"It has been one week since the meteorite hit Acmetropolis Bay. As you can see behind me, they have already begun deploying the frame printers."
The camera zooms in on a group of construction workers dragging several white and glossy machines onto marked spots on a large black surface. The machines hover over the spots and begin to print out the frame for a skyscraper. They zoom back and forth, creating the structure with ease. The camera zooms out and back to the reporter.
"The building that used to stand here was an old one. One of the first buildings built during the great reset When it was built is unknown, but it is believed it was probably in 2488. Thanks to recent technological advances in the field of construction, most of our newer structures were not badly damaged. However, some of this city's historical buildings did get upgraded last year in case of such an advent, preserving them for future generations. Like the WB tower."
"Now speaking of the advent, why didn't the space force stop, or, for that matter, warn us of the meteorite before it hit?
Some are saying it may have been the fault of a group of young cadets"
A picture of a group of young astronauts is shown, one of whom is a tall, bronze-colored bunny who looks a bit like Ace.
"You can listen to our full investigation at 7:00. Now over to Mark for the damage report."
The screen switches to another reporter in the studio.
"Thank you, Jessie. Our numbers haven't changed much since the last update, but there are some slight changes. The number of missing persons is down by about 4 from our last report. The death toll has _"
"I've had enough news. How about you? ' Lexi said, turning off the TV.
"You don't think anyone we know was..." Ace held his tongue and didn't finish.
"Not as far as I know." "I think everybody is okay," Lexi answered her twin. "Hey, you want a drink while you're waiting?"
"Mm, maybe. What we got? I'd look myself, but you know, " Ace pointed to his bandaged eyes." "
"Don't worry, Ace, you'll have that off in no time," Lexi said, going to the fridge.
It was so nice to be up and about again. The last week had been a total blank. She had been out cold for a good chunk of it. The other half was spent with an awful headache. Lexi finally felt okay again. It was weird that her head actually felt way clearer than it had before the incident. "It's probably just in my imagination," she thought.
"OK, are you two ready to take your bandages off?"
Their mother asked as she came in with a pair of scissors and gauze.
Ace felt something small grab his hand. It startled him a little, but then he realized it was his little sister, Crystal.
It's so sad. I won't get to lead you around anymore. " She said, crawling onto his lap.
"You can still help Dad around." Lexi offered as her mom carefully removed her bandages from her head.
"Nah, he's got that stick and those glasses." Besides, it's funnier to lead Ace around. " Crystal laughed, grabbing Ace's ears.
"For you maybe." Ace said, pulling her off of his ears.
"It looks good." You can't tell anything even happened. " Lexi's mom said as she threw away the raps.
"You already passed your check-up. Passed? That doesn't make sense. Anyway, I think it's okay for you to go back to your normal activities. Her mother informed her.
"Sweet." I've been losing my mind being all cooped up. I can't wait to get out. Lexi exclaimed joyfully.
"Take it easy and let me know right away if anything changes." "Like your headache comes back or you feel weird or woozy."
"Sure thing, Mom," Lexi answered, giving her a thumbs up.
"Your turn, Ace. "You ready?"
Ace nodded his head, "Yes." He wasn't sure why, but he suddenly found it hard to speak. If he was honest with himself, he knew why. He was scared that when the bandages came off, his eyesight wouldn't be back. Ace took a deep breath and gave a big smile as if nothing was wrong.
"I'm nervous too." His mother whispered, hugging him gently. "But it's going to be okay no matter what."
"Crystal, let's go," Lexi said, grabbing her little sister by the paw.
"But I want to watch."
It's OK, Lexi, you guys can stay. " Ace smiled.
"Are you sure?" his mother said worriedly. "
"Yeah, let's do a countdown." Ace said, trying to lighten the mood.
"Oh yes! Mom, can I take the mask off him, please? " Crystal said, tugging on her mother's shirt.
"No."
"Aww! Why not? "
"Because you're too little." Now, are we ready? Miss Bunny said, picking up her little girl and sitting her on a chair.
"You bet," Ace said, feeling better.
"All right then. On three. " His mother said, ready to remove the bandages.
"Here we go," Lexi said, grabbing Ace's hand.
"One! Two! Three! They all shouted together.
Ace felt the air hit his face for the first time in a week, But it was still dark.
"Ace, you have to open your eyes." Their mother told him tenderly.
"Oh right." Ace said, embarrassed. He took a deep breath and...
"Whoa, that's bright!" Ace exclaimed as the first light he had seen all week hit his eyes.
"Oh thank goodness." His mother sighed in relief.
Ace's eyes adjusted to the light. He could see his sisters jumping up and down with excitement for him. Ace jumped up and joined them in the celebration.
"I can see! I CAN SEE!"
" You can see!" They all cheered for him.
His mother embraced them all lovingly. "I'm so glad my babies are all right."
After that, Ace got an in-house eye examination from his mother. He passed with a 20/20. However, he still had an eye doctor's appointment to go to as soon as they could fit him in.
Their mother had to go to work at the ER as soon as they were done. The place was overrun after the incident. It had calmed down a lot since then, but she was still needed there almost all the time.
"Sounds like Dad and Clover are back," Lexi said, her ears pricked.
"I don't hear anything." Ace said, looking around the living room like it was the most interesting thing in the world.
"Me either." Crystal said, following Ace around, pretending to be as in awe as him.
"Oh come on guys, don't tell me you can't hear that," Lexi said, going to the window to see if they were home yet.
Their father and little brother had gone out early that morning to help in a fundraising advent to help the displaced citizens.
Lexi didn't see them. But she swore she heard them talking. Lexi looked around, but they were nowhere in sight. Lexi kept thinking she heard them, but no one was there.
"Let's play eye spy," Crystal exclaimed happily.
"Yeah, I never thought I'd be this excited about playing this game." Ace laughed.
"OK, sounds fun." Lexi agreed.
Lexi got bored of the game rather quickly, but Ace and Crystal were very into it.
"Are you guys sure you didn't hear anything?"
"Maybe you're hearing ghosts." Crystal said, becoming interested in the idea.
"Ah' Don't mention ghosts," Lexi said, slapping at the air.
Her siblings laughed at her.
"Wait, I hear them now." Ace said, getting up.
"Me too." Crystal joined.
"Clover is going to try to get you again," Crystal said, opening the door a crack.
"It's not going to work this time," Lexi said smugly.
"He's coming." Crystal said, quickly shutting the door.
The siblings scrambled into their places, Ace trying to look natural and the other two hiding behind the sofa.
They watched the door open quietly. A little yellowish-brown bunny entered the room with a mischievous smile on his face.
He carefully snuck up on Ace, who was pretending not to see him. Keeping his head down
"BOO!" Ace yelled, popping his head up. Giving his little brother quite the fright.
"Ahh!" Clover screamed. "Hey, I was supposed to have scared you!" Clover said, laughing. His sisters were laughing too.
"I wonder how I managed that." Ace said smugly.
Clover paused for a moment, then he realized, "Hey, your eyes are working." He laughed and pointed at Ace's blue-greenish eyes. "Now you can look at cars with me again."
"Yep, sure can." Ace smiled at his brother's happy face.
"Hey Daddy' Ace got his eyes back!" Crystal exclaimed, running to a very tall gray and yellow bunny.
"He did? "Quick Ace, how many fingers am I holding up?" Their father said, wipping out two fingers in front of Lexi's face.
"Two, and that's Lexi, Dad. I'm over here. " Ace said, rubbing his head.
"Oops. Sorry. I really thought I had that one. " He said, turning to the sound of Ace's voice.
"It's too bad we won't get to wander around in the dark together anymore." Mr. Bunny joked.
"Dad, don't be silly. "You and I both know I was the only one wandering around," Ace laughed. "Thanks, Dad, for everything." " I don't know how you do it." Ace's voice was now soft and serious as he embraced his father. "Well, I don't really have a choice." His father chuckled, patting Ace's back.
The family sat and ate breakfast together while Clover and their father told of their morning outing. It wasn't long before Clover and Crystal ran off to play, leaving just the three of them.
"Good to see you two up and in good spirits." "You guys really scared your mother and me." Mr. Bunny said, picking up their dishes.
"Good to be up. I'm so happy to finally be able to think without my head trying to explode. " Lexi said, joining him.
"Oh, I got you kids something when I was in town." Mr. Bunny said, pulling something from his pocket and setting it on the table.
"A rock?" Ace said, a bit confused.
"It's a piece of that meteorite. Don't worry, I don't feel any sticky bits where aliens would crawl out of and suck our brains out, "Mr. Blake Bunny joked.
"Ew, gross," Lexi said, covering her mouth.
"Cool," Ace said, reaching to grab it.
BAZOOM!
Ace's eyes lit up and shot out a yellow laser beam the moment he picked it up. He quickly dropped it.As soon as he did, the laser stopped.
Lexi was dumbfounded, staring at Ace with her mouth gaping. Ace himself was really shaken up.
"What in Acme was that?" Mr. Bunny asked, not completely aware of what had just happened.
"The microwave just... did something weird ." Ace lied as he covered his head from the sprinklers overhead.
"Oh come on, I just got that thing!" Mr. Bunny complained.
"Come on, Lexi, let's go outside or something." Ace said, scooping up the meteorite in a fruit basket he had just dumped out. He covered it up with a towel and grabbed Lexi's hand and ran out.
"Good idea. I'll go call a repairman. " Mr. Bunny said, not wanting to stay in the room with the supposed haywire appliance.
"Can we have a cookie, Dad?" Crystal asked as Clover opened the door to the kitchen.
"NO! Not now. There is a laser-shooting microwave in there. Mr. Bunny said, grabbing Clover away from the door.
"Gee, you could have just said no." Crystal said, with her hands on her hips. She walked away insulted.
"I want to see the lasers," Clover said excitedly.
"I don't think so." Mr. Bunny said, locking the door. He scooped the little bunny up and got him away from the dangerous microwave.
Ace and Lexi had retreated to the garden on top of their partially underground home to sort out what had just happened.
"Did what I think just happened actually happen?" Lexi asked, still shaken up.
"If you mean me shooting lasers out of my eyes, then yes." Ace said, setting the basket on the ground and stepping away from it.
"Oh great. I'm not sure whether to be happy or not that it wasn't just in my head. " Lexi said, pulling her ears down. "Wait, is this in my head?" She whispered, wondering if she was just dreaming.
"I think that rock gave me superpowers!" Ace said, squatting down next to the basket, intrigued by the rock inside. "
"Lexi, you try touching it! He said this while picking up the rock with the cloth and shoving it in Lexi's face.
"No way, I'm not touching that thing," Lexi said, pushing it away.
"Come on, Lexi, don't you want superpowers?" Ace asked, trying to persuade her.
Ace unfolded the cloth and hesitantly touched the meteorite.
"Hu, nothing? ... whoa! Ace's eye shot out a fast beam of light. "Ah ha ha, wow! That's awesome! " Ace laughed.
"Ace, stop that! You're going to mess up Mom's garden. " Lexi said, grabbing the rock from Ace without thinking.
Lexi's eyes lit up with pink light. Ace immediately ducked for safety. A pink blast came from Lexi's forehead.
"What the heck?" Lexi said, dropping the stone in shock.
"I think we should find somewhere else to figure this out." Ace said, looking at the now charred garden shed.
"You're right. Let's go. " Lexi said, grabbing Ace's hand.
She dragged him as fast as she could out of the garden and onto his bike. Ace ran back to get the meteorite. He was just barely able to avoid being seen by a nosy neighbor coming to see what all the noise was about.
The twins' road down to the cove, away from their place and out of sight of most of their neighbors.
"Did you see that? I blasted something out of my brain! " Lexi exclaimed. "Oo! Let me touch it again. " She said, reaching out for the rock in Ace's basket.
"Sure," Ace said, tossing her the rock.
A small blast came from her head, hitting a large rock on the shore.
"My turn," Ace said, picking the meteorite up.
Nothing happened. "Huh, that's weird. It's not working now. " Ace said, tapping on the rock.
"Let me see," Lexi said, grabbing it from him.
Nothing happened.
"Try it without it," Lexi suggested.
"Yeah, good idea," Ace said.
Ace took a deep breath and tried hard to make it happen. Nothing.
Lexi tried next. The same result.
"I guess it was just a one-time thing," Lexi said, scratching her chin.
"We must have used up all its juice." Ace said, shaking the rock in hopes that it would do something.
"It's probably for the best," Lexi said, hopping on the bike, ready to go home.
"Mmm." Ace tossed the thing back in the basket and threw it in his bike's storage compartment. "I'm going to try something." Ace said, sitting down in a meditation pose.
"Oh boy. This could take a while. " Lexi said, rolling her eyes.
Ace tried to concentrate on the feelings he felt with the power. He searched deep within himself, or at least deeper than he had in other meditation sessions he had attempted.
He definitely felt something different within himself. He couldn't seem to pinpoint it. In his mind's eye, he began to conjure the image of the power. It was a warm and bright yellow light that swirled around inside him.
He felt it the strongest in his head. He imagined the yellow light coming out of his eyes. "Yes, I'm prepared." As he rose to his feet, his eyes remained closed.
With a deep breath and a count to three, he opened his eyes, willing the lasers with all his might.
BIZZOOM!
It's working! " Ace yelled as a steady stream of yellow light blasted out of his eyes.
"Woo hoo!" Lexi cheered. "You can turn it off now," Lexi said, hopping off the bike when Ace contented to shoot the laser beam.
"I can't," Ace said, nearly falling over.
Rocks and logs were blasted into tiny pieces as Ace moved around in a panic.
Lexi leaped over to her brother. "Watch it!" Lexi yelled as she flipped over the laser beam. She was able to grab Ace and directed his gaze into the sea, where he couldn't hurt anything.
"Calm down, Ace!" She yelled, sitting there still fighting the bunny down.
I'm trying! Ace said, gripping his head tightly.
"Try harder!" Lexi yelled, holding onto Ace.
"Maybe if you'd stop yelling I could!"
I'm sorry! I can't help it! " Lexi panicked.
"I can't take this much longer." Ace yelled as the whole cove was covered in steam from his laser beam.
"Help! Someone help, please! " Alexa screamed at the top of her lungs. Her cry carried a sonic boom with it.
But it didn't seem to matter how loud she yelled. There wasn't anyone there to hear it or so it seemed.
Through the mist, she saw a yellow light and not that of the laser that threatened them. It was a floating woman. She was holding some kind of wand or staff with her. Lexi couldn't really make it out with all the steam.
"Cease! The stranger yelled, raising the object into the air.
Lexi ducked down, covering as much of Ace as she could without being hit by the laser.
"Hey... it stopped." Ace panted, looking up to see the mysterious yellow woman.
"Did you do that?" Lexi asked, not taking her arms away from her brother.
"I am Queen Zadavia, young ones. Yes, it was I who helped you. " The stranger said, landing on the ground before them.
How'd you do that? Could you teach me? " Ace asked while his sister was helping him up.
"In time, I shall train all of you how to control your powers as well as use them to protect this world from the evils that have been set loose upon it." The queen answered him.
"However, you will need to find the others before we can begin." She wipped her cape around her, clearing the cove of the steam. The two could now see her fully.
She was a tall, thin woman. Her whole body was a light yellow color that had a slight glow to it. She was covered by a dark red cloak with a hood over her head.
She had lighter yellow markings on her face that didn't seem to be any kind of tattoo. Her eyes were an unnatural color, with star-like pupils. The likelihood of her being an alien was apparent to the twins.
At the same time, a young road runner was discovering something incredible for himself in a small town just outside of Acmetropolis.
