When Luke arrives at The Division, it's almost eerily empty and quiet. Most vehicles appear to be out on the street. Inside, too, it's almost deserted, only in Frank's office can he spot a few people.
Without passing through his office, Luke heads straight upstairs. He knocks on the glass to Frank's office and lets his gaze wander over those present. Frank, Sam, Noelle, and Oliver, as well as Jerry and, to his amazement, Martin without the handcuffs. On the other side of the room, the prosecutor seems to be in a disagreement with the superintendent.
"Ah, come on in Callaghan. Now we're complete," the prosecutor greets him briefly and then points to the whiteboard.
"Thanks to Mr. Riggs' cooperation here, we were able to have the following operation prepared and approved. We will need all of your cooperation,"
Luke continues listening but turns his head and catches Sam's eye. He would like to ask what led to this insight in Martin.
Following the meeting, Frank orders all the patrols back. They would all get new instructions and hopefully make the mission possible.
Luke briefly retreats to his office to collect himself. His hands are shaking slightly. He's just sat down when Noelle pokes her head in.
"So you were at home?" she asks with a grin on her face.
Luke rolls his eyes slightly, but still politely answers, "Yes," and then tilts his head.
"Andy is fit again?" Noelle's eyes twinkle dangerously and Luke can't help but cross his arms in front of his body.
"Yes, so far so good. The shoulder still hurts when she makes a wrong move," he replies cautiously.
Noelle examines him closely again and says flippantly. "You should button your shirt all the way before you come back. We are starting the briefing by the way,"
The shirt is straightened with a quick hand and any reference to his private life is safely hidden.
During the briefing, Luke hears for the first time that almost every division in town has a gun or two missing from the gun lockers.
Martin must have given them a little help and put them on the track of a civilian employee who had gone to the police academy but hadn't made it onto the force.
How he then worked his way up to become a civilian employee responsible for all armories is beyond Luke's comprehension. The courts will sort that out.
Martin gave them a long list of hiding spots and locations. These must all be checked and emptied as inconspicuously as possible.
The rookies would do that. Noelle, Oliver and Sam, together with Jerry, Jo and Luke, had agreed to set a trap for the puppet master and thus convict him.
Frank had scheduled firearms qualification checks for all of them at short notice. 6 police officers, all of whom don't need their service gun but a random one from the gun cabinet. Each one different.
This entails an automatic inspection and until now no one knew they knew a weapon was missing. The superintendent had kindly withheld that.
Luke smiles as they wait and bustle at their tables and document the rookies' finds. Soon this nightmare would be over and the guy responsible for all of this would be behind bars.
When Diaz gives the signal and reports the suspect has arrived, Luke's tension skyrockets. He slowly gets up and wipes his sweaty hands on his pants, or at least tries to.
He takes a deep breath as Sam and Jerry appear in the door. The three nod to each other and then head towards the shooting range.
Frank can see the armory on a monitor from his office. They had installed the camera only today, precisely for this purpose. They had to know what the guy was doing now.
But what happened next, no one could have predicted.
The clerk opens all cabinets and swaps all but one weapon. The gun that hit Andy still appears to be around. Out on the street.
Frank is almost out of breath and his fist hits his table with such force that the monitor wobbles dangerously as the tabletop trembles.
How could it be that the division had so many wrong weapons? Or what were the weapons that were exchanged now?
The man had declared them as weapons to be cleaned. He routinely took some with him, but that was documented. Or so they thought.
Now their secret weapon came into play. Gail Peck.
The name Peck alone elicited respect from everyone, including this scoundrel, oddly enough. Gail exchanged a few words with him on the way to the shooting range and he left his transport box in the armory.
Epstein's job was to check and document the weapons and then run them through the computer.
After 2 guns, Dov looks straight into the camera and shakes his head. Nothing keeps Frank in his office anymore.
"What is Epstein?" he asks harshly as he gets in the door.
"These are dummies. If we needed any, we would have been dead,"
Frank goes straight to the shooting range and has Gail hand over her handcuffs. For what is probably the first time, Peck doesn't object and Frank immediately arrests the man.
After he has been placed in a cell, the management meets in Frank's office for a briefing.
Luke would love to take his frustration out on Martin or any of those assholes, but so far they still hadn't been able to find the man behind them, the guy pulling the strings.
The next step was to interrogate the now-arrested man and try to get him to roll on his contacts.
Frank nods to Jerry.
"Okay, boss. I'm trying my best," he replies, straightening his purple tie. Jerry had always had a unique taste in fashion and lived out his individuality as a detective.
Frank dismisses everyone from his office shortly thereafter, but motions for Luke to stay.
"How are you and McNally dealing with the situation?" he then asks the question Luke was expecting.
"We're fine. I mean Andy has a pain in his shoulder of course and I'd like to strangle someone but we're fine." Luke collects himself for a little moment. He should tell Frank now, right?
He looks down briefly and then back to his boss' attentive smile. "We've also been engaged since today,"
Frank looks irritated for a moment, but then holds out his hand. "Congratulations,"
"Thanks, you're the first we tell."
The two exchange a few more words and now it's abundantly clear that Luke needs to withdraw from the case.
Basically, they would have to hand over the rest of the processing completely and soon internal affairs would be starting their own investigation too.
Frank promises that he'll put in a good word for Andy and Luke when the new assignments come, but Luke shakes his head.
"Andy is supposed to stay with her friends. I'll transfer. Homicide has been courting me for a while."
"It's a shame that we're going to lose you sooner or later, but I understand. Good luck."
Again Frank is professional and friendly at the same time and Luke can honestly say he's lucky to have such a good boss.
After his conversation with Frank, Luke heads back home. From the car he calls Andy and asks what he should bring to eat.
The joyful tone in her voice makes him smile too. Luke still can't believe how lucky he is right now.
