Sword of Balmung
Prologue
Guildmaster Leon frowned. A flagless ship sailing in the misty sea? The number of raids made this time of year a very dangerous place to any foolish enough to try and navigate it. Every guild had its own flag… unless – The Paladin drew in his breath sharply.
Pirates.
'Roan, I want all your archers down here.' Leon commanded. A red-haired sniper nodded curtly and retreated.
The requested archers ran briskly to their places, and stood at attention.
'Sir?' The archer commander questioned, from his side. Seeing the distant ship, his brow furrowed. 'Is it..." A grave nod confirmed what was left unsaid.
Roan stepped away, eyes narrowed as he surveyed his archers.
'Shoot everyone, everything." He paused to glance once more at the ship before adding abruptly. "Use your fire arrows. Torch it."
The command had scarely been given when the soft twang of bow strings released sang in the air as flaming arrows flew to their mark. Shouts and screams reached their ears as the ship blazed in the distance. In a matter of seconds, the last few screams faded and the ship sank, still burning.
Guildmaster Leon nodded grimly, satisfied.
In another few moments, the sea was tranquil once more; no fires, no ships, only a charred flag floating forlornly.
The flag bore the emblem of the Merchant Guild.
