Wow, I've realised I kinda ignored this story for 2 years after things got crazy over here. I'm so sorry about that. I've been working on other stories, some fantasy novels I hope to get published and working on my twin writing site doing poetry and romance stories.

Anyway, Noriko finally expresses her feelings for Miaka, Miaka makes changes in her life and things get spicy

Please follow, favourite and review 3

Noriko wiped her forehead wearily, briefly removing her cap to relieve her head of the heat. Brushing sweat away and sighing, though the physical effort didn't cause her any strain or fatigue, the heat was intense and she longed for the cool of some shade or an ice cream, just some relief from the heat. Cutting off her hair in the book had been a smart idea, now being reborn, it just felt right, realising how problematic it had been to deal with in the past. Casting aside her sisters shadow to become her true self, accepting her grief and growing into someone new. Now that she had been reborn, she wanted to live as her true self, she no longer wanted to be a counterfeit for her sister. Unbuttoning her blue work jacket to tie around her waist, now adorning her work trousers and a white tee, air flushing against her skin and easing the heat from her body. Able to breathe once more. Being a delivery girl came in handy with her physical strength from the book, able to endure physical labour better than the average person. Able to earn a living in this world and earn some money. Though she often got weird looks as to why she appeared so inhumanely strong, not even those who attended a gym were capable of her feats of strength. She was glad she asked Suzaku to keep her powers, it came in handy for protecting Miaka.

Though she had been Yui's roommate for the longest time, forging a friendship with the younger female and learning all about her life in the modern world. Yui had been immensely helpful in her adjustment period and learning of how her world worked. Noriko had made up her mind, she knew what she wanted, what her heart was telling her to do. It was time she moved in with Miaka, becoming her roommate felt like the most natural decision, it felt right. After being separated via her death in the book, she wouldn't abandon Miaka again in her time of need.

Miaka would be safest with her, she could trust her, she was familiar, Miaka would be able to open up with her, share her burdens and overcome her hardships with someone looking out for her. She would never raise her hand to Miaka or bully her as Taka had, the very fact he had made her sick to her stomach. She loved all of Miaka, her flaws, her odd habits and annoying traits, her crybaby nature, obsession with food, how she always tended to doze off at the oddest moment. But more than that her loyalty and unwavering love to all those closest to her. The tears she had shed for her warriors showed testament to her passion as the priestess of Suzaku, her battle to summon her beast god. She knew Miaka felt like crap and she needed to cheer her up, she needed to protect Miaka's smile for as long as she could. After she had lost it thanks to Taka, she needed to find her way again. But first Miaka needed a job to form an income, Taka had acted as Miaka's provider for too long, controlling their income and using it as he wished. Miaka never had anything for herself, being treated that she had to endure his behaviour because he gave her a home. She needed that independence and freedom, it would do her some good, then she could treat her to celebrate this change in her life.

"How's Miaka doing after Taka's intrusion? I know that shook her up a hell of a lot?" Noriko pressed, she wanted to check in. After Taka had made himself unwelcome in Yui's home, she worried that he may attempt to return when she wasn't around to protect either of them. Tetsuya had warned Yui's neighbours of Taka in case they wanted to call the police, should he ever show up again. Miaka had faced numerous traumatic events in the book which had matured her as a person and left many scars, no doubt Taka's actions would trigger her and resurface repressed memories. The old Tamahome would have never put Miaka through any of this.

"She's still shaky, he's not been around since, mostly she's just been worrying about my bruise" Yui pressed

Noriko smiled, she saw how scared Miaka became when Taka barged in, closing in on herself like a frightened child, terrified of what he would do to her. Miaka couldn't live her life in fear that Taka would keep searching for her, she couldn't let herself hide away because of him. She would never let Miaka feel that scared again, none of them would. "Yui, do you know of any job vacancies? Miaka needs to get out of the house and she needs that support if she finds a new flat".

Yui hummed, she knew Taka had expected Miaka to be a housewife, staying at home and taking care of the chores. However, it closed off her communication to her friends and any ability to have a social life, which isolated her. Now that Miaka had dumped Taka and freed herself from his control, she was able to make her own choices. She agreed that Miaka needed a job, Taka had insisted he was going to provide for them and Miaka could take care of the home. Though Miaka had in the past questioned their savings and if they had enough money, Taka had pressed she didn't need to worry about a thing with him around. But it slowly turned to control all aspects of her life. What guys she spoke to, who her friends were, what she did in her personal life. Miaka had always been popular, after attending high school that fact became blatantly obvious. But after Taka returned into her life, his jealousy spiked, glaring down and intimidating any man who came close to her, even if he was just being friendly. Him working late and not being able to spend time with her, expecting Miaka to wait for him. Guilt-tripping her for the fact he couldn't remember the Suzaku seven or the book of four god, refusing to allow her to remember her friends or her past as the priestess of Suzaku.

Miaka had cried over Tamahome, the severance between them both when he was dragged back into the book, accepting that she would never see Tamahome again. That she would follow in the footsteps of her predecessor Suzuno, the priestess of Byakko. Miaka had poured over his letter, cried over him, mourned for him, but she moved on with her life. But then Taka came into her life, resurfacing her feelings for him and their past together, Tamahome reborn. Though the brief honeymoon faze had been sweet and passionate, reminiscing over their past and how happy they had been together. It wasn't meant to be, realising that dreams were never meant to last. Tamahome was gone, the man she loved was gone, the man she loved now was a shadow of the man she previously loved. Realising now why allowing a warrior and a priestess to become lovers was never meant to be.

Yui nodded "I'll have a look around, there were a few cafes and restaurants hiring staff. I don't know about the wages but they would make some money. She could save up some money, but me, Keisuke and Tetsuya would all be there for her" she pressed. She knew Noriko had Miaka's best interests at heart, it had been that way ever since she accepted her role as Miaka's warrior. Doing whatever she could to ensure Miaka succeeded and became her happiest, strongest version of herself. But Miaka was not just Yui's best friend, she was her family, as much as Keisuke was.

Noriko smiled, wishing she had been able to connect with Yui sooner, wondering if perhaps she would have been less lonely in the book. Though previously strangers, she and Yui had become close friends upon her rebirth. She had been reborn in Tokyo Japan with only her memories, speaking fluently in Chinese and Japanese, due to her past life, which made her popular with fellow students. her trendy and unique fashion sense caught the eye of many of her peers. Nuriko being reborn as Noriko, an eighteen-year-old college graduate and delivery girl, openly bisexual, still harbouring her past affections for Hotohori and Miaka. She had dated, flirted and had had encounters with both genders, but still held a candle for Miaka, hoping she may someday cross paths with her. Her lovers had suspected she had someone on her mind, due to a distant expression of longing and conflict, later expressing her love for Miaka. Suzaku had bestowed her with the memories of her life in the book, the mark of Suzaku still over her heart, which she lied and merely stated was a tattoo. She had been living in a small dorm room as she studied and saved up money, passing her time by reading books, her part time job, enjoying her hobbies of shopping and occasional parties.

Incidentally ran into Yui who remembered her from the book, recognizing her face and hair, one of Miaka's warriors, the one Nakago murdered using Ashitare as a tool. The two of them stunned beyond belief to have fortuitously crossed paths. Noriko begged Yui to keep it a secret, if Miaka knew she was reborn it would ruin her life with Taka. As much as she cared about Miaka, she didn't want to disrupt her happiness. Yui had offered Noriko to become her roommate, causing a friendship to blossom as she helped her navigate the modern world. But at the same time it allowed Yui to atone for her past mistakes, Yui expressing her guilt for the suffering she caused Noriko and her friends, their deaths and Miaka's trauma. Hoping to do right and form a friendship with her, despite Nakago being responsible for such actions. Expressing what had happened to Miaka's life with Taka.

Noriko happily took the roommate position, Tetsuya was stunned but helped her adjust, knowing how strange and lonely it would be for Noriko, being without her family or her friends. Never having any connection in the real world to anyone from her past life. But soon it became obvious that Noriko had someone on her mind, as much as she tried to deny it, that she didn't want to involve herself in Miaka's life. Noticing all the girls Noriko hooked up with greatly resembled Miaka in some way, it wasn't hard to put the pieces together. They helped keep Noriko a secret until Yui burst and expressed her worry for Miaka, how Noriko needed to save Miaka just as she had done so in the past. Acting as her shield and helping Miaka in times of need. How Taka had become cold, negligent and manipulative of Miaka, how she had become a shell of herself, no longer the girl she knew. Noriko needed to save her priestess, save her best friend, that Miaka needed to find her strength again, that Noriko had always been a beacon of strength both emotionally and physically, Miaka needed her in her life.

The reunion had been the happiest moment for both of them, Noriko had been shaking with nerves the entire time, seeing Miaka in person once again. Miaka sobbing in her arms, reunited with her best friend and warrior, a familiar face from her past, someone she dearly loved. Terrified she would wake up and find it was a dream, that Noriko wasn't actually back and she had formed her from the recesses of her mind. Since then, Miaka hadn't left her side, drawn to Noriko and always thinking of her when she was lost or needed comfort. Though healing, she was showing glimpses of her old self again, which gave all of them hope. "I'll ask around at work, but I'll offer some advice once my shift ends" Noriko promised

She heard Yui smile down the phone, she had a feeling that she was about to get made fun of somehow. "She misses you, so hurry home after work" Yui teased

Noriko felt her cheeks flush with embarrassment "Brat" she muttered, Yui really was like a younger sister to her. Wondering if Kourin would have acted the same way if she had the chance to grow up. Yui loved playing matchmaker between Noriko and Miaka, using sneaky tactics to bring them together.

Miaka sat quietly on a bench, gazing at the sun reflecting on the water, her hair bound into a French braid, rested on her chest. She felt so peaceful, so calm, it had been a long time since she had felt this way. She was wearing skinny jeans and a red blouse with short crinkled sleeves and a heart-shaped chest. Yui sat beside her, her blonde hair framed perfectly around her face, wearing a round-necked striped shirt and black jeans. Miaka enjoyed the feeling of the sun on her skin, the freeing feeling of being able to breathe for the first time in a long time, no longer shackled by the ring around her finger.

"What are you thinking about?" Yui asked, she hadn't seen Miaka this contemplative in a while, getting lost in her own thoughts. It was a comforting sight, reminding Yui of their happier times in middle school. Before both of their lives had been ruined by the book, before their lives had been warped by their individual beast gods and traumas. Her past self would have revelled in Miaka's suffering and sadness, seeing it as payback for what she went through. But now all Yui could think of was how Miaka had suffered alone for so long, unable to reach out or believe she was worth saving. Her love for Miaka only growing stronger, wishing to save her as Miaka had when they were teenagers.

Miaka blinked in surprise, snapping out of her daze, a feeling of guilt washing over her "Gomen, Yui, it's just so nice to be free of intrusive thoughts" Miaka smiled. She hadn't a care in the world, nor did she have any fear of Taka showing up. She just wanted to live in the moment, make this memory last and enjoy having her life back. Able to live on her own terms and make her own choices again.

Yui smiled back "You've regained a healthy weight, your sleeping normally, you've perked up" she smiled. Miaka had began to enjoy food again, scarfing down whatever food Yui or Noriko made her. Finding joy in her hobbies again. They were able to laugh and smile together, but Yui knew it couldn't last, Miaka would need to face reality again soon. She needed something to fall back on. "Listen, Miaka, I know Taka made you study from home, control your finances. But… have you considered returning to college, getting a part-time job. It would be good for you once you find a flat" she encouraged. Miaka wasn't stupid, she was just ditzy, she was put the effort it in order to achieve the necessary grades to attend high school. She was smart enough to achieve whatever she wanted, she didn't have to live in Taka's shadow any longer. Miaka would feel so much happier having her own space, it would be scary at first but she would learn to love it.

Miaka's gaze diverted to Yui instantly, her eyes wide and her hands clenching, she'd spent three years of her life waiting for Taka, then another year regretting she ever reunited with him. She'd spent so long by his side she forgot how to be on her own, having a place to call her own, a space she could form into her own, sounded wonderful. But she was scared, there were so many parts of adult life she was never prepared for, a job, bills, other financial issues. She wasn't that great a cook and she could be ditsy. "But… I could never, Taka and money…" Miaka babbled.

"You had a separate account previously, you just need to reopen it, Noriko, Keisuke and Tetsuya are more than happy to put funding towards it. But a job will help you put money aside and regain your independence" Yui encouraged. Miaka hadn't touched any of her money in her previous account, so she wouldn't be broke, but she hadn't put any funds towards in a while. But whatever she needed to get by, any support at all, they would be more than happy to help her. Keisuke was her big brother, he'd faced worse by her side and wouldn't abandon her during her time of need. Tetsuya loved Miaka as an older brother and practically saw her as family as it was.

Miaka's eyes welled up with tears, she couldn't thank Yui enough for her kindness, she didn't feel worthy "Yui, I…. I don't…" she babbled tearfully, trailing off. She'd neglected any of their help in the past, hiding away and assuring she was fine. That Taka was just busy with work and she was keeping herself busy, lying about her incessant loneliness and negligence. But Yui never gave up on her, she reached out her hand and helped Miaka out of her darkness. Yui was her soulmate in a platonic sense, she loved her, she understood her, she knew her better than anyone. Her faith in Miaka was unwavering and she never gave up on her.

Yui smiled "Miaka, you're my best friend, you tried to do it on your own and you were struggling. I want to help you, let me help you, you know your brother and Tetsuya would do anything for you" he smiled. Miaka had tried, she had put her strength and patience into the relationship and tried to salvage it, but she had seen that it was doomed to fail. She didn't know how to escape but Yui and the others had helped her. Yui loved Miaka more than anything, as did Keisuke. All they wanted was for her to be happy again and find the life she deserved. Yui's eyes were so genuine, so patient, Miaka couldn't it, the love behind them warmed her soul and she couldn't remember the last time anyone looked at her that way. This warm feeling of safety, that she was going to be ok. She didn't know what to say, she pressed herself against Yui's chest, tears spilling over, this was more than she could handle. She never thought she would be free of Taka, but her best friend was here by her side helping guide her way.

"There's a burger place by the station, easy to get to, popular, good pay" Yui suggested, everyone worked in fast food at some point, whether it was a long-term career or a temporary job, it was easy money and had a range to choose from. Miaka would get a uniform included and anyone could do it, the skills were easy to pick up and Miaka's warm cheery nature would bring everyone in.

Miaka hummed, that didn't sound like a good idea "Yeah, but I don't think it would be much good for my skin…" Miaka winced, she didn't like the thought of the grease and smell. She'd eaten so much junk food as a teenager the thought made her stomach turn now. She didn't much like the idea of being around it every single day, she would get tired of it so fast. Besides there was probably someone less clumsy and focused that would do a better job of it than she could.

"Maybe a local shop? Loads of mini-marts take on staff and it would be good pay" Yui continued. There were loads of mini shops around their college and old high school, loads of students, business workers and more who visited every day. She would never be bored and there would always be something to do. On the bonus if she worked there she could get discount on food and freebies to fill her fridge when she got her own place. Loads of local shops were family run but some were independent, students took them as part time work but when family run businesses had kids going away. They were always looking for new replacement staff, ideal for Miaka.

Miaka nodded, she could wear her casual clothes which would save on having a uniform to clean. Though she would need training the work would be easy enough "Maybe, depends on how close it would be. But it sounds promising" she agreed. She was so glad Yui was helping her with this she would be useless on her own, able to cross some off the list. She just hoped something came up soon, or she would feel guilty about merely sitting around their flat for ages. Suddenly, the front door opened, Noriko appearing in the door still in uniform, Miaka gulped, she hadn't seen Noriko in uniform before, she had to admit she looked good. Nuriko had always been attractive as a guy back when she was a warrior in the book, but now as a woman her attractiveness went through the roof. Her short hair under her cap, the way her uniform showed her figure, slightly baggy but shaped her curves and her zip undone to reveal her shirt, showing her chest. Wait, why was she staring? This was Noriko, her best friend, she'd known her since she was fifteen, a whole four years of her life. Why was she suddenly having all these romantic feelings towards her? Acting all flustered and foolish, and Noriko was a girl. She couldn't recall ever feeling this way about another woman before.

Noriko saw them both at the table and smiled, Miaka seemed in a happier mood which was good, though she was still her daydreaming self "Yo, I miss anything?" she asked. She knew Yui had needed advice, after asking some coworkers she had some good recommendations on jobs. So they wouldn't be short on ideas.

Yui shook her head, now that Noriko was home Miaka would cheer up and they could have another mind to help. "Not much, we just started, wanna shower and join us?" she offered. Today had been a hot one and Noriko had been working in the sun all day, she had to be exhausted from the heat.

Noriko smiled, flashing one of her signature winks in their direction "Gotcha" she agreed, walking in the direction of her room, humming to herself as she did so. Miaka stared at her as she left, her greenish golden eyes burning with an intensity of passion that she had forgotten she could feel. Her heart in her throat, lost for words. Her cheeks burning, what was happening to her?

Yui saw her friend staring and was surprised, this was a new turn of events, for the longest time Miaka had eyes for one person, she was a loyal person when it came to matters of love. However, after becoming involved in the toxic relationship that was Taka, she had since discarded any fantasy of what love used to be like. Detaching herself from the daydreams of finding a handsome prince to sweep her off her feet. But she saw the features of Miaka's face soften when Noriko came into the room, how her whole demeanor brightened, Miaka was blushing, staring. The look of desire in her eyes when she saw Noriko just now. Miaka had always been daydreaming about boys, ever since they were in middle school together, but then upon becoming priestess, she became involved in a love triangle with Tamahome and Hotohori. Hotohori was willing to make Miaka his empress as well as his priestess, he was willing to risk anything for her. He worshipped and adored her, waiting his whole life for Miaka. Upon reflection and maturing, Miaka had wished she had returned the emperor's feelings and considered a relationship, now realising the mistake she had made with Tamahome. But now she had that second chance, with Noriko "Y'know Miaka, now that Taka's out of the picture, you leaving him and all. You can consider dating again" she teased.

Miaka blushed, averting her gaze to Yui accusingly, her cheeks flushed bright red "I… huh?!" Miaka babbled. She knew that mischievous look in Yui's eyes, she was up to something, scheming something. Though she had lost her previous malice and cruelty, Yui lived up to her reputation as the priestess of Seiryu. She worried for what Yui was planning but she had faith in her good intentions.

Yui smiled "C'mon Miaka, you've been with Taka since you were in middle school, he's a jerk and you can finally find the happiness you deserve. Don't hold yourself back because of him" she huffed. Miaka deserved a second chance to be happy, she had loved Tamahome in the book, her first love and one that wasn't meant to be but she would always remember. But Taka wasn't Tamahome, he may have been his reincarnation but they were nothing alike. Miaka wasn't a foolish teenager anymore, she was nearly an adult and she needed to find that person who could make her happy. Noriko could be that person, and she wasn't going to let Miaka deny herself of that. Miaka blushed, Yui was right, but then she wasn't the best in her grades for no reason. Tamahome was her first kiss, her first crush, her first everything, she'd married him right after high school, or become engaged anyway. But in the end, it was the worst choice she ever made, dragging her into a pit of unhappiness. She often wondered what her life would have become if she had chosen someone else. If she had forgotten Tamahome."Atta girl" Yui beamed proudly.

Noriko sat at the table, wearing a green tee-shirt and white shorts, a towel around her neck as she dried her hair, she sighed in contentment as she sat on the sofa. She could tell they had been having a serious topic of discussion prior to her joining them but she didn't pry. She respected the privacy of their friendship and she knew there would always be matters Miaka could only tell Yui. But she was here to help Miaka about gaining employment and she planned on doing her best to support her "So, what did I miss?" she questioned. They would be doing an awful lot of brainstorming and they may be up late discussing it.

"First two jobs were a miss, you got any recommendations, Nori?" Yui asked curiously, surely she must have gotten some suggestions from work. Being a delivery girl she could ask for recommendations from both coworkers and customers. If she had heard anything at all it would be a huge help to Miaka and cover some areas they may have not considered. Miaka was surprised to hear the nickname slip so easily past Yui's lips, she never would have considered it in the past, but it suited her so well. But then they had been roommates for a while, giving them that time to bond.

Noriko hummed, gazing at Miaka, considering all the potentials she could choose from. Imagining her in a maid costume, she'd look so cute and she'd be insanely popular, besides, teasing Miaka about it would be fun. "How about a waitress, loads of places would kill to have a girl like Miaka serving them. Plus tips" she suggested. Miaka didn't have to wear a costume to work, only specific places did that, for the most part she would need to wear a blouse and skirt. But having regular customers would be good for business no doubt. If Miaka ended up working in a cafe, she would be spending all of her breaks visiting her, maybe even her days off too.

Miaka blushed, crossing her arms and huffing like a child "Noriko! Stop teasing me!" she stammered, remembering on the quest for the Shinzaho when Nuriko playfully pretended to flirt with her. Reflecting now if Nuriko had perhaps been partially sincere in her interest. But it warmed her heart to remember and relive those times with Noriko again, nothing had changed and it comforted her. Knowing that no matter how bad she felt that Noriko would always make her smile or laugh in the end.

"Taka wasn't the only guy whose eye you'd caught, some girls too" Noriko pressed, Hotohori had loved her since his childhood and even after meeting her his love bloomed. Noriko had eventually fallen in love with her, swayed by her caring heart and endearing qualities. Tasuki had even developed feelings for Miaka but repressed them out of respect for her and Tamahome. Miaka was unaware of the love she inspired in others and how she forged affection in them. But she was so focused on Taka that she never noticed other admirers in her life. Now she was free to appreciate that, to understand people who had always admired her from afar.

Miaka shifted, she knew she was right it just wasn't something she had considered until now "Is… is there any that are near a college? I wanna go back to classes and… I'll be balancing a lot" she reflected. She couldn't wait to attend college life again, to socialise, meet people her age and get her life back. Realising how much she had missed due to Taka, all the memories and moments she had been robbed of because of him.

Noriko stared, Miaka going back to classes too? This was a dream come true, she had hoped Miaka would see sense and realise her worth again. Miaka was the kindest and most resilient person she had ever met, including Yui. Even when given the choice to wish for Tamahome and herself together, she made her wishes unselfishly and lived her life without him. She had been dragged back into her dreamworld when Suzaku made the mistake of reincarnating Tamahome as Taka. But he had rectified that mistake by reincarnating her, so that she may protect Miaka in his place with her memories in tact. Yui talked some sense into her, helping Miaka realise her worth and how she could change her life for the better. She smiled "Plenty Miaka, we'll keep an eye out" she winked. Miaka smiled, she felt so lucky to have such loyal friends

Tetsuya, Keisuke, Yui, Noriko and Miaka were all around the table, a steaming dinner sat before them, none of them was in the mood to cook, so Keisuke brought dinner over with Tetsuya. Keisuke had sensed Miaka was in better spirits and she and Yui had been discussing many important matters together. Miaka seemed happier, confident and comfortable with talking about it which gave him reassurance.

"So, what did you guys get up to today?" Keisuke asked, he knew Miaka still kept to her own company, when she wasn't glued to Yui's side. But then she was her comfort person and best friend, she needed her most at a time like this. Remembering when he and Miaka sat outside together, reaching out to her big brother for help. He knew Miaka was still struggling, but he was proud of her for making the choices she had. Separating herself from Taka and finally coming to terms with the fact their relationship was over and he was no good for her.

"Taka wasn't sniffing around was he?" Tetsuya questioned sternly, he'd become fiercely protective after his action's towards Yui. If Taka had no issue with threatening the people Miaka loved to blackmail her into coming home, who knew what else he was capable of. He refused to allow Miaka to fall back into his clutches, not after all the progress she had made. Noriko was good for her, Yui was good for her, being with the people who loved her was where she needed to be. Miaka was still taking baby steps but they were still proud of her, supporting and praising her through it all.

Yui smiled "All quiet over here, Taka's ran off with his tail between his legs for the foreseeable future" she winked. Tetsuya deflated a little, but he still held Yui's hand tightly. They all knew if Tetsuya or Keisuke saw him again, there would be more than sharp words, Tetsuya wouldn't hesitate to raise a fist to Taka and Keisuke wouldn't hold him back. They would be checking in an awful lot and reporting back to each other on whether or not he was still causing problems, at least until things settled down.

Miaka shifted, she knew Keisuke would help her no matter what, he really was the best brother she could ask for. Even in high school as much as he teased her, he never berated her for her grades as her mother had. She never pressured her or made her feel bad about herself, though stern he deeply loved her. He'd believed her when she told him about the book, he'd read it while she had been trapped inside and summoning the beast god. Even after all of this, he still believed in her. "I.. Keisuke, I know I never did great in school, I was surprised I got into Yotsubadai with Yui. But I've always been kinda clueless. But… I want to go to college, I don't know what subject, maybe medicine like Mitsukake, maybe the police force to fight like Tasuki or Noriko. But I know I can do it, somehow" Miaka pressed. Her heart had always wanted to help people, to protect people, to ensure their wellbeing and safety. She wanted to do something for herself now, knowing everyone was shielding her from Taka. She wanted to do them proud, to make something of herself again. She knew being a doctor would be hard work, that she would be stressed, pressured and have to deal with difficult choices and decisions, but she would be helping people. If she became a police officer she could work among the community, help people and use her inhuman strength to fight criminals. But whatever path she chose, she knew it would be the right one.

Keisuke stared in awe, he knew Miaka was genuine about this, he'd never seen her so driven and focused on something before. It was a long time since he had seen this kind of fire in her and it warmed him to see. Yes, she slept a lot in school, was lazy and ate like a pig sometimes, but she had matured immensely since then, her time in the book had changed her. Her warriors had acted as a mentor to her in some way, helping her grow. She still held every single one of them close to their hearts, holding their memories on her mind always and the memories she made there. Now with Noriko back in her life, she would help lead her in the right direction. Keisuke smiled "Well, no matter how much you study I wouldn't trust you in a hospital, your still way too clumsy. Your punch would do great in the police force, but you'd make a good teacher too" he suggested

Yui agreed, glad Keisuke was supporting her like the good brother he was. He'd always been the father to Miaka that neither of them had known. "Hell yeah, Miaka was always the one getting us out of fights and she used to punch a mean strike. She'd make a great police officer" she praised. Yui knew where her destiny led, she would help others and use her intellect to take her forwards in life. Yui was currently taking a medical degree to become a doctor, in hopes of healing those who had suffered, like herself or the warriors she lost. Her time in the book opening her eyes to the suffering of others. But Miaka would flourish as a police officer, using her conscience and courage to do the right thing.

"I take martial arts classes, so I can teach her a few things" Noriko added, she still remembered all her techniques from the book but she was taking self defence classes for her own sake and Miaka's. She had no issue teaching Miaka a thing or two if it improved her grades and experience in the long term, giving them a chance to bond. Miaka smiled, Taka never would have supported her like this, telling her that it sounded dangerous or a bad idea. Trying to deter her from doing anything that meant she wasn't where he could find her. Being able to tell her brother and friends about her hopes for the future, it felt good, she felt good, taking a new step.

Taka held the ring in his hand, tears spilling down his cheeks as he stared at it in disbelief, no matter how much he tried he couldn't stop crying. A part of him felt broken, sad and lonely, something calling out to Miaka. He had felt a severance to Miaka one morning, like part of him had been cut off, weakened, a string binding them had been cut. The power of Suzaku weakened within him, as if he was fading away into nothingness, but he knew it wasn't true. He was flesh and blood, he was real and he was alive. But the person he needed most wasn't here, she had found someone else, leaving him alone. He had thought it was a dream, but something in his gut told him otherwise, unable to ignore the gnawing feeling inside himself. Trying to press it to the back of his mind but he found it useless. As he walked to work, his mind wandering, he spotted something in a river, for a second he thought he was seeing things, second guessing himself. But his gaze remained fixated on the object, shining, bright and familiar, the red and silver gleam. Upon inspection, he had realised what it was, his heart shattering into pieces, his ring. The ring he had given Miaka before the battle against Nakago, the ring was a symbol of their love. Of their attempt to form a marriage in her world, a coupling while Suzaku had remained sealed away.

Miaka had thrown it away, discarded it, cutting off her ties to him and giving back her heart. Her way of telling him she no longer wanted to be part of his life, of he was no long welcomed in hers. He couldn't understand, no matter how much he contemplated the reasons why he kept falling short. Why Miaka would do this to him, to break his heart like this. He just wanted to talk to her, he wanted to understand her actions, to hear the truth of what she had hidden from him all this time. Why was Yui keeping Miaka from him? why did she look at him with such a cold gaze of disdain, as if he was the villain in her eyes? Was she jealous? Had she reverted to her old ways again? Like in the book? Back when she tried to separate them? When she wanted Tamahome all to herself due to her unrequited love for him? He needed to hear the truth from Miaka's lips, he needed to hear how she truly felt. Why she had become so cold towards him.

"You left me alone Taka"

"I don't want you anymore"

"You just don't get it"

He knew he couldn't always be around due to work which was hard on her, he'd begged his boss for time off but he knew he needed the money. Coming home exhausted, stressed and aching all over. All he wanted was Miaka to comfort him and remind him who he was doing this for. He couldn't always be by her side, he couldn't always be the man she wanted him to be. He knew he couldn't remember their past very well, he knew that when he was reborn he lost his memories of his time when she was priestess. But he loved Miaka, he loved her more than anything in the world, he wanted to protect her, that's all he wanted. It's what he was born to do "Miaka" he whimpered.

Miaka and Noriko sat on the couch, drinking casually together, Miaka wishing she had been able to do this in the book. All the moments she was robbed of when it wasn't duty, missions, ceremonies and other matters. They had been her friends and family, their lives had been changed the moment she appeared. No longer able to live the carefree moments they had once known. It felt good to finally be able have this time with Noriko, which she was robbed of after their passing. Keisuke had gone home and Tetsuya and Yui were in their room together, leaving them with some alone time to talk. It felt good to talk like this, as if nothing had changed, the same familiar face that never failed to make her smile when she needed it most. It felt good to change her life again for the better. The same thrill she got after she became the priestess of Suzaku for the first time, finally making her own choices. Moving on from Taka.

"So, you'll be handing out your CV to some café no doubt, but the training and paperwork to join the police is no joke" Noriko reflected, she knew Miaka could do it. But the training, work and hardships she would endure to achieve her goals would put a lot of pressure on her. Some fellow trainees may bully her, make her feel bad about herself, question her choices and more. Many may not believe in her but she knew Miaka could do it. She worried for Miaka but she knew she could never change her mind once it was made up.

Miaka laughed, her past self would have never seen this change in her future, but she was glad it was happening. "Yeah, so long as I don't become a crybaby I should be fine" she chuckled. She knew there would be moments she wanted to give up, question herself and wonder if any of it was worth it. But she had faced the same trials in the book and summoned her beast god. If she could make it as the priestess, she could make it in her world. But she still felt afraid, terrified of the unknown and what would happen to her during that time. All these changes happening so fast, it was scary but also exciting.

Noriko smiled, Miaka was once again blossoming into her stronger self, discarding her naivety and self doubt. She regretted how much of Miaka's life she had missed, only able to watch her during her journey to summon the beast god. But now she was struggling with matters from her own world and she wouldn't let Miaka face it alone "I'm proud of you, I always knew you could do it" she praised. She just needed someone who would believe in her.

Miaka smiled "It's funny, in the past I always thought you were just being mean, but now I realise when you teased me all those times. You were giving me advice" she reflected. Funny how growing up gave you that perspective. Noriko had bullied Miaka so much back then but it came from a good place, treating as one would a younger she always had Miaka's best interest at heart. When Tamahome was brainwashed by Nakago, she tried her hardest to make her smile. When she was struggling, when she was at her lowest, when she doubted herself, Noriko was always by her side.

Noriko blushed, even back then she was showing Miaka she cared via gestures "You were always so oblivious, it's no wonder it went over your head" she teased. She was still clueless, but not as much as before.

"You always looked out for me, all of you. I just wish…. I wish nobody had to die for me. Maybe in another life, all of my warriors could have lived" Miaka reflected. She knew sacrifices had to be made, she wasn't the only priestess who had lost her warriors, who had given their lives for their priestess. But she wondered if any of their deaths could have been avoided in the end, had Nakago not killed so many of them.

Noriko felt a sharp pain in her chest, she hated that after all this time Miaka still tore herself up over what had happened. None of it had been something she could control, no matter how much she tried. She knew Miaka harboured immense guilt at her warrior's deaths, that she could prevent or protect any of them. For not being able to return Hotohori's, sincere love, that no matter how many times he confessed or conveyed his love for her. She could never love him that way, that she couldn't return his sincere affections for her. For not being by Mitsukake's side when he died, when Chiriko and Nuriko died for her sake, watching them die in front of her and only being able to cry for them. Being so helpless as to fail to prevent them. "Miaka, Hotohori married before his death, he had a good life, a second chance. Mitsukake was reunited with Shouka. I… I died for you, I don't regret that decision. I just wished I could have told you my feelings first and saved you the heartbreak" she explained, her voice breaking.

"But…. But Hotohori, he told me his feelings, told me he loved me so many times before. But all I could think about was Tamahome, I never even considered happiness with Hotohori. How happy he could have made me if I just waited" Miaka sniffled. Hotohori had comforted her when she felt down, conflicted or doubted herself as the priestess. When Tamahome went to Kutou in order to keep Yui company while she journeyed to find her other Suzaku warriors, Hotohori had comforted her. He was willing to do anything to make her happy, eventually unable to hold himself back and kissed her. Miaka nearly forgot Tamahome and opened her heart to him, but it all fell apart. Now she knew that Hotohori would have never treated her as Taka had. Noriko felt a sharp pain in her chest, was she jealous of the emperor? "I… I'm glad he met Houki, that he found someone as sincere and sweet as her. Someone who finally loved him. But, I wish I hadn't broken his heart to do so" she wept.

Noriko softened, hugging Miaka closely, pressing her head to her shoulder "Miaka-baby, the emperor loved you with all his heart, he waited for you just as we all did. He wanted to protect you, the first girl he ever loved. But it wasn't meant to be, and he found the girl who made him happiest, Houki. You can't blame yourself for what happened. I… I'm just happy Suzaku gave me my second chance to be reborn, to find you all over again…" she trailed off. First loves rarely ended well and didn't always mean they would be together, but you never forgot them. He had hoped that he could be happy with Miaka but it was never meant to be. But he found that person in Houki and made a family for himself. But now she had been given the chance that Hotohori never had, she knew he would give their love his blessings.

"Noriko…." Miaka mumbled, even now she felt her heart calming, her worries dissipating, all her doubts fading. Because of Noriko.

Noriko's grip tightened, she felt herself shaking from nerves "… I'm sorry I left you with Taka, that was stupid on my behalf. I'm sorry he hurt you, I'm sorry you were so lonely. You never deserved that heartbreak. But, I promise you I'll never leave you again. I'll protect you all over again, as my priestess and my best friend" she promised. She would never forgive Taka for what he had done to Miaka, breaking the promise she made him keep to protect her. She felt as though her sacrifice meant nothing, giving her life had meant nothing. Miaka had been left alone in the world with someone who ended up making her miserable. But she planned on making it up to Miaka with every moment she had, hoping she would see how special she was. Fulfilling her duty was one of the Suzaku seven.

Miaka felt her tears well up all over again from happiness, she couldn't handle this, the amount of love she was being showered with. She would become selfish, greedy, Noriko was apologising for Taka, for all of it. For going up that stupid mountain by herself, getting herself killed, for abandoning her, for leaving her to make such hard decisions on her own. For breaking her heart. She wanted to call Noriko an idiot for blaming herself, none of them could have predicted Nakago's heartlessness, how far he would go. Just who he was willing to sacrifice to get what he wanted.

Noriko swallowed, why was she so scared? She'd flirted with people before, she had teased Miaka loads of times before. So why was she so scared? Suzaku give her courage "Miaka, you and Yui… you were talking about dating earlier right?" she asked.

Miaka felt her cheeks heat, pulling away to stare at Noriko in the eyes, she felt so embarrassed "You… you overheard that?" she stammered. Oh god kill her now. Yes Miaka hadn't been on a date since Taka, he was the only boy she had ever dated, person she had ever dated. But she needed to move on, find someone new. Someone better, someone who could make her happy. She wished Noriko never had to hear any of it "Y… Yui was just… being stupid… I mean, she was right but... I dunno.." she continued.

Noriko smiled, gazing at Miaka, she wanted to imprint this memory into her brain for the rest of her life. Her cheeks flushed, stumbling over her words, averting her gaze, her reddish-brown hair tumbling over her shoulders. Those golden-green eyes, god how she loved her. She had no idea of how perfect she was, why all of her warriors loved her so much. "Miaka, that night before I went up the mountain, me and Tamahome talked" she explained, licking her lips. Reflecting on this memory, the last one she had before her demise, it was bittersweet. Miaka's eyes widened, staring back at her in disbelief. "He kept it a secret all this time and I took it to my grave, I never had the chance to tell you and I never wanted to confuse you" she smiled sadly. Noriko's violet pinkish eyes met hers with a warm and tender gaze "I… I love you Miaka, I always have, as annoying as you were at first you grew on me. Somewhere along that path I fell in love with you. But because you were with Tamahome, like Hotohori I repressed it. But now I wish I'd told you, just to spite Taka if I knew he'd treat you this way" she forced out, her tone becoming angry at the last part.

Miaka couldn't believe it, she felt as if time had stopped and she had been reborn herself as someone new. Wondering how she had never noticed or realised it, how long Noriko had kept these feelings inside of herself. Noriko was in love with her? All this time she had loved her and died with that feeling? Tamahome had known but never said anything to her, Tamahome had known about her feelings, even reborn as Noriko possibly? All this time he had known about Noriko's love for her and kept it a secret. Now it all made sense why Noriko harboured resentment towards Taka, aside from his actions towards her "You mean when you punched Taka and said all that stuff?" she said shakily.

Noriko rubbed the back of her neck awkwardly "I… I was venting, I was frustrated. Taka broke our promise, whether it as amnesia or he's just a jerk. He hurt you, the one thing I asked him not to do" she protested bitterly. For what he had put her through Taka deserved a lot worse but she wouldn't become the villain in front of Miaka. She had cried enough tears for someone who wasn't worthy of them. She cupped Miaka's face softly "Miaka, I love you so much I asked Suzaku to bring me back to you. He sensed you were unhappy and reincarnated me as a woman under my wish. But all my memories from my past I retained. I know this is all new and strange, but I can wait for you, I waited the better part of a year before I met you again. I want you to love me, but I'll let you figure it out on your own" she smiled. She had asked her beast god to bring her back, to grant an impossible wish that she wanted with all of her heart. She wanted to see Miaka again, needed to see her again. But even before Noriko's wish Suzaku had sensed his mistake with Taka. Sensing his priestess was unhappy, suffering and calling out to him. That she had a wish in her heart and prayed he would hear it. She would spend the rest of her life loving Miaka as she deserved, hoping she would see how precious she was.

Miaka blushed, this was so much to process, she felt herself shaking. Noriko was in love with her, had been in love with her as a man in the book, now reborn as a woman she loved her with the same passion as before. Miaka didn't know what to say, she had never known such devotion before. She wasn't repulsed, she wasn't scared, she was surprised, but also bitter and angry that taka held such an important thing from her. She had so many feelings she didn't know what to say, unable to form words. She licked her lips "I… after Taka, I… it's… I need time, I'll wait for you but… can we… maybe? Slow? Keep things the way they are now but… I want to touch you, love you, with what feels right" Miaka mumbled. She was touch starved, she hadn't known intimacy in so long it felt alien to her.

Noriko smiled, she would never push anything on Miaka, nothing she wasn't comfortable with. She just wanted to make Miaka happy, to accept her love. She would spend the rest of her days making sure Miaka knew how loved she was "Of course" she nodded.

Miaka felt braver, smiling shyly "I... I like your hugs and holding your hand, but… I don't know if I'm brave enough to…." She blushed, the thought of being intimate with Noriko, it was too soon. Noriko's arms had always been where she felt safest, she could simply rest her head on Noriko's chest and know she would be ok. The moment they hugged again for the first time it just felt right. She didn't want anything to change for the worst and possibly ruin their bond. But she wanted to grow, she wanted to change and accept Noriko's feelings. But after just breaking up with Taka, she needed time to be ready for a new relationship, so much change in such a short period of time.

Noriko laughed softly, resting her forehead against Miaka's as she did in the past, easing the girl's anxiety "Miaka, I won't do anything unless you ask me to, I won't touch you unless you want me to. Having you in my arms again makes me happier than you know. But, being able to kiss you, that's something I look forward to" she winked. Miaka blushed, she wasn't naive, she had learned a lot about love and relationships since high school. She knew how dating worked and she knew how to show feelings for someone. Kissing, she could handle that, she'd kissed plenty of people before. She shakily shifted forwards, her heart in her throat, god why was the room suddenly so warm? She felt sick with nerves, but butterflies formed too, the eager tingle of excitement. She'd only ever kissed two people in her life, Tamahome and Hotohori, but now she was kissing someone entirely new.

Noriko cupped Miaka's face, stroking her cheeks, feeling Miaka calm against her touch, she could sense her anxiety and wanted to help calm her. If Miaka wasn't comfortable, she wouldn't do anything, she was just relieved to be able to express her feelings out loud. Conveying how much she cared about Miaka. She watched Miaka's eyes, gleaming with desire and hesitance, she nodded softly, waiting for Miaka's response. Miaka swallowed, nodding shakily, Noriko pressed forward, leaning towards Miaka, pressing her lips against hers, passionately pressing her lips to Miaka's, but not forcefully. Enjoying the softness of her lips against her own, wishing she could have done this in her past life, but just happy she was able to now. Miaka's lips were softer and sweeter than she imagined, everything she had ever hoped for and more.

Miaka blushed, Noriko's lips were soft, softer than Taka's, gentle and tender, kissing her so tenderly she wanted to cry. The feeling was like nothing she had ever felt before, warm and sweet like honey. She felt her intent and sincerity in the kiss, as if to assure her she was safe and loved, she would never hurt her. Nothing like Taka's, she could feel her love behind it, wondering how long Noriko had wanted to do this. Noriko slowly pulled away, blushing now, hoping she hadn't messed things up, that suddenly Miaka would hate her. She couldn't take this back, she couldn't reverse time and she couldn't deny it. This would forever be remembered, changing their relationship forever, she just prayed she had made the right choice. That she hadn't made an awful mistake, that she would chase Miaka away and make her realise that she couldn't return her feelings. She couldn't lose her all over again, it would hurt too much.

Miaka blushed, that was… different "I… that was…nice, different; but nice" she mumbled

Noriko smiled, a feeling of relief washing over her, she wanted to cry but she kept a brave face "And… you'd do it again," she asked. Glad to know Miaka had accepted her, that she was happy knowing that Noriko loved her and wanted her. Miaka blushed but nodded. Noriko smiled, she planned on making Miaka happier than Taka ever had, a playful smirk formed on her face "You know, if you become a waitress, I'll have to take pictures" she teased.

Miaka panicked, grabbing a pillow and flinging it at Noriko's head "Don't you dare" she freaked, she would never be able to live that down. Everyone would tease her if they knew she would be wearing something embarrassing. Yui would tease her, Keisuke would blackmail her. Noriko laughed as a bombardment of pillows threw themselves at her head.

Yui listened in while she heard Noriko and Miaka talk, a warmth forming in her heart, knowing Miaka was moving on from her past, no longer deluded by the memories of their past. Leaving behind her obsession with Taka to find someone new. She remembered the first time Noriko told her she was in love with Miaka, how much she loved her and how much she regretted letting her go. She had pushed so hard for Miaka and Noriko to be reunited, so Miaka could finally get her happy ending away from Taka. She couldn't be happier, knowing Noriko told Miaka how she felt and they could finally be together. Making amends for all the happiness she had robbed Miaka of, that Miaka could move on from the heartache and tragedy of Taka. It would take time, but she knew Noriko was better for Miaka, she would take care of her. She smiled brightly, tears of happiness forming in her eyes "Congratulations Miaka".
