.
"I see, so I take it another part of your plan is to get Lord Tywin to see what his children have done to yours?" Lord Manderly said with a smirk on his face picking up where this is going.
"Yes, rest assured I have the means to show him proof. If I can prove to him what they did was wrong then he will have no choice but to deal with it. They are his children and they carry the Lannister name. So if they do then he has to act. But to act against us will be against his better judgment." Lord Stark replied to him.
"I see well done m'lord," Lord Manderly said and looked outside, "The hour grows late and when the storm abides then we shall leave at first high tide," he said and Lord Stark knows that he too is weary and tired. He rose to his seat and thanked the Manderlys for their meeting before stepping out with Robb replacing his guard helmet.
"I have Lord Robb's rooms already arranged as per your request. I'll also arrange a hot bath for him after being in that armor all day," Lord Manderly said as they were leaving.
"Thank you Lord Manderly," said Lord Stark as they walked out.
When they were near Lord Stark's rooms Robb turned to his father, "How will we get in contact with Sansa and Arya?" he asked his father.
"I will have Lord Varys do the arrangements we just have to worry about the Queen, Lord Baelish and their numerous spies," Lord Stark replied. Shifu also gave her approval on the idea.
"Good with that settled we can retire for the night," as he said this allowed himself to open the door for them to rest. Shifu continued walking towards the servants quarters. Robb being the Lord's son walked into his father's room and slept on the couch after he had a bath. Lord Stark knew that the Manderlys were expecting Robb so they had his room set up. When he never appeared they never said a thing which he counted on for discretion was of the utmost here.
As the storm rages outside the windows were shut and he took out Ice to clean. The large sword looked cumbersome to most but Lord Stark and his forefathers before him are all masters of the sword. As he polished the sword and then placed it onto his lap for mediation he allowed himself to clear his mind of all the anger and frustrations before settling down for the night.
MEANWHILE
Robb sat cross legged inside his room after his bath. He was both meditating and warging at the same time. The lessons that he had learned ever since he found out he was a warg had helped in keeping his mind open for Greywind to see him. He could feel the wolf's presence in his mind as they both hunted together in the Wolf's wood alongside Summer and Shaggy Dog. All three wolves enjoyed the hunt and the time together. As he felt himself grow weary from the day he gave one final command before pulling out of Greywind's mind. Go south to King's Landing wait in the woods for me and find your sisters.
He could feel Greywind's howl before he felt the wolf heed his commands. Robb then pulled his mind out of the warg and headed towards his bed. The sounds of heavy rain and thunder filled his ears as he looked towards the sea beyond White Harbor. He knew that his time will come to set sail and see the capital for the first time. As he settled down to sleep he knew that one way or another things are about to change. And he was not about to let his father down. The plan was solid and hopefully he can gather enough information to present to Lord Tywin when his father asks for it. Just as his mind succumbed to darkness. He could feel the cold winds of winter coming through the window.
Soon winter was going to arrive and with it the danger that lurked further north.
THREE DAYS LATER
Even though they were late to leave the risk of chancing the storm was not worth the death that would have followed. Lord Manderly was right when it came to the storm. Already crew members from White Harbor were busy repairing the protective tower at the end of the natural bay that protects the city. The sea rocks that littered the exit were seen as a main tourist attraction as their ship left the port.
As promised by Lord Manderly at first high tide the ship Wolf's Crossing left port. Lord Stark sat at the stern of the ship next to the helmsman enjoying the sights with Robb and Shifu. The Wolf's Den stood strongly against the sky and the sea as the ocean pounded against it. The fortress prison stood strong as if waving them farewell. Though its outsides look derelict inside it is still as fortified as it was first built. Seals and Killer Whales seemed to have come to the side of the ships that left as if to bid them farewell on their journey south.
Lord Stark from his features was grim. The last time he took a journey south was to go to war. Today however it was that same feeling all over again. Robb could sense this but said nothing. Shifu also stood straight and tall her robes flowing behind her along with her long flowing hair. But he could clearly see the armored wrist guards and boots that she hid under her robes. The belt she wore was also needed to show that she was in fact part of Lord Stark's party not as a whore but as protection and an advisor.
As the sea allowed them to travel Robb could not help but feel a sense of adventure being so young. He had never felt like this since leaving Winterfell for his journey nearly a year ago. The ocean was totally different then the land and he was enjoying every second of it.
"It should take us three weeks to reach King's Landing m'lord. Are you sure you don't want to take the current south?" asked the Captain.
"No, if we go any faster then they will get suspicious. We take the slower route to ensure that we had journeyed far," Lord Stark replied and the man nodded. The captain then relayed orders to the rest of the crew. As they traveled into the open ocean the sea became a bit rougher but not overly so. Having been beaten back by the storm it was now calm and the winds were in their favor. So for now the Stark party had to do was wait it out till they reached the capital. Then the real games are going to begin.
TBC
A/N: Holy Shit! I have never thought of getting this far with how to transition from Winterfell to our next segment should take place. Then I saw the segment with the end of season six and thought why not? Well since I had not written anything for this chapter in a while I had to double check and sure enough I had made a HUGE error and had to correct it before uploading. Originally when I wrote this Robb was supposed to stay home. But when I reread the previous chapter I found out that I made it so Robb has to travel with his father south. So I had to quickly change it a bit without rewriting the whole chapter before posting. So as always sorry for the delay and please when you review no FLAMES, BASHINGS OR LORE MONGERS PLEASE! Thank you.
