Tally felt nervous eating while Sarah watched and drank her tea, for once she wasn't drinking alcohol which Tally was sure the biddies livers were happy about.
"Do you miss food?" Tally took a bite of her strawberry cheesecake.
Sarah looked at her tea and then back to Tally as she pondered it, "I used to think it was overrated, but seeing how much you enjoy it, I think I rather miss food. But it's been so long I can't even remember what it was I ate last."
Tally smiled, "There's so much you haven't gotten a chance to try, I'm sure you'd love cheesecake! Do you think if we find a way for you to not need biddies anymore that you'll be able to eat again?"
"It's possible, although I don't know how my body will react to suddenly eating food after having not needed it for so long...I, let me try something," Sarah closed her eyes and stretched out her link to Tally, feeling her, trying to feel what she feels, "Do you feel me?"
Tally just stared at her with wide eyes and nodded, "Like I've never felt you before."
Sarah smiled, "Now take a bite of your cheesecake."
Tally looked at her overwhelmed but did what was asked of her so she took a bite of the cheesecake never breaking eye contact with Sarah. She felt the creaminess mixed in with the strawberries and the crust and it made her mouth water and then she swallowed it. She just stared at Sarah for a minute, noticing the tears in her eyes falling down her cheeks.
Sarah choked out a happy sob and quickly wiped her eyes, "You're right, I do think I like cheesecake, at least the taste of it through you."
Tally could feel her joy and her confusion and her wonder, "You could taste what I was tasting?"
"I didn't think it was possible, it was just a hunch I didn't think it'd work, but yes I tasted it through you. I also felt your joy from eating it," Sarah smiled and forced the connection back.
Tally wanted to cry, "There's so much you haven't been able to experience. I hope one day you can be free, you deserve to live your life, Sarah."
"With you? I hope."
Tally tried to keep from letting out a sob but failed, "If you'll still have me?"
"Always. You're stuck with me."
Tally smiled and they just stared at each other for a moment until they were interrupted and remembered that they definitely weren't alone.
"This is absolutely devastating to witness," Abigail just shook her head from the table beside them.
Raelle tried to force a smile back but failed, "You guys are too cute!"
The biddies all nodded in agreement and Alder just rolled her eyes and went back to sipping her tea. Once they all finished their meals Abigail and Raelle excused themselves, Tally running after them.
"Aren't you staying with your wife tonight?" Raelle raised an eyebrow at her.
Tally blushed, "Well, I guess this is our honeymoon night, so I am. I just wanted to grab some clothes. I'm not ditching you guys for her, you know? I'll split my nights between the two of you."
Abigail laughed, "Geez, Tal, you make it sound like you're a child splitting their time between two divorced parents."
"For real, Tally, we are happy for you if you're happy. And she is your wife now, so staying with her is obvious, but if you still want to share the bunk we're okay with that too. I mean who knows you two may get into a fight and somebody will be in the doghouse and you'll need somewhere to sleep," Raelle laughed at the thought of it.
"Just please show up for classes, I don't need my mom breathing down my back more than usual," Abigail sighed.
"Don't worry guys, we already discussed this with your mom by the way, as long as our relationship and my helping her with finding a way to not need her biddies doesn't interfere with war college there won't be any problems," Tally brought them both in for a hug.
"Maybe someday you guys can have a normal wedding, then I can be your maid of honor," Raelle snorted.
"Hey, what about me shitbird?" Abigail smacked her across the shoulder.
"Oh, my goddess, you two are children. You can both be my maids of honor if I ever have an actual wedding. Now come on, let's get going, I mustn't keep the Mrs. waiting," Tally laughed and shot a glance back at Sarah who only smiled while lugging the painting of herself under her arm.
Once back to the dorm Tally quickly stuffed a bag with clothes, her toothbrush, and she grabbed one of her colorful mandala's she hung on the wall to hang in Sarah's bedroom.
Raelle cleared her throat, "Hey, Tal, I know this isn't much but I want you to take this," Raelle handed her her dreamcatcher.
"What, no Raelle, this is yours!"
"It's fine, I'll just get another one when I go back to the Cession, consider it a wedding gift," Raelle looked at it fondly.
Tally took it teary eyed and put it in her bag, "Thanks, Rae, I hope it'll keep the nightmares away."
"Nightmares?"
"I, these aren't like the ones with her memories, these are obviously caused by my guilt over everything. Don't worry she has to constantly reassure me that I have nothing to feel guilty about but I can't help it," Tally zipped up the bag and flung it over her shoulder.
"We're always here for you if you want to talk and I guess her too? That's weird to say, it's going to take some getting used to, I don't even know what we're supposed to call her anymore."
Abigail popped up from the bed, "Yeah, do we call you Mrs. Alder now?"
Tally shook her head and laughed, "Guys, it isn't even in legal writing yet, that I know of. She might have handled that while she was in town today getting our rings, well actually wouldn't I need to sign something to make it legal? I don't even know."
Abigail just patted her on her confused little head, "There, there, Mrs. Alder. Who needs legal paperwork, you guys are married regardless. You don't need some document telling you you two love each other and are wifies."
"Aww, Abs, you're such a hopeless romantic deep down."
Abigail rolled her eyes, "And on that note, I think your wife is calling."
Before Tally could leave, Raelle spoke up, "Hey, Tal?"
Tally paused with her hand on the doorknob, "Yeah?"
"Rock her world!"
Tally blushed, "Oh, my goddess, you guys!" Tally flung the door open and ignored the laughter behind her.
It was dark out by the time she made it outside and she just stopped and took a moment to take everything in. So much had happened in the last 24 hours and she just needed a moment of calm, staring at the sky she saw a shooting star and closed her eyes and made a wish.
"What are you wishing for?"
She was startled by Sarah's voice making her jump, "Okay, you really need to work on your stealth mode. You almost gave me a heart attack."
Alder smiled, her hair down just like how Tally liked it, "Sorry, as you can see I don't have seven women trailing behind me at the moment to make my presence known."
Tally's eyebrows knitted together at that, "Yeah, how? I thought you couldn't go anywhere without them?"
"There's usually a certain distance I can go without them, although it weakens me to a degree the further away from them I get. I sent them to bed and I was going to wait for you but felt the need to meet you halfway. But the further from them I got it never felt like I had left, I don't quite understand. Perhaps it has something to do with our bond?"
Tally smiled back at her as she pulled her bag over her shoulder, "I suspect there's going to be a lot of firsts with us, isn't there?"
Sarah held her hand out for Tally to take, "I suppose there will be, I'm looking forward to them."
Taking her hand they made their walk to Sarah's little room in silence until Tally remembered her earlier question, "I wished for your happiness. I wished for you to be able to lay your burden's down so you wouldn't have to carry them anymore."
They paused outside her bedroom door, Sarah's eyes wide with surprise, she'd never heard anyone bless her with such sincere words before.
"Won't telling me your wish make it not come true now?"
Tally smirked with confidence, "It's too late now, that star took my wish far far away, so it doesn't know I told you. You, Sarah Alder will be happy."
Sarah reached out a shaky hand and tilted her chin up, "What if I'm already happy?"
Tally gulped as soon as her piercing blue eyes met hers, "Then-then it's already working and you'll be more happy than you know what to do with."
Sarah felt her sincerity and it spurred her forward to crash their mouths together, pushing all of her happiness and appreciation through their connection which made Tally's knees buckle causing Sarah to wrap her up in her arms. Tally's fingers weaved their way through Sarah's tousled hair which made Tally whimper.
Sarah smiled pulling back, "Is my hair down that much of a turn on for you, Craven?"
Tally bit her lip and sighed, too intoxicated by their kiss to filter herself, "I'm always turned on by you."
Sarah laughed as the realization of what she had said dawned on Tally who turned so red she almost matched her hair. Sarah took pity on her and placed a kiss on her forehead, then opened the door to her room.
Tally walked in and set her bag down on the chair in the corner, unzipping it and taking out the dreamcatcher she nervously held it up, "Um, Raelle gave this to me, she said to consider it a wedding gift. She thought it'd help keep the nightmares away. But you don't need to hang it or anything, I don't want it to clash with your personal space."
"Tally, this is your space now too, if you want it to be. This has indeed been my space for a very long time but I am more than happy to fill it up with bits of you and make it ours. Although I hope that one day perhaps, we can have an actual house. If that's what you want?" Sarah looked shy as those words came out of her mouth.
Tally was amazed to have such a privilege as to see all these different emotions play out across the ex-general's face, she wondered how many people ever had such a chance to witness them. Tally cupped her cheek and smiled brighter than the sun, "You want a house? I mean, I want a house so it'd be nice to want a house together. I know we're not conventional, we really did almost kill each other not too long ago and then now here we are married. And and you're you and I'm well me and you're way out of my league and…."
"Tally, breath. I think we're both in states of needing constant reassurance from each other about our feelings. So unlike before, communication is going to have to be a must for us. Whether you're adorably rambling such as you were or if I am having a hard time trying to find the right words to say because I have always kept things to myself, so communicating my feelings will be hard. This is new for me, being so vulnerable," Sarah looked her in the eyes as she spoke trying to communicate her sincerity of what she was saying.
"Oh, wow, we're a couple of idiots in love aren't we?"
Sarah laughed and nodded as she took the dreamcatcher from Tally and hung it on the corner of the frame of the stolen Alder painting from earlier.
"You hung it up!?" Tally smiled as she followed her over to the painting.
"Well, you did say it was your favorite."
Tally blushed, "Well, I mean, any painting with you in them is my favorite and I'll steal them all if I have to. Oh, one more thing," Tally went back over to her bag and pulled out one of her mandala's, "I uh, I had a few of these hanging in my room, I made them back when I lived in NorCal. I thought maybe you might like one?"
Sarah took it and marveled at its colors, "This is beautiful Tally, I can see your essence in it, it's bright just like you." Sarah searched for a push pin and pinned it to the wall next to the painting, she took a step back and marveled at the three new objects in her room that had remained unchanging.
"Look at you Tally Craven, already filling my void with bits of you. All these years, very few things stuck, there was always this void I felt and nothing could fill it. But here you are, sticking."
Tears filled Tally's eyes, "I take it that's a good thing?"
Sarah smiled at her, "A very good thing," taking a deep breath to calm her nerves. She swung her coat off and set it on the chair next to Tally's bag, "How would you like to take a bath with me?"
Tally nodded eagerly, "Yes, yes, bath's are good."
Sarah laughed and led her to the bathroom, yes, Tally had a feeling this was going to be a very very good bath.
