Fuuka's Last Kiss
Chapter XIII - The Waterfall Village - Part II
"If you talk, we let you live... for a while." - Hisame
Hisame sighed.
The cell that imprisoned the Kunoichi with the unkempt spiky brown hair was reasonably spacious, but Hisame was still anything but happy with the situation she found herself in. She might have to spend the rest of her life between the barren cave rock and the prison bars if she didn't come up with an idea of how to free herself from the hole she had been thrown into. The cell was comfortably furnished, considering the circumstances. Sanitary facilities built into the cell wall and a relatively soft bed were supposed to make Hisame feel reasonably comfortable. One could even argue that, considering what she had done, she should actually be happy and grateful that her head was lying on a soft pillow and not in a bucket, separated from the rest of her body, as many in the village had wished. It was only by Shibuki's grace that her lungs were allowed to breathe the humid air down here. She straightened up and now sat on her bed. The candlelight on the wall that gave her cell warm light flickered. Although she was underground, cool breezes seemed to find their way into the cave system that stretched beneath the village leader's personal estate sometimes.
When Hisame was brought here a few days ago, she was struck by how complex this system of passages and tunnels were, sometimes leading up, sometimes down. She tried to memorise the way. In the event of an escape, knowledge of the structure of this labyrinth would certainly be helpful. Here, almost certainly, only the biggest criminals and the most dangerous Ninjas of the village were held. Any prisoner who would try to escape would first have to find his way out to see daylight again; a seemingly hopeless endeavour - but not for Hisame. In the past, she was considered the smartest Ninja of her village, Amegakure - the Village Hidden by Rain. But one day she decided to turn her back on her village and try her luck as a renegade Kunoichi – a Nukenin. Hisame decided that her skills should benefit herself first and foremost, and not the village to which she was beholden. That caused her a lot of trouble at the time, after all, one could not simply leave a Shinobi village, but the Kunoichi was cunning and clever. Countless times in the past, her precise perception and resourcefulness had gotten her out of difficult situations. She would find a way to turn the tide this time too - she was sure of that, even if she was unsure about how to accomplish that this time.
"Are you settled yet?"
A familiar voice snapped her out of her thoughts.
"A bit muggy here, if you ask me," he added.
A masked figure suddenly stood before her cell bars. The lower half of his face was adorned with a dark bandana that went under his headband and covered his left eye. He had spiky white hair and he wore his headband conspicuously crooked.
"What do you want, Kakashi? Haven't you done enough to me?"
Hisame seemed anything but pleased by the presence of the Jonin from Konoha, who had held the office of Hokage for a time. His presence seemed kinda suspicious to her. The fact that he was there when she was carrying out her mission was too much of a coincidence in her opinion. But this question seemed secondary to her. First she had to find a way to get out of here - and Kakashi came in handy.
"You're the reason I'm in this awful shithole."
"You yourself are responsible for this, Hisame, besides..."
Kakashi let his gaze slowly glide through the interior of her cell, as if he was surveying the furnishings. Then he smiled - at least judging by the one eye that could be seen.
"... It doesn't seem that bad to me. Also there's no dirt on your face, and your hands are free and you're not tied up - unlike last time, you remember?"
Many years earlier, Kakashi's trio of Genin - Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura - whose Sensei he was at the time, had ensured that her Missing-Nin career took an unfortunate turn. The village of Taki had been famous for its so-called Hero's Water. A liquid that had the potential to immeasurably increase the abilities and Chakra of the Ninja who drank it. But this increase in strength came at a high price; the water could drastically shorten the remaining years of life, which is why it was forbidden to ever use it again. Nevertheless, this special water had been a promising and powerful tool, targeted by many who sought more power, including Suien - a former Jonin of the village and former mentor of Shibuki. He hired Hisame and together with their allies they invaded the village to acquire the Hero's Water. Hisame had made arrangements beforehand to lure Kakashi away so that they would have an easier time, which she personally regretted to some extent; Hisame wanted to fight the infamous Jonin from Konoha, after all.
After successfully invading the village of Taki with the help of Suien, they first rounded up the villagers and then threatened and tortured them with the intention of luring out Shibuki, who was in possession of the water. Shibuki, however, was not the confident, charismatic personality he would later become back then. Paralysed by his own cowardice, he stayed in hiding while Hisame and her comrades ruthlessly abused one villager after another. They even did not stop at the children. But Team 7's courage and sacrifice inspired the young, insecure Shibuki and together they managed to defeat and capture her and her comrades. It was pure shame for the Kunoichi, but that also was how she met Kakashi - even if she wished their first encounter had happened under less ignominious circumstances.
"So you're just here to feast your eyes on the sight, yes?"
"You know that's not true."
"Then why are you here?"
Kakashi detached himself from the wall and stepped forward again.
"I want to talk to you."
Hisame looked at him expectantly.
"Tell me who hired you."
Hisame weighed her options, but without giving a thoughtful impression to the outside world. Kakashi added: "I can help you if you let me. But only if you coope-"
Suddenly, she threw herself at the bars.
"Don't let me stay locked up here for the rest of my life, Kakashi!" she pleaded. "Don't let-"
"I will do my utmost, but I can only help you if you talk. Many Shinobi have died in the action. If you tell me who is behind all this, I may be able to convince Shibuki to shorten your detention."
Kakashi knew how to convince. But there seemed to be more to him than the mere use of interrogation tactics, with which Kakashi was very familiar due to his time with the Anbu of Konoha, His calm, deep voice and his empathetic manner immediately awakened a feeling of security, sympathy and trust in the addressee of his words. One 'wanted' to cave in to him. However, Hisame was intelligent enough not to fall for it.
"I don't know what you're talking about, Kakashi."
"So you deny that you were involved in the assault on the mansion?"
"The truth is that the matter was very different from what it appeared to be."
"So you're telling me that you just happened to be around when this attack happened, although you're not even allowed to set foot in the village anymore?"
"No."
"Then what?"
Hisame sighed.
"If I tell you the truth, you have to promise to protect me."
Kakashi nodded.
"Those who organised the raid on Shibuki were followers of Suien."
"Suien? He has been held captive here in this cave for much longer than you."
"But there are still people in the village who share his views."
It is an open secret that there are people not only in Taki but also in the other villages who disagree with the recent developments in the Shinobi world. Kakashi's curiosity seemed piqued, and Hisame knew how to tell a largely fictional story believably. She let go of the grate and crossed her arms.
"There are some forces in the village that want to see the village not as an ally of Konoha, but as a major power in its own right. Individuals like Suien who seek the power of the Hero's Water that Shibuki keeps under lock and key."
"Just like you did back then."
Hisame smiled as her eyes closed and her head tilted down.
"Like we did back then, yes. Back when we first met."
She lifted her head again and looked into his covered face, still smiling at him as the candlelight sparkled in her eyes.
"As I was saying, there are many in the village who are unhappy, and one of that group of people-"
"You lie."
Kakashi looked into her eyes for a moment, as if her black eyes told him that everything about this story was made-up.
"If one of your comrades didn't gave in to the interrogation, I might have bought that story of yours."
For Hisame it was clear, that this was a test, a bluff to trap her. No member of Root would ever give up the slightest bit of information. They were far too loyal for that. If captured, not a single one of them would betray Fuen, which might have been one of the reasons Kakashi was here, talking to her, she speculated. She worked for Fuen, but she was not one of her henchmen. Besides, the two knew each other personally. After all, it was Kakashi himself who helped her escape back then - a decision that had not been easy for him, but Hisame could be very 'convincing'.
"I have no reason to lie to you, Kakashi, believe me!"
Kakashi was silent for another while, and although Hisame showed excellent self-control and could always keep her emotions in check, Kakashi's silence made her uncomfortable. Then, suddenly, his hand moved slowly towards his face and he gently pulled the dark fabric from his left eye.
Hisame's eyes widened and her red lips parted. In a split moment, Hisame felt naked, exposed, while sweat dripped from her forehead. She had heard of the legendary and unique ability of the Uchiha clan, and she knew that Kakashi also possessed the Sharingan, but nothing could have prepared her for this moment. Her body froze as she stared into his eyes in horror.
What... what is happening here? What is happening to me?
Then, in another split second, Kakashi was suddenly no longer in front, but behind her. He put his hands on her exposed shoulders.
"I don't believe you."
The perplexed Kunoichi's tense muscles relaxed. Kakashi allowed her to turn around and she glared at him. Although she got to see both of his eyes this time, they were just as dark as her own. No red, no signs, no turns, same eyes, simular spiky hair – and just the familiar sight of his face that she was not allowed to see.
"Too bad."
Hisame regained her composure.
"In that case... maybe this will convince you."
She stepped a little closer to him so that their upper bodies touched. Her power of persuasion was not limited to manipulative words, so she didn't hesitate to go to Plan B. Her hand approached his face and Kakashi looked almost nervous. When her fingers tried to reach for his bandana, he grabbed her hand.
"Don't..."
Hisame answered his reservation with a seductive smile on her part and his resistance towards her dissolved. She tore his mask from his face and grinned.
"You haven't changed a bit."
Her lips approached his exposed mouth, but instead of the warm, soft feel of his mouth, her lips unexpectedly felt something barren and hard. She wrenched her eyes open and noticed her mouth touching the iron grating. Suddenly Kakashi stood on the other side of the grate. He leaned against the wall, folded his arms and watched Hisame kissing the grate. Disgusted, she released her lips from the cold, dirty metal. She didn't understand at first what had happened - and what hadn't - and looked at Kakashi in wonder.
"Neither have you."
Kakashi pulled his scarf back over his left eye, turned to the side and was about to leave when he suddenly sensed a presence.
"Hehehehehe."
A sinister laugh echoed through the corridors and a woman with long hair emerged from the shadows, her clothing almost as striking as Hisame's, albeit in a different colour, but no less eye-catching than the blue Hisame herself wore.
"So you are the son of Sakumo. The resemblance is striking. I knew your father."
"Who are you?"
"Huh? I see he didn't teach you how to talk to women. What a shame..."
Fuuka drew her eyebrows together, lowered her gaze and smiled confidently at him.
"In that case, I'll have to show you. Let's make it a quicky, shall we?"
