Sorry, it's been a while. Going through this pre-written stuff is stressing me out a bit. I do hope you enjoy the rest. 4-5 Chapters are left depending how I break it up.
Luke stops moving in shock as the blood in his veins freezes.
"From where, how..." Luke just stutters out in panic that he might have shot Andy.
"Sit down," Sam sounds methodical and professional. Sam disappears briefly and then returns with several files.
"Here, as I said, I had ballistics send the report to me," he points to the charts. "It wasn't your weapon, but one assigned to the division nonetheless."
Luke looks at the documents and can't help but take a deep breath.
But the relief is short-lived when he realizes that someone with access to their gun cabinet was out there shooting at Andy, and Noelle.
"Could you..." "Find out who had the gun?" Sam finishes the sentence while Luke is still sitting in his chair, shaking slightly.
For everything he holds sacred about his job, if he finds out who did it, he can't guarantee anything.
"No, but Frank will look into that himself," Sam's voice drifts to his ear.
Luke pushes himself off the chair and stands up with a jerk.
"I have to get out of here. I... can you tell Frank I'm working from home?"
Sam nods understandingly. "Give our regards to McNally and tell her to get well soon,"
The two men exchange nods one more time and after a trip to his office to retrieve his bag, Luke heads home.
At the moment he just wants to hug Andy. Or wrap her in bubble wrap and cotton balls.
Andy slept a little at home thanks to the pills, which really make you tired, but she feels so useless. That's why she's been gritting her teeth for a while now and cleaning the kitchen and living area as best she can to the pounding of feel-good music.
She also checks the refrigerator and makes a small list of things that Luke still has to get in the next few days.
And that's exactly how Luke finds his girlfriend. Dancing happily and singing to the song blaring from the system at the top of your lungs. She doesn't hear him come in at all or even slam the door.
Only when Luke turns off the stereo does Andy turn to him with a surprised expression on her face.
"Hey, is it that late already?" she laughs at him. "I didn't hear you come in."
"No wonder, with the volume. Are you also deaf," he laughs back and pulls her into his arms to press a kiss on her cheek.
Luke enjoys the closeness and yes, the desire to wrap her in cotton wool or even better Kevlar grows again immediately.
Andy must have felt the change, just a slight stiffening in his stature, and gently presses her hand against his upper body to be able to look at Luke's face. "What's wrong?"
Her voice is filled with concern and Andy carefully leads Luke to the sofa. There she sits on his lap and puts her arms around his neck again.
Luke looks down briefly and then gently runs his fingers over her shoulder.
"The bullet came from a police-issued gun," he sighs, looking apologetic.
Andy grabs his chin right away.
"It doesn't matter! It was chaos. It can happen!" she says energetically and her eyes sparkle.
"No," Luke gets a little louder and shakes his head. "That can't happen! And no one knows who had the gun," he says the second part quietly and then Andy is taken aback too.
"How can no one know who had the gun? It was only Noelle, you, Sam, and I at the scene. Was it one of our guns?" Andy looks at him confused.
"No, it was a free gun, and the documentation is incomplete or missing or... oh I don't know either. I just had to come to see you, I couldn't," Luke hastily murmurs and Andy puts her good arm around his waist and lays her head on his heart.
"I'm okay, everything's okay," she murmurs softly while Luke wraps his arms around her, almost clinging to her for support.
"I can't lose you," he whispers into her hair only to pull away with a jerk.
Now he repeats it again, a little more forcefully: "I can't lose you."
Luke searches Andy's gaze and it doesn't matter what else he could think up. That moment is just when he has to get it out.
Andy stands petrified in front of the sofa and Luke takes her hand in his.
"I could try to do a big production but that wouldn't be us right now. I love you, Andy McNally, more than anything. We live here together. We own the house together. We already share everything and yes, I can only repeat it: I can't lose you."
Andy's head needs a moment to realize where Luke wants to go as he slowly gets on his knees. As fast as her shoulder will allow, she slides towards the ground and simply kisses him on the mouth.
"You'll never lose me," she whispers before kissing Luke deeply again.
Without a word, Luke pulls Andy's hand and leads her into the bedroom. He gently turns her into his arms and then lays her down on the bed just as light as a feather.
Andy grimaces slightly as Luke gets up again to go to his bedside table, but when he comes back with a small box, she has to smile.
When Andy sees the ring, her good arm goes straight to her necklace. It touches her deeply that Luke must have thought like that.
He grabs her hand and awkwardly puts the ring on her before Andy kisses him again stormily and determinedly.
Some time later, they are snuggled up under the covers, trying to get their pulses back to normal when Luke's cell phone bursts his bubble.
A little unnerved, he grabs the device, and luckily he looks at the name on the display before he says "What's up?" answers.
Andy watches his expression carefully and she sees it change from shock to anger and fear, almost panic.
"I see. I'll be back as soon as I can," Luke says in a slightly shaky voice before turning to Andy with a sad look.
"I have to get back to in,"
Andy sits up slightly, adjusting the pillows behind her. "You should be at work anyway," she nods understandingly, then looks back down at her new ring. She leans in impulsively again. "We can keep partying tonight," she whispers against his lips before changing the angle and kissing the spot right under his ear.
"You should take a shower first though," she laughs with a slap on his cheek.
Andy immediately notices the mischievous look and laughingly shakes his head. "You should take a quick shower and take a deep breath... if I come with you, neither of those things will happen," then she points to her shoulder and Luke rolls his eyes.
10 minutes and one or two goodbye kisses later, Luke is back in the car. This case must finally come to an end. But wherever he looks, he finds new trouble. What would that mean for all of them in the end?
