Co-Captain
Kenzie's POV
Peter rambled on about how killing Laura hadn't been intentional, how he'd had no control as his body finally started healing for him to be able to move, how it had been a full moon which added to his uncontrollability but I couldn't find it in my heart to believe him since from day one of meeting the Hale's I'd always known Peter could be conniving and devious so it was purely the safety of my daughter that had me agreeing to follow him…that and Derek was following him.
I was still cradling my healing arm as it healed while I sat in the back with Lia who was seemingly in shock while Derek drove with Peter sitting in the passenger seat, I looked up at the rearview mirror to see Derek looking back at me before his eyes went to Lia, I looked over too and saw her breaths coming out short.
"Lia, baby just breath" I panicked moving closer rubbing her leg.
"He…killed Aunty Laura" I frowned regretting saying that in front of her.
"Shh" I pulled her out of her seat when Derek pulled over and cradled her in my lap but she wasn't coming down and I was worried this kind of behavior was going to trigger a non-moon related shift so I cupped both her cheeks and turned her head towards me. "Natalia!" I roared glowing my eyes at her and watched hers light up in return before her breathing finally evened out.
"Mommy" she cried burying her head in my chest and I rocked her looking up at Derek who had been looking back worriedly and I nodded signaling she was okay now before I turned to Peter and glared at the look on his face, annoyance.
"Doesn't she have control?" he spat.
"Back off" I warned glowing my eyes threateningly.
"She hasn't had her first shift" Derek added and I growled towards him, he looked back at me but I didn't say a word as he started the car and pulled back out onto the road driving towards the school since apparently Derek and I weren't enough, Peter wanted Scott on our side and although I knew Peter wouldn't take no for an answer I hoped Scott refused.
When we arrived at the school, Peter hopped out and Derek cast a quick look back and me and Lia before he got out and I sighed looking down at Lia before I hopped out as well putting her down but kept a hold of her hand.
"Let's go" Peter called us but I stopped since Scott didn't know about Lia and I was still adamant to keep it that way.
"We can't" I argued and he stopped short turning to glare at me.
"Were doing this as a pack" I bit back the growl because we were never going to be a pack and he was not my Alpha or Lia's.
"Scott doesn't know about Lia and I'm keeping it that way" I argued again glaring at him to challenge my authority over what my daughter does. "She's not apart of this"
"She's apart of whatever I say she is and you do what I tell you to Mackenzie" I pushed Lia behind me and went to step forward but Derek grabbed my arm and when I looked back at him he shook his head.
"Why are you so blindly following him, you don't actually believe him do you?" I asked him and he sighed before looking over at Peter.
"It was an accident"
"No that's bullshit" I snapped before turning back to Peter to see he'd walked back over and his eyes were glowing red which instinctively made me lower my eyes in fear as he let out a growl but before he even could do anything Derek stepped in front of both me and Lia.
"Get your mate in line Derek" Peter practically spat before he turned back to the school and Derek turned to me.
"Derek-"
"We don't have a choice Kenzie" he cut me off then looked down at Lia and reached his hand out to her but for the first time in her life she didn't immediately go to her father and still clung to my leg and when I looked down she was looking up at me with her big green eyes and I knew I didn't have a choice and couldn't afford to anger Peter since if he could kill Laura who's to say he wouldn't do worse.
"Come on baby" I took her hand and pushed past Derek shoulder checking him in the process, I heard Derek's displeased growl at my behavior but I could care less and we followed behind Peter with Derek soon falling into step on Lia's over side and Lia reached for her fathers hand.
"Can you just trust that I know what I'm doing" Derek whispered and I looked over seeing him looking at me so I sighed and nodded my head since I did trust him but that doesn't mean I agree with whatever he was doing right now.
When Peter walked into the boys locker room I frowned since he couldn't seriously expect a little girl to walk into a boys locker room but Derek pulled on Lia's hand and I sighed walking through the door with him right as the lights shut off and Lia jumped moving closer to me so I picked her up cradling her head as it fell into my shoulder before I looked up hearing someone walking towards us and saw Scott walking around the corner in a towel and my frown grew even more and turned Lia's eyes away.
"Thank god, where the hell have you been?" he asked looking at Derek. "Do you have any idea of what's been going on?" I raised an eye wondering what the hell he was talking about, what has Derek been up to the last week but Derek didn't answer and turned his eyes towards Peter as he stepped out behind Scott.
"I really don't get lacrosse"
"It's was you…" Scott realized.
"I mean when I was in high school we played basketball, now there's a real sport" I rolled my eyes at Peter's antics since seriously couldn't he get to the point already so I could get the hell out of here. "Still I read somewhere that lacrosse comes from Native American tribes and that they played it to resolve conflict" he raised the lacrosse stick over his shoulder. "Do I have that right, well…I have a little conflict of my own to resolve Scott" he put the stick down and looked back at Scott. "But I need your help to do it"
"I'm not helping you kill people" Scott argued and I couldn't help smile a little.
"Well I don't want to kill all of them, just the responsible ones and that doesn't have to include…" he cut himself off seemingly struggling to find the word then looked up at us.
"Allison" Derek replied for him and I frowned turning towards him as did Scott.
"You're on his side?" Scott asked him before his eyes fell to me seemingly for the first time and I saw his eyes widen a little when he saw Lia. "Are you forgetting the part where he killed your sister?"
"It was a mistake" Derek replied and I looked up frowning at him because I still found it hard to believe that he was actually believing Peter.
"What?!" Scott exclaimed.
"It happens" Derek insisted and I frowned turning back to Peter when he called Scott's name getting his attention.
"I think you're getting the wrong impression of us, we really just want to help you reach your full potential"
"By killing my friends" Scott argued again and this time I let myself smile because I admired his strength to argue.
"Sometimes the people closest to you…" Peter said and I saw his eyes turn to me. "…can be the ones holding you back the most" I glared taking that as a personal threat against me and Derek grabbed my hand making me look up to see that he was also glaring at Peter taking it as a threat.
"If they're holding me back from becoming a psychotic nut job like you…I'm okay with that" Scott protested and Peter began to walk closer to him and I inched forward a bit defensively protective of Scott all of a sudden just knowing Peter was about to do something to him to get him to obey but Derek tugged on my hand warning me.
"Maybe…you could try and see things…" Peter drawled out slowly raising his hand as his claws extended. "From my perspective" he quickly finished then jabbed his claws into the back of Scott's neck and Lia screamed out a little making me look down to see she'd looked up so I moved her head to look away again as Scott went down when Peter removed his claws and walked away while Scott gasped for air.
I put Lia down since the nurse in me took over and I moved to Scott moving him onto his back knowing he just needed to ride out whatever mental trip Peter had sent him on having a little knowledge of what Peter had just done, he was sharing his memories with Scott and it wasn't a pleasant experience.
"It's okay Scott" I soothed rubbing his arm before I looked back at Derek. "Get her out of here, stay out of sight and I'll find you since the last thing you need to do is get caught while she's with you"
"Kenz-"
"Just go!" I yelled and he frowned but did as I asked picking up Lia and left with her while I sat with Scott waiting for him to come out of it and after a few silent minutes he jumped gasping. "It's okay, just breathe" I told him as I helped him sit up. "You okay?" I asked and he nodded his head reaching back no doubt to touch the back of his neck but I caught his hand. "I wouldn't do that"
"What was that?" he asked and I frowned not sure how to explain it to him.
"It's complicated" I told him instead. "Can you stand?" I asked since I knew that what Peter just did could have the capability of paralyzing someone so after he nodded I stood up and helped him stand. "Alright well…good luck Scott" I added heading for the door.
"Wait!" he called making me stop and turn back to him. "That little girl…" I frowned knowing what he was about to ask.
"My daughter" I nodded then left heading out of the school following the very distinct scent trail that Derek left me and found myself in the woods heading towards the Hale house making me frown since the police were watching this place, I headed in through the back and went upstairs heading into Derek's old room.
I opened the door eyes falling to the bed where Lia was asleep and I sighed before my eyes turned to the window where Derek was standing staring out into the night, I walked further in shutting the door behind me.
"Scott's okay" I spoke up quietly moving slowly towards him but he didn't say anything or even acknowledge my presence which kind of pissed me off. "How was she?"
"Fell asleep before we got here" he finally replied.
"You shouldn't have come here"
"Police were watching the motel" he replied finally turning around as I sighed and took a seat on the bench at the base of the bed still reeling that all of that actually just happened, wondering how the hell Peter had slipped under our detection.
"How the hell did this happen?" I asked leaning forward with my head falling into my hands. "How did we not see this coming?" I looked up at Derek when he didn't answer. "It was Peter all along and we never even suspected him, I spoke to him earlier and he what…pretended not to hear me"
"I don't know Kenz" Derek sighed moving over and sat beside me. "But I want you to take Lia and go" my head snapped up towards him. "Go back to New York-"
"And leave you here?" I asked and he nodded his head. "No!" I exclaimed before looking back at Lia worried that she'd woken up but she only rolled over and hugged the blanket closer. "I'm not leaving you here alone Derek"
"Kenz it's not safe for Lia, or you"
"I don't care, we stay together Derek and you know why" I glared at him. "I'm not going anywhere because I don't trust Peter"
"Neither do I which is why I need you to take Lia and get her away from all this"
"For how long Derek?" I whisper shouted at him standing up to face him. "Or better yet how do I explain to our daughter where you are, you promised me that I would never be without you, that'd you'd always be there for her and now you just want us to leave you here with your psychotic Uncle"
"I just don't want you's to get hurt" he argued and I frowned.
"The only thing that can truly hurt me is you" I told him and watched his face flick to one of recognition as there was only one other time I'd ever said that to him…after I'd found out he'd cheated on me with Kate.
Flashback – 6 years ago
The tears were still falling unwillingly down my face, I still couldn't believe what he did…after everything we'd been through he cheated on me with that bitch…of all people he slept with it had to be Kate Argent.
I knew things were hard between us lately with college looming over our heads and the fact we were going to be separated but I never thought he'd do this to me…I loved him and he broke my heart, as I continued to think about it more sobs rose up and out of my mouth clinging to my pillow to my chest as I cried but heard a knock on my window making me jump and turn seeing Derek perched on the roof soaked from the rain that had matched my tears that was pouring outside.
"Kenz…please" he begged as I turned around not wanting to even look at him. "Kenzie-"
"Just go away!" I yelled angrily throwing my pillow to the ground. "I don't want to hear anything you have to say"
"Kenz please just let me in" he begged but I ignored him. "Mackenzie…please" his voice broke and it tugged at my heartstrings…the ones that still loved him, hell all of me loved him he was my mate.
"Please just go" I begged back feeling fresh tears start rolling down my face.
"I will but you have to let me explain, I'm begging you" I looked over and saw the desperation on his face so I groaned and went over to the window unlatching it and pulled it up allowing him to slip inside out of the rain.
"You have five minutes but don't expect me to-"
"I know, I'm not even going to try and ask forgiveness because I know I don't deserve it but I am sorry, I'm so sorry and I never wanted to hurt you"
"But you did!" I yelled at him thankful no one else was home.
"I know and I'm going to regret it for the rest of my life but please…I'm sorry and I swear it was just once-"
"And that's supposed to make it okay!"
"No it's not!" he yelled back. "It was a dumbass mistake, I was angry-"
"I'm angry at you Derek but that doesn't mean I'm just going to go out there and sleep with the first available guy and even then you took a step further you slept with Kate Argent of all people knowing who she is, who her family is!"
"I know!" he exclaimed.
"Well good we talked now get the hell out" I walked back towards my bed turning away from him.
"Kenzie-"
"No, that's all you get now get out"
"Kenz I said I was sorry-"
"I don't care I hate you" I admitted glaring at Derek and he looked down towards my chest and I sighed knowing exactly what he was doing, he'd heard my heart stutter.
"No you don't" he argued and I felt new tears start knowing that was true, I couldn't hate him.
"I should…I should hate you"
"I know" he replied stepping forward and grabbed my hand running his thumb over my wrist making me frown down at it with the feelings he was able to arise just with one touch even after everything he's done. "I'm so sorry baby, I swear to death it'll never happen again, I love you so please…please don't do this"
"Derek…the only thing that could ever truly hurt me is you and you succeeded, you broke my heart " I told him looking up.
"I know so maybe saying I'm sorry isn't enough…" he trailed off and slowly let his hand drop from mine making me look up at the loss of contact and I saw a tear roll down his cheek near breaking my heart since I have never seen him cry before. "I wouldn't blame you if you never want to see me again so it's entirely up to you" he added heading towards my window ready to jump out into the rain again…
I was snapped out of the memory when I felt his hands cup my face before his lips were on mine and I fell into the kiss wrapping my arms around his shoulders deepening the kiss before we parted for air.
"I don't want to be apart but I couldn't live with myself if you or Lia got hurt because of me"
"We won't" I insisted pressing my forehead against his so we were eye to eye with each other. "We can't be apart Derek, you know this" he sighed slowly nodding his head.
I couldn't sleep that night so while Derek and Lia both slept I kept watch since I just didn't trust Peter, there was something different about him now that hadn't been there six years ago…I mean he always was a manipulating person but now I just couldn't put my finger on it what his true motive was and how far he'd go to get what he wanted so I wasn't letting my guard down especially where it concerned the lives of what little is left of my family.
When the sun finally started to rise I went out and grabbed food for us and returned to the house seeing Derek awake but we didn't speak and just ate in silence waiting for Lia to wake up even though there was still a heap of stuff we should be talking about…the main thing on what the hell we were going to do now since I knew going back to New York like we'd originally planned after finding Laura's killer was out of the question…I cut my thoughts off as I finished up the last of my waffles then looked up at Derek to see him looking at me and I knew now was the only time we were gonna get to talk so I sighed.
"What now?" I asked him and he sighed.
"Now we do whatever Peter tells us" I frowned not liking that one bit.
"Until when?" I pressed but he looked like he didn't have an answer to give. "So what were just going to bend at the knee to Peter and let him keep murdering people?"
"We don't really have a choice do we" he shrugged and I sighed since he had a point there…although we did have one.
"We could leave" I suggested and he looked up. "We found Laura, found out who killed her…we've done everything we set out to do, we don't owe Peter anything so why can't we just go back to New York"
"We can't do that Kenz"
"Why not?" I asked him.
"Because…because this is home" I frowned.
"Since when, I thought the plan was always to return to New York, what happened to never raising Lia in this town, those were your words not mine"
"Things are different" he shrugged and my frown intensified.
"Why because of Peter"
"Yes" he growled and stood up which generally pissed me off. "He's family"
"And, do you honestly think he cares about you, about me and Lia, were a power play to him Derek" I stood up going on the defense. "I don't trust him, he killed Laura" he refused to look at me. "I refuse to bow down to Peter, Derek" I told him straight up and he looked up at me. "I don't care who he is but he's definitely not my Alpha" I added right before my phone rang and after seeing the hospitals number I answered right as Lia woke up so I left Derek to get her to eat breakfast.
The call was about a shift since one of the other nurses called in sick and although now was not really the time for this but if I was going to be going back to New York then we needed money since unlike Derek I didn't have an inheritance to fall back on and I was too proud to have Derek pay for everything like he always wanted me to.
I walked back inside seeing Derek smiling at whatever his daughter must have said to make him laugh and it was enough to brighten my mood just a little as I walked over and sat on the sofa as well.
"You have to go in a work" Derek said which told me he'd listened in.
"Just for a few hours" I replied frowning looking down at Lia who was eating slowly.
"I'll watch her" I sighed shaking my head.
"You can't, like you said last night the police are watching me, they probably already know Lia spends her time with Ryan and Sarah when I'm at work, they're probably just waiting for the time to use us to find you so Lia can't be with you"
"She's my daughter"
"You're still wanted Derek" he glared at me and I really didn't want to fight with him. "Can we please not fight about this"
"Fine" he snapped then stood up.
"Daddy!" Lia yelled when Derek made a move towards the door.
"Stay with your mom okay" he told her with a soft sad smile and kissed the top of her head before he left and of course I felt horrible.
Lia and I left having to catch a taxi to Sarah's place after I rang to check that she could babysit and she agreed so after dropping Lia off I walked all the way to the hospital since my car was still there and changed into a clean spare set of scrubs out of my locker before getting to work not really feeling in the mood to be here but at least it was something to do.
I'd just finished re-dressing some wounds on patients and was walking back to the nurses station when I smelt a familiar scent and looked up seeing Peter talking with Melissa before he smirked my way and left so I sped up and looked at Melissa seeing her smiling.
"Who was that?" I asked playing dumb.
"A medical rep, he came up and we got talking and I think I just said yes to dinner" my eyes widened.
"Oh…" shit…I can't exactly tell her she couldn't go out with him. "Uh…are you sure I mean, you barely know the guy"
"I don't know, I guess we'll see" I fought a smile on my face but inside I was panicking wondering why Peter would go after Melissa doubting he was actually interested in dating and had a feeling it was another power play to get Scott to agree to be apart of the pack.
By the time my shift was over Melissa had already left and I couldn't help be worried for her definitely feeling like Peter was just using her and wouldn't put it past him to turn her just to spite Scott so after my shift was over I tried calling Derek but his phone was going straight to voicemail.
"God's sake Derek answer your damn phone for once in your life!" I exclaimed leaving a voicemail, I groaned and threw my phone on the passenger seat then put the car in drive and started driving feeling like I had to do something to stop Peter and to do that I had to find Scott.
I drove with the window down desperately hoping a scent was stick out to me but nothing did so I pulled over near the school and grabbed my phone getting out since tracking on foot was easier and decided the school was the best place to get Scott's scent so I headed inside heading towards the locker room since that was the last place I know him being but as I got closer I couldn't help catching another scent and following it.
"What the hell?" I heard someone call out and recognized Jackson's voice.
"I like your taste in music" my eyes furrowed hearing Derek. "I haven't heard this one in a long time" he added before music filled the room.
"I'm not scared of you…come on" Jackson said but even from out here I could hear his heart beating fast indicating that he was scared. "I'm not afraid"
"Yeah you are" Derek replied and I frowned wondering what the hell he was doing. "You know I bet you haven't had a day in your whole life where you haven't been afraid of something" all this sounded like some kind of weird sales pitch. "But you won't have to be anymore…not when your one of us" my eyes widened as I backed away from the door because Derek wouldn't…he couldn't actually be recruiting for Peter.
I heard footsteps getting closer to the door so I turned and ran out the exit that lead to the fields and hid behind a wall watching Derek leaving with Jackson behind him so I moved over to my car getting in and decided to follow him curious on where Derek was taking him not believing this.
I trailed Derek being very careful not to get too close that he'd notice having brought this car and undoubtedly knowing what it looked like but I started to recognize where he was going and pulled off a different road which still lead to the same place…the Hale house.
I pulled over deciding to walk the rest of the way but very quickly was alerted to footsteps running immediately going on edge and hid behind a tree peering around it every few seconds only to suddenly get tackled to the ground but my training easily allowed me to get the upper hand pinning my attacker down before my eyes widened when I saw who it was and let him up.
"Where's Derek?!" he yelled at me and I frowned glaring at him.
"I don't know, I'm looking for him too" I semi lied.
"Do you know what he's doing?" he asked and my frown deepened. "Are you helping them?"
"I'm not Peter's lackey if that's what your implying"
"They're going after Jackson"
"I know and I'll help you" I nodded at him but he seemed to be hesitating trusting me. "I'm going to stop Derek either way because I don't agree with his trust in Peter so trust me Scott, I want to help you" he nodded then took off so I quickly followed him towards the Hale house where I led him another way from the front door to the back where an old vertical garden still hung from the intact porch, this used to be how I snuck into Derek's room at night to cuddle and…well you know.
"No…no please…" we heard Jackson begging as we slipped through an upstairs window. "Please don't okay I'll shut up, I'll never say another word again, I'll leave Scott alone…please you can't do this…please!" the dude was actually crying while he begged which told me Derek hadn't brought him here for Peter to turn him, they were going to kill him which wasn't like Derek at all. "I…I don't deserve it"
"I think you do" Derek replied and my eyes widened wondering what the hell Peter had said to him to get him to do this, I remember him telling me he never wanted to murder again so what the hell happened.
"No!"
"Look around you, wouldn't there be someone here trying to save you…there's no one here and there's a reason no cares that you drive an expensive car, no one cares that you have perfect hair and no one cares that your captain of the lacrosse team!"
"Excuse me" Scott called out walking out to the top of the stairs. "Co-captain" he added before jumping the entire flight of stairs while I stayed hidden curious as to what Derek's move was now and heard the growls.
"Move" Derek told Scott once he'd landed.
"No" Scott protested.
"Fine, I'll kill you too" Derek said and that was it.
"Derek that's enough!" I yelled coming out and his head snapped up to meet me. "What are you doing?" I asked walking down the steps past Jackson and moved around Scott to level my gaze with him. "Do you honestly want to do this?"
"I have to!" he shouted.
"Why because Peter told you to?" I asked him and his look answered me. "You can't do this Derek, you know why you can't do this" I told him but before he had the chance to say anything we heard the whistling sound of an arrow being fired.
"Cover your eyes!" Derek yelled grabbing my shoulder and pulled me down right as the gunshots started but Derek and I crawled behind a wall to safety with him shielding my head as glass shattered but I looked up hearing Scott coughing and saw him holding a gunshot wound on his stomach and coughing around the black blood coming out of his mouth. "Scott go!" Derek told him but he groaned. "Kenzie go, get him out of here"
"No are you crazy!" I yelled at him but he didn't let me have a choice grabbing me when the gunshots slowed and pulled me over to Scott helping the teenager up before he pushed us both towards the back door.
"Run!"
"Derek no!"
"Someone has to distract them"
"They'll kill you!" I screamed at him watching as Scott stumbled out the back door. "I need you Derek!"
"He needs you, Lia needs you…go now!" I shook my head but he pressed a kiss to my lips before pushing me away and went over to the front door grabbing the handle looking back at me one last time. "I love you" he said before he pulled the door open and walked out and although it took everything in me not to follow him I ran out the back door following Scott's trail finding him collapsed on the ground.
"Scott get up" I told him shaking his shoulder a little looking over the wound seeing it smoking a blue smoke which meant wolfsbane bullets. "Scott we can't stay here, you have to get up" he was unconscious. "Get up!" I screamed at him.
"Perhaps I can help" I spun claws out ready but frowned when I saw a dark skinned man and he didn't smell like the usual hunter since you could usually tell by the gun power smell, he smelled like antiseptic…like a hospital.
"Who the hell are you?"
"Someone who can help, can you carry him?" he asked and I frowned but nodded just knowing this guy was telling the truth so I helped him pull Scott up before I took over carrying Scott with my strength following him as he lead me to his car and I placed Scott into the back seat.
"Who are you?" I asked him again.
"My names Allan Deaton"
"How can you help him?" I asked wondering if he might just be a doctor on a late night hike but another instinct told me that wasn't it.
"I'm a vet with a little extra knowledge" he replied and I frowned since he was cryptically vague but then I remembered something Laura had said.
"You're the one Laura talked about" he nodded with a smile.
"We should really get going before it's too late for him" I nodded getting into his car and he drove to his vet clinic where I helped him remove the bullet while obviously avoiding the wolfsbane until he'd treated it with something and just as Deaton dropped the bullet into a metal dish Scott woke up with a gasp before coughing. "I wouldn't get up just yet" Deaton told him as he was still cleaning out the wound.
"Where am I…?" Scott asked looking around.
"Your fine" I told him in my best soothing nurse voice while I rubbed his arm.
"And I've given you something that should speed up the healing process" Deaton added making me look up still wondering just how much this guy knew.
"But you're a vet" Scott argued.
"That's very true and 90% of the time I'm mostly treating cats and dogs" Deaton replied.
"Mostly?" Scott and I both asked him at the same time.
"Mostly" Deaton agreed with a smile again being cryptically vague but I looked down when Scott slipped out of consciousness again and I sighed brushing his hair out of his face unable to stop the sudden memory reminding myself that Derek could very well be dead and it brought tears to my eyes but then I remembered Lia was still at Sarah's.
"Oh my god Lia!" I exclaimed and grabbed my phone off the table seeing I had various missed calls from her and it was justified since it was nearly midnight.
"I can take it from here" Deaton said as if he knew and I nodded before taking off to get my daughter.
A/N: Hope this makes up for the last chapter being so short and I hope you guys still like this story. Let me know what you think by reviewing please and anything you'd like to see in the coming episodes or seasons as I hope I can stay motivated with ideas for Mackenzie and Lia in this universe as this has been an idea playing in my head for so long and I love bringing them to life.
