Khary Ginger (Wasabi's little brother) is my favorite OC and I've known for forever that I wanted him to be friends with Megan, it's one thing that's like burned into my brain since I wrote a massive Christmas crossover with all my friends' OCs in 2020. I headcanon that they go to the same high school and click immediately. This story will have at least two chapters and as many sequels as I feel like writing. I have ideas. Karmi isn't in this fic but she will probably be in future fics!
Hiro stopped in his tracks and walked back towards the diner, making sure he wasn't seeing things. But no, his eyes did not deceive him, Khary Ginger and Megan Cruz were sharing a plate of french fries. The bell jingled as he came in and walked over. They glanced over at him and Megan waved. Hiro did not wave.
"What are you doing?"
"What?" Megan asked with a laugh.
"Since when have you two known each other? Why are you hanging out?"
"We're friends, Hiro, we go to the same school."
"I'm on my break," Khary said, pointing at his Joe's Diner uniform.
"Why do you care?" Megan asked as Khary scooted over so Hiro could sit down.
"I just didn't know you guys knew each other. You know this is Wasabi's brother, right?"
If Khary was uncomfortable that Hiro was talking about him like he wasn't there he did not reveal that discomfort.
"Yes, obviously? And Damon's brother, and Deborah and Aaron's son. What's your point?"
Khary caught on and chimed in, "Hiro and I were friends when we were younger. We kinda drifted apart, through no fault of our own. It's probably weird to see one of your old friends hang out with one of your new friends."
"Well," Megan said, hesitating a little, "You're here now, so we can all hang out as friends."
"For ten minutes before I have to go back to work," Khary said.
"Or, oh! We could hang out at my place soon. My dad likes you, Khary, he wouldn't mind."
"Does your dad not like me?" Hiro asked, almost offended.
"Frankly, you're on thin ice."
"That's fair."
"Ooh, I want to hear that story," Khary said with a laugh.
"No you don't," Hiro said.
"No, you don't," Megan echoed. Keeping the Big Hero 6 identities secret was especially important when it came to Wasabi's younger brother.
"Okay," Khary laughed.
"Anyway, I've got to get back to work, but let's start a group chat and plan to hang out later this week. I'll lie to my parents, it'll be fine."
Hiro got up so Khary could get back to work, and Megan stood up too.
"Walk with me, Hamada." They left the diner together.
"What did he mean, lie to his parents?"
"If you don't know it's not my place to tell you. But why were you so weird around Khary? Weirder than you normally are, Hiro."
"He was one of my first friends. I didn't know how to get back to that. But now you have the friendship I used to have with him."
"No, I don't. Hiro, you were kids, we're teenagers now. The friendship I have with him now is different than the friendship you had when you were kids. But now you get to build a new friendship with him. Just like you had to build a friendship with me, or Karmi, or the other heroes."
"How'd you two meet anyway?"
"I wrote about a play he was in for the school paper. He played Paris in Romeo and Juliet." Hiro knew he had read Romeo and Juliet but he did not want to admit that he had no idea who Paris was.
"I didn't know he was an actor."
"Well, then, you're in for a treat."
"What do you mean?"
"You clearly don't know him very well, which means you get the pleasure of getting to know him. That's the best part of friendship, Hiro."
"I remember," Hiro said with a smile, "Getting to know you was the best part of our friendship."
"It's not over yet. I didn't know you used to be friends with Khary, or I would have told you. So I guess we're still learning about each other."
"I'm looking forward to all of us hanging out."
"Me too. You guys are my best friends. My squad."
Hiro nodded and offered her a fist bump.
"Best friend squad." He didn't know if it would be that easy, but he was excited to find out.
