It's 12am on Saturday morning and Tori is watching tv in the living room. She couldn't sleep and figured she might as well watch some tv until she feels tired enough to sleep. Tori's parents are away on business and won't be back for a week and Trina is spending the night at her friend's house. Leaving the house all to Tori until Sunday when Trina comes back home.
Tori's stomach rumbles about twenty minutes into watching the movie that's playing on the screen and during a commercial she gets up to make herself some popcorn and grab a drink. It takes her only a few minutes to make the popcorn, grab her drink and sit back down on the couch. She's about to get comfortable again when the doorbell rings.
She picks her phone up from beside her to check the time, it reads 12:30. She's in the middle of asking herself who could possibly be at her door this late at night when the doorbell rings again. She takes the popcorn off her lap and places it on the table before getting up and walking over to the door.
She pulls it open and is about to give the person on the other side of the door a piece of her mind but stops when she takes in the person standing in front of her. She wants to be mad but she can't bring herself to be when she's looking at the girl she's been crushing on for a couple weeks now.
Jade stands there for a minute before snapping her fingers in Tori's face. "Are you done staring at me?" she asks, breaking Tori out of her thoughts.
Tori is immediately on defense, "I wasn't staring" she denies quickly. A little too quickly if the smirk that appears on Jade's face is anything to go by.
Jade moves past Tori and into the house, "mmm, sure you weren't."
Tori closes the door and turns to face Jade, "I didn't say that you could come in."
Jade ignores her comment and makes herself comfortable on the couch Tori was just occupying. "Oh, fresh popcorn. How did you know?"
Tori watches as Jade pops some of Tori's movie night snack into her mouth and sits on the other end of the couch. "What are you even doing here?"
Jade looks over at her and there's this look on her face, one Tori hasn't seen before. When Jade turns away, the look is gone and she keeps her focus on the tv as she says, "I know."
Tori scrunches her nose in confusion, "I'm sorry, you know what?" she asks before grabbing her glass and putting it to her lips.
Jade takes a deep breath, "I know you have a crush on me."
Tori chokes on her drink and quickly, she feels a warm body beside her and Jade's hand is patting her on the back. When the choking finally stops, Jade removes her hand and puts a bit of space between them on the couch.
A few minutes go by before Tori replies to what Jade said before she started choking. She's playing with her fingers and not making eye contact when she lies to Jade. "I don't have a crush on you. I don't know where you heard that, but it's not true."
Jade sighs and watches Tori carefully, "nobody told me anything Vega. I can tell when someone has a crush on me."
"Well, you're wrong, okay. I don't like girls like that." Tori gets up and makes her way into the kitchen, she needs some room to breathe because this is too much.
She can't believe she's having this conversation. She can't believe Jade found out. She'd been so careful, but that doesn't matter anymore, she needs to think quickly in order to convince Jade she doesn't have feelings for her. She's dating Beck and Tori would never want to break them up, she isn't that kind of girl.
Tori is so lost in her thoughts that she doesn't hear the sound of Jade following behind her until it's too late. Tori turns around from looking into the fridge and is scared half to death when she's face to face with Jade.
She puts her hand over her heart, "oh my gosh, what the heck is wrong with you?" she asks.
Jade rolls her eyes, "stop trying to change the subject. You know it's not going to work."
Tori rolls her eyes and crosses her arms over her chest, "what even makes you think I like you that way?"
Jade is standing less than a foot away and though Tori tries really hard not to, her eyes fall from Jade's blue eyes to her lips. Jade catches the movement and purposely bites her lip. Jade is so close she can hear the hitch in Tori's breath. And when she does, she moves back a couple steps to put some space between them.
"I'd say that's proof enough, wouldn't you?" Jade doesn't wait for an answer before continuing, "but since you'll probably try to make up some excuse about what just happened, what about all the other times you've stared at my lips."
Jade licks her lip quickly, drawing Tori's attention there again. "How do you explain the way your eyes seem to follow me when I walk into or out of a room? How about the way you look at me when you don't think I'm paying attention? I know that look, Tori. I've seen it enough times to know its desire. It's the same way you're looking at me right now."
Tori wants to say something, anything but it's so hard to think when those blue eyes are looking at her like she can see into her soul. How is she supposed to respond to such comments, no matter how accurate they are? Thinking back, maybe she wasn't as discrete as she thought she was, but how could she be? Jade is gorgeous and that much is obvious.
How is she supposed to deny the truth when it's so clear she's been caught. She supposes she can't, not anymore. Oh, how she wishes her feelings hadn't been exposed, it's scary to be vulnerable like this. And if that wasn't enough, Jade still isn't done.
"How about when you tried to set Beck up with Meredith while he and I were broken up. Did you do that because you didn't want us together? Because you wanted to be with me instead?"
The only thing that Tori can process right now is the part about her trying to set Beck up on a date with Meredith. She can't shake how it sort of feels like an accusation on Jade's part. She doesn't like it and before she can stop herself and think about what she's saying, the words are already out of her mouth, "I would never do something like that, I didn't even like you back then."
Tori's eyes go wide at her confession and Jade raises a pierced eyebrow at her, "I didn't expect you to admit it so quickly, but the evidence is hard to deny."
Tori paces back and forth with her arms crossed over her chest. Her eyes are cast downward, not making eye contact with Jade and she's chewing on her lip. Jade jumps up onto the counter and lets Tori pace for a few minutes until she gets annoyed.
"Would you stop pacing already?" Tori stops immediately and snaps her head toward Jade. The look on Tori's face makes her sigh again. Her eyes are wide again and she's rubbing her hand up and down her arms.
Jade furrows her eyebrows, "why do you look so freaked out?" She jumps off the counter and makes her way back over to Tori but as she starts to approach, Tori walks back over to the couch. She throws her hands up and lets them fall back down. "Why are you acting so weird all of a sudden? You like me, what's the big deal?"
Something in Tori snaps and before she can make it back to the couch closest to the door with her popcorn on it, she stops. She puts her hand on the back of the couch and squeezes. "What's the big deal?" She asks rhetorically, "the big deal is I like you and you found out. Then, you came over to my house, in the middle of the night, to confront me about it."
Jade yet again follows after Tori, except she sits on the second couch with her feet up on the coffee table, and snorts in exasperation, "I'd hardly call 12:30 the middle of the night Vega."
Tori makes it the rest of the way to the couch and sits down. Rolling her eyes and ignoring Jade's rudeness, she continues. "There was no warning, I had no time to prepare for this. Maybe I wanted to tell you on my own." She picks up the tv remote and pretends to be interested in changing the channel when she whispers, "or maybe I wasn't going to tell you at all."
Jade hears her though and unfortunately Tori misses the way Jade's expression softens at her words. Jade frowns and quickly stands up. Tori hears movement and looks in her direction to catch Jade walking into the kitchen.
She hesitates but asks, "what are you doing?"
Jade exits the kitchen with her purse hanging on her shoulder and walks toward the door. "I heard what you said and it's obvious that you don't wanna have this conversation." Tori looks like she might object but Jade glares at her and Tori stops. "So I'm leaving and going home," she answers simply before reaching the door and grabbing the handle.
But before she can actually leave, Tori pipes up. "Jade, please don't tell-"
Jade lets go of the handle and whips around to face her quickly. Her eyes are narrowed and her arms are crossed over her chest. One foot is extended out in front of her and she's tapping it against the floor rapidly. She practically growls out her next words, "don't what Vega?"
She uncrosses her arms and clenches her fist at her sides, "I wouldn't even think of outing someone. And you'd know that if you knew literally anything about me." Jade's jaw clenches and her eyes go dark, "how you even have the guts to assume I'd tell anyone about your feelings for me tells me exactly what kind of a person you think I am. And if that's what having feelings for me means to you, I'll gladly do whatever it takes to rid you of them, for both our sakes."
And that's the last thing Jade says before she turns her back to Tori, grabs the handle and walks out the door. Slamming it shut loudly behind her.
Tori sits on the couch in silence. She's stunned and her mind is racing a mile a minute. The only thought in Tori's mind is, how did everything go bad so fast?
Karma has always been a bitch to her so how could she think that this time would be any different than all the other times.
Monday starts out the same as every other school day. She drives to school with Trina and they go their separate ways once they're in the building. Tori stops at her locker to put away the books she doesn't need and grab the ones she needs. After she grabs what she needs and puts them into her bag, she turns to her left and looks in the direction of Jade's locker. When she doesn't see her, she almost feels relieved. Except, her stomach is turning and she has this bad feeling that things are only going to get worse.
With how things ended between them the other night, Tori doesn't know exactly what went wrong, but she knows based on how Jade reacted yesterday, she's crossed some sort of a line. Out of all the arguments they've had since they've known each other, she's never seen Jade like that before.
She tries to push it out of her mind but it doesn't seem to work. When Tori rounds the corner to go to her first period class she spots Jade. Before thinking much of it, Tori walks up to Jade and takes her wrist and pulls her gently toward the janitor's closet.
Due to the shock of not having seen Tori Jade doesn't start to fight back until it's too late. Once Jade and Tori are inside the closet Tori stands in front of the door.
"Move" Jade demands while trying to get Tori out of the way of the door.
"No," Tori replies softly.
Jade crosses her hands over her chest. "No?" Jade questions.
"No," Tori repeats firmly. "I'm not letting you go anywhere until we talk about what happened on the weekend. I'm not going to spend my whole day feeling like crap because of what transpired between us. I don't know exactly what happened but I'm not leaving it like this."
Jade rolls her eyes at Tori. "I'm too busy for this."
Tori isn't impressed with Jade or her attitude but she's not going to let it get to her. "We need to talk about what happened on Saturday and you know it."
Jade leans against the wall of the janitor's closet since Tori is still blocking the only way for her to leave. "I said all I needed to say on Saturday. However, if you didn't that sounds more like your problem. You can't just drag me away from what I'm doing to have a conversation with me so you can relieve your guilty conscience."
Tori groans in frustration. "Why do you have to be so impossible?"
Jade smirks and it makes Tori crazy with irritation. "I have no idea what you mean."
Tori tries to push her growing feelings of irritation and frustration away to get out what she needs to say to Jade without making their current situation worse than it already is. "What happened on Saturday needs to be resolved. I know that something clearly upset you."
Jade decides to play along so she can get Tori to let her out. "Yeah, you're right. I am upset. Do you want to know why I'm upset?"
Tori breaks out into a smile. "Yes."
Jade pushes herself off the wall and takes a few steps toward Tori. "I'm upset because⦠You won't let me leave this closet when I have better things to do than talk to you about pointless things I don't care about."
Tori throws her hands up in exasperation. "Why do you have to be so difficult?"
"I don't want to talk to you about this. I don't talk about my feelings. Not with you, not with Beck. Not with anyone so just leave me alone so I can get to class."
Tori isn't backing down. She stands her ground. "Just talk to me, please."
Jade puts her pride aside and lowers her guard a tiny bit because she figures this is the only way she can get out of this. Jade's had a question lingering in her mind for the last few days and now feels like the right time to ask it. "Is that what you think of me? You automatically assumed I'd tell people about your feelings for me when I've never made fun of anyone's sexuality before. I won't deny that I'm mean but you of all people should know that there's another side to me. I was vulnerable in front of you after Beck and I broke up when you were still new to Hollywood Arts. I let you see a part of me that hardly anyone gets to see. Yet, somehow after all that you think I don't know that you can't choose who you like? I've done crazy things when it comes to Beck. The fact that you thought I'd use your feelings for me against you, for whatever reason, is hurtful to me. Knowing that I trust you more than you trust me when I've done so many things for you that I wouldn't have done for anyone else makes me sorry that I ever tried to do anything nice for you."
"Jade, I'm sorry I hurt you. I wasn't trying to. You have to see where I'm coming from with this."
Jade laughs curtly. "I have to see your point of view? You're the one who verbally attacked me when I was the one trying to come to you as a friend to talk to you about something in private. What did I get for trying to tell you that your romantic feelings for me weren't going to be an issue in us being friends? What you said cut me deeply. I had the best intentions and all you could think about was yourself."
"All of these feelings are new for me and I couldn't stand the fact that someone might find out about it. I've only started to accept myself and somehow you found out about my feelings for you. I don't know if I would have told you because, well, I didn't want it to change anything between us. We didn't get off on the right foot when we first met but we've come so far since then. We've been working toward becoming friends these last few months and I didn't want to make that harder for us by telling you about any feelings I'd developed for you." Tori takes a shaky breath in and exhales slowly. She's never heard Jade open up like this about her feelings before. "How do we fix this?"
Jade shrugs her shoulders before looking down at the ground. "I don't know. Maybe we can't fix it." When Jade looks back at Tori she knows something is wrong.
Tori seems to be near tears but Jade can't really tell because Tori's eyes aren't welling up with tears but then she hears the crack in her voice. "I'm in love with you and it scares the hell out of me but I can't stand the thought of you being mad at me. I can't stand the thought that I've hurt you." Tori approaches Jade and takes her hand. "Please Jade. Tell me how I can fix this." Tori begs as the tears Jade didn't see before start to come rolling down Tori's face.
Jade uses her hand that's not being held by Tori's to wipe her tears away. She starts on the right side of her face, quickly moving her hand over to the left side of her face. "Please don't cry" Jade whispers softly. Jade's hand lingers on Tori's face for a second too long before Jade suddenly drops it at her side and leaves there. "I don't know if we can fix it but I'm willing to try if you are."
"Yes. Yes!" Tori is so overcome with emotion that she throws her arms around Jade's back and crushes her in a tight hug. Jade doesn't say anything, she just wraps her arms around Tori and holds her for a minute before pulling away.
"Okay," Jade says slowly. Her phone goes off and she pulls it out of her pocket to check it. When she sees the time, she puts her phone back into her pocket and puts her attention back on Tori. "We can pick this up later because I've got to go. Cat is waiting for me outside of our first period."
"Alright," Tori replies. She leans into Jade's space and kisses her cheek. "Thank you. You won't regret this."
Jade is shocked for a few long seconds but she recovers fast. "Yeah. I'm sure I won't," Jade replies softly before opening the door. Quickly Jade makes her way in the direction of her class before the bell rings. Shortly after, Tori does the same.
Jade makes it to her first class three minutes early. When Cat spots her she smiles brightly.
"Hi Jadey" Cat exclaims with her usual cheery tone of voice.
"No!" She yells instantly. She hates being called that even by her best friend.
Cat's smile drops for a minute but she smiles again. Cat is about to speak again when the bell rings. Jade smirks. "Saved by the bell," she mumbles quietly to herself.
